00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:02.240
Hello, and welcome to the Venture Boldly Podcast.
00:00:02.319 --> 00:00:08.160
I'm Brendan Craig, State President with First Interstate Bank, and your guest host for today's conversation.
00:00:08.480 --> 00:00:11.519
Downtowns are often described as the heart of a community.
00:00:11.679 --> 00:00:20.719
They're where people gather, where visitors form their first impressions, and where locally owned businesses help create a sense of place that can't be replicated anywhere else.
00:00:21.039 --> 00:00:26.000
For independent retailers, success requires more than simply opening the doors.
00:00:26.160 --> 00:00:32.240
It takes creativity, resilience, and a willingness to adapt as consumer habits and communities evolve.
00:00:33.119 --> 00:00:37.039
Joining us today is Beth Kornick, co-owner of Princess and Buck.
00:00:37.200 --> 00:00:49.679
Beth is a retail entrepreneur whose career spans retail, hospitality, art, education, and community engagement, giving her a unique perspective on creating memorable customer experiences.
00:00:50.560 --> 00:00:57.280
Together with her team, she has helped build Princess and Buck into one of downtown Calisbell's most distinctive shopping destinations.
00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:02.079
Well, Beth, welcome to Venture Boldly.
00:01:02.159 --> 00:01:03.039
We appreciate you being here.
00:01:03.359 --> 00:01:03.600
Thank you.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:04.719
So excited to be here.
00:01:05.040 --> 00:01:05.359
Excellent.
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:09.120
Well, I'd like to maybe start with your story and Princess and Buck.
00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:22.319
For those who may not be familiar with Princess and Buck, will you tell us about the business and your journey as a retail entrepreneur and maybe in there touch on what inspired you to create the store and what's the type of experience you hope your customers have when they visit?
00:01:22.719 --> 00:01:23.359
Yeah, that's a lot.
00:01:23.439 --> 00:01:24.239
But that's a lot.
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:26.640
So answer all of that in order if you could.
00:01:26.959 --> 00:01:28.799
I started in retail when I was very young.
00:01:28.879 --> 00:01:36.560
I've always been interested in front-facing hospitality services and just always loved having that customer interaction.
00:01:36.719 --> 00:01:43.280
I grew up part in Montana and part in Arizona in a small uh sort of touristy town.
00:01:43.359 --> 00:01:49.040
And so there were a lot of opportunities to meet unique people from around the world, and that was always really fun for me.
00:01:49.359 --> 00:01:55.280
The way that Princess and Buck actually came about, my business partner Kyle and I met through Rotary, which is a service organization.
00:01:55.680 --> 00:01:56.799
Right here in Cowlspell.
00:01:56.959 --> 00:01:57.120
Yes.
00:01:57.280 --> 00:01:57.760
Okay, excellent.
00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:08.560
And we're in separate clubs, but we were presidents of our respective clubs at the same time, and that created a lot of opportunity for us to co-president and how to integrate our clubs into more service projects together.
00:02:08.800 --> 00:02:08.879
Sure.
00:02:09.199 --> 00:02:20.879
So we became friends through that aspect, and then we traveled a lot through Rotary, and we just discovered that we both had a love for retail and interesting stories and creating spaces where people feel comfortable.
00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:30.879
And so we just sort of joked about it for years about opening a business in Callis Bell and how uh we felt like our idea was something that Calisbell could be open to.
00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:48.639
And then just one day we happened to see a for lease sign in the window of our current location, and it all just snowballed from there and very quickly um we opened in November of 2024, and we're just having a great time.
00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:50.479
So it's been about a year and a half.
00:02:50.639 --> 00:03:06.479
We're heading into our second summer season, and uh the experience that we hope customers have when they walk through the door is uh one of awe and amazement, and also just this feeling of comfort and welcoming.
00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:07.520
Yeah, excellent.
00:03:07.680 --> 00:03:11.120
And I I was perusing your website uh and it was interesting.
00:03:11.280 --> 00:03:16.400
I found that it was the first brick building in Calisbell, which was made originally a bank of all things.
00:03:16.479 --> 00:03:18.639
And so you have a photo booth that's in the original vault.
00:03:19.039 --> 00:03:20.159
Yeah, we had this great vault.
00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:30.960
After it was a bank for about 10 years, a jewelry store moved in, and that jewelry store was Wheeler Jewelry, and they were there for over a hundred years, and they used the vault, obviously.
00:03:31.199 --> 00:03:37.039
We did not have a use for the vault, but we wanted to do something to honor its history and uniqueness.
00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:46.960
And so we worked with pixelated gigs and created this really fun interactive photo booth inside, and we change it up for the seasons and different things like that.
00:03:47.199 --> 00:03:52.479
For the 4th of July, we'll have it all decked out and people can come in and just take a photo.
00:03:52.639 --> 00:04:03.759
We'll have a printer on the fourth, and uh, but normally what they do is they just text it or email it to themselves, and it's just sort of a fun thing that we can offer just to make that experience even more exciting and fun.
00:04:04.159 --> 00:04:05.199
Yeah, it's very neat.
00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:08.080
Uh so let's talk about you mentioned Callus Spell.
00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:10.319
You could have chosen to locate your business anywhere.
00:04:10.479 --> 00:04:13.680
What made downtown Calspell the right fit for Princess and Buck?
00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:20.480
And why do you believe a vibrant downtown retail district is important to the identity and economic health of a community?
00:04:20.800 --> 00:04:23.519
Well, downtown Kallispell is our home.
00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:26.879
You know, we've lived here for over 20 years.
00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:38.480
We've raised our children here, and I just felt like I had actually looked at a business in Whitefish, and it just didn't fit my lifestyle.
00:04:38.639 --> 00:04:41.439
And Kyle finally said, don't buy a business in Whitefish.
00:04:41.519 --> 00:04:42.800
Kallispell is your community.
00:04:42.879 --> 00:04:43.040
Yeah.
00:04:43.199 --> 00:04:44.079
And it is my community.
00:04:44.240 --> 00:04:54.240
It's where my kids went to school, it's where I, you know, have worked for the past 20 years, it's where all of my friendships are based, and it really just is my community.
00:04:54.480 --> 00:05:01.600
And so the focus shifted to Kalispell right away, and we realized that this downtown is vibrant.
00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:18.399
There are a lot of great uh shops and art galleries and restaurants coming up and different things that we wanted to be a part of helping those things grow and blossom and really get our downtown to be a more walkable, vibrant, fun place for families to come?
00:05:18.560 --> 00:05:19.519
Aaron Powell Yeah, well, excellent.
00:05:19.680 --> 00:05:22.639
Well, the energy certainly is incredible in downtown Callispo.
00:05:22.879 --> 00:05:26.800
The momentum continues to be in place for the community, which we're excited about.
00:05:27.040 --> 00:05:31.680
And so creating a sense of place, locally owned businesses do more than sell products.
00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:32.720
I think we know that.
00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:35.600
They help create a sense of place and local identity.
00:05:35.839 --> 00:05:42.079
What role do you think downtown retailers play in shaping the experience residents and visitors have when they come to Callisville?
00:05:42.639 --> 00:05:50.240
Well, I think that we are all ambassadors to our place, to this beautiful valley that we live in and to all the things that we have to offer.
00:05:50.399 --> 00:05:52.800
Often people are shopping in the store.
00:05:52.959 --> 00:06:05.839
They're looking for a trinket or something to take home as a souvenir of their time here, but they're also asking us as the locals who live here, what are the things that we really enjoy doing?
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:08.319
What are the places that they shouldn't miss?
00:06:08.480 --> 00:06:12.879
And so Kyle and I actually created a card called Princess and Buck's Favorites.
00:06:12.959 --> 00:06:24.399
And we list a few, we list a few different types of businesses, places to shop, places to eat, places that have patios if you want to sit out on the patio and have a cocktail.
00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:32.160
And we just have a few of those bulleted on a card that we hand out, but then we also talk up all of the different other places.
00:06:32.319 --> 00:06:39.600
But we have the museum on there, we have the Conrad Mansion, a couple different coffee shops, a couple different breweries, and a few different stores.
00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:46.800
And so it's just really kind of a fun way to start that conversation because people inevitably ask, you know, where should we go for dinner?
00:06:46.959 --> 00:06:47.839
Where should we go for lunch?
00:06:48.079 --> 00:06:50.160
What's the best hike that we should take?
00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:51.759
And, you know, what have we missed?
00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:55.279
We've gone to Glacier, you know, we've done Flathead Lake.
00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:56.240
What else do we need to see?
00:06:56.399 --> 00:07:00.240
And so we really do try to curate those experiences for people.
00:07:00.639 --> 00:07:03.680
Don't worry, we're not giving away any of our secret spots.
00:07:03.759 --> 00:07:12.639
Yeah none of those secret spots, but we do tend to um try to pick out some of those hidden gems that that people may not find on their regular path.
00:07:12.959 --> 00:07:13.519
Yeah, absolutely.
00:07:13.600 --> 00:07:19.040
And I appreciate that many of those businesses that you mentioned are all walking distance right here in the downtown corridor.
00:07:19.360 --> 00:07:19.519
Correct.
00:07:19.759 --> 00:07:22.399
And it's been said community over competition.
00:07:22.560 --> 00:07:26.160
You've often talked about the idea of community over competition.
00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:28.720
What does that philosophy mean to you?
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:34.319
And how have collaboration and relationships among local businesses helped strengthen downtown Kalispell?
00:07:34.639 --> 00:07:38.639
Well, I think we're doing a really good job with the new Downtown Forward Coalition.
00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:48.879
Um, lots of businesses have come together to try to just focus on the downtown and and really bring people down to see how great it is.
00:07:49.040 --> 00:07:56.160
I can't tell you how many times a local will come into my store and say, wow, I haven't been downtown in years.
00:07:56.399 --> 00:07:58.160
There's a lot of stuff happening down here.
00:07:58.319 --> 00:08:09.680
And so we really want people to know that we are bringing fun and vibrant ideas and community action to the downtown corridor.
00:08:09.839 --> 00:08:11.040
And we want people to come down.
00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:14.720
We're excited for the uh community concerts that are gonna be starting next week.
00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:19.600
And we at Princess and Buck are gonna be open on those Wednesday nights until eight.
00:08:19.839 --> 00:08:22.959
We're gonna be trying to make some fun times for people.
00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:25.920
Not everybody can shop between the hours of 10 and 5.
00:08:26.079 --> 00:08:31.040
You know, we all have jobs, we all have children in in um activities and things like that.
00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:33.759
And so we try to do this at least once a month.
00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:38.639
Uh, we try to stay open a little bit later for people who may not be able to get downtown.
00:08:38.879 --> 00:08:43.039
We offer online shopping and then you can just swing in and pick it up in the store.
00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:52.639
But community over competition means all of these businesses working together to make the best community that we can for all of the people that live here and all of the people that we want to serve.
00:08:52.799 --> 00:09:02.399
Um, it means that just because there is another boutique on the street that might sell similar things, that doesn't mean that we're we're competing with each other.
00:09:02.559 --> 00:09:06.639
I feel like the more vibrant businesses that are downtown, the more people are going to come.
00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:07.600
Absolutely.
00:09:07.759 --> 00:09:10.559
You know, you see the same model even with car dealerships, for instance.
00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:16.000
Oftentimes you'll see their competitors, but they all are located in the same a similar area.
00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:16.559
Yeah.
00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:21.279
And then I think the exactly what you said, the goal is just to bring more people uh downtown.
00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:30.399
And what I appreciate is just the community part of this conversation as you and all the other entrepreneurs, I'm assuming friendships are in place amongst all of you up and down Main Street.
00:09:30.720 --> 00:09:30.879
Yes.
00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:40.159
Again, Kyle and I are fairly new, but we have known several of the business owners in previous lives, and then we are trying to create those friendships with other people.
00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:41.600
Yes, especially on our block.
00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:45.679
We know a lot of the business owners and we have a great relationship.
00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:47.600
We try to help each other out.
00:09:47.759 --> 00:09:51.600
We send each other to the other businesses if they're looking for something in particular.
00:09:51.759 --> 00:10:01.840
And especially if they if we don't have what they're looking for and I know the other store might, I'm happily sending them down to the other store because I want them to know that Callispill is a great place to come and shop and hang out.
00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:02.799
Yeah, that's excellent.
00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:10.159
Well, uh boy, just uh in the last couple of weeks, my wife stopped here in the bank where I work and said, Hey, you want to walk downtown?
00:10:10.320 --> 00:10:12.240
I said, Absolutely, we're right here downtown.
00:10:12.320 --> 00:10:12.639
Let's go.
00:10:12.799 --> 00:10:15.120
And we stopped at the coffee shop right next at next.
00:10:15.440 --> 00:10:15.840
Bird and Billy.
00:10:15.919 --> 00:10:19.519
Yep, Bert and Billy, grabbed a coffee, and then we came out and we walked.
00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:20.799
We I had not been in your store.
00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:22.320
So I said, No, we haven't been in here.
00:10:22.399 --> 00:10:23.039
Let's check this out.
00:10:23.279 --> 00:10:24.639
So it was a neat experience.
00:10:24.879 --> 00:10:28.240
Just tell us a little bit about what your offerings are in the store.
00:10:28.639 --> 00:10:31.679
So we have men's and women's clothing accessories.
00:10:31.919 --> 00:10:34.240
We have unique gift items.
00:10:34.399 --> 00:10:37.840
We like to say that we brought a little bit of SAS back to Main Street.
00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:40.879
We have some things that maybe have some naughty words on them.
00:10:41.120 --> 00:10:53.440
We have a little bit of a sarcastic, I kind of like to say a rock and roll bent to our store, but you don't want to say we have something for everyone because you can't be everything for everyone.
00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:55.919
But we uh have very unique items.
00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:02.559
We try to source things that other stores don't have, even though um, you know, that's not always possible.
00:11:02.799 --> 00:11:08.320
There is some crossover sometimes, especially with how easy it is to shop wholesale now with online.
00:11:08.720 --> 00:11:17.200
You used to have to go to market and buy it in person and all of those things, but now it's really easy to curate a unique experience.
00:11:17.440 --> 00:11:19.600
Hopefully that's what we're trying to do.
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:23.519
We want it to be a place that makes you smile, maybe makes you giggle a little bit.
00:11:23.679 --> 00:11:27.679
We want it to be the place that you think of when you need a unique gift for somebody.
00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:35.279
And so we're trying to create that type of space, but we also have a an area for people who may not be the biggest shoppers.
00:11:35.440 --> 00:11:42.159
We have a place where they can sit and hang out, we'll offer you a beverage while your best friend or wife or husband shops.
00:11:42.399 --> 00:11:43.840
You can sit and hang out.
00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:47.279
We just want to create a space that is welcoming.
00:11:47.519 --> 00:11:55.840
We are not a snobby high-end boutique that, you know, we're gonna look down our noses at anybody that walks in.
00:11:56.080 --> 00:12:05.200
We are super, super excited to have you come in our doors and we want to help you find the best gift that you're looking for or that treasure that you might want for yourself.
00:12:05.600 --> 00:12:05.759
Yeah.
00:12:05.840 --> 00:12:08.399
And I agree with all that from when we walked through the store.
00:12:08.559 --> 00:12:10.399
You had a good card stock in the back, too.
00:12:10.559 --> 00:12:12.240
I I was appreciative of that.
00:12:12.480 --> 00:12:16.559
And so what a what a good vibe you've created there right on on Main Street.
00:12:16.960 --> 00:12:20.799
Let's let's pivot a little bit and talk about investing in downtown's future.
00:12:20.960 --> 00:12:22.320
You touched on this briefly.
00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:27.840
You're an enthusiastic supporter of both the Calisbell Chamber and the Downtown Calisbell Forward Initiative.
00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:28.399
Absolutely.
00:12:28.799 --> 00:12:41.360
Why is the chamber membership important to you, and how do you see downtown Calisbell Forward enhancing the downtown business environment, especially as the previous Calisbell Downtown Association transitioned recently into the chamber?
00:12:41.759 --> 00:12:55.919
Yeah, that was a little bit tough for a minute, but again, those core members of businesses came together, decided that that wasn't something that we could let go, and picked it up and ran with it.
00:12:56.080 --> 00:12:59.279
And those relationships are everything for downtown.
00:12:59.440 --> 00:13:03.519
If you don't know the other businesses, you're not looking out for each other.
00:13:03.679 --> 00:13:11.679
We had somebody call me the other day to get the number of another business owner because they heard her alarm going off and they couldn't get a hold of her.
00:13:11.759 --> 00:13:13.840
And so it's just looking out for each other.
00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:20.240
It's knowing where to send somebody when they're looking for a specific thing because you know that other business has that specific thing.
00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:26.559
And the chamber has played a huge role in helping Princess and Buck get face forward with the community.
00:13:26.639 --> 00:13:34.159
Um, they've always been there from day one to support us and to help us in anything that we needed to create this business.
00:13:34.399 --> 00:13:43.279
They're always loudly and proudly proclaiming all of the amazing businesses in the area, including Princess and Buck, and we're so grateful for that.
00:13:43.600 --> 00:13:49.440
The people that work at the chamber are very involved in this community and they want to see it succeed.
00:13:49.600 --> 00:14:00.320
And so I think that together with the Downtown Forward, um, we can all work together towards the same goal and and create something amazing in Kallispell.
00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:04.720
Not that we haven't been amazing, but you know, COVID sort of took a toll on everything.
00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:22.559
And so I really feel like a lot of people just turned to online shopping and the ease and convenience of that, but they're really missing out, they're really missing out on the connections and the the heart of downtown Kallispell and the people that make this community what it is.
00:14:22.799 --> 00:14:37.600
And for every uh dollar that somebody spends at a local store, 60% of that stays in the local community, goes back to support those businesses and those people that work here and create such a thriving town.
00:14:37.759 --> 00:14:42.159
When you buy from a box store or you buy online, those dollars don't stay here.
00:14:42.240 --> 00:15:00.720
And so I think it's really important for the chamber and the downtown coalition to really help people understand that by shopping locally, you are supporting the people that you play baseball with, the people that are educating your children, the people that are um sitting next to you in church on Sunday.
00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:03.919
And you don't get that when you shop non-locally.
00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:21.200
And so, and I'm not saying you can't shop non-locally, everyone does, but really think about your choices when you are shopping and remember that these places in downtown Calisbell and the surrounding streets are really focused on your community and they're here for a reason.
00:15:21.279 --> 00:15:24.159
And hopefully the community will support them back.
00:15:24.559 --> 00:15:32.559
Yeah, boy, that was uh very well said, and I'm appreciative of it because everything you just said encapsulates a vibrant downtown.
00:15:32.799 --> 00:15:37.600
When people are intentional about being part of the community, the community thrives.
00:15:37.759 --> 00:15:39.279
And uh so very appreciative.
00:15:39.440 --> 00:15:41.679
I'll also give a shout out to the Cowl Spell Chamber.
00:15:41.759 --> 00:15:49.759
They're located right here in our first Interstate Bank building, and so we get to see their staff uh daily uh coming and going and how busy they are.
00:15:49.919 --> 00:15:54.559
They're always got their coolers full of supplies and they're setting up and supporting businesses.
00:15:54.639 --> 00:15:56.399
And so I concur with everything you said there.
00:15:56.559 --> 00:16:04.480
Lorraine and her team are just a bunch of rock stars, and we're thankful for them, and we're appreciative that we get to see them in our building on a daily basis.
00:16:04.879 --> 00:16:10.720
Well, uh wrapping up and looking ahead, uh, what excites you most about the future of downtown Calspell?
00:16:10.799 --> 00:16:17.840
And what would you like residents and community leaders to understand about supporting local businesses and maintaining a thriving downtown?
00:16:18.480 --> 00:16:25.919
I think it's really important that we just keep talking about downtown and we just keep creating events that are going to bring people downtown.
00:16:26.159 --> 00:16:49.679
I know the concerts in the park are a great draw for people, and I think that if we can get more businesses to try to stay open a little bit later on those nights so that people maybe can pick a concert to go to and then take a little gander down the street and do a little pop into a boutique or do a little pop into a coffee shop and grab a cookie or grab an ice cream at Sweet Peaks.
00:16:49.919 --> 00:17:00.480
I think that just bringing out that community and seeing your neighbors and friends walking down the street and waving and hello, and it's bringing that that Norman Rockwell vibe, if you will, back to back to Main Street.
00:17:00.559 --> 00:17:05.839
And I really, I really feel like we're missing a little bit of that, but I'm hoping that we can bring that back.
00:17:06.160 --> 00:17:12.400
And I think that a thriving downtown creates a thriving community no matter what.
00:17:12.640 --> 00:17:22.720
You know, people will come into our business and ask for a donation for something for one of their causes, which we are fully on board to support our local causes.
00:17:22.880 --> 00:17:30.000
But it's also sometimes a little bit frustrating because you've never seen these people before until they want to ask for money.
00:17:30.079 --> 00:17:42.960
And so it's it's just about creating the voice that everybody knows we're here and we're here for our community, and please come support us and bring your friends and walk around.
00:17:43.119 --> 00:17:45.359
I think walkability is a huge thing.
00:17:45.519 --> 00:17:56.960
And I think that if people can walk downtown, grab a coffee, grab a cocktail, sit on the sidewalk, you know, the the summer in the flathead is the most gorgeous place to be.
00:17:57.039 --> 00:18:13.440
And so I really feel like if we can encapsulate that in our downtown, and you know, we have our flowers out and we have all of the friendly faces in all of the places, and our doors are open, and just come on down and bring your family and enjoy all of the things that downtown Kalispell has to offer.
00:18:13.839 --> 00:18:14.880
Boy, I couldn't agree more.
00:18:15.200 --> 00:18:20.799
June, July, August, and even September are just such a wonderful time to be downtown Kalispell.
00:18:20.960 --> 00:18:21.920
Concerts in the park.
00:18:22.000 --> 00:18:26.720
You have the two breweries, uh Sunrift and Bias are kind of the bookends, if you will, on Mainstone.
00:18:27.759 --> 00:18:28.720
Yeah, Parkline Trail.
00:18:28.799 --> 00:18:32.240
There's a lot of really good energy to your point.
00:18:32.400 --> 00:18:34.880
You can grab an ice cream cone, you can go grab a cookie, coffee.
00:18:35.359 --> 00:18:36.319
Go check out some cool art.
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:36.960
Yeah.
00:18:37.119 --> 00:18:40.960
It's just a great, great downtown and with such wonderful momentum.
00:18:41.279 --> 00:18:44.640
Well, Beth, thank you for joining us and for sharing your story and perspective.
