Matt Tyner is Chief Marketing Officer at Bone Dry Roofing, one of the largest family-owned residential roofing contractors in the United States, with 15 years in home services marketing behind him. His argument on this episode is uncomfortable for a career digital marketer: lead generation done brilliantly can still be worthless, and the home services industry spent a decade over-investing in the channels he knows best.
"We can acquire leads and opportunities all day long, but if we're not able to make a promise and ultimately keep that promise throughout the entire customer journey... then everything you're doing is garbage."
Read the full episode recap: Matt Tyner on Why Marketing Makes the Promise and Operations Keeps It. A shorter cut of his two sharpest points is in A Promise You Cannot Keep Is Garbage.
What Matt and Jeremy cover
- The one constant across 15 years of marketing: change. Basic SEO got you rankings 15 years ago; now you optimize for AI and organic at the same time, and businesses die every day because they stop advancing.
- Why the daily goal in home services is trust, not leads. Marketing makes the promise, operations keeps it, and "if we're not dialed in on that delivery, then everything we just promised is fake."
- The anti-sales approach: no inflated-then-discounted offers. Discounts for medical personnel, first responders and teachers come out of margin.
- The Bone Dry Experience as the mission filter. Two customers, internal and external, and one word that matters most: consistency.
- Why Matt will not co-market with other home service companies, even for the SEO and mailer savings. He cannot control their customer experience, and brand is paramount.
- Community engagement as corporate responsibility: a full-time community engagement manager, Humane Society partnerships, a free-roof program for veterans with Owens Corning, LED movie trucks for HOAs and Little Leagues.
- The confession from a digital marketer: "We've over-rotated to digital and forgot what built the reputations that the business thrives on."
- Marketing ideas come from everyone in the company, not just the marketing team. "If it's a good idea, maybe let's give it a try."
Matt was named CMO in December 2023 after roles at Max Service Group, Valve+Meter and Nelson Comfort, per Roofing Contractor.
Do this in the next week
- Respond to every review. A negative review is a customer conversation, not a criticism to ignore. If you screwed up, make it right.
- Find a parade, sign up, get your truck in it and throw candy out the window.
- Put a banner in a Little League outfield for about $500.
- Be visible and be trusted, so that when the roof finally has to be replaced, they call you. "No one wants to replace the roof. It's not cool."
