October 13, 2026. A boy of fourteen is dead in northern Israel because a munition that failed to explode in a war lay in the brush where a school took its children walking. Then Army Radio asked whose job it was to clear that ground, and got two official answers that cannot both be true.
Tonight's report:
• Elazar Yair Wilensky, 14, youngest of five siblings, killed on a class hike on the Ramim Ridge, 50 to 100 metres from the Lebanese border. The IDF's preliminary assessment is an unexploded Hezbollah cluster munition. Israel Hayom reports the army is still checking that• 24 injured, and three published breakdowns that do not agree. Jerusalem Post: 2 serious, 10 moderate, 12 light. Israel Hayom, hospital by hospital: 6 serious, 2 moderate, 15 light plus 2 adults, which adds to 25 against its own stated 24. We print all three• The Defense Ministry: "The Authority is not supposed to clear unexploded ordnance resulting from enemy fire. That is the job of the police." The Mine Action Authority's own project document says detection and destruction of unexploded ammunition is among its activities. Both are official. Both cannot be right• That Authority has no permanent director. Army Radio's Doron Kadosh warns remnants may lie in reopened ground already inspected, by estimates running to hundreds or thousands• Moscow finally answers. Peskov on the energy ceasefire: "Contacts are ongoing." On Zelensky's 60-day election truce: "we do not want a ceasefire"• Axios and the FT report the US threatened to cut Ukraine's intelligence feed over refinery strikes. The Kyiv Independent confirms with its own sources that it also covered European purchases of US weapons. Two European officials, a third to CNN, and zero governments. At stake: the Patriot interceptor Ukraine is already short of• Kharkiv: 4 killed, 15+ injured including a rescuer. Kyiv: 2 killed, 14 injured, a missile before the alert• Twelve dead and 300+ wounded at Riyadh's airport per Saudi authorities. One wire said 13 and we name the outlier. Tankers hit near Sohar and in the Strait of Hormuz• Two attacks off Bulgaria in eight days, not one. Oct 6: Alfa Watan sank, Able burned. Overnight: Chelsea 3 and a second vessel, 15 crew off at Varna. PM Radev: "absolutely unacceptable"• Hundreds of French supermarkets lose refrigeration to an attack on the cooling machinery. Cabinets forced to 50°C. Nobody has claimed it and no authority has attributed it, and neither will we• Paris loses the Marché des Enfants Rouges, its oldest covered market, to fire
Followed by "From the Homefront" — Dorothy Wilson makes roast chicken with bread stuffing, and names the four places the cookbooks disagree.
