In this deeply emotional and eye-opening episode of Beyond the Headlights, we’re joined by a very special guest—Jennifer’s niece, Ella. As someone incredibly close to Grace, Jennifer’s daughter who tragically passed away in a car crash, Ella brings a unique perspective on grief, healing, and responsibility. What makes this conversation even more powerful is that Ella also knew one of the individuals in the other vehicle involved in the crash.
Navigating grief from both sides of tragedy, she opens up about how young people process loss differently than adults, and how she continues to honor Grace’s memory in her own way. Ella shares the heartbreak of losing Grace just minutes before her own birthday, and the emotional weight that moment still carries.
Throughout the conversation, Ella reflects on how teenagers today face growing pressures around partying, drinking, and risky behavior. Despite peers trying to minimize the dangers of drinking and driving—suggesting it’s safe if you’re close to home or confident behind the wheel—Ella stands firm in her belief that no excuse makes it okay. She speaks with clarity and courage about the lasting consequences of a single decision, and how Grace’s story has become a part of her mission to speak out against DUI culture.
This episode is a powerful reminder of how grief is carried differently across generations, but how love, memory, and conviction can bring us together. Ella’s voice will stay with you long after the episode ends.
We also announce the premiere of our upcoming Beyond the Headlights documentary, happening August 6 at Marcus Theatre in Dardenne Prairie, Missouri. This is more than a film—it’s a movement built on love, loss, and the pursuit of justice.
