00:00:00
Speaker 1: Hi everyone, and welcome to Off the Record, the sports podcast. Are breaking news, hard opinion, a little bit of gibber. I met a website from the Australian and I'm joined by my great friend everybody's friend really, Phil Rosfield from the Daily Telegraph.
00:00:13
Speaker 2: Hey, Buzzy, Hello, where I'm under the part? Mate? Why what's wrong with that fog in Sydney this morning? The traffic chaos took me an hour and a half to get here from the Shy. You casually walk around the corner from your darling hers unit tower. Yeah, an hour and a half from the Shy. I went via dramin stop it. So I'm under the put lucky lucky. After three sixty last night, I got home, I jumped on the laptop and I prepared myself.
00:00:44
Speaker 1: Well, I'm ready to get your road rage sort of top mate.
00:00:48
Speaker 2: Today, I had to do everything to control myself in really really tricky positions.
00:00:56
Speaker 1: As you as long as you can control yourself when you're get into a tricky positions, that's all the money.
00:01:00
Speaker 2: Yeah. I can't stand those lane jumpers.
00:01:05
Speaker 1: They gave it in and out.
00:01:06
Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, I can't cop them anyway. I'm here. Weby I'm here.
00:01:10
Speaker 1: And what and how great for us that you are coming up on the show Today. Buzz, who is your Champ of the week.
00:02:10
Speaker 2: My Champ of the week is a late one. Got home last night and flicked on to see what was happening in the cricket. India verse England. The most sensational Test series it's been. It really has been great cricket. So England needed something like thirty six runs with four wickets that they get down to nine wickets and needing about seventeen runs. And that Chris Wakes, who dislocated his shoulder on Day one, walks out.
00:02:39
Speaker 1: To bat under the jumper with his.
00:02:41
Speaker 2: Arm in a sling tucked under his jumper, holding the bat, wearing his gloves or one glove and the one hand. He didn't have to face a ball, but he had to run between wickets a few times. Atkinson was Gus Atkinson was the other batsman.
00:02:58
Speaker 1: Mate.
00:02:58
Speaker 2: He was in so much pain. It's like it's a really sharp twenty two meters that length of a cricket pitch or twenty two yards or whatever it used to be.
00:03:07
Speaker 1: Cooked mate, it was incredible. It was when he came out with it under the under the jumper. Is he going to take the jumper off?
00:03:14
Speaker 2: And all the Indians in the crowd, there were more Indians at the game at the Oval, and they stood and applauded him and made it reminded me of Rick Mcoska the Centenary Test and the broken jaw and the face strapped and made. It was just gripping cricket and anyway, India won in the end they got they got Atkinson out and he didn't have to face a ballwikes. But it will go down in cricket folklore as one of the bravest things we've ever seen. And there's always been a danger in cricket that one, not one days, but t twenties were going to take over the world. Mate, you cannot be Test cricket.
00:04:00
Speaker 1: Long lived Test cricket.
00:04:02
Speaker 2: Mate.
00:04:03
Speaker 1: I'm with you. Look forward to watching it at home.
00:04:07
Speaker 2: Good jam. I think that's my champ of the years. Yeah, you won't beat.
00:04:13
Speaker 1: Me, guy, I want to thank you. How good friends at the Wallabies so one, the third, the third and not deciding.
00:04:23
Speaker 2: Tests that will do me.
00:04:25
Speaker 1: No, they won the game. That's why I'm wrapping them. You've you've missed that hang on? Its texted me here. Jeez, that's a big yarn. I can't say why because it's my cursed actually former yeah, former.
00:04:39
Speaker 2: I know I did be ringing your about what about a letic story you're writing?
00:04:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, no, they did well one twenty two to twelve to avoid a whitewash. It's been celebrated as the greatest dead rubber victory in the history of dead rubbers. But good on them, Good on the Wallabies for getting a win over the lines. I'm not entirely sure how much the line were, how serious they were taking it. They were seen in the lightning delay texting a texting in the dressing room.
00:05:07
Speaker 2: It's interesting because you're not lad mobile phones normally in dressing room. But we're about later.
00:05:12
Speaker 1: We have a credit where it's due to the Wallabies, well known Wallabies. Yay Wallabies. Who's your chump?
00:05:21
Speaker 2: My chump? And I write about this on Sunday, but I want to ram at home again. This TV schedule, the NRL and Channel nine have come up for the last five weeks of the competition. We've got another three weeks of the Cowboys who are out of play. They're playing crap sides. They've got the Eels this weekend, then they've got the Knights, then they've got the West Tigers. No one cares. And how these games finished up in the Marquee time slow, you know we got after that, we got the Titans sixteenth versus the Dolphins eight. Continue your phone off. I know I'm trying, and you know what the last round is? You know around twenty seven is four o'clock game fifteenth place Nights verse fourteenth place eels. Well we knew last night. But well I'll tell you why we do it. Because the NRL insists on doing the draw a year in advance. The NFL has a fast superior system where they do the first sixteen rounds, they stop, they look at the premiership ladder and then they do their remaining round. To do it that way, well, we used to do six weeks at a time. We all blew up that we couldn't plan our years. And you know, if you wanted to go to Brisbane, you had to book your holiday in advance. You wanted to go the Gold Coast towns for Melbourne, New Zealand, a lot of fans like to know in advance. But it's not good enough where we can't put this. This is crap forty. Now that two o'clock game last week the West Tigers and Canterbury is a sword of forty. We shall be seeing in the primetime slots when they do a broadcast still a new one, Webbee. They've got to have a flex more flexible schedule.
00:07:04
Speaker 1: I am picking up what you're putting down. My chump's a bit different.
00:07:08
Speaker 2: I'm joining your company to.
00:07:10
Speaker 1: Know, I'm just loving yours. So I don't know if.
00:07:13
Speaker 2: You better mood than normal.
00:07:16
Speaker 1: You look, don't. I'm in a good I'm in a good space. You don't never see ruin it. Don't ruin it. It's a It's a little window of happiness, so don't shut it on me. I don't know if you're I don't know if you're going to be able to handle this one and a w n B A game that's women's basketball, by the way. In the in the US, they had to stop a game between the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries late in the fourth quarter because someone through a green dildo onto thet This this is appropriate from my podcast Growing Sex Toys Onto the Onto the Court.
00:08:02
Speaker 2: Only where did you find this or did you watch it?
00:08:04
Speaker 1: Our super producer Sam Morgan is the one who pouted out to me because this is the sort of this is the tour.
00:08:09
Speaker 2: Dry Have we got any vision to go with this?
00:08:17
Speaker 1: They've arrested the guy that Yeah, the person.
00:08:20
Speaker 2: What's he been charged?
00:08:22
Speaker 1: Dildo throw dialdo chucking. It's like we're literany. He was bending the arm beyond the forty five degrees.
00:08:31
Speaker 2: I'm not sure you're taking this podcast or that.
00:08:33
Speaker 1: I am taking it. Sorry for having fun everything, sorry for enjoying myself, everything.
00:08:37
Speaker 2: That's happening in the sport on this planet. And you're you've got the so much that is that is a good charge. I've got to give you that anyway.
00:08:50
Speaker 1: So the lesson out there if you're a sports fan, don't throw any sex toys onto the playing arena because it's not funny. But you've got to heard it here first. Now, we had our good friend David Gallup, form a NRL boss, former Football Federation Australia boss and current Venues New South Wales chair on the podcast last week. It was very interesting DG was He opened up about a lot of things that he's never spoken about before, including, as you wrote in your column on Sunday, him being in tears in the office of Steve Folks, the Bulldogs coach, when he had to dock them all those points for the two thousand and two salary cap scandal. Ryan Hoffen from the Storm not happy.
00:09:35
Speaker 2: No, he wasn't happy, and I can tell you everyone at Melbourne's Storm wasn't happy either. I'll tell you why we're beat David.
00:09:43
Speaker 1: He stripped him of premierships.
00:09:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, well not just that. They said he didn't cry when he took our premierships away, and I thought, give me your break, and look, you know what, still my dirty Gallup. Gallup didn't go to Melbourne when he took the points off. Then I can tell you the reason he didn't. John Harding and CEO of news Court, who was also half owner of the Rugby League and owned Storm, he said to Gallop, don't worry, I'll go down. I'll face them, I'll tell them what the penalty is. And he did it, so Gallup had no need to go as well. So they're dirty that he cried for Canterbury but didn't cry for them. Basically, didn't Ryan that.
00:10:22
Speaker 1: He didn't have that they didn't want him down there, and yeah.
00:10:25
Speaker 2: Yes, so yeah, I think he might have said that. So Ryan Hoffman gets on Instagram and this is the Ryan Hoffman who was out of control. Ryan Hoffman called Aaron Woods a coward, but.
00:10:38
Speaker 1: It wasn't personal.
00:10:39
Speaker 2: No of course it wasn't personal, and that was so inappropriate anyway, this time on Instagram he said he read he must have read McCollum online where Beyon Sunday night, because he came and said, oh, that must have been so hard for him. Feel so sorry for poor darling, Like what a shit did?
00:10:59
Speaker 1: Seriously, that's personal.
00:11:01
Speaker 2: Well, and you know what, here's the punchline where it Gallup spoke about storm walking to his office and just coming plan and they threw a red folder down with a number of contracts that were a second contract, the.
00:11:19
Speaker 1: Red Manila folder.
00:11:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, with two contracts for each player, which is hidden at the home of one of their officials. Well guess his contract was inside that Manila folder. Stop it, Ryan Hoffman. So now wonder he's dirty? Like, please, I'm not suggesting here and now that and I need to say this. Maybe Ryan Hoffman didn't know he had two contracts, but someone signed them on his behalf if he didn't know about it. And I just thought, poor fool.
00:11:56
Speaker 1: Talk about bringing a knife to a gunfight. Theyre bringing a knife to a gunfight. Uh. I don't remember Ryan Hoffman being this outspoken as a player.
00:12:08
Speaker 2: Mate. You know, I covered his old man, Jay Hoffman too, and Jay was the most tumid, lovely blake to deal with.
00:12:14
Speaker 1: How much was Hoffman?
00:12:16
Speaker 2: Sorry? When was that very early? That the Canberraider is very good hooker Jay Hoffman? And Ryan was a lovely blake to deal with when he was playing Origin and that. But mate, Jesu said, and the super player, he was a great player, very Look, he wasn't part of the Big three of the Big four when English was there. But every side that wins comps needs players like Ryan Hoffman.
00:12:40
Speaker 1: They do.
00:12:41
Speaker 2: I think it's sad, mate, I'd like to see someone and there are some very responsible people at Storm. And he's not the only one who got out of sorts about Gallop saying he cried for Cannaby who else? I can't say. No, I'm not going to know. I'm not even going to show you when we finished the podcast. But I got a couple of texts and said today not when the column went up, they hadn't listened to the podcast. I'm sure they have now. I said to him, go and listen to the context of it. They were in an office. Steve Folks broke down in tears and then galloped it. I said, go and listen to.
00:13:20
Speaker 1: Him exactly, and Gallup was a young administrator. Yeah, it's only just been in the job. Yeah, you know that's why he cried anywhere crime River as they.
00:13:29
Speaker 2: Say, Ryan Hoffman, two contracts Wow, red Manila folder.
00:13:35
Speaker 1: Yes, you have your contract in a red Minila folder somewhere when you.
00:13:39
Speaker 2: Don't have any contracts, don't you. I'm a self employed contractor.
00:13:44
Speaker 1: I dare say you've got a few contracts out. He got a few contracts out on you.
00:13:50
Speaker 2: I would imagine.
00:13:51
Speaker 1: I could imagine myself. Let's about to sneeze here. It's like, you know, you've got one of those.
00:13:56
Speaker 2: That's good, that's good. Yeah, just be natural, you go.
00:14:02
Speaker 1: You know, ain'ts Bobby? Can you listen? Can you know? I've had people on the street going, hey, Bubba, after you Bubba last week.
00:14:12
Speaker 2: I didn't know what that was about, but.
00:14:15
Speaker 1: I'll tell you what it was. I tell you what it was. It was disturbing, That's what it was.
00:14:18
Speaker 2: It was about fatigue and the fact I'm carrying you on this podcast.
00:14:24
Speaker 1: Are you serious? You know I'm the voice of this podcast.
00:14:27
Speaker 2: You've had one news story or you.
00:14:29
Speaker 1: I've had several, and unlike yours mine A right mine come true?
00:14:33
Speaker 2: What's that New Years?
00:14:37
Speaker 1: It doesn't happen. That's my little qualified All right, let's get into trainer gate, the penwith Panthers trying to Corey Bocking. He's been handled a five match suspension following. What happens when the trainer gets suspended? What do they what do they do? Just sit there and fill the water bottles at dressing room?
00:14:56
Speaker 2: I presume are you there to go to the ground. Of course you can.
00:15:00
Speaker 1: Anyway, He's been handed five matches after his conversion incident with Jaden Campbell. The club Penrith have been fined fifty thousand thoughts.
00:15:16
Speaker 2: A little bit of an ever reaction.
00:15:18
Speaker 1: Thanks Gus.
00:15:19
Speaker 2: They probably look they were close to getting it right. I just wanted to say this. There were people after that game saying it costs the Titans victory. Now, Jaden Campbell, any NRL goalkeeper cops distractions whenever they're lining up from the crowd, from people on the fence. Mate, he had an opportunity to steady himself, take an extra few seconds and a deep breath and land the goal. Are we really blaming the trainer running in his path a few seconds before took for him missing the goal. Oh why where.
00:16:02
Speaker 1: I'm not saying it costs him the game, but it didn't help because he didn't kick the goal.
00:16:09
Speaker 2: You can't say you would to kick.
00:16:11
Speaker 1: That's a bit different, I know, And I've seen.
00:16:13
Speaker 2: Under the field when goalkickers have line that's.
00:16:16
Speaker 1: Not but that's well not for a long time. Well it happened. It's a bit different to a train of running across his line of sight.
00:16:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, but why couldn't he steady himself and then just do it?
00:16:28
Speaker 1: I think he did.
00:16:28
Speaker 2: You know what, there's a really he was just I'm going to repeat what I said on three sixty. There was such an easy solution, an eight point try. Like if you get bashed after you've touched down, you get a conversion, then you get a two point kick in front. In future, if there's trainer interference which is blatantly obvious as the Benrith one, get him off the field for the rest of the game and then say have your conversion, then have another one.
00:16:56
Speaker 1: I'm with him, I'm with you. I do think it was a I thought it was a ship go as we say, and.
00:17:04
Speaker 2: Did think it was intentional. The bloke had a head on him where he didn't look like a crop. You don't know what I mean, He didn't look like a cheat.
00:17:13
Speaker 1: He sort of went, oh, here you go. But come on, but you know what I don't get. So I saw Brent Ree's peace in the Daily Telegraph explaining he was protection. I know, I don't know who he's trying to protect, but it was clearly somebody. But but that said, and he goes, I didn't know the conversion was being He didn't know the conversion was being taken. How could he not? They're standing behind the posts. Well, they're just having a meeting, a subcommittee meeting behind the posts. I thought. I just thought, you know, Penrith need to.
00:17:41
Speaker 2: Be texted me.
00:17:43
Speaker 1: Oh did he good?
00:17:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, he must have been.
00:17:48
Speaker 1: Let's think. Yeah, I don't know unless he's tuned into this studio.
00:17:52
Speaker 2: Well, don't attack colleagues. I'm not attacking him a little bit to attack you.
00:18:00
Speaker 1: There's something up my nose. And we went to sneeze and it's more it's more annoying than you, which is hard to believe. Keep your hanky, haven't used it? Good?
00:18:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, I do think about that. That is a very good point.
00:18:13
Speaker 1: What they were on the base, Just like when I didn't know that was lining, I forgot what were they doing? What a gibber? That is very very funny, I tell you what, though it has taken away it's sort of taken the focus off what we should have been talking about. Nathan Cleary's two point field goal seriously.
00:18:38
Speaker 2: And you know the other thing that passed.
00:18:41
Speaker 1: From the Hawk car like a forty pass mate, It.
00:18:44
Speaker 2: Was twenty odd and it landed his chest and it went like a bullet the ball what passed.
00:18:51
Speaker 1: And then he's had to stop, and then Cleary has had to stop. You run back into the forty on the forty meter line and then get the kick away before the defense gets there. Like everyone who was just after Origin three something, he's just a club footballer. Well, you know what, he's not a bad club football when he's doing that.
00:19:10
Speaker 2: I've put him alongside Joey and I've put him alongside Thurston and wherebe. You know what, it wasn't a one off. He's kicked a few forty meters and you know what, they're always clutch moments. They're always under massive pressure with points on the line, and if Penrith go on to win the make the Grand Final even this year, that kick would have got him into the top four to launch their challenge right yep, mate. It was just unbelievably brilliant under massive.
00:19:39
Speaker 1: Pressure and it ended the Titan season.
00:19:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, Dessi's in a world of pain, isn't he know they've improved for him, but he's in pain.
00:19:49
Speaker 1: What's going to happen there? Buzz with Dez? He'll go, he'll go.
00:19:52
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:19:53
Speaker 1: Will he retire as you exclusively?
00:19:55
Speaker 2: Yeah?
00:19:55
Speaker 1: He will cast on this.
00:19:58
Speaker 2: I can't see him get Is he getting another coaching job the game?
00:20:02
Speaker 1: Don't have to pay him out now?
00:20:04
Speaker 2: Well there's that clause that, Yeah, they don't make the top page so they can't get out. Maybe they'll give him a little sweet No, they'll go without a fight. Yeah, something on the.
00:20:15
Speaker 1: Quiet, you know, Yeah, we don't need a bit of Yeah.
00:20:18
Speaker 2: Jess doesn't. Desi's flying.
00:20:22
Speaker 1: The Northern I haven't.
00:20:23
Speaker 2: Got time on this podcast to reveal his property portfolio. There were that many of them, homes and investments.
00:20:31
Speaker 1: I love these stories stories.
00:20:33
Speaker 2: He'll get the ships now, but anyway, let it run.
00:20:36
Speaker 1: Well. My favorite dead story apart from the one stopping in the in the tunnel to pick up the fifty cent piece as a player was apparently like when he was lasted manly he had a function orbitar with his story. He was at a function and he was about half an hour late because he was doing laps waiting for the free party to kick in. He was.
00:21:00
Speaker 2: I love that story. He was. He always wondered to wear the same pair of shoes to gain that, and I've fall in sixteen years he wore the same shoes.
00:21:11
Speaker 1: And didn't they didn't they did? In the in the players flog it one of them. Yeah, anyway, all right, get to the other Jibbree Rugby League story of the week.
00:21:21
Speaker 3: The what's it called? The lead code? Look, it's the bird in Arabic? You know it's it's what is it? It's it's then what is it?
00:21:35
Speaker 2: I don't know where? I don't know what to describe it as cord or cold or something like that. Well, but will you tell me?
00:21:44
Speaker 1: Have you so? I've done a bit.
00:21:46
Speaker 2: I can't do it. I've tried to do it.
00:21:47
Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't do it. My finger starts shacking. Can I tell you a funny story about my dad I spoke to this morning. He's an old broken down Bricky. Yeah, Richard Webster, big dick, and he's got his tendons going in his middle finger, so it goes down naturally. I call him this morning, I said, listen, be careful just waving people, and he goes. I was wondering why all those Lebanese plumbers hate me so much?
00:22:12
Speaker 2: Oh, that's very fun.
00:22:13
Speaker 1: I reached out to We're having a good live. I reached out to some Lebanese friends of mine who live in La Kember and Belmore, and I said, is this culturally insensitive? And they said no, they said there's nothing to it. N they could they.
00:22:33
Speaker 2: It's like saying up yours.
00:22:35
Speaker 1: Yeah. They weren't offended by it at all.
00:22:38
Speaker 2: You know what I think again, Look, they're going to find these players fifteen hundred dollars each, I'm told the NRL. You know why the AFL signed to find.
00:22:47
Speaker 1: A blake last Jack Jack Innovan?
00:22:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, Hawthorne for giving a bird to the fans.
00:22:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, in the AFL for a while.
00:22:56
Speaker 2: I'm just dirty. It didn't fall in time for the tried July so libration because I weton I would have been a ten thousand dollars.
00:23:04
Speaker 1: What would sports better done? And you know seriously, it was a try to sell them. I know, what are they going to do because they well.
00:23:12
Speaker 2: What happened on August one or two? So we've just missed out. I was going to ring Ham.
00:23:16
Speaker 1: I can't do it. Can you do it? I can't think you try to show me. You do it your finger, So I'm just doing it. But you can do it. Hang on, however, you do it very good?
00:23:29
Speaker 2: Yeah, okay my plug for sports be Yeah, it was good. Come on handy, get them on board.
00:23:36
Speaker 1: Look we'll do it for two million a year.
00:23:38
Speaker 2: We've got over here for you to have me come on board in ten minutes.
00:23:43
Speaker 1: It's bet up. Yeah, I'll take you can pay, you can pay, you can pay me in free. AMMO. We let us say that gamble responsible. God, you're terrible.
00:23:57
Speaker 2: Seriously, you can pay me an amm that will officially do me?
00:24:04
Speaker 1: Okay, um, what are we? What are we fucking talking about? It's all gone tits up to day rugby And I once wrote that Souse that everything I've gone tits up at Souse and I've got an angry letter this one. I worked at the left leaning Cydney Morning Herald and a woman emailed me and said that's disgraceful because it's derogatory towards women. It's misogynists say tits up?
00:24:30
Speaker 2: Is it?
00:24:31
Speaker 1: Yeah?
00:24:31
Speaker 2: It's not right.
00:24:32
Speaker 1: So you know what I email back in thirty years of journalism, this is by far the dumbest email I've ever received.
00:24:39
Speaker 2: Wow.
00:24:39
Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, So cop that. So email me listeners at your peril the British and.
00:24:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, it was just I didn't know you'd remember their last news topic.
00:24:51
Speaker 1: Oh I can't forget the Wallabies. Yeah they're back, can't you tell? Yeah, there's no critical analysis of rugby in this country. Well you cheering?
00:24:59
Speaker 2: Are You couldn't give them a rap and a champ? You had to say it was a dead rubber.
00:25:04
Speaker 1: I did so, But good on them for having to win.
00:25:06
Speaker 2: Yeah, and they mate. They just about won the series if it hadn't been that controversy, which your many and Peyton said was a fifty to fifty call. They win the series if that had gone away, they did.
00:25:19
Speaker 1: It's like you're saying that the Titans, Yeah, the Titans. That's not saying the Titans would have won that game.
00:25:25
Speaker 2: What I'm trying to say is, and I only said that to display.
00:25:30
Speaker 1: To they're back. How far they've come. Yeah, and the.
00:25:35
Speaker 2: World Cup two years away twenty seven.
00:25:37
Speaker 1: Yeah, here on these fine shores we're seeing in a drinking paradise.
00:25:42
Speaker 2: Yes, And if we can go you know, if we can go strong and match the British Lions for a large portion of this series, and if we can find some improvement under new coach Le's kiss, and if they don't piss off and go and play our three sixty which is a threat to all these but it won't be for the World Cup, it won't. But they'll all be playing the World Cup. Obviously. The game is now out of debt. They had about eighty million. They've got something in the bank. After decades of you know, financial struggles and losing the pathways battle the rugby league, they can now reinvest.
00:26:26
Speaker 1: Well, that's what they've got to do. They've got to put that money back into into keeping their talent.
00:26:32
Speaker 2: I just want to say this. I think they're in a far better position than they were a year or two ago, a far far stronger position. They're never going to be rugby league in this country or you know, on the Eastern seaboard, but there's a real comeback opportunity for them.
00:26:52
Speaker 1: Well, can you stop bagging them now now? Well, are you going to stop bagging them?
00:26:56
Speaker 2: Am I bagging them now?
00:26:57
Speaker 1: No? But you've bagged them in the past.
00:26:58
Speaker 2: I've said before Australia loves winners. We do and like the Matildas, no one gave us stuff about women's soccer and they had to play, as David Gallup said last week, in closed stadiums, because no one had go. If this Wallabies team can win and do really well at the World Cup, I think it's they're.
00:27:24
Speaker 1: Back that You're right. This is all I will caution. Is this O will caution? So remember when the Wallabies under Michael Checker made the final of the twenty fifteen World Cup and I remember going, well, they're back. Australian rugby's back. They had that upcoming series against England coach by adye Jones and they got beaten threel and it put the game back a mile. You're right. Australian sports fans, particularly ficker Ones, love a winner. So the Wallabies on Thursday will name their squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa. The defending world champions, the number one team in the world, that's going to be the test. If we go over there and get lapped by the spring box, then it's I think that's going to be that that that hurts. So you're right, they need to be on an upward trajectory. Yeah, and we need because winners are as we say, grinners.
00:28:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, and we need to get to know their players and their personalities. And I think in this toy, even though I just watched it beside the pad, I'm starting to learn and recognize faces. That big skeleton in the front row is it skeleton?
00:28:35
Speaker 1: And game is a bit of ship, Yeah, put a bit of mungole into it.
00:28:40
Speaker 2: Yeah. And you know that the half back with the mole and there's a half back yeah yeah right, and you know.
00:28:52
Speaker 1: Nick White right right.
00:28:56
Speaker 2: Nick White. Well, we've got to recognized faces now, yeah, and this will grow, This will grow. Wheb Well, I'm happy for them, I really are, because Rugby League's just had it all to their own in this form of forty a long period of time they have they have.
00:29:18
Speaker 1: We can all coexist in this country.
00:29:22
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:29:23
Speaker 1: We all love the Wallabies when they're winning.
00:29:26
Speaker 2: Yep.
00:29:26
Speaker 1: Otherwise not interested. Let's do your war story about so regular listeners of this podcast, all three of you will will realize I get quite frustrated when my friend over here starts dumbing his phone when I'm in the middle of saying something I and not only me. You do it when we had you had to do it with Gallup last week.
00:29:53
Speaker 2: Yes, Loca, we're twenty We're twenty four to seven journalists, and I'm not bout to explain.
00:30:00
Speaker 1: Why explain it.
00:30:03
Speaker 2: I'll start off by saying, anyone who doesn't know, I've had quite a sad medical history into In two thousand and one, I had a major heart attack and I'm lucky to be here today. I had it as I was being world into the casualty ward at Subtlent Hospital, luckily, and there was the medical detention there to keep me alive.
00:30:26
Speaker 1: But what were you then? Sorry, how well were you then?
00:30:29
Speaker 2: I was in my early forties.
00:30:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, and you were?
00:30:33
Speaker 2: You were way overweight. I was a packet and a half a day's smoker. I like to drink, and I was very fat and away and yeah.
00:30:43
Speaker 1: Where what were your That's not the war story. I just wanted to I'm sending the scene. I'm sitting the scene. What what job did you have.
00:30:51
Speaker 2: Then I was the executive Sports center of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph. But I've just come off the back of being the Olympic national editor for news Court and I worked sixteen seventeen hour days for three weeks straight producing thirty six page lift outs for all News Court papers, round and made. I was worn out and stressed, and I had a hard tack major one.
00:31:17
Speaker 1: Anyway, can I just quickly say this, I've worked with Buzz in an office and he say, what do you want to get? The grade? Buzzy? He works hard and Buzz gets out the paper and draws the sketches how you wanted to look and like you are? Yeah, someone say a bit of a control freak. But anyway back to you.
00:31:34
Speaker 2: Yeah, micro manager. So a couple of years later I needed to go back and get a procedure done February two thousand and two, and I went into Karna Private Hospital in the Shire the night before to prepare for the procedure. And I had my mobile phone and I was checking contacts, messages, Google, all this sort of stuff, and the nurse walked in said, turn your phone off. You got an important procedure tomorrow. I said, I never turned my phone off. She said, I want you to get a good night's rest, turn your phone off. So under instructions, I turned it off and I put it away in a drawer. And I wake up about seven o'clock the next morning, and you can't help yourself here, you know, check your messages, and there were about four or five miss calls and texts from a guy called Robert Joski, Oh, Robert Shoski, who was then the manager of Steve War. And I knew Steve very well because I was ghosting his column at the time, and he was the Australian captain and probably the best known sporting figure in this country.
00:32:49
Speaker 1: I never knew your ghosted Steve w.
00:32:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah I did. Yeah, pro longed when he retired and that as well. Yeah yeah, tough plate to ghost to get, you know, but we got there. So anyway, I that they were just desperately trying to get hold of me from about eight o'clock, you know, through about ten. So I look at all the messages. Steve Ward had been sacked as this one day cicket captain, which was a massive, massive story. Remember I read a ESPN last night and it said I went back and read the story. Australia's selectors had dropped a bombshell today announcing the acting of national captain Steve Wall from the country's One day international team. The shock announcement was made in Sydney this afternoon, the EVA Wars and then quoting Home saying how difficult it was. So there was an announceing. So I could have broken the story that night. I would have found it in from the hospital bed, you know, And well I would have Phil wore Phil.
00:33:59
Speaker 1: Exclusive.
00:34:00
Speaker 2: Well but mate, it was one of those big cricket stories that went big in Indy, it was big in England, it was big. It was a world story.
00:34:07
Speaker 1: Yeah and.
00:34:10
Speaker 2: Yeah. So I missed out on that one. And when Joski couldn't get hold of me, his camp was very close to Alan Jones as well, so they gave the story to Alan Jones to break on two GB. So I got scooped by Allen and yeah, so there you have it. That was my war story wherebe?
00:34:28
Speaker 1: But you know what you know? Now I get you The procedure went, well, well, that's all I got. I got a clearance, that's all the matters.
00:34:35
Speaker 2: I was still filthy on the nurse.
00:34:37
Speaker 1: Oh there's nothing worse than though. I hate it. I hate sitting on That's why I don't sit on stuff. Why because you're going to get done.
00:34:46
Speaker 2: But you're very You turn your phone off a lot.
00:34:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, well I don't have to. I don't break news like I have.
00:34:51
Speaker 2: I try you. It's a waste of time trying you after eight pm.
00:34:56
Speaker 1: I'm in bed by eight thirty.
00:34:58
Speaker 2: Well you never had after eight.
00:35:01
Speaker 1: I don't want to talk to you.
00:35:02
Speaker 2: What time do you get up?
00:35:03
Speaker 1: Five?
00:35:05
Speaker 2: That's ridiculous.
00:35:06
Speaker 1: I'm an early I'm an early, an early riser.
00:35:09
Speaker 2: What do you do? Train?
00:35:12
Speaker 1: Unfortunately? I train. I train at the start of the day. Unfortunately I eat at the end of it. That's the drama. I got a dog. I got a dog in an apartment. Stevie Nicks, Steven, tell you my Steve so just shortly after?
00:35:26
Speaker 2: How did he go with that injury? What do you do in a c L? Stevie, I'm sorry she.
00:35:33
Speaker 1: Did a c L? Yeah, yeah, she had the operation last week. Cost three after three, after after insurance.
00:35:41
Speaker 2: We'll go and get some medical insurance after.
00:35:46
Speaker 1: Why, brother, and we would have been seven without it.
00:35:49
Speaker 2: Lucky, I over got plenty.
00:35:52
Speaker 1: Luckily I spend plenty my Steve war story. So shortly after that dropped, I had a pre arranged interview for Inside Sport, like a feature of an interview that I would range through Robert Joski. I can't believe he said yes, And I had to do it at the airport. And this is like just days after he'd been dropped. And it's like, and I had I had a broken hand, right hand? What version of that story do you want.
00:36:20
Speaker 2: The podcast?
00:36:21
Speaker 1: I punched a wall instead of you did someone else?
00:36:24
Speaker 2: You serious?
00:36:25
Speaker 3: Yeah?
00:36:25
Speaker 1: And are you fool? Yeah? And you know instead of hitting I hit the stud and it dislocated. The hand dislocated like you can see the see the scar there. That's from the op.
00:36:38
Speaker 2: I'm going to mate with the producers. I'm not sure if this is fit for publication.
00:36:42
Speaker 1: And then so I went to I'm a massive Steve War fan. I'm like a I'm a real fanboy of TAGA and I said, Steve, I'd love to shake your hand, but I can't, my hand's broken, and he goes, let's see how it goes after the interview, and didn't laugh. Do you remember there's all this debate about his baggy green hat and how tatted it was, and I said made in this big in this big uh you know, debate about your your baggy green and whether it's you should be still wearing it? Does it smell? And he goes you take it, pulled out his bag and said take a whiff. I took a smell of it and then I went to put on it.
00:37:21
Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. I was in the members at the cricket ground the long bar down there when he scored that fall on the last ball the Test match and I took my match ticket to him. Members passed and he signed it for.
00:37:34
Speaker 1: Me on the day. Yeah, how good. Yeah, I was in the oro stand. I couldn't. I couldn't get into the members.
00:37:41
Speaker 2: I love that long bar. It's not near the we're on this table near the strange sheds. Yeah.
00:37:49
Speaker 1: I can't can't wait to see you during the ashes there.
00:37:52
Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, that was a That was a fun little.
00:37:56
Speaker 1: That's one of the great war stories.
00:37:58
Speaker 2: You punch and punch trying to punch someone.
00:38:02
Speaker 1: No, I didn't had a big wall and you hit it.
00:38:04
Speaker 2: It's not a stud. You hit that. It's a beam.
00:38:06
Speaker 1: I think it's called No, it's a stud, is it? Yeah?
00:38:10
Speaker 2: It was a beam.
00:38:11
Speaker 1: The son of a son of a BRICKI man and builder. Let me just check that stud.
00:38:16
Speaker 2: It's a beam, you fool.
00:38:17
Speaker 1: I'm telling you no, the stud, that's the frame, look right? Yeah, you know what you know it can also be called a beam.
00:38:27
Speaker 2: So actually, I've got another war story for later in the year. I once built a Seventh Day Adventist church in Newcastle as a builder's labor I did, I did.
00:38:39
Speaker 1: I'll tell you what. That wasn't on my bingo card this week. But you building a Seventh Day adventure? What do you mean I did?
00:38:47
Speaker 2: I was a laborer on my first left school there.
00:38:49
Speaker 1: Well, that doesn't really make me check.
00:38:51
Speaker 2: I went and bought a little seventy and ninety motor bike.
00:38:55
Speaker 1: So you buzzing around it? Yeah, that's why I'm a journey I should.
00:38:58
Speaker 2: Actually, I'll keep that from.
00:39:02
Speaker 1: Your book. Do you want me to write it?
00:39:03
Speaker 2: You can?
00:39:04
Speaker 1: I Do you want me to go write that one? You couldn't afford You couldn't afford me.
00:39:10
Speaker 2: Anyway.
00:39:11
Speaker 1: Now we're getting into lots of gibber all right now listen for Phyllis forecast. I got the chocolates for the fans of Off the record, I said, Wallaby is one to twelve twenty Wow, gon up.
00:39:24
Speaker 2: So this week that was a good tip had me.
00:39:28
Speaker 1: Let's go, buddy, let's go. Come on board. I'm calling this the Dragons v. Sharks. It's the off the Record Cup because I'm a Dragons fan and your.
00:39:40
Speaker 2: Sharks tragic cock jubilee after.
00:39:44
Speaker 1: I'm worried about Flano. Why because he looks very stressed. He looks very he's a bit an L coaching. That's an RL coaching. You look stressed too when you're writing three thousand words on a on a Dragons a fan, that's that's enough to twitch. Yeah, yeah, yeah, So Dragon Sharks, I'm going to back. Obviously the Dragons one to twelve, wonder twelve, three dollars fifty.
00:40:09
Speaker 2: I will say something about your Dragons, I reckon they've nearly ever achieved this year. If they can win another couple of games with that roster, which was a bottom four roster in my view, I think they've done very well.
00:40:21
Speaker 1: Apps well, they did well last week.
00:40:23
Speaker 2: But the Sharks will win anyway.
00:40:27
Speaker 1: Your Sharks are flying under the raidar, Yeah they are.
00:40:29
Speaker 2: You know what my tip is, so the Dolphins to make the top eight. It will be one of the great coaching achievements. Because Christian Wolf, first year coach, lost his first four games, but didn't lose it called a panic. They listened to their injuries. Farm Worth for the year, Daniel side Fete the year, Tom Gilbert the year, Thomas Fleigler hasn't played for two years, and Jack boss start the year.
00:40:58
Speaker 1: I know, I hear.
00:40:59
Speaker 2: They've got to fall in against a plus one seventy one the Roosters and Manly Way, but they're going to have to win two more games. They play the Rusters this weekend. It's a massive game.
00:41:09
Speaker 1: At one point there they had like a third of their their roster.
00:41:13
Speaker 2: Make that far Max playof great play. You know why Wayne's had the most drama the US.
00:41:21
Speaker 1: But they're there.
00:41:25
Speaker 2: You know.
00:41:25
Speaker 1: I love Christian Wolf. I think he's just a really good He just talks like a real man's man. I like him.
00:41:31
Speaker 2: I saw his press conference after four straight losses. He'd come in for Bennett and I thought, this guy, yeah, he don't And he spoke so calm, so strong. He was good.
00:41:44
Speaker 1: Do you know him.
00:41:46
Speaker 2: I've never ever had anything to do with him whatsoever, but I'd like to meet him.
00:41:51
Speaker 1: And we'll get next week's guest.
00:41:54
Speaker 2: Well we should. We've got a big guest coming up to next week's stay. What's that today?
00:42:05
Speaker 1: The year is getting away in it?
00:42:08
Speaker 2: It is, it is, And you're going to go to the pub with him and so am I afterwards.
00:42:15
Speaker 1: I'm preparing the Integrity unit as we speak. Listen, that's all we've got time for and off the record this week.
00:42:22
Speaker 2: I don't feel like I'm over the traffic jam and the Laine hoppers, and I feel better.
00:42:27
Speaker 1: That's good. As long as we can turn your frown upside down, I'm proud. Hey, listen, Thanks everyone for tuning in. Remember you can follow us on socials or YouTube. Off the Record podcast and thanks for joining us, and we will talk to you next week. Buzz
00:42:27
