What if the fear driving our exhaustion, anxiety, and self-protection is actually pointing us toward a false view of ourselves or God? We continue our conversation with Jamie Winship about discovering our true and specific identity, learning to tell the truth about our fears, and allowing confession to lead us toward repentance and transformation. We explore why living from a false identity keeps us self-focused and self-protective, while knowing who God created us to be frees us to become more other-focused and loving. Jamie also shares a practical daily discipline of releasing burdens to God, receiving what He has for us today, and remembering that today is enough. Together, we unpack how fear can serve as a directional signal, how community helps us discern what God is inviting us into, and why God's presence—not our performance—is the foundation of transformation.
What We Learned
- The false self is driven by fear, self-protection, and self-promotion, while the true self is able to live with other-focused, self-emptying, unconditional love.
- Identity is described as the organizing principle of every living system; when we live from our true identity, we become reciprocal and connected rather than isolated and self-focused.
- Knowing our identity goes beyond being a child of God or being filled with the Holy Spirit; we can also discover the specific ways God has uniquely designed us to contribute and serve.
- Confession is more than saying "I'm sorry"—it is telling the truth about what we actually believe, including our fears, our view of God, and our sense of separation from Him.
- Truth telling can lead to repentance, mind change, and ultimately transformation because we cannot change what we refuse to acknowledge.
- Fear is a directional signal, not a decision maker. When fear surfaces, we can ask God, "What am I afraid of?" and examine what the fear reveals about what we believe about God, ourselves, or others.
- A daily practice of releasing burdens and lies to God, then receiving what He has for us that day, helps us live in the truth that today is enough.
- Discernment becomes clearer when we stop assuming every opportunity is an assignment from God, identify what makes our hearts come alive, and remain open to the changing seasons of what He invites us into.

00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:10.080
So, Jamie and I recorded this conversation a while back, but it feels even more relevant now than it did then.
00:00:10.240 --> 00:00:23.039
We talked about the difference between living out of fear versus living from the truth of who God says we are, and how so much of our exhaustion, our striving, our anxiety comes from trying to protect a false version of ourselves.
00:00:23.280 --> 00:00:29.440
One of the things that keeps sticking with me is Jamie's reminder that transformation doesn't start with pretending we're okay.
00:00:29.519 --> 00:00:30.960
It starts with telling the truth.
00:00:31.120 --> 00:00:41.280
And I think this conversation has a way of slowing us down, helping us breathe again, and reminding us that God is actually with us in the middle of it all.
00:00:41.359 --> 00:00:44.399
So here's part two of my conversation with Jamie Winchet.
00:00:57.200 --> 00:00:58.960
Welcome to the True Face Podcast.
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:05.120
My name's Robbie Engel, and I'll be your guide as we have conversations about what we can learn from what's going on in our lives.
00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:14.799
As we continue this second conversation with Jamie Winchip, we're gonna continue to unpack where we get stuck in our relationships with God and others.
00:01:14.959 --> 00:01:18.079
And at TrueFace.org, we've got resources to help you.
00:01:18.159 --> 00:01:28.879
And I talk about the TrueFace journey in a nine-month framework to experience these types of communities that are safe enough and authentic enough to for us to wrestle with how we see God and see ourselves.
00:01:28.959 --> 00:01:40.959
So check it out at TrueFace.org or on the app, the True Face Life app, and enjoy as we jump in to the continuation of my conversation with Jamie Winchip.
00:01:41.680 --> 00:01:43.760
But you've got to learn to hear my voice.
00:01:43.840 --> 00:01:46.879
And so that so it wasn't like that all the time.
00:01:47.040 --> 00:01:58.560
In fact, when I when I left the police department, you know, after my little discussion with the CIA, and I went to grad school, I took a year of Bible in seminary.
00:01:58.719 --> 00:02:03.359
I wanted to, and that hurt me more than anything I'd ever done.
00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:15.840
Because what happened was everything I knew down in my gut, so to speak, just my beautiful relationship with Christ was so it was so Hebraic, we'll call it.
00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:17.840
It was so whole all of me.
00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:22.639
And then I got into seminary and it became Hellenistic, it just became my brain.
00:02:22.960 --> 00:02:24.479
It was really fascinating.
00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:29.680
And I got I fell in love with the intellectual side of the apologetics and polemics.
00:02:29.840 --> 00:02:33.680
And then when we moved into the Muslim world, I was ineffective.
00:02:35.039 --> 00:02:40.400
Because all I knew how to do at that point was debate Muslims on the Quran and the Bible.
00:02:42.319 --> 00:02:44.879
And it was it was so disheartening.
00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:48.879
It was like God didn't come with us into the Muslim world.
00:02:49.280 --> 00:03:02.159
And it took five years of that frustration for God to say to me, five years of like, wow, we are failures in this, we are it's not working.
00:03:02.400 --> 00:03:05.759
Um, I got arrested and put on trial, all this stuff going on.
00:03:05.840 --> 00:03:07.439
It's like, where did God go?
00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:11.120
And it wasn't that it wasn't where did God go, it's where did I go?
00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:14.479
And I went from my heart back into my head.
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:17.039
That's that's where I went.
00:03:17.280 --> 00:03:23.599
And it took five years before I just in desperation, I said to God, I I stopped hearing him.
00:03:24.319 --> 00:03:28.560
But I it he was he was still speaking, I just wasn't listening anymore.
00:03:28.800 --> 00:03:33.840
And I think this is very biblical pattern you see in scripture.
00:03:34.080 --> 00:03:42.159
People they stop listening, like David when it says David inquired of the Lord, and then as opposed to when the passage starts with, and David thought to himself.
00:03:42.400 --> 00:03:50.800
Those are the when you see those two phrases and David inquired of the Lord, he makes these amazing, brave decisions, courageous decisions.
00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:58.080
And when he thought to himself, he moves into immediate self-protection and self-promotion, and it destroys him and his men.
00:03:58.479 --> 00:04:07.520
And so at those five years, the Lord, in that darkness of that, the Lord taught me this stop self-protecting and self-promoting.
00:04:07.840 --> 00:04:13.599
This is not about how smart you are, it's not about how well you can out-argue a Muslim.
00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:17.759
This is about other focused, self-emptying, unconditional love for your enemy.
00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:18.879
That's what this is about.
00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:20.959
That's what it is, and it's down here.
00:04:21.839 --> 00:04:24.079
Which is connected to our identity.
00:04:24.800 --> 00:04:28.399
Can we be other self-focused and self- not self-promoting without identity?
00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:34.079
Unpack for us how that and can we know our specific identity without listening and hearing from God?
00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:36.480
Oh, that's that's exactly right.
00:04:36.639 --> 00:04:37.519
Yeah, yeah.
00:04:37.759 --> 00:04:44.240
So, yeah, only the true you can be other focused, self-emptying, unconditional love towards your enemy.
00:04:44.399 --> 00:04:48.399
Only, only the part of you that God created can be that.
00:04:48.639 --> 00:04:56.079
The false me, the invented me, the ego me, the self-protection, the shadow me can only be self-focused.
00:04:56.319 --> 00:04:59.519
That's all it'll ever do is self-focus and self-protect.
00:04:59.680 --> 00:05:02.319
And as soon as a person starts talking, you can hear it.
00:05:02.480 --> 00:05:04.720
You can hear that self-protection and self-promotion.
00:05:05.040 --> 00:05:07.519
Not there, they don't have to be bragging and all that.
00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:11.040
It's just, it's just the number one goal of my life is my own safety.
00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:11.839
That's it.
00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:15.199
And you can hear whole communities talk like this.
00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:17.920
And Christ is saying the opposite.
00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:25.040
He's he, you know, he didn't consider having something to be exploited, but he he emptied himself for who?
00:05:25.199 --> 00:05:27.120
For the for his enemy, you know?
00:05:27.360 --> 00:05:31.680
And so, yeah, so the true me longs to be other focused.
00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:33.839
It's so, it's so beautiful.
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:39.680
My true, the true me longs to be other focused and self-emptying and loving.
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.319
Um, the false me, motivated by fear, turns inward.
00:05:44.399 --> 00:05:46.959
And so here's here's just the the main idea.
00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:49.759
It's the rule of it's the rule of the whole universe.
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.879
All living systems can only organize around identity.
00:05:55.199 --> 00:06:01.439
Identity is the only organizing principle in the universe of all any living system.
00:06:02.560 --> 00:06:05.920
So identity what's that?
00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:10.720
Unpack that, that identity is the organizing thing.
00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:22.879
Okay, so so like for from a cell to a human to an orange tree, a healthy living system is organized around the truth of its identity.
00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:29.439
A good tree, Jesus calls it, can produce only produce good fruit, and a bad tree, bad fruit.
00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:45.920
So if you have a cell, we start at the cellular level, if you have a cell that's operating in the in its true nature, its true capacity, its true identity, it's it's it's connected and reciprocal with everything around it all the time.
00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:56.000
And it it's it's an open living system, it's an open system, and it will do whatever it takes to contribute to the whole thing working, right?
00:06:56.160 --> 00:06:56.639
All of it.
00:06:56.720 --> 00:07:05.759
It never sees itself as a separate piece, it never sees itself as isolated, and its goal is never to move away and be by itself.
00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:11.199
This is why God said it's not good for man to be alone, it's not good for people to be isolated.
00:07:11.360 --> 00:07:19.279
But when that cell becomes, when it's cell, the identity of the cell becomes corrupted, it becomes cancer.
00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:22.879
The identity is now cancer, it's not cell, it's cancer.
00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:29.839
And what it does is it becomes a closed system and it begins to devour everything around it.
00:07:30.800 --> 00:07:31.279
Right?
00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:38.800
And so when a human is operating in the truth of who they are, they're reciprocal.
00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:45.040
They they're they will only be other focused because they realize to live separate is to die.
00:07:46.319 --> 00:07:49.920
Right now, uh there's a parsing here.
00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:53.279
I don't know how to articulate this or ask it.
00:07:53.519 --> 00:07:58.319
Um, the fruit of the spirit is these things of love, joy, peace, patience, others focus.
00:07:58.480 --> 00:08:08.720
So help me understand how how you're articulating the difference between true self, meaning righteous, imparted with the Holy Spirit, because that there's dynamics here.
00:08:08.800 --> 00:08:13.360
Uh, true face has majored on what I would say is shared identity.
00:08:13.600 --> 00:08:17.759
You and I are we are saints who occasionally sin, not sinners striving to be saints.
00:08:17.839 --> 00:08:19.040
You and I are sons.
00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:25.600
What your teaching has really stretched me and been a blessing for is on the specific identity.
00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:30.079
It's not enough to know because he doesn't see Jamie as son one and Robbie as son two.
00:08:30.560 --> 00:08:38.320
He says, No, like you are imparted with my righteousness, you are saints, you are part of the priesthood, the Holy Spirit is in you.
00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:47.600
And Jamie is a left arm ligament as part of the body, and I've made him as the specific identity, and Robbie is an activator who's this and that.
00:08:47.759 --> 00:08:49.919
And uh, you know, we're specific.
00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:51.679
Do we know our specific identity?
00:08:51.919 --> 00:09:04.240
So unpack, I'm I'm trying to ar understand like when we know our true identity, we're speaking to we are Christ in us, and therefore the fruit of the spirit is others focused.
00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:10.879
But there's a difference in that is it our specific identity that looks differently as part of the body of Christ?
00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:11.519
Yeah.
00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:12.240
So right.
00:09:12.399 --> 00:09:18.559
So for example, um, yeah, you're saying it like, so like when Paul gives the example of the body, right?
00:09:18.639 --> 00:09:20.799
There's these distinct parts, right?
00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:26.960
And so the one, so you know, I'm a hand and you're a hand or whatever, or or a leg or whatever.
00:09:27.120 --> 00:09:34.960
And so we want to operate so the hand identity can be working in love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, and so can the leg.
00:09:35.360 --> 00:09:42.399
But unless they're working together, right, in their uniqueness, it's not a body, right?
00:09:42.720 --> 00:09:43.519
That's the key.
00:09:43.679 --> 00:10:04.879
And so, and and I'm I'm I'm this is what's I think really hurting the church, hurt you know, the church is is we're not it in a imagine in a city, so in our our in our particular church, so like our staff, if you went around when when we have a new person come in or something, and the the pastor will say, Introduce yourself, we don't, we don't say our name.
00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:07.679
We don't say like Jamie, and I'm in charge of outreach.
00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:08.559
We don't say that.
00:10:08.720 --> 00:10:09.840
I I will say my name.
00:10:09.919 --> 00:10:14.000
My name is Jamie, and in the kingdom of God, I'm an untire of knots.
00:10:14.399 --> 00:10:16.080
That's my identity in the kingdom.
00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:17.600
I'm an untire of knots.
00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:23.200
Okay, as an untire of knots, I'm filled with love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, generous, self-control.
00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:27.440
But what are you gonna do with the untire of knots identity, right?
00:10:27.600 --> 00:10:30.320
You're gonna put them in your conflict areas in your city.
00:10:30.480 --> 00:10:33.279
That's what you're gonna do with that beautiful identity, right?
00:10:33.440 --> 00:10:40.559
And so the next person, um uh, my name is whatever, and I'm a lover of the guilty.
00:10:41.279 --> 00:10:42.399
That's his identity.
00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:43.759
I'm a lover of the guilty.
00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:51.279
Okay, so he's a son of God, he's filled with the Holy Spirit, he's filled with love, joy, but uniquely he loves the guilty.
00:10:51.600 --> 00:10:55.519
Where do you it tells you where this person needs to be?
00:10:55.679 --> 00:11:01.840
Like, where would you put this lover of the guilty with a bunch of discipling a bunch of very biblical people?
00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:04.720
No, he would be super frustrated.
00:11:04.879 --> 00:11:08.080
All he would be doing is trying to get them interested in guilty people.
00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:11.039
Like, and it would produce it would cause trouble.
00:11:11.200 --> 00:11:13.200
So put that guy in the prison ministry.
00:11:13.360 --> 00:11:14.240
Unbelievable.
00:11:14.399 --> 00:11:16.159
He's unbelievable in there.
00:11:16.320 --> 00:11:28.559
So even if I went into a prison ministry and talked to a person and that loves it in there, I would guess that their identity has something to do with the lost or the, you know, do you see what I mean?
00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:30.879
And their identity will gravitate towards that.
00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:38.399
But boy, you should when I watch people whose identity is not what they're doing, it's rough.
00:11:39.039 --> 00:11:47.759
It causes silos, it causes competition in teams, and it's everywhere in the church, but it's everywhere in everywhere.
00:11:48.000 --> 00:12:06.879
Everything is comparison, and so um, so just to know my own identity is to know not just I'm a child of God and I'm filled with the Holy Spirit, but where uniquely, and it's not one spot, it's a range of places, but where does that thing come alive?
00:12:07.120 --> 00:12:16.960
And when we when we do this with middle schoolers, it like you can almost pick their vocation once they understand this, just by listening to them to start to talk.
00:12:17.200 --> 00:12:21.600
You're like, wow, I see where you're going, I see the direction you're going in.
00:12:21.679 --> 00:12:29.600
And then you can do everything to get behind helping that identity go in the way that it should go, disciple it forward, right?
00:12:29.759 --> 00:12:40.000
But it's not like discipleship for every human being in a formula that's for everyone, because then it misses that beautiful uniqueness of each of us.
00:12:40.720 --> 00:12:51.200
So, so let what's the difference of what Jesus made possible in our identity for us versus a strength finder?
00:12:51.360 --> 00:12:56.080
Everybody can like what's your unique gifts, like strengths, like pick some words.
00:12:56.240 --> 00:13:01.519
What's the difference that he has made possible uh for believers living into their identity?
00:13:01.600 --> 00:13:06.480
Because unbelievers have unique design and specific design by God.
00:13:06.799 --> 00:13:07.759
Yeah, absolutely.
00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:08.559
So it's funny.
00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:23.759
So, like a long time ago, when when uh the CIA was you know doing all my psychological testing, they said to me, they said, uh, you're you're uh a kind of a strange person because you hate conflict, but you gravitate towards it.
00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:27.519
So remember, my identity is untire of knots, militant peacemaker.
00:13:27.600 --> 00:13:28.799
I'm an untire of knots.
00:13:29.039 --> 00:13:36.639
So they're saying to me after all their testing, their profiling on me is you're a person who hates conflict, but you gravitate towards it.
00:13:36.960 --> 00:13:37.600
Why?
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:40.240
If you hate it, why do you gravitate towards it?
00:13:40.399 --> 00:13:47.039
The other weird thing about me is if, and I do hate conflict, but if I avoid conflict, I self-destruct.
00:13:48.559 --> 00:13:49.759
It's so fascinating.
00:13:49.919 --> 00:14:05.039
So even though I can take a Strength Finders or any of those tests, Enneagram, all of them, it tells me something about myself in a way, generally, but but what happens when the false identity takes the test?
00:14:05.919 --> 00:14:08.559
See, that's what happens, you get a skewed result.
00:14:08.960 --> 00:14:12.799
And we don't know because we don't know actually who the person is.
00:14:12.960 --> 00:14:14.399
It's like reading a resume.
00:14:14.480 --> 00:14:18.960
It's like, wow, everything in this resume is self-protection and self-promotion.
00:14:19.200 --> 00:14:28.720
Everything I do in a test is self-protection and self-promotion, and I don't even know it because I don't I can't tell it in myself because I just live in the lie all the time.
00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:39.279
So I can so the other day we were working with a bunch of youth, and um, one of the youth was absolutely unwilling to mix with the group.
00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:46.080
A new youth into the community wouldn't sit with the group, wouldn't communicate with the group.
00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:49.200
And we were gonna, we got to spend one week with this group.
00:14:49.360 --> 00:14:54.240
And so really, you know, like scary, like, wow, is this person okay?
00:14:54.480 --> 00:14:55.600
Young, young girl.
00:14:55.759 --> 00:14:59.279
And so when I went to talk to her, she was an expert in Myers Briggs.
00:14:59.519 --> 00:15:00.559
It was unbelievable.
00:15:00.639 --> 00:15:11.919
She and the Enneagram, she could tell me things about Myers-Briggs testing, and yet she herself was clearly wounded, deeply wounded.
00:15:12.080 --> 00:15:18.879
And so I would ask her, I was like, What is how does the my tell me about your Myers Briggs and why it's hard for you to be in a group?
00:15:19.039 --> 00:15:21.440
And she like, I don't know, I would, I don't want to talk about that.
00:15:21.840 --> 00:15:26.159
So, like, an expert in Myers-Briggs and all an Enneagram, what's your Enneagram number?
00:15:26.240 --> 00:15:30.799
But all those are, you know, those are telling you what whoever took that test.
00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:36.879
But I'm saying to you, the real you didn't take that test, the true you didn't take that test.
00:15:37.120 --> 00:15:42.000
So we spent three days with her walking her into her true identity.
00:15:42.320 --> 00:15:52.399
And then after three days, she would stand up in front of an entire group of people and and share and talk intimately about herself.
00:15:52.559 --> 00:15:57.039
The Myers-Briggs and them, they can't bring that kind of transformation.
00:15:57.200 --> 00:16:08.240
And even the the way that they're painting a profile of a person can be skewed because the person is taking the test within a lie.
00:16:09.120 --> 00:16:09.759
Yeah.
00:16:10.240 --> 00:16:10.799
Yep.
00:16:11.120 --> 00:16:28.240
And man, I just I just wrote down just as a good earthly father raises as the way they should go, knowing, seeing, and knowing the hearts and the unique attributes of my six sons, how much more does our own father want that for us?
00:16:28.399 --> 00:16:40.240
And the beauty of us having a heavenly father is we have him to speak and direct and give clarity that our friends who might not know him don't have and that that richness.
00:16:40.559 --> 00:16:45.679
So, part of this, I I want to honor your time because um, and I'm gonna take you up.
00:16:45.840 --> 00:16:49.360
I got it on the podcast that we're having, we're hanging out with you and Donna.
00:16:49.519 --> 00:16:50.720
So we're gonna road trip it.
00:16:50.799 --> 00:16:53.360
You tell me when, and Emily and I'll road trip it.
00:16:53.679 --> 00:16:59.919
But it it another aspect that's been really freeing, and I want to ask questions, y'all.
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:07.920
Jamie's stories, the CIA, they were frequent enough, not an anomaly of a lit hearing God once or twice.
00:17:08.000 --> 00:17:20.720
They were frequent enough that the CIA did did an evaluation, and that led to some other stories that um just paint it point to a powerful loving father.
00:17:20.880 --> 00:17:36.240
Uh, I love the one of the guy going, show me, the Jason Bourne friend of yours, and the, you know, who was like, Show me and this, and what that led to, and and your fears of seeing uh of going, God, I don't know.
00:17:36.799 --> 00:17:43.200
You know, I'm I'm questioning your protection of my kids in Iraq and then what he showed you.
00:17:43.359 --> 00:17:52.000
So tell us about the confession, repentance, transformational language, because this is language that's been really freeing for Emily and I.
00:17:52.400 --> 00:17:52.720
Yeah.
00:17:52.799 --> 00:17:53.039
Yeah.
00:17:53.119 --> 00:18:04.400
And I think, and this is what I love about the faith, you know, our faith, our our Christian faith is these beautiful sacraments that we've lost track of.
00:18:04.640 --> 00:18:07.519
And so to me, confession is a sacrament.
00:18:07.599 --> 00:18:12.720
It's something confession um is truth-telling, right?
00:18:12.880 --> 00:18:26.400
If we confess our sin, if we tell the truth about our separateness from God, that's what that when you say that verse, first John 1, like if if if we confess our sins, he's faithful unto us.
00:18:26.480 --> 00:18:38.799
When you tell the truth about your separateness from God, what a powerful, that's a powerful statement then, if we confess our sins, which to me was always say you're sorry about your sin, which is meaningless.
00:18:39.119 --> 00:18:44.880
And there's nowhere in Scripture where God is demanding an apology from people.
00:18:45.200 --> 00:18:49.440
Jesus never walks around going, I need you to say you're sorry for doing that.
00:18:49.680 --> 00:18:55.519
This is all us because saying you're sorry is an easy way not to deal with anything.
00:18:55.759 --> 00:18:58.720
Um, and so, but confession is deep.
00:18:59.039 --> 00:19:13.599
So my son um is a special agent in the FBI, and so when he's working a case and he brings a person in and he says to him, I need you to write your confession, and they write down I'm sorry on a piece of paper, nothing is resolved.
00:19:13.839 --> 00:19:15.759
He's not a confession, isn't an apology.
00:19:15.920 --> 00:19:18.079
A confession is I need you to tell the truth.
00:19:18.240 --> 00:19:19.119
Just tell the truth.
00:19:19.279 --> 00:19:24.480
So I a confession can be positive or negative, it's just I'm a US citizen, confession.
00:19:24.799 --> 00:19:27.519
Um, I struggle with fear, confession.
00:19:27.680 --> 00:19:29.200
Like it's just truth telling.
00:19:29.359 --> 00:19:33.119
And so truth telling is the only thing that sets people free.
00:19:33.359 --> 00:19:40.559
Jesus said knowing and experiencing the truth, knowing and experiencing the truth sets people free.
00:19:40.720 --> 00:19:46.960
And so the beginning of everything you're doing, especially in relation to God, is to tell the truth.
00:19:47.200 --> 00:19:49.119
God, I don't believe you're here.
00:19:49.359 --> 00:19:51.519
What a beautiful statement.
00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:56.400
I, God, I'm afraid that you don't love me as much as you love other people.
00:19:56.640 --> 00:20:02.160
Man, when you start by that, it's like the Holy Spirit moves like the wind in a room.
00:20:02.240 --> 00:20:07.759
This is my favorite thing to do with people who don't know Christ, is to walk them into confession.
00:20:08.000 --> 00:20:18.319
Is before anything else, just to get them to understand how to truth tell, just it's like you open the window and like and the wind and the spirit just moves into the room.
00:20:18.559 --> 00:20:25.039
Because truth telling leads to repentance, which is mind, mind and life change.
00:20:25.200 --> 00:20:28.160
If you're not going to tell the truth, nothing's gonna change.
00:20:28.319 --> 00:20:32.000
And Christians are famous at not telling the truth.
00:20:32.160 --> 00:20:37.200
It's not that we're liars necessarily, it's we actually don't know what the truth is.
00:20:38.079 --> 00:20:44.000
We don't really know what we actually believe deep down in our heart because we're so used to just saying stuff.
00:20:44.160 --> 00:20:54.880
Like just, you know, you know, be anxious for nothing, but everything by prayer and supplication, let's you're like we know how to say all that stuff, but we ain't we're not gonna go anywhere where our lives are in danger, right?
00:20:55.119 --> 00:20:59.279
Like, because it's not down here, it's not part of our confessional life.
00:20:59.519 --> 00:21:03.920
And then in in truth telling leads to mind change and form change.
00:21:04.079 --> 00:21:06.799
It doesn't guarantee it, but it opens the way for it.
00:21:07.039 --> 00:21:16.240
Truth tell leads to mind change and form change, which then mind that which then leads to transformation, which is actually changing the form of things.
00:21:16.480 --> 00:21:25.039
Um, and so the form of my life, the actions in my life aren't going to change unless my mind and thinking is transformed.
00:21:25.200 --> 00:21:26.960
Romans chap Romans 12.
00:21:27.599 --> 00:21:30.720
Submit yourselves to God, holy and living sacrifice.
00:21:30.960 --> 00:21:32.720
This is confession to me.
00:21:32.960 --> 00:21:38.880
And stop conforming to the patterns of the world, but be being transformed by the renewing of your mind.
00:21:39.119 --> 00:21:45.200
Then you will know the way in which to go, the perfect way in which to form yourself or your life patterns.
00:21:45.359 --> 00:21:51.279
And so it's true, to a mind change, form change, and humans crave this process.
00:21:51.519 --> 00:21:58.160
All Muslims, Hindus, atheists, young, old crave the freedom of confession.
00:21:58.319 --> 00:21:59.599
And because they want to know.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:00.640
Different way.
00:22:00.720 --> 00:22:02.640
They just don't know a different way.
00:22:02.799 --> 00:22:12.559
So when I when I was teaching at this medical faculty university, um it was a regional medical, so it was different universities all together.
00:22:12.720 --> 00:22:17.920
And I had been working with the dean of the university for a couple of years on identity.
00:22:18.799 --> 00:22:24.400
And so he wanted to bring us in because he said doctors have a high suicide rate.
00:22:24.559 --> 00:22:29.359
And as faculty, doctors, they're they don't know how to help students.
00:22:29.599 --> 00:22:35.519
And I said, Well, it's because the doctors are getting their identity from being a doctor, and that's not an identity and all that.
00:22:35.680 --> 00:22:42.559
And so he he he called together this conference and he stood up at the beginning and he said, I'm gonna start this conference with a confession.
00:22:42.799 --> 00:22:44.799
I've never seen a leader do this before.
00:22:44.880 --> 00:22:46.079
It was so great.
00:22:46.319 --> 00:22:53.519
And he said, I confess that the that the um that the medical system in the United States is broken.
00:22:53.599 --> 00:22:56.079
The healthcare, the whole healthcare system is broken.
00:22:56.319 --> 00:22:57.440
I confess that.
00:22:57.599 --> 00:23:09.039
And he said, and I confess that what we're doing at this university is putting students into hundreds of thousands of dollars to in debt and putting them in a system that we already know is broken.
00:23:09.279 --> 00:23:10.960
That's what how he started it.
00:23:11.200 --> 00:23:13.359
And I said, it was so moving.
00:23:13.440 --> 00:23:14.880
And the room was silent.
00:23:15.039 --> 00:23:21.680
All the doctors in the room, and I and so when I had a chance to talk, I asked, I said, I want to know, is what he said true?
00:23:22.079 --> 00:23:23.279
Is what he said true?
00:23:23.359 --> 00:23:24.720
Is is is he right?
00:23:25.039 --> 00:23:28.160
And all the doctors agreed he was in fact correct.
00:23:28.960 --> 00:23:32.880
And then I and so now we have a chance to change the way we think.
00:23:33.039 --> 00:23:34.640
We have a chance to repent.
00:23:34.799 --> 00:23:38.640
And so I asked them, can the system be changed?
00:23:39.200 --> 00:23:40.640
And they all said no.
00:23:41.839 --> 00:23:42.799
They all said no.
00:23:42.960 --> 00:23:44.160
And I said, why not?
00:23:44.400 --> 00:23:45.839
Because it's too big.
00:23:46.160 --> 00:23:49.440
Because if we try and change it, we're gonna lose our jobs.
00:23:49.680 --> 00:23:50.160
Boom.
00:23:50.400 --> 00:23:51.279
There it was.
00:23:51.519 --> 00:23:52.480
There it is.
00:23:52.799 --> 00:23:55.759
Because if we try and change it, we'll lose our funding.
00:23:55.920 --> 00:23:57.759
There's where the enemy has them.
00:23:57.920 --> 00:24:00.880
There's the fear, there's the false identity.
00:24:01.039 --> 00:24:09.039
And the false identity is this I don't believe that I'm worth protecting if we go to transform a system.
00:24:09.839 --> 00:24:16.720
That I'm just gonna get run over by the system, it's gonna put me into unemployment, and no one's gonna benefit anything from this.
00:24:16.799 --> 00:24:22.319
So let's just let it go and try and make as much money off this corrupt system as we can.
00:24:22.559 --> 00:24:24.799
Christians and non-Christians alike.
00:24:25.039 --> 00:24:28.319
We call it, we call it being a chaplain for the empire.
00:24:28.559 --> 00:24:30.319
You're just a chaplain for the empire.
00:24:30.400 --> 00:24:32.240
You're not bringing transformation.
00:24:33.920 --> 00:24:40.240
So confession of truth-telling leads to repentance, which we turn to truth.
00:24:40.319 --> 00:24:41.920
And that's for unbelievers or believers.
00:24:42.000 --> 00:24:49.920
But the difference with believers is that when we confess truth tell to God, we have access to hear from him for that he gives us truth in turn.
00:24:50.079 --> 00:24:53.839
That changes our mind, our behaviors follow, that is transformation.
00:24:54.319 --> 00:24:59.680
Now, confession for medical professionals, they still that opens the door.
00:24:59.839 --> 00:25:21.839
But so I I I've processed the confession, repentance, transformation, but you're uh that's a cool connection that transfer that uh confession repentance is the opens up and is connected to fear, which is that the path for us to identify our fears, which are connected to our lies?
00:25:22.160 --> 00:25:22.960
Absolutely.
00:25:23.200 --> 00:25:27.920
When you when you're in confession, what you're gonna ultimately get to is your view of God.
00:25:28.240 --> 00:25:30.799
That's where you're going, if you'll tell the truth.
00:25:30.960 --> 00:25:32.559
And that's what God wants.
00:25:32.799 --> 00:25:38.640
He He wants you to He wants to show you that you have a wrong view of Him.
00:25:39.119 --> 00:25:44.640
And your view of Him is that He's either unable or unwilling to help.
00:25:45.279 --> 00:25:53.759
And so that means, and the way we know that that's what a person believes is because then all of the weight of everything is now on you.
00:25:54.559 --> 00:25:54.960
Right?
00:25:55.119 --> 00:25:56.799
Who's gonna make me a good parent?
00:25:56.960 --> 00:25:58.480
Who's gonna make me a good parent?
00:25:58.720 --> 00:26:00.559
I am like it's on me.
00:26:00.640 --> 00:26:02.240
Who's gonna make me a good husband?
00:26:02.400 --> 00:26:07.519
I don't, I can read a thousand books, but ultimately I've got to just turn myself into this thing.
00:26:07.759 --> 00:26:11.200
And deep down I know it's not, I can't do it.
00:26:11.440 --> 00:26:14.720
But but then my question is where is God in this?
00:26:15.119 --> 00:26:18.640
In what way is God involved in you being?
00:26:18.799 --> 00:26:21.599
And see, good husbands, not an identity.
00:26:22.319 --> 00:26:24.160
That's not what God didn't say.
00:26:24.319 --> 00:26:27.839
I want you to go into the world and be the best husbands you can be.
00:26:28.079 --> 00:26:32.079
We did that, we create all this stuff, it just added burden.
00:26:32.319 --> 00:26:38.880
The true you you take when we work with couples, we it's we don't put them together and work with them.
00:26:38.960 --> 00:26:43.759
It's like two wounded people banging into each other's woundedness is never gonna resolve anything.
00:26:44.079 --> 00:26:46.880
But two healed people can resolve anything.
00:26:47.359 --> 00:26:54.160
So we we actually meet with them separately and just talk about their own woundedness.
00:26:54.640 --> 00:26:58.319
Like, why does this freak you out so much?
00:26:58.480 --> 00:26:59.119
What why?
00:26:59.279 --> 00:27:02.799
And what it always comes down to in the individual is fear.
00:27:03.039 --> 00:27:03.759
They're afraid.
00:27:03.839 --> 00:27:03.920
Yeah.
00:27:04.079 --> 00:27:06.400
What are you afraid of that I'm a failure?
00:27:06.960 --> 00:27:09.519
What are you afraid of that I'm a terrible husband?
00:27:09.680 --> 00:27:10.559
What are you afraid of?
00:27:10.720 --> 00:27:18.640
I'm afraid, and it's just this fear, and they're self-protecting and self-promoting to try and compensate for the fear.
00:27:18.799 --> 00:27:22.000
And a lot of that is by blaming other people.
00:27:22.480 --> 00:27:22.799
Right?
00:27:22.880 --> 00:27:24.000
It's other people's fault.
00:27:24.160 --> 00:27:26.000
It's not my fault, it's other people's fault.
00:27:26.160 --> 00:27:32.720
And so, but what they're most afraid of is somehow that God is not with them.
00:27:32.960 --> 00:27:34.240
He's not with them.
00:27:34.480 --> 00:27:50.400
And that's where the Lord, it's interesting when you're reading through the scriptures and and people are the the the you know, the eight or nine, what is it, seven or eight times God personally challenges an individual like Gideon or and and Moses, they give the same kinds of objections.
00:27:50.559 --> 00:27:55.519
I'm not capable, I can't, it's all about their perception of their own identity.
00:27:55.680 --> 00:27:57.440
It's like I can't do it, I'm slow.
00:27:57.599 --> 00:27:58.799
They're I am statements.
00:27:58.960 --> 00:27:59.920
That's what we make people say.
00:28:00.079 --> 00:28:02.160
Wait, make an I am statement about that.
00:28:02.480 --> 00:28:03.599
I am a failure.
00:28:03.759 --> 00:28:04.960
That's what you're saying.
00:28:05.119 --> 00:28:07.279
It's not like I feel like a failure.
00:28:07.519 --> 00:28:08.720
It's I am.
00:28:08.880 --> 00:28:16.480
And God, when you make I am statements with God, He wants you to tell the truth about He didn't make a failure.
00:28:16.640 --> 00:28:17.680
That isn't what He right.
00:28:18.000 --> 00:28:29.119
And so when they're saying that, they're admitting their fear of who they are, but then ultimately God's answer to him always is like, not like I'll make you a powerful speaker.
00:28:29.279 --> 00:28:30.319
He doesn't say that to him.
00:28:30.480 --> 00:28:31.519
I'll make you wealthy.
00:28:31.680 --> 00:28:33.839
He says to him, I will be with you.
00:28:34.319 --> 00:28:35.519
I will be with you.
00:28:35.759 --> 00:28:38.720
I feel like that's not good enough of an answer for people.
00:28:39.039 --> 00:28:41.839
Like deep down to them, it's like that's not good enough.
00:28:42.000 --> 00:28:42.960
I'm with you.
00:28:43.119 --> 00:28:44.480
Like I need income.
00:28:44.640 --> 00:28:52.000
I need like that's but the best answer he could ever say to us is, look, I am he he says, Am I not the one sending you?
00:28:52.240 --> 00:28:53.440
Like, do you don't get that?
00:28:53.599 --> 00:28:56.000
Do you think you're doing this by yourself?
00:28:56.400 --> 00:28:58.880
Because you talk like you're doing by yourself.
00:28:59.039 --> 00:29:02.000
And when you're doing it by yourself, you got to self-protect and self-prote.
00:29:03.599 --> 00:29:06.400
So I've been feeling that weight the past few days.
00:29:06.559 --> 00:29:08.000
It's just back from vacation.
00:29:08.160 --> 00:29:09.440
The waves have been hitting.
00:29:09.519 --> 00:29:12.880
I've been cracky at home, you know, not as present.
00:29:13.039 --> 00:29:15.119
I've been more about me protection.
00:29:15.519 --> 00:29:21.039
Uh Monday, yeah, Emily had a hard day on Monday as well with eight little kids back from vacation.
00:29:21.279 --> 00:29:28.000
And she was talking about her day, and I one-upped her, which was like such a jerk, idiot move of self-protection, exactly what you're talking about.
00:29:28.160 --> 00:29:41.200
But the the the processing, like I had the statements I've been feeling are like I am disappointing, dropping the ball, like all these things and the busyness, the chaos, I'm uh the the I am statements.
00:29:41.519 --> 00:29:54.160
So in in your own process of this formation, uh, that this formation journey for you, um, what's your encouragement to me as I continue to mature into these truths?
00:29:54.240 --> 00:29:58.799
Because I'm assuming you still have bad days and carry weight.
00:29:59.039 --> 00:30:08.720
And especially in seasons like this for you, is it how is it different now for you from when you were 40 and in that pattern?
00:30:09.279 --> 00:30:09.759
Yeah.
00:30:09.920 --> 00:30:14.480
Um, yeah, it's it's so much, it's like I go back to my wrestling coach.
00:30:14.720 --> 00:30:19.680
This is like every day, every day we practice, every day we practice like that.
00:30:19.839 --> 00:30:25.599
And and what happens is the day you stop practicing, the enemy is right there.
00:30:25.759 --> 00:30:30.480
The enemy is the enemy will outlast your zeal every time.
00:30:30.720 --> 00:30:36.240
He doesn't care about enthusiasm, he doesn't care about up days, he'll outlast your zeal.
00:30:36.400 --> 00:30:41.200
But what he what he can't outlast is your discipline, your discipleship, right?
00:30:41.519 --> 00:30:44.079
And this is what this is what real discipleship is.
00:30:44.160 --> 00:30:45.119
It's disciplining.
00:30:45.200 --> 00:30:50.880
It's like, it's like, so every here, here's my practice every morning, back to being in wrestling practice.
00:30:51.119 --> 00:30:59.359
Is every morning I wake up and the number one thing I do is tell the truth about my fear every single morning.
00:30:59.519 --> 00:31:04.400
And I do it, I do it like I usually don't even have to do this because I already know what my fear is.
00:31:04.480 --> 00:31:05.279
I'm a disappointment.
00:31:05.440 --> 00:31:06.160
I already know it.
00:31:06.319 --> 00:31:11.839
The enemy's not creative, the enemy knows our weak place and just hammers at you, right?
00:31:12.000 --> 00:31:15.200
He knows he was there when I learned that I was a disappointment.
00:31:15.359 --> 00:31:19.279
He he knew when I believed that lie about myself, and that lie is deep.
00:31:19.440 --> 00:31:22.400
It's deep because it's a set it's attached to religion.
00:31:22.640 --> 00:31:25.119
It's a very deep that God is disappointed in you.
00:31:25.200 --> 00:31:27.359
Do you know how many times I heard that growing up?
00:31:27.599 --> 00:31:33.759
And so to believe God's never disappointed into me is very difficult to receive from God.
00:31:34.480 --> 00:31:41.200
Remember, your measure of maturity in Christ is not what you can do for God, it's how much you can receive from God.
00:31:41.359 --> 00:31:42.960
That's the key, right?
00:31:43.119 --> 00:31:44.400
Is receiving from Him.
00:31:44.559 --> 00:31:58.319
And so my discipline is I get up in the morning and I come into this particular room and I kneel down on the floor, put my head on the ground on the floor.
00:31:58.480 --> 00:32:02.400
And the only reason I do that, I don't think that's any more special way to pray.
00:32:02.559 --> 00:32:08.799
But when I do that, the Lord just should give me this picture of all the weight that I'm carrying rolls off me.
00:32:09.039 --> 00:32:13.039
In that position, I can't hold the burden on my shoulders.
00:32:13.119 --> 00:32:16.640
It rolls off of me and it rolls right to his feet.
00:32:17.680 --> 00:32:21.200
And and so, and then I let it roll off and I say what it is.
00:32:21.440 --> 00:32:27.359
God, in this day, in this one day, these are the things that you've invited me into.
00:32:27.680 --> 00:32:31.920
You've invited me into, and I am unable to do them.
00:32:32.720 --> 00:32:34.079
Like, I cannot do them.
00:32:34.240 --> 00:32:37.279
They're greater than me, they're more than my capacity.
00:32:37.440 --> 00:32:38.960
This is what I believe.
00:32:39.119 --> 00:32:43.920
And I'm giving these burdens and these lies to you that I'm a disappointment.
00:32:44.079 --> 00:32:47.519
And I visualize them rolling off my shoulder.
00:32:47.680 --> 00:32:52.160
He is kept in perfect peace, whose mind and imagination is fixed on thee because he trusts in thee.
00:32:52.319 --> 00:32:55.359
I visualize them rolling off my shoulders to his feet.
00:32:55.599 --> 00:32:58.319
Cast all your cares on me because he cares for you.
00:32:58.480 --> 00:33:01.200
Uh come unto me, all you are heavy burden.
00:33:01.440 --> 00:33:04.079
And I I do what God invited me to do.
00:33:04.480 --> 00:33:05.599
Let him have it.
00:33:05.839 --> 00:33:06.799
Every day.
00:33:07.039 --> 00:33:07.599
Every day.
00:33:07.759 --> 00:33:10.880
And I roll off, and then always, that's my confession.
00:33:11.119 --> 00:33:14.240
God, you know, I've got to write so many chapters today.
00:33:14.400 --> 00:33:18.559
I feel like my my creativity well is not deep enough.
00:33:18.799 --> 00:33:20.640
I believe I'm a disappointment in this.
00:33:20.799 --> 00:33:23.200
I believe I'm an empty all of that.
00:33:23.359 --> 00:33:24.640
Say them, say them out loud.
00:33:24.720 --> 00:33:29.359
Let him search me and know me, reveal to me any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way, all of that.
00:33:29.519 --> 00:33:30.799
And it doesn't take long.
00:33:30.960 --> 00:33:34.000
And then once it's off, take my yoke upon you.
00:33:34.240 --> 00:33:36.480
Okay, God, what do you have for me today?
00:33:36.640 --> 00:33:39.279
I want to receive all that you have for me today.
00:33:39.440 --> 00:33:44.160
I'm giving you the lies, but I'm not leaving the house.
00:33:44.400 --> 00:33:49.200
It's swept clean, but I but it has to be filled with truth, or I'll pick the lie right back up.
00:33:49.359 --> 00:33:49.680
Right?
00:33:49.759 --> 00:33:51.519
So rolls off, Jesus.
00:33:51.680 --> 00:33:53.119
What do you want to give to me today?
00:33:53.279 --> 00:33:55.519
I want to receive all that you have for me in this day.
00:33:55.680 --> 00:33:56.640
Fill me up.
00:33:56.880 --> 00:33:57.279
Right?
00:33:57.440 --> 00:34:00.640
And then I write down what he gives me.
00:34:00.799 --> 00:34:03.839
I make sure I, okay, this is what he says to me.
00:34:04.000 --> 00:34:09.199
And most of the time, what he says to me is, I am with you all day long.
00:34:09.760 --> 00:34:10.719
I am with you.
00:34:10.880 --> 00:34:12.639
Don't forget that I am with you.
00:34:12.800 --> 00:34:14.800
So stay with me, abide with me.
00:34:15.039 --> 00:34:19.039
So during the day, I'll have a question, and I'm right here.
00:34:19.199 --> 00:34:20.079
Ask me the question.
00:34:20.239 --> 00:34:20.639
I'm right.
00:34:20.880 --> 00:34:24.400
I feel like I feel frustration right now towards this.
00:34:24.480 --> 00:34:26.159
Ask me a question about the frustration.
00:34:26.320 --> 00:34:26.960
Ask me a question.
00:34:27.280 --> 00:34:28.079
What are you afraid of?
00:34:28.159 --> 00:34:29.440
What are you afraid of right now?
00:34:29.599 --> 00:34:30.000
Like that.
00:34:30.079 --> 00:34:31.119
I'm with you all day long.
00:34:31.280 --> 00:34:31.840
Stay with me.
00:34:32.000 --> 00:34:33.599
Pay attention to what I'm saying.
00:34:33.679 --> 00:34:34.159
Like that.
00:34:34.559 --> 00:34:36.480
Every day that's my practice.
00:34:36.719 --> 00:34:43.119
And and it it gets me through one day, which is all God cares about.
00:34:44.079 --> 00:34:44.480
Right?
00:34:44.639 --> 00:34:46.079
Is the one day.
00:34:47.840 --> 00:34:49.119
And so that's my practice.
00:34:49.199 --> 00:35:00.800
And I'm telling you, it's once you learn that discipline and you practice that discipline, you realize that in today, this is why I'm writing the book enough.
00:35:00.960 --> 00:35:02.159
Today is enough.
00:35:02.400 --> 00:35:03.519
Today is enough.
00:35:03.760 --> 00:35:11.039
And what you are able to walk through and accomplish with Christ in one day is enough.
00:35:11.360 --> 00:35:15.599
And and if someone tells you it's not enough, you're listening to the liar.
00:35:17.440 --> 00:35:20.400
That's the the enough is God's word.
00:35:21.679 --> 00:35:24.000
I I've spent a lot of my life.
00:35:24.320 --> 00:35:27.360
I'm a futurist, visionary, strategic guy.
00:35:27.440 --> 00:35:45.519
I've spent a lot of my life in the potential of tomorrow, um, and struggled with contentment and present and and anxiety and fear comes with thinking of tomorrow and you know what that is, which is fear associated with disappointing, not enough, those lies in the future.
00:35:45.760 --> 00:35:55.119
And that, yeah, the the practice of enough and today, unpack for me what that does to fear.
00:35:55.920 --> 00:36:01.280
Yeah, so fear, so all fear is is a directional signal.
00:36:01.440 --> 00:36:02.400
That's all it is.
00:36:02.639 --> 00:36:05.119
So nobody can make you afraid.
00:36:05.360 --> 00:36:09.280
No one has the power, nothing has the power to make you afraid.
00:36:09.440 --> 00:36:11.920
We make our we make ourselves afraid.
00:36:12.079 --> 00:36:14.320
But the fear is not bad, the fear is good.
00:36:14.480 --> 00:36:24.000
What the fear is doing is telling you that something you do or believe or are thinking about doing is going to hurt you.
00:36:24.239 --> 00:36:26.320
And that's the value of the fear.
00:36:26.480 --> 00:36:31.920
But it's not a decision maker, it's just an indicator, it's a warning light, right?
00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:37.199
So, like, and as soon as you address what the fear is pointing to, the fear is done and it goes away.
00:36:37.440 --> 00:36:44.719
You don't have to try and put the fear down, just use it for what God gave us the ability to fear for, and it goes away.
00:36:44.800 --> 00:36:51.599
So if I'm walking towards a cliff, the closer I get, the more this feeling inside of me stirs up like we're aiming for disaster.
00:36:51.840 --> 00:36:58.719
And if you get really close and look over the edge, unless you're a daredevil person, like you're it's the fear's blinding.
00:36:58.800 --> 00:37:03.519
But all you have to do is turn around and look the other way and take one step and the fear is gone.
00:37:03.679 --> 00:37:05.679
You don't have to run from the cliff.
00:37:05.920 --> 00:37:09.840
You just have to turn in a direction where the cliff isn't your future.
00:37:10.079 --> 00:37:11.280
And the fear's done.
00:37:11.440 --> 00:37:12.800
It's gone like that.
00:37:13.039 --> 00:37:18.800
So when I have a fear, when fear pops up, the question immediately is, God, what am I afraid of?
00:37:18.960 --> 00:37:19.440
What is it?
00:37:19.519 --> 00:37:20.559
What am I afraid of here?
00:37:20.719 --> 00:37:29.519
The fear is telling me that something I believe about myself, God, or others is going the what I believe about them is gonna hurt me.
00:37:29.760 --> 00:37:33.360
And so typically the fear is God's not gonna be there for this.
00:37:33.599 --> 00:37:37.199
As soon as I start to believe that, my fear kicks in and goes, Hey, do you know what you're thinking right now?
00:37:37.280 --> 00:37:39.119
Hey, do you know what you're thinking right now?
00:37:39.280 --> 00:37:41.440
You're thinking that God doesn't care about you.
00:37:41.760 --> 00:37:45.679
Flash, flash, like that's and we and we're like, God, take away this fear.
00:37:46.000 --> 00:37:47.920
Don't no, don't take it away.
00:37:48.159 --> 00:37:49.920
Use it and let it go.
00:37:50.480 --> 00:37:51.119
Right?
00:37:51.840 --> 00:37:54.719
So my son, my oldest son was in in Afghanistan.
00:37:54.880 --> 00:37:57.199
He's been in all crazy places.
00:37:57.440 --> 00:38:00.480
And he, you know, he got sent to Afghanistan for a year.
00:38:00.559 --> 00:38:04.000
And for some reason, Afghanistan really it bothered me.
00:38:04.239 --> 00:38:09.920
And after my own life, and I would I would be talking to him, you know, the times I occasionally got to talk to him from Afghanistan.
00:38:10.000 --> 00:38:12.480
I would say, hey, I'm just wanting, you know, I'm praying for you, I'm nervous for you.
00:38:12.559 --> 00:38:14.079
And he goes, Dad, why do you nervous?
00:38:14.320 --> 00:38:16.960
You raised us this like you raised us this way.
00:38:17.440 --> 00:38:19.679
Um, but what was I afraid of?
00:38:19.840 --> 00:38:23.920
So I was afraid he might get killed because he was in crazy situations.
00:38:24.400 --> 00:38:28.559
Um, yeah, but I know what happens if a person dies, they go to heaven.
00:38:28.639 --> 00:38:29.599
Like, what am I afraid of?
00:38:29.760 --> 00:38:30.480
What am I afraid of?
00:38:30.559 --> 00:38:31.760
That's what the Lord kept asking me.
00:38:31.840 --> 00:38:35.599
What are you really afraid of if if if he dies?
00:38:36.239 --> 00:38:38.639
It means that God failed.
00:38:38.960 --> 00:38:39.920
That's what it means.
00:38:40.079 --> 00:38:44.719
It means that God didn't care enough about me to protect my kid.
00:38:44.880 --> 00:38:45.920
That's what it means.
00:38:46.079 --> 00:38:48.000
And that's what offends God.
00:38:48.320 --> 00:38:49.599
That thought.
00:38:50.480 --> 00:38:54.239
That separ that thought separates me from God.
00:38:55.199 --> 00:38:55.840
Yeah.
00:38:56.239 --> 00:38:58.880
Because he because it's not true.
00:39:01.119 --> 00:39:08.400
I I have a uh current processing, and I'm assuming you've got that this way more.
00:39:08.639 --> 00:39:17.280
Emily and I both practically uh in and going to God and trying to process our fears and then saying, what do you uh want me to know?
00:39:17.440 --> 00:39:18.880
What do you want me to do?
00:39:19.119 --> 00:39:21.840
Um we're struggling to discern.
00:39:22.079 --> 00:39:23.519
It's like, man, I gotta go.
00:39:23.599 --> 00:39:29.039
I I'll hear the whisper to like go do ministry to the local jail inmates.
00:39:29.280 --> 00:39:32.880
And we have eight kids and leading true face.
00:39:33.199 --> 00:39:40.159
And it so it's a the passions in this season are hard to discern what it is.
00:39:40.320 --> 00:39:53.039
And I'm I'm I think what you're sharing about the present enough is a missing component for us in that weight of trying the the the weight of processing and hearing from God.
00:39:53.440 --> 00:39:56.239
I don't know if we've added that today.
00:39:56.880 --> 00:39:57.360
Right.
00:39:57.599 --> 00:39:58.559
Yeah, right.
00:39:58.800 --> 00:40:07.920
And and this is, you know, again, this is the value of community because when when you're in community, because I get I you know we get to do this with our folks every day.
00:40:08.079 --> 00:40:10.079
I did it yesterday with a bunch of 20-year-olds.
00:40:10.239 --> 00:40:11.599
It was so interesting.
00:40:11.840 --> 00:40:25.360
And um, and just and just saying, okay, when because I can I because I'm not them and I'm not in their fear, I can then I like it's like I can you know hold their hand and walk with them because their fear doesn't affect me.
00:40:25.519 --> 00:40:27.920
And so I can keep asking questions.
00:40:28.239 --> 00:40:35.920
And um, so like I know that with you, I mean I it's like I've done this so much over the years, I'm just never even questioning it anymore.
00:40:36.000 --> 00:40:40.880
It's like I God is clear, he's clear in what he what what he's inviting us into.
00:40:40.960 --> 00:40:41.440
He's clear.
00:40:41.599 --> 00:40:43.360
If he's not clear, we're in big trouble.
00:40:43.519 --> 00:40:44.320
We're in big trouble.
00:40:44.400 --> 00:40:55.679
Yeah, and he's clear, and so if we're muddled and confused and and anxious, it's because it's because of something that we believe that's not true.
00:40:55.840 --> 00:40:57.280
That's what's doing it.
00:40:57.440 --> 00:41:03.199
It's not God, it's not you, it's what you believe that's can bringing the confusion.
00:41:03.440 --> 00:41:07.119
And so that's so all I do with people is ask them questions.
00:41:07.280 --> 00:41:12.800
Um, like they'll like one of these guys was talking to me about like, should I go to this university or this university?
00:41:12.880 --> 00:41:14.960
And he's super stressed out about it.
00:41:15.199 --> 00:41:17.679
And I said, Well, what's what's the benefit of the university?
00:41:17.760 --> 00:41:18.480
He already done all that.
00:41:18.559 --> 00:41:20.320
They're you know, this one's good for this, and this one's good.
00:41:20.639 --> 00:41:22.000
So like they're basically equal, right?
00:41:22.079 --> 00:41:27.519
And he's like, Yeah, and I said, So what do you believe about God that makes you so anxious about this?
00:41:28.320 --> 00:41:31.280
Like if they're both the same, pick one and go to it.
00:41:31.440 --> 00:41:32.559
Who cares?
00:41:32.880 --> 00:41:37.760
And he's and his belief is that I could go to the wrong one, right?
00:41:38.000 --> 00:41:42.239
And there's nothing God can do if I go to the wrong one.
00:41:42.400 --> 00:41:44.400
Like, where did you get that view of God?
00:41:44.559 --> 00:41:45.440
Like, where is that?
00:41:45.760 --> 00:41:47.119
But I know where they get it.
00:41:47.360 --> 00:41:49.920
Oh, I know where they get it, right?
00:41:50.320 --> 00:41:58.639
So, how do you So in your season right now with ass podcast speaking, do this, like how do you discern as those come in?
00:41:58.719 --> 00:42:00.719
Like, what is your process for that?
00:42:01.360 --> 00:42:06.079
I know because I I can I can tell you exactly what God's invited me into this year.
00:42:06.239 --> 00:42:08.159
I know what he has, I'm very clear.
00:42:08.480 --> 00:42:09.840
And it's only two things.
00:42:10.000 --> 00:42:15.199
And although I get all kinds of opportunity, if it's not one of those two, I just say no.
00:42:16.079 --> 00:42:18.079
Like, keep it just keep it as simple.
00:42:18.159 --> 00:42:23.679
It's like God's like, I'm gonna throw 5,000 opportunities at you this year, and you have to decide which one's my will.
00:42:23.840 --> 00:42:25.360
It's like he wouldn't do that.
00:42:25.519 --> 00:42:28.639
Like it's uh will there be 5,000 opportunities?
00:42:28.800 --> 00:42:34.159
Listen, for a person walking in their true identity, there's a million opportunities all the time.
00:42:34.239 --> 00:42:35.519
That's the beauty of life.
00:42:35.679 --> 00:42:36.639
It's so beautiful.
00:42:36.800 --> 00:42:39.119
My wife calls the kingdom Costco.
00:42:39.280 --> 00:42:45.440
She said it's like you get a Costco card, that's and you and you walk in the door and you're in Costco.
00:42:45.519 --> 00:42:50.719
That you know, you walk into the kingdom of God and you go into Costume and you go, oh no, which mayonnaise should I buy?
00:42:50.800 --> 00:42:52.960
Which it's like they've already been curated.
00:42:53.039 --> 00:42:54.719
There's three good ones.
00:42:55.039 --> 00:42:55.760
There they are.
00:42:55.840 --> 00:42:56.559
There's three of them.
00:42:56.719 --> 00:42:57.199
Pick one.
00:42:57.280 --> 00:42:58.000
They're all great.
00:42:58.159 --> 00:42:59.519
It's like that's the kingdom.
00:42:59.679 --> 00:43:09.599
When you step into that kingdom with that relationship with the Lord, it's like going to Disney World and standing in the middle of Disney World crying because you don't know which ride God wants you to get on.
00:43:10.400 --> 00:43:13.519
It's like get on the one you like the most.
00:43:14.800 --> 00:43:17.840
Where does your what ride makes your heart come alive?
00:43:17.920 --> 00:43:19.599
And trust me, we're all different.
00:43:19.840 --> 00:43:31.599
And and what's wild is because of identity, we've done this in in a room, like we'll have 50 people in a room, we'll walk them through true identity, and then we'll say, okay, in our city, we have seven opportunities.
00:43:31.760 --> 00:43:33.440
In our city, seven opportunities.
00:43:33.760 --> 00:43:34.800
Fill out a card.
00:43:35.039 --> 00:43:39.440
Every time the identity spread evenly across the opportunities.
00:43:40.159 --> 00:43:40.639
You know why?
00:43:41.199 --> 00:43:42.480
That's how God made us.
00:43:42.719 --> 00:43:47.039
And if we would just relax and say, tell me which one of these makes your heart go jump.
00:43:47.280 --> 00:43:50.800
And here's another one more prayer, important prayer.
00:43:50.960 --> 00:43:51.920
I pray with people.
00:43:52.079 --> 00:43:58.000
Let's spend some time asking God all the things we're doing for God that He never invited us into.
00:43:58.800 --> 00:43:59.760
That's a big prayer.
00:44:01.280 --> 00:44:04.320
Because the enemy's really smart about this stuff.
00:44:04.639 --> 00:44:15.119
And and when people I mean, I had one of our folks yesterday sit tell me that she's lost her joy in what she's doing, and I said, move then, move, move, move, get out of it, get out of it.
00:44:16.400 --> 00:44:22.719
Because God has seasons and he invites us things into seasons, and somehow we get in our mind that we're in this forever.
00:44:23.039 --> 00:44:26.639
Like He's the God that loves seasons.
00:44:27.039 --> 00:44:30.000
He loves, loves, loves seasons.
00:44:30.239 --> 00:44:32.239
Can't you tell by looking around?
00:44:32.400 --> 00:44:35.840
It's very unusual for God to make one thing stay that way forever.
00:44:36.079 --> 00:44:37.280
Very unusual.
00:44:37.599 --> 00:44:40.559
He loves change and development and movement.
00:44:40.880 --> 00:44:46.159
And so when you lose your joy, move, seasons over.
00:44:46.239 --> 00:44:46.639
Well done.
00:44:46.800 --> 00:44:47.440
Beautiful job.
00:44:47.599 --> 00:44:48.000
Great job.
00:44:48.159 --> 00:44:48.719
God bless you.
00:44:48.800 --> 00:44:50.559
And they were afraid to tell me about it.
00:44:50.880 --> 00:44:56.079
Like, what all these lies that are gonna trap you in this serving mode.
00:44:56.400 --> 00:44:58.000
That's embittering you.
00:44:58.480 --> 00:44:58.880
Yeah.
00:44:59.199 --> 00:44:59.840
Right.
00:45:00.719 --> 00:45:02.719
Jamie, you have been so generous.
00:45:02.880 --> 00:45:08.960
I I wanna uh you are 40 minutes over what I asked you to commit, and I thank you for that.
00:45:09.119 --> 00:45:15.920
So I I wanna honor you and also let you leave us with any story or or insight that God puts on your heart.
00:45:16.000 --> 00:45:25.920
But just to encourage y'all out there, um, you you know about the True Faith Journey, a nine-month framework for group discipleship to process these truths of identity.
00:45:26.159 --> 00:45:32.559
And uh this book, there are True Faced Journey groups right now, using this book uh to help guide people.
00:45:32.639 --> 00:45:39.440
As you know, we talk about shared identity, that we are saints and we are sons and daughters of the king imparted with his righteousness.
00:45:39.760 --> 00:45:43.519
Do we know our specific identity, how he's made us to live into that?
00:45:43.599 --> 00:45:46.880
And these handles for me of confession repentance.
00:45:46.960 --> 00:45:48.480
Uh, check that out.
00:45:48.559 --> 00:45:55.760
Uh jump into a true face journey group, go to living, go to identity exchange, buy living fearless.
00:45:55.920 --> 00:45:58.880
Uh, Jamie, thank you for what you're doing.
00:45:59.039 --> 00:46:04.400
Uh and uh if you want to leave us with anything, and then it'd be an honor for me to pray for you on the way out.
00:46:04.719 --> 00:46:05.199
Yeah.
00:46:05.440 --> 00:46:05.679
Yeah.
00:46:05.840 --> 00:46:06.159
Wow.
00:46:06.239 --> 00:46:23.199
I mean, yeah, I yeah, just I mean, there's a thousand stories going through my mind I'd love to tell, but um, yeah, I think I think just to just to remember that the ontology of God is love, the ontology of God is love, and being informs doing.
00:46:23.280 --> 00:46:31.039
So if God's being is love, then what he does has to be consistent with his unconditional love.
00:46:31.360 --> 00:46:34.480
Um even for even for his enemies.
00:46:34.719 --> 00:46:37.599
Even when we were his enemies, Christ died for us.
00:46:37.760 --> 00:46:39.599
And so just hold on to that.
00:46:39.679 --> 00:46:46.719
And anytime you stop believing that God is love, you need to come back to the Lord and just tell the truth.
00:46:46.800 --> 00:46:57.440
Like, Lord, I don't understand the kind of love that would be with me, that would never be disappointed in me, that would always, always want to be with me and always want to encourage me.
00:46:57.679 --> 00:46:59.920
Just I would just keep coming back.
00:47:00.159 --> 00:47:02.960
So easy to believe wrong things about God.
00:47:03.360 --> 00:47:05.519
Um, so yeah, blessings in that.
00:47:06.079 --> 00:47:09.119
Discipline of staying in the truth of God's love.
00:47:10.239 --> 00:47:11.599
Let it be so, God.
00:47:11.760 --> 00:47:22.719
And I pray for this brother and the ministry he's doing and his wife and his kids that you will protect him as you have so faithfully, and uh thank you for his ministry.
00:47:22.800 --> 00:47:30.639
Um expand it as as his faithfulness leads to more impact and reach uh for your kingdom.
00:47:30.800 --> 00:47:31.920
Thank you for this, brother.
00:47:32.079 --> 00:47:33.039
We love you.
00:47:33.840 --> 00:47:34.480
Thank you.
00:47:35.039 --> 00:47:36.239
Thanks, Jamie.
