In Episode 75 of the K-Town Connection, lifelong Kannapolis photographer and artist Chad Mitchell opens his archive of more than 25,000 photographs that document the demolition of Cannon Mills — the place that built this town.
As the massive mill complex disappeared, Chad decided someone had to record what was being lost. What began as a personal mission became one of the most important visual records of Kannapolis history ever created. He takes us inside the abandoned buildings, shares how he gained access (Hardee’s biscuits helped), and reveals the stories behind some of his most powerful images — including the fall of the iconic water tower, a once-in-a-lifetime balloon ride over the complex, and the unforgettable photograph of his late father standing in the partially demolished mill, looking out at the rubble of the place where he had worked for decades.
Chad also looks back at an incredible creative career that includes photographing Appalachian State football during its national championship years, serving as team photographer for Kannapolis professional baseball, working with NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program, and creating artwork connected to Dale Earnhardt.
His guiding philosophy has always been simple:
Tell as much of the story as possible in one shutter click.
Today, as a new generation grows up in a Kannapolis that looks nothing like the mill town their parents and grandparents knew, these photographs have become even more valuable. They don’t just preserve buildings — they preserve the people, the work, the memories, and the identity of a community that was forever changed.
This episode is exactly what the K-Town Connection is about: preserving Kannapolis history by telling the stories of the people who lived it.

00:00:46.239 --> 00:00:47.830

00:00:57.120 --> 00:00:59.830
>> Um I don't remember who it is because I
00:00:59.840 --> 00:01:01.670
knew I wasn't going to be there.
00:01:01.680 --> 00:01:05.030
>> Do uh not next week here. Don't we have
00:01:05.040 --> 00:01:07.190
too much Sylvia next week?
00:01:07.200 --> 00:01:10.550
>> And then uh this Saturday night.
00:01:10.560 --> 00:01:12.310
>> Yeah, there's a lot going on downtown.
00:01:12.320 --> 00:01:12.950
>> Sweet. Sweet.
00:01:12.960 --> 00:01:13.510
>> This weekend.
00:01:13.520 --> 00:01:14.950
>> I called Ryan the other day and he
00:01:14.960 --> 00:01:16.630
picked up the phone and put it up to his
00:01:16.640 --> 00:01:18.870
radio. 94.9
00:01:18.880 --> 00:01:21.190
the surf. [laughter] Sounds of the
00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:22.550
beach.
00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:24.390
>> Has he graduated to sending you videos
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:25.590
of it yet, though?
00:01:25.600 --> 00:01:27.590
>> Oh, yeah. Time to turn.
00:01:27.600 --> 00:01:28.789
>> It's time to turn before [laughter] you
00:01:28.799 --> 00:01:29.429
burn.
00:01:29.439 --> 00:01:31.670
>> I get it all. I get it all. Uh Ryan,
00:01:31.680 --> 00:01:32.550
you've been doing all right.
00:01:32.560 --> 00:01:33.670
>> Yeah. How about you?
00:01:33.680 --> 00:01:35.429
>> Good. Good. David, Steel, you back
00:01:35.439 --> 00:01:36.390
there? Can you hear us?
00:01:36.400 --> 00:01:37.590
>> I'm here.
00:01:37.600 --> 00:01:39.590
>> Hey, I saw we got the memo. We wore the
00:01:39.600 --> 00:01:40.230
same shirt.
00:01:40.240 --> 00:01:41.270
>> Look at that. I mean, we even got I
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:42.469
mean, you can't see my shorts. We even
00:01:42.479 --> 00:01:44.870
we even matched up with some red shorts
00:01:44.880 --> 00:01:45.350
this afternoon.
00:01:45.360 --> 00:01:47.910
>> Man, that's careful now. I wore my Bobby
00:01:47.920 --> 00:01:49.270
Dale Nhard shirt.
00:01:49.280 --> 00:01:50.230
>> Bobby Dale.
00:01:50.240 --> 00:01:51.109
>> Got the mail.
00:01:51.119 --> 00:01:54.870
>> I hear you. Well, Ron, um, exit exit.
00:01:54.880 --> 00:01:56.789
>> Back on it. I'm back on it.
00:01:56.799 --> 00:01:57.910
>> I 74.
00:01:57.920 --> 00:01:58.469
>> I know. Hey,
00:01:58.479 --> 00:02:00.709
>> you take a month away and old old habits
00:02:00.719 --> 00:02:01.109
come back.
00:02:01.119 --> 00:02:02.149
>> I know. Um,
00:02:02.159 --> 00:02:04.230
>> David, you got the sports center back
00:02:04.240 --> 00:02:05.910
there open. At least we know that's
00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:06.230
open.
00:02:06.240 --> 00:02:07.590
>> Yeah. So, whatever exit that's open,
00:02:07.600 --> 00:02:09.029
>> we actually got a I got a few things to
00:02:09.039 --> 00:02:09.910
talk about tonight. Well,
00:02:09.920 --> 00:02:10.389
>> let's do it.
00:02:10.399 --> 00:02:12.790
>> Um, got to go to the Cannonballers game
00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:14.869
this past Sunday against the Salem
00:02:14.879 --> 00:02:18.869
Ridge. Uh my two nieces were uh in town
00:02:18.879 --> 00:02:22.309
and we we took them to the ball game. Uh
00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:24.710
team was down 3 nothing through most of
00:02:24.720 --> 00:02:27.030
the game and then ended up coming back
00:02:27.040 --> 00:02:29.270
um had one guy hit a three-run homer in
00:02:29.280 --> 00:02:30.550
the eighth and they ended up coming back
00:02:30.560 --> 00:02:32.470
winning I want to say it was eight to
00:02:32.480 --> 00:02:35.430
eight to three. So uh had a nice game
00:02:35.440 --> 00:02:38.710
there. Um summer shootout down at the
00:02:38.720 --> 00:02:40.550
racetrack has finished up. This past
00:02:40.560 --> 00:02:44.470
Tuesday was the last race. Um, and a
00:02:44.480 --> 00:02:46.070
young gentleman by the name of Tyler
00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:51.030
Young uh driving baby beluga, a uh there
00:02:51.040 --> 00:02:53.190
big blue bus there in the bus slubber
00:02:53.200 --> 00:02:56.550
knocker uh took the trophy home for
00:02:56.560 --> 00:02:58.150
that. Um, [clears throat] and then for
00:02:58.160 --> 00:03:00.869
those of you that are have been missing
00:03:00.879 --> 00:03:04.309
some uh pro football, uh, NFL kind of
00:03:04.319 --> 00:03:05.990
kicks back tonight. We we've got our
00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:07.509
Carolina Panthers playing the Arizona
00:03:07.519 --> 00:03:08.949
Cardinals in Canton tonight in the Hall
00:03:08.959 --> 00:03:13.110
of Fame game uh, at 8 PM. Cool. So, lot
00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:14.309
lots of sports going on.
00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:15.670
>> High school football kicks off this
00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:16.869
week, too. It does.
00:03:16.879 --> 00:03:18.470
>> They got a scrimmage starting up
00:03:18.480 --> 00:03:20.710
tomorrow. I think AL Brown goes up to
00:03:20.720 --> 00:03:23.509
Carson. Uh, takes on those
00:03:23.519 --> 00:03:25.990
>> other guys in China Grove. So, uh, you
00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:27.270
know, should be it should be a good year
00:03:27.280 --> 00:03:29.509
for all the teams around here. Uh, but
00:03:29.519 --> 00:03:31.030
cool deal. Well, Ryan, you ready to get
00:03:31.040 --> 00:03:31.670
this one going?
00:03:31.680 --> 00:03:32.390
>> I guess so.
00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:32.949
>> All right,
00:03:32.959 --> 00:03:54.482
>> let's do it.
00:03:54.492 --> 00:03:54.949
>> [music]
00:03:54.959 --> 00:03:57.990
>> Some worthless farmland by the county
00:03:58.000 --> 00:03:59.589
line
00:03:59.599 --> 00:04:02.470
turned into hope. [music] A dream
00:04:02.480 --> 00:04:04.229
divine.
00:04:04.239 --> 00:04:08.869
A mill rose up. A town [music] was born.
00:04:08.879 --> 00:04:13.477
The whistle blew that became our norm.
00:04:13.487 --> 00:04:14.470
[music]
00:04:14.480 --> 00:04:18.069
They came from miles with callous hands.
00:04:18.079 --> 00:04:22.710
Towns were made on these southern lands.
00:04:22.720 --> 00:04:27.430
A mill town [music] strong a legacy.
00:04:27.440 --> 00:04:32.390
Roots run [music] deep as the old tree.
00:04:32.400 --> 00:04:35.830
They said we were banished. Our fate at
00:04:35.840 --> 00:04:39.670
stake, [music] but we stood as one for
00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:43.590
pity sake. Held [music] our ground when
00:04:43.600 --> 00:04:46.228
the whole world shook. Look at us
00:04:46.238 --> 00:04:47.990
[music] now.
00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:51.189
Just take a look. From the hardworking
00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:55.270
mill guys [music] in the we room to the
00:04:55.280 --> 00:04:59.983
man in black and I wonder too. This town
00:04:59.993 --> 00:05:04.150
[music] is strong down to its core.
00:05:04.160 --> 00:05:08.870
our future dreams for the mill before
00:05:08.880 --> 00:05:12.310
can [music] ever live.
00:05:12.320 --> 00:05:18.469
You rise ever more [music]
00:05:18.479 --> 00:05:19.270
town strong.
00:05:19.280 --> 00:05:21.189
>> We stand as one from the middle to the
00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:21.510
land.
00:05:21.520 --> 00:05:22.790
>> Look [music] how far we come.
00:05:22.800 --> 00:05:25.909
>> K Town in every direction. That's the
00:05:25.919 --> 00:05:32.310
heart of the K Town Connection.
00:05:32.320 --> 00:05:33.590
>> All right, guys. Welcome back here to
00:05:33.600 --> 00:05:35.510
another crazy episode of the Ktown
00:05:35.520 --> 00:05:37.029
Connection. As always, you got your
00:05:37.039 --> 00:05:38.710
Rough Talk cousins here, Chris Hughes,
00:05:38.720 --> 00:05:41.189
Rough Talk Ryan, Dave Vault, Chuck, Dr.
00:05:41.199 --> 00:05:43.110
Dave Irvin, and of course, back there in
00:05:43.120 --> 00:05:45.990
the sports cave, David Steel. Ryan, as
00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:47.590
always, I'm going to give you the floor.
00:05:47.600 --> 00:05:49.270
We got a really cool guest. I'm anxious
00:05:49.280 --> 00:05:50.950
to dive in and and hear some really cool
00:05:50.960 --> 00:05:52.629
story. So, let's get her done.
00:05:52.639 --> 00:05:55.670
>> All right. So tonight we have someone
00:05:55.680 --> 00:05:58.629
who's I would call a local legend
00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:01.670
because this guy has done literally
00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:03.350
everything around town through the
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:06.870
years. Um had a lot of lot of positive
00:06:06.880 --> 00:06:08.870
things that he's documented in the
00:06:08.880 --> 00:06:10.870
community's history. A lot of lot of sad
00:06:10.880 --> 00:06:13.029
events he's also documented.
00:06:13.039 --> 00:06:18.070
>> Um and just a great guy, great family.
00:06:18.080 --> 00:06:20.870
>> Known my whole life I guess pretty much.
00:06:20.880 --> 00:06:23.990
Yes. And uh but Chad Mitchell, he was
00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:25.590
just featured with the Canapapolis
00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:28.870
History Associates this week as their
00:06:28.880 --> 00:06:31.189
program. And Chad and I talked about
00:06:31.199 --> 00:06:35.430
doing this podcast long time ago. He was
00:06:35.440 --> 00:06:36.469
on our early list.
00:06:36.479 --> 00:06:38.469
>> Yeah. And uh so we finally connected.
00:06:38.479 --> 00:06:40.469
He's he's been a star now two times in
00:06:40.479 --> 00:06:43.029
the same week. So [laughter] he he's
00:06:43.039 --> 00:06:44.550
going to start signing autographs for
00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:46.870
long. So Chad, welcome to the show.
00:06:46.880 --> 00:06:48.469
>> Thank you fellas. I appreciate it. Glad
00:06:48.479 --> 00:06:49.029
to be here.
00:06:49.039 --> 00:06:51.029
>> Good to have you have you. So I guess
00:06:51.039 --> 00:06:52.870
just tell us a little bit about you and
00:06:52.880 --> 00:06:55.670
growing up here and uh of course you
00:06:55.680 --> 00:06:57.590
know your parents and just kind of your
00:06:57.600 --> 00:06:59.270
upbringing in Canapapolis and then we'll
00:06:59.280 --> 00:07:02.150
kind of move into what brings you here
00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:02.790
today.
00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:05.909
>> Okay. Uh again my name is Chad Mitchell.
00:07:05.919 --> 00:07:10.469
Uh I'm an 87 graduate of South Rowan.
00:07:10.479 --> 00:07:12.309
>> There you go. [laughter]
00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:13.189
I got it.
00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:16.309
>> Um, but no, I I went on to Appalachin
00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:18.309
State. Uh, studied graphic design,
00:07:18.319 --> 00:07:21.990
commercial art, uh, degreed in '92.
00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:23.589
Um,
00:07:23.599 --> 00:07:26.550
gosh, I could I could stay right there,
00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:28.870
but um, I'm a photographer for App State
00:07:28.880 --> 00:07:31.430
football. Um, jumped in at the right
00:07:31.440 --> 00:07:34.390
time in ' 05, uh, when we started
00:07:34.400 --> 00:07:37.990
winning, uh, Natties and Chatty. Um, so
00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:40.550
we won national championships,
00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:44.070
uh, and 05, 06,07. Uh, there's a number
00:07:44.080 --> 00:07:45.830
of
00:07:45.840 --> 00:07:48.469
division championships and stuff or um,
00:07:48.479 --> 00:07:51.830
league championships. But um no, like
00:07:51.840 --> 00:07:55.430
Ryan said, I I feel like having sitting
00:07:55.440 --> 00:07:58.390
the cat bird seat here, um thinking back
00:07:58.400 --> 00:08:00.230
of a lot lot of stuff that I've been
00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:04.869
able to do. U a lot of this stuff that
00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:07.430
really almost feels like a reward.
00:08:07.440 --> 00:08:11.430
>> Um I chose to do it. Um um one of the
00:08:11.440 --> 00:08:14.309
biggest Oh gosh, where can I where can I
00:08:14.319 --> 00:08:17.270
start? I had um three years of NASCAR
00:08:17.280 --> 00:08:19.110
photography for the drive for diversity
00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:21.510
program first three years. So kind of
00:08:21.520 --> 00:08:23.670
was cool working with uh Wendell Scott
00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:24.710
Jr.
00:08:24.720 --> 00:08:28.230
>> That was very rewarding. Um I worked for
00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:29.909
the minor league team when they came in
00:08:29.919 --> 00:08:34.469
from Spartanberg in uh 95 until the time
00:08:34.479 --> 00:08:38.469
my twins were born in ' 07. I shot the
00:08:38.479 --> 00:08:40.230
the team photo in center field and
00:08:40.240 --> 00:08:42.949
walked off the field. So, I feel like I
00:08:42.959 --> 00:08:46.150
graduated myself then. Um, but the team
00:08:46.160 --> 00:08:48.790
has since had me back in 18 for
00:08:48.800 --> 00:08:52.710
transition images, unbeknownst to that
00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:55.430
little thing we had in 2020 with the
00:08:55.440 --> 00:08:58.949
masks. Um, but then Matt Millward, he
00:08:58.959 --> 00:09:01.910
gets a big kudos uh uh for calling me
00:09:01.920 --> 00:09:05.269
back out to capture everything that
00:09:05.279 --> 00:09:07.590
doesn't happen on the field. And that's
00:09:07.600 --> 00:09:10.630
that's been a lot of fun. But um gosh,
00:09:10.640 --> 00:09:11.430
what else?
00:09:11.440 --> 00:09:13.030
>> Well, well, we could talk we can unpack
00:09:13.040 --> 00:09:14.470
a lot of that stuff, but before we get
00:09:14.480 --> 00:09:16.070
into a lot of that stuff. I I I like to
00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:17.750
ask a lot of the people the same thing.
00:09:17.760 --> 00:09:19.110
You know, we all have our own unique
00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:21.269
Ktown experiences of how we grew up.
00:09:21.279 --> 00:09:22.710
What neighborhood did you grow up and
00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:24.470
and what was your early childhood here
00:09:24.480 --> 00:09:26.389
in Canafas like and how did it really
00:09:26.399 --> 00:09:28.310
kind of shape you and send you on this
00:09:28.320 --> 00:09:29.670
trajectory of cool things we're going to
00:09:29.680 --> 00:09:30.230
talk about?
00:09:30.240 --> 00:09:33.190
>> Okay. Um well, I grew up out west Sea
00:09:33.200 --> 00:09:35.509
Street uh towards Enigville down Rainbow
00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:39.750
Drive. Um grew up there. uh mom, dad's
00:09:39.760 --> 00:09:42.070
house that they're still or mom's still
00:09:42.080 --> 00:09:47.110
there. U lost dad about 2 years ago. Um
00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:49.829
I got into let's see I remember coming
00:09:49.839 --> 00:09:54.710
into town um and grabbing going to the
00:09:54.720 --> 00:09:57.910
old um dairy bar. Was that Rowan Dairy
00:09:57.920 --> 00:10:00.389
Bar right where right beside where the
00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:03.030
>> center? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my gosh.
00:10:03.040 --> 00:10:04.870
The banana splits when I could put those
00:10:04.880 --> 00:10:05.509
away.
00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:07.110
>> Milkshakes too. Um,
00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:09.430
>> my mom talks about the pound cakes.
00:10:09.440 --> 00:10:11.750
>> Oh my gosh.
00:10:11.760 --> 00:10:12.550
>> Yeah,
00:10:12.560 --> 00:10:13.910
>> I just found out today that that's where
00:10:13.920 --> 00:10:15.269
Aunt Kathy met Jerry.
00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:17.030
>> I saw that in the newspaper. Wow. I did
00:10:17.040 --> 00:10:18.069
not know that. [laughter]
00:10:18.079 --> 00:10:18.870
>> Oh, there we go.
00:10:18.880 --> 00:10:19.829
>> David's aunt passed
00:10:19.839 --> 00:10:20.790
>> bringing people together for
00:10:20.800 --> 00:10:21.430
>> yesterday.
00:10:21.440 --> 00:10:24.230
>> Five minutes. No. Um [laughter]
00:10:24.240 --> 00:10:27.990
but no uh coming into town I remember uh
00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:30.550
my well my grandparents my my dad's
00:10:30.560 --> 00:10:32.790
parents uh Charlie and Mary Ella
00:10:32.800 --> 00:10:35.110
Mitchell live over lived over on Laura
00:10:35.120 --> 00:10:38.550
Avenue and we we all went to church
00:10:38.560 --> 00:10:40.230
together at North Canapapolis United
00:10:40.240 --> 00:10:42.870
Methodist the Rock Church. Uh so I grew
00:10:42.880 --> 00:10:45.590
up there. Uh
00:10:45.600 --> 00:10:48.710
just I remember the church dinners. Holy
00:10:48.720 --> 00:10:51.269
cow. Oh my god. I miss those. um the
00:10:51.279 --> 00:10:54.150
church dinners, coming to Canon Village
00:10:54.160 --> 00:10:57.990
um with my grandmother and buying uh
00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:00.790
going to plant 4 when they'd have the
00:11:00.800 --> 00:11:02.069
big the sales.
00:11:02.079 --> 00:11:02.470
>> Mhm.
00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:04.470
>> The discount sales. Oh, yeah. What
00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:07.110
Mitchell I think is Greek for
00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:08.870
>> Give me that discount. [laughter]
00:11:08.880 --> 00:11:10.550
I think it's Greek for I think I think
00:11:10.560 --> 00:11:12.630
I'm somewhere close. But um
00:11:12.640 --> 00:11:14.949
>> but no, just Midway Ballfield. I
00:11:14.959 --> 00:11:16.630
remember watching King and his Court. I
00:11:16.640 --> 00:11:18.310
just saw something. I think it was Yaw's
00:11:18.320 --> 00:11:20.550
Paige maybe. But um I remember sitting
00:11:20.560 --> 00:11:22.949
in the stands watching that striking a
00:11:22.959 --> 00:11:25.350
guy out from second base. What?
00:11:25.360 --> 00:11:26.870
>> And I'm a baseball guy so
00:11:26.880 --> 00:11:27.350
>> yeah.
00:11:27.360 --> 00:11:30.870
>> Um but no just everything the the water
00:11:30.880 --> 00:11:33.590
tank I'm segueing I'm sure. But um the
00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:35.750
water tank always seemed to
00:11:35.760 --> 00:11:38.069
>> when I'm in the back of the car and I'm
00:11:38.079 --> 00:11:40.630
see this much above through the window.
00:11:40.640 --> 00:11:42.630
That water tank always seemed to follow
00:11:42.640 --> 00:11:45.430
me. you know, wherever I went, I always
00:11:45.440 --> 00:11:47.750
thought that. And I always thought it
00:11:47.760 --> 00:11:51.509
was neat cuz it was checkerboard and,
00:11:51.519 --> 00:11:53.829
you know, uh, driving down Maine and
00:11:53.839 --> 00:11:56.389
seeing, you know, the meal and packed
00:11:56.399 --> 00:12:00.310
in. where I think u brought you to the
00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:01.269
highlight
00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:04.870
>> of everything is is you documenting and
00:12:04.880 --> 00:12:07.910
I know we'll get further into it but uh
00:12:07.920 --> 00:12:10.389
that's where yeah that's where I uh
00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:13.350
began uh taking notice of your
00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:15.750
photography work and all the things that
00:12:15.760 --> 00:12:18.470
you did is is with the demise of the
00:12:18.480 --> 00:12:19.190
meals
00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:22.389
>> right yeah and and that played you know
00:12:22.399 --> 00:12:25.590
a huge role in you know there wasn't
00:12:25.600 --> 00:12:28.870
many people allowed in to uh to take
00:12:28.880 --> 00:12:30.230
pictures. I think you were probably the
00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:34.069
the main one to document the demolition
00:12:34.079 --> 00:12:36.470
and what was left behind and and some of
00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:38.790
the pictures you've posted,
00:12:38.800 --> 00:12:41.269
you know, it they're they're eerie in a
00:12:41.279 --> 00:12:42.470
lot of ways.
00:12:42.480 --> 00:12:46.550
>> And but that represents a transition of
00:12:46.560 --> 00:12:48.710
American
00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:52.310
economic being, I guess, word of it.
00:12:52.320 --> 00:12:52.710
Yeah,
00:12:52.720 --> 00:12:55.269
>> that not just here, but that p that same
00:12:55.279 --> 00:12:57.590
picture could be shown in many many
00:12:57.600 --> 00:12:59.430
places throughout our nation
00:12:59.440 --> 00:13:00.870
>> because of what's happened.
00:13:00.880 --> 00:13:01.269
>> Yeah.
00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:02.389
>> Our economy.
00:13:02.399 --> 00:13:04.470
>> But how I mean, I guess since we're kind
00:13:04.480 --> 00:13:06.310
of leaping into that,
00:13:06.320 --> 00:13:08.949
>> um, you know, you go from from taking
00:13:08.959 --> 00:13:11.590
pictures of cool baseball games where
00:13:11.600 --> 00:13:12.870
there's a lot of happiness and
00:13:12.880 --> 00:13:15.350
excitement and action on the field,
00:13:15.360 --> 00:13:16.150
>> football
00:13:16.160 --> 00:13:18.389
>> and football and yeah, app state stuff
00:13:18.399 --> 00:13:20.870
and and everything you've done. And then
00:13:20.880 --> 00:13:23.190
you were able to go in and take pictures
00:13:23.200 --> 00:13:27.030
of the place that made this place
00:13:27.040 --> 00:13:28.870
something
00:13:28.880 --> 00:13:32.629
literally of its collapse. How what was
00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:36.629
that like? Well, I know um back when I
00:13:36.639 --> 00:13:38.150
worked in Concord at a little printing
00:13:38.160 --> 00:13:41.509
shop, um I was able to drive up and just
00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:45.590
have like flex hours and um I could
00:13:45.600 --> 00:13:48.550
drive up and
00:13:48.560 --> 00:13:50.790
maybe for the hour and it wound up being
00:13:50.800 --> 00:13:53.590
two hours and I would make the time up.
00:13:53.600 --> 00:13:57.910
But when I decided to do that, um I had
00:13:57.920 --> 00:14:02.230
come up that day um to pay my bill at
00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:04.069
CTC
00:14:04.079 --> 00:14:04.550
and
00:14:04.560 --> 00:14:05.590
>> cord telephone.
00:14:05.600 --> 00:14:09.750
>> Yes. So what I had to do, I had to go by
00:14:09.760 --> 00:14:13.910
plant 4. Plant 4 was the first place to
00:14:13.920 --> 00:14:17.350
aka take the wrecking ball. And they had
00:14:17.360 --> 00:14:18.790
I don't know what they had hit that if
00:14:18.800 --> 00:14:20.550
you remember that little building that
00:14:20.560 --> 00:14:24.230
sat right up against the sidewalk. Oh,
00:14:24.240 --> 00:14:25.590
stop office.
00:14:25.600 --> 00:14:28.470
>> Yes. The metal building there. And
00:14:28.480 --> 00:14:30.790
>> it had like a little awning.
00:14:30.800 --> 00:14:34.710
>> But that when I saw I kind of I'm I'm a
00:14:34.720 --> 00:14:36.790
creature habit, you know. I'm probably
00:14:36.800 --> 00:14:39.670
part ADHD, too, cuz I I notice patterns
00:14:39.680 --> 00:14:41.430
and stuff and it it helps me in what I
00:14:41.440 --> 00:14:45.430
do. But, um, I drove by there and I saw
00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:48.069
something different and it just was like
00:14:48.079 --> 00:14:51.509
a spark. I'm like, it's it's actually
00:14:51.519 --> 00:14:52.710
here.
00:14:52.720 --> 00:14:55.110
They're going to start doing this and
00:14:55.120 --> 00:14:57.990
you know you you know it takes no time
00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:00.550
to bring something down
00:15:00.560 --> 00:15:03.269
than it does to build it like a homemade
00:15:03.279 --> 00:15:05.990
pound cake. Right. Right.
00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:09.509
>> So I made up my mind to go back and and
00:15:09.519 --> 00:15:11.990
talk to the owner uh where I work and
00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:14.949
said listen I I feel like I need to do
00:15:14.959 --> 00:15:18.069
this. And I knew my family's history in
00:15:18.079 --> 00:15:21.110
there and all the friends that uh I had
00:15:21.120 --> 00:15:25.030
worked with my dad uh in the mill, not
00:15:25.040 --> 00:15:26.710
for the mill, but in the mill when he
00:15:26.720 --> 00:15:29.670
got let go in the 80s, well, he he could
00:15:29.680 --> 00:15:31.189
have laid his hammer down and come back
00:15:31.199 --> 00:15:32.790
three weeks later and picked it up on
00:15:32.800 --> 00:15:36.150
the same job he went on.
00:15:36.160 --> 00:15:37.189
Crazy. Yeah.
00:15:37.199 --> 00:15:38.870
>> But I think a lot of people would use
00:15:38.880 --> 00:15:42.710
that word crazy. Um, but that allowed me
00:15:42.720 --> 00:15:45.670
to see, you know, what was in the mill
00:15:45.680 --> 00:15:50.389
and where, you know, roughly. Um, so
00:15:50.399 --> 00:15:52.069
when the time was, you know, when the
00:15:52.079 --> 00:15:56.870
time was there, um, I met, um, the folks
00:15:56.880 --> 00:15:59.829
that were bringing it down and just
00:15:59.839 --> 00:16:02.710
happened to pull in at the shop gate at
00:16:02.720 --> 00:16:05.670
the backside on the loop road and I just
00:16:05.680 --> 00:16:07.670
happened to have
00:16:07.680 --> 00:16:10.150
three Hardies biscuits with me.
00:16:10.160 --> 00:16:12.150
And um
00:16:12.160 --> 00:16:14.949
brother that spent like money. It spent
00:16:14.959 --> 00:16:16.790
just like money. Yeah. And I'll never
00:16:16.800 --> 00:16:18.629
forget his name was Walter.
00:16:18.639 --> 00:16:21.670
>> Um I went I met him and I just told him
00:16:21.680 --> 00:16:24.790
I'm just there to take some pictures and
00:16:24.800 --> 00:16:28.150
um document the history and that was all
00:16:28.160 --> 00:16:30.870
I had to say. And then I handed the
00:16:30.880 --> 00:16:32.389
biscuits and there was somebody else
00:16:32.399 --> 00:16:34.949
coming in too. But um I drove around the
00:16:34.959 --> 00:16:38.230
corner and there was Griffin Senior,
00:16:38.240 --> 00:16:41.189
Griffin Jr. and a a a guy like their
00:16:41.199 --> 00:16:42.629
number three. I think his name was
00:16:42.639 --> 00:16:43.749
Barry.
00:16:43.759 --> 00:16:47.509
>> But I I introduced myself and I'm good
00:16:47.519 --> 00:16:50.870
at barter. Um it's how I stay alive, I
00:16:50.880 --> 00:16:53.189
guess. But um I just told him I said
00:16:53.199 --> 00:16:55.670
listen I knew that I wasn't going to let
00:16:55.680 --> 00:16:58.230
him have the digitals but I would make
00:16:58.240 --> 00:16:59.990
the prints
00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:01.590
and it was worth spending the money on
00:17:01.600 --> 00:17:03.829
the prints to have the digitals for
00:17:03.839 --> 00:17:07.350
years to come cuz I I knew sooner or
00:17:07.360 --> 00:17:09.909
later there'd be anniversary years.
00:17:09.919 --> 00:17:12.309
There would be folks that
00:17:12.319 --> 00:17:16.470
wanted to know. And I mean the way I
00:17:16.480 --> 00:17:17.510
looked at it, nobody's going to do it
00:17:17.520 --> 00:17:18.470
unless I do it.
00:17:18.480 --> 00:17:22.390
>> True. I mean, you brought so many images
00:17:22.400 --> 00:17:26.710
into homes that no one had ever seen,
00:17:26.720 --> 00:17:27.029
right?
00:17:27.039 --> 00:17:30.630
>> And then it was just reality. When you
00:17:30.640 --> 00:17:32.950
went into plant for you, you could see
00:17:32.960 --> 00:17:35.110
here to the highway.
00:17:35.120 --> 00:17:37.430
It was just all wooden floor and columns
00:17:37.440 --> 00:17:40.070
and and and like you said, that was the
00:17:40.080 --> 00:17:43.110
reality when I went through it. Saw that
00:17:43.120 --> 00:17:45.350
it was all but torn down. Yeah,
00:17:45.360 --> 00:17:47.590
>> that was the that was the longest weave
00:17:47.600 --> 00:17:50.310
room in the world
00:17:50.320 --> 00:17:53.029
>> lengthwise. There was not one bigger
00:17:53.039 --> 00:17:55.029
>> and that was the case when it was torn
00:17:55.039 --> 00:17:56.390
down as far as I know.
00:17:56.400 --> 00:17:56.870
>> Yeah.
00:17:56.880 --> 00:17:59.430
>> So, I mean, you're you know, like the
00:17:59.440 --> 00:18:01.669
water tank, you know, when even in our
00:18:01.679 --> 00:18:05.270
lifetime, it was the still the second
00:18:05.280 --> 00:18:09.029
tallest tower in the world. And and it
00:18:09.039 --> 00:18:12.150
was still the tallest on this side of
00:18:12.160 --> 00:18:14.950
the Mississippi River when it fell. Mhm.
00:18:14.960 --> 00:18:16.710
>> And
00:18:16.720 --> 00:18:18.710
built to be the tallest in the world
00:18:18.720 --> 00:18:22.710
during World War II. And you know that I
00:18:22.720 --> 00:18:25.510
remember driving back from Kataba every
00:18:25.520 --> 00:18:28.630
day coming down 29 and I would look for
00:18:28.640 --> 00:18:30.950
that water tank because it would peak
00:18:30.960 --> 00:18:33.590
above the tree line. When you go past
00:18:33.600 --> 00:18:37.029
old ' 80s Ford Road, you'd see it and
00:18:37.039 --> 00:18:38.870
you know then it would kind of fade out
00:18:38.880 --> 00:18:42.150
of sight. And I never will forget while
00:18:42.160 --> 00:18:44.470
I was
00:18:44.480 --> 00:18:46.549
driving, you know, back and forth to
00:18:46.559 --> 00:18:48.230
school
00:18:48.240 --> 00:18:52.870
the day that it wasn't there.
00:18:52.880 --> 00:18:54.630
>> It had been there all that time and then
00:18:54.640 --> 00:18:57.110
all of a sudden I looked and it wasn't
00:18:57.120 --> 00:18:58.789
there. And you know, of course, we were
00:18:58.799 --> 00:19:01.110
downtown when it fell and and took
00:19:01.120 --> 00:19:02.630
pictures and videoed it and all that
00:19:02.640 --> 00:19:03.590
stuff, but
00:19:03.600 --> 00:19:06.310
>> to see it the first time be gone from
00:19:06.320 --> 00:19:09.750
our skyline was was impactful to me. The
00:19:09.760 --> 00:19:10.549
change hit you.
00:19:10.559 --> 00:19:12.390
>> The change hit me. Yes. No doubt.
00:19:12.400 --> 00:19:13.190
>> For sure.
00:19:13.200 --> 00:19:13.750
>> Yeah.
00:19:13.760 --> 00:19:16.150
>> Um, so I guess how many pictures did you
00:19:16.160 --> 00:19:19.190
end up taking? I guess if plant one and
00:19:19.200 --> 00:19:22.470
plant four combined is it I'm sure it's
00:19:22.480 --> 00:19:24.390
thousands, but
00:19:24.400 --> 00:19:25.510
>> over 25,000.
00:19:25.520 --> 00:19:27.590
>> Holy cow.
00:19:27.600 --> 00:19:28.070
>> Yeah.
00:19:28.080 --> 00:19:28.950
>> Had to be crazy.
00:19:28.960 --> 00:19:32.230
>> It It got to where I I thought in the
00:19:32.240 --> 00:19:34.390
beginning I thought I would go up once a
00:19:34.400 --> 00:19:36.070
week
00:19:36.080 --> 00:19:36.549
>> every day.
00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:38.630
>> It was an addiction.
00:19:38.640 --> 00:19:40.870
It was an addiction. As long as my Honda
00:19:40.880 --> 00:19:43.510
Accord could make it through red clay
00:19:43.520 --> 00:19:45.990
dirt, you know, after a rain or
00:19:46.000 --> 00:19:48.310
something. Um,
00:19:48.320 --> 00:19:50.070
yeah, I packed a lot of red dirt up
00:19:50.080 --> 00:19:52.310
under the the skirt of that car.
00:19:52.320 --> 00:19:55.510
>> Did you ever get any of the garage?
00:19:55.520 --> 00:19:57.590
>> Uh, let's see. On the backside?
00:19:57.600 --> 00:19:59.830
>> Yeah, on the big green garage.
00:19:59.840 --> 00:20:01.590
>> Let's see. I remember shooting outside.
00:20:01.600 --> 00:20:02.549
I remember
00:20:02.559 --> 00:20:05.029
>> cuz that's where my dad worked 25 years.
00:20:05.039 --> 00:20:07.029
>> Yeah. Let's see.
00:20:07.039 --> 00:20:09.430
That was up there on the heel at the
00:20:09.440 --> 00:20:11.430
corner at the fire department. Yeah,
00:20:11.440 --> 00:20:11.990
gate 10.
00:20:12.000 --> 00:20:14.549
>> Gate 10. Yep.
00:20:14.559 --> 00:20:16.710
>> I'm trying to place myself inside that
00:20:16.720 --> 00:20:18.230
building
00:20:18.240 --> 00:20:19.270
>> had a big uh
00:20:19.280 --> 00:20:20.549
>> I want to say they kept that locked
00:20:20.559 --> 00:20:21.190
because of
00:20:21.200 --> 00:20:22.630
>> It was right across from the Elm Street
00:20:22.640 --> 00:20:23.270
Church.
00:20:23.280 --> 00:20:25.510
>> They used it to the very end. They used
00:20:25.520 --> 00:20:25.909
it for their
00:20:25.919 --> 00:20:27.990
>> equip [clears throat]
00:20:28.000 --> 00:20:30.549
they even let me uh when they knew they
00:20:30.559 --> 00:20:32.390
were going to get pictures, they were
00:20:32.400 --> 00:20:35.909
like, "Hey, Chad, call me by name." Um,
00:20:35.919 --> 00:20:39.669
you want to use the Gator today? I went
00:20:39.679 --> 00:20:42.070
I tried it one time, [laughter]
00:20:42.080 --> 00:20:44.390
but I've got cameras. I can't wear
00:20:44.400 --> 00:20:46.870
cameras and drive, you know. I've never
00:20:46.880 --> 00:20:50.549
been able to do that, but it swirls dust
00:20:50.559 --> 00:20:52.310
>> and there was a lot of dust.
00:20:52.320 --> 00:20:54.149
>> And so I I went to walking,
00:20:54.159 --> 00:20:55.350
>> right? Walked the whole thing.
00:20:55.360 --> 00:20:57.029
>> Yeah, I walked the whole thing around it
00:20:57.039 --> 00:20:58.149
and
00:20:58.159 --> 00:20:59.590
>> space. Wow. I'd love to see some of the
00:20:59.600 --> 00:21:02.950
die department where I worked at
00:21:02.960 --> 00:21:04.630
dungeon kind of down there in the the
00:21:04.640 --> 00:21:05.990
bottom parts that I worked at. Pretty
00:21:06.000 --> 00:21:06.230
cool.
00:21:06.240 --> 00:21:09.270
>> Real mill guys were in there.
00:21:09.280 --> 00:21:11.909
>> Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh, I know. Exactly. When
00:21:11.919 --> 00:21:13.830
you you guys are bringing things up when
00:21:13.840 --> 00:21:16.310
I worked there with dad.
00:21:16.320 --> 00:21:18.310
Yeah. All right. The die range. But then
00:21:18.320 --> 00:21:20.789
it was a a ramp to go down.
00:21:20.799 --> 00:21:22.149
>> All the die barrels were there.
00:21:22.159 --> 00:21:23.750
>> Yeah. That's where I worked. I ran the
00:21:23.760 --> 00:21:25.590
dock with those barrels. That basement
00:21:25.600 --> 00:21:26.950
was nothing but barrels.
00:21:26.960 --> 00:21:29.430
>> Okay. I remember
00:21:29.440 --> 00:21:33.270
how
00:21:33.280 --> 00:21:36.470
big cockroaches [laughter]
00:21:36.480 --> 00:21:39.990
>> and and well the size if I'm if I'm not
00:21:40.000 --> 00:21:41.430
mistaken that's the name of it. It was a
00:21:41.440 --> 00:21:43.909
powder. it. They would dump the size in
00:21:43.919 --> 00:21:45.350
with the bleach and all that stuff and
00:21:45.360 --> 00:21:47.270
it really whitened the cotton
00:21:47.280 --> 00:21:49.590
>> and that's kind of what you smelled when
00:21:49.600 --> 00:21:52.230
you would walk up ma main street before
00:21:52.240 --> 00:21:53.990
you got to the
00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:55.990
>> everyone thought it was a cotton smell
00:21:56.000 --> 00:21:56.470
but it was
00:21:56.480 --> 00:21:58.549
>> no that was the die smell.
00:21:58.559 --> 00:22:00.549
>> But I remember
00:22:00.559 --> 00:22:04.149
I remember the dye range
00:22:04.159 --> 00:22:06.070
and I remember jobs that we had to do.
00:22:06.080 --> 00:22:08.950
We had to bust out some vermiculite and
00:22:08.960 --> 00:22:11.669
repour the vermiculite which is like a
00:22:11.679 --> 00:22:14.149
lightweight concrete.
00:22:14.159 --> 00:22:15.550
You're bringing stuff back now.
00:22:15.560 --> 00:22:15.909
[laughter]
00:22:15.919 --> 00:22:18.710
>> So So your your dad worked in that area
00:22:18.720 --> 00:22:20.310
or I know he was carpenter.
00:22:20.320 --> 00:22:22.149
>> He was a he was a carpenter but
00:22:22.159 --> 00:22:23.909
>> he was just working on random stuff,
00:22:23.919 --> 00:22:25.270
>> right? But when they they let him go and
00:22:25.280 --> 00:22:27.430
he went back then he became a
00:22:27.440 --> 00:22:29.990
superintendent. He had six employees now
00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:33.029
under him which he grew up if you want
00:22:33.039 --> 00:22:35.909
to call it that. um became more of a
00:22:35.919 --> 00:22:38.149
professional. He he had to, you know,
00:22:38.159 --> 00:22:40.789
work with folks under him, but um no,
00:22:40.799 --> 00:22:43.430
but we did a lot of knocking it down,
00:22:43.440 --> 00:22:44.390
building it back.
00:22:44.400 --> 00:22:44.950
>> Gotcha.
00:22:44.960 --> 00:22:47.190
>> walls, patching holes, busting up
00:22:47.200 --> 00:22:49.669
concrete floors. My knees are still kind
00:22:49.679 --> 00:22:51.590
of shot from that, but um
00:22:51.600 --> 00:22:54.070
>> Well, your dad was a great guy. He was
00:22:54.080 --> 00:22:56.149
just phenomenal.
00:22:56.159 --> 00:22:57.190
>> Phenomenal guy.
00:22:57.200 --> 00:22:59.510
>> Yeah.
00:22:59.520 --> 00:23:01.750
But yeah, I I mean that that just has to
00:23:01.760 --> 00:23:04.950
be an incredible thing to be given that
00:23:04.960 --> 00:23:07.830
gift to go in there and and take all
00:23:07.840 --> 00:23:10.470
those pictures and and you know, it's
00:23:10.480 --> 00:23:11.750
one thing to take a picture of a
00:23:11.760 --> 00:23:15.430
building, but you've taken pictures of
00:23:15.440 --> 00:23:18.870
like that sign you brought for example.
00:23:18.880 --> 00:23:19.510
>> Mhm.
00:23:19.520 --> 00:23:22.230
>> The the details of things that people
00:23:22.240 --> 00:23:24.070
don't think about. For example, one of
00:23:24.080 --> 00:23:25.430
the things I think about when I think
00:23:25.440 --> 00:23:27.909
about the garage is going in the
00:23:27.919 --> 00:23:32.470
bathroom there as a kid, this big round
00:23:32.480 --> 00:23:33.669
uh sink. Oh, yeah.
00:23:33.679 --> 00:23:36.070
>> You would step on the thing and all this
00:23:36.080 --> 00:23:39.590
water would come like a sprinkler.
00:23:39.600 --> 00:23:40.950
That's the coolest thing. I wish I had
00:23:40.960 --> 00:23:42.789
one in here. Oh, yeah. I'd have that
00:23:42.799 --> 00:23:45.110
thing running, you know? I mean, just
00:23:45.120 --> 00:23:47.110
and and to think about all the guys
00:23:47.120 --> 00:23:49.350
working on trucks and and stuff
00:23:49.360 --> 00:23:50.789
>> scrubbing out going in there scrubbing
00:23:50.799 --> 00:23:53.830
out all at the same time. Kind of like
00:23:53.840 --> 00:23:55.510
those troughs at the racetrack.
00:23:55.520 --> 00:23:57.990
Everybody's just peeing in. [laughter]
00:23:58.000 --> 00:24:00.950
>> Yeah. What What's the bathtub doing?
00:24:00.960 --> 00:24:02.789
Wilsboro comes to mind.
00:24:02.799 --> 00:24:03.430
>> Oh man.
00:24:03.440 --> 00:24:05.750
>> Oh my gosh, man. That was great.
00:24:05.760 --> 00:24:09.190
>> There I got to stand in a tunnel which
00:24:09.200 --> 00:24:12.230
was right across from uh Ktown Furniture
00:24:12.240 --> 00:24:13.990
>> in the parking lot there.
00:24:14.000 --> 00:24:17.029
>> Um I got to stand on top of distribution
00:24:17.039 --> 00:24:19.510
and see Charlotte. I got a picture of
00:24:19.520 --> 00:24:22.789
that. Um, no picture from the tunnel. It
00:24:22.799 --> 00:24:25.990
was it was too way too dark. Um,
00:24:26.000 --> 00:24:28.149
>> but you know that was a high area over
00:24:28.159 --> 00:24:32.230
there with that water tank stoate.
00:24:32.240 --> 00:24:33.990
You remember hill? They had a hill.
00:24:34.000 --> 00:24:35.350
Yeah. Maple Hill.
00:24:35.360 --> 00:24:37.269
>> Oh yeah. Well,
00:24:37.279 --> 00:24:38.549
>> that's the way you look at it.
00:24:38.559 --> 00:24:38.789
>> Yeah.
00:24:38.799 --> 00:24:40.710
>> I remember for the the houses that were
00:24:40.720 --> 00:24:42.390
in there for a while.
00:24:42.400 --> 00:24:44.390
>> My mom grew up on those houses.
00:24:44.400 --> 00:24:44.950
>> Independence.
00:24:44.960 --> 00:24:45.750
>> Maple Hill.
00:24:45.760 --> 00:24:46.070
>> Yep.
00:24:46.080 --> 00:24:47.029
>> He lived on Maple Street.
00:24:47.039 --> 00:24:48.470
>> I got pictures of those houses, too, I
00:24:48.480 --> 00:24:48.630
think.
00:24:48.640 --> 00:24:50.310
>> Yeah. Independence. Independence is like
00:24:50.320 --> 00:24:51.350
right under the tower.
00:24:51.360 --> 00:24:53.190
>> Yeah, it was that was a shorter street
00:24:53.200 --> 00:24:54.470
and then Maple
00:24:54.480 --> 00:24:56.230
>> Maple Street went all the way up to the
00:24:56.240 --> 00:24:57.110
tower
00:24:57.120 --> 00:24:59.510
>> and she lived under the tower. Their
00:24:59.520 --> 00:25:01.909
house was right up there and when it
00:25:01.919 --> 00:25:04.950
would I guess blow off excess water, you
00:25:04.960 --> 00:25:07.029
know, they would go out there and and
00:25:07.039 --> 00:25:09.269
summer and play in it. Water just it was
00:25:09.279 --> 00:25:10.230
like a big shower.
00:25:10.240 --> 00:25:11.190
>> Wow. Yeah.
00:25:11.200 --> 00:25:14.549
>> And um so what was the most interesting
00:25:14.559 --> 00:25:16.390
thing you saw in the meal or the most
00:25:16.400 --> 00:25:19.110
unexpected thing that you saw that you
00:25:19.120 --> 00:25:19.909
photographed?
00:25:19.919 --> 00:25:24.230
>> Okay. I prepared mentally for this. Um
00:25:24.240 --> 00:25:27.669
there was in the between the third and
00:25:27.679 --> 00:25:29.510
fourth floor
00:25:29.520 --> 00:25:32.149
uh when I was going up
00:25:32.159 --> 00:25:35.510
to to check out up there um I was
00:25:35.520 --> 00:25:38.549
interested in the floors.
00:25:38.559 --> 00:25:41.350
that it was kil dried maple floor tongue
00:25:41.360 --> 00:25:44.390
and groove and um I was just curious to
00:25:44.400 --> 00:25:45.669
see what the fourth floor looked like.
00:25:45.679 --> 00:25:49.430
It was probably pristine and it was um
00:25:49.440 --> 00:25:51.830
but I remember that third door closing
00:25:51.840 --> 00:25:55.110
in the stairwell and before it closed
00:25:55.120 --> 00:25:56.630
there was a wheat pole knocked in the
00:25:56.640 --> 00:25:58.789
side so I was getting ambient light so I
00:25:58.799 --> 00:26:02.390
had I could see but I had the mag light
00:26:02.400 --> 00:26:04.710
ready and I I got up the first flight of
00:26:04.720 --> 00:26:07.350
steps got on the landing. Thank God I
00:26:07.360 --> 00:26:08.630
was on the landing cuz when that door
00:26:08.640 --> 00:26:11.350
closed and the glass was blocked, the
00:26:11.360 --> 00:26:13.510
security glass.
00:26:13.520 --> 00:26:17.990
It was the darkest place I'd ever been.
00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:20.310
I got dizzy. Almost fell down. I had to
00:26:20.320 --> 00:26:22.310
lean against the wall. It was that dark.
00:26:22.320 --> 00:26:24.789
I didn't expect it. Look, I mean, look,
00:26:24.799 --> 00:26:26.789
I'm getting chills talking about it. It
00:26:26.799 --> 00:26:28.230
It scared me really.
00:26:28.240 --> 00:26:30.230
>> So, was that old distribution center or
00:26:30.240 --> 00:26:33.029
was that the towel distribution?
00:26:33.039 --> 00:26:36.950
>> Um, let's see. That was that was the one
00:26:36.960 --> 00:26:40.390
closest to the loop road. It was right
00:26:40.400 --> 00:26:40.630
there
00:26:40.640 --> 00:26:42.470
>> where the dot department is in the
00:26:42.480 --> 00:26:44.230
>> Well, we're I was fourth floor in the
00:26:44.240 --> 00:26:46.470
stairwell
00:26:46.480 --> 00:26:47.909
>> because
00:26:47.919 --> 00:26:49.909
>> I think
00:26:49.919 --> 00:26:51.669
>> Yeah, I think that's where all the
00:26:51.679 --> 00:26:54.549
safety awards were on the wall. Third
00:26:54.559 --> 00:26:57.510
floor, fourth floor. Anyway, I I didn't
00:26:57.520 --> 00:26:58.789
reward.
00:26:58.799 --> 00:27:00.549
>> So, how what did you do in those dark
00:27:00.559 --> 00:27:02.950
areas?
00:27:02.960 --> 00:27:04.870
have lighting with you or your flash?
00:27:04.880 --> 00:27:06.630
>> I had a mag light like a police mag
00:27:06.640 --> 00:27:08.470
light. The long ones. Yeah,
00:27:08.480 --> 00:27:10.789
>> that was enough to get decent pictures.
00:27:10.799 --> 00:27:15.029
>> Yeah, I mean it wasn't pitch dark. Um
00:27:15.039 --> 00:27:18.470
the only time Well, pitch dark. Uh, but
00:27:18.480 --> 00:27:21.350
if I was out there at night, there's
00:27:21.360 --> 00:27:22.950
pictures
00:27:22.960 --> 00:27:26.470
where I set up um in the um middle of
00:27:26.480 --> 00:27:28.789
the railroad track that came in off
00:27:28.799 --> 00:27:29.750
Maine
00:27:29.760 --> 00:27:31.830
>> and I knew I wanted to get the shot of
00:27:31.840 --> 00:27:36.149
the um smoke stacks and it was a full
00:27:36.159 --> 00:27:38.149
moon, but the full moon was right over
00:27:38.159 --> 00:27:41.830
the the the train depot.
00:27:41.840 --> 00:27:45.669
So, I'm like, what can I do different?
00:27:45.679 --> 00:27:47.830
So, I turned the mag light on, set the
00:27:47.840 --> 00:27:51.110
camera for 30 seconds, ran that light
00:27:51.120 --> 00:27:53.669
above the camera down the tracks, and
00:27:53.679 --> 00:27:55.190
just kind of let it pulled for a little
00:27:55.200 --> 00:27:56.789
bit.
00:27:56.799 --> 00:27:58.870
I got to thinking before I did it, I'm
00:27:58.880 --> 00:28:00.789
like, well, you know, the railroad
00:28:00.799 --> 00:28:03.190
brought a lot of materials to build the
00:28:03.200 --> 00:28:04.710
mill.
00:28:04.720 --> 00:28:06.470
And you could kind of say that the
00:28:06.480 --> 00:28:08.950
railroad was the lifeline.
00:28:08.960 --> 00:28:11.669
So, how can I how can I show a lifeline
00:28:11.679 --> 00:28:15.909
in the dark with light? So when you see
00:28:15.919 --> 00:28:17.750
that image,
00:28:17.760 --> 00:28:19.750
um, it looks like it there's electricity
00:28:19.760 --> 00:28:21.669
in the in the to me that's what it looks
00:28:21.679 --> 00:28:22.230
like.
00:28:22.240 --> 00:28:24.149
>> That's what I was trying to convey. But
00:28:24.159 --> 00:28:28.149
and I just titled it lifeline. And a
00:28:28.159 --> 00:28:30.630
story I had with uh KHA the other night
00:28:30.640 --> 00:28:32.070
was
00:28:32.080 --> 00:28:36.310
>> I've never been cooed at by
00:28:36.320 --> 00:28:39.190
a dove [laughter] in the dark. It had to
00:28:39.200 --> 00:28:41.590
be or a pigeon. Maybe it was a pigeon.
00:28:41.600 --> 00:28:45.110
But it scared the fire out of me.
00:28:45.120 --> 00:28:45.909
>> Yeah.
00:28:45.919 --> 00:28:47.269
>> I I don't
00:28:47.279 --> 00:28:48.149
>> kind of spooky.
00:28:48.159 --> 00:28:49.990
>> Yeah, I guarantee there's some spooky
00:28:50.000 --> 00:28:51.430
places cuz there was spooky places when
00:28:51.440 --> 00:28:52.870
I worked there when the mill was
00:28:52.880 --> 00:28:54.310
running. So, I can only imagine
00:28:54.320 --> 00:28:55.110
>> lit up.
00:28:55.120 --> 00:28:56.630
>> So, it's interesting you bring up the
00:28:56.640 --> 00:28:58.230
railroad because he and I have talked
00:28:58.240 --> 00:29:01.190
about this. He So, we did a I don't know
00:29:01.200 --> 00:29:03.990
if you've seen our theme song that we
00:29:04.000 --> 00:29:06.470
put together and the video that we made
00:29:06.480 --> 00:29:08.310
for that, but it's all about
00:29:08.320 --> 00:29:11.110
Canapapolis, of course. And the the
00:29:11.120 --> 00:29:13.590
video starts out showing the railroad
00:29:13.600 --> 00:29:17.110
tracks in downtown where where you're
00:29:17.120 --> 00:29:19.750
talking about beside where the old depot
00:29:19.760 --> 00:29:20.789
used to be and
00:29:20.799 --> 00:29:23.029
>> where the sign is. where the can yeah
00:29:23.039 --> 00:29:25.830
the original canapo sign is and and
00:29:25.840 --> 00:29:28.389
where the railroad went in off of the
00:29:28.399 --> 00:29:30.870
tracks across Main Street into the mill.
00:29:30.880 --> 00:29:32.870
And if you look at those that drawn
00:29:32.880 --> 00:29:37.110
image that that Chris got, you see five
00:29:37.120 --> 00:29:40.470
or six tracks still there. That's
00:29:40.480 --> 00:29:43.590
literally the only thing left
00:29:43.600 --> 00:29:46.310
>> that even gives any semblance of what
00:29:46.320 --> 00:29:47.750
used to be there
00:29:47.760 --> 00:29:49.510
>> because there's no other place on that
00:29:49.520 --> 00:29:51.269
railroad line that there's five or six
00:29:51.279 --> 00:29:52.149
tracks.
00:29:52.159 --> 00:29:53.990
>> And you're exactly right. You know, it
00:29:54.000 --> 00:29:57.750
wasn't what in the last 20 years that
00:29:57.760 --> 00:30:01.590
above 18th Street up there, uh, it went
00:30:01.600 --> 00:30:03.909
to two lanes. Yeah. Just one track. One
00:30:03.919 --> 00:30:04.710
track.
00:30:04.720 --> 00:30:05.990
>> And but
00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:08.149
>> but you had all that storage capacity
00:30:08.159 --> 00:30:08.549
right there.
00:30:08.559 --> 00:30:10.389
>> That's right. for all the side tracks.
00:30:10.399 --> 00:30:13.830
But you had two crossings there at plant
00:30:13.840 --> 00:30:15.350
one and one at plant four.
00:30:15.360 --> 00:30:16.070
>> Plant four.
00:30:16.080 --> 00:30:17.750
>> A lot of people don't remember that
00:30:17.760 --> 00:30:20.070
second one at plant one. The one that
00:30:20.080 --> 00:30:21.909
was on the very north side, right?
00:30:21.919 --> 00:30:23.669
>> I've I've said to, you know, to people,
00:30:23.679 --> 00:30:25.029
do you remember that one up there? I
00:30:25.039 --> 00:30:26.389
don't remember that one cuz the the one
00:30:26.399 --> 00:30:27.750
they remember is the one that you're
00:30:27.760 --> 00:30:30.070
talking about.
00:30:30.080 --> 00:30:30.710
Yeah. Yeah.
00:30:30.720 --> 00:30:33.029
>> Cuz that other one was torn up when I
00:30:33.039 --> 00:30:33.510
was a kid.
00:30:33.520 --> 00:30:34.389
>> There's still a little bit of a hump
00:30:34.399 --> 00:30:36.389
there. You can see
00:30:36.399 --> 00:30:38.149
out there in that grass. You can still
00:30:38.159 --> 00:30:38.549
see it.
00:30:38.559 --> 00:30:40.070
>> It's still kind of there. I was sitting
00:30:40.080 --> 00:30:42.230
I was sitting on Dave on Chuck's front
00:30:42.240 --> 00:30:43.836
porch when we got that video and he
00:30:43.846 --> 00:30:45.350
[laughter] he he was he was directing
00:30:45.360 --> 00:30:46.470
me. He's like, "No, you got to go right
00:30:46.480 --> 00:30:46.789
there."
00:30:46.799 --> 00:30:47.830
>> Yeah, that's a perfect shot.
00:30:47.840 --> 00:30:49.590
>> It was perfect. It is perfect.
00:30:49.600 --> 00:30:50.950
>> I remember the phone booth that used to
00:30:50.960 --> 00:30:52.950
be up there at the at the one going in
00:30:52.960 --> 00:30:54.789
at the smoke stacks.
00:30:54.799 --> 00:30:55.190
>> Yes.
00:30:55.200 --> 00:30:57.750
>> That I just I wish I knew who got that
00:30:57.760 --> 00:30:58.470
phone booth.
00:30:58.480 --> 00:31:01.669
>> Do it. But what was so cool was if you
00:31:01.679 --> 00:31:03.590
happened to be going up Main Street or
00:31:03.600 --> 00:31:07.269
down Main Street back then is when the
00:31:07.279 --> 00:31:10.470
the locomotive had gone into the mill
00:31:10.480 --> 00:31:13.350
with four or five cars and you'd come by
00:31:13.360 --> 00:31:15.510
and you look in there and you see this
00:31:15.520 --> 00:31:17.669
>> big railroad
00:31:17.679 --> 00:31:18.950
locomotive sitting there
00:31:18.960 --> 00:31:21.669
>> and inside it actually branched off into
00:31:21.679 --> 00:31:24.389
a couple different trees all places cuz
00:31:24.399 --> 00:31:26.870
you know where I managed unloading the
00:31:26.880 --> 00:31:28.870
the trucks at the D department. We also
00:31:28.880 --> 00:31:30.950
had
00:31:30.960 --> 00:31:32.870
>> of costic or whatever it was that we
00:31:32.880 --> 00:31:34.789
would have right
00:31:34.799 --> 00:31:37.430
>> sit there kind of in between
00:31:37.440 --> 00:31:40.230
distribution center and and the parts of
00:31:40.240 --> 00:31:43.269
>> and Chad's right the railroad part was
00:31:43.279 --> 00:31:46.710
was a big part of the mill system from
00:31:46.720 --> 00:31:49.190
start to finish and you know a lot of
00:31:49.200 --> 00:31:50.789
that's still overlooked.
00:31:50.799 --> 00:31:53.029
>> That's I mean that's really really why
00:31:53.039 --> 00:31:55.590
that site was chosen. Yeah. I mean, it
00:31:55.600 --> 00:31:58.230
it cut our farm in two when the railroad
00:31:58.240 --> 00:31:59.509
came through, but
00:31:59.519 --> 00:32:01.590
>> it that's what gave it access to the
00:32:01.600 --> 00:32:03.750
world, that railroad.
00:32:03.760 --> 00:32:05.669
>> That's just so cool to think about all
00:32:05.679 --> 00:32:06.710
that. Awesome.
00:32:06.720 --> 00:32:08.470
>> You know, have somebody and I don't
00:32:08.480 --> 00:32:11.590
know, maybe there's a way to if he could
00:32:11.600 --> 00:32:13.750
u give us links to some of these
00:32:13.760 --> 00:32:15.750
pictures you could embed in the video.
00:32:15.760 --> 00:32:17.269
>> Well, I'm sure I've seen a lot of your
00:32:17.279 --> 00:32:19.590
photos like on social media. I have a
00:32:19.600 --> 00:32:20.789
feeling there's probably thousands that
00:32:20.799 --> 00:32:22.070
nobody's ever seen.
00:32:22.080 --> 00:32:25.830
>> 25,000. The other the other ones are um
00:32:25.840 --> 00:32:30.070
on CD that was the technology then um
00:32:30.080 --> 00:32:32.630
but the more picturesque
00:32:32.640 --> 00:32:35.509
if you will if I can use that word um
00:32:35.519 --> 00:32:38.549
are what's on social media. So I want to
00:32:38.559 --> 00:32:42.950
in, you know, evoke
00:32:42.960 --> 00:32:44.549
emotion,
00:32:44.559 --> 00:32:46.630
especially for folks that were never in
00:32:46.640 --> 00:32:48.070
there, never worked there.
00:32:48.080 --> 00:32:50.230
>> And one of my top three is the is the
00:32:50.240 --> 00:32:52.230
water tower falling, you know, with all
00:32:52.240 --> 00:32:53.350
the shots of it.
00:32:53.360 --> 00:32:53.669
>> Oh,
00:32:53.679 --> 00:32:54.870
>> and that's just
00:32:54.880 --> 00:32:56.149
>> Oh, you know who I was standing right
00:32:56.159 --> 00:32:57.830
beside when that happened? Oh.
00:32:57.840 --> 00:33:01.029
>> On day two, actually both days I found
00:33:01.039 --> 00:33:02.549
him and stood right there at Norris
00:33:02.559 --> 00:33:04.149
during Oh, wow. Yeah.
00:33:04.159 --> 00:33:06.070
>> Was that on the the first, second, or
00:33:06.080 --> 00:33:07.590
third attempt?
00:33:07.600 --> 00:33:10.149
Well, I thought there were two attempts.
00:33:10.159 --> 00:33:11.909
>> Three. Well, there was two attempts and
00:33:11.919 --> 00:33:12.950
then the final.
00:33:12.960 --> 00:33:13.430
>> Yeah.
00:33:13.440 --> 00:33:15.509
>> The first attempt they tried to pull it
00:33:15.519 --> 00:33:17.190
over with a cable.
00:33:17.200 --> 00:33:17.750
>> That didn't work.
00:33:17.760 --> 00:33:18.870
>> Oh, that's okay. That's right.
00:33:18.880 --> 00:33:21.830
>> Second time they blew out the legs and
00:33:21.840 --> 00:33:23.110
it didn't fall.
00:33:23.120 --> 00:33:25.190
>> And then the third attempt they blew out
00:33:25.200 --> 00:33:26.070
the final.
00:33:26.080 --> 00:33:26.310
>> Yeah.
00:33:26.320 --> 00:33:27.830
>> I mean, it had to go then, but
00:33:27.840 --> 00:33:29.350
>> the first time they used, you know,
00:33:29.360 --> 00:33:30.710
pyro,
00:33:30.720 --> 00:33:32.630
>> I'm standing right there and I can hear
00:33:32.640 --> 00:33:35.350
other people and they, "Is it moving?" I
00:33:35.360 --> 00:33:37.830
think it's moving. I'm like I'm just
00:33:37.840 --> 00:33:40.070
looking through the camera. I if it
00:33:40.080 --> 00:33:42.310
moves I'll see it but I can't naked eye
00:33:42.320 --> 00:33:45.430
it because if I do then I'm not doing
00:33:45.440 --> 00:33:48.710
Yeah. Do over. No.
00:33:48.720 --> 00:33:52.230
>> Same thing with the stacks. I I had I
00:33:52.240 --> 00:33:53.830
told the group I had
00:33:53.840 --> 00:33:57.350
>> both cameras on um to shoot wide shoot
00:33:57.360 --> 00:34:00.870
tight and then I had little sideline
00:34:00.880 --> 00:34:04.870
thing here. CTC had their uh phone book
00:34:04.880 --> 00:34:08.790
cover contest. I won that. Um that
00:34:08.800 --> 00:34:12.149
camera was the the the win. I had it
00:34:12.159 --> 00:34:14.149
velcroed to the top of that fence
00:34:14.159 --> 00:34:16.310
running.
00:34:16.320 --> 00:34:19.750
All I could hear after the fog sat and
00:34:19.760 --> 00:34:22.629
they they're like, "Oh, Charlie Cannon.
00:34:22.639 --> 00:34:24.629
He don't want it to go." I'm like I'm
00:34:24.639 --> 00:34:26.389
like,
00:34:26.399 --> 00:34:28.069
"I've got to be ready." You know, and
00:34:28.079 --> 00:34:30.069
when it does and then the fog, you know,
00:34:30.079 --> 00:34:31.990
come up. Then I think it sat down again,
00:34:32.000 --> 00:34:34.950
but they eventually set the uh the
00:34:34.960 --> 00:34:37.510
sirens to to countdown for the
00:34:37.520 --> 00:34:41.430
explosives. And I got that.
00:34:41.440 --> 00:34:43.430
>> Yeah. I I couldn't shoot it too fast
00:34:43.440 --> 00:34:46.470
because, you know, if you do, it's got
00:34:46.480 --> 00:34:48.790
to right to the card. And if you choke
00:34:48.800 --> 00:34:51.669
that camera, then it just shuts off.
00:34:51.679 --> 00:34:53.589
>> So, lot of skill. It mess up.
00:34:53.599 --> 00:34:57.750
>> So, I had to, you know, I can't hear the
00:34:57.760 --> 00:35:00.310
like the initial what do you call them?
00:35:00.320 --> 00:35:02.069
Um,
00:35:02.079 --> 00:35:04.390
I don't know. There's little explosives
00:35:04.400 --> 00:35:06.950
that ignite the trunk line, right? Um,
00:35:06.960 --> 00:35:10.390
that you know sets the big ones. But
00:35:10.400 --> 00:35:10.870
>> yeah,
00:35:10.880 --> 00:35:12.390
>> I remember standing over there on Ridge
00:35:12.400 --> 00:35:14.710
Avenue for the water tank and
00:35:14.720 --> 00:35:16.390
>> what people were saying, especially when
00:35:16.400 --> 00:35:18.390
it didn't fall the first and second
00:35:18.400 --> 00:35:20.230
time, [laughter] saying, "Mr. Canon
00:35:20.240 --> 00:35:21.670
don't want it to go."
00:35:21.680 --> 00:35:23.349
>> And uh, and it was people cheering. I
00:35:23.359 --> 00:35:24.390
mean, because it didn't fall.
00:35:24.400 --> 00:35:25.829
>> I know it. [laughter] I mean, people was
00:35:25.839 --> 00:35:28.069
going nuts and uh
00:35:28.079 --> 00:35:30.790
>> I I mean, that was that was big for that
00:35:30.800 --> 00:35:31.990
thing to fall down.
00:35:32.000 --> 00:35:33.349
>> But, you know, it's a testament to
00:35:33.359 --> 00:35:35.589
everything else that was built up there.
00:35:35.599 --> 00:35:38.950
It it was built
00:35:38.960 --> 00:35:40.150
>> not to come down.
00:35:40.160 --> 00:35:41.430
>> Not to come down. I mean, you could have
00:35:41.440 --> 00:35:42.950
driven a truck through it and it still
00:35:42.960 --> 00:35:43.990
would have stayed.
00:35:44.000 --> 00:35:44.790
>> You're exactly right.
00:35:44.800 --> 00:35:46.710
>> And just the fact that the number the
00:35:46.720 --> 00:35:48.710
scores of people that were there,
00:35:48.720 --> 00:35:50.310
>> that told me that they cared about it.
00:35:50.320 --> 00:35:52.470
>> Oh, yeah. You know, who's going to leave
00:35:52.480 --> 00:35:55.910
work, you know, and blow your lunch just
00:35:55.920 --> 00:35:58.150
to go?
00:35:58.160 --> 00:35:58.950
So,
00:35:58.960 --> 00:36:01.030
>> well, and then were you up there when
00:36:01.040 --> 00:36:05.430
they um imploded the bleachery and towel
00:36:05.440 --> 00:36:08.069
distribution? Did you get pictures of
00:36:08.079 --> 00:36:09.670
video and pictures of that?
00:36:09.680 --> 00:36:11.829
>> Yep. That's how I knew not to choke the
00:36:11.839 --> 00:36:13.349
camera with
00:36:13.359 --> 00:36:15.190
>> Yeah. for the stacks,
00:36:15.200 --> 00:36:19.510
>> the the mayors and the
00:36:19.520 --> 00:36:22.150
>> um all the the folks that needed to be
00:36:22.160 --> 00:36:25.349
there were there and I was just lucky
00:36:25.359 --> 00:36:29.589
part of the media and um I remember I
00:36:29.599 --> 00:36:32.950
don't know being third floor maybe.
00:36:32.960 --> 00:36:36.230
Yeah. because I remember after it was
00:36:36.240 --> 00:36:40.230
all over um
00:36:40.240 --> 00:36:42.390
I think it was the um the elevator shaft
00:36:42.400 --> 00:36:45.030
or it had a condenser on top. It was
00:36:45.040 --> 00:36:47.109
still standing
00:36:47.119 --> 00:36:49.510
and then as it was, you know, pretty
00:36:49.520 --> 00:36:52.950
smoky or foggy dusty. I remember taking
00:36:52.960 --> 00:36:54.950
a picture of the water tank where you
00:36:54.960 --> 00:36:58.230
couldn't see the the legs and it looks
00:36:58.240 --> 00:36:59.670
like it's just it looks like it's
00:36:59.680 --> 00:37:00.950
floating.
00:37:00.960 --> 00:37:03.190
>> It's really cool. It's on It's in the
00:37:03.200 --> 00:37:04.790
album. Um,
00:37:04.800 --> 00:37:07.990
>> but I remember hearing
00:37:08.000 --> 00:37:10.630
>> a bulldozer make its way over and then
00:37:10.640 --> 00:37:13.750
the jaws just go
00:37:13.760 --> 00:37:15.990
>> and it fell right over.
00:37:16.000 --> 00:37:18.790
>> Yeah. So, how do [clears throat] people
00:37:18.800 --> 00:37:20.630
look at these pictures that we're that
00:37:20.640 --> 00:37:23.390
we've talked now for 30 minutes about?
00:37:23.400 --> 00:37:24.069
[laughter]
00:37:24.079 --> 00:37:25.910
>> How do they what's the best way for them
00:37:25.920 --> 00:37:27.750
to see it? and and if they want copies
00:37:27.760 --> 00:37:30.550
of them, do they u are they available
00:37:30.560 --> 00:37:32.470
for purchase and things like that?
00:37:32.480 --> 00:37:34.790
>> Yeah. Um the ones that are on my
00:37:34.800 --> 00:37:36.790
Facebook page, you know, of course
00:37:36.800 --> 00:37:39.190
>> Chad Mitchell photography or just Chad
00:37:39.200 --> 00:37:40.470
Mitchell
00:37:40.480 --> 00:37:41.910
>> Chad Mitchell photo, I think.
00:37:41.920 --> 00:37:42.550
>> Okay.
00:37:42.560 --> 00:37:47.030
>> Um but the album allows for a little
00:37:47.040 --> 00:37:50.470
captions, you know, as opposed to um
00:37:50.480 --> 00:37:52.630
Instagram. I'm not on anything else, but
00:37:52.640 --> 00:37:57.349
um Chad W. Mitchell.
00:37:57.359 --> 00:37:59.030
I got to I don't even know my own
00:37:59.040 --> 00:38:01.109
website. I don't go there much, but um
00:38:01.119 --> 00:38:01.829
>> we'll find it.
00:38:01.839 --> 00:38:05.270
>> Yeah. But there, if you go there, you
00:38:05.280 --> 00:38:08.390
can look up those same images and order
00:38:08.400 --> 00:38:09.910
whatever
00:38:09.920 --> 00:38:11.829
>> suits you best off the website.
00:38:11.839 --> 00:38:15.030
>> Yeah. Yeah. Um so those are there. Um
00:38:15.040 --> 00:38:18.310
doesn't get promoted a whole lot, but um
00:38:18.320 --> 00:38:20.230
but anyway, they're they're on there.
00:38:20.240 --> 00:38:23.829
They're available on there. Um, it's I
00:38:23.839 --> 00:38:26.150
don't know this. I'll show you this. Can
00:38:26.160 --> 00:38:26.790
I do that now?
00:38:26.800 --> 00:38:27.030
>> Yeah,
00:38:27.040 --> 00:38:28.310
>> sure.
00:38:28.320 --> 00:38:31.750
>> This is a piece of uh
00:38:31.760 --> 00:38:35.349
and it usually says Oh, and it does. Um,
00:38:35.359 --> 00:38:39.030
from forest to floor on the back, but
00:38:39.040 --> 00:38:41.670
that's the kil dried maple the lacquer
00:38:41.680 --> 00:38:43.109
on it. And that's what the frames are
00:38:43.119 --> 00:38:44.230
made out of that I
00:38:44.240 --> 00:38:45.670
>> I was wondering if you had noticed
00:38:45.680 --> 00:38:49.109
what's on the front of this table.
00:38:49.119 --> 00:38:51.190
You're going to test me on the
00:38:51.200 --> 00:38:52.230
>> very top edge
00:38:52.240 --> 00:38:53.510
>> right here in front of us.
00:38:53.520 --> 00:38:55.910
>> Oh, the angle iron
00:38:55.920 --> 00:38:57.109
the
00:38:57.119 --> 00:39:02.390
>> the same thing at the very top.
00:39:02.400 --> 00:39:04.150
>> Oh, yeah. The the yellow metal.
00:39:04.160 --> 00:39:06.150
>> Yep. Now, that's yellow maple. That's
00:39:06.160 --> 00:39:07.990
what you gave me long time ago.
00:39:08.000 --> 00:39:09.670
>> Oh, it looks like the way to make a
00:39:09.680 --> 00:39:10.550
frame of it.
00:39:10.560 --> 00:39:11.270
>> How about that?
00:39:11.280 --> 00:39:13.510
>> And I never made a frame from it. So, I
00:39:13.520 --> 00:39:14.710
turned it into this where everybody
00:39:14.720 --> 00:39:16.069
would see it every time they sat down.
00:39:16.079 --> 00:39:17.510
Well, you did good. Not cracking it,
00:39:17.520 --> 00:39:18.950
getting those things those screws in
00:39:18.960 --> 00:39:20.150
there. Yeah, cuz that's
00:39:20.160 --> 00:39:21.670
>> it's it's tough.
00:39:21.680 --> 00:39:24.390
>> Killing dried means I don't know how far
00:39:24.400 --> 00:39:25.910
Babe Ruth could have hit a home run with
00:39:25.920 --> 00:39:27.430
this thing, but
00:39:27.440 --> 00:39:27.829
>> wow.
00:39:27.839 --> 00:39:29.190
>> It was solid.
00:39:29.200 --> 00:39:30.630
>> Well, well, that's a good segue. You
00:39:30.640 --> 00:39:32.390
know, you mentioned Babe Ruth and and
00:39:32.400 --> 00:39:34.069
shift some gears. You've got some
00:39:34.079 --> 00:39:36.230
pictures, some paintings behind you that
00:39:36.240 --> 00:39:37.670
you've done. Uh we've talked a little
00:39:37.680 --> 00:39:39.270
bit before we started recording with
00:39:39.280 --> 00:39:40.870
your your NASCAR connections and
00:39:40.880 --> 00:39:42.470
obviously your baseball connections. So,
00:39:42.480 --> 00:39:44.470
so what else can we get into?
00:39:44.480 --> 00:39:46.310
>> Well, let's see. Um, I appreciate you
00:39:46.320 --> 00:39:47.589
talking to me about the meal. I could
00:39:47.599 --> 00:39:48.710
talk all day about that.
00:39:48.720 --> 00:39:49.670
>> As could we
00:39:49.680 --> 00:39:52.950
>> Let's uh let's stay with baseball. Um,
00:39:52.960 --> 00:39:55.430
we'll go with
00:39:55.440 --> 00:39:59.750
I was a team photographer for the
00:39:59.760 --> 00:40:02.069
Piedmont Phillies
00:40:02.079 --> 00:40:04.069
in 95.
00:40:04.079 --> 00:40:09.670
Pedmont U uh B Weevils after that until
00:40:09.680 --> 00:40:12.390
you know uh Dale and Brutin came in ' 01
00:40:12.400 --> 00:40:15.109
and then I was there for until ' 07. But
00:40:15.119 --> 00:40:18.630
this has Jeffrey Key number 34
00:40:18.640 --> 00:40:20.550
autograph. It was the very first home
00:40:20.560 --> 00:40:23.349
run out Moose Road.
00:40:23.359 --> 00:40:23.910
>> Chris.
00:40:23.920 --> 00:40:25.910
>> And I'm going to tell you what, Jeff, if
00:40:25.920 --> 00:40:28.069
you get to hear this, brother, I know
00:40:28.079 --> 00:40:30.630
you hit that thing a ton cuz it hit the
00:40:30.640 --> 00:40:32.230
top of the locker room.
00:40:32.240 --> 00:40:33.910
>> Wow. [laughter]
00:40:33.920 --> 00:40:37.109
>> When he when he said send it, he did.
00:40:37.119 --> 00:40:37.510
>> Um,
00:40:37.520 --> 00:40:39.190
>> was that what game was that? Was that
00:40:39.200 --> 00:40:41.030
the first game
00:40:41.040 --> 00:40:45.109
>> that was that? I don't know. I I believe
00:40:45.119 --> 00:40:46.870
now I don't know. I'm not going to
00:40:46.880 --> 00:40:48.550
venture to say. I'd have to look it up,
00:40:48.560 --> 00:40:51.589
but um but no, he signed it and I
00:40:51.599 --> 00:40:53.190
remember
00:40:53.200 --> 00:40:56.230
running from the media pit on the home
00:40:56.240 --> 00:40:59.430
side all the way through the stands
00:40:59.440 --> 00:41:02.710
waiting between the whatever out and
00:41:02.720 --> 00:41:05.910
then shot through the visitors bullpin
00:41:05.920 --> 00:41:07.829
and it was just still there. I'm like,
00:41:07.839 --> 00:41:08.950
>> nobody had picked.
00:41:08.960 --> 00:41:10.470
>> They didn't know. They didn't know yet
00:41:10.480 --> 00:41:12.950
that they could run and go get them.
00:41:12.960 --> 00:41:13.910
>> Wow, that's cool.
00:41:13.920 --> 00:41:16.630
>> So, I just abused my privilege, if you
00:41:16.640 --> 00:41:18.790
want to call it that, and uh and went
00:41:18.800 --> 00:41:19.349
and got it.
00:41:19.359 --> 00:41:20.870
>> Took advantage of an opportunity.
00:41:20.880 --> 00:41:23.778
>> Exactly. That's that's that's it. This
00:41:23.788 --> 00:41:25.589
[snorts] one
00:41:25.599 --> 00:41:29.589
uh has Rob Burgerer and uh Todd Coburn,
00:41:29.599 --> 00:41:32.630
uh our pitcher and catcher combination
00:41:32.640 --> 00:41:35.589
who threw the first no hitter.
00:41:35.599 --> 00:41:37.430
And I had this hand painted. I didn't do
00:41:37.440 --> 00:41:39.750
that. But Peont Bowl Wevils first no
00:41:39.760 --> 00:41:42.230
hitter, April 30th, 1996.
00:41:42.240 --> 00:41:42.950
>> Oh.
00:41:42.960 --> 00:41:46.069
>> So, um,
00:41:46.079 --> 00:41:49.109
uh, let's see. This, we'll stay with
00:41:49.119 --> 00:41:51.030
baseball.
00:41:51.040 --> 00:41:53.829
Uh, is this in the shot?
00:41:53.839 --> 00:41:54.470
>> Yes.
00:41:54.480 --> 00:41:57.589
>> Okay. This was just a, um, just a card
00:41:57.599 --> 00:42:02.309
pre-cut of, um, our trading cards, um,
00:42:02.319 --> 00:42:05.430
out of 2006.
00:42:05.440 --> 00:42:08.630
The cool thing about it to me is that
00:42:08.640 --> 00:42:11.430
they let me
00:42:11.440 --> 00:42:14.230
totally control the images. And the cool
00:42:14.240 --> 00:42:15.670
thing about it, and I've never seen
00:42:15.680 --> 00:42:18.790
another set like it, it's CPoned in the
00:42:18.800 --> 00:42:20.309
background.
00:42:20.319 --> 00:42:22.790
>> I wanted to tell our like a history cuz
00:42:22.800 --> 00:42:26.390
we'd had baseball here before, but you
00:42:26.400 --> 00:42:28.069
can see some throwback uniforms in
00:42:28.079 --> 00:42:30.870
there. You know, I I I remember talking
00:42:30.880 --> 00:42:34.230
uh Raphael Flores into into that like
00:42:34.240 --> 00:42:35.589
got to put the throwback uniform in
00:42:35.599 --> 00:42:36.630
there, man. You're going to be one of
00:42:36.640 --> 00:42:38.150
the only people the throwback. He goes,
00:42:38.160 --> 00:42:41.990
"Okay, let's do it." So, we we did it.
00:42:42.000 --> 00:42:44.630
But, um yeah, this is the set that
00:42:44.640 --> 00:42:48.230
wasn't um wasn't signed. But, yeah, I
00:42:48.240 --> 00:42:49.910
got to sit with the players in the
00:42:49.920 --> 00:42:52.790
locker room and go through and I picked
00:42:52.800 --> 00:42:56.550
out the best three. And I'm like, you
00:42:56.560 --> 00:42:58.630
can pick any one of these. They don't
00:42:58.640 --> 00:43:00.870
get to choose their cards, but they got
00:43:00.880 --> 00:43:02.390
to do it in Canapapolis.
00:43:02.400 --> 00:43:04.870
>> So, I thought that was I'm an 80s kid,
00:43:04.880 --> 00:43:07.030
so everything's cool. But I thought that
00:43:07.040 --> 00:43:10.630
was cool. But, um, yeah. So, I've got
00:43:10.640 --> 00:43:12.710
Ricky Williams,
00:43:12.720 --> 00:43:14.230
Heisman Trophy winner.
00:43:14.240 --> 00:43:15.829
>> Couldn't hit a curveball, though.
00:43:15.839 --> 00:43:17.430
>> No, he couldn't. [laughter] But he
00:43:17.440 --> 00:43:18.470
>> he hit everything else.
00:43:18.480 --> 00:43:19.990
>> He could throw a frozen rope, though.
00:43:20.000 --> 00:43:20.710
>> Yes, he could.
00:43:20.720 --> 00:43:22.390
>> Don't try him. Don't try him from third.
00:43:22.400 --> 00:43:23.750
>> Bruce was What year did you work out
00:43:23.760 --> 00:43:23.910
there?
00:43:23.920 --> 00:43:30.309
>> I worked out there. Working at house and
00:43:30.319 --> 00:43:31.430
remember you out there. In fact, I think
00:43:31.440 --> 00:43:32.230
I got
00:43:32.240 --> 00:43:33.430
>> I had my hat on backwards.
00:43:33.440 --> 00:43:35.109
>> I can't take any pictures of you washing
00:43:35.119 --> 00:43:36.550
clothes. [laughter]
00:43:36.560 --> 00:43:37.990
>> I'm pretty sure I got some pictures in
00:43:38.000 --> 00:43:39.510
my phone that you took.
00:43:39.520 --> 00:43:39.990
>> Okay.
00:43:40.000 --> 00:43:41.349
>> I'll have to see if I can dig them out
00:43:41.359 --> 00:43:42.870
and show them to you.
00:43:42.880 --> 00:43:44.150
>> And then you got one.
00:43:44.160 --> 00:43:45.829
>> I was much younger back then. So,
00:43:45.839 --> 00:43:47.349
>> then you brought another sports piece
00:43:47.359 --> 00:43:49.910
that's very near and dear to us here.
00:43:49.920 --> 00:43:51.430
>> Oh, yeah.
00:43:51.440 --> 00:43:55.990
>> Well, this uh this was my guy as far as
00:43:56.000 --> 00:43:59.750
anybody's concerned. It still is. But um
00:43:59.760 --> 00:44:03.430
these were pictures um that I had taken
00:44:03.440 --> 00:44:05.910
except for this one. So I had taken all
00:44:05.920 --> 00:44:09.750
these and um and just drew from them and
00:44:09.760 --> 00:44:12.790
did a marker color pencil uh mixed media
00:44:12.800 --> 00:44:16.390
piece celebrating his Oh gosh, that
00:44:16.400 --> 00:44:17.829
should be seven. One, two, three, seven.
00:44:17.839 --> 00:44:19.589
Yeah. Four, five, six, seven. Yeah. Did
00:44:19.599 --> 00:44:22.150
it in 96.
00:44:22.160 --> 00:44:25.750
So, and the cool gr is the fact that he
00:44:25.760 --> 00:44:29.270
signed it. Um, I know I'd mentioned
00:44:29.280 --> 00:44:29.990
that, but
00:44:30.000 --> 00:44:30.550
>> and
00:44:30.560 --> 00:44:33.030
>> there was like 76 total production hours
00:44:33.040 --> 00:44:34.550
in it. And
00:44:34.560 --> 00:44:37.349
>> and and that's kind of a neat tiein,
00:44:37.359 --> 00:44:40.470
too, because he had 76 total wins of his
00:44:40.480 --> 00:44:41.109
career.
00:44:41.119 --> 00:44:41.589
>> Yeah.
00:44:41.599 --> 00:44:43.750
>> That's how many hours you spent drawing
00:44:43.760 --> 00:44:44.150
that.
00:44:44.160 --> 00:44:44.950
>> Never thought about that.
00:44:44.960 --> 00:44:45.829
>> Wow.
00:44:45.839 --> 00:44:47.670
>> Never thought about that. So, I think
00:44:47.680 --> 00:44:47.990
you had
00:44:48.000 --> 00:44:49.430
>> sometimes those coincidences
00:44:49.440 --> 00:44:51.190
coincidences just happen. There was
00:44:51.200 --> 00:44:53.190
something on there. It said 51. If I
00:44:53.200 --> 00:44:56.710
remember on the back of it had 51
00:44:56.720 --> 00:45:00.470
something when I saw
00:45:00.480 --> 00:45:03.670
>> 51 and a half total hours uh with color
00:45:03.680 --> 00:45:05.349
>> and he was born in 51.
00:45:05.359 --> 00:45:08.069
>> Yep. Yep.
00:45:08.079 --> 00:45:08.710
Yep.
00:45:08.720 --> 00:45:09.030
>> Wow.
00:45:09.040 --> 00:45:10.950
>> I always look for those crazy little
00:45:10.960 --> 00:45:14.470
connections. But I remember
00:45:14.480 --> 00:45:19.910
he he said when he signed it, he said,
00:45:19.920 --> 00:45:21.270
I'm pretending I got a big busty
00:45:21.280 --> 00:45:26.230
mustache. Um, who did this? Like, I did
00:45:26.240 --> 00:45:28.150
cuz [laughter]
00:45:28.160 --> 00:45:30.309
they went,
00:45:30.319 --> 00:45:33.670
that was it. That was it. So,
00:45:33.680 --> 00:45:34.069
>> well,
00:45:34.079 --> 00:45:37.190
>> I took that as a major uh award.
00:45:37.200 --> 00:45:37.750
>> Yeah.
00:45:37.760 --> 00:45:39.750
>> And
00:45:39.760 --> 00:45:41.196
here it is. But you had so
00:45:41.206 --> 00:45:42.710
[clears throat] much going on. Like in
00:45:42.720 --> 00:45:45.829
96 you were doing the baseball stadium.
00:45:45.839 --> 00:45:47.670
You were doing racing.
00:45:47.680 --> 00:45:48.150
>> Y
00:45:48.160 --> 00:45:50.790
>> and it's just it was just one event
00:45:50.800 --> 00:45:51.510
after another.
00:45:51.520 --> 00:45:54.470
>> Yeah. Dad dad told me a long time. It's
00:45:54.480 --> 00:45:56.150
got to be him being a Marine, I guess.
00:45:56.160 --> 00:46:00.470
But he said, "Stay busy, boy, cuz uh you
00:46:00.480 --> 00:46:03.349
won't make it in prison." [laughter]
00:46:03.359 --> 00:46:06.150
>> I said, "Yes, sir. Absolutely. Simple.
00:46:06.160 --> 00:46:06.790
Let's roll."
00:46:06.800 --> 00:46:08.230
>> And then what about the sign? And it
00:46:08.240 --> 00:46:10.630
goes goes back to the mill. Um
00:46:10.640 --> 00:46:12.309
>> Oh, can you see it on the front?
00:46:12.319 --> 00:46:16.390
>> We can't see it from Let me let me talk.
00:46:16.400 --> 00:46:19.430
>> Yeah, that's the um the the first place
00:46:19.440 --> 00:46:22.150
when I went into the mill and of um
00:46:22.160 --> 00:46:25.510
gosh, I'm going forget what year. Um was
00:46:25.520 --> 00:46:28.390
um the carpenter shop just for the fact
00:46:28.400 --> 00:46:31.270
that dad, you know, and he gave me work
00:46:31.280 --> 00:46:34.390
and but then right across from that was
00:46:34.400 --> 00:46:36.230
a sign shop. I'm like, well, this is
00:46:36.240 --> 00:46:37.670
easy. Cool.
00:46:37.680 --> 00:46:39.910
>> So, I remember going in there and just I
00:46:39.920 --> 00:46:41.349
mean literally drilling, looking at all
00:46:41.359 --> 00:46:43.829
the paint supplies, looking at the um
00:46:43.839 --> 00:46:45.670
and please y'all go look at the pictures
00:46:45.680 --> 00:46:48.150
because it'll it'll help bolster me and
00:46:48.160 --> 00:46:52.309
my stories, but um the floor, if you
00:46:52.319 --> 00:46:54.710
know who Jackson Pollock was, it's me
00:46:54.720 --> 00:46:57.750
studying art in school. He was the one
00:46:57.760 --> 00:47:00.309
that would just drizzle artwork on the
00:47:00.319 --> 00:47:02.309
canvas and throw it on there and just
00:47:02.319 --> 00:47:04.710
drips and all that stuff. Jackson
00:47:04.720 --> 00:47:06.470
Pollock.
00:47:06.480 --> 00:47:08.550
He did really good at it. But that's
00:47:08.560 --> 00:47:11.510
what the floor looked like with this
00:47:11.520 --> 00:47:13.589
under it. And you could [clears throat]
00:47:13.599 --> 00:47:15.829
pick out the I don't know the mill
00:47:15.839 --> 00:47:20.230
green. It was like a avocado green. Um
00:47:20.240 --> 00:47:22.550
uh you know, black and gray and a lot of
00:47:22.560 --> 00:47:26.550
white. But um but yeah, but this was um
00:47:26.560 --> 00:47:28.069
in
00:47:28.079 --> 00:47:30.950
open-end spin room where I got the floor
00:47:30.960 --> 00:47:33.430
where I reclaimed the flooring
00:47:33.440 --> 00:47:36.710
and to me it's a d now it's a double
00:47:36.720 --> 00:47:39.430
entandra. All right. Well, what is that,
00:47:39.440 --> 00:47:42.150
Chad? Um while the mill is up and
00:47:42.160 --> 00:47:45.510
running, we're number one, brother.
00:47:45.520 --> 00:47:49.750
>> We ruled Ruth in what we did.
00:47:49.760 --> 00:47:52.870
>> Now I'm standing there by myself.
00:47:52.880 --> 00:47:56.630
reading it.
00:47:56.640 --> 00:47:58.069
>> Job security.
00:47:58.079 --> 00:48:01.670
>> Yeah. So, but I told myself I had to
00:48:01.680 --> 00:48:04.390
have it. The only thing I didn't have in
00:48:04.400 --> 00:48:07.270
my pack was a hammer. That's why they're
00:48:07.280 --> 00:48:10.470
tore out. But that that uh
00:48:10.480 --> 00:48:11.910
>> So, now you carry a hammer everywhere
00:48:11.920 --> 00:48:13.589
you go.
00:48:13.599 --> 00:48:15.123
>> There might be one in the car.
00:48:15.133 --> 00:48:16.230
[laughter]
00:48:16.240 --> 00:48:17.750
>> So, in there in the in the bathroom,
00:48:17.760 --> 00:48:19.829
there's a sign that was painted up
00:48:19.839 --> 00:48:22.328
there. It says, "Please flush commode."
00:48:22.338 --> 00:48:23.349
[laughter]
00:48:23.359 --> 00:48:25.430
Um, and and there's some over here. It
00:48:25.440 --> 00:48:28.470
says out of gas. Go to pump number two,
00:48:28.480 --> 00:48:31.910
three, four, or pump three, pump two.
00:48:31.920 --> 00:48:35.510
But, uh, so that sign shop, uh, people
00:48:35.520 --> 00:48:37.910
like Mike McFalls, Russ Hall,
00:48:37.920 --> 00:48:38.870
>> I used to work for him.
00:48:38.880 --> 00:48:39.670
>> Ballard,
00:48:39.680 --> 00:48:40.790
>> who used to work with him.
00:48:40.800 --> 00:48:44.069
>> Leroy Dwiggins. I mean, all those guys,
00:48:44.079 --> 00:48:47.990
they they're the ones at Roland Daves.
00:48:48.000 --> 00:48:51.109
Roland Daves is the was the
00:48:51.119 --> 00:48:53.990
overseer of the the paint department
00:48:54.000 --> 00:48:57.270
>> and I actually have his foreman jacket
00:48:57.280 --> 00:48:59.510
that says Canon Mills paint department
00:48:59.520 --> 00:49:01.430
on the back and it's multicolor and it's
00:49:01.440 --> 00:49:02.870
got his initials on the front. I should
00:49:02.880 --> 00:49:05.430
have brought it out here today since we
00:49:05.440 --> 00:49:08.230
were talking about this. But um you know
00:49:08.240 --> 00:49:10.549
those guys were pretty much self-taught
00:49:10.559 --> 00:49:12.870
by the other guys in there. Yeah.
00:49:12.880 --> 00:49:15.589
>> That could paint. And Russ Hall was who
00:49:15.599 --> 00:49:17.510
lettered the pink car for us when we
00:49:17.520 --> 00:49:19.109
when we built the car.
00:49:19.119 --> 00:49:20.950
>> And he used to do a lot of Dale's
00:49:20.960 --> 00:49:23.109
haulers back in the day, hand lettering
00:49:23.119 --> 00:49:25.030
those haulers and all that stuff.
00:49:25.040 --> 00:49:28.230
>> And but if Russ watches this episode, he
00:49:28.240 --> 00:49:29.670
could probably tell us exactly who
00:49:29.680 --> 00:49:31.910
painted that sign because because each
00:49:31.920 --> 00:49:35.670
of them had their own style and and he's
00:49:35.680 --> 00:49:37.349
looked at a lot of the stuff that we've
00:49:37.359 --> 00:49:39.030
had and he'll say, "Well, you know,
00:49:39.040 --> 00:49:41.109
Leroy did that one or Balor did that
00:49:41.119 --> 00:49:43.190
one." And I mean, he he'll know. So
00:49:43.200 --> 00:49:45.589
hopefully he'll watch the show and um
00:49:45.599 --> 00:49:46.710
and be able to tell us.
00:49:46.720 --> 00:49:49.190
>> I want to say hello. I used to work for
00:49:49.200 --> 00:49:51.349
Mike right up the street here.
00:49:51.359 --> 00:49:51.829
>> Mhm.
00:49:51.839 --> 00:49:54.309
>> Um I was his artist. Uh
00:49:54.319 --> 00:49:56.630
>> Russ used to work Russ was his partner.
00:49:56.640 --> 00:49:56.950
>> Yeah.
00:49:56.960 --> 00:49:57.589
>> Yeah. Well,
00:49:57.599 --> 00:49:59.190
>> McFall and Hall
00:49:59.200 --> 00:50:01.750
>> going to the sign business. Um I worked
00:50:01.760 --> 00:50:05.030
with him um uh at a sign company in
00:50:05.040 --> 00:50:06.390
Concord.
00:50:06.400 --> 00:50:08.710
>> So I I remember his personality. I liked
00:50:08.720 --> 00:50:10.710
his personality. Easygoing, laid-back
00:50:10.720 --> 00:50:11.190
guy.
00:50:11.200 --> 00:50:13.270
>> Yeah. Um, Mike too.
00:50:13.280 --> 00:50:16.470
>> Yeah, Russ was Russ was a great guy and
00:50:16.480 --> 00:50:20.870
um he's uh very talented. Incredibly
00:50:20.880 --> 00:50:23.510
talented and Mike Yeah, Mike is too.
00:50:23.520 --> 00:50:26.950
>> Um but yeah, I I'll have to um this
00:50:26.960 --> 00:50:28.710
episode post I'll send it to Russ and
00:50:28.720 --> 00:50:30.230
then it'll be cool to be able to add to
00:50:30.240 --> 00:50:30.630
the thing.
00:50:30.640 --> 00:50:31.589
>> Absolutely. [laughter]
00:50:31.599 --> 00:50:32.950
>> Maybe that could be a trivia question.
00:50:32.960 --> 00:50:33.990
>> Yeah, there we go.
00:50:34.000 --> 00:50:35.510
>> We hadn't done one of those in a while.
00:50:35.520 --> 00:50:38.630
>> What's up, Russ? So, anything else you
00:50:38.640 --> 00:50:41.910
would like to share with with our crazy
00:50:41.920 --> 00:50:43.109
bunch here?
00:50:43.119 --> 00:50:45.030
>> Oh, just
00:50:45.040 --> 00:50:46.630
Oh, let's see.
00:50:46.640 --> 00:50:48.630
>> David, you got anything back there for
00:50:48.640 --> 00:50:50.309
uh Chad?
00:50:50.319 --> 00:50:52.069
>> Not that I can think of. You know, I
00:50:52.079 --> 00:50:54.390
just I appreciate you coming in sharing
00:50:54.400 --> 00:50:57.270
stories. you know, sir, much like uh
00:50:57.280 --> 00:50:58.950
Ryan and Chris and Chuck have said, you
00:50:58.960 --> 00:50:59.750
know,
00:50:59.760 --> 00:51:03.030
>> I I've seen your work several places.
00:51:03.040 --> 00:51:05.910
You know, one thing I I would like to
00:51:05.920 --> 00:51:07.750
say is
00:51:07.760 --> 00:51:09.670
the work that you do, you you did a
00:51:09.680 --> 00:51:11.990
great job capturing
00:51:12.000 --> 00:51:15.109
those moments. And even though it's
00:51:15.119 --> 00:51:16.870
still photography, you can see the
00:51:16.880 --> 00:51:19.270
action of what's happening in that
00:51:19.280 --> 00:51:21.829
moment. And you know, for anybody that
00:51:21.839 --> 00:51:24.870
you know is from this area, it it
00:51:24.880 --> 00:51:27.349
definitely evokes those those memories
00:51:27.359 --> 00:51:29.750
and feelings of of the history of the
00:51:29.760 --> 00:51:30.470
city.
00:51:30.480 --> 00:51:32.549
>> Well, I appreciate that. That that sets
00:51:32.559 --> 00:51:35.670
out what I want to do. And um you know,
00:51:35.680 --> 00:51:39.030
they always told us and Sam Roberts and
00:51:39.040 --> 00:51:41.750
Marty Price and David Foster and all
00:51:41.760 --> 00:51:44.150
those guys I grew up with in baseball
00:51:44.160 --> 00:51:46.390
that were at the stadium. Um I learned a
00:51:46.400 --> 00:51:48.950
lot from them, so thanks to them. But
00:51:48.960 --> 00:51:51.190
they would kind of teach me, you know,
00:51:51.200 --> 00:51:53.349
and pass sort of in passing and in
00:51:53.359 --> 00:51:55.430
conversation. It's just, you know, tell
00:51:55.440 --> 00:51:56.470
a story,
00:51:56.480 --> 00:51:59.270
>> tell as much as you possibly can in one
00:51:59.280 --> 00:52:00.630
shutter click. Yep. Wow.
00:52:00.640 --> 00:52:01.270
>> So,
00:52:01.280 --> 00:52:04.069
>> well, and you know, I think thank you is
00:52:04.079 --> 00:52:07.109
the from the far as the community goes,
00:52:07.119 --> 00:52:09.109
thank you for what you were able to do
00:52:09.119 --> 00:52:11.190
and take initiative to go do it
00:52:11.200 --> 00:52:13.030
>> because if you hadn't did it, I mean, I
00:52:13.040 --> 00:52:16.069
I've got a lot of amateur pictures of
00:52:16.079 --> 00:52:18.630
outside and, you know, stuff like
00:52:18.640 --> 00:52:19.829
everybody does,
00:52:19.839 --> 00:52:22.470
>> but not not have the initiative,
00:52:22.480 --> 00:52:23.589
>> I didn't see anybody,
00:52:23.599 --> 00:52:25.750
>> haul some Hardies biscuits in there and
00:52:25.760 --> 00:52:27.030
and, [laughter] you know,
00:52:27.040 --> 00:52:30.470
>> barge in. You know, that story is very
00:52:30.480 --> 00:52:32.309
reminiscent to our good friend who was
00:52:32.319 --> 00:52:34.950
also on the show, Brett Offenberger, how
00:52:34.960 --> 00:52:37.190
Brent how he just kind of drove right
00:52:37.200 --> 00:52:38.630
in. He had a work truck and they just
00:52:38.640 --> 00:52:39.829
thought he's supposed to be there, so he
00:52:39.839 --> 00:52:41.030
just drove right on in.
00:52:41.040 --> 00:52:43.430
>> Well, I'll never forget Danny Nhard
00:52:43.440 --> 00:52:45.349
telling me one time at Charlotte or it
00:52:45.359 --> 00:52:47.270
might have been it was Rockingham. He
00:52:47.280 --> 00:52:49.750
said, "Well, just follow us in." He
00:52:49.760 --> 00:52:51.190
said, "Put your hand on the car." He
00:52:51.200 --> 00:52:56.309
goes, "Go until you hear no." I went
00:52:56.319 --> 00:52:58.230
>> kind of like carrying a clipboard and
00:52:58.240 --> 00:53:00.309
having on a pair of safety glasses. You
00:53:00.319 --> 00:53:02.671
can get anybody like you belong.
00:53:02.681 --> 00:53:03.670
[laughter]
00:53:03.680 --> 00:53:04.950
>> Yep.
00:53:05.440 --> 00:53:06.630
>> Look the part, be the part.
00:53:06.640 --> 00:53:07.589
>> Yep. There you go.
00:53:07.599 --> 00:53:08.870
>> That's kind of how I carry it now.
00:53:08.880 --> 00:53:10.549
>> Same. You got anything else?
00:53:10.559 --> 00:53:14.390
>> No, I'm just uh like I said, I have just
00:53:14.400 --> 00:53:17.829
been thrilled to see all of his what
00:53:17.839 --> 00:53:20.230
he's documented over the years. The only
00:53:20.240 --> 00:53:22.710
question I had was by the time you got
00:53:22.720 --> 00:53:27.589
in there with um u the demolition crew,
00:53:27.599 --> 00:53:31.910
had everything basically been taken,
00:53:31.920 --> 00:53:34.870
there was nothing but the wall standing
00:53:34.880 --> 00:53:37.829
uh like the signs and stuff or was any
00:53:37.839 --> 00:53:39.990
of that stuff still available at that
00:53:40.000 --> 00:53:40.710
point or
00:53:40.720 --> 00:53:41.910
>> Yeah. Um
00:53:41.920 --> 00:53:43.030
>> but it just went down.
00:53:43.040 --> 00:53:44.549
>> This gives me chills talking about this.
00:53:44.559 --> 00:53:47.349
Um when I got in there, I got in there
00:53:47.359 --> 00:53:52.950
early and um
00:53:52.960 --> 00:53:54.870
whenever All right. I was able to take
00:53:54.880 --> 00:53:56.630
You'll see pictures. Just please go look
00:53:56.640 --> 00:53:59.910
at them. Um I was able to get in a
00:53:59.920 --> 00:54:02.069
balloon at Cotton Stock or
00:54:02.079 --> 00:54:04.069
>> I remember that was I remember that too.
00:54:04.079 --> 00:54:05.670
>> And I didn't plan it. I didn't call
00:54:05.680 --> 00:54:07.430
ahead. I didn't email. I don't know if I
00:54:07.440 --> 00:54:10.549
could email them, but um so I'm
00:54:10.559 --> 00:54:13.109
literally I'm stroking like a madman
00:54:13.119 --> 00:54:16.150
with cameras towards that balloon and
00:54:16.160 --> 00:54:17.829
the only person I think that stood my
00:54:17.839 --> 00:54:20.309
way was Phyllis Beaver. [laughter]
00:54:20.319 --> 00:54:23.190
And I'm like, "Okay." I said, "Phyllis,
00:54:23.200 --> 00:54:25.270
I'm going up." And I looked at the they
00:54:25.280 --> 00:54:27.270
call them balloon pilots, I guess. And I
00:54:27.280 --> 00:54:28.710
said, "You got room for one more?" I
00:54:28.720 --> 00:54:30.950
say, she goes, "Come on." I go, "Let's
00:54:30.960 --> 00:54:33.589
go." And she held my cameras. I jumped
00:54:33.599 --> 00:54:36.549
in. I took the balloon ride of a
00:54:36.559 --> 00:54:37.190
lifetime.
00:54:37.200 --> 00:54:38.230
>> I remember that day.
00:54:38.240 --> 00:54:39.030
>> I forgot about it.
00:54:39.040 --> 00:54:42.230
>> And just the fact that I got over the
00:54:42.240 --> 00:54:44.710
stacks without going directly over them,
00:54:44.720 --> 00:54:47.430
that allowed me to get that that photo
00:54:47.440 --> 00:54:50.790
um photos. And the coolest thing when I
00:54:50.800 --> 00:54:53.430
changed and went to wide, I couldn't
00:54:53.440 --> 00:54:54.950
have planned it, but here comes the
00:54:54.960 --> 00:54:55.990
train.
00:54:56.000 --> 00:54:56.950
>> Wow. [laughter]
00:54:56.960 --> 00:54:59.510
>> I got the train down, too. Yeah.
00:54:59.520 --> 00:55:01.990
>> So, y'all do me a favor. I want to do
00:55:02.000 --> 00:55:04.309
this. Um, I got to kind of mix it up in
00:55:04.319 --> 00:55:07.510
here a little bit. Go to the website,
00:55:07.520 --> 00:55:10.470
pick out one image. I will get you a
00:55:10.480 --> 00:55:11.109
poster.
00:55:11.119 --> 00:55:11.829
>> Oh, man.
00:55:11.839 --> 00:55:13.109
>> To put in here somewhere.
00:55:13.119 --> 00:55:13.829
>> That'd be awesome.
00:55:13.839 --> 00:55:15.829
>> We will proudly display it and thank you
00:55:15.839 --> 00:55:16.549
for that, Chad.
00:55:16.559 --> 00:55:19.510
>> And um, but but there's a picture on
00:55:19.520 --> 00:55:22.069
here um, and I've seen it before and I
00:55:22.079 --> 00:55:24.150
forgot that it was one that you had
00:55:24.160 --> 00:55:26.470
taken. I've always liked it. I'm not
00:55:26.480 --> 00:55:27.990
saying this is the one I would want in
00:55:28.000 --> 00:55:30.710
here, but it just speaks
00:55:30.720 --> 00:55:31.910
>> Oh, wow. Oh,
00:55:31.920 --> 00:55:33.190
>> I know. I can haul away.
00:55:33.200 --> 00:55:35.750
>> I mean, those connector because I
00:55:35.760 --> 00:55:37.589
remember the connectors between the
00:55:37.599 --> 00:55:39.829
buildings were always that's where that
00:55:39.839 --> 00:55:40.309
was hanging.
00:55:40.319 --> 00:55:41.670
>> Oh, really? How about that? I saw the
00:55:41.680 --> 00:55:43.670
picture of it. Um, and there's a picture
00:55:43.680 --> 00:55:45.589
of that sign in here. Yeah, right there
00:55:45.599 --> 00:55:47.589
it is.
00:55:47.599 --> 00:55:48.069
>> And
00:55:48.079 --> 00:55:48.950
>> that is that sign.
00:55:48.960 --> 00:55:50.710
>> I can I can put myself back in the mail
00:55:50.720 --> 00:55:51.910
right now looking at those pictures.
00:55:51.920 --> 00:55:56.150
Just Yeah. Same same. Absolutely.
00:55:56.160 --> 00:55:57.270
>> Um, this has been great.
00:55:57.280 --> 00:55:58.309
>> Really great pictures.
00:55:58.319 --> 00:56:01.670
>> No. So, it is chadwmitchell.com
00:56:01.680 --> 00:56:03.349
is is what the website is.
00:56:03.359 --> 00:56:05.109
>> Hey, thanks for telling me. [laughter]
00:56:05.119 --> 00:56:06.630
>> Anything else you need to know? Is it,
00:56:06.640 --> 00:56:08.870
you know,
00:56:08.880 --> 00:56:10.549
>> it's still up and running.
00:56:10.559 --> 00:56:11.829
>> Pay my bill. Yeah.
00:56:11.839 --> 00:56:13.750
>> A lot of great pictures. I think if I
00:56:13.760 --> 00:56:15.190
remember right, and I haven't seen it
00:56:15.200 --> 00:56:16.870
yet, but isn't there a picture of your
00:56:16.880 --> 00:56:17.990
dad in there?
00:56:18.000 --> 00:56:18.309
>> Yes.
00:56:18.319 --> 00:56:19.910
>> Um somewhere.
00:56:19.920 --> 00:56:21.910
>> He's looking out of a window or looking
00:56:21.920 --> 00:56:22.710
out of a door.
00:56:22.720 --> 00:56:24.710
>> That's my favorite one. Uh especially
00:56:24.720 --> 00:56:28.390
now. Um, we were
00:56:28.400 --> 00:56:30.950
we were in distribution top floor, maybe
00:56:30.960 --> 00:56:32.950
third floor. It was the floor that had
00:56:32.960 --> 00:56:35.589
all the safety hour awards and plaques
00:56:35.599 --> 00:56:37.589
and stuff on the wall. Um, we were
00:56:37.599 --> 00:56:40.950
walking through um the the folks that
00:56:40.960 --> 00:56:43.589
were taking stuff. I mean, they had gone
00:56:43.599 --> 00:56:45.589
ransacked a lot of stuff and it's sad,
00:56:45.599 --> 00:56:49.750
but there were export books on the
00:56:49.760 --> 00:56:53.190
floor, big post books, and um I picked
00:56:53.200 --> 00:56:55.510
one up. Matter of fact, I donated it um
00:56:55.520 --> 00:56:58.549
the other night. So that from 1951, I
00:56:58.559 --> 00:57:02.150
think um when we were exporting to
00:57:02.160 --> 00:57:04.150
Hawaii and Alaska.
00:57:04.160 --> 00:57:06.230
>> Yeah. So that tells you something. But
00:57:06.240 --> 00:57:07.910
um
00:57:07.920 --> 00:57:10.789
um Oh gosh, I'm Where was I going with
00:57:10.799 --> 00:57:11.349
this?
00:57:11.359 --> 00:57:12.549
>> Dad looking out the window.
00:57:12.559 --> 00:57:17.750
>> Yes. Um he he we were third floor. Um,
00:57:17.760 --> 00:57:20.470
but the the pile of rubble was so high
00:57:20.480 --> 00:57:23.030
that it looked like we're ground floor.
00:57:23.040 --> 00:57:25.270
And I just happened to look up and dad's
00:57:25.280 --> 00:57:26.789
standing there. We got our hard hats on
00:57:26.799 --> 00:57:29.109
and he's touching these loose bricks in
00:57:29.119 --> 00:57:31.109
the hole that they'd knocked in there.
00:57:31.119 --> 00:57:33.349
>> And there it is.
00:57:33.359 --> 00:57:36.230
>> Yeah. I I'd never seen that. Is not
00:57:36.240 --> 00:57:39.430
playing. I shot that. I dang near cried
00:57:39.440 --> 00:57:41.670
after I had it. And I knew I had it.
00:57:41.680 --> 00:57:42.069
>> Um,
00:57:42.079 --> 00:57:44.390
>> Life magazine quality stuff. I well
00:57:44.400 --> 00:57:45.510
that's a push but
00:57:45.520 --> 00:57:47.030
>> no trust me this is
00:57:47.040 --> 00:57:49.910
>> but it tells it tells a bigger story to
00:57:49.920 --> 00:57:52.230
me because I know the background you
00:57:52.240 --> 00:57:53.109
know
00:57:53.119 --> 00:57:55.510
>> obviously grew up with him but um
00:57:55.520 --> 00:58:00.309
>> but yeah um he's looking out and he's
00:58:00.319 --> 00:58:01.910
seeing his past
00:58:01.920 --> 00:58:03.030
>> right
00:58:03.040 --> 00:58:05.109
>> but yet I'm looking out kind of seeing
00:58:05.119 --> 00:58:06.630
the future
00:58:06.640 --> 00:58:08.309
>> what's he thinking and we're right in
00:58:08.319 --> 00:58:10.549
the middle of all that in that one image
00:58:10.559 --> 00:58:11.190
and
00:58:11.200 --> 00:58:13.910
>> now I I understand unbelievable But
00:58:13.920 --> 00:58:18.150
yeah, so the um the the the towel tags
00:58:18.160 --> 00:58:20.870
you guys have came from right after that
00:58:20.880 --> 00:58:21.349
shot
00:58:21.359 --> 00:58:22.150
>> of you.
00:58:22.160 --> 00:58:24.309
>> Um cuz I got a roll.
00:58:24.319 --> 00:58:25.349
>> Oh, from that same shot.
00:58:25.359 --> 00:58:27.030
>> Yeah. Also right here.
00:58:27.040 --> 00:58:29.109
>> And I tell you what, when I bring the uh
00:58:29.119 --> 00:58:31.190
the poster, I'll bring you a little
00:58:31.200 --> 00:58:34.230
stack of uh Egyptian Supreme
00:58:34.240 --> 00:58:35.349
>> line
00:58:35.359 --> 00:58:36.630
>> that we did here.
00:58:36.640 --> 00:58:37.349
>> How about that?
00:58:37.359 --> 00:58:39.030
>> It's not on a roll, it's individuals,
00:58:39.040 --> 00:58:40.630
but um
00:58:40.640 --> 00:58:43.750
>> Very cool. I made sure everybody had,
00:58:43.760 --> 00:58:47.589
>> you know, a photo or two um with the KHA
00:58:47.599 --> 00:58:49.270
logo on it. I did I designed that. I
00:58:49.280 --> 00:58:51.349
don't know if you knew that, but um so I
00:58:51.359 --> 00:58:53.190
put that on the time and the date just
00:58:53.200 --> 00:58:56.870
just sort of memorialized that. But um
00:58:56.880 --> 00:58:59.910
>> and I gave everybody a a tag so they got
00:58:59.920 --> 00:59:00.630
a kick out of that.
00:59:00.640 --> 00:59:02.630
>> And those are phenomenal.
00:59:02.640 --> 00:59:06.309
>> Yeah. I mean those are all wonderful and
00:59:06.319 --> 00:59:08.390
>> you know I mean again we've said it a
00:59:08.400 --> 00:59:10.630
million times. I mean that documenting
00:59:10.640 --> 00:59:12.710
that history,
00:59:12.720 --> 00:59:14.950
there's plenty of kids alive in this
00:59:14.960 --> 00:59:17.990
town right now who don't know anything
00:59:18.000 --> 00:59:18.710
about that,
00:59:18.720 --> 00:59:19.829
>> right? And that's
00:59:19.839 --> 00:59:21.589
>> no clue what was there.
00:59:21.599 --> 00:59:24.150
>> That's that's where all this comes in.
00:59:24.160 --> 00:59:24.950
>> Yep.
00:59:24.960 --> 00:59:27.589
>> I mean, I I feel like I'm bragging, but
00:59:27.599 --> 00:59:29.349
I had that foresight then.
00:59:29.359 --> 00:59:30.470
>> Oh, yeah. you you
00:59:30.480 --> 00:59:32.230
>> I didn't know that town was going to
00:59:32.240 --> 00:59:34.630
change, the city was going to change so
00:59:34.640 --> 00:59:36.150
much,
00:59:36.160 --> 00:59:39.030
but now I'm even more glad.
00:59:39.040 --> 00:59:41.030
>> Be proud, brother. Be proud cuz you you
00:59:41.040 --> 00:59:43.430
did a great job and it's to be commended
00:59:43.440 --> 00:59:44.309
and we thank you.
00:59:44.319 --> 00:59:44.710
>> Well,
00:59:44.720 --> 00:59:46.069
>> and to be a South Rowan guy.
00:59:46.079 --> 00:59:48.121
>> Yes, sir. Pride. Raider pride.
00:59:48.131 --> 00:59:49.030
[laughter]
00:59:49.040 --> 00:59:51.270
>> Thank you for coming and sharing that
00:59:51.280 --> 00:59:52.069
with us today. Thank you,
00:59:52.079 --> 00:59:52.870
>> fellas. I appreciate it.
00:59:52.880 --> 00:59:53.990
>> Been a great show,
00:59:54.000 --> 00:59:55.109
>> David. You too, buddy.
00:59:55.119 --> 00:59:56.150
>> You as well. It's
00:59:56.160 --> 00:59:57.589
>> going to be a good year for our Raiders,
00:59:57.599 --> 00:59:58.549
by the way. They're going I think
00:59:58.559 --> 01:00:00.870
they're going to have a good year.
01:00:00.880 --> 01:00:03.910
>> I'm just amazed. Had a great time. Good
01:00:03.920 --> 01:00:05.670
great going down memory lane.
01:00:05.680 --> 01:00:06.150
>> Yeah.
01:00:06.160 --> 01:00:09.510
>> And uh he done an excellent job and
01:00:09.520 --> 01:00:11.510
>> I'm going home and school myself.
01:00:11.520 --> 01:00:11.990
>> Yeah.
01:00:12.000 --> 01:00:15.109
>> On chadmmititchell.com.
01:00:15.119 --> 01:00:16.309
>> Probably buying something off there.
01:00:16.319 --> 01:00:18.150
>> Yeah, we better. [laughter]
01:00:18.160 --> 01:00:20.549
>> Just a we appreciate it.
01:00:20.559 --> 01:00:21.910
>> Yeah. Well, let let me know what you
01:00:21.920 --> 01:00:25.190
think. We will we might buy some things.
01:00:25.200 --> 01:00:28.150
>> Very good. Um,
01:00:28.160 --> 01:00:30.549
what's for supper? I already ate.
01:00:30.559 --> 01:00:32.710
>> Damn it. [laughter] We ain't eating. We
01:00:32.720 --> 01:00:34.390
had eaten in so long. I was thinking
01:00:34.400 --> 01:00:37.270
we'd go out and do something tonight.
01:00:37.280 --> 01:00:39.109
>> You know, I'm not opposed to double
01:00:39.119 --> 01:00:41.030
double suppers.
01:00:41.040 --> 01:00:43.109
>> Good deal. Good [laughter] deal. Um,
01:00:43.119 --> 01:00:44.710
>> is that like second breakfast, double
01:00:44.720 --> 01:00:45.190
supper?

pick me up from preschool at First
01:01:27.760 --> 01:01:29.349
Baptist and we would go out at the lake
01:01:29.359 --> 01:01:30.710
and we'd throw pennies in.
01:01:30.720 --> 01:01:31.589
>> Yep. Yep.
