The Missouri State Penitentiary, often called "The Walls," was one of the most infamous prisons in the United States. Opened in 1836 in Jefferson City, Missouri, it operated for 168 years, making it the oldest prison west of the Mississippi River until it closed in 2004. Known for its harsh conditions and the dangerous criminals it housed, it earned a reputation as one of the most brutal prisons in the country.
The penitentiary held notorious inmates, including James Earl Ray, who later escaped and assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was also the site of several riots, executions, and escape attempts. With 40 executions carried out in its gas chamber, the prison's violent past still haunts its darkened corridors.
Today, the Missouri State Penitentiary is considered one of the most haunted locations in America. Paranormal investigators and visitors report eerie encounters with shadowy figures, unexplained noises, and sudden cold spots. The prison's chilling history and ghostly legends continue to draw those seeking a glimpse into its terrifying past.
