درباره این اپیزود
In Episode 3 of The Forward Standard, host Tanner Courtney sits down at H&M Marina with boat mechanic, entrepreneur, and ultramarathon runner Alex Payne for a conversation about what it really takes to keep moving forward. Alex shares his journey from spending most of his life working around boats to finally betting on himself and launching a mobile marine oil-change business that services customers directly from the water. But the entrepreneurial story is only part of this conversation.
Tanner and Alex dig into the harder work happening behind the scenes: sobriety, relationships, therapy, self-worth, faith, physical endurance, and learning to recognize when life is gently pushing you toward the path you're supposed to be on. Alex opens up about realizing that he couldn't depend on another person for validation and that becoming better in a relationship first required becoming better within himself. The two also explore how ultramarathon running teaches lessons that reach far beyond the trail—discipline, perseverance, discomfort, and discovering that you're capable of considerably more than your mind tells you.
Ultimately, this episode gets directly to the heart of The Forward Standard: meaningful change doesn't require waiting for someone else to fix the country, your community, your business, or your life. It begins with individual responsibility and seemingly small decisions. When one person moves forward, that action can inspire another—and another—until individual choices create something much bigger.
Betting on yourself. Alex explains why he finally left the security of working for someone else to build a business around the skills and industry he'd spent years developing. The lesson isn't that entrepreneurship is easy; it's that pursuing something meaningful sometimes requires accepting uncertainty, paperwork, long hours, and work nobody else will ever see.
The work nobody can do for you. One of the strongest parts of the conversation comes when Alex discusses relationships, sobriety, therapy, and learning to look inward rather than placing responsibility for his happiness on someone else. His realization that love and validation have to begin internally becomes a larger lesson about personal responsibility.
Your limits may not actually be your limits. Ultramarathon running becomes a metaphor for life and entrepreneurship. Alex and Tanner discuss what happens when the mind says you're finished but you discover there's still something left in the tank. That willingness to continue through discomfort can reshape how someone approaches business, relationships, and adversity.
Small actions can become movements. Alex closes the conversation with an idea perfectly aligned with the mission of The Forward Standard: don't underestimate the significance of doing the small thing that's within your control. One action can inspire the next person, creating a domino effect capable of producing meaningful change.
Quote of the Episode
“That little thing might inspire somebody else to do another little thing. And then it just keeps building on itself.”
— Alex Payne
That may be the standard in its simplest form: start small, take responsibility, keep moving, and give someone else a reason to move forward too.
