TIETOJA TÄSTÄ JAKSOSTA
Solo travel was never on my list. I've traveled my whole life, almost always with family or to visit family, so landing in Las Vegas on my own for a business meeting has been an eye-opener. You make every call yourself, right down to what's for dinner and when. That turns out to be a quick way to build confidence, and confidence is what this third round of Dating in the Wild is about. Ask people what they find attractive in a partner, and self-confidence comes up again and again. I think the reason is wholeness. When you feel whole and complete exactly as you are, and exactly as you are not, you stop looking for someone else to fill a gap inside you. It's the tango idea I keep coming back to: you dance with a partner, and you stay on your own axis.
Most of us spent our 20s and 30s running on outside approval, and there is nothing wrong with us for that. It is how humans learn. When my son was little, and thunder rolled, he would look at my face to find out whether to be scared. I told him it was God farting, and that settled it. Growing up gives us the chance to ask ourselves what we're feeling first, and that choice gets stronger the more we make it. I also share the overgiving lesson I learned early on when I went back into dating. I went too fast and gave too much, and a sweet start slid into little jabs and little resentments. Receiving care well is its own gift to the person giving it. Then I retire the idea of "the one." I still call my late husband the love of my life, which doesn't mean there won't be a next one. A teaching from Kabbalah says everyone who matters in your life is a soulmate with a lesson to teach, and the most important soulmate you will ever have is you.
