Breaking the Silence: Sandy Phillips Kirkham on Clergy Abuse, Healing, and Finding Your Voice

A place meant to offer safety, trust, and spiritual guidance can sometimes become the setting for profound harm. For survivors of clergy abuse, the journey toward healing can involve years of silence, confusion, shame, and questions that are difficult to share.

In this deeply personal episode of Beyond the Draft, host Imma welcomes Sandy Phillips Kirkham, author, speaker, and advocate for survivors of clergy abuse, to discuss her experience, the lasting effects of abuse, and the courage it takes to reclaim one's voice.

Sandy experienced abuse by her church's youth minister when she was a teenager. It took decades for her to speak openly about what happened. Today, she uses her story to raise awareness, help people recognize manipulative behaviors, and remind survivors that the abuse was not their fault.

Together, we explore the dynamics of grooming, gaslighting, guilt, and control, as well as the reasons survivors may struggle to come forward. Sandy also reflects on writing about a deeply personal experience, the role of support in healing, and the importance of helping survivors move toward a future that is not defined by what happened to them.

This is a conversation about truth, accountability, compassion, and the possibility of healing after profound betrayal.

In this episode, we explore:

- Sandy's experience of clergy abuse and its lasting impact.

- Why survivors may wait years or decades before speaking out.

- How grooming, gaslighting, and manipulation can undermine trust and self-belief.

- Why survivors may feel guilt or blame themselves for the abuse.
