TIETOJA TÄSTÄ JAKSOSTA
Jason Tatum joined Mixmax in November to run product. By May he was being asked to run the company. What he found underneath a 12-year-old business with genuine product-market fit is the thing most CEOs will not say out loud.
He assumed the demand engine had broken somewhere along the way. It hadn't. It had never been built. Years of virality — a product so good that, in his words, "fish were just jumping in the boat" — had quietly covered for the fact that nobody ever stood up an acquisition motion underneath it. On his first day he asked how the Google Ads were performing. The answer was that there weren't any.
In this conversation with LeanScale co-founder Anthony Enrico, Jason walks through the archaeological dig: a sales team trained only on mid-market and enterprise while high-intent self-serve users couldn't talk to anyone, calendars sitting empty while the org optimized routing rules on top of them, a 12-year-old company that still couldn't describe itself in its customers' language, and the decision to deliberately not chase upmarket. Plus the personal half — nine years at CallRail with no skipped levels, a grandmother who went from the Delta secretary pool to Delta management, and the two words he gave his team in Prague when the list of work looked impossible: bird by bird.
