00:00:04.400 --> 00:00:09.759
Welcome to This Life Gets Good, the podcast where we talk about what it actually means to feel good in your body.
00:00:09.919 --> 00:00:12.080
Because around here, we don't just settle for healthy.
00:00:12.480 --> 00:00:19.440
We believe you're allowed to feel good everywhere you go, at work, at home, and yes, even whilst you're burning your kids to practice.
00:00:19.600 --> 00:00:26.320
I'm Lauren Melton, founder of This Life Uncluttered, mom of two, and living proof that life can get really good after 40.
00:00:26.480 --> 00:00:33.679
I help high-achieving women to lose weight, feel hot and healthy, and bring that confidence into every part of their life without doing more or burning out.
00:00:36.240 --> 00:00:41.119
Today I'm gonna help you reframe your thinking on what is really required for weight loss.
00:00:41.280 --> 00:00:44.399
Like when do you need to be focused on the boring basics?
00:00:44.560 --> 00:00:49.359
And what to do when you already have those basics in place and still aren't getting results.
00:00:49.600 --> 00:00:56.479
This is when we need a more nuanced approach with strategies so that we can optimize things and get you the results.
00:00:56.719 --> 00:01:07.599
But one of the most frustrating things to see as a coach is all the garbage information that goes viral about wellness-related topics, especially when it comes to fitness and nutrition.
00:01:07.840 --> 00:01:20.319
And I get how this happens, since most coaches on social media aren't exactly excited to make a reel about the boring basics, like and the results that they'll get you, because that's not exactly what gets many clicks.
00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:28.159
But the truth is that the boring basics, when done consistently, are usually what drives the results you want.
00:01:28.400 --> 00:01:39.680
And often I see women stuck, not able to lose weight, trying to chase every new piece of nuanced advice from every PhD with a trending reel when they don't have the basics in place.
00:01:39.760 --> 00:01:42.719
And it's keeping a lot of women stuck.
00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:49.920
When it comes to weight loss, nutrition, and fitness, people can get really dogmatic, like believing there's one right way to do things.
00:01:50.079 --> 00:02:01.200
And when it comes to social media, that can be so overwhelming with all the like 60 seconds or less reels, often from doctors or PhDs telling you some pretty crazy stuff.
00:02:01.359 --> 00:02:13.120
Like just a few weeks ago, I saw a woman on one of Mel Robin's reels saying, Don't ever put a banana in a smoothie with berries if you want to get any benefit out of it, which is completely ridiculous.
00:02:13.280 --> 00:02:19.039
And to make matters even worse, this woman has a PhD in biomechanical science too.
00:02:19.280 --> 00:02:28.960
Previously, Mel had a guest on who's seen as an expert for perimenopause and menopausal women when it comes to fitness, who shared how harmful it is for women to work out fasted.
00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:35.360
And then there's all of us, 40 plus women, trying to eat healthy, trying to get our steps in workouts, reduce our stress, yada yada.
00:02:35.599 --> 00:02:39.439
And we hear advice like this and we question everything.
00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:46.719
And I'm over here wondering why are we demonizing bananas when most Americans don't even eat enough fruit or vegetables?
00:02:46.960 --> 00:02:53.840
And why the heck are we scaring women off from getting in a morning workout when most women aren't even working out?
00:02:54.080 --> 00:03:01.039
If you're on thyroid medication, which plenty of my clients are, and you have to take it first thing in the morning, you can't eat for 30 minutes.
00:03:01.199 --> 00:03:04.319
And let's say mornings are the only time that you can get your workout in.
00:03:04.560 --> 00:03:06.080
Should you not work out then?
00:03:06.319 --> 00:03:07.599
Absolutely not.
00:03:08.479 --> 00:03:13.039
And sometimes there is some truth to some of these things we hear.
00:03:13.199 --> 00:03:17.120
Like in general, most of this type of advice can be more harmful than good.
00:03:17.360 --> 00:03:24.159
But there are times when more nuanced advice out there on social media is actually accurate and could be helpful.
00:03:24.319 --> 00:03:28.800
But if you don't have the basics in place, it's often not going to do anything for you.
00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:33.439
So, yes, women do benefit from more nuanced advice.
00:03:33.599 --> 00:03:39.280
So there is a time and a place for it, which is a huge part of what I dive into with my one-on-one clients.
00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:44.080
And I am one of those women who have benefited from more nuanced advice.
00:03:44.240 --> 00:03:49.599
Like I definitely need to eat before my workouts, or I feel like absolute garbage if I don't have something in my stomach.
00:03:49.759 --> 00:04:00.400
And I have clients too, where I help them figure out exactly what nuanced strategies will work best for them with meal timing, specific foods, specific meal plans, their workout programming, recovery.
00:04:00.639 --> 00:04:06.000
But I also have plenty of clients who rinse and repeat the basics and are also seeing great results.
00:04:06.240 --> 00:04:10.639
So, what do you do when you hear all this conflicting information out there?
00:04:10.800 --> 00:04:11.919
Who do you trust?
00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:15.120
And how do you figure out what works best for you?
00:04:15.439 --> 00:04:21.600
And why is being a little bit of a boring basic bitch so necessary in the first place?
00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:33.680
Okay, here are my top recommendations and how to navigate all of this so that you know what to focus on to feel good in your body, to be able to lose weight, see those results without getting stressed out over all the noise that you might be hearing online.
00:04:34.079 --> 00:04:39.439
The first thing I want you to do is know who you can use as a trusted source of information.
00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:48.319
And this is a tough one since even doctors and PhDs and people with millions of followers are out there spewing total garbage information often.
00:04:48.560 --> 00:04:57.519
But in general, look to those who use evidence-based approaches, the ones who reference studies and not just one study with eight males in it.
00:04:57.759 --> 00:05:01.519
Recognize when things feel more clickbaity versus educational.
00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:08.079
And this is a tough one because even I have used hooks on podcast episodes and emails and reels to grab people's attention.
00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:10.480
Like I get it, it's hard to get people's attention.
00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:12.480
So we kind of have to do some of this.
00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:16.399
But be curious about what feels a little bit off there.
00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:24.160
And if you want to know who are some accounts that I trust and follow for this type of evidence-based information, check out the show notes.
00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:29.519
The next thing that's really helpful is making sure that you have someone who can ask these more nuanced questions.
00:05:29.680 --> 00:05:32.160
And this is when working with a coach is so helpful.
00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:36.480
So you have someone who you can ask what they think about these topics when you do hear them.
00:05:36.639 --> 00:05:42.399
I can't tell you how often clients come to me with something they heard on so-and-so's podcast or some viral reel going around.
00:05:42.480 --> 00:05:48.160
And now they're worried that they aren't going to get the quote unquote right things done to get results.
00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:55.680
Meanwhile, they're already getting incredible results because I've helped them build out a plan where they're consistently nailing the basics.
00:05:55.920 --> 00:06:01.040
Then we get more nuanced into ways that really optimize things so they feel incredible.
00:06:01.199 --> 00:06:10.000
And funny enough, they often start feeling incredible when they get the system in place to make these boring basics doable and can do them consistently.
00:06:10.319 --> 00:06:14.639
Sometimes we don't even have to get nuanced, but sometimes we do.
00:06:14.959 --> 00:06:18.720
This is why focusing on nailing the basics first is so key.
00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:25.759
Before you worry about whether fasted workouts are more optimal or not, first you need to be working out consistently for like a year.
00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:27.120
Yeah, like a year.
00:06:27.360 --> 00:06:34.319
Build the actual habits first before you try to like protein max anything or fiber max or max anything for that matter.
00:06:34.560 --> 00:06:38.879
If you're not sure what those basics are, here is where I'd start.
00:06:39.120 --> 00:06:40.800
Number one, steps.
00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:44.480
Minimum of 7k per day, but eight to 10K is more ideal.
00:06:44.639 --> 00:06:50.480
If you're not nailing that, that is the first thing I would focus on when it comes to weight loss.
00:06:50.720 --> 00:06:51.680
Hydration.
00:06:51.839 --> 00:06:57.439
A minimum of about half your body weight in ounces, typically around 84 ounces, is pretty ideal.
00:06:57.600 --> 00:07:03.680
Some people do better with more, some very petite women can do better with less, but somewhere around that.
00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:04.639
Sleep.
00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:11.279
I know you don't want to hear it, but if you're not sleeping for seven hours or more per night, you're not helping your body lose weight.
00:07:11.600 --> 00:07:21.040
So sleep, you can lose weight with lack of sleep, but it makes it a lot harder because it's harder to stay consistent doing the things you need to do when you have less energy all day.
00:07:21.199 --> 00:07:22.800
So get your sleep in.
00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:33.439
And workouts, a combination of strength training and cardio, you know, following something maybe two, three days a week would be a basic place I would highly recommend to start.
00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:42.800
With nutrition, focus on eating primarily whole foods over processed foods, around 30 grams of protein per meal as a minimum.
00:07:42.959 --> 00:07:46.879
And for fiber, you're gonna want at least 25 to 30 grams per day.
00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:52.639
This can vary obviously based on your size, but those are kind of good basics to try to hit.
00:07:52.959 --> 00:07:55.600
Alcohol, ideally, you're not drinking any.
00:07:55.759 --> 00:07:58.639
If you are, one to two drinks or less per week.
00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:01.199
And finally, stress management.
00:08:01.439 --> 00:08:10.879
If you do not have a toolbox of ways to support yourself, your stress bucket, when it overflows, it's gonna be really hard to lose weight.
00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:19.120
So if the only ways that you know how to reduce that stress and to relax and unwind involve food and alcohol, you're gonna need to build out that toolbox.
00:08:19.199 --> 00:08:21.920
And that's another basic that really needs to be in place.
00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:32.080
So if you haven't done the above, trust me, you do not need to worry about the banana disrupting the benefit of your smoothie or the timing of your meals and workouts.
00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:40.720
One thing I do with a lot of my clients is we don't talk about optimization until we feel really good about rinse and repeating the basics for a few months.
00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:48.159
And not because the nuanced stuff doesn't matter, because it generally does, but because the nuanced stuff can't help if the basics are not in place.
00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:52.159
You can't optimize a foundation that does not exist yet, right?
00:08:52.240 --> 00:08:58.080
Like you're not putting on this gorgeous master suite on the top level of your house without a foundation on the house.
00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:05.759
At the same time, that doesn't mean I'm not going to offer custom support ideas that might feel a little bit more nuanced.
00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:13.919
Like if a client is struggling with constipation, we are for sure going to get nuanced into helping her figure out how to go to the bathroom every single day without a struggle.
00:09:14.159 --> 00:09:25.039
And some of that advice might feel more nuanced, but you won't see me telling a client to prioritize meal timing to build more muscle in their workouts when she's still drinking alcohol every night.
00:09:25.200 --> 00:09:28.399
Like the alcohol is going to be offsetting the benefit of that.
00:09:28.799 --> 00:09:40.879
Or like I had a client come to me pretty stressed about whether she should be using a weighted best and doing inclined treadmill walks because she read about it somewhere where they said, like, literally, like all women over 40 have to be doing this.
00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:42.000
It's the missing piece.
00:09:42.240 --> 00:09:46.720
But when we looked at her actual routine, she was getting around 5,000 steps a day.
00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:50.240
Her sleep was somewhere around like five or six hours a night.
00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:53.840
And she wasn't close to hitting her protein target.
00:09:54.080 --> 00:09:58.879
Now, did I think that a weighted vest inclined walking was the missing piece?
00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:00.320
Absolutely not.
00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:04.240
The weighted vest incline walking wasn't gonna do anything here.
00:10:04.480 --> 00:10:06.480
The basics were the missing piece.
00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:12.559
And once we got those in place, her weight started moving without any fancy optimization at all.
00:10:12.720 --> 00:10:14.159
No weighted vest needed.
00:10:14.320 --> 00:10:18.799
And I want to be clear that I'm not saying the nuanced stuff is always wrong and never matters.
00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:20.799
It often truly does.
00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:24.559
And that's what I love digging into, particularly with my one-on-one clients.
00:10:24.720 --> 00:10:32.720
Like I have one client who meal timing truly matters or who fasted versus fed training really makes a difference, right?
00:10:32.799 --> 00:10:34.799
Like that stuff is really fun to get into.
00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:41.600
But the difference is we got to that nuance after the basics were locked in and producing results, not instead of them.
00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:47.120
And I know that sounds boring, but honestly, the boring basics, they're what really work.
00:10:47.360 --> 00:10:50.480
Look at most women who maintain a level of leanness year-round.
00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:53.840
They are rinse and repeating the boring basic shit day after day.
00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:55.360
They aren't doing anything fancy.
00:10:55.519 --> 00:10:59.360
They're typically eating the same breakfast, the same lunch, the same type of dinner.
00:10:59.519 --> 00:11:05.679
They're working out on the same days each week, they're doing the same workouts for a heck of a lot longer than you probably are now.
00:11:05.840 --> 00:11:08.000
They're not worried about needing variety.
00:11:08.159 --> 00:11:09.600
They're pretty boring.
00:11:09.840 --> 00:11:15.600
Like for me, for example, I've been doing the same lower and upper body workouts since January.
00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:16.799
Yes, that's right.
00:11:16.960 --> 00:11:21.759
For over seven months now, I've been doing the same movement patterns every freaking week.
00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:25.600
And listen, I know most women might find that a bit extreme.
00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:29.200
So I tend to keep workouts in the collective around eight weeks.
00:11:29.360 --> 00:11:35.600
And with one-on-one clients, I push them to get a little bit closer to 12 weeks or more so that we can really master the moves and get the most out of them.
00:11:35.840 --> 00:11:40.240
But they're not worried about novelty here when it comes to their food and workouts.
00:11:40.320 --> 00:11:43.919
They rinse and repeat, they know what makes them feel their best in their bodies.
00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:44.720
Boring.
00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:46.240
I know, but it works.
00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:53.840
Doing the boring basics over and over, it's typically pretty hard to do for most moms over 40 because of all your navigating.
00:11:54.080 --> 00:11:55.919
And that's where I come in.
00:11:56.080 --> 00:11:59.279
That's where I help you build the systems that make it possible.
00:11:59.519 --> 00:12:01.519
And dare I say, even fun.
00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:09.679
I promise you it can be a little bit fun because feeling good in your body, feeling hot, that is fun.
00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:11.360
Truly, it is.
00:12:11.600 --> 00:12:21.440
Less to think about when it comes to these habits so that you can put your energy and time into things in the rest of your life, like relationships, maybe even a hobby.
00:12:21.759 --> 00:12:22.879
Imagine that.
00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:29.440
The most successful women I know when it comes to their health are not doing the most interesting things.
00:12:29.679 --> 00:12:30.399
They aren't.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:34.559
They're the ones doing the most boring things the most consistently.
00:12:34.799 --> 00:12:39.919
Sleep, steps, protein, strength training, water, day after day after day.
00:12:40.159 --> 00:12:42.240
That's the quote unquote secret.
00:12:42.480 --> 00:12:46.240
And I know it's not going to go viral, but it works.
00:12:46.639 --> 00:12:49.120
And nuance does matter.
00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:51.519
This is one of where we hold space for both.
00:12:51.840 --> 00:13:07.919
So if you're ready to get the support to make the boring basics happen on autopilot and have me at your side for that nuanced support, then we should chat about one-on-one coaching because this is where we not only lock in the basics, but we go deep into whatever you need to feel your best.
00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:12.559
And then I custom tailor the support based on that, your specific life and your needs.
00:13:12.799 --> 00:13:25.840
Like I just onboarded a new one-on-one client who upgraded from the collective and we built her custom workouts based on her access to her home equipment, a meal strategy to help her reduce her sugar cravings and yeast symptoms that she's been experiencing for years.
00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:36.080
And we have her now in this body reconp phase where we're focused on really pushing in her workouts with a slight calorie deficit so she can both add muscle and reduce body fat at the same time.
00:13:36.240 --> 00:13:37.440
Yeah, that is possible.
00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:44.080
It's a very specific approach with nutrition, workout, and recovery, and with one-on-one support, of course.
00:13:44.320 --> 00:13:47.360
So head to the show notes if this sounds like something that you're ready for.
00:13:47.519 --> 00:13:51.360
Fill out the application for us to see if we'd be a good fit to work together.
00:13:51.440 --> 00:13:53.519
I'd love to see if I can help you out.
00:13:53.840 --> 00:13:57.039
Thank you so much for listening to this episode of This Life Gets Good.
00:13:57.200 --> 00:14:00.320
