Saint Charles East rides second half scoring surge to win
2
00:00:08.279 --> 00:00:13.919
over Oswego. Written by Matt McGowan, This article is being

4
00:00:18.559 --> 00:00:22.239
Don't tell Jason Striegel a save doesn't matter. With Saint
5
00:00:22.320 --> 00:00:25.399
Charles East a head four zero over Oswego. The Panthers
6
00:00:25.480 --> 00:00:29.079
mustered one last shot as the horn sounded. The score
7
00:00:29.160 --> 00:00:31.839
may not have counted anyway, but a diving Striegel didn't
8
00:00:31.839 --> 00:00:34.280
want to leave his first shutout of the season to chance.
9
00:00:35.439 --> 00:00:38.359
After his right hand knocked the ball away, the senior
10
00:00:38.399 --> 00:00:40.759
popped off the turf and pumped his fists in excitement,
11
00:00:41.079 --> 00:00:43.520
as if he'd made the winning save in a shootout.
12
00:00:43.840 --> 00:00:48.200
But enthusiasm is just Striegel's style. I love it, he said.
13
00:00:48.359 --> 00:00:51.200
Energy is so high, my voice is gone. We played amazing.
14
00:00:52.359 --> 00:00:55.640
Behind Striegel's four saves, the Saints earned a season opening
15
00:00:55.759 --> 00:00:59.320
victory over the Panthers on Monday night at Norris Stadium
16
00:00:59.320 --> 00:01:03.039
in Saint Charles. After a brief lull at the end
17
00:01:03.079 --> 00:01:05.760
of the first half, the Saints tacked on three goals
18
00:01:05.799 --> 00:01:09.599
in the second to pull away. Four different players scored
19
00:01:09.640 --> 00:01:13.640
for Saint Charles East junior Colin Harrington opened the offensive
20
00:01:13.680 --> 00:01:16.280
attack with a right footed rifle into the top half
21
00:01:16.359 --> 00:01:19.200
of the net off a pass from senior defender Alex Sulta.
22
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.519
The taally was Harrington's first career varsity goal. Harrington didn't
23
00:01:24.519 --> 00:01:27.319
play much his freshman season and missed his sophomore year
24
00:01:27.840 --> 00:01:31.760
due to injury. Heading into the contest, he expected not
25
00:01:31.879 --> 00:01:35.640
to get the ball much and prioritize defense, but Harrington
26
00:01:35.680 --> 00:01:39.280
didn't complain about making the most of his opportunity after
27
00:01:39.319 --> 00:01:42.480
scoring a lot in pre season in previous years on varsity,
28
00:01:42.680 --> 00:01:44.719
it doesn't feel as well as it does scoring in
29
00:01:44.799 --> 00:01:49.079
a real game, Harrington said, it matters. The taally came
30
00:01:49.120 --> 00:01:51.519
with four minutes remaining in the first half and broke
31
00:01:51.519 --> 00:01:55.159
a spell of sloppy play. Saint Charles East coach Vincent
32
00:01:55.159 --> 00:01:58.319
Denuzzo said the Saints led up a shot attempt after
33
00:01:58.359 --> 00:02:02.400
their own goalkick and did compete for aerial balls. The
34
00:02:02.439 --> 00:02:06.079
squad flipped the script in the second half. Senior forward
35
00:02:06.159 --> 00:02:09.560
Huxley Kapoor started the turnaround with a left footed goal,
36
00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:14.080
often assist from senior forward Brendan Surlong, fellow senior Sam
37
00:02:14.199 --> 00:02:17.039
Arville and Sirlong each added on a penalty kick in
38
00:02:17.080 --> 00:02:19.439
the second half to seal the contest. For the Saints
39
00:02:20.919 --> 00:02:23.120
to be able to put a forty minute performance in
40
00:02:23.159 --> 00:02:26.439
the second half that I thought was pretty complete, just
41
00:02:26.520 --> 00:02:29.319
says a lot about them being coachable and willing to
42
00:02:29.400 --> 00:02:33.840
listen and apply what we're saying, Denuzzo said. The opening
43
00:02:33.879 --> 00:02:38.319
ten minutes favored the Saints attack. Panther goalkeeper Christian Lopez
44
00:02:38.360 --> 00:02:41.360
deflected a shot then corraled a rebound from the Saints
45
00:02:41.360 --> 00:02:45.439
aiden rich Bell. Oswego saw three corners in the final
46
00:02:45.479 --> 00:02:49.199
twenty minutes of the game, but couldn't convert. The shutout
47
00:02:49.280 --> 00:02:53.439
marked Striegel's tenth career shutout on varsity after registering a
48
00:02:53.439 --> 00:02:56.240
one point two to two goals against average last season.
49
00:02:57.319 --> 00:03:00.000
He's stepping into a leadership role, Denuzzo said, of six,
50
00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:03.919
he's our alternate captain, but the way he commanded our
51
00:03:03.960 --> 00:03:08.360
back line today was exceptional. The Saints were regional finalists
52
00:03:08.400 --> 00:03:12.159
last year and returned ten starters, which includes four all
53
00:03:12.199 --> 00:03:17.280
conference players. Oswego coach gaspar Arias recognized such talent but
54
00:03:17.319 --> 00:03:20.159
still saw some progress for his squad as it looks
55
00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:22.319
to improve on a fifteen to eight record last season.
56
00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:25.400
Our team is building up. We have a lot of
57
00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:29.520
younger talent Arias said, but I think they now experienced
58
00:03:29.520 --> 00:03:31.680
the level of varsity. I think we're going to be
59
00:03:31.719 --> 00:03:35.240
able to rebuild this team and do something good moving forward.
