WEBVTT
00:00.111 --> 00:09.557
[SPEAKER_00]: It's safe to say us humans are obsessed with constructing some massive megastructures, but big and impressive as these feats of engineering ingenuity are.
00:09.937 --> 00:12.939
[SPEAKER_00]: Have you ever considered how they got there in the first place?
00:13.519 --> 00:21.084
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, even more impressive than the size of some structures are the tremendous transport operations that help them get from A to B.
00:22.242 --> 00:30.987
[SPEAKER_00]: from towing towering oil platforms to road ready space shuttles, get your seat belt strapped, as we take a look at the largest things ever moved.
00:43.722 --> 00:52.269
[SPEAKER_00]: At 1,549 feet tall, the troll A platform found in the middle of the North Sea is a super-soring structure.
00:52.789 --> 01:02.677
[SPEAKER_00]: In all, this platform used to extract natural gas from the troll gas field measures around the height of the Central Park Tower, the 15th tallest building in the world.
01:03.342 --> 01:12.984
[SPEAKER_00]: Not that you'd be able to tell that from looking at it though, you see this platform is mostly made up of four legs descending down nearly 1,000 feet to the sea floor.
01:13.504 --> 01:17.325
[SPEAKER_00]: The question is, how did something so big end up here?
01:18.026 --> 01:23.767
[SPEAKER_00]: This behemoth was constructed in a dock near the village of Vats on the western coast of Norway.
01:24.954 --> 01:30.179
[SPEAKER_00]: After the legs had finished construction, they were filled with water until they were virtually submerged.
01:30.639 --> 01:34.683
[SPEAKER_00]: Following this engineer's towed troll-A's platform over the legs.
01:35.384 --> 01:43.411
[SPEAKER_00]: Once the platform was floating above the legs, the water was pumped out of the legs, gradually raising them out of the water and closer to the platform overhead.
01:44.332 --> 01:50.098
[SPEAKER_00]: After all that, by May 1995, troll-A was finally ready for its journey.
01:50.977 --> 02:00.120
[SPEAKER_00]: Now those involved had the small task of getting the 1.2 million tons structure from vats to the troll gas field over 120 miles away.
02:01.000 --> 02:05.322
[SPEAKER_00]: Ten tugboats had the unenviable task of towing the towering structure.
02:05.942 --> 02:14.725
[SPEAKER_00]: Due to the sheer size of the operation, the tugboats which were generating 130,000 horsepower couldn't travel faster than two miles per hour.
02:16.234 --> 02:21.716
[SPEAKER_00]: As a result, it took the boats no less than seven days until they finally reached their destination.
02:22.236 --> 02:36.761
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, trolley's legs were once again filled with water until they were resting on the sea bed nearly 1,000 feet down, where they were then fixed in place by attaching suction buckets to the base of the structure, which gripped the sea floor by a permanent vacuum seal.
02:37.341 --> 02:43.543
[SPEAKER_00]: With the anchors in place, water was pumped out of the legs once more, finally finishing this enormous operation.
02:44.223 --> 02:46.645
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, that's what you call, a long haul.
02:47.146 --> 02:52.211
[SPEAKER_00]: When you think of space shuttles, you probably conjure up images of rockets whizzing through orbit.
02:52.511 --> 02:55.654
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's not always how these vehicles get from A to B.
02:56.114 --> 02:57.095
[SPEAKER_00]: Take the endeavor.
02:57.536 --> 03:07.005
[SPEAKER_00]: From 1992 to 2011, the shuttle completed 25 missions, visiting faraway locations like the International Space Station and the Hubble Space Telescope.
03:07.778 --> 03:11.440
[SPEAKER_00]: Yet the Endeavor's final journey wasn't quite so meteoric.
03:12.080 --> 03:19.863
[SPEAKER_00]: Rather than paying one last visit to space, this rocket had to make the nine-mile journey from LAX Airport to the California Science Center.
03:21.514 --> 03:24.236
[SPEAKER_00]: sound simpler than flying into space, right?
03:24.596 --> 03:33.623
[SPEAKER_00]: However, weighing in at 86 tons, the shuttle was too heavy for a helicopter, plus it couldn't be dismantled without causing permanent damage to the vehicle.
03:34.124 --> 03:41.369
[SPEAKER_00]: So the California Science Center made the decision to shell out $10 million to transport the shuttle overland.
03:41.950 --> 03:44.372
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, the space shuttle was hitting the road.
03:45.170 --> 03:53.715
[SPEAKER_00]: That came with another problem though, at 122 feet long and 78 feet wide, the endeavor wasn't exactly road-ready.
03:55.376 --> 04:02.820
[SPEAKER_00]: Being so long and wide, there are a whole host of paths in Los Angeles that the space shuttle could never realistically travel through.
04:03.460 --> 04:09.544
[SPEAKER_00]: Eventually a 12-mile path was settled upon, with the endeavor taking off at midnight on October 11, 2012.
04:11.845 --> 04:21.188
[SPEAKER_00]: as well as choosing a route that avoided as many traffic signals and buildings as possible, 400 trees were chopped down to provide clearance for the old orbiter.
04:21.668 --> 04:38.793
[SPEAKER_00]: For its ride, the 86-ton shuttle was loaded on top of four self-propelled modular trailers, or SPMTs for short, these multi-axle computer-controlled vehicles allowed precise maneuverability and stability while moving the shuttle through such a busy route.
04:39.633 --> 04:49.323
[SPEAKER_00]: In all, it took two days to transport the orbiter to its new base at the California Science Center, and to think this shuttle traveled over 17,000 miles per hour in space.
04:51.613 --> 05:01.623
[SPEAKER_00]: Still, the effort to lug a literal 122-foot-long space shuttle through the streets of Los Angeles makes this one of the world's most mind-blowing transportation feeds.
05:01.943 --> 05:08.229
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not just enormous inanimate objects like space shuttles and oil platforms that have been part of Mega Moves.
05:08.729 --> 05:16.237
[SPEAKER_00]: Back in January 1997, a weak old female gray whale was found stranded on the coast of Southern California.
05:16.777 --> 05:22.638
[SPEAKER_00]: To save the critter, it was decided she'd be brought in to SeaWorld San Diego to undergo rehabilitation.
05:23.539 --> 05:34.721
[SPEAKER_00]: A crowd of seagoers hoisted the 14-foot-long 1,670-pound heavy, young whale onto a 24-foot truck, constantly dousing her in water to keep her hydrated.
05:36.082 --> 05:41.663
[SPEAKER_00]: Following a lengthy 140-mile journey, the creature finally reached SeaWorld San Diego.
05:42.713 --> 05:48.575
[SPEAKER_00]: After a year under SeaWorld San Diego's care, the whale which had been named J.J. recovered well.
05:49.095 --> 05:58.399
[SPEAKER_00]: Incredibly, she'd grown to 30 feet and managed to pack on 9 tons of weight, delighted as her carers must have been at left them in a sticky situation.
05:59.959 --> 06:03.161
[SPEAKER_00]: The plan was always to release J.J. after she recovered.
06:03.761 --> 06:08.803
[SPEAKER_00]: But how do you go about transporting a living being that's close and length and weight to a school bus?
06:09.563 --> 06:18.585
[SPEAKER_00]: First up, J.J. was scooped up from her tank in a custom-made sling, lifted by crane and placed into a 40-foot water-filled foam-patted trailer.
06:19.025 --> 06:22.625
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, a truck pulled the trailer from SeaWorld to the nearby harbor.
06:23.065 --> 06:29.627
[SPEAKER_00]: Then J.J. was transferred once more this time onto the 180-foot buoy tender U.S.C.G.C.
06:29.687 --> 06:30.287
[SPEAKER_00]: Connofer.
06:30.787 --> 06:37.388
[SPEAKER_00]: That vessel then sailed her out into the waters of the Pacific before her stretcher was lowered down into the waves below.
06:38.505 --> 06:44.515
[SPEAKER_00]: Once back in the ocean, J.J. took a big breath before diving down and disappearing into the dark depths.
06:44.976 --> 06:48.361
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, who knew transportation efforts could make you teary-eyed?
06:49.002 --> 06:51.687
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I mean, let's see what mammoth move is up next.
06:53.025 --> 06:59.028
[SPEAKER_00]: In 2017, McLaren engineering group embarked on their own trepidacious transport mission.
06:59.528 --> 07:05.031
[SPEAKER_00]: They were tasked with moving a heat recovery steam generator or HRSG for short.
07:05.611 --> 07:11.173
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a pretty important piece of kit and power plants used to capture waste heat from gas turbines.
07:11.714 --> 07:17.856
[SPEAKER_00]: The generator McLaren moved was a neck-breaking 130 feet tall and weighed some 4,000 tons.
07:19.177 --> 07:26.159
[SPEAKER_00]: Essentially, this cargo was close in height to the Arctatriomp and around as heavy as 70 standard American homes.
07:26.820 --> 07:39.164
[SPEAKER_00]: Wolf On top of that McLaren engineering group had to somehow transport this thing down 130 miles, from Ravenna, New York to a power plant and soar in New Jersey.
07:40.084 --> 07:45.246
[SPEAKER_00]: Unsurprisingly, it was ruled that the colossal cargo was too tall to make the trip on land,
07:45.926 --> 07:59.911
[SPEAKER_00]: Instead, it was decided the best route would be down the Hudson River, so a fleet of five self-propelled modular trailers delivered the HRSG onto a 400 foot long barge which would be towed by three tugboats.
08:00.511 --> 08:10.434
[SPEAKER_00]: Fortunately, the HRSG was just small enough to allow the barge to sail just below bridges on route with some offering as little as nine feet of clearance.
08:10.974 --> 08:18.420
[SPEAKER_00]: So stupendously large was this shipment, the barge even beamed red and white marker lights to alert small aircrafts of its presence.
08:19.120 --> 08:28.848
[SPEAKER_00]: Incredibly though, after 36 hours on the water, traveling at a snail-like 5 miles per hour, the humongous unit reached its new home at Soar.
08:30.573 --> 08:33.455
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, that's one monumental moving mission.
08:33.835 --> 08:44.181
[SPEAKER_00]: Whether it's the Empire State Building, one World Trade Center, or the Statue of Liberty, New York has some of the world's most recognizable attractions dominating its skyline.
08:44.601 --> 08:51.965
[SPEAKER_00]: But while the Empire State Building and one World Trade Center were constructed in the Big Apple, the same can't be said for Lady Liberty.
08:52.465 --> 09:05.210
[SPEAKER_00]: In the 1860's French intellectual Edward de la Boulet, proposed that a statue representing Liberty be built to mark the 100th anniversary of U.S. independence, as well as the country's friendship with France.
09:05.750 --> 09:12.972
[SPEAKER_00]: So starting in 1876 French sculptor Frederick Augusta Bartoldi began work on the construction of the statue.
09:13.392 --> 09:15.033
[SPEAKER_00]: By 1884 the 150 feet tall, 225 ton copper and steel
09:20.795 --> 09:25.899
[SPEAKER_00]: Now came the hard bit, getting the thing across the Atlantic to America.
09:26.860 --> 09:33.164
[SPEAKER_00]: It was decided the 215-foot-long French frigate Izair would transport the soaring statue.
09:33.985 --> 09:44.253
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool as it'd be to have large libbies strapped up right to the hull of the Izair, the risk of gales blowing this marvel into the depths of the Atlantic, or two greater risk.
09:50.153 --> 09:53.837
[SPEAKER_00]: which were packed into around 200 wooden crates aboard the ship.
09:55.318 --> 10:03.187
[SPEAKER_00]: After the colossal cargo was on board, the EZAR set sail taking some 27 days until she finally reached the shores of New York.
10:03.948 --> 10:12.717
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, the crates were loaded onto a smaller vessel to be taken to Liberty Island, where the statue would later be reassembled in the spot where she still stands today.
10:14.132 --> 10:16.935
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, who knew Libby had clocked up so many miles.
10:17.495 --> 10:22.240
[SPEAKER_00]: But the Statue of Liberty isn't the only bulky bus to have undergone a major move.
10:23.120 --> 10:30.808
[SPEAKER_00]: Back in 13th century BC Egypt, Pharaoh remesses the second over saw the construction of the Abu Symbol Complex.
10:32.442 --> 10:45.047
[SPEAKER_00]: carved into the cliff face where two massive temples, as well as four colossal statues of remesses the second, with the entire structure stretching 125 feet wide and 108 feet high.
10:45.668 --> 10:58.333
[SPEAKER_00]: This monumental marvel stood strong for more than 3,000 years until in the 1960s plans to construct the S1 high dam right next to the structure threatened its very existence.
10:59.805 --> 11:09.888
[SPEAKER_00]: numerous ideas on how to save the temples were put forward, one involved building a gigantic aquarium around the temples with elevator accessible underwater viewing chambers for visitors.
11:10.488 --> 11:14.770
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool as that had looked, the idea was way too ambitious to get the green light.
11:15.550 --> 11:20.813
[SPEAKER_00]: Another proposal involved raising the temples on hydraulic jacks but the cost would have been immense.
11:21.293 --> 11:26.877
[SPEAKER_00]: Eventually it was decided the Abu Sambal would be moved from the site to a nearby artificial hill.
11:27.357 --> 11:32.500
[SPEAKER_00]: But much like the Statue of Liberty, it wasn't feasible to move this massive monument in one piece.
11:32.920 --> 11:41.285
[SPEAKER_00]: Instead starting in 1964, the Abu Sambal was cut up into more than 1,000 manageable chunks using specialized marble cutters.
11:42.560 --> 11:46.303
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I say manageable, those blocks still weighed up to 30 tons.
11:47.604 --> 11:53.909
[SPEAKER_00]: Once cubed, each piece was then picked up by a crane and dropped into a truck to be transported to a depository.
11:55.370 --> 12:01.115
[SPEAKER_00]: When the last of the temple blocks had been moved, work began on reassembling this large Lego-like structure.
12:01.933 --> 12:08.319
[SPEAKER_00]: By 1968, the project was finally complete with the Abu Symbol being returned to its ancient splendor.
12:08.839 --> 12:14.084
[SPEAKER_00]: Only now it was found 900 feet inland and over 210 feet higher than before.
12:14.584 --> 12:18.107
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you could say the Abu Symbol complex was moving up in the world.
12:18.645 --> 12:28.174
[SPEAKER_00]: If you thought transporting the Abu Symbol piece by piece sounded like hard graph, it's nothing compared to what workers over in Russia had to lug back in the 18th century.
12:28.934 --> 12:36.661
[SPEAKER_00]: In the 1760's work began on the construction of the bronze horsemen, a statue that was to be erected in St. Petersburg.
12:38.202 --> 12:44.288
[SPEAKER_00]: For the pedestal, it was decided that the Thunderstone, a large boulder found in the marshland of Lakta, would be used.
12:45.223 --> 12:46.124
[SPEAKER_00]: The only problem?
12:46.924 --> 12:49.987
[SPEAKER_00]: Lack the is around four miles away from St. Petersburg.
12:50.628 --> 13:01.276
[SPEAKER_00]: While cranes and trucks were used to help with the transportation of Abu Simbo, that sort of technology wasn't around in the 1700s, instead they had to rely on good old manpower.
13:02.017 --> 13:13.847
[SPEAKER_00]: Considering this big boulder was 46 feet long, 16 feet high and weighed over 1,600 tons, this was no walk in the park, or 100 men were given the tough task of somehow moving the stone.
13:14.427 --> 13:16.108
[SPEAKER_00]: So, how did they pull it off?
13:17.469 --> 13:21.592
[SPEAKER_00]: Marino's carbaurus, the man in charge of the move, waited for winter to set in.
13:22.072 --> 13:31.538
[SPEAKER_00]: This allowed the monolith to be slid along the frozen ground through two vertical axled rotating machines, each turned by a team of more than 30 workers.
13:32.467 --> 13:36.571
[SPEAKER_00]: to aid the effort Carbure's developed a metal sled that had run along a track.
13:37.111 --> 13:44.037
[SPEAKER_00]: Yet, only around 300 foot of track was available, meaning it had to constantly be disassembled and relayed.
13:45.018 --> 13:49.242
[SPEAKER_00]: Even still, the workers managed to move the boulder around 500 feet per day.
13:49.702 --> 13:54.727
[SPEAKER_00]: If all that wasn't complicated enough, the Nevka River separates Lacto from St. Petersburg.
13:55.227 --> 14:02.236
[SPEAKER_00]: So, once they reached the crossing, the bulky boulder had to be transferred to a barge mounted between two warships of the Russian Navy.
14:02.917 --> 14:10.967
[SPEAKER_00]: Following a short sale, the Thunderstone finally reached its destination in Central St. Petersburg after nearly nine months of back-breaking work.
14:11.877 --> 14:17.159
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, all that graft for a pedestal, 18th-century Russia really had no chill.
14:17.760 --> 14:33.347
[SPEAKER_00]: The bulky plane in question is the CC177 Globe Master III, stretching to a length of 174 feet and weighing in at 200 at 8 tons, this awesome aircraft is virtually twice the length and equal in weight to a blue whale.
14:34.087 --> 14:41.052
[SPEAKER_00]: While it's nowhere near as heavy as the Thunderstone, what makes the moving of this aircraft so incredible is who did it?
14:41.612 --> 14:48.877
[SPEAKER_00]: You see, back in 2009, one lone individual attempted to move the CC-177 glowmaster by themselves.
14:49.417 --> 14:50.438
[SPEAKER_00]: So, who was it?
14:50.798 --> 14:54.561
[SPEAKER_00]: Probably some scary muscle man that you'd not want to lock eyes with.
14:55.181 --> 15:00.604
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, in fact, the plain polar was Kevin Fast, a pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Canada.
15:01.104 --> 15:09.128
[SPEAKER_00]: The plane was secured to a rope attached to fast body while the pastor pulled at a thick rope to edge himself and the colossal cargo forward.
15:09.708 --> 15:17.652
[SPEAKER_00]: Incredibly, after heaving the hall for 76 seconds, fast somehow managed to lug the 200-plus ton load close to 30 feet.
15:18.412 --> 15:22.754
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, just thinking about Kev's formidable feet is making me sweat.
15:23.727 --> 15:27.790
[SPEAKER_00]: the only thing stronger than this pastor's faith in God are his calves.
15:28.330 --> 15:34.253
[SPEAKER_00]: If you've ever moved home, you'll know how stressful the process of lugging all your belongings from place to place is.
15:34.854 --> 15:43.119
[SPEAKER_00]: Still, that's way more chill than one house move that took place in Wuhan, China, back in 2016, where the building itself was moved.
15:43.559 --> 15:48.262
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, this wasn't even a house, it was the Hanku Yiyong Fire Association.
15:48.810 --> 15:56.356
[SPEAKER_00]: A huge three-story building reaching 111 feet tall and weighing in at a staggering 16,650 tons.
15:56.516 --> 16:11.148
[SPEAKER_00]: In 2016, huge demolition works were taking place in Wuhan, but as the Hanku Yiyang Fire Association was considered a historic building, it was decided it'd be relocated rather than removed.
16:11.628 --> 16:13.169
[SPEAKER_00]: So, how did they pull it off?
16:13.669 --> 16:26.093
[SPEAKER_00]: While few specific details were publicly shared, based on other similar historical moves of large buildings, it's likely the building was hollowed out and reinforced before being raised using hydraulic jacks.
16:26.674 --> 16:34.336
[SPEAKER_00]: Once slightly elevated, it could then be slid across these six large concrete tracks, allowing the soaring structure to be rolled 118 feet down the road.
16:36.607 --> 16:45.590
[SPEAKER_00]: Though the Hanku Yiyang Fire Association only moved a distance slightly longer than a basketball court, the delicate move took 11 days in total.
16:46.310 --> 16:46.850
[SPEAKER_00]: Yikes!
16:47.170 --> 16:53.232
[SPEAKER_00]: So next time you're dreading a house move, just remember, things could be a whole lot more stressful.
16:54.056 --> 16:57.618
[SPEAKER_00]: The behemoth in this story is a giant splitter vessel.
16:58.058 --> 17:06.242
[SPEAKER_00]: If you didn't know, this is a large piece of industrial equipment used in the petrochemical industry to help the refining process of oil and gas.
17:06.862 --> 17:12.745
[SPEAKER_00]: In all, this particular splitter measures out at 315 feet long and weighs over 800 tons.
17:13.305 --> 17:18.888
[SPEAKER_00]: For reference, this thing is equal in length to 18 limousines and as heavy as 4 Boeing 747-46.
17:21.929 --> 17:24.071
[SPEAKER_00]: Geez, talk about a large load.
17:24.671 --> 17:33.597
[SPEAKER_00]: Traveling from Edmonton, Canada, the splitter was heading for the nearby Heartland Petrochemical Complex at Fort Saskatchewan around 15 miles away.
17:34.337 --> 17:39.761
[SPEAKER_00]: A simple journey under normal circumstances, but not when you've got to move such a sizeable splitter.
17:40.181 --> 17:47.847
[SPEAKER_00]: If that wasn't already challenging enough that traveling time was in January, meaning they'd have to contest with skinny surfaces as well.
17:48.607 --> 17:58.886
[SPEAKER_00]: It was decided the splitter which was secured on two double 26 shoyerly intercombie trailer lines would be pulled by two trucks from the front and pushed by four more from behind.
18:00.037 --> 18:10.866
[SPEAKER_00]: Taking into account the size of the load in the cold conditions, the splitter which took up the entire width of a two-lane highway, traveled its meticulously planned route in a sensible speed of nine miles per hour.
18:11.586 --> 18:26.299
[SPEAKER_00]: And of course much slower on the carefully coordinated corner turns, much of the route took place on Alberta's high-load corridor, a specialized network of roads with minimal obstacles and wider lanes to handle the transportation of humongous loads, just like this one.
18:27.019 --> 18:34.343
[SPEAKER_00]: Finally, after three days of steady steering, the gargantuan splitter reached its new home at the Heartland Petra Chemical Complex.
18:35.103 --> 18:37.705
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you could say slow and steady one that race.
18:38.605 --> 18:50.232
[SPEAKER_00]: In April 2014, the MV Su-Wall, a passenger ferry traveling to South Korea's Jeju Island, tragically capsized after making a sharp turn while battling a strong current.
18:51.012 --> 18:55.399
[SPEAKER_00]: Three years after the disaster, attempts were finally made to salvage the wreck.
18:56.080 --> 19:01.668
[SPEAKER_00]: At the time of its capsizing, the vast vessel weighed over 6,800 tons, and was carrying over 3,600 tons of cargo.
19:06.034 --> 19:10.799
[SPEAKER_00]: As you can imagine, lifting nearly 10,000 tons of weight from the sea, ain't easy.
19:11.260 --> 19:19.288
[SPEAKER_00]: To start with, two huge barges were placed either side of the wreck, beams were then installed below the ship by digging through the sea bed underneath.
19:19.808 --> 19:25.694
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, cables were attached to a hydraulic jack system on the barges that pulled the sideways ship to the surface.
19:26.375 --> 19:36.202
[SPEAKER_00]: Once the envy so-all had been pulled out the water, it was then up to this mega machine, the Hyundai 10,000 floating crane, to lift the ship into an upright position.
19:37.103 --> 19:46.110
[SPEAKER_00]: In all this clawing contraption is made up of 2,590 foot long crane boom supported by two sets of 230 foot high backstay supports.
19:47.005 --> 19:57.108
[SPEAKER_00]: to haul the ship upright, the crane's 64-wire ropes attached to either side of the battered vessel, allowing the crane to pull the MVs set will upright by gradually tilting the body of the fairy.
19:58.168 --> 19:59.589
[SPEAKER_00]: And… voila!
20:00.389 --> 20:06.951
[SPEAKER_00]: It may not be the longest transport operation we've seen, but a vast vessel getting hauled up by a colossal crane.
20:07.643 --> 20:08.523
[SPEAKER_00]: What's not to like?
20:09.083 --> 20:15.065
[SPEAKER_00]: Now we couldn't mention sea-based supermovers without giving a mention to boats that elevate themselves out the water.
20:15.585 --> 20:17.045
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you heard that right.
20:17.505 --> 20:20.246
[SPEAKER_00]: And no, this isn't the work of some black magic.
20:20.806 --> 20:25.007
[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually down to this ingenious invention, known as a lift boat.
20:25.427 --> 20:28.187
[SPEAKER_00]: At sea, these boats float on the water like any other.
20:28.447 --> 20:33.969
[SPEAKER_00]: However, they're also equipped with three or four long limbs, known as pipe legs, which can extend down
20:36.958 --> 20:47.331
[SPEAKER_00]: The legs are controlled using a jacking system which lowers them to the C-floor, where they can be securely attached, either on a pre-built platform or by penetrating into the ground.
20:48.226 --> 20:57.074
[SPEAKER_00]: As well as that, these legs can be retracted and extended vertically, meaning the ship's hull that was once on the water surface can be elevated to a heavy height.
20:57.695 --> 21:02.680
[SPEAKER_00]: Now you're probably wondering why a ship needs to be hundreds of feet up in the air in the first place?
21:03.260 --> 21:13.130
[SPEAKER_00]: Well by raising the hull up out of the waves, lift boats are able to provide a stable platform for construction and maintenance work carried out on offshore oil and gas platforms.
21:13.670 --> 21:18.256
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, fair to say, the awesome scent of these vessels certainly makes them stand out.
21:18.556 --> 21:27.147
[SPEAKER_00]: Found in the Gulf of Mexico, this humongous oil platform known as the Bull Winkle stands over 380 feet over the waves.
21:27.647 --> 21:28.728
[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty impressive, isn't it?
21:29.229 --> 21:30.751
[SPEAKER_00]: But that ain't the half of it.
21:31.191 --> 21:33.274
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, that ain't even the quarter of it.
21:34.535 --> 21:46.664
[SPEAKER_00]: Below the water, this superstructure dives down a mega 1,353 feet, meaning the total length of the bull-winkle oil platform exceeds 1,700 feet.
21:47.085 --> 21:50.407
[SPEAKER_00]: That makes Obuly about as tall as the one-world trade center.
21:51.410 --> 21:55.872
[SPEAKER_00]: But how could something so mega get transported to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico?
21:56.492 --> 21:58.353
[SPEAKER_00]: First we've got to go back to 1989.
21:59.354 --> 22:02.936
[SPEAKER_00]: This was the year construction of the platform had finished in Texas.
22:03.356 --> 22:11.720
[SPEAKER_00]: By the time the jacket of the Bull Winkle was complete, it weighed around 50,000 tons, around 7 times the mass of the Eiffel Tower's frame.
22:12.817 --> 22:17.241
[SPEAKER_00]: Now construction was complete, came the hard bit, moving the thing.
22:18.022 --> 22:19.864
[SPEAKER_00]: So large was the oil platform.
22:19.924 --> 22:28.252
[SPEAKER_00]: It required a custom-built barge stretching to some 853 feet long, allowing the bull winkle to be towed to its destination.
22:29.237 --> 22:36.382
[SPEAKER_00]: Starting at the tip of Texas 4 tug boats towed the barged bullwinkle some 380 miles out into the Gulf of Mexico.
22:37.062 --> 22:40.744
[SPEAKER_00]: Once it reached its destination, bullwinkle was launched off the barge.
22:41.325 --> 22:53.412
[SPEAKER_00]: Then workers climbed the semi-submerged structure to manually activate the hydraulic system, opening the flood valves, filling the hollow legs with water and sinking the bullwinkle down 1,350 feet to its new home on the ocean floor.
22:56.614 --> 22:58.235
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, what a moving mission.
22:58.636 --> 23:03.700
[SPEAKER_00]: All those involved in this transport operation really had to be on the bull, Winkle.
23:04.420 --> 23:12.647
[SPEAKER_00]: In the Jean-Darque Basin over 2,500 miles north east of the bulky bull Winkle is the site of another colossal construct.
23:13.548 --> 23:16.190
[SPEAKER_00]: Say hello to the Hebron Gravity Base structure.
23:17.442 --> 23:40.849
[SPEAKER_00]: The Hebron oil field located off the coast of Newfoundland Canada, required the construction and transportation of a colossal gravity-based structure, otherwise known as GBS to extract oil gravity-based structures, get their name from the fact that they're anchored to the sea floor by their tremendous weight, and this particular concrete behemoth would provide stability for the oil platform above.
23:41.670 --> 23:48.027
[SPEAKER_00]: After construction of the Hebron GBS was completed in a dry dock, the structure reached a heavy height of 390 feet.
23:50.122 --> 24:04.153
[SPEAKER_00]: On top of that, Hebron GBS also consists of over 4.5 million cubic feet of concrete, enough to fill more than 50 Olympic swimming pools, meaning this Titan clocks the scales at over 650,000 tons.
24:05.294 --> 24:10.418
[SPEAKER_00]: So how did something so dense end up 220 miles off the coast of Newfoundland?
24:11.078 --> 24:12.760
[SPEAKER_00]: A whole lot of towing, that's how.
24:13.520 --> 24:18.722
[SPEAKER_00]: In all, it took the might of several tugboats who managed to tow the GBS to its new home.
24:19.263 --> 24:30.648
[SPEAKER_00]: Part of the design of the Hebron GBS included a cast-on, a large hollow watertight structure that maintained the Hebron GBS buoyancy as it towed out to sea.
24:31.428 --> 24:37.114
[SPEAKER_00]: This being such a stupendously-sized structure, the tugboats couldn't exactly race to their target.
24:37.755 --> 24:46.185
[SPEAKER_00]: Traveling no quicker than three miles per hour, it took two weeks until the GBS reached its final destination in the Gene Dark Basin.
24:46.905 --> 24:52.371
[SPEAKER_00]: From here, water was pumped into the Hebron GBS sending it down into its final position.
24:53.308 --> 25:03.553
[SPEAKER_00]: and that sounds like hard work, but considering the Hebron GBS now pumps out some 150,000 barrels of oil per day, this sounds like a mega move that paid off.
25:04.173 --> 25:14.598
[SPEAKER_00]: In January, 2012, land transport company, al-Majjjoy, and barked on the most ambitious to restrial transport operation ever attempted.
25:15.579 --> 25:22.142
[SPEAKER_00]: They were tasked with moving a water decalination unit, a facility that turned salt water into drinking water.
25:22.986 --> 25:26.930
[SPEAKER_00]: But this wasn't any old water decalination unit, oh no.
25:27.371 --> 25:35.859
[SPEAKER_00]: In total, the unit measures over 400 feet long, 110 feet wide, and 40 feet high, making it similar in size to a football field.
25:36.580 --> 25:37.080
[SPEAKER_00]: Jeez!
25:37.821 --> 25:42.586
[SPEAKER_00]: If that didn't sound massive enough, the unit also weighs a back-breaking 5,400 tons.
25:45.789 --> 25:55.695
[SPEAKER_00]: As much as I'd like to say this oversized unit was lifted up and dropped to its destination by some humongous helicopters, this load was way too large for that.
25:56.296 --> 26:05.842
[SPEAKER_00]: To start with, a 475-foot vessel transported the unit overseas from South Korea to a port of Ross Alcarre in Northeastern Saudi Arabia.
26:06.502 --> 26:17.730
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, an SPMT equipped with 172 Axles 688 double width tires and a load capacity exceeding 7,300 tons was placed under the unit.
26:18.431 --> 26:29.739
[SPEAKER_00]: After slowly rolling the structure of the boat, the SPMT now had the arduous task of transporting the large load from the port to the Rosal care desalination plant over four miles away.
26:30.620 --> 26:32.743
[SPEAKER_00]: But al-Majdoui's work wasn't done there.
26:33.123 --> 26:45.677
[SPEAKER_00]: In total, they had to transport not one, not two, but eight of these units to the Rosal Carre de Salination Plant, meaning they moved well over 40,000 tons worth of water de Salination units.
26:46.520 --> 26:49.241
[SPEAKER_00]: Fortunately, all that hard graph worked out in the end.
26:49.861 --> 27:00.486
[SPEAKER_00]: By the time the Rosalde Claire Discellination Plant was finished in 2014, it could turn salt water into 228 million gallons of drinking water per day.
27:01.046 --> 27:06.209
[SPEAKER_00]: For context, that's enough to provide H20 for 3.5 million people.
27:06.869 --> 27:12.651
[SPEAKER_00]: All that's left to say is water-wapping transport operation that was, and there we have it.
27:17.007 --> 27:19.791
[SPEAKER_00]: Can you think of any more mammoth transport missions yourself?
27:20.431 --> 27:23.956
[SPEAKER_00]: Let me know in the comments if the platform allows it, and thanks for listening.
00:00.111 --> 00:09.557
[SPEAKER_00]: It's safe to say us humans are obsessed with constructing some massive megastructures, but big and impressive as these feats of engineering ingenuity are.
00:09.937 --> 00:12.939
[SPEAKER_00]: Have you ever considered how they got there in the first place?
00:13.519 --> 00:21.084
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, even more impressive than the size of some structures are the tremendous transport operations that help them get from A to B.
00:22.242 --> 00:30.987
[SPEAKER_00]: from towing towering oil platforms to road ready space shuttles, get your seat belt strapped, as we take a look at the largest things ever moved.
00:43.722 --> 00:52.269
[SPEAKER_00]: At 1,549 feet tall, the troll A platform found in the middle of the North Sea is a super-soring structure.
00:52.789 --> 01:02.677
[SPEAKER_00]: In all, this platform used to extract natural gas from the troll gas field measures around the height of the Central Park Tower, the 15th tallest building in the world.
01:03.342 --> 01:12.984
[SPEAKER_00]: Not that you'd be able to tell that from looking at it though, you see this platform is mostly made up of four legs descending down nearly 1,000 feet to the sea floor.
01:13.504 --> 01:17.325
[SPEAKER_00]: The question is, how did something so big end up here?
01:18.026 --> 01:23.767
[SPEAKER_00]: This behemoth was constructed in a dock near the village of Vats on the western coast of Norway.
01:24.954 --> 01:30.179
[SPEAKER_00]: After the legs had finished construction, they were filled with water until they were virtually submerged.
01:30.639 --> 01:34.683
[SPEAKER_00]: Following this engineer's towed troll-A's platform over the legs.
01:35.384 --> 01:43.411
[SPEAKER_00]: Once the platform was floating above the legs, the water was pumped out of the legs, gradually raising them out of the water and closer to the platform overhead.
01:44.332 --> 01:50.098
[SPEAKER_00]: After all that, by May 1995, troll-A was finally ready for its journey.
01:50.977 --> 02:00.120
[SPEAKER_00]: Now those involved had the small task of getting the 1.2 million tons structure from vats to the troll gas field over 120 miles away.
02:01.000 --> 02:05.322
[SPEAKER_00]: Ten tugboats had the unenviable task of towing the towering structure.
02:05.942 --> 02:14.725
[SPEAKER_00]: Due to the sheer size of the operation, the tugboats which were generating 130,000 horsepower couldn't travel faster than two miles per hour.
02:16.234 --> 02:21.716
[SPEAKER_00]: As a result, it took the boats no less than seven days until they finally reached their destination.
02:22.236 --> 02:36.761
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, trolley's legs were once again filled with water until they were resting on the sea bed nearly 1,000 feet down, where they were then fixed in place by attaching suction buckets to the base of the structure, which gripped the sea floor by a permanent vacuum seal.
02:37.341 --> 02:43.543
[SPEAKER_00]: With the anchors in place, water was pumped out of the legs once more, finally finishing this enormous operation.
02:44.223 --> 02:46.645
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, that's what you call, a long haul.
02:47.146 --> 02:52.211
[SPEAKER_00]: When you think of space shuttles, you probably conjure up images of rockets whizzing through orbit.
02:52.511 --> 02:55.654
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's not always how these vehicles get from A to B.
02:56.114 --> 02:57.095
[SPEAKER_00]: Take the endeavor.
02:57.536 --> 03:07.005
[SPEAKER_00]: From 1992 to 2011, the shuttle completed 25 missions, visiting faraway locations like the International Space Station and the Hubble Space Telescope.
03:07.778 --> 03:11.440
[SPEAKER_00]: Yet the Endeavor's final journey wasn't quite so meteoric.
03:12.080 --> 03:19.863
[SPEAKER_00]: Rather than paying one last visit to space, this rocket had to make the nine-mile journey from LAX Airport to the California Science Center.
03:21.514 --> 03:24.236
[SPEAKER_00]: sound simpler than flying into space, right?
03:24.596 --> 03:33.623
[SPEAKER_00]: However, weighing in at 86 tons, the shuttle was too heavy for a helicopter, plus it couldn't be dismantled without causing permanent damage to the vehicle.
03:34.124 --> 03:41.369
[SPEAKER_00]: So the California Science Center made the decision to shell out $10 million to transport the shuttle overland.
03:41.950 --> 03:44.372
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, the space shuttle was hitting the road.
03:45.170 --> 03:53.715
[SPEAKER_00]: That came with another problem though, at 122 feet long and 78 feet wide, the endeavor wasn't exactly road-ready.
03:55.376 --> 04:02.820
[SPEAKER_00]: Being so long and wide, there are a whole host of paths in Los Angeles that the space shuttle could never realistically travel through.
04:03.460 --> 04:09.544
[SPEAKER_00]: Eventually a 12-mile path was settled upon, with the endeavor taking off at midnight on October 11, 2012.
04:11.845 --> 04:21.188
[SPEAKER_00]: as well as choosing a route that avoided as many traffic signals and buildings as possible, 400 trees were chopped down to provide clearance for the old orbiter.
04:21.668 --> 04:38.793
[SPEAKER_00]: For its ride, the 86-ton shuttle was loaded on top of four self-propelled modular trailers, or SPMTs for short, these multi-axle computer-controlled vehicles allowed precise maneuverability and stability while moving the shuttle through such a busy route.
04:39.633 --> 04:49.323
[SPEAKER_00]: In all, it took two days to transport the orbiter to its new base at the California Science Center, and to think this shuttle traveled over 17,000 miles per hour in space.
04:51.613 --> 05:01.623
[SPEAKER_00]: Still, the effort to lug a literal 122-foot-long space shuttle through the streets of Los Angeles makes this one of the world's most mind-blowing transportation feeds.
05:01.943 --> 05:08.229
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not just enormous inanimate objects like space shuttles and oil platforms that have been part of Mega Moves.
05:08.729 --> 05:16.237
[SPEAKER_00]: Back in January 1997, a weak old female gray whale was found stranded on the coast of Southern California.
05:16.777 --> 05:22.638
[SPEAKER_00]: To save the critter, it was decided she'd be brought in to SeaWorld San Diego to undergo rehabilitation.
05:23.539 --> 05:34.721
[SPEAKER_00]: A crowd of seagoers hoisted the 14-foot-long 1,670-pound heavy, young whale onto a 24-foot truck, constantly dousing her in water to keep her hydrated.
05:36.082 --> 05:41.663
[SPEAKER_00]: Following a lengthy 140-mile journey, the creature finally reached SeaWorld San Diego.
05:42.713 --> 05:48.575
[SPEAKER_00]: After a year under SeaWorld San Diego's care, the whale which had been named J.J. recovered well.
05:49.095 --> 05:58.399
[SPEAKER_00]: Incredibly, she'd grown to 30 feet and managed to pack on 9 tons of weight, delighted as her carers must have been at left them in a sticky situation.
05:59.959 --> 06:03.161
[SPEAKER_00]: The plan was always to release J.J. after she recovered.
06:03.761 --> 06:08.803
[SPEAKER_00]: But how do you go about transporting a living being that's close and length and weight to a school bus?
06:09.563 --> 06:18.585
[SPEAKER_00]: First up, J.J. was scooped up from her tank in a custom-made sling, lifted by crane and placed into a 40-foot water-filled foam-patted trailer.
06:19.025 --> 06:22.625
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, a truck pulled the trailer from SeaWorld to the nearby harbor.
06:23.065 --> 06:29.627
[SPEAKER_00]: Then J.J. was transferred once more this time onto the 180-foot buoy tender U.S.C.G.C.
06:29.687 --> 06:30.287
[SPEAKER_00]: Connofer.
06:30.787 --> 06:37.388
[SPEAKER_00]: That vessel then sailed her out into the waters of the Pacific before her stretcher was lowered down into the waves below.
06:38.505 --> 06:44.515
[SPEAKER_00]: Once back in the ocean, J.J. took a big breath before diving down and disappearing into the dark depths.
06:44.976 --> 06:48.361
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, who knew transportation efforts could make you teary-eyed?
06:49.002 --> 06:51.687
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I mean, let's see what mammoth move is up next.
06:53.025 --> 06:59.028
[SPEAKER_00]: In 2017, McLaren engineering group embarked on their own trepidacious transport mission.
06:59.528 --> 07:05.031
[SPEAKER_00]: They were tasked with moving a heat recovery steam generator or HRSG for short.
07:05.611 --> 07:11.173
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a pretty important piece of kit and power plants used to capture waste heat from gas turbines.
07:11.714 --> 07:17.856
[SPEAKER_00]: The generator McLaren moved was a neck-breaking 130 feet tall and weighed some 4,000 tons.
07:19.177 --> 07:26.159
[SPEAKER_00]: Essentially, this cargo was close in height to the Arctatriomp and around as heavy as 70 standard American homes.
07:26.820 --> 07:39.164
[SPEAKER_00]: Wolf On top of that McLaren engineering group had to somehow transport this thing down 130 miles, from Ravenna, New York to a power plant and soar in New Jersey.
07:40.084 --> 07:45.246
[SPEAKER_00]: Unsurprisingly, it was ruled that the colossal cargo was too tall to make the trip on land,
07:45.926 --> 07:59.911
[SPEAKER_00]: Instead, it was decided the best route would be down the Hudson River, so a fleet of five self-propelled modular trailers delivered the HRSG onto a 400 foot long barge which would be towed by three tugboats.
08:00.511 --> 08:10.434
[SPEAKER_00]: Fortunately, the HRSG was just small enough to allow the barge to sail just below bridges on route with some offering as little as nine feet of clearance.
08:10.974 --> 08:18.420
[SPEAKER_00]: So stupendously large was this shipment, the barge even beamed red and white marker lights to alert small aircrafts of its presence.
08:19.120 --> 08:28.848
[SPEAKER_00]: Incredibly though, after 36 hours on the water, traveling at a snail-like 5 miles per hour, the humongous unit reached its new home at Soar.
08:30.573 --> 08:33.455
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, that's one monumental moving mission.
08:33.835 --> 08:44.181
[SPEAKER_00]: Whether it's the Empire State Building, one World Trade Center, or the Statue of Liberty, New York has some of the world's most recognizable attractions dominating its skyline.
08:44.601 --> 08:51.965
[SPEAKER_00]: But while the Empire State Building and one World Trade Center were constructed in the Big Apple, the same can't be said for Lady Liberty.
08:52.465 --> 09:05.210
[SPEAKER_00]: In the 1860's French intellectual Edward de la Boulet, proposed that a statue representing Liberty be built to mark the 100th anniversary of U.S. independence, as well as the country's friendship with France.
09:05.750 --> 09:12.972
[SPEAKER_00]: So starting in 1876 French sculptor Frederick Augusta Bartoldi began work on the construction of the statue.
09:13.392 --> 09:15.033
[SPEAKER_00]: By 1884 the 150 feet tall, 225 ton copper and steel
09:20.795 --> 09:25.899
[SPEAKER_00]: Now came the hard bit, getting the thing across the Atlantic to America.
09:26.860 --> 09:33.164
[SPEAKER_00]: It was decided the 215-foot-long French frigate Izair would transport the soaring statue.
09:33.985 --> 09:44.253
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool as it'd be to have large libbies strapped up right to the hull of the Izair, the risk of gales blowing this marvel into the depths of the Atlantic, or two greater risk.
09:50.153 --> 09:53.837
[SPEAKER_00]: which were packed into around 200 wooden crates aboard the ship.
09:55.318 --> 10:03.187
[SPEAKER_00]: After the colossal cargo was on board, the EZAR set sail taking some 27 days until she finally reached the shores of New York.
10:03.948 --> 10:12.717
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, the crates were loaded onto a smaller vessel to be taken to Liberty Island, where the statue would later be reassembled in the spot where she still stands today.
10:14.132 --> 10:16.935
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, who knew Libby had clocked up so many miles.
10:17.495 --> 10:22.240
[SPEAKER_00]: But the Statue of Liberty isn't the only bulky bus to have undergone a major move.
10:23.120 --> 10:30.808
[SPEAKER_00]: Back in 13th century BC Egypt, Pharaoh remesses the second over saw the construction of the Abu Symbol Complex.
10:32.442 --> 10:45.047
[SPEAKER_00]: carved into the cliff face where two massive temples, as well as four colossal statues of remesses the second, with the entire structure stretching 125 feet wide and 108 feet high.
10:45.668 --> 10:58.333
[SPEAKER_00]: This monumental marvel stood strong for more than 3,000 years until in the 1960s plans to construct the S1 high dam right next to the structure threatened its very existence.
10:59.805 --> 11:09.888
[SPEAKER_00]: numerous ideas on how to save the temples were put forward, one involved building a gigantic aquarium around the temples with elevator accessible underwater viewing chambers for visitors.
11:10.488 --> 11:14.770
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool as that had looked, the idea was way too ambitious to get the green light.
11:15.550 --> 11:20.813
[SPEAKER_00]: Another proposal involved raising the temples on hydraulic jacks but the cost would have been immense.
11:21.293 --> 11:26.877
[SPEAKER_00]: Eventually it was decided the Abu Sambal would be moved from the site to a nearby artificial hill.
11:27.357 --> 11:32.500
[SPEAKER_00]: But much like the Statue of Liberty, it wasn't feasible to move this massive monument in one piece.
11:32.920 --> 11:41.285
[SPEAKER_00]: Instead starting in 1964, the Abu Sambal was cut up into more than 1,000 manageable chunks using specialized marble cutters.
11:42.560 --> 11:46.303
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I say manageable, those blocks still weighed up to 30 tons.
11:47.604 --> 11:53.909
[SPEAKER_00]: Once cubed, each piece was then picked up by a crane and dropped into a truck to be transported to a depository.
11:55.370 --> 12:01.115
[SPEAKER_00]: When the last of the temple blocks had been moved, work began on reassembling this large Lego-like structure.
12:01.933 --> 12:08.319
[SPEAKER_00]: By 1968, the project was finally complete with the Abu Symbol being returned to its ancient splendor.
12:08.839 --> 12:14.084
[SPEAKER_00]: Only now it was found 900 feet inland and over 210 feet higher than before.
12:14.584 --> 12:18.107
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you could say the Abu Symbol complex was moving up in the world.
12:18.645 --> 12:28.174
[SPEAKER_00]: If you thought transporting the Abu Symbol piece by piece sounded like hard graph, it's nothing compared to what workers over in Russia had to lug back in the 18th century.
12:28.934 --> 12:36.661
[SPEAKER_00]: In the 1760's work began on the construction of the bronze horsemen, a statue that was to be erected in St. Petersburg.
12:38.202 --> 12:44.288
[SPEAKER_00]: For the pedestal, it was decided that the Thunderstone, a large boulder found in the marshland of Lakta, would be used.
12:45.223 --> 12:46.124
[SPEAKER_00]: The only problem?
12:46.924 --> 12:49.987
[SPEAKER_00]: Lack the is around four miles away from St. Petersburg.
12:50.628 --> 13:01.276
[SPEAKER_00]: While cranes and trucks were used to help with the transportation of Abu Simbo, that sort of technology wasn't around in the 1700s, instead they had to rely on good old manpower.
13:02.017 --> 13:13.847
[SPEAKER_00]: Considering this big boulder was 46 feet long, 16 feet high and weighed over 1,600 tons, this was no walk in the park, or 100 men were given the tough task of somehow moving the stone.
13:14.427 --> 13:16.108
[SPEAKER_00]: So, how did they pull it off?
13:17.469 --> 13:21.592
[SPEAKER_00]: Marino's carbaurus, the man in charge of the move, waited for winter to set in.
13:22.072 --> 13:31.538
[SPEAKER_00]: This allowed the monolith to be slid along the frozen ground through two vertical axled rotating machines, each turned by a team of more than 30 workers.
13:32.467 --> 13:36.571
[SPEAKER_00]: to aid the effort Carbure's developed a metal sled that had run along a track.
13:37.111 --> 13:44.037
[SPEAKER_00]: Yet, only around 300 foot of track was available, meaning it had to constantly be disassembled and relayed.
13:45.018 --> 13:49.242
[SPEAKER_00]: Even still, the workers managed to move the boulder around 500 feet per day.
13:49.702 --> 13:54.727
[SPEAKER_00]: If all that wasn't complicated enough, the Nevka River separates Lacto from St. Petersburg.
13:55.227 --> 14:02.236
[SPEAKER_00]: So, once they reached the crossing, the bulky boulder had to be transferred to a barge mounted between two warships of the Russian Navy.
14:02.917 --> 14:10.967
[SPEAKER_00]: Following a short sale, the Thunderstone finally reached its destination in Central St. Petersburg after nearly nine months of back-breaking work.
14:11.877 --> 14:17.159
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, all that graft for a pedestal, 18th-century Russia really had no chill.
14:17.760 --> 14:33.347
[SPEAKER_00]: The bulky plane in question is the CC177 Globe Master III, stretching to a length of 174 feet and weighing in at 200 at 8 tons, this awesome aircraft is virtually twice the length and equal in weight to a blue whale.
14:34.087 --> 14:41.052
[SPEAKER_00]: While it's nowhere near as heavy as the Thunderstone, what makes the moving of this aircraft so incredible is who did it?
14:41.612 --> 14:48.877
[SPEAKER_00]: You see, back in 2009, one lone individual attempted to move the CC-177 glowmaster by themselves.
14:49.417 --> 14:50.438
[SPEAKER_00]: So, who was it?
14:50.798 --> 14:54.561
[SPEAKER_00]: Probably some scary muscle man that you'd not want to lock eyes with.
14:55.181 --> 15:00.604
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, in fact, the plain polar was Kevin Fast, a pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Canada.
15:01.104 --> 15:09.128
[SPEAKER_00]: The plane was secured to a rope attached to fast body while the pastor pulled at a thick rope to edge himself and the colossal cargo forward.
15:09.708 --> 15:17.652
[SPEAKER_00]: Incredibly, after heaving the hall for 76 seconds, fast somehow managed to lug the 200-plus ton load close to 30 feet.
15:18.412 --> 15:22.754
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, just thinking about Kev's formidable feet is making me sweat.
15:23.727 --> 15:27.790
[SPEAKER_00]: the only thing stronger than this pastor's faith in God are his calves.
15:28.330 --> 15:34.253
[SPEAKER_00]: If you've ever moved home, you'll know how stressful the process of lugging all your belongings from place to place is.
15:34.854 --> 15:43.119
[SPEAKER_00]: Still, that's way more chill than one house move that took place in Wuhan, China, back in 2016, where the building itself was moved.
15:43.559 --> 15:48.262
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, this wasn't even a house, it was the Hanku Yiyong Fire Association.
15:48.810 --> 15:56.356
[SPEAKER_00]: A huge three-story building reaching 111 feet tall and weighing in at a staggering 16,650 tons.
15:56.516 --> 16:11.148
[SPEAKER_00]: In 2016, huge demolition works were taking place in Wuhan, but as the Hanku Yiyang Fire Association was considered a historic building, it was decided it'd be relocated rather than removed.
16:11.628 --> 16:13.169
[SPEAKER_00]: So, how did they pull it off?
16:13.669 --> 16:26.093
[SPEAKER_00]: While few specific details were publicly shared, based on other similar historical moves of large buildings, it's likely the building was hollowed out and reinforced before being raised using hydraulic jacks.
16:26.674 --> 16:34.336
[SPEAKER_00]: Once slightly elevated, it could then be slid across these six large concrete tracks, allowing the soaring structure to be rolled 118 feet down the road.
16:36.607 --> 16:45.590
[SPEAKER_00]: Though the Hanku Yiyang Fire Association only moved a distance slightly longer than a basketball court, the delicate move took 11 days in total.
16:46.310 --> 16:46.850
[SPEAKER_00]: Yikes!
16:47.170 --> 16:53.232
[SPEAKER_00]: So next time you're dreading a house move, just remember, things could be a whole lot more stressful.
16:54.056 --> 16:57.618
[SPEAKER_00]: The behemoth in this story is a giant splitter vessel.
16:58.058 --> 17:06.242
[SPEAKER_00]: If you didn't know, this is a large piece of industrial equipment used in the petrochemical industry to help the refining process of oil and gas.
17:06.862 --> 17:12.745
[SPEAKER_00]: In all, this particular splitter measures out at 315 feet long and weighs over 800 tons.
17:13.305 --> 17:18.888
[SPEAKER_00]: For reference, this thing is equal in length to 18 limousines and as heavy as 4 Boeing 747-46.
17:21.929 --> 17:24.071
[SPEAKER_00]: Geez, talk about a large load.
17:24.671 --> 17:33.597
[SPEAKER_00]: Traveling from Edmonton, Canada, the splitter was heading for the nearby Heartland Petrochemical Complex at Fort Saskatchewan around 15 miles away.
17:34.337 --> 17:39.761
[SPEAKER_00]: A simple journey under normal circumstances, but not when you've got to move such a sizeable splitter.
17:40.181 --> 17:47.847
[SPEAKER_00]: If that wasn't already challenging enough that traveling time was in January, meaning they'd have to contest with skinny surfaces as well.
17:48.607 --> 17:58.886
[SPEAKER_00]: It was decided the splitter which was secured on two double 26 shoyerly intercombie trailer lines would be pulled by two trucks from the front and pushed by four more from behind.
18:00.037 --> 18:10.866
[SPEAKER_00]: Taking into account the size of the load in the cold conditions, the splitter which took up the entire width of a two-lane highway, traveled its meticulously planned route in a sensible speed of nine miles per hour.
18:11.586 --> 18:26.299
[SPEAKER_00]: And of course much slower on the carefully coordinated corner turns, much of the route took place on Alberta's high-load corridor, a specialized network of roads with minimal obstacles and wider lanes to handle the transportation of humongous loads, just like this one.
18:27.019 --> 18:34.343
[SPEAKER_00]: Finally, after three days of steady steering, the gargantuan splitter reached its new home at the Heartland Petra Chemical Complex.
18:35.103 --> 18:37.705
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you could say slow and steady one that race.
18:38.605 --> 18:50.232
[SPEAKER_00]: In April 2014, the MV Su-Wall, a passenger ferry traveling to South Korea's Jeju Island, tragically capsized after making a sharp turn while battling a strong current.
18:51.012 --> 18:55.399
[SPEAKER_00]: Three years after the disaster, attempts were finally made to salvage the wreck.
18:56.080 --> 19:01.668
[SPEAKER_00]: At the time of its capsizing, the vast vessel weighed over 6,800 tons, and was carrying over 3,600 tons of cargo.
19:06.034 --> 19:10.799
[SPEAKER_00]: As you can imagine, lifting nearly 10,000 tons of weight from the sea, ain't easy.
19:11.260 --> 19:19.288
[SPEAKER_00]: To start with, two huge barges were placed either side of the wreck, beams were then installed below the ship by digging through the sea bed underneath.
19:19.808 --> 19:25.694
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, cables were attached to a hydraulic jack system on the barges that pulled the sideways ship to the surface.
19:26.375 --> 19:36.202
[SPEAKER_00]: Once the envy so-all had been pulled out the water, it was then up to this mega machine, the Hyundai 10,000 floating crane, to lift the ship into an upright position.
19:37.103 --> 19:46.110
[SPEAKER_00]: In all this clawing contraption is made up of 2,590 foot long crane boom supported by two sets of 230 foot high backstay supports.
19:47.005 --> 19:57.108
[SPEAKER_00]: to haul the ship upright, the crane's 64-wire ropes attached to either side of the battered vessel, allowing the crane to pull the MVs set will upright by gradually tilting the body of the fairy.
19:58.168 --> 19:59.589
[SPEAKER_00]: And… voila!
20:00.389 --> 20:06.951
[SPEAKER_00]: It may not be the longest transport operation we've seen, but a vast vessel getting hauled up by a colossal crane.
20:07.643 --> 20:08.523
[SPEAKER_00]: What's not to like?
20:09.083 --> 20:15.065
[SPEAKER_00]: Now we couldn't mention sea-based supermovers without giving a mention to boats that elevate themselves out the water.
20:15.585 --> 20:17.045
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you heard that right.
20:17.505 --> 20:20.246
[SPEAKER_00]: And no, this isn't the work of some black magic.
20:20.806 --> 20:25.007
[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually down to this ingenious invention, known as a lift boat.
20:25.427 --> 20:28.187
[SPEAKER_00]: At sea, these boats float on the water like any other.
20:28.447 --> 20:33.969
[SPEAKER_00]: However, they're also equipped with three or four long limbs, known as pipe legs, which can extend down
20:36.958 --> 20:47.331
[SPEAKER_00]: The legs are controlled using a jacking system which lowers them to the C-floor, where they can be securely attached, either on a pre-built platform or by penetrating into the ground.
20:48.226 --> 20:57.074
[SPEAKER_00]: As well as that, these legs can be retracted and extended vertically, meaning the ship's hull that was once on the water surface can be elevated to a heavy height.
20:57.695 --> 21:02.680
[SPEAKER_00]: Now you're probably wondering why a ship needs to be hundreds of feet up in the air in the first place?
21:03.260 --> 21:13.130
[SPEAKER_00]: Well by raising the hull up out of the waves, lift boats are able to provide a stable platform for construction and maintenance work carried out on offshore oil and gas platforms.
21:13.670 --> 21:18.256
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, fair to say, the awesome scent of these vessels certainly makes them stand out.
21:18.556 --> 21:27.147
[SPEAKER_00]: Found in the Gulf of Mexico, this humongous oil platform known as the Bull Winkle stands over 380 feet over the waves.
21:27.647 --> 21:28.728
[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty impressive, isn't it?
21:29.229 --> 21:30.751
[SPEAKER_00]: But that ain't the half of it.
21:31.191 --> 21:33.274
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, that ain't even the quarter of it.
21:34.535 --> 21:46.664
[SPEAKER_00]: Below the water, this superstructure dives down a mega 1,353 feet, meaning the total length of the bull-winkle oil platform exceeds 1,700 feet.
21:47.085 --> 21:50.407
[SPEAKER_00]: That makes Obuly about as tall as the one-world trade center.
21:51.410 --> 21:55.872
[SPEAKER_00]: But how could something so mega get transported to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico?
21:56.492 --> 21:58.353
[SPEAKER_00]: First we've got to go back to 1989.
21:59.354 --> 22:02.936
[SPEAKER_00]: This was the year construction of the platform had finished in Texas.
22:03.356 --> 22:11.720
[SPEAKER_00]: By the time the jacket of the Bull Winkle was complete, it weighed around 50,000 tons, around 7 times the mass of the Eiffel Tower's frame.
22:12.817 --> 22:17.241
[SPEAKER_00]: Now construction was complete, came the hard bit, moving the thing.
22:18.022 --> 22:19.864
[SPEAKER_00]: So large was the oil platform.
22:19.924 --> 22:28.252
[SPEAKER_00]: It required a custom-built barge stretching to some 853 feet long, allowing the bull winkle to be towed to its destination.
22:29.237 --> 22:36.382
[SPEAKER_00]: Starting at the tip of Texas 4 tug boats towed the barged bullwinkle some 380 miles out into the Gulf of Mexico.
22:37.062 --> 22:40.744
[SPEAKER_00]: Once it reached its destination, bullwinkle was launched off the barge.
22:41.325 --> 22:53.412
[SPEAKER_00]: Then workers climbed the semi-submerged structure to manually activate the hydraulic system, opening the flood valves, filling the hollow legs with water and sinking the bullwinkle down 1,350 feet to its new home on the ocean floor.
22:56.614 --> 22:58.235
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, what a moving mission.
22:58.636 --> 23:03.700
[SPEAKER_00]: All those involved in this transport operation really had to be on the bull, Winkle.
23:04.420 --> 23:12.647
[SPEAKER_00]: In the Jean-Darque Basin over 2,500 miles north east of the bulky bull Winkle is the site of another colossal construct.
23:13.548 --> 23:16.190
[SPEAKER_00]: Say hello to the Hebron Gravity Base structure.
23:17.442 --> 23:40.849
23:41.670 --> 23:48.027
[SPEAKER_00]: After construction of the Hebron GBS was completed in a dry dock, the structure reached a heavy height of 390 feet.
23:50.122 --> 24:04.153
[SPEAKER_00]: On top of that, Hebron GBS also consists of over 4.5 million cubic feet of concrete, enough to fill more than 50 Olympic swimming pools, meaning this Titan clocks the scales at over 650,000 tons.
24:05.294 --> 24:10.418
[SPEAKER_00]: So how did something so dense end up 220 miles off the coast of Newfoundland?
24:11.078 --> 24:12.760
[SPEAKER_00]: A whole lot of towing, that's how.
24:13.520 --> 24:18.722
[SPEAKER_00]: In all, it took the might of several tugboats who managed to tow the GBS to its new home.
24:19.263 --> 24:30.648
[SPEAKER_00]: Part of the design of the Hebron GBS included a cast-on, a large hollow watertight structure that maintained the Hebron GBS buoyancy as it towed out to sea.
24:31.428 --> 24:37.114
[SPEAKER_00]: This being such a stupendously-sized structure, the tugboats couldn't exactly race to their target.
24:37.755 --> 24:46.185
[SPEAKER_00]: Traveling no quicker than three miles per hour, it took two weeks until the GBS reached its final destination in the Gene Dark Basin.
24:46.905 --> 24:52.371
[SPEAKER_00]: From here, water was pumped into the Hebron GBS sending it down into its final position.
24:53.308 --> 25:03.553
[SPEAKER_00]: and that sounds like hard work, but considering the Hebron GBS now pumps out some 150,000 barrels of oil per day, this sounds like a mega move that paid off.
25:04.173 --> 25:14.598
[SPEAKER_00]: In January, 2012, land transport company, al-Majjjoy, and barked on the most ambitious to restrial transport operation ever attempted.
25:15.579 --> 25:22.142
[SPEAKER_00]: They were tasked with moving a water decalination unit, a facility that turned salt water into drinking water.
25:22.986 --> 25:26.930
[SPEAKER_00]: But this wasn't any old water decalination unit, oh no.
25:27.371 --> 25:35.859
[SPEAKER_00]: In total, the unit measures over 400 feet long, 110 feet wide, and 40 feet high, making it similar in size to a football field.
25:36.580 --> 25:37.080
[SPEAKER_00]: Jeez!
25:37.821 --> 25:42.586
[SPEAKER_00]: If that didn't sound massive enough, the unit also weighs a back-breaking 5,400 tons.
25:45.789 --> 25:55.695
[SPEAKER_00]: As much as I'd like to say this oversized unit was lifted up and dropped to its destination by some humongous helicopters, this load was way too large for that.
25:56.296 --> 26:05.842
[SPEAKER_00]: To start with, a 475-foot vessel transported the unit overseas from South Korea to a port of Ross Alcarre in Northeastern Saudi Arabia.
26:06.502 --> 26:17.730
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, an SPMT equipped with 172 Axles 688 double width tires and a load capacity exceeding 7,300 tons was placed under the unit.
26:18.431 --> 26:29.739
[SPEAKER_00]: After slowly rolling the structure of the boat, the SPMT now had the arduous task of transporting the large load from the port to the Rosal care desalination plant over four miles away.
26:30.620 --> 26:32.743
[SPEAKER_00]: But al-Majdoui's work wasn't done there.
26:33.123 --> 26:45.677
[SPEAKER_00]: In total, they had to transport not one, not two, but eight of these units to the Rosal Carre de Salination Plant, meaning they moved well over 40,000 tons worth of water de Salination units.
26:46.520 --> 26:49.241
[SPEAKER_00]: Fortunately, all that hard graph worked out in the end.
26:49.861 --> 27:00.486
[SPEAKER_00]: By the time the Rosalde Claire Discellination Plant was finished in 2014, it could turn salt water into 228 million gallons of drinking water per day.
