On this episode of Inside College Soccer, Don Williams sits down with Toney Anderson, goalkeeper coach at High Point University, for a wide-ranging conversation covering the current state of college soccer, goalkeeper development, and what it really takes to succeed at the next level.
Toney shares his journey from playing collegiate soccer at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and University of Illinois Chicago to coaching in MLS Next with FC United and Bavarian SC, before moving into the college ranks at Concordia University Wisconsin, the University of Evansville and now High Point University.
Don and Toney discuss the evolving landscape of college soccer, recruiting, player development and the unique demands of coaching goalkeepers at the collegiate level - including the importance of mentality, confidence and leadership for goalkeepers looking to compete at higher levels.
The episode also touches on Toney's family connection to the game as the son of legendary goalkeeper coach Stan Anderson, who previously appeared on Episode 85 of Inside College Soccer. Toney reflects on growing up around Camp Shutout - the world-renowned goalkeeper camp his family has helped build - and how those experiences shaped his coaching philosophy.
A must-listen for players, parents, coaches and especially goalkeepers looking to better understand the modern college soccer environment.
