TIETOJA TÄSTÄ JAKSOSTA
Once the lighting and microphone are set, how do you actually execute a compelling, dynamic performance inside the four corners of a self-tape frame?
In Part 2 of our deep dive into self-tapes, Sean Dube and Patrick Quinlan shift from technical gear to the creative craft and physical blocking of home auditions. We break down the psychology of the slate—why standard information beats over-rehearsed bits, how to handle "tell us about yourself" curveballs with genuine authenticity, and how to execute full-body shots without awkward, lingering phone pans.
From managing human readers on Zoom versus AI line-readers to finding your character's primary and secondary eyelines, we examine the subtle physical choices that make a tape feel cinematic. Plus, we discuss giving yourself props and physical business that live naturally off-camera, playing against scene directions, crafting seamless entrances and buttons, framing differences for comedy versus drama, and knowing when to commit to the power move of sending just one definitive take.
In this episode, we cover:
- The Anatomy of the Slate: Navigating theatrical logistics, commercial personality checks, shoot conflicts, and authentic stories.
- The Full-Body Dilemma: Solving the wide-shot requirement with vertical punch-ins, Picture-in-Picture crops, and hallway setups.
- Reader Dynamics: Working with partners on Zoom versus using AI readers for rote line memorization.
- Eyeline Geography: Keeping focal points tight to the lens (1–2 inches off-barrel) and using internal thought direction.
- Physical Business & Props: Why holding drinks, folding blankets, or working off-camera keyboards grounds your performance.
- Genre Modulations & Single Takes: Framing wider for comedy, going tighter and quieter for drama, and trusting your top take.
