Ep 07: Petal Period Clock Guide

WEBVTT
00:00:04.799 --> 00:00:14.320
Hello and welcome back to Puberty 101, the podcast where we give parents the science, the language, and the confidence to talk with their kids about reproductive health.
00:00:14.480 --> 00:00:18.000
I'm Teresa Woodruff, and I'm so glad you're here for this episode.
00:00:18.079 --> 00:00:24.559
And I have to say it might be my favorite one yet, because today I get to share something that's very close to my heart.
00:00:24.800 --> 00:00:28.879
Something we created in the lab called the ovarian cycle clock.
00:00:29.039 --> 00:00:31.920
Or it's also been called the reproductive cycle clock.
00:00:32.079 --> 00:00:40.960
But the name that seems to stick is the petal period clock, a hands-on visual, make-it-yourself tool for understanding the menstrual cycle.
00:00:41.119 --> 00:00:52.719
And I mean really understanding it, not just the bleeding part, but what's happening inside the ovary and the uterus and the hormone system day by day across an entire cycle.
00:00:53.039 --> 00:00:57.439
This episode is for parents of daughters who are approaching or already in puberty.
00:00:57.679 --> 00:01:04.799
It's for any trusted adult who wants to have a meaningful science-based conversation, but maybe doesn't know quite where to start.
00:01:04.959 --> 00:01:10.000
And it's for you if you've ever felt like you didn't really understand fully your own cycle.
00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:11.599
Because here's the truth.
00:01:11.840 --> 00:01:19.280
Most of us were taught only about bleeding, and that's just one small part of the really extraordinary biological story.
00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:28.319
So today we're going to put that story together with a reproductive clock, some construction paper, and maybe a bit of bedazzling.
00:01:28.719 --> 00:01:31.040
And here I'm going to give you a disclaimer.
00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:33.200
This is not a normal podcast.
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:37.680
It requires you to look online and see the tool that we're talking about.
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:43.599
The way that I look at it, understanding the reproductive system needs multimodal ways of learning.
00:01:43.840 --> 00:01:56.400
This podcast is meant for busy adults who are on a commute or a run before work, and it gives you a starting point for thinking about the assets and the way you have conversations while you're in a place where you can listen.
00:01:56.640 --> 00:01:58.319
So let's dive in.
00:01:59.280 --> 00:02:00.480
Let me ask you something.
00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:07.519
When you were growing up, when someone sat down with you maybe awkwardly and explained your first period, what did they tell you?
00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:11.120
For most of us, the conversation started and ended with bleeding.
00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:17.439
You're going to bleed every month, here's a pad or a tampon, it lasts about five days, try not to be embarrassed.
00:02:17.599 --> 00:02:18.800
And that was about it.
00:02:19.039 --> 00:02:24.240
Well, that's an important conversation to have, but I want to reframe that concept.
00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:41.840
The menstrual cycle is a bleeding event that is linked to a monthly reproductive cycle, a carefully choreographed sequence of hormonal signals, cellular growth, and tissue changes that happens to conclude with bleeding if pregnancy doesn't occur.
00:02:42.159 --> 00:02:45.280
When we explain it that way, everything kind of changes.
00:02:45.520 --> 00:02:48.960
The bleeding becomes understandable, it becomes expected.
00:02:49.120 --> 00:02:53.680
It's part of an overall monthly reproductive cycle.
00:02:56.240 --> 00:03:01.599
And that's exactly what the petal period clock is designed to help you know and communicate.
00:03:01.840 --> 00:03:03.919
So let me tell you about this tool.
00:03:04.159 --> 00:03:14.000
We created it in my lab because we needed a way to explain the menstrual cycle visually, physically, and in a way that invites conversation rather than shutting it down.
00:03:14.240 --> 00:03:25.520
It's also a bit of a fidget that can be used while we talk, and it's a practical way we can use to daily empower women to take back their biology and not just the bleeding.
00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:33.919
We had a Saturday Academy for Girls from the city of Chicago who came to my lab every Saturday for six weeks for many years in a row.
00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:43.280
And we had great folks working in the lab who volunteered their time to teach the students different parts of their reproductive system, very similar to what you've been learning.
00:03:43.439 --> 00:03:45.919
And we figured out something very early on.
00:03:46.159 --> 00:03:53.120
When we lectured about the menstrual cycle, everyone was fascinated, but it was hard to keep all that biology in order.
00:03:53.280 --> 00:04:00.560
And let's face it, getting all of the cycle dynamics right is a tall order if you're 15 or if you're 35.
00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:07.280
In addition, I really wanted to take back the role of the ovary in orchestrating the reproductive cycle.
00:04:07.520 --> 00:04:12.639
So we created a reproductive clock that marks the 28 days of a cycle.
00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:16.560
You can go to the website and download this project so you can do it at home.
00:04:16.800 --> 00:04:19.680
The feedback from girls in her families were powerful.
00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:28.480
I had one young lady tell me years later that she still had her petal clock and remembers the sequence of ovarian events to this day.
00:04:28.720 --> 00:04:30.319
So here's the idea.
00:04:30.639 --> 00:04:38.560
Imagine a clock face, but instead of 12 numbers, it has 28 petals like a flower arranged in a circle.
00:04:38.800 --> 00:04:44.000
Each petal represents one day of the reproductive or menstrual cycle.
00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:51.759
In the center of the clock, there's a movable arm, like a clock hand, that you can point to any petal on any given day.
00:04:51.920 --> 00:05:02.879
And on each petal, there's a simple visual, a picture or a symbol that shows what's happening in the ovary on that given day, what's happening to the growing follicles.
00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:06.480
You can make this together, and that's actually part of the point.
00:05:06.720 --> 00:05:13.680
You can use construction paper to cut out petal shapes, layered in a circle with a pipe cleaner as a clock arm.
00:05:13.920 --> 00:05:22.319
You can color the petals differently to represent different phases of the reproductive cycle, or you can make all the petals in your favorite color.
00:05:22.560 --> 00:05:30.160
You can use different size buttons or beads to represent the growing follicles, and then write the numbers 1 through 28 on each petal.
00:05:30.720 --> 00:05:34.639
The act of making the petal clock is part of learning.
00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:41.279
When a young person constructs their clock with a parent or trusted adult, they're already beginning to internalize the cycle.
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:42.800
They're making it theirs.
00:05:43.040 --> 00:05:47.360
Now let me walk you through the biology of each of the petals.
00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:54.319
So petals one through five is the bleeding phase.
00:05:54.560 --> 00:05:58.319
The cycle begins with day one, which is the first day of bleeding.
00:05:58.480 --> 00:06:02.959
On the petal period clock, the first five petals might be colored red or rose.
00:06:03.120 --> 00:06:09.519
And as you point to petal one with a young person, you might say, This is the day the uterus begins to shed its light.
00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:14.959
It built something in case it was needed, and now it's releasing it so it can start afresh.
00:06:15.199 --> 00:06:20.000
At the same time the uterus is shedding, the ovaries are already getting to work.
00:06:20.160 --> 00:06:30.639
The brain is sending hormone signals, specifically a hormone called FSH or follicle stimulating hormone, that begins to wake up a group of tiny structures in the ovary called follicles.
00:06:30.879 --> 00:06:34.160
Inside each follicle is an immature ocyte.
00:06:34.480 --> 00:06:43.439
Put a set of small buttons next to these petals to show that the ovary is actually doing something quite different and active from the uterus during these first days.
00:06:43.680 --> 00:06:46.000
That's a powerful concept.
00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:57.040
So, petals 6 through 13, this is the growing phase, and this is where it gets really exciting and where I think the reproductive clock or petal period clock earns its name.
00:06:57.279 --> 00:07:03.600
During this phase, follicles are growing and one follicle is being selected as the dominant follicle.
00:07:03.759 --> 00:07:22.399
This is where I love using different size buttons or beads on the clock because the follicles are literally getting bigger day by day, and you can show that, starting with a couple of beads on pedal 1, slightly larger, buttons on pedal 5, and now by the largest button by pedal 13.
00:07:22.560 --> 00:07:25.839
Or you can bedazzle your follicles or you can paint them on.
00:07:26.079 --> 00:07:29.360
As the follicles grow, they produce a hormone called estrogen.
00:07:29.519 --> 00:07:41.360
Estrogen is telling the uterus to start rebuilding the lining, and it's also telling the pituitary that there is a growing dominant follicle with an ocyte that is now mature.
00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:52.319
On the petal period clock, these petals might be a lighter color, maybe a soft yellow or green, and marked with progressively larger circles for each of the follicles.
00:07:52.639 --> 00:07:56.000
On petal 14 is the day of ovulation.
00:07:56.319 --> 00:08:01.120
This is the dramatic center of the cycle and it really deserves its own petal.
00:08:01.360 --> 00:08:22.079
Around day 14, and again it varies from person to person and cycle to cycle, there's a surge of the hormone LH, and this surge is because the dominant follicle has produced sufficient estrogen to tell the higher brain centers that there's a mature and ready egg for release.
00:08:22.399 --> 00:08:27.920
This surge signals that dominant follicle to release that mature egg.
00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:35.200
The follicle opens, the egg is released from inside the ovary to outside, and this is called ovulation.
00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:41.519
The egg then travels into the fallopian tube where sperm are present, fertilization can occur.
00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:51.360
On the petal period clock, you might mark this petal with a star or a birth shape or a bright contrasting color that says something significant is happening here.
00:08:51.600 --> 00:08:56.559
You can attach a small bead that represents the egg being released or draw a little arrow.
00:08:56.799 --> 00:09:03.039
When you're explaining this to a young person, you might say, This is the day the mature egg leaves the ovary.
00:09:03.200 --> 00:09:07.039
It's been growing for two weeks and now it's mature.
00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:16.080
Okay, now petals 15 through 28 are the luteophase.
00:09:16.639 --> 00:09:24.879
After ovulation on day 14, the empty follicle, the shell that released the egg, transforms into something new.
00:09:25.120 --> 00:09:30.480
It becomes a temporary structure called the corpus luteum, which means yellow body in Latin.
00:09:30.639 --> 00:09:34.559
And the corpus luteum starts producing a new hormone, progesterone.
00:09:34.879 --> 00:09:37.200
Progesterone is the hormone of preparation.
00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:40.879
It tells the uterus, get ready, there may be a pregnancy coming.
00:09:41.039 --> 00:09:45.919
The uterine lining continues to thicken and become even more rich and supportive.
00:09:46.159 --> 00:09:54.639
If a fertilized egg arrives and implants in the uterine lining, the corpus luteum keeps producing progesterone to support early pregnancy.
00:09:54.879 --> 00:10:01.120
If no fertilized egg arrives, if pregnancy doesn't occur, the corpus luteum gradually breaks down.
00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:09.120
Progesterone levels fall, and when they fall, the uterus receives the signal no pregnancy this month begins shedding.
00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:12.320
And so then we return to petal one.
00:10:12.879 --> 00:10:17.440
The bleeding begins and the ovarian cycle begins again.
00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:26.240
On the petal period clock, these final petals might be an orange or a gold, representing the luteal phase's preparation and eventual wind down.
00:10:26.639 --> 00:10:34.480
And as you approach petal 28, the color might blend back toward the red of the bleeding phase, visually completing the circle.
00:10:37.679 --> 00:10:41.360
Now the biology is one thing, but the conversation is everything.
00:10:41.600 --> 00:10:48.799
So let me try and give you some practical guidance on how to use the petal period clock with your daughter or the young person in your life.
00:10:49.039 --> 00:10:50.720
First, build it together.
00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:52.960
Don't present it as a finished product.
00:10:53.120 --> 00:11:00.399
Sit down with construction paper, scissors, and some buttons, maybe beads, markers, and a pipe cleaner for the clock hand.
00:11:00.639 --> 00:11:02.080
Let her cut out the petals.
00:11:02.240 --> 00:11:03.360
Let her choose the colors.
00:11:03.519 --> 00:11:06.559
Ask her what color do you think represents the growing phase?
00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:08.240
What about ovulation?
00:11:08.480 --> 00:11:12.159
The act of making it creates buy-in and curiosity.
00:11:12.320 --> 00:11:19.120
It opens conversation naturally because there's something to do with your hands, which makes talking feel less intense.
00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:25.039
Second, start on day one, when her period begins, on the first day of bleeding.
00:11:25.200 --> 00:11:28.000
Set the clock hands together to pedal one.
00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:31.360
Say, today your uterus is shedding its lining.
00:11:31.519 --> 00:11:32.720
That's what the bleeding is.
00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:38.320
And today is also the day your ovaries are beginning to wake up a new batch of follicles.
00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:39.279
That's it.
00:11:39.440 --> 00:11:41.679
Simple, scientific, and calm.
00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:44.799
Third, move through it day by day.
00:11:44.960 --> 00:11:47.440
Move the hands on the clock each day.
00:11:47.600 --> 00:11:49.759
Talk about what's happening on that day.
00:11:49.919 --> 00:11:51.120
We're on day 10.
00:11:51.279 --> 00:11:53.679
The follicle is really growing now.
00:11:53.840 --> 00:11:56.960
You might start to feel more energy around this time.
00:11:57.440 --> 00:12:01.600
Fourth, pair the reproductive clock with a calendar.
00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:10.639
It's important to pair the clock that describes the internal biology with a traditional calendar so kids can count the days between cycles.
00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:20.480
This is practical and necessary to minimize surprises because cycle lengths can change, particularly in the first couple of years after the first period.
00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:24.559
Use a simple wall calendar or a notebook alongside the clock.
00:12:24.799 --> 00:12:31.279
Mark the first day of bleeding each month, and over several cycles, patterns will begin to emerge.
00:12:31.360 --> 00:12:33.120
And that's incredibly empowering.
00:12:33.440 --> 00:12:42.559
It demystifies the cycle, it transforms something that can feel unpredictable and sometimes frightening into something observable and understandable.
00:12:42.879 --> 00:12:46.720
Fifth, talk about how she feels, not just what the clock says.
00:12:46.960 --> 00:12:47.840
This is important.
00:12:48.080 --> 00:12:52.320
The petal period clock isn't just about iology, it's about lived experience.
00:12:52.480 --> 00:12:56.879
During the follicular phase, many people feel a surge of energy and optimism.
00:12:57.200 --> 00:12:59.440
Estrogen rising tends to do that.
00:12:59.600 --> 00:13:04.080
Around ovulation, confidence and social energy often peaks.
00:13:04.240 --> 00:13:10.639
During the luteal phase, especially toward the end, some people feel more inward, more tired, more emotionally sensitive.
00:13:10.799 --> 00:13:13.519
The drop in progesterone has that effect.
00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:17.360
These are normal hormonal influences on mood and energy.
00:13:17.519 --> 00:13:25.440
When young people understand why they feel different at different points in the cycle, they develop self-knowledge that serves them for life.
00:13:29.279 --> 00:13:35.679
I also want to pause here and say something really important about the 28-day cycle as a model.
00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:40.320
It's a useful, beautiful model, but biology is wonderfully variable.
00:13:40.480 --> 00:13:52.240
Some people have cycles of 24 days, some have cycles of 35 days, some cycles are irregular, especially in the first few years after menstruation begins, and this is all completely normal.
00:13:52.480 --> 00:13:56.720
The adolescent reproductive system takes time to find its rhythm.
00:13:57.039 --> 00:14:00.960
Ovulation doesn't always happen on day 14.
00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:06.399
It might happen on day 11 or day 18, depending on the person and the cycle.
00:14:06.639 --> 00:14:11.360
The bleeding phase might last three days for one person and seven days for another.
00:14:11.600 --> 00:14:18.240
The petal period clock is not meant to be prescriptive, to say this is exactly what your body should be doing.
00:14:18.399 --> 00:14:28.799
It's meant to be a framework for understanding, a way to see the big picture of the cycle so that variability makes sense within a context rather than feeling alarming or wrong.
00:14:29.039 --> 00:14:33.039
When you use the clock with your daughter, build in this conversation.
00:14:33.279 --> 00:14:37.039
This is a guide, a map of how the cycle generally works.
00:14:37.200 --> 00:14:40.000
Your cycle might look a little different, and that's okay.
00:14:40.159 --> 00:14:43.759
We track it together so we can understand what's normal for you.
00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:52.320
That reframe from what's normal to what's normal for you is one of the most powerful gifts you can give a young person navigating puberty.
00:14:52.639 --> 00:14:56.080
This goes hand in hand with the possibility of pregnancy.
00:14:56.320 --> 00:15:04.159
Pregnancy is possible during a fertile window, which spans the five days before ovulation and the day of or just after ovulation.
00:15:04.320 --> 00:15:12.720
For a typical 28-day cycle, this window is roughly days 10 to 17, with highest fertility on days 12 to 14.
00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:20.159
Ovulation usually occurs on days 12 to 14 before the next period starts.
00:15:20.480 --> 00:15:27.679
Because cycle length can vary, there's no exact number of days after bleeding begins to know when the fertile window is.
00:15:27.840 --> 00:15:38.159
But knowing what is happening in the ovary, when ovulation occurs, and when a mature egg has been released is all critical information for young women to have an understanding of.
00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:57.120
Knowledge is not scary, ignorance is scary.
00:15:57.279 --> 00:16:11.919
When a young person understands that the shedding of the uterine lining is normal, a healthy biological process, not a malfunction, not something to be embarrassed about, she carries that knowledge into every doctor's visit, every conversation about her health, every moment of her life.
00:16:12.080 --> 00:16:25.840
When she knows that the cycle is not just bleeding, but a 28-day hormonal symphony, that there's a growing follicle, a moment of ovulation, a luteal phase of preparation, she has vocabulary, she has framework, she has agency.
00:16:26.080 --> 00:16:35.519
And when a parent sits down with her, constructs a little paper clock, and says, Let me tell you what's happening inside your body, that young person learns something else too.
00:16:35.759 --> 00:16:39.519
She learns that her body is something to be understood and respected.
00:16:39.679 --> 00:16:41.679
She learns that she can ask questions.
00:16:41.919 --> 00:16:45.759
She learns that the adults in her life are safe to talk about these things.
00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:54.879
This is the real gift of the petal period clock, not just the science, though the science is beautiful, but the conversation it makes possible.
00:16:55.279 --> 00:16:59.120
So here's your homework before the final episode.
00:16:59.360 --> 00:17:10.480
Find an afternoon, a weekend morning, or a quiet evening, whenever it works for you and your daughter, and gather some construction paper, scissors, markers, and some buttons or beads of different sizes.
00:17:10.720 --> 00:17:13.359
Sit down together and build the petal period clock.
00:17:13.440 --> 00:17:22.559
Cut out 28 petals, arrange them in a circle, fasten the clock arm to the center, color the phases together, and as you build, begin to tell the story.
00:17:22.799 --> 00:17:29.200
The story of the follicles that grow, the egg that's released, the uterus that prepares, and the lining that sheds.
00:17:29.440 --> 00:17:32.480
And if you're not sure to where to start, start with this episode.
00:17:32.559 --> 00:17:33.359
Play it together.
00:17:33.519 --> 00:17:36.799
You don't have to be a reproductive scientist to have this conversation.
00:17:36.960 --> 00:17:43.119
You just have to be willing to show up, be curious alongside your kid, and let the clock do some of the work.
00:17:43.359 --> 00:17:46.000
Thank you so much for parenting through the change.
00:17:46.079 --> 00:17:47.680
I'm Teresa Woodruff.
