TIETOJA TÄSTÄ JAKSOSTA
We’re in Spooktober mode, and we’re planting our flag. For our continuing October Halloween exploration we bring you an often overlooked Horror movie series: Warlock. It's one of those franchises we keep waiting for people to rediscover, because the first film has everything genre fans claim they want: a confident supernatural villain, strange old-world witchcraft rules, and a time-travel chase that never stops pushing forward. Julian Sands brings a “posh evil” presence that feels genuinely dangerous, sexy, and unpredictable, the kind of performance that should have made him a bigger horror household name.
We dig into what makes Warlock feel different from the slasher giants and even from its supernatural peers. The magic has texture: pennies in mouths, toes bound to thumbs, cold iron, nails in footprints, boiled fat for flight, and a Grand Grimoire that can literally unmake creation if the Warlock speaks the name of God backwards. Along the way, we talk about the film’s underappreciated craft, its VHS-fueled cult life, and how studio chaos and release timing helped keep it from getting the recognition it deserved.
Then we take the full franchise tour. Warlock 2 The Armageddon goes bigger, louder, and more 90s, with druid stones, eclipse stakes, and set pieces that flirt with comic book logic before that became the norm. Warlock 3 The End of Innocence, though, is where we draw a hard line, and yes, we explain why. We also hit the spin-off legacy, including a novelization, comics, and the 90s video game, plus a sober note on real-world media panic and why blaming horror movies is a shortcut.
If you enjoy smart horror deep dives and cult franchise autopsies, subscribe, share the show with a fellow monster nerd, and leave us a review. What’s your Warlock ranking: 1, 2, or refuse to acknowledge 3?

00:00:06.719 --> 00:00:09.599
In a time of fear and suspicion.
00:00:09.839 --> 00:00:13.759
You choose to admit your crimes before man and God.
00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:16.399
His coming was foretold.
00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:28.000
Now he is here.
00:00:28.399 --> 00:00:29.519
You know the side.
00:00:29.760 --> 00:00:31.199
You're bewitched.
00:00:37.280 --> 00:00:39.759
He has the face of an angel.
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:43.200
The god of the devil.
00:01:18.159 --> 00:01:19.599
The girl from the present.
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:21.359
You know what he's capable of?
00:01:22.719 --> 00:01:24.480
I'm not letting harm you.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:27.920
Are the only hope for the future?
00:01:33.200 --> 00:01:42.719
This is a terrifying adventure that could set the world on fire warlock.
00:01:47.040 --> 00:01:50.799
Gentlemen, let's broaden our minds.
00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:26.080
Adam Warlock.
00:02:26.400 --> 00:02:27.039
Yeah.
00:02:27.280 --> 00:02:30.240
Man, are there any other good warlocks in fiction?
00:02:30.719 --> 00:02:32.879
Well, there's warlock in Marvel as well.
00:02:33.199 --> 00:02:35.759
There's the techno warlock, the mutant.
00:02:35.840 --> 00:02:35.919
Yeah.
00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:38.719
Yeah, there's that warlock in there, but there's also Adam Warlock.
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:39.199
Yeah, right.
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:40.560
Yeah, the two warlocks.
00:02:40.800 --> 00:02:41.360
The two warlocks.
00:02:41.599 --> 00:02:42.400
The two Marvel Warlocks.
00:02:43.759 --> 00:02:44.719
Did they ever meet?
00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:46.159
I can't think of them meeting.
00:02:46.400 --> 00:02:48.080
I don't know, maybe during the Infinity saga.
00:02:48.319 --> 00:02:48.560
I don't know.
00:02:49.120 --> 00:02:51.039
That's literally the only thing I was thinking of.
00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:53.840
I I I feel like that was before the phalanx.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:54.639
I don't know.
00:02:54.960 --> 00:02:55.680
Ah, who knows?
00:02:56.560 --> 00:02:57.919
Douglas Warlock?
00:02:58.080 --> 00:02:59.199
What does the computer say?
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:01.680
Douglas Ramsey, aka Warlock.
00:03:01.919 --> 00:03:05.599
Uh well New Year's 99 was in what, 1991 or so?
00:03:06.080 --> 00:03:06.560
1990?
00:03:06.719 --> 00:03:10.879
That's when uh Rob Liefeld took over and became X Force after that.
00:03:11.039 --> 00:03:14.960
So that would have been so 60 would have been at least three, four years before that.
00:03:15.199 --> 00:03:17.039
New Union 60 was 87.
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:18.159
87.
00:03:18.800 --> 00:03:18.960
Okay.
00:03:19.120 --> 00:03:21.120
And the Infinity Saga was like 91.
00:03:21.360 --> 00:03:22.240
That sounds accurate.
00:03:22.639 --> 00:03:24.560
If we're using earthly numbers.
00:03:24.960 --> 00:03:26.479
If we're using the Julian calendar.
00:03:26.800 --> 00:03:28.159
The Julian Sands calendar?
00:03:28.400 --> 00:03:30.400
Yes, the Julian Sands calendar, exactly.
00:03:30.639 --> 00:03:32.319
It's a countdown to evil.
00:03:32.879 --> 00:03:34.960
Alright, well, welcome back to Dispatch Ajax.
00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:35.840
I'm Skip.
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:36.560
I'm Jake.
00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:37.360
True.
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:40.400
We are in our Spooktober.
00:03:40.879 --> 00:03:46.400
And I wanted to cover a franchise that I just don't think gets much love.
00:03:46.639 --> 00:03:48.000
I think it deserves it.
00:03:48.159 --> 00:03:51.520
And that particular franchise is the Warlock films.
00:03:51.759 --> 00:03:52.159
Mm-hmm.
00:03:52.800 --> 00:03:56.879
What makes Warlock so memorable and worth talking about?
00:03:57.199 --> 00:04:01.199
For me, I grew up watching at least the first Warlock film.
00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:02.960
I thought it was great fun as a kid.
00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:04.800
I'm sure I watched it way too young.
00:04:05.039 --> 00:04:11.840
I don't know if a seven or eight-year-old needs to be watching the Warlock film, but you know, latchkey kids and whatnot.
00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:25.839
So I think the Warlock character is a sinister malevolence on par with a Freddy, a leprechaun, a wishmaster, but with a steely elitism and a raw sexuality.
00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:28.079
Yeah, I was thinking Wishmaster a lot too.
00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:28.399
Yeah.
00:04:28.560 --> 00:04:37.120
I think it also took on the role of an evil magic practitioner and a male witch, something that wasn't seen or explored much and still hasn't been to this day.
00:04:37.360 --> 00:04:46.079
The character also didn't really rely on puns or necessarily gruesomeness, but his deeds were just as foul and horrific as any of his cohorts.
00:04:46.480 --> 00:04:53.759
It wasn't clever wordplay or whatever, or you know, trickery like in uh Wishmaster, or even Leprechaun to that extent.
00:04:53.920 --> 00:05:01.439
But it is a compelling character, and he really is in that very strange pantheon that existed in this particular period of time.
00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:13.120
Not the slasher genre, but the supernatural Hellraiser, Leprechaun, Wishmaster, sort of second wave of but for lack of a better term, new wave monsters.
00:05:13.439 --> 00:05:14.480
Post-hammer horror.
00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:30.240
Yeah, and then I think also it uh maybe a third generation, because I feel like you had, you know, Freddie Krueger, Jason, Michael Myers, these icons, and then you kind of had a second wave with your penhead, um, your wishmaster, your leprechaun.
00:05:30.399 --> 00:05:32.879
But for some reason, Warlock is just left out of that.
00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:34.399
Those are the tail end of that.
00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:35.759
Well, technically not.
00:05:35.920 --> 00:05:36.959
Uh, we'll get into that.
00:05:37.120 --> 00:05:37.360
Hmm.
00:05:37.600 --> 00:05:41.600
I think another reason that it should be talked about is Julian Sands.
00:05:41.759 --> 00:05:46.240
I think he is a stunning presence in this film, and pretty much in general.
00:05:46.399 --> 00:05:54.720
He has this posh accent, this seductive face, a lithe figure, dashing straight blonde hair, and he's just damn sexy.
00:05:54.879 --> 00:05:57.759
Especially in this film, he's kind of like an evil sting.
00:05:58.240 --> 00:05:59.279
So sting.
00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:04.240
And I think it made for an engaging evil presence on the film.
00:06:04.399 --> 00:06:13.600
I always thought that Julian Sands was meant for more, and especially when they were casting the Harry Potter films, I had envisioned him as the perfect actor to play Malfoy's father.
00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:15.040
Oh yeah, I can see it.
00:06:15.279 --> 00:06:16.480
But they went in a different direction.
00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:20.000
The slick black blonde hair and uh yeah, I can see it.
00:06:20.240 --> 00:06:29.279
Yeah, and just that that elite persona he has, his way of using Shakespearean dialogue, I just thought would have really worked.
00:06:29.439 --> 00:06:31.120
And just would have been a natural fit.
00:06:31.360 --> 00:06:33.519
But you know, fan casting and whatnot.
00:06:33.839 --> 00:06:40.639
Yeah, I feel like his character is a little bit of uh rejection of sort of like old British uh aristocratic elitism.
00:06:41.279 --> 00:07:00.959
And I know I know this is mostly through an American lens, so that takes away from that commentary a little bit and makes it a little bit more two-dimensional, but like I feel like his character is sort of a commentary on that, the sort of death of the old guard, the old British elitist guard like post-World War II into the modern era.
00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:04.959
But I also think it has that underlying kind of automatic antagonism.
00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:23.120
It's the same thing that they did with Star Wars by casting all of the Empire elites as British actors, and so like there's a certain aristocratic air that's automatically put to them, and we automatically kind of see envision them as the bad guys, the others, because they're not American.
00:07:23.439 --> 00:07:26.800
Interestingly enough, though, Vader chalks out the American one.
00:07:28.639 --> 00:07:29.519
Maybe that says something.
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:30.399
Yeah, exactly.
00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:36.399
I also think that this film it delves into the witch lore in a different, unique, and fascinating way.
00:07:36.639 --> 00:07:42.720
A lot of the stuff that they had on screen that felt lived in and examples from a legitimate past.
00:07:42.959 --> 00:07:49.759
Things like things they use in this film, especially in the first film, there are the pennies in the mouth, the binding of the toes to the thumbs.
00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:51.199
That was so bizarre.
00:07:51.360 --> 00:07:53.360
It's so especially in the commentary.
00:07:53.519 --> 00:08:08.319
The director talks about they do that because the magic needs like a circuit to pass through, and by binding the toes to the big toe to the thumbs, doesn't allow the circuit to connect and they can't use the magic.
00:08:08.480 --> 00:08:09.120
That's science.
00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:09.360
Yeah.
00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:12.160
Well, I mean, it's science from 1600, you know.
00:08:12.399 --> 00:08:13.360
Yeah, that's about right.
00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:26.639
I think also things that you don't see in other films using the nails on the footsteps left by the warlock to hurt him, or using the boiled fat of an unbaptized male child for a flight potion.
00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:27.759
The the salt.
00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:29.759
Martha Stewart, I think, has a recipe for that.
00:08:29.920 --> 00:08:30.879
Oh, well, it's pretty good.
00:08:30.959 --> 00:08:33.440
It's not as good as Gianna De Laurentis, but you know.
00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:35.840
You like watching her eat it during her show.
00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:37.519
Oh, oh, I certainly do.
00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:38.480
Those close-ups.
00:08:41.360 --> 00:08:42.399
You render that kid.
00:08:42.639 --> 00:08:45.600
He also has this ectoplasm that he uses.
00:08:45.919 --> 00:08:53.440
I think it doesn't always look the best because it's it's late 80s graphics, it's pre-CGI, but I also think it looks interesting.
00:08:53.600 --> 00:08:57.039
It's kind of like fire, but also a liquid.
00:08:57.120 --> 00:09:01.519
It's just something that I can't think of another bad guy who uses something like that.
00:09:01.600 --> 00:09:04.159
And it's very distinct for this film.
00:09:04.399 --> 00:09:05.679
Yeah, and it's pretty evocative.
00:09:05.759 --> 00:09:09.759
I also don't know many horror icons that wear pinky rings either.
00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:10.320
Yeah.
00:09:10.639 --> 00:09:12.159
Which is a plot point.
00:09:12.960 --> 00:09:15.360
I think it's something that they should always wear personally.
00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:17.039
I'd love Freddie to have one of those.
00:09:17.279 --> 00:09:18.639
How would you even get that on there?
00:09:18.799 --> 00:09:19.919
I I don't want to know.
00:09:20.080 --> 00:09:20.399
You know?
00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:22.960
It's like I don't want to know where the glove comes from.
00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:25.600
He just has this fucked up claw glove, you know?
00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:26.399
Yeah, it's true.
00:09:26.480 --> 00:09:27.519
He's a thing of nightmares.
00:09:27.600 --> 00:09:29.679
You don't need to know all the logistics necessarily.
00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:30.720
Exactly.
00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:34.960
I think Sans stuck out in my mind, but never got the wider reckoning she deserved.
00:09:35.039 --> 00:09:44.720
Perhaps because the production company that was making this film folded and the film was iced from a theatrical run, only finding notoriety of any sort on VHS shelves.
00:09:44.879 --> 00:09:45.200
Yep.
00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:51.039
The story and setting at the time were misunderstood, compared heavily in reviews to Terminator or Highlander.
00:09:51.200 --> 00:10:02.080
One because they're uh there's uh time travelers who are chasing each other in our time, or a person from the medieval past brought to modern day.
00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:13.840
Again, just surface level comparisons that don't hold any more weight, but I feel like they brought the film down because people were expecting one thing and got something different, or the connections didn't quite land.
00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:19.519
Uh, to me, it feels more akin to something like wax work in that sense than it does those movies.
00:10:19.759 --> 00:10:21.200
Was it Waxwork 2 or whatever?
00:10:21.519 --> 00:10:22.879
Whichever one did they travel in time?
00:10:23.120 --> 00:10:26.159
Yeah, in fact, we'll encounter Waxwork 2 in the near future.
00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:34.480
But I I think those similarities should have been comparison points and pointed at something different and should have been viewed more as a boon, but not a bane.
00:10:34.639 --> 00:10:35.120
Right.
00:10:35.360 --> 00:10:39.679
But unfortunately, it just didn't get the recognition, the release, or the love.
00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:46.720
It was part of the final slate of pictures for New World, uh, much like Dolph Lundgren's Punisher.
00:10:46.799 --> 00:10:49.279
It was in that last round before New World folded.
00:10:49.440 --> 00:10:49.679
Yeah.
00:10:49.840 --> 00:10:50.000
Yeah.
00:10:50.159 --> 00:10:58.399
At the time, New World Pictures changed its name to New World Entertainment to better reflect its range of subsidiaries besides the film studio, including its purchase of Marvel Comics.
00:10:58.559 --> 00:10:59.600
Oh boy, was that weird.
00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:04.960
And partner Harry Sloan said that it would more accurately reflect the business that the company is in.
00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:14.399
That year of '87, New World almost purchased two tour companies of Kenner, Parker Toys, and Mitchell, but both planned acquisitions never materialized.
00:11:14.559 --> 00:11:17.919
Then quickly thereafter, what a weird world that'd have been.
00:11:18.080 --> 00:11:25.279
Marvel Entertainment Group was sold to Andrew's Group on January 6, 1989, and Marvel Productions was excluded from the sale.
00:11:25.440 --> 00:11:32.240
Then, after a failed bid from Path Communications, New World was sold to Andrew's Group in April of '89.
00:11:32.320 --> 00:11:48.159
And then New World's television operations would continue, but their motion picture and home video activity would be cut back, and then eventually scrapped entirely, and it went into chapter 11 and was shut down in 1990.
00:11:48.480 --> 00:11:49.360
God, so fast.
00:11:49.600 --> 00:12:02.879
But thankfully, some of that stuff would be sold to Sony Pictures, who used the assets to relaunch TriStar television, and that would allow for things like Santa Barbara and the Wonder Years to be made on the ashes of New World's Back.
00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:03.919
Well, at least we got that.
00:12:04.159 --> 00:12:04.799
Yay us.
00:12:05.200 --> 00:12:06.879
Santa Barbara, Jesus Christ.
00:12:07.039 --> 00:12:08.720
That's a deep cut soap opera.
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:09.440
Yeah.
00:12:09.600 --> 00:12:10.639
That's why I thought you'd like that.
00:12:10.799 --> 00:12:11.600
No, I've seen it.
00:12:11.679 --> 00:12:12.879
I just thought it was older than that.
00:12:13.039 --> 00:12:24.240
So Warlock from 1999 was written by David Tuohee, who first did Critters 2, but later wrote The Fugitive, which I believe was nominated for, if not one, uh an Oscar for screenplay.
00:12:24.399 --> 00:12:28.799
Is that movie the best adaptation of an old property other than Mission Impossible?
00:12:29.039 --> 00:12:32.080
Is the Fugitive the best adaptation of an old TV show property from?
00:12:32.559 --> 00:12:33.360
Ooh, man.
00:12:33.679 --> 00:12:37.360
Uh and I'm not gonna count Star Trek, the Abramstone.
00:12:37.679 --> 00:12:38.399
That doesn't count.
00:12:38.559 --> 00:12:40.559
I'm gonna guess yes.
00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:45.679
I can't think of anything that was that generally regarded, even more so than the original show.
00:12:45.840 --> 00:12:46.000
Yeah.
00:12:46.240 --> 00:12:46.639
Great movie.
00:12:46.799 --> 00:12:47.600
I think you're right about that.
00:12:47.759 --> 00:12:48.080
Anyway.
00:12:48.240 --> 00:12:49.120
And uh I was wrong.
00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:52.799
It wasn't nominated for an Oscar, but it did win many awards.
00:12:52.960 --> 00:12:57.279
But David Tohe later went on to write and direct The Arrival with Charlie Sheen.
00:12:57.440 --> 00:12:57.919
Oh boy.
00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:00.240
Interesting alien invasion film.
00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:03.200
Charlie Sheen and his goatee, who's second build.
00:13:03.679 --> 00:13:04.879
And his beard yet.
00:13:05.039 --> 00:13:06.720
His goatee is right below.
00:13:07.600 --> 00:13:10.559
Tohe would also do Pitch Black and all of its sequels.
00:13:10.720 --> 00:13:10.960
Huh.
00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:12.960
Yeah, he would write and direct all of those.
00:13:13.120 --> 00:13:14.720
Are you jumping to the Riddick movies?
00:13:15.360 --> 00:13:15.759
Yeah.
00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:16.480
Oh, okay.
00:13:16.639 --> 00:13:21.120
Well, first when you said Pitch Black and its sequels, I was like, wait, am I thinking of the wrong film?
00:13:21.360 --> 00:13:23.679
Because I keep thinking, is there a Pitch Black 2?
00:13:23.759 --> 00:13:24.720
No, that's not right.
00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:28.559
Those Riddick movies get more and more absurd as they try to be Dune so hard.
00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:31.600
At least the second one had some fun ideas.
00:13:31.759 --> 00:13:32.879
It's a bit of a mess.
00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:36.240
The third one is just a rehashing of Pitch Black.
00:13:36.399 --> 00:13:38.000
Yeah, they will try to go back to their source.
00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:39.919
And it's all just kind of stealing from Dune anyway.
00:13:40.080 --> 00:13:42.639
Pitch Black's the only one that's kind of like feels wholly original.
00:13:42.879 --> 00:13:49.360
If I remember correctly, Dave Otwoke was pitching a sequel for aliens as part of the franchise.
00:13:49.519 --> 00:13:53.039
They did not bite on that, so he's like, fuck it, I'll make my own.
00:13:53.200 --> 00:13:57.039
And indeed he did and made pitch black and thus created that.
00:13:57.279 --> 00:14:03.039
I could have made a good alien movie, but it would have been kind of a little just like a chapter in the alien saga and wouldn't have stood out on its own.
00:14:03.279 --> 00:14:08.080
No, I think pitch black works as its own thing, but I definitely see its inspiration.
00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:13.279
I mean, it's you know, xenomorph on a planet with one badass dude, criminal, blah blah blah.
00:14:13.360 --> 00:14:13.840
I think it works.
00:14:13.919 --> 00:14:14.480
It's it's fun.
00:14:14.639 --> 00:14:15.519
Pitchblack's a good movie.
00:14:15.600 --> 00:14:16.559
I like Pitch Black for sure.
00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:21.440
Twohe first conceived of the story kind of as a reversal of what the film originally became.
00:14:21.600 --> 00:14:33.039
He said he spent weeks trying to make Warlock someone who was persecuted during the witchcraze of the 17th century, and then came forward in a time and experienced much the same persecution in the present for other reasons.
00:14:33.360 --> 00:14:33.840
Interesting.
00:14:34.080 --> 00:14:46.879
But Twohe revised and refined the story to be a little more simplistic and a little more like good versus evil time travel kind of thing, mostly due to compromises and budget restrictions.
00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:50.399
The production company of New World, they loved the idea.
00:14:50.559 --> 00:14:56.320
They wanted to make it, but they needed a director, so they brought on Steve Minor, who was brought to the film ready to shoot.
00:14:56.559 --> 00:15:03.120
He had done previous horror with Friday the 13th, part two and three, and then the movie House, which I'm a big fan of.
00:15:03.360 --> 00:15:04.559
Not House 2, but House.
00:15:04.720 --> 00:15:05.759
No, yeah, the original House.
00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:07.200
Great George Wendt vehicle.
00:15:07.360 --> 00:15:07.600
Yes.
00:15:07.919 --> 00:15:10.080
Stars William Kat, Greatest American Hero.
00:15:10.240 --> 00:15:10.480
Yeah.
00:15:10.720 --> 00:15:15.039
A big influence on early superhero storytelling on screen.
00:15:15.200 --> 00:15:19.840
So he did House, obviously, and then the ill-conceived and worse-fated Soul Man.
00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:20.320
Oof.
00:15:20.799 --> 00:15:31.360
Where a young gent wants to get into college, but he's having trouble finding financial backing, so he decides, what if I pretend to be a black man and get scholarships via that way?
00:15:31.440 --> 00:15:34.559
And so he has to put on blackface and then go to college.
00:15:34.720 --> 00:15:34.960
Yes.
00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:35.519
Wolf.
00:15:35.759 --> 00:15:39.120
Do you really want that as your bona fides that you wrote Soul Man?
00:15:39.279 --> 00:15:40.159
Well, he directed it.
00:15:40.320 --> 00:15:41.279
He didn't write Soul Man.
00:15:41.440 --> 00:15:42.320
Still, you should know better.
00:15:42.480 --> 00:15:42.799
Yeah.
00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:45.440
You could have been the guy in the room that's like, should we be doing this?
00:15:45.679 --> 00:15:46.960
Who wrote Soul Man?
00:15:47.039 --> 00:15:48.320
Let's just find out real quick.
00:15:48.480 --> 00:15:50.799
Oh, the writer and creator of The Wonder Years.
00:15:51.600 --> 00:15:52.639
Holy shit.
00:15:52.799 --> 00:15:53.200
Really?
00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:57.919
Yeah, and the entirety, the writer-creator of Ellen, the TV show.
00:15:58.399 --> 00:16:01.600
Well, that seems oddly incongruous.
00:16:02.159 --> 00:16:02.559
Yeah.
00:16:02.799 --> 00:16:07.519
Of course, Ellen was straight in that show until she came out like way later after and then it got cancelled.
00:16:07.759 --> 00:16:08.559
I don't understand.
00:16:08.720 --> 00:16:10.960
They kind of showrunners for two big shows.
00:16:11.039 --> 00:16:13.679
They did some work on Growing Pains and Lori Hill.
00:16:13.919 --> 00:16:14.240
Oh wow.
00:16:14.320 --> 00:16:15.600
That's a show I haven't thought about in a long time.
00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:17.440
They only did one movie, Soul Man.
00:16:17.679 --> 00:16:18.000
Oof.
00:16:18.080 --> 00:16:20.559
I'm sure they got along really well with Kurt Cameron then.
00:16:21.039 --> 00:16:21.440
Ugh.
00:16:21.600 --> 00:16:22.159
How weird.
00:16:22.240 --> 00:16:22.480
Yeah.
00:16:22.559 --> 00:16:24.879
That's what Steve Minor did before Helming Warlock.
00:16:24.960 --> 00:16:26.799
The composer was the great Jerry Goldsmith.
00:16:26.960 --> 00:16:29.600
Jerry kind of nailed the blend of operatic and gothic.
00:16:29.840 --> 00:16:32.399
Good score to check out, especially during Halloween times.
00:16:32.720 --> 00:16:34.000
Did a lot of Star Trek work.
00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:34.240
Yeah.
00:16:34.399 --> 00:16:37.120
So the film opens in the 1600s in New England.
00:16:37.279 --> 00:16:45.440
A captured and condemned man, Julian Sands, is held in a tower, his thumbs bound to his big toe via special manacles, and he is chained to the wall.
00:16:45.519 --> 00:16:53.120
The tower resembles a medieval hexan term or witch tower used to imprison those that were accused or convicted of witchcraft.
00:16:53.440 --> 00:16:58.960
The interior of which looks like the final battle sequence between Ramirez and uh the Kurgan.
00:17:01.919 --> 00:17:06.480
So the elders and church folk pronounce their judgment, and tomorrow he shall be executed.
00:17:06.640 --> 00:17:09.839
The witch hunter that captured him, Redfern, played by Richard E.
00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:22.240
Grant, cast directly off of his father's turn in with Nail and I comes to visit and ensure his demise, but quickly realizes that when Julian Sands's warlock is left alone, the man is too dangerous.
00:17:22.480 --> 00:17:27.839
He reaches the tower only to see the warlock about to escape, with the sky darkened and the clouds menacing.
00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:33.839
A whirlwind erupts in the tower dungeon, Redfern lunges at him, and like that, they are both gone.
00:17:34.079 --> 00:17:51.519
Little side note, like the Kurgan fighting Ramirez in Highlander, apparently the script was sent to Sean Connery to possibly play Redfern, but I don't think anything progressed past him receiving the script or his agent receiving the script.
00:17:51.680 --> 00:17:51.839
Right.
00:17:52.000 --> 00:17:54.160
That was just an anecdote that I heard in interviews.
00:17:54.640 --> 00:17:55.200
Not enough money.
00:17:55.440 --> 00:17:58.880
Also, anecdote from that scene where he's getting judgment passed on him.
00:17:58.960 --> 00:18:12.160
The I don't know, elder cleric or whatever that is passing down the verdict is played by the actor who was in the Seinfeld episode where Kramer was going to convert to Latvian Orthodox.
00:18:12.640 --> 00:18:12.880
Yeah.
00:18:13.119 --> 00:18:17.759
Which I thought was really funny because he's standing next to, yet again, Mr.
00:18:17.920 --> 00:18:18.400
Pitt.
00:18:18.640 --> 00:18:21.440
That actor has come up so many times.
00:18:21.599 --> 00:18:25.279
I'd say at least three or four episodes we've talked about recently, he's come up.
00:18:25.519 --> 00:18:26.640
Like a bad penny.
00:18:26.799 --> 00:18:27.359
Oh boy.
00:18:27.519 --> 00:18:28.319
What's a penny worth?
00:18:28.480 --> 00:18:29.279
I don't know, Alfred.
00:18:29.359 --> 00:18:29.920
You tell me.
00:18:30.160 --> 00:18:30.400
Yeah.
00:18:31.119 --> 00:18:32.480
I don't know where we were going with that.
00:18:32.720 --> 00:18:34.880
Next, we are in late 80s, California.
00:18:35.039 --> 00:18:44.880
The warlock crashes through the window of a home inhabited by a benevolent owner and has taken in roommate Cassandra, played by Lori Singer, who is the co-star of Footloose.
00:18:45.039 --> 00:18:46.240
One of big at the time.
00:18:46.640 --> 00:18:47.279
She had a moment.
00:18:47.440 --> 00:18:49.519
The warlo not much past this, but you know.
00:18:49.680 --> 00:18:52.799
The warlock is then nursed back to health while Cassandra is at work.
00:18:52.960 --> 00:19:10.799
The warlock, now cognizant of the times that he is set in, sets out on his wickedness after attacking the owner, slicing off his finger for the ring that he bore, and then going in for a kiss, but in actuality, this is a kiss of death, and he is biting off his tongue and killing the man.
00:19:11.039 --> 00:19:15.200
And spits it directly into a skillet that has been heating so that they cook dinner.
00:19:15.359 --> 00:19:16.160
That's hot tongue.
00:19:16.240 --> 00:19:16.480
Yeah.
00:19:16.720 --> 00:19:17.359
Hot tongue action.
00:19:17.680 --> 00:19:20.400
It's really bisexually charged in that scene.
00:19:20.720 --> 00:19:21.359
Oh yeah.
00:19:21.519 --> 00:19:27.519
Yeah, which there is a slathered sensuality with Julian Sand's warlock character.
00:19:27.680 --> 00:19:32.880
I think throughout the whole film, but I like that he is this sexually ambiguous figure.
00:19:33.039 --> 00:19:33.359
Oh yeah.
00:19:33.599 --> 00:19:34.319
Especially in this scene.
00:19:34.720 --> 00:19:41.119
Even though it kind of sucks because they always portray in this era at least bisexual figures as villains.
00:19:41.440 --> 00:19:45.039
It's always like that would last way longer than you would think, unfortunately.
00:19:45.519 --> 00:19:49.279
Fuck, it even showed up as Harvey and Bardem's villain character in Skyfall.
00:19:49.359 --> 00:19:53.039
It's like if they're bisexual, they must be evil or corrupted in some way.
00:19:53.519 --> 00:19:53.920
Come on.
00:19:54.079 --> 00:19:54.240
Yeah.
00:19:54.400 --> 00:19:56.400
There's a lack of purity there.
00:19:56.640 --> 00:19:58.160
Yeah, and a deviousness as well.
00:19:58.480 --> 00:19:58.799
Yeah.
00:19:59.119 --> 00:20:01.440
Now Cassandra is reached at work by the police.
00:20:01.680 --> 00:20:10.880
She's informed of her friend's death, but is met with incompetence and homophobia from the police, as they think it must have been a jealous lover of the deceased who brought forth his demise.
00:20:11.119 --> 00:20:11.440
Right.
00:20:11.680 --> 00:20:13.680
Again, a sign of the times.
00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:22.400
And because the victim may have been more than just straight beer swelling wrestling fan from the late 80s.
00:20:22.720 --> 00:20:24.079
Like the beginning of Highlander.
00:20:24.400 --> 00:20:25.839
Just like the beginning of Highlander.
00:20:26.000 --> 00:20:33.440
Yeah, but because he has a possibly different sexuality than the victim brought it upon himself, or we don't really need to put forth any effort.
00:20:33.759 --> 00:20:36.000
Yeah, it's his gay lover, obviously, or whatever.
00:20:36.160 --> 00:20:36.880
Yeah, great.
00:20:37.119 --> 00:20:39.839
Mostly because he has a ponytail and a shitty little one at that.
00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:42.559
During this time, the warlock then goes to a psychic.
00:20:42.720 --> 00:20:44.720
She says she can channel someone for him.
00:20:44.799 --> 00:20:49.279
Uh she puts on a show, but it is obviously a fraud, and he sees right through it.
00:20:49.440 --> 00:20:56.960
But due to the warlock's influence, she is then truly taken over by a demon who sets out the stakes of the film and the path for the warlock.
00:20:57.039 --> 00:21:04.799
He must find the separated and lost parts of the Grand Grimoire, Satan's Bible, which once reconstituted can provide the name of God.
00:21:04.960 --> 00:21:09.039
When spoken backwards, will thus unmake all of creation.
00:21:09.279 --> 00:21:10.160
Wow, so you've got Mr.
00:21:10.400 --> 00:21:15.039
Mixaplex and the anti-life equation at the same stroke.
00:21:15.680 --> 00:21:16.480
Exactly.
00:21:16.720 --> 00:21:17.279
Yeah.
00:21:17.519 --> 00:21:18.079
Wow.
00:21:19.039 --> 00:21:20.960
Somebody read comic books as a kid.
00:21:21.200 --> 00:21:22.799
Hey, when it works, it works.
00:21:24.240 --> 00:21:26.640
When in doubt, steal from Jack Kirby.
00:21:27.680 --> 00:21:28.960
That is Yep.
00:21:29.440 --> 00:21:29.839
Mm-hmm.
00:21:30.240 --> 00:21:38.799
So the Warlock tears her eyeballs out to be used as compasses for the grimoire, which in a deleted scene were to emerge from her nipples.
00:21:39.039 --> 00:21:39.599
Oh, of course.
00:21:39.839 --> 00:21:43.440
The warlock then smashed her into glass to then pick out.
00:21:43.680 --> 00:21:44.240
Fair enough.
00:21:44.400 --> 00:21:51.839
It was shot a bit of and shown, at least in a rough cut, to some people, and they thought it was ridiculous and unnecessary and thus cut.
00:21:52.160 --> 00:21:55.039
Especially when she utters the line, hey, my eyes are down here.
00:21:58.480 --> 00:22:02.799
But sometimes the making of a Uh, just as much about what is left out than what's left in.
00:22:02.960 --> 00:22:04.160
Yeah, what's unsaid.
00:22:04.720 --> 00:22:09.680
Now those same supposed nipple eyeballs lead him back to Cassandra's house.
00:22:09.759 --> 00:22:19.519
The warlock finds a bit of the book that he's searching for, stashed in an antique table, but Cassandra is there, and after a scuffle, the warlock steals her charm bracelet and curses her.
00:22:19.839 --> 00:22:22.000
Tout, tout, through and about.
00:22:22.160 --> 00:22:24.160
Your callow life in dismay.
00:22:24.400 --> 00:22:29.759
Rentum oxculum tormentum a decade, twice over a day.
00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:33.119
Thus forcing her to age twenty years every day.
00:22:33.839 --> 00:22:38.799
I kind of liked this uh Rumpel Stiltskin-esque Wiccan curse.
00:22:39.039 --> 00:22:41.599
Yeah, they're playing into the witch's gothic kind of vibe.
00:22:41.920 --> 00:22:44.240
Can I offer an alternative name for the eyeballs?
00:22:44.480 --> 00:22:45.279
Eye boobs.
00:22:46.559 --> 00:22:48.160
I'm just gonna put that out there.
00:22:49.039 --> 00:22:52.480
It was right there, just waiting to be fondled.
00:22:52.799 --> 00:22:53.279
That's all I had.
00:22:54.640 --> 00:23:05.359
Now this is when Redfern also brought to the future using his witch compass to find where he had just left, where the warlock had just left, and he meets Cassandra.
00:23:05.920 --> 00:23:07.680
His Voyager's watch or whatever.
00:23:07.759 --> 00:23:08.000
Yeah.
00:23:08.319 --> 00:23:09.440
Which looks pretty cool.
00:23:09.680 --> 00:23:10.640
It does look pretty cool.
00:23:10.880 --> 00:23:14.160
Yeah, I wouldn't mind having that on my uh coffee table or something.
00:23:14.400 --> 00:23:16.960
Yeah, that'd be pretty easy to conversation piece.
00:23:17.119 --> 00:23:18.720
So he meets Cassandra with a K.
00:23:19.039 --> 00:23:24.240
They team up so that he can get the warlock and she can regain her bracelet, thus breaking the spell.
00:23:24.319 --> 00:23:27.200
But they had to do it before she dies of old age.
00:23:27.359 --> 00:23:28.000
Oh no!
00:23:28.319 --> 00:23:30.640
And her hair grew really long overnight.
00:23:30.799 --> 00:23:33.039
Wow, it's 20 years worth, you know.
00:23:33.279 --> 00:23:36.799
She was holding up, but the hair was just like out of control.
00:23:38.480 --> 00:23:40.000
We can handle a few wrinkles.
00:23:40.079 --> 00:23:42.400
She's only like in her 40s after the first night, so.
00:23:42.720 --> 00:23:44.559
You put a half share spell on her.
00:23:44.799 --> 00:23:46.960
Does she believe in life after warlocks?
00:23:47.200 --> 00:23:47.599
Probably.
00:23:47.839 --> 00:23:52.960
Now we get some reverse Kyle Reese here as Redfern and Cassandra chase the warlock.
00:23:53.119 --> 00:23:53.359
Yes.
00:23:53.599 --> 00:23:59.200
Redfern takes the future in stride pretty well, focus solely on finding the bewitching evildoer.
00:23:59.279 --> 00:24:07.839
We learn that he is a witch hunter and that the warlock seems responsible for the murder of his beloved, while Cassandra is clumsily falling for him on their travels.
00:24:08.160 --> 00:24:11.039
This moment is where, like, oh, I see the Terminator thing.
00:24:11.200 --> 00:24:11.519
Okay.
00:24:11.680 --> 00:24:16.559
Because at first it didn't really ring with me, and then I saw the they do a total of reverse Kyle Reese.
00:24:16.640 --> 00:24:16.799
Yeah.
00:24:16.960 --> 00:24:18.640
I'm like, okay, I see it now.
00:24:18.799 --> 00:24:20.079
It's not a bad trope.
00:24:20.160 --> 00:24:23.119
It totally works within the scope and realm of this story.
00:24:23.279 --> 00:24:28.799
I think it's a little unnecessary to cut the legs out from the film because it has similarities.
00:24:29.039 --> 00:24:29.279
Right.
00:24:29.359 --> 00:24:29.759
But you know.
00:24:30.160 --> 00:24:33.519
When they're on their road and they they go to that gas station, that's a trope.
00:24:33.680 --> 00:24:34.799
We saw it in Sundown.
00:24:35.279 --> 00:24:38.079
The weird confrontation in the middle of the desert.
00:24:38.319 --> 00:24:49.920
The like strange confrontation where you pull over, you need gas, and either the attendant is weirded out or is the weird one, and you have it out with your cohort about whatever the tension is in the plot.
00:24:50.480 --> 00:24:54.400
Strangely, this exact same trope will come up again in the sequel.
00:24:55.119 --> 00:24:55.759
That's hilarious.
00:24:56.000 --> 00:24:58.400
I mean, they basically do that in Thelma and Louise as well.
00:24:58.720 --> 00:25:00.400
This is a tried and true trope.
00:25:00.480 --> 00:25:00.640
Yeah.
00:25:00.960 --> 00:25:04.559
The middle of the American Southwest Desert or California.
00:25:04.880 --> 00:25:16.559
Weird confrontation slash this is the break in which we have it out with the tension or whatever over this long drive, specifically in the middle of the nowhere gas station.
00:25:16.880 --> 00:25:17.039
Yeah.
00:25:17.200 --> 00:25:19.119
The gold old gas pump confrontation.
00:25:19.440 --> 00:25:20.079
Yeah, it's true.
00:25:20.160 --> 00:25:33.200
And I think a lot of that is because, from an American perspective, it's because like if you're driving through that area, they warn you that you don't get gas, you have to get gas now, otherwise you're stranded in the desert, and there's not going to be much in between.
00:25:33.599 --> 00:25:44.079
And so I feel like there's this American specific anxiety to that, that when you're going on these road trip trope events in movies like this, like it feels intuitive.
00:25:44.240 --> 00:25:48.799
I don't know that they necessarily the writers in movies like this that use this trope don't necessarily do it consciously.
00:25:48.960 --> 00:25:56.240
I think it's just something where the writers feel like that's the moment where they can finally break the tension or unveil the tension and have the confrontation.
00:25:56.480 --> 00:26:04.319
Because if you're worried about getting gas on your long especially if it's like an escape road trip, you're running from something, then this is your only chance.
00:26:04.720 --> 00:26:08.400
A, you might get caught and B, if you don't do this now.
00:26:08.799 --> 00:26:10.559
You've been worried about running out of gas, possibly.
00:26:10.720 --> 00:26:12.720
Thank God we found this place in the middle of nowhere.
00:26:13.119 --> 00:26:20.559
There's a little bit of that as well in Texas with the the whole Texas Chainsaw Massacre thing where they go to the gas station slash convenience store or whatever.
00:26:20.720 --> 00:26:21.759
But I think there's something to that.
00:26:22.079 --> 00:26:22.319
Yeah.
00:26:22.480 --> 00:26:28.480
It's a quite often reused trope, and I think it's viable and most of the places it's used.
00:26:28.799 --> 00:26:38.720
Yeah, and there's something about the vastness of America that you can drive for days and not reach your destination as opposed to France or England, Belgium or something.
00:26:38.799 --> 00:26:41.599
You know, it's a different scope of size that we have here.
00:26:41.920 --> 00:26:57.920
And different trains, especially since it weighs heavily on people who are from the Midwest or the East Coast where they don't understand that this vastest is out there and there are no conveniences, it'll be 150 miles between towns, between gas stations, and you're literally in one of the most arid deserts in the world.
00:26:58.319 --> 00:26:59.440
And that sort of desperation.
00:26:59.519 --> 00:27:01.759
It's already always in our collective subconscious.
00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:02.079
True.
00:27:02.240 --> 00:27:04.559
Now, Redfern and Cassandra are making good time.
00:27:04.720 --> 00:27:19.039
That is until Warlock happens upon a young boy, and through his murder and ingestion of his boiled-down fat, gains the ability to fly, which is demonstrated in a fairly unique visual style.
00:27:19.119 --> 00:27:30.720
As the warlock is crouched, his body turned for his shoulder to be faced forward, and his arm bent in an almost dab to pierce the wind, and he flies fast with a low hover above the ground.
00:27:31.119 --> 00:27:34.319
Interesting way, you don't see anybody else travel like that.
00:27:34.640 --> 00:27:36.000
This is not a Superman flight.
00:27:36.079 --> 00:27:38.400
It's completely different, and I think it feels fresh.
00:27:38.559 --> 00:27:40.079
I will just give it props for that.
00:27:40.319 --> 00:27:42.960
It feels more like something that would have come from the old world.
00:27:43.359 --> 00:27:46.000
Eventually they catch him at a Mennonite's barn.
00:27:46.079 --> 00:27:53.759
The old grandfather of the farm recognized the signs of bewitching all about, and allows both Redfern and Cassandra to help the family.
00:27:53.920 --> 00:28:02.240
After grabbing more pages from there, the warlock makes to leave, but he is grounded as Redfern throws a weather vein made of cold iron at him.
00:28:02.400 --> 00:28:11.440
The three then attempt to bind the warlock with the same toe and thumb manacles, but the grandfather is hexed by the evil eye, and the warlock escapes on foot.
00:28:11.599 --> 00:28:26.559
This is where we get Cassandra using the nails on the footprints, and through some further chasing with her old age, as the warlock is about to escape a train, is able to recapture her bracelet, and returning her youth to her.
00:28:26.720 --> 00:28:38.880
She then comes back to Redfern, who is caring for their injured man, leaving a charm of cure in the form of suspended keys that need to be regularly turned as to heal the hex wounds.
00:28:39.200 --> 00:28:42.079
Interesting, superstitious remedy there.
00:28:42.559 --> 00:28:50.640
Cassandra makes to leave, but is compelled by Redfern as he informs her of Warlock's true plans, which are to unmake the world.
00:28:50.880 --> 00:28:55.680
So she's like, Alright, I guess I should probably stay in this film for a bit longer.
00:28:56.160 --> 00:28:59.599
Now they all travel to Boston to find the final piece of the grimoire.
00:28:59.680 --> 00:29:09.200
Redfern and Cassandra find a church, and the pastor tells him that it is hidden in a coffin that is buried on consecrated earth, something a warlock can never be on.
00:29:09.359 --> 00:29:17.759
They go to the graveyard, but due to construction in modern times, some of the coffins have been moved to new gravesites that are not on holy ground.
00:29:17.920 --> 00:29:21.200
The one they need, Redfern's own grave, is one of those.
00:29:21.359 --> 00:29:26.880
They break open his coffin and find the pages along with his dead, mummified remains.
00:29:27.039 --> 00:29:28.079
But they don't know it yet.
00:29:28.240 --> 00:29:33.279
The Warlock has arrived and forces the pastor and his wife to tell him what they know.
00:29:33.519 --> 00:29:40.160
Warlock then finds Redfern and Cassandra along with the pages, but Redfern has taken them to sacred ground.
00:29:40.400 --> 00:29:45.440
Warlock captures Cassandra and threatens her life, so Redfern challenges them to a fair fight.
00:29:45.680 --> 00:29:48.960
No weapons, no magic, just mono amano.
00:29:49.119 --> 00:29:57.039
Warlock agrees, and Cassandra is flung into a nearby bay as the two men engage in fisticuffs.
00:29:57.119 --> 00:30:03.680
Warlock is winning, unfortunately, so Redfern abandons his promise and throws sacred dirt into his eyes.
00:30:03.920 --> 00:30:04.720
Dirty pool.
00:30:05.200 --> 00:30:18.240
That gives Warlock the reason to then engage his own magics and uh shoves his fist in Redfern's mouth and fills him with creepy ectoplasm, which he then wretches out.
00:30:18.400 --> 00:30:25.119
But while he's doing that, Warlock wins, gains the pages, and puts together the grand grimoire.
00:30:25.599 --> 00:30:33.200
Once assembled, the clouds gather and lightning strikes, and as he is about to utter the name of God backwards, just like Mr.
00:30:33.359 --> 00:30:42.400
Mixelplicks, Cassandra jumps on him and injects him with salt water from her insulin syringes that she was carrying.
00:30:43.039 --> 00:30:54.240
His veins bulge and he is unable to speak, then burst to flame, eventually melting and smoldering until his last skull bit is then crushed under Redfern's heel.
00:30:54.400 --> 00:31:15.200
Having vanquished the warlock, Redfern thanks Cassandra, and though she leans in for a kiss, culminating the slow romance that has developed through their adventures and journey, he kisses her closed eyelids, and then he fades in a time gust of air, with a last message for her being written on his now engraved crypt.
00:31:15.440 --> 00:31:16.400
Ooh, time travel.
00:31:16.559 --> 00:31:25.920
We close with Cassandra finishing burying the Grand Grimoire in an unknown spot of the Bonneville salt flats, which are the largest salt flats in America.
00:31:26.160 --> 00:31:26.880
Ah, yes.
00:31:27.039 --> 00:31:27.759
And film.
00:31:28.079 --> 00:31:31.519
Do you think that ectoplasm was just the fat that he drank from that little boy?
00:31:31.839 --> 00:31:35.839
Um he had the ectoplasm before then.
00:31:36.319 --> 00:31:38.240
So I'm sure it helped.
00:31:38.400 --> 00:31:43.279
I think if you're playing the warlock video game, which did come out later and we will discuss, that's true.
00:31:43.519 --> 00:31:53.759
Maybe the more little boys you had to kill, skin, and then drink their fat boiled down, I would like to think you could do that and up your ectoplasm levels.
00:31:53.920 --> 00:31:56.960
No, you're thinking of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker again.
00:32:00.000 --> 00:32:02.720
I'm always thinking of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker.
00:32:02.880 --> 00:32:04.400
He boils down little boys.
00:32:04.559 --> 00:32:06.400
I just can't help it.
00:32:08.160 --> 00:32:15.039
Now, because the film began in the United States, the director Steve Minor insisted that the leads be portrayed by British actors.
00:32:15.359 --> 00:32:18.480
Thus, they cast Julian Sands and Richard E.
00:32:18.640 --> 00:32:19.119
Grant.
00:32:19.200 --> 00:32:24.480
But originally the director opted to cast each actor's against type by reversing their roles.
00:32:24.720 --> 00:32:28.960
So initially, Julian Sands was considered for the Redfern role and Richard E.
00:32:29.119 --> 00:32:31.759
Grant for the Warlock, but they went the other direction.
00:32:32.000 --> 00:32:33.359
I can see one of those working out.
00:32:33.599 --> 00:32:35.279
I don't see Julian Sands as Redfern.
00:32:35.440 --> 00:32:39.440
No, I mean Julian Sands is so devilishly the perfect warlock.
00:32:39.599 --> 00:32:39.759
Yeah.
00:32:39.920 --> 00:32:40.400
You gotta have that.
00:32:40.559 --> 00:32:42.559
I think it's funny when they're on that Pan M flight.
00:32:43.039 --> 00:32:45.680
Just walk up to the counter and buy a ticket and then get on a plane.
00:32:45.759 --> 00:32:48.799
And Redfern is freaking out because he's so hot.
00:32:49.119 --> 00:32:56.640
You've been wearing three layers of animal furs for your entire road trip through the deserts of California.
00:32:56.960 --> 00:33:00.480
I always assumed that it was the anxiety of being in the plane.
00:33:00.640 --> 00:33:01.519
Yeah, that's probably true.
00:33:01.680 --> 00:33:06.000
I mean, when else would he have been in a small area like that in his entire life?
00:33:06.319 --> 00:33:07.519
Metal tube in the sky?
00:33:07.759 --> 00:33:08.960
Yeah, that's freaking out.
00:33:09.119 --> 00:33:11.519
No matter how well he adapts to the modern world.
00:33:11.759 --> 00:33:12.720
I empathize with that.
00:33:12.799 --> 00:33:13.519
But either way.
00:33:13.839 --> 00:33:15.759
He doesn't take anything off the whole time.
00:33:15.920 --> 00:33:18.319
Just think how fermented he is under that.
00:33:18.559 --> 00:33:22.720
I know, and you can see the head of the mink or whatever on his shoulder the whole time.
00:33:22.799 --> 00:33:23.839
It's so off-putting.
00:33:24.160 --> 00:33:25.839
Or a turn on, depending on who you are.
00:33:26.160 --> 00:33:27.039
You're Ed Gean.
00:33:27.200 --> 00:33:33.759
The fate of the unbaptized male child was intended to be shown, but was ultimately deemed too gruesome, and so they cut that out.
00:33:34.160 --> 00:33:37.519
The aging makeups for Lori Singer turned out to be a disaster.
00:33:37.759 --> 00:33:42.799
She had horrible reactions to it, later refusing to don parts of the makeup as she got, quote, older.
00:33:42.880 --> 00:33:45.759
So that's why a lot of it doesn't look super great.
00:33:45.920 --> 00:33:46.240
Yeah.
00:33:46.400 --> 00:33:48.400
She said, no, I'm just not putting that stuff on.
00:33:48.640 --> 00:33:58.640
It's like with Buddy Epson, the from the Beverly Hillbillies was originally cast as the Tin Man, but he had these horrible reactions to the lead-based paint, and so he had to drop out of the movie, you know.
00:33:58.960 --> 00:34:07.119
Although Warlock completed in 1988 and released to other countries the following year, Warlock fell into release Limbo in the United States.
00:34:07.279 --> 00:34:10.960
This premiered in 1989 and May at the Cannes Film Festival.
00:34:11.119 --> 00:34:11.920
Yeah, I saw that.
00:34:12.079 --> 00:34:23.599
It was released in June in Australia and the UK, but it didn't make it to US theatrical lease till 1991 for a small little run via TriMark Pictures.
00:34:23.840 --> 00:34:42.480
Vidmark released Warlock on VHS in May 22 of 1991, but TriMark, who had bought the rights to the shelved the first film, had a small release and decided to utilize how well it did on VHS to make a sequel in 1993, which would actually have a real theatrical run that made its money back.
00:34:42.800 --> 00:34:44.400
I never said anything about I.
00:34:45.760 --> 00:34:46.239
Wow.
00:34:46.400 --> 00:34:52.159
That film is Warlock The Armageddon.
00:34:58.719 --> 00:35:03.360
Now, although Saiyans portrayed the same character, the son of Satan has returned.
00:35:06.239 --> 00:35:11.360
Anthony Hickox says, our film is a totally different story from the original Warlock.
00:35:11.440 --> 00:35:13.840
It's as though the original film didn't happen.
00:35:14.079 --> 00:35:14.480
Good.
00:35:14.639 --> 00:35:28.320
You can play some headcanon with the films, and you can kind of line them up to still be in the same universe, but they kind of approach it as though they are unrelated.
00:35:28.480 --> 00:35:31.199
It's just the same Warlock character in another film.
00:35:31.440 --> 00:35:33.760
Well, it's kind of like after Hellraiser 2.
00:35:33.920 --> 00:35:39.599
Speaking of Hellraiser 2, Hickox was the director, having done the Waxwork films.
00:35:39.679 --> 00:35:39.920
Yep.
00:35:40.079 --> 00:35:42.480
Go listen to our previous episodes on those.
00:35:42.719 --> 00:35:44.159
He's come up surprisingly a lot.
00:35:44.320 --> 00:35:50.159
He had done Hellraiser 3, again, abandoning the story from Hellraiser 1 and 2.
00:35:50.239 --> 00:35:50.639
Yep.
00:35:50.800 --> 00:35:54.960
And he did Sundown, which happens to be the last film that we just talked about.
00:35:55.199 --> 00:35:57.360
Did you see his other films that he did after this?
00:35:57.599 --> 00:36:00.159
Halloween H2O was one of his later ones.
00:36:00.320 --> 00:36:00.639
Yes.
00:36:00.880 --> 00:36:02.159
He just stuck with this.
00:36:02.480 --> 00:36:05.360
Well, he had a bit of a gap because he didn't have as many horror projects.
00:36:05.440 --> 00:36:11.199
He did some comedy and a few little dramas, but he did go back to the horror well, as did Hickocks.
00:36:11.440 --> 00:36:11.679
Yes.
00:36:11.920 --> 00:36:15.440
Going back to Tried and True, or at least previously tried.
00:36:15.840 --> 00:36:16.800
Well trodden.
00:36:17.039 --> 00:36:17.679
Yes, exactly.
00:36:18.000 --> 00:36:19.039
Wild Tony Hickkox.
00:36:19.280 --> 00:36:23.840
And it appears he was a journeyman horror director that was brought onto the project by the studio.
00:36:24.000 --> 00:36:27.840
Supposedly Frank Laloggia was originally intended as the director.
00:36:28.000 --> 00:36:33.920
He did, I think, Lady in White before this, but his ideas are apparently too expensive for the studio.
00:36:34.079 --> 00:36:38.159
They gave to Hickocks, who was able to shoot the whole film in 38 days.
00:36:38.480 --> 00:36:39.119
Jesus.
00:36:39.360 --> 00:36:51.199
Kevin Rock of Howling 6 fame at the time was one of the writers, along with Sam Bernard, who would go on to do a little film called Bloodsurf.
00:36:51.360 --> 00:36:52.639
Bloodsurfing.
00:36:54.239 --> 00:36:55.440
That's why we do it, babe.
00:36:55.519 --> 00:37:02.960
For the rush! Whoa! Ah, one of our favorite Saturday morning sci-fi originals, where it belongs.
00:37:03.199 --> 00:37:08.159
Uh eating lukewarm Chinese food as we uh tried to make our way through our hangover.
00:37:08.480 --> 00:37:09.119
Damn right.
00:37:09.280 --> 00:37:16.480
That was when we had just moved the furniture around so that we could create a basketball court marked by masking tape in the living room.
00:37:17.679 --> 00:37:19.360
Hey, you gotta put in the hoop time.
00:37:19.440 --> 00:37:20.800
Alright, you're not getting any better without it.
00:37:20.960 --> 00:37:22.800
Uh it's we gotta live our hoop dreams, man.
00:37:22.960 --> 00:37:25.519
Well, we gotta have our hang time and live our hoop dreams.
00:37:25.760 --> 00:37:27.119
Sometimes the air up there.
00:37:28.800 --> 00:37:29.840
So we open the film.
00:37:30.000 --> 00:37:35.440
Ancient times, and druids are gathered around an altar as a possessed woman is about to give birth.
00:37:35.599 --> 00:37:42.480
Through their magical stones and craft, they prevent the birth, only to be run off and slaughtered by unknown men on horseback.
00:37:42.880 --> 00:37:47.599
Those men steal some of the stones, as the surviving druids flee with a couple of them.
00:37:47.760 --> 00:37:49.199
We then jump to present day.
00:37:49.360 --> 00:37:55.840
A woman prepares for her date, but is interrupted when her purple stone necklace becomes magically turned on.
00:37:56.000 --> 00:37:58.079
Suddenly she is thrown onto the dinner table.
00:37:58.239 --> 00:38:03.199
Her eyes turn white like the previous girl in the past scene, and the moon is eclipsed.
00:38:03.360 --> 00:38:06.159
Her stomach grows large with evil portent.
00:38:06.400 --> 00:38:11.679
Her legs are thrust wide, and she gives birth to a ball of veiny flesh and withered tentacles.
00:38:12.000 --> 00:38:20.719
It pulsates, and when her little dog goes to investigate and lick it, the dog is captured by a tentacle, killed, and flung across the room.
00:38:23.280 --> 00:38:31.519
The flesh ball grows, and then black icker-covered Julian Sands rises up out of the putrid mass.
00:38:32.400 --> 00:38:47.199
We get uh a bit of a fun and disturbing, uh, slow chase as he calls for his mummy almost in a lustful way, while she tries to slide herself uh bloodily through her apartment away from him.
00:38:47.440 --> 00:38:54.960
She then locks herself in the bathroom, but we see his face arising in the skylight window above the door.
00:38:55.199 --> 00:39:03.440
Uh he begs for a kiss from his mummy, uh, then shrieks like a baby, blowing out the windows and her eardrums.
00:39:05.039 --> 00:39:06.800
Uh she dies from that.
00:39:06.960 --> 00:39:12.000
He then takes her body and puts it on the same table that she gave birth on.
00:39:12.239 --> 00:39:22.079
He plunges his hand into her neck, thus reanimating it and allowing the demon uh to then set up the plot of the film.
00:39:23.519 --> 00:39:30.639
The demon says he must get all of the stones that we saw in the previous scene and assemble them.
00:39:30.800 --> 00:39:39.039
And once that happens, a solar eclipse will uh occur, and he can bring forth the devil to then take over the world.
00:39:39.280 --> 00:39:42.639
But all must be done within six days.
00:39:43.599 --> 00:39:43.920
Okay.
00:39:45.360 --> 00:39:58.800
He tears off a map of flesh uh from her stomach, uh, that is uh formed into the outline of America, with a bloodline coursing its length, showing him the way to each stone.
00:39:58.960 --> 00:40:06.320
Her date that she was preparing for arrives, and we get a guest appearance from Zack Gallaghan, yes, of Anthony Hickcock's waxwork fame.
00:40:06.480 --> 00:40:06.880
There you go.
00:40:07.039 --> 00:40:09.119
Apparently a buddy who is doing him a favor.
00:40:09.519 --> 00:40:13.280
And the warlock sees him and admires his black attire.
00:40:13.519 --> 00:40:21.360
We then see the warlock emerge from the apartment, dressed all in Zat Gallagher's black suit, and he walks across a busy street.
00:40:21.519 --> 00:40:26.639
He encounters a belittling taxi driver who will end up providing carriage for his journey.
00:40:26.800 --> 00:40:41.840
Now, while this is occurring, we find our heroes to be a lovely high school girl Samantha, played by Paula Marshall, previously in Hellraiser 3 with Hickox, and you also might know her as playing Iris West from the 1990s The Flash TV show.
00:40:42.239 --> 00:40:43.360
That's right, yes.
00:40:43.679 --> 00:40:50.400
She is being chased by boys with an overprotective father and dreams of going to Berkeley for college.
00:40:50.639 --> 00:40:55.599
Her counterpart, Kenny, is played by Chris Young, who starred in PCU.
00:40:56.000 --> 00:40:59.119
He was the son opposite John Candy in The Great Outdoors.
00:40:59.280 --> 00:40:59.920
Whoa, that's interesting.
00:41:00.159 --> 00:41:03.920
And played a boy genius in previous episode Max Headroom.
00:41:04.159 --> 00:41:05.440
Wow, there's a lot of connections there.
00:41:06.000 --> 00:41:08.800
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the actor who played Iris?
00:41:09.280 --> 00:41:15.440
Is she not the same one who played in the TV show Cupid, starring Jeremy Piven, who was in PCU?
00:41:15.760 --> 00:41:17.199
Maybe I'm conflating some stuff.
00:41:17.840 --> 00:41:20.719
Yes, she is in Cupid with Jeremy Pivin.
00:41:20.960 --> 00:41:22.880
Boom! Damn, we're good at this.
00:41:23.519 --> 00:41:26.559
Skip wins, dispatch Ajax Pointless Trivia.
00:41:27.599 --> 00:41:29.840
I think we both racked up a lot of wins.
00:41:30.079 --> 00:41:32.400
I just won TV trivia this time.
00:41:33.440 --> 00:41:40.880
After hanging up Chris's acting tire, he went on to serve as senior vice president of the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab.
00:41:41.119 --> 00:41:50.800
And he now runs his own business that is leading the development and production of world-class AR, VR, gaming, live action, and animation entertainment.
00:41:51.039 --> 00:41:52.239
Which is fascinating.
00:41:52.480 --> 00:42:14.000
He plays our young and in-love protagonists, head in the clouds, hoping to escape the town filled with persecution for his quote, satanic family and father, and with his Jim Lee X-Men comic in his back pocket and Samantha's hand in his, wow, they are the Starcrest lovers of this film, even though that is against the preacher father's wishes.
00:42:14.159 --> 00:42:17.440
I think the X-Men overture will play a part in this film.
00:42:17.679 --> 00:42:18.320
You think?
00:42:18.719 --> 00:42:19.039
Yeah.
00:42:19.280 --> 00:42:28.719
Now, over the course of the film, we find that Kenny's father, played by Steve Kahn, the captain in the Lethal Weapon films, with his Druid cohorts played by R.G.
00:42:28.880 --> 00:42:34.000
Armstrong, the general at the beginning of Predator, or Pruneface from Dick Tracy.
00:42:34.239 --> 00:42:35.360
I've seen him in a bunch of stuff.
00:42:35.519 --> 00:42:37.440
This is actually his last film before he passed.
00:42:37.679 --> 00:42:39.039
What do you mean, the future?
00:42:39.280 --> 00:42:39.760
Oh, okay.
00:42:39.920 --> 00:42:47.679
And another Druid friend, Charles Hallahan, who plays Norris from The Thing, whose stomach becomes a huge mouth and his head pops off.
00:42:47.920 --> 00:42:50.559
You gotta be fucking kidding.
00:42:50.880 --> 00:42:51.519
Hell yes.
00:42:51.760 --> 00:42:56.800
So they all used to be a group with the preacher, who's played by Bruce Glover, otherwise played Mr.
00:42:56.960 --> 00:43:01.199
Wint from Diamonds Are Forever, one of the best Bond villains.
00:43:01.519 --> 00:43:02.079
Very much so.
00:43:02.239 --> 00:43:26.559
Now perhaps the preacher was disillusioned after his wife died, but he left the group and became preacher, but they have to end up getting the old band together because the druids and their magical powers are responsible for stopping the birth of the Antichrist, or Warlock, in this case, I don't know, and his opening a portal to hell, which will let loose the devil and hell on earth.
00:43:26.719 --> 00:43:31.199
They find out that this is happening, and they have six days to prepare to stop the warlock.
00:43:31.360 --> 00:43:42.320
Now they know they can't stop him, but he can be killed with the ceremonial magical knife in their possession, and they hold two of the last stones that the warlock needs, so he will be coming to them.
00:43:42.480 --> 00:43:46.239
But they have to prepare those destined to fight him, the kids.
00:43:46.400 --> 00:43:50.079
And to do that, to unlock their powers, they have to kill them.
00:43:50.559 --> 00:43:51.760
For reasons.
00:43:52.079 --> 00:43:52.800
For reasons.
00:43:53.119 --> 00:43:59.760
So Kenny's father decides to shoot him in the chest with a shotgun, which Samantha sees in the distance.
00:44:00.400 --> 00:44:14.639
Kenny is quickly brought back to life by healing potions, magics, and herbs, aka bad CGI, but this was an early movie to use a lot of CGI instead of practical effects, and we'll just kind of give it a pass for that.
00:44:14.880 --> 00:44:28.400
In doing so, Kenny's powers of psychokinesis are totally flicked on, along with the ability to talk to squirrels and birds, and better vibing with the natural world, as druids are wont to do.
00:44:28.719 --> 00:44:37.119
Samantha finds out about all of this, and to not let Kenny stand against the warlock alone, stabs herself in the chest with a kitchen knife.
00:44:37.280 --> 00:44:38.880
Isn't this the story of Elliot Smith?
00:44:39.039 --> 00:44:47.920
As her father looks on, but is then quickly also resurrected, and her own powers, similar to Kenny, though less explored, are engaged.
00:44:48.320 --> 00:44:51.840
Now they prepare as the signs of the coming battle emerge.
00:44:52.079 --> 00:44:59.519
Birds are falling from the sky, bugs are roiling across the Bible, you know, that sort of end-of-the-world nonsense.
00:44:59.679 --> 00:45:07.280
Which the town blames the Satan worshipping druids for, but are shooed away before the warlock fully arrives.
00:45:08.000 --> 00:45:10.320
Warlock is here.
00:45:10.719 --> 00:45:22.559
Witchcraft is seen as the devil's work, and he's actually a follower of the devil, but it's the druids who are seen as the bad guys and worshiping the devil.
00:45:22.960 --> 00:45:24.800
It's a funny inversion there, huh?
00:45:24.960 --> 00:45:25.440
Whoa.
00:45:25.599 --> 00:45:30.800
Now while the kids are activating their mutant genes, Warlock is traveling for stones.
00:45:31.199 --> 00:45:36.880
He gets one at a fashion show where a model and then the lead designer has it in her possession.
00:45:37.119 --> 00:45:42.000
She says that if he can prove he is a witch with his powers, she will give him the stone.
00:45:42.159 --> 00:45:52.880
Which he does by levitating with her, but once she gives him the stone, he lets her drop from high in the air and it crashes through the skylight, falling on the runway stage.
00:45:53.119 --> 00:46:09.920
We get more of these monkey paw-esque Wishmaster adjacent bargains for the other stones, even though we should say Warlock-esque, because both those movies came out years before the first Wishmaster film, and this sequel was the same year as Leprechaun.
00:46:10.079 --> 00:46:28.800
Warlock does not get its due, but he gets stones by trapping one owner in a carnival mirror Dark Dimension that the director in the commentary for this film compared to Tim Burton's Vision of Hell, which is fairly accurate, and turning one art collector into a piece of living flesh art statue.
00:46:29.119 --> 00:46:46.880
He also has a bit of gruesome fun as he picks up a hitchhiking prostitute, though he grows weary of her fussing and her trying to fix your hair, and thus rips it off her scalp, throws it in her lap so that she can see how it looks for herself, and then kicks her out of a moving car.
00:46:47.039 --> 00:46:51.599
Just like the first film, uh not exactly feminist.
00:46:51.920 --> 00:46:52.239
No.
00:46:52.480 --> 00:46:52.880
But fun.
00:46:53.119 --> 00:46:57.039
And I feel like this is getting into sort of Wishmaster 2 territory, you know what I mean?
00:46:57.280 --> 00:47:00.880
Yeah, but again, I mean this is years and years before Wishmaster even came out.
00:47:01.039 --> 00:47:01.360
That's true.
00:47:01.599 --> 00:47:05.360
So Wishmaster took this from Warlock, not the other way around.
00:47:05.599 --> 00:47:06.159
No, you're right.
00:47:06.239 --> 00:47:07.760
It's just so funny how parallel they are.
00:47:07.920 --> 00:47:08.159
Yeah.
00:47:08.239 --> 00:47:11.119
Now on his journey, the other druids aim to stop him.
00:47:11.280 --> 00:47:16.400
The thing actor tracks him and finds him in an elevator with seemingly the unaware warlock.
00:47:16.559 --> 00:47:21.280
He takes out the magic dagger, and as he's about to plunge it into his back, the door closes.
00:47:21.519 --> 00:47:32.719
When the elevator arrives for the next floor, a spotless warlock emerges with the dagger, and the elevator is a bloody mess, looking like a predator and Pinhead had a blood raven there.
00:47:33.280 --> 00:47:38.400
Another fun time is when the warlock's taxi needs gas.
00:47:38.719 --> 00:48:05.760
He stops and is talking to the witless gas attendant, who realizes that the warlock's driver is indeed dead, and RJ Armstrong uses his druid magic to stab the warlock, tapping a pen into a magic leaf, which, despite him not knowing if it works, is actually stabbing the warlock again and again, as the warlock spews a greenish black blood into a splatterfest mess.
00:48:06.079 --> 00:48:09.440
Once again, confrontation at the gas station.
00:48:10.000 --> 00:48:10.559
Exactly.
00:48:10.800 --> 00:48:12.079
I'm telling you, this is a thing.
00:48:12.320 --> 00:48:20.880
Now eventually the warlock arrives, kills RJ for the last stone after hacking his arms off with a hatchet, and is confronted by Kenny.
00:48:21.360 --> 00:48:32.880
After a small initial perche with his magical mutant druid powers, Kenny is defeated and exploded out of a building and lands impaled on a broken pole.
00:48:33.679 --> 00:48:42.239
Warlock toys with him, letting the father and preacher come up with their shotguns and blow the warlock away into our surrounding storefront.
00:48:42.480 --> 00:48:53.360
But Warlock Undaunted emerges and erupts from the top of the roof, moseyes down invisible stairs, and uses his hand as finger guns and blows the two older men away.
00:48:54.239 --> 00:48:57.519
Even blowing the smoke from his gunfingers.
00:48:57.840 --> 00:49:01.039
A reference that obviously an ancient warlock would understand.
00:49:01.280 --> 00:49:01.760
I know.
00:49:02.239 --> 00:49:09.119
In the first one, he doesn't make any of these type of references, but they lean into the tropes a bit harder in the second one.
00:49:09.920 --> 00:49:16.639
You know, abandoning kind of the unique superstitions and folklore that the first one was built around.
00:49:16.800 --> 00:49:26.320
Now it is after this that Samantha, who wants to protect the stone at all costs, as it is on the necklace around her neck, lures the warlock away, riding on her motorbike.
00:49:26.559 --> 00:49:28.960
Dad's last act is healing Kenny.
00:49:29.199 --> 00:49:35.679
Kenny arrives to fight the Warlock more right as the Warlock has defeated Samantha and taken the last stone.
00:49:35.840 --> 00:49:36.480
Oh no.
00:49:36.960 --> 00:49:47.920
Samantha is tied to the front of the truck with Tetsuo mechanical wires, while Kenny is slammed into and tied to a tree with the evil dead rape vines surrounding him.
00:49:48.079 --> 00:49:52.000
They are forced to watch as the warlock places the stones on the altar.
00:49:52.239 --> 00:49:57.679
They glow, they spin, and a dark beam of light shoots up into the sky.
00:49:57.920 --> 00:50:08.000
The sun is eclipped, and the altar begins to open, letting a CGI, the next generation alien reject Satan, begin to lift himself out of the hole.
00:50:08.239 --> 00:50:14.800
Now this is a precursor to about every single superhero trophy final scene we get nowadays.
00:50:14.880 --> 00:50:15.039
Yeah.
00:50:15.360 --> 00:50:22.239
With the great beaming light in the sky, and they have to stop whatever doodad is causing the end of the world.
00:50:22.559 --> 00:50:23.039
The Guffin.
00:50:23.280 --> 00:50:23.920
Indeed.
00:50:24.239 --> 00:50:30.880
But the kids are able to turn the tables and used their psychic ability to turn on the truck lights.
00:50:31.119 --> 00:50:33.440
Artificial sunlight, asshole.
00:50:34.000 --> 00:50:38.000
And it sends the devil back to hell and breaks the spell.
00:50:38.159 --> 00:50:39.360
But the movie isn't done.
00:50:39.519 --> 00:50:40.800
Warlock is now pissed.
00:50:40.960 --> 00:50:44.400
He has been defeated, but he is going to murder these children.
00:50:44.639 --> 00:50:51.440
He beats on Kenny and pulls out the dagger that was brought to kill him and is about to stab Kenny.
00:50:51.599 --> 00:50:58.000
They have a PK magic wizarding duel with the Flying Dagger, each willing it to kill the other.
00:50:58.239 --> 00:51:08.320
Kenny is about to succumb when Sam gets conscious again, and their combined heroic might sends the dagger into Warboy's chest.
00:51:08.639 --> 00:51:17.280
He then starts spurting more black blood, does a decent good melting effect, and turns into a skeleton which is swallowed by the earth.
00:51:17.440 --> 00:51:26.639
The kids are free, and they go to reclaim the stones, except for the last one, the purple birthing stone, which is on the ground where the warlock was buried.
00:51:26.800 --> 00:51:32.000
As Sam reaches for it, a skeletal hand springs up, snatches it, and sinks back into the earth.
00:51:32.239 --> 00:51:33.039
Oh, it's a dead idea.
00:51:33.360 --> 00:51:37.440
Decent final jump scare element and possible franchise continuance.
00:51:38.079 --> 00:51:40.800
Though it's never mentioned or dealt with ever again.
00:51:41.119 --> 00:51:44.960
Oh, you mean like Skeletor at the end credit scene of Masters of the Universe, the first one.
00:51:45.199 --> 00:51:48.239
I would say this is much more like the end of Carrie, perhaps.
00:51:49.199 --> 00:51:50.320
But it doesn't matter.
00:51:50.559 --> 00:51:50.880
No.
00:51:51.440 --> 00:51:55.440
Because there is only one more Warlock film.
00:51:55.679 --> 00:51:55.920
Yeah.
00:51:56.159 --> 00:51:57.199
Maybe one too many.
00:51:57.440 --> 00:51:59.280
Oh, definitely one too many.
00:51:59.440 --> 00:52:04.960
Warlock 3, The End of Innocence, a straight-to-video release from 1999.
00:52:05.280 --> 00:52:06.719
It was an erotic thriller.
00:52:07.119 --> 00:52:08.639
Well, there is nudity.
00:52:08.800 --> 00:52:11.679
There is some SM play.
00:52:11.840 --> 00:52:16.800
There's a couple in the film that are into uh kinky sex stuff in the late 90s.
00:52:17.039 --> 00:52:17.440
They're gonna die.
00:52:17.920 --> 00:52:21.519
Which means getting whipped uh as someone's chained to a chair.
00:52:21.840 --> 00:52:24.800
Isn't there an element of that in Hellraiser 3?
00:52:25.519 --> 00:52:27.440
Boy, that can't be a coincidence, right?
00:52:27.679 --> 00:52:30.320
I mean, it's the Hellraiser, so it's always SM stuff.
00:52:30.480 --> 00:52:32.800
Yeah, I mean it's the whole thing by nature is the SM stuff.
00:52:33.039 --> 00:52:33.280
Yeah.
00:52:33.440 --> 00:52:33.760
Yeah.
00:52:34.000 --> 00:52:35.119
That's the point.
00:52:35.519 --> 00:52:43.119
So Warlock 3, The End of Innocence, or the End of Watching these Warlock films, directed by Eric Kreezer.
00:52:43.679 --> 00:52:47.280
So it was Roberts, who has done a handful of films.
00:52:47.519 --> 00:52:50.239
He was brought in by the studio to make this.
00:52:50.400 --> 00:52:52.880
It was written by Pierce Milestone.
00:52:53.119 --> 00:52:54.559
I hope he didn't give himself that name.
00:52:54.800 --> 00:52:57.039
He had done one screenplay before this.
00:52:57.280 --> 00:52:58.480
Bruce Eisen.
00:52:59.760 --> 00:53:02.480
Bruce Eisen, who did a few things.
00:53:02.719 --> 00:53:07.760
He worked on uh Eve's Bayou as an additional crew, but man.
00:53:08.000 --> 00:53:14.719
He worked on the legal affairs for Return of the Living Dead and Legal Affairs for Leprechaun 3.
00:53:14.880 --> 00:53:17.119
It appears that he worked for TriMark.
00:53:17.280 --> 00:53:23.920
Ah in other things, and he maybe was pitched to write this and put pen to paper.
00:53:24.079 --> 00:53:26.079
Good for him for getting a paycheck, I suppose.
00:53:26.239 --> 00:53:27.039
Yeah, go for it.
00:53:27.199 --> 00:53:29.039
Bad for all of us who have seen the movie.
00:53:29.280 --> 00:53:35.440
Unfortunately, Julian Sands, though I guess it was open, he saw the script and did not want to do it.
00:53:35.679 --> 00:53:38.719
TriMark did not push any harder for him to be in the film.
00:53:38.880 --> 00:53:46.719
Rather, replacing him with Bruce Payne, who you might know from Highlander Endgame as the big bad there.
00:53:46.960 --> 00:53:48.639
Now you're talking our language.
00:53:49.360 --> 00:53:52.079
He was also the bad guy in Passenger 57.
00:53:52.719 --> 00:53:59.039
He also went on to well, he went on to star in Full Eclipse with Anthony Hickox again.
00:53:59.280 --> 00:54:01.360
A film we were definitely cover at some point.
00:54:01.440 --> 00:54:10.719
And you can't get out of the Hellraiser lane without Ashley Lawrence, who played Kirsty in both Hellraiser 1 and 2.
00:54:10.880 --> 00:54:11.519
There you go.
00:54:11.679 --> 00:54:16.559
She plays the main character of Chris in Warlock 3.
00:54:16.719 --> 00:54:18.480
She has very little to work with.
00:54:18.719 --> 00:54:19.679
This film.
00:54:20.239 --> 00:54:20.719
Ugh.
00:54:20.880 --> 00:54:21.199
Alright.
00:54:21.440 --> 00:54:21.920
Break down.
00:54:22.159 --> 00:54:25.360
I'm not going to go through the beats of this film because this film sucked.
00:54:25.440 --> 00:54:25.599
Yeah.
00:54:25.760 --> 00:54:27.119
And I hated watching it.
00:54:27.360 --> 00:54:32.800
I may have put it on one and a half speed to try to power through it, and it wasn't fast enough.
00:54:33.039 --> 00:54:36.000
Chris plays an artist in college.
00:54:36.320 --> 00:54:41.280
She is an orphan, and she has found that she has inherited a house.
00:54:41.519 --> 00:54:44.000
So she wants to go check the house out.
00:54:44.239 --> 00:54:46.400
She has a bunch of college friends.
00:54:46.559 --> 00:54:50.880
You have the stoner music guy who's in love with her.
00:54:51.119 --> 00:54:54.400
You have what would be a finance bro boyfriend.
00:54:54.559 --> 00:54:55.039
Ugh.
00:54:55.360 --> 00:55:01.199
You have a couple of sex fiend alternative kids.
00:55:01.760 --> 00:55:05.599
And one witchy girl who reads the tarot.
00:55:05.760 --> 00:55:06.079
Alright.
00:55:06.239 --> 00:55:19.360
They are all studying for finals, and Chris wants to go to the house to look to see if she can find any ideas about who she was, where she came from, the lineage that somehow brought her this house.
00:55:19.519 --> 00:55:22.800
She wants to go the weekend before finals for some reason.
00:55:22.960 --> 00:55:24.159
So she goes on her own.
00:55:24.320 --> 00:55:33.599
Of course, friends show up to keep her company and get picked off one by one when a mysterious stranger shows up to look at the house.
00:55:33.760 --> 00:55:36.559
Yes, this is Bruce Payne's warlock.
00:55:37.039 --> 00:55:45.119
It turns out he was a reincarnation of a warlock from I don't know, the 1700s?
00:55:45.920 --> 00:55:46.159
Okay.
00:55:46.400 --> 00:55:58.000
The one genealogist who comes by who knows things says Christie's great-great-grandmother wrote a letter which ends up trying to explain the warlock and how to stop the warlock.
00:55:58.159 --> 00:55:58.480
Okay.
00:55:58.719 --> 00:56:02.639
But he also says that it was written in the 1700s.
00:56:02.800 --> 00:56:16.239
So even if her great-grandmother and her grandmother and her mother all lived to be 100 years old before they even had a child, still would not add up to the time when Chris is alive.
00:56:16.639 --> 00:56:17.440
Doesn't make any sense.
00:56:17.599 --> 00:56:17.920
Nope.
00:56:18.079 --> 00:56:18.960
But who cares?
00:56:19.119 --> 00:56:20.639
Nothing in this film makes sense.
00:56:20.880 --> 00:56:24.320
It is the most generically shot, generically written.
00:56:24.480 --> 00:56:28.159
There is nothing interesting about any of the characters, any of the dialogue.
00:56:28.320 --> 00:56:42.719
Essentially, the warlock feels that he is bound spiritually to Chris, as her ancestor had her daughter kidnapped by the warlock, and then he imprisoned the warlock in the catacombs of this house.
00:56:42.960 --> 00:56:44.000
Most houses have those.
00:56:44.239 --> 00:56:46.000
To bind him to the house.
00:56:46.159 --> 00:56:50.079
And then it's up to Chris to defeat him in a similar way.
00:56:50.239 --> 00:56:51.599
Blah blah blah.
00:56:51.920 --> 00:57:07.280
All of her friends die by the warlock as he uses his conniving magics to put spells on them, either making them age or turning them into crystal or turning their sex stuff against them.
00:57:07.840 --> 00:57:08.320
Whatever.
00:57:08.480 --> 00:57:09.119
It's bad.
00:57:09.360 --> 00:57:11.920
It has nothing to do with the Warlock franchise.
00:57:12.079 --> 00:57:12.320
Right.
00:57:12.559 --> 00:57:20.400
Other than being produced by the company that did the second one after they bought the rights from the failed studio that collapsed in the first one.
00:57:20.639 --> 00:57:21.760
Ugh, god damn it.
00:57:21.920 --> 00:57:25.280
It's about the level of what Ginger Dead Man 2?
00:57:25.519 --> 00:57:26.639
It's that kind of.
00:57:26.880 --> 00:57:27.199
Yeah.
00:57:27.519 --> 00:57:34.480
It also gives you real Wishmaster 3 vibes, where they recast it, no one else is involved, the rules aren't the same.
00:57:34.800 --> 00:57:36.719
At least there's a sense of fun.
00:57:37.039 --> 00:57:43.599
Which I think is like allowed the Wishmaster franchise to have legs year after year, decade after decade.
00:57:43.760 --> 00:57:45.519
There's a certain fun to the kills.
00:57:45.679 --> 00:57:46.960
This has none of that.
00:57:47.199 --> 00:57:51.760
It's completely lifeless and joysuck to watch.
00:57:52.079 --> 00:57:52.400
I bet.
00:57:52.559 --> 00:57:57.519
Unfortunately, I own it because I have the box set of all three films.
00:57:57.679 --> 00:57:58.079
Got it.
00:57:58.320 --> 00:58:02.480
This has no connection to the other ones, and I would say avoid it.
00:58:02.639 --> 00:58:05.679
It is on Tubi, as are, I think, the other two.
00:58:05.920 --> 00:58:15.440
But if you happen to listen to this podcast, you find our descriptions, our ideas about the first Warlock films intriguing in the very least.
00:58:15.679 --> 00:58:16.480
Maybe a little fun.
00:58:16.559 --> 00:58:17.599
You want to check those out.
00:58:17.679 --> 00:58:20.320
I wholeheartedly recommend watching the first one.
00:58:20.559 --> 00:58:23.840
The second one, uh, it has some elements.
00:58:23.920 --> 00:58:29.760
You know, if you like Julian Sands' portrayal as the Warlock, he is still engaging.
00:58:30.000 --> 00:58:38.000
He's still fun in the second one, maybe a little more knowing of what he's doing and the tropes he's playing into.
00:58:38.159 --> 00:58:41.280
It's a little more 90s than the original one was.
00:58:41.440 --> 00:58:41.840
Yeah.
00:58:42.079 --> 00:58:51.119
And it's very much more sequely, but they do decide let's do superpowers and let's have what if the X-Men kids had to fight a warlock?
00:58:51.280 --> 00:58:54.800
You know, it has fun-ish elements there.
00:58:55.039 --> 00:58:56.800
It's not the worst thing in the world.
00:58:56.960 --> 00:58:59.039
It has some cool actors in it.
00:58:59.119 --> 00:59:01.360
But the third one is a complete skip.
00:59:01.440 --> 00:59:02.239
Hey, watch it.
00:59:02.480 --> 00:59:03.760
Do not even bother.
00:59:04.000 --> 00:59:05.199
I'm saving you.
00:59:05.440 --> 00:59:06.639
It's not a complete skip.
00:59:06.719 --> 00:59:07.440
I mean, come on.
00:59:07.599 --> 00:59:08.639
I'm a little better than that.
00:59:08.800 --> 00:59:09.920
It's as closest you can get.
00:59:10.719 --> 00:59:16.320
Yeah, that third one's kind of like it's kind of like uh Nightmare and Elmstory Dream Warriors thing where they introduce these other things.
00:59:16.400 --> 00:59:22.079
Or like uh one of those later Michael Myers movies where it's like, oh, there's a psychic kid who can predict the whatever.
00:59:22.320 --> 00:59:25.519
I don't know if I'm putting through how bad Warlock 3 is.
00:59:25.679 --> 00:59:30.639
Oh, I believe those all look like Oscar-winning achievements compared to Warlock 3.
00:59:30.960 --> 00:59:32.639
Well, considering the Oscars today, they could have been.
00:59:32.800 --> 00:59:34.000
Warlock 3 is really bad.
00:59:34.159 --> 00:59:35.920
And it was a real disappointment.
00:59:36.079 --> 00:59:47.039
I had avoided watching it until preparing for this episode, and I was saddened by how much of a death knell it was in the Warlock franchise.
00:59:47.199 --> 00:59:51.119
I think Warlock is a film franchise that could be done again.
00:59:51.280 --> 00:59:51.840
Oh yeah.
00:59:52.079 --> 01:00:05.840
I think you need the right charisma and the right actor in the lead role, but I think it has legs, uh, the the people out of time, the gothic nature, and the actual use of witchcraft in these ways.
01:00:06.000 --> 01:00:07.280
I think it could really work.
01:00:07.440 --> 01:00:15.679
You could do something cool with it, but unfortunately, Warlock 3 ran it into the ground, and I don't know if it's ever gonna have anything.
01:00:15.840 --> 01:00:19.119
Now, there were further adaptations of the warlock.
01:00:19.199 --> 01:00:22.960
The screenplay was adapted to novelization, which apparently is kind of cool.
01:00:23.119 --> 01:00:37.119
I only know that because I listened to all of the commentary with the director Steve Minor in the first one, along with a presenter who is very knowledgeable about the Warlock franchise and everything having to do with the Warlock movie.
01:00:37.360 --> 01:00:37.679
Awesome.
01:00:37.840 --> 01:00:43.440
And he talked about how the book was interesting and did some different things and was a worthy read.
01:00:43.599 --> 01:00:48.719
I don't know if he was just a super fan or if it's actually pretty cool, but they did make a novelization of it.
01:00:48.800 --> 01:00:54.400
They also did Lionsgate Entertainment and Blue Water Productions made a comic book in 2009.
01:00:54.559 --> 01:00:55.360
Yes, I heard about that.
01:00:55.599 --> 01:01:07.119
It was an original storyline, essentially the warlocks on mission to destroy a book which had imprisoned a group of his peers, but the company was unable to attain the rights to use Julian Sands' likeness.
01:01:07.360 --> 01:01:07.679
Oh.
01:01:08.159 --> 01:01:15.440
So it is a warlock character that looks adjacent to Julian Sands, but is not.
01:01:15.840 --> 01:01:18.559
I don't know, that's kind of hard to adjudicate in comic book form.
01:01:18.800 --> 01:01:23.599
I mean, if you're using footage of Ian Holm in Alien Romulus, I understand.
01:01:23.840 --> 01:01:24.880
But comic book?
01:01:24.960 --> 01:01:25.519
Like, come on.
01:01:25.679 --> 01:01:29.280
It's really easy to just make it not quite look like that, but you get the idea.
01:01:29.599 --> 01:01:30.000
That's odd.
01:01:30.159 --> 01:01:30.320
Yeah.
01:01:30.480 --> 01:01:33.119
Which is kind of what they did, but it sucks that it couldn't.
01:01:33.199 --> 01:01:34.320
Julian Sands deserves.
01:01:34.480 --> 01:01:35.679
Give him a fucking paycheck.
01:01:35.760 --> 01:01:36.000
Alright?
01:01:36.079 --> 01:01:37.280
Even if it's minimal.
01:01:37.679 --> 01:01:38.000
Seriously.
01:01:38.239 --> 01:01:38.480
You know?
01:01:38.719 --> 01:01:40.480
Give a residual for Christ's sake.
01:01:40.800 --> 01:01:45.519
Acclaim made a video game based on the film for Super NES and Sega Genesis in '95.
01:01:45.920 --> 01:01:46.000
Yeah.
01:01:46.079 --> 01:01:46.400
I have it.
01:01:46.480 --> 01:01:47.360
I'm gonna play it tonight.
01:01:47.519 --> 01:01:49.360
Oh yeah, I watched some of the video game.
01:01:49.519 --> 01:01:53.760
It's kind of like Redfern, but he has magical powers as well.
01:01:54.000 --> 01:01:54.639
Well, why not?
01:01:54.800 --> 01:02:00.800
So it's it kind of blends the druid magic powers and runestones from the second one.
01:02:00.960 --> 01:02:08.400
It's kind of a weird mix of the two disparate first two films for a video gameplay that looks kind of like a Castlevania ripoff.
01:02:08.559 --> 01:02:10.719
Yeah, it's definitely a Metroidvania of some sort.
01:02:11.039 --> 01:02:12.239
Yeah, which looks fun enough.
01:02:12.480 --> 01:02:14.559
My pitch is, you know, we had Freddie vs.
01:02:14.639 --> 01:02:15.599
Jason and Alien vs.
01:02:15.679 --> 01:02:20.559
Predator, but which were extremely disappointing, though they were big fanboy wet dreams back in the day.
01:02:20.639 --> 01:02:25.679
And then somebody back in the day made a fan edit video of Wishmaster versus Leprechaun.
01:02:26.079 --> 01:02:35.599
But I think we should do Warlock versus Halloween 3, where he has to fight the druids that are trying to kill all the children in America, the Silver Shamrock company.
01:02:35.920 --> 01:02:39.760
Can we have it as like every good X-Men versus Avengers, right?
01:02:39.840 --> 01:02:40.159
Mm-hmm.
01:02:40.400 --> 01:02:48.880
When something happens, they're set against each other, they fight for a bit, and they decide they need to come together to fight the major actual bad guy at the end.
01:02:49.280 --> 01:02:52.400
You just described every single superhero crossover fight ever.
01:02:52.639 --> 01:02:53.119
Exactly.
01:02:53.280 --> 01:03:01.679
So Warlock and the Druids, they start fighting each other, they realize, oh, we both want to kill kids and make the world evil.
01:03:01.840 --> 01:03:03.440
Let's team up and they just win.
01:03:03.599 --> 01:03:04.159
How about that?
01:03:04.320 --> 01:03:16.239
The way to do it correctly, like an actually good story, or at least passably good story, is to have Redfern come and confront the modern druids who are doing this stuff and being like, You guys have lost your way.
01:03:16.400 --> 01:03:18.000
These are the real evil we have to fight.
01:03:18.079 --> 01:03:26.159
You've become the evil that we set out to fight, and then so then he and the warlock have to team up to kill the druids in Halloween 3.
01:03:26.400 --> 01:03:26.639
Whoa.
01:03:26.960 --> 01:03:36.639
But then he has to kill the warlock at the end because the warlock in the last bit turns on him because he actually liked what the druids were doing and was helping them the whole time.
01:03:37.039 --> 01:03:41.039
Even though he was kicking them off one by one because he's, you know, sadistic warlock.
01:03:41.280 --> 01:03:41.599
Sure.
01:03:41.840 --> 01:03:52.880
Or it's that um they only had an uneasy alliance because it temporarily fit both of their machinations, the uh Redfern and the Warlock, against the Druids.
01:03:53.039 --> 01:03:54.320
And then when they kill the modern German.
01:03:56.559 --> 01:03:57.039
Exactly, yes.
01:03:57.199 --> 01:04:11.039
Then when they finally kill the Druids from Halloween 3, he's like, Well, now that those assholes are out of the way, I'm now the warlock, and I now I can enact my thing, and he's like, We teamed up to defeat this thing, and he's like, I only did that because they were in my way, they were my rivals, or essentially.
01:04:11.199 --> 01:04:13.679
Or they were blasphemers of our faith or whatever.
01:04:13.920 --> 01:04:15.360
Something in that vein.
01:04:15.599 --> 01:04:16.960
Let's pitch this.
01:04:19.039 --> 01:04:19.760
I'm in favor.
01:04:20.159 --> 01:04:31.519
Before we wrap up, a few funny things I was noticing while I was watching the first warlock on TV while we were doing this on Silent, and the credits were playing some fun anecdotes from the credits to just a couple.
01:04:31.679 --> 01:04:35.199
The farmer of that weird red barn that stuck out like a sore thumb.
01:04:35.440 --> 01:04:35.599
Yeah.
01:04:35.840 --> 01:04:37.440
The actor's name is Harry Johnson.
01:04:38.079 --> 01:04:40.079
Ooh, that's a tough name to live your life with.
01:04:40.320 --> 01:04:40.880
It really is.
01:04:41.039 --> 01:04:47.360
Especially since he's obviously part of the actor's This is my brand from now on, Harry Johnson.
01:04:47.599 --> 01:04:49.440
Do you think people were hard on Johnson?
01:04:49.920 --> 01:04:51.920
To be honest, I think they were a little flaccid on him.
01:04:52.079 --> 01:04:54.079
I think that he didn't really get a lot of work.
01:04:54.320 --> 01:04:55.840
You mean not a lot of jobs?
01:04:56.079 --> 01:04:56.800
Not very many.
01:04:56.960 --> 01:04:58.079
Just blown in the wind, you know.
01:04:58.400 --> 01:04:59.039
Been there, Mr.
01:04:59.119 --> 01:04:59.679
Johnson.
01:05:00.159 --> 01:05:03.519
So then the gas station attendant to whom we referred earlier.
01:05:03.679 --> 01:05:06.320
I mean, his real name as an actor is Robert Paulson.
01:05:06.480 --> 01:05:07.440
Wait, what was his name?
01:05:07.599 --> 01:05:09.599
His name was Robert Paulson.
01:05:12.079 --> 01:05:13.840
I thought that was really funny.
01:05:14.000 --> 01:05:20.239
And then the flight attendant, her name was Meta King, which is awesome.
01:05:20.480 --> 01:05:21.039
Meta.
01:05:21.519 --> 01:05:22.719
Meta King.
01:05:22.880 --> 01:05:24.159
That is an awesome name.
01:05:24.400 --> 01:05:25.199
Pretty badass.
01:05:25.360 --> 01:05:29.599
Oh, and also the second assistant director on the film was Frank Capra III.
01:05:29.920 --> 01:05:30.639
I saw that.
01:05:30.800 --> 01:05:31.599
Interesting, huh?
01:05:31.760 --> 01:05:32.000
Yeah.
01:05:32.239 --> 01:05:33.599
How far we've fallen.
01:05:35.440 --> 01:05:37.440
Warlock is a Nepo production.
01:05:37.760 --> 01:05:41.679
In the same way that Hank Williams III is somehow related to Hank Williams.
01:05:41.920 --> 01:05:44.719
It's like multiplicity, like the copy of a copy of a copy.
01:05:44.960 --> 01:05:46.639
Yeah, it degrades over time.
01:05:46.800 --> 01:05:49.840
They call it in Star Trek Replicative Failure.
01:05:50.000 --> 01:05:51.679
It just keeps getting worse and worse.
01:05:52.000 --> 01:05:52.480
Ah, yeah.
01:05:52.639 --> 01:05:55.039
I will end this episode on one sour note.
01:05:55.199 --> 01:05:55.360
Okay.
01:05:55.679 --> 01:05:56.880
I feel like I should mention it.
01:05:57.039 --> 01:05:59.280
In 1995, in La Range.
01:06:00.639 --> 01:06:08.320
One, a 14-year-old Sandy Charles told police that he had been contemplating suicide, but a spirit told him to kill someone else.
01:06:08.480 --> 01:06:15.519
So on July 8th, Charles and an unnamed eight-year-old accomplice murdered seven-year-old Jonathan Timpson.
01:06:16.000 --> 01:06:28.239
And court lawyers on Charles' behalf argued that he had become obsessed with the film Warlock and that the murder was based in part on occult concepts from the film.
01:06:29.360 --> 01:06:42.639
Unfortunately, this case brought the issue of violence in movies to the forefront in Charles' native Canada and supposedly influenced the country's decision to enable parents to use the V-Chip to censor violence in cable television.
01:06:43.199 --> 01:06:44.400
They don't make those anymore, do they?
01:06:44.719 --> 01:06:47.599
I don't think they do, but I can't be sure.
01:06:48.000 --> 01:06:48.559
So stupid.
01:06:50.000 --> 01:06:58.400
Charles was put on trial as an adult, although his accomplice, identified in court only by the initial M, was not charged.
01:06:58.559 --> 01:07:02.639
In August of 96, Charles was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
01:07:02.880 --> 01:07:03.119
Whoa.
01:07:03.360 --> 01:07:20.400
And following a trial, he went on to reside in a high security regional psychiatric center in Saskatoon, and then was briefly relocated to a Saskatchewan hospital in July and June 2013, but then was transferred back to the RPC facility that September.
01:07:20.639 --> 01:07:29.039
So that is a sad legacy that did have Warlock's name in the news for a bit.
01:07:29.360 --> 01:07:29.920
Yeah, I mean.
01:07:30.159 --> 01:07:38.960
But I felt that it was necessary to mention in the totality of the Warlock franchise and its longer legacy in and out of film.
01:07:39.360 --> 01:07:50.239
Yeah, but it's right up there with try to impress Jody Foster by shooting the president, a la taxi driver, or the Slender Man killing here in the States.
01:07:50.719 --> 01:07:51.760
Was that here in Missouri?
01:07:51.920 --> 01:07:52.320
Yeah, yeah.
01:07:52.480 --> 01:07:53.519
That might have been a Missouri case.
01:07:55.840 --> 01:07:56.159
Look into that.
01:07:56.320 --> 01:07:56.480
Yeah.
01:07:56.639 --> 01:07:57.519
But it's the same thing.
01:07:57.599 --> 01:08:03.519
It's just like somebody that attaches themselves to something and then all of a sudden it's that's the cause of it.
01:08:03.599 --> 01:08:05.039
It's that night trap bullshit.
01:08:05.119 --> 01:08:05.519
Get out of it.
01:08:05.679 --> 01:08:06.559
Get the fuck out of here.
01:08:06.880 --> 01:08:07.920
It has nothing to do with it.
01:08:08.079 --> 01:08:08.400
Yeah.
01:08:08.880 --> 01:08:12.000
No, and he could have said leprechaun or critters.
01:08:12.320 --> 01:08:12.880
That just happens to be.
01:08:13.039 --> 01:08:14.000
Could have been his dentist.
01:08:14.079 --> 01:08:14.880
It doesn't matter.
01:08:15.039 --> 01:08:15.440
Yeah.
01:08:15.760 --> 01:08:17.119
Could have been the movie The Dentist.
01:08:17.439 --> 01:08:19.439
It could have been the dentist from Little Chapel Horrors.
01:08:19.840 --> 01:08:21.119
It's the same thing.
01:08:21.600 --> 01:08:23.760
What is it, Skeet Rollerich says in Scream?
01:08:23.920 --> 01:08:24.960
Don't you blame the movies?
01:08:25.119 --> 01:08:28.399
Movies don't create psychos, movies just make psychos more creative.
01:08:29.840 --> 01:08:31.359
It's a great scene.
01:08:32.079 --> 01:08:33.199
One of his best roles, actually.
01:08:33.279 --> 01:08:33.600
Yeah.
01:08:34.079 --> 01:08:34.800
A great movie.
01:08:35.039 --> 01:08:35.600
It is very good.
01:08:37.760 --> 01:08:39.920
Who will come up again soon?
01:08:42.000 --> 01:08:42.880
It's true.
01:08:43.119 --> 01:08:45.920
And hopefully for you, Warlock will come up again soon.
01:08:46.079 --> 01:08:50.479
Because I think it is a film that deserves some plaudits.
01:08:50.880 --> 01:08:51.920
Especially the first one.
01:08:52.000 --> 01:08:55.039
I think Julian Sands is a great movie villain.
01:08:55.279 --> 01:08:58.079
He's super cool in a lot of other things.
01:08:58.239 --> 01:09:13.680
I would totally suggest checking out just about anything with Julian Sands, especially super weird movies like Boxing Helena, where he's a surgeon who is obsessed with a woman and decides that he wants to keep her, so he decides he's going to cut off her limbs.
01:09:13.920 --> 01:09:14.640
Messed up.
01:09:14.720 --> 01:09:23.199
And a fact, when they were casting the interview with the vampire film, Anne Bryce wanted Lestat to be played by Julian Sands.
01:09:23.359 --> 01:09:24.479
I'm down with that.
01:09:25.359 --> 01:09:26.560
Yes, that was her.
01:09:26.720 --> 01:09:38.239
She was overruled by the went in a different direction with Tom Cruise, but in her mind, Julian Sands was Lestat, and he had that presence.
01:09:38.399 --> 01:09:41.359
Unfortunately, Julian Sands has passed away.
01:09:41.680 --> 01:09:42.960
He is no longer with us.
01:09:43.119 --> 01:09:44.319
He was awesome.
01:09:44.560 --> 01:09:46.239
He deserves more love.
01:09:46.640 --> 01:09:50.560
He was super cool, super interesting, and a great character in Warlock.
01:09:50.640 --> 01:10:13.760
And I suggest you guys at least check out the first one for an underseen gem that I think was a precursor to a lot of stuff that was done after it, like Witchmaster, Leprechaun, things like that, but with actual cool gothic undertones and weird superstitions and some cool lore that just isn't in those other films.
01:10:14.000 --> 01:10:14.399
It's true.
01:10:14.560 --> 01:10:25.760
I think it also led to certain things, like not entirely, but I think there were threads of it that lead into things later that would come up, like the craft, and then that whole spate of movies in the 90s.
01:10:25.920 --> 01:10:29.279
There was young adult teen witchcraft things.
01:10:29.760 --> 01:10:35.279
There were surprisingly a lot of those between the 90s and the mid-2010s.
01:10:35.439 --> 01:10:38.560
And I think Witchmaster does have a little bit of inspiration in there.
01:10:38.640 --> 01:10:40.880
There's a little thread, I think, that goes through there.
01:10:41.039 --> 01:10:43.199
Not Witchmaster, I'm sorry, Warlock.
01:10:43.920 --> 01:10:45.439
Yeah, Witchmaster, I don't know.
01:10:45.600 --> 01:10:46.399
That would be weird if it did.
01:10:46.560 --> 01:10:49.520
But the Warlock movies, I think, definitely has a thread through there.
01:10:50.960 --> 01:10:58.640
Yeah, I think Warlock helped spark some of that witchcraft in films that really exploded after its time.
01:10:58.720 --> 01:10:59.760
So not demonizing all.
01:11:01.199 --> 01:11:03.600
Well, that's the whole thing about witches is demonizing women.
01:11:03.760 --> 01:11:10.000
And when they would demonize warlocks, it was because they were usually just a different religion.
01:11:10.239 --> 01:11:25.039
Which is, I think one of the interesting touches on this film is that usually the demonization of what they called witches and warlocks were just like druid clerics, normally, and or just lonely women who lived out in the woods.
01:11:25.359 --> 01:11:31.359
And so having a druid being the protagonist is very interesting.
01:11:31.520 --> 01:11:37.279
I think that is something that really sets it apart from a lot of lore and does make it a very unique choice.
01:11:40.720 --> 01:11:41.359
Yeah, yeah.
01:11:41.520 --> 01:11:43.920
And which is why I think it deserved to be spoken about.
01:11:44.239 --> 01:11:45.840
And that's why we put this episode on.
01:11:46.000 --> 01:11:46.239
Absolutely.
01:11:46.399 --> 01:11:47.920
And again, we hope that you have enjoyed.
01:11:48.079 --> 01:11:56.159
We've hoped that we have put a spell on you to check out Warlock on this most frightful of holidays.
01:11:56.399 --> 01:12:03.199
If you happen to enjoy this episode or any of the other multitude of episodes we put on, please like, share, subscribe.
01:12:03.439 --> 01:12:08.720
If you wouldn't mind rating us five booby eyeballs.
01:12:12.000 --> 01:12:13.439
Now patented by Apple.
01:12:13.520 --> 01:12:14.720
I'm getting sued as we speak.
01:12:14.960 --> 01:12:15.199
Yes.
01:12:15.359 --> 01:12:15.840
Oh shit.
01:12:15.920 --> 01:12:17.199
We shouldn't have brought up the eyebreasts.
01:12:17.359 --> 01:12:18.079
Damn it.
01:12:19.760 --> 01:12:22.479
And it's you have to pay a premium for it, too.
01:12:22.880 --> 01:12:23.279
I know.
01:12:23.359 --> 01:12:26.079
If you want them to stay inflated, you've got to get that subscription.
01:12:26.159 --> 01:12:29.840
You got to keep upping and yeah, upgrading.
01:12:30.079 --> 01:12:32.319
We don't need to upgrade this podcast.
01:12:32.479 --> 01:12:35.359
There's certainly nothing better than us, right?
01:12:35.520 --> 01:12:41.039
But if you wouldn't mind like, sharing, subscribing, please send us to anybody that you think might be interested.
01:12:41.199 --> 01:12:43.760
If you do enjoy us, please come back to check us out.
01:12:43.920 --> 01:12:46.000
Please go to social media and chat with us.
01:12:46.159 --> 01:12:52.640
We'd love to hear your thoughts on Warlock, unless you want to talk about Warlock 3 and how good it is, because then I don't give a damn what you say because it's bad.
01:12:52.800 --> 01:12:54.399
It's legitimately bad, and I hate it.
01:12:54.800 --> 01:12:55.840
Your argument isn't valid.
01:12:56.079 --> 01:12:58.159
It made me sad about film.
01:12:58.720 --> 01:13:00.399
Yeah, it's pretty bad.
01:13:00.880 --> 01:13:02.800
I don't think I've gotten through the whole thing either.
01:13:02.960 --> 01:13:05.920
Uh yeah, oh yeah, it's not worth it.
01:13:06.079 --> 01:13:06.319
No.
01:13:06.640 --> 01:13:21.119
But, folks, until an evil warlock comes from the past, decides to make out with you bite your tongue off so that he can get the devil's Bible and end all of creation by spelling Mr.
01:13:21.279 --> 01:13:24.880
Mixelplex's name backwards along with Rumpel Stiltskin.
01:13:25.199 --> 01:13:25.920
Skip.
01:13:26.079 --> 01:13:26.880
What should they do?
01:13:27.119 --> 01:13:29.039
They should probably find John Constantine.
01:13:29.199 --> 01:13:31.680
That'd be my first piece of advice.
01:13:32.399 --> 01:13:34.560
I'm John Constantine, asshole.
01:13:36.159 --> 01:13:39.119
I'm John Constantine's American cousin.
01:13:39.600 --> 01:13:41.840
Which is the play that's Johnny Constantine.
01:13:42.079 --> 01:13:45.359
Which is yeah, which was the play that Lincoln was shot at, by the way.
01:13:45.680 --> 01:13:48.319
Johnny Constantine, my American cousin.
01:13:50.560 --> 01:13:52.079
Mary Todd loved it.
01:13:54.720 --> 01:13:57.279
Other than the movie Constantine, how was the play, Mrs.
01:13:57.359 --> 01:13:57.920
Lincoln?
01:13:58.159 --> 01:14:02.079
So other than that, they should probably clean up after themselves to some sort of reasonable degree.
01:14:02.239 --> 01:14:14.960
Make sure that they paid their tabs, that they have tipped their wait staff, their KJs, their DJs, anybody who works slave wage labor in this country, which is, by the way, most of us.
01:14:15.359 --> 01:14:21.199
Please reach out and tip them in all of the services that they perform.
01:14:21.439 --> 01:14:25.119
Don't forget to support your local comic shops and retailers.
01:14:25.279 --> 01:14:31.520
And also, as a side note, Jake and I would like to say no matter where you go, there you are.
01:14:31.840 --> 01:14:33.520
Please go away.
