Data, Dollars, and the Future of Therapy: The Therapist Resource Institute with Sharon Harper, LCSW

WEBVTT
00:00:09.839 --> 00:00:24.800
Hey everybody, my name is Civi Sucreman, and this is Therapists Unchained, a podcast hoping to empower, inspire, and educate mental health clinicians across the country facing this unique systems that we're facing and the ever-evolving mental health landscape.
00:00:25.039 --> 00:00:26.719
Today I have a very special guest.
00:00:26.800 --> 00:00:34.320
Oh, I think all my guests are special, but uh I feel like I have recently met someone who is like a sister from a different Mr.
00:00:34.560 --> 00:00:35.359
as they say.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:42.079
Uh today, joining us, we have Sharon Harper, who is a licensed clinical social worker.
00:00:42.240 --> 00:00:57.439
She's a private practice owner, and she's the founder of a really, really cool new organization called the Therapist Resource Institute, which is a national platform created to connect therapists across all states, licenses and career stages.
00:00:57.679 --> 00:01:06.719
It focuses on strengthening referral networks, providing practical resources, and building collective voice in a field that is often fragmented.
00:01:06.959 --> 00:01:12.400
If that sounds kind of familiar, it's because I feel like Sharon and I were separated at birth.
00:01:12.560 --> 00:01:16.319
And I don't know how we've gone this long without meeting.
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:17.439
Exactly.
00:01:17.680 --> 00:01:18.640
Exactly.
00:01:18.879 --> 00:01:25.280
I feel exactly not only without meeting, but without like aligning and joining the force.
00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:27.120
You know, I feel like here we are.
00:01:27.280 --> 00:01:27.840
We're doing it now.
00:01:28.319 --> 00:01:28.719
Finally.
00:01:28.959 --> 00:01:29.680
We're doing it now.
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:33.200
So I think Sharon and I were talking about this right before we started recording.
00:01:33.359 --> 00:01:37.359
Um, as I say in a lot of my podcasts, like I kind of stalk people on social media.
00:01:37.519 --> 00:01:39.920
And when I see somebody that I'm like, ooh, who's that?
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:40.879
What are they doing?
00:01:41.120 --> 00:01:43.760
I always raise my hand and try to get folks' attention.
00:01:43.840 --> 00:01:50.560
And I'm always impressed with folks that actually like are interested in, like, wait, who is this person waving their hand at me?
00:01:50.799 --> 00:01:52.879
And that's what happened with Sharon.
00:01:53.200 --> 00:02:08.000
Sharon, you had a reel, I think, on probably Facebook, um, where you were talking about the therapist uh research institute or resource institute, and it just really struck me where I was like, How have I not heard about you?
00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:13.360
Because, and I want you to talk about your work with TRI and building that.
00:02:13.599 --> 00:02:16.240
Um, but it just it felt so aligned.
00:02:16.319 --> 00:02:17.680
And I know that you felt the same way.
00:02:17.759 --> 00:02:27.280
I think you then messaged me on LinkedIn and was like, I just checked you out, and I listened to your first episode of Therapist Unchained, and I think you wrote, and I almost fell over.
00:02:28.639 --> 00:02:32.000
Yes, literally, I almost fell out my chair.
00:02:33.439 --> 00:02:35.680
So um I'm always curious.
00:02:35.840 --> 00:02:49.599
First of all, if you could just give us sort of a little background on like your trajectory in the field, and then kind of give us an introduction to what TRI is and what your vision for it is, and what led you to build this organization.
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:50.319
Sure.
00:02:50.560 --> 00:02:58.000
So I, you know, there are some therapists that and and professional mental health people who get into this field right out of college or know they want to do it.
00:02:58.159 --> 00:02:58.960
I did not do that.
00:02:59.039 --> 00:03:06.319
I actually, my early degrees were in early childhood education and human development, and I thought I was gonna be like a daycare director.
00:03:06.479 --> 00:03:08.800
Uh, and then I did not go in that direction.
00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:10.240
Once you'd been fun.
00:03:10.319 --> 00:03:12.159
You would have been a fun daycare director, I think.
00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:13.120
I totally.
00:03:13.280 --> 00:03:21.360
Uh, but I realized um, I just every part of my career, and I and I say this for the people out there who think they need to know everything.
00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:28.479
I'm an old lady, you don't need to know everything, and things change, and sometimes you just gotta follow the winds and you just gotta see where everything leads you.
00:03:28.719 --> 00:03:39.680
So, believe it or not, after my bachelor's degree, I went and I was working in fundraising for nonprofits, and then I ended up um becoming a radio broadcaster.
00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:52.719
And so I spent uh 14 years traveling up and down the East Coast doing radio shows, doing, I mean, all types talk radio, uh, adult contemporary, triple A, rock, country.
00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:55.759
I mean, I don't think there's a format I haven't done, to tell you the truth.
00:03:56.080 --> 00:03:58.719
But radio changed a lot while I was in it.
00:03:58.800 --> 00:04:03.919
And I tell this story because this is going to lead also into why I created TRI.
00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:05.759
Because radio changed a lot.
00:04:05.840 --> 00:04:13.280
When I first started in it, it was buildings and there would be like five stations there, and every station would have people in it live.
00:04:13.520 --> 00:04:15.599
And it was fun and it was exciting.
00:04:15.840 --> 00:04:28.160
By the time I left radio, you'd be lucky if there was one person on the air live in five stations because of syndication or because of um recordings, because of technology and consolidation, right?
00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:30.319
We opened up the consolidation laws.
00:04:30.399 --> 00:04:39.199
So one company could, you know, it used to be, I don't know if people know this, but back in the day, one company could not have, you know, the the monoliths that they have now, right?
00:04:39.360 --> 00:04:39.839
They couldn't.
00:04:39.920 --> 00:04:40.800
That was against the law.
00:04:40.879 --> 00:04:42.240
And then they changed that law.
00:04:42.399 --> 00:04:48.560
And then all of a sudden, you could have one company that could literally have own half of the South.
00:04:48.639 --> 00:04:52.480
Like, so you're you think you're getting your information from different companies and you're not.
00:04:52.560 --> 00:05:01.199
You're getting it from one company, and that one company, and I and I sat in rooms where they were like, don't say this in news, do that, like, because they own everything, they control everything.
00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:07.920
So by the time I left radio, um, I I really always had the passion again for early childhood education.
00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:16.399
And when I went back and looked at my stuff in psychology, and when I looked at my stuff, I was like, oh, all my A's were always in psychology, all my A's were in sociology, all my so that was it.
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:20.480
I decided to go back to school, and my husband said, if you're gonna do it, do it full time, like go all in.
00:05:20.560 --> 00:05:21.199
And that's what I did.
00:05:21.279 --> 00:05:25.120
I went back for my master's degree, I was much older than most of the people I was in school with.
00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:26.240
I was 40.
00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:30.079
Um, and so I I loved it.
00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:32.720
Like I became a licensed clinical social worker.
00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:37.279
I decided to do social work because I like the micro, meso, and macro field.
00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:44.639
I like the idea of thinking how the environment and cultures and things that happen to us as a people collective affects us.
00:05:44.800 --> 00:05:47.120
And so uh I've been doing that.
00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:53.680
And I went from and in my early career, of course, I did what most of us used to do intensive in home.
00:05:53.839 --> 00:06:00.959
And I worked at a hospital, and then I became an acute care hospital manager, and then I went back and I did outpatient.
00:06:01.199 --> 00:06:06.079
And uh at some point I I knew I wanted to be my own boss, and so I went into private practice.
00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:11.759
So that is how I that was my um path to get to private practice.
00:06:11.920 --> 00:06:14.399
And private practice came very easy for me.
00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:16.160
I really did well very quickly.
00:06:16.319 --> 00:06:20.240
I had given the the agency that I was working with at the time, I had given them two years.
00:06:20.399 --> 00:06:23.839
I said, Hey, do you mind if I work for you part-time and I'm gonna build this practice?
00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:27.279
And I didn't have to, I could have left them in a year, but I had I had committed.
00:06:27.360 --> 00:06:29.839
And so I had done that and I had stayed working with them.
00:06:30.079 --> 00:06:34.399
And then people started coming to me when I did really well in private practice.
00:06:34.560 --> 00:06:39.360
Friends and people I used to go to school with would call me and be like, Hey, Sharon, I'm gonna be in the area, you know, going, can we go out to lunch?
00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:41.600
And we go out to lunch and they were like, So tell me about private practice.
00:06:41.680 --> 00:06:43.279
Like, how'd you do so well?
00:06:43.519 --> 00:06:51.600
Uh, and so then I started consulting on the side and working with people on their psychology today profiles or working on their referral sources.
00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:55.120
And that was my first inkling that things were changing.
00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:59.279
When I was consulting, because what I had gone through and how easy it was for me.
00:06:59.360 --> 00:07:01.600
Now, granted, I'm I'm comfortable talking to people.
00:07:01.759 --> 00:07:06.079
So I think, well, of course, that helps in a first meeting, or that helps, you know, when you're building business.
00:07:06.399 --> 00:07:11.839
But the referral sources and the online systems were all changing tremendously.
00:07:12.079 --> 00:07:14.800
And that was one of my first inklings, as I said.
00:07:14.959 --> 00:07:26.160
Then I started working with another therapist, and she was in the Richmond area, and she had had a group practice, she had done space solutions, but she had moved over into credentialing, and she started telling me how much was changing.
00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:45.120
That it used to be getting credentialed would take a couple of months, and now it was months with it, you know, capital M underlined, highlighted, and that all these systems were being invaded by a lot of companies that were changing both our referral sources, our directories, our credentialing.
00:07:45.279 --> 00:07:47.040
And that's when I started looking into that.
00:07:47.199 --> 00:07:52.879
And once I found out the connection to insurance companies in this, well, that had me spitten mad, I'm not gonna lie.
00:07:52.959 --> 00:08:01.120
Like I was like, oh my gosh, how do people not know that these systems, like that insurance companies are now investing in them?
00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:20.160
And so when they're holding up certain people, or or I shouldn't say holding up purposely, but when when there's a delay in individual, you know, therapists in private practice or small practices, when there's a delay for them getting business and there's not a delay for a platform that an insurance company has invested in.
00:08:20.399 --> 00:08:24.639
Well, now we have now I went from spit and man to now having a real issue.
00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:25.600
Oh, absolutely.
00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:27.920
And I think we talked about this in our pre-interview.
00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:30.319
They're how blatant they are about it now, too.
00:08:30.480 --> 00:08:41.600
Like I keep seeing this headway reel on Facebook, I think, where there's the woman and she's like, she says, they make it so that I can get higher reimbursement rates than I could on my own.
00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:44.399
And I was like, You're saying the quiet part out loud.
00:08:44.639 --> 00:08:47.120
Like, how are they having these special relationships?
00:08:47.360 --> 00:08:53.519
So, and and then there is the the rapid credentialing as well, which is rapid credentialing, but but and here's another problem.
00:08:53.679 --> 00:09:00.879
And so my thing is therapists can work anywhere they want, but I want you to have the information because I'm not against therapists trying to make a living.
00:09:01.039 --> 00:09:03.440
I'm not against therapists trying to get their business up and going.
00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:08.240
I'm against when they don't tell you or when there's a lot of information that are is missing.
00:09:08.559 --> 00:09:09.600
So let's talk about that.
00:09:09.759 --> 00:09:12.320
Let's talk about what you just said about higher rates.
00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:13.200
Hold on.
00:09:13.440 --> 00:09:19.840
Do me a favor, guys, before you go and sign up with a company, check and see if there's an insurance company that is invested in it.
00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:32.399
Because if there's an investment in it, then they might be in profit sharing, which means you think you're getting more per accession, but you're paying a fee to a platform and the platform may be giving it back to the insurance company in profit sharing.
00:09:32.559 --> 00:09:33.759
You did not make more money.
00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:36.080
You're not making more, that's not making more money.
00:09:36.320 --> 00:09:41.679
In fact, you might be making less because you're giving away fees that if you were on your own, you wouldn't be paying.
00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:45.759
I don't pay any fees, right, to get my to get my um reimbursement.
00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:49.919
I don't, I don't pay a platform a fee to get my reimbursement, and you are.
00:09:50.720 --> 00:09:52.399
So are you really making more?
00:09:52.559 --> 00:09:53.919
I'm not so sure about that.
00:09:54.080 --> 00:09:57.440
And then we have the second layer, which I know that you've talked about.
00:09:57.679 --> 00:10:03.200
Companies that tell you they're gonna give you free things and they're taking client data.
00:10:03.440 --> 00:10:03.759
Yep.
00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:15.919
Even if it's aggregated, and by the way, aggregated means they're just taking names off things, but if they are giving information to insurance companies, I need everyone who is listening today to think about why.
00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:18.960
Why, first of all, why is an insurance paying you more?
00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:21.120
Well, yeah, why why would that ever start?
00:10:21.200 --> 00:10:25.840
Right, because they're they're nickel and diming everyone else, and they have the right to come back and ask for money back.
00:10:25.919 --> 00:10:30.080
We can spend a whole nother episode talking about the ridiculosity of clawbacks, right?
00:10:30.159 --> 00:10:33.039
Because I think that I don't understand how that's even remotely legal.
00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:45.600
Well, uh, and then I mean, again, not to go on a tangent with that, but and the fact that you have these ERISA plans, which are these the employer employer funded plans where they don't even have to follow clawback rules.
00:10:45.759 --> 00:10:46.879
They can do whatever they want.
00:10:46.960 --> 00:10:53.440
And there's no I was told to call the Department of Labor because and then the Department of Labor was like, we can't do anything.
00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:56.320
So I mean, that's a whole nother that's a whole other thing.
00:10:56.639 --> 00:10:56.799
Right.
00:10:56.879 --> 00:10:59.120
No, but that's exactly it, that powerlessness, right?
00:10:59.279 --> 00:10:59.519
Exactly.
00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:06.799
So so if if people are telling you you're making more money, but nobody's actually sitting down with you and doing the math, I think that's questionable.
00:11:07.200 --> 00:11:19.120
If things are moving quicker in a system when you're in a system where the insurance company gets something out of it, whether they get the data from clients or they get money from a profit sharing or they get like, I think that's questionable.
00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:21.679
And I think therapists have the right to know about that.
00:11:21.919 --> 00:11:38.240
I think that if there's systems where they're telling you something is free or quick, and then they're taking information and they're using it to decide in the future, maybe what DX's, you know, uh cost them a lot of money.
00:11:38.320 --> 00:11:40.720
So maybe we don't approve those anymore at all.
00:11:41.039 --> 00:11:49.039
Or maybe we know that those are the ones that are easy to call back on, or like so, so again, it's all about these systems.
00:11:49.919 --> 00:11:52.159
And now we have to go to the next, sorry, I'm just gonna launch.
00:11:52.240 --> 00:11:52.960
I'm happy to you guys.
00:11:53.360 --> 00:11:53.840
Oh, I love it.
00:11:53.919 --> 00:11:54.399
I love it.
00:11:54.559 --> 00:11:54.720
Okay.
00:11:54.879 --> 00:11:55.120
Do it.
00:11:55.360 --> 00:12:08.399
Let's let's go to the next part of the system because this is where I have a significant complaint that I don't understand why our associations aren't being louder and bolder and braver about this.
00:12:08.559 --> 00:12:17.039
I don't understand why our conferences are promoting companies that may be hurting our not just our therapists, but our clients.
00:12:17.360 --> 00:12:28.960
Like, if there's lawsuits or complaints with the Better Business Bureau and these things are hurting therapists and clients, why are they front and center at our biggest conventions or on our industry magazines?
00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:31.200
That is very troublesome to me.
00:12:31.519 --> 00:12:33.519
Where is the checks and balances?
00:12:33.679 --> 00:12:36.240
Like, I do so these are the things.
00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:41.759
I'm just the type of person that was like, hey, this is kind of part of my French, but this is bullshit.
00:12:41.919 --> 00:12:43.600
Why isn't anyone doing anything about this?
00:12:43.840 --> 00:12:57.679
Well, and it's so and it's so perfect that you're saying that because, first of all, I did have um the executive director of our local chapter of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, the Washington Mental Health Counselors Association, and we talked a little bit about this.
00:12:57.919 --> 00:13:10.080
What's really resonating was the the where this podcast actually was birthed was from a um the American Counseling Association has a magazine called Counseling Today or something like that.
00:13:10.480 --> 00:13:20.080
And I saw an article where they were basically applauding these tech platforms, these VC-backed platforms, and they were naming them and they were like, this is great for the field.
00:13:20.159 --> 00:13:23.360
And I was fucking furious.
00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:27.600
And I wrote a letter and started get trying to get people to sign off on the letter.
00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:29.200
So I a hundred percent agree with you.
00:13:29.360 --> 00:13:32.159
And I don't know what the end game is.
00:13:32.320 --> 00:13:38.159
I it I think they they put it under this guise of client access, that it opens up client access.
00:13:38.320 --> 00:13:54.399
But I think the single biggest issue with our professional associations, and I'm not sure how you feel about NESW because we have different licenses, but I can speak to the ACA in the messaging that I've gotten, which is that professional association isn't actually for the professional.
00:13:54.639 --> 00:13:54.879
Right.
00:13:55.039 --> 00:13:56.080
It's not for the professional.
00:13:56.320 --> 00:14:05.840
They don't advocate, they advocate for the profession, they advocate for client access, but I never hear them advocating for the clinician.
00:14:06.159 --> 00:14:06.720
Right.
00:14:06.960 --> 00:14:08.399
Well, and is it client access?
00:14:08.480 --> 00:14:13.360
Or again, are they is is data going to places that our association should also be sticking up for?
00:14:13.440 --> 00:14:17.759
So let's pretend like they they they backed into this, they didn't realize it, they have these agreements.
00:14:17.919 --> 00:14:20.559
Okay, now there's been like a huge lawsuit, right?
00:14:20.639 --> 00:14:21.519
With headway.
00:14:21.759 --> 00:14:22.799
And they're not alone.
00:14:22.960 --> 00:14:24.799
Like there's complaints, there's all these things.
00:14:24.879 --> 00:14:28.159
We know about the zombie profiles, which you know, I'm sure you and I are gonna get into.
00:14:28.399 --> 00:14:33.600
But um, so we know all these things are hurting not just the clinicians, but the clients.
00:14:34.080 --> 00:14:42.399
And and if and if associations can't stick up for us, and you go to Capitol Hill because of immigration, why are you not going for data protection for our clients?
00:14:42.480 --> 00:14:45.600
Why are you not going for data protection for the therapists?
00:14:46.240 --> 00:14:48.639
This is our this is our therapeutic stuff.
00:14:48.799 --> 00:14:56.799
I wrote in one of my newsletters, if you had a list of the things, the complaints that these companies have, and it was a local like clinic, right?
00:14:56.879 --> 00:15:11.360
And you were like, oh, they data share, they spread names, they're looking for how not they're giving you short-term access, but with the long-term goal of not paying so much for them to get this care, or maybe to figure out which ones are too costly, would you ever send your clients there?
00:15:11.519 --> 00:15:19.600
Like would you ever in a million, if you there was this local place that had these data breaches and all these things, you would never in a million years think of sending your clients to it.
00:15:19.759 --> 00:15:22.000
You would that would not be on your referral source.
00:15:22.159 --> 00:15:33.919
So why are the biggest names in the business that have the most money, by the way, why are you partnering with these places and promoting them when you don't have to?
00:15:34.399 --> 00:15:35.279
Money.
00:15:35.919 --> 00:15:37.120
But they have enough.
00:15:37.360 --> 00:15:40.080
And and by the way, are they shooting themselves in the foot?
00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:41.519
Are you making a lot of money right now?
00:15:41.600 --> 00:15:42.960
But are you thinking, what happens in three?
00:15:43.120 --> 00:15:55.039
You know, because we already start are starting to see what I say is the second wave, which is super scary, guys, by the way, which is when they st when they start combining, when these companies are like, okay, there's 37 of us, there's a new one every day.
00:15:55.120 --> 00:16:02.399
There's literally, and you know, I'm at a place now where a lot of the TRI members and even the people who just read our newsletter, write me and say, Hey, Sharon, I got this email.
00:16:02.480 --> 00:16:03.200
Who's this company?
00:16:03.279 --> 00:16:03.679
Who owns it?
00:16:03.759 --> 00:16:09.279
And I do the research, and I'm like, okay, this was their seed round, this is their funding stream, this is who's in it.
00:16:09.440 --> 00:16:11.120
And they're like, holy cow.
00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:11.519
Right?
00:16:11.679 --> 00:16:13.919
They're like, because but I'll do the research.
00:16:14.480 --> 00:16:16.320
Didn't now I'm gonna get it wrong.
00:16:16.639 --> 00:16:19.600
Alma just merged with one, and now I can't spring out.
00:16:19.840 --> 00:16:20.240
Was it spring?
00:16:20.480 --> 00:16:21.840
Yeah, so we're already seeing it.
00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:23.360
We're already seeing it.
00:16:23.600 --> 00:16:23.919
Right.
00:16:24.080 --> 00:16:25.679
And what happens when they keep going?
00:16:25.759 --> 00:16:27.679
And who who owns your notes?
00:16:27.840 --> 00:16:28.960
Who owns your stuff?
00:16:29.120 --> 00:16:32.080
What happens when these by the way, forget when these companies are doing well.
00:16:32.159 --> 00:16:33.360
What happens when these companies fold?
00:16:33.440 --> 00:16:34.720
Because there's 37 of them.
00:16:34.879 --> 00:16:36.720
Where does where does all your client stuff go?
00:16:36.799 --> 00:16:41.679
Are you just gonna wake up one morning and not be able to get into your system and you don't have your clients' numbers, you don't have anything?
00:16:41.840 --> 00:16:50.320
I mean, there's so many things that I wish the organizations that are supposed to be helping us had looked into, thought about, questioned.
00:16:50.960 --> 00:17:03.360
But now that other people are, my real problem is that they're not working with, like I have multiple people, because I can see their emails, who are with companies that should be reaching out to me saying, How do we, how do we fix this?
00:17:03.440 --> 00:17:04.319
How do we make this better?
00:17:04.480 --> 00:17:05.839
And instead they're not.
00:17:06.160 --> 00:17:06.720
They're not.
00:17:06.799 --> 00:17:08.400
They're not they're not looking for a way.
00:17:08.559 --> 00:17:14.160
As you said, maybe maybe it's the check, maybe it's other things, but they're not looking for a way to go back to protect us.
00:17:14.319 --> 00:17:17.200
And that is why TRI is very strict.
00:17:17.279 --> 00:17:23.440
I mean, I have a whole forum that you want to advertise with us, I have a whole forum that you have to fill out that says, Where's your money from?
00:17:23.519 --> 00:17:25.359
Are you are you licensed in the United States?
00:17:25.440 --> 00:17:26.240
Where's your money from?
00:17:26.400 --> 00:17:28.160
What do you what's your what's your exit plan?
00:17:28.319 --> 00:17:35.759
By the way, when I was building TRI, what I learned is if you're getting funding streams, you have to, in most cases, have an exit plan.
00:17:36.480 --> 00:17:36.880
Mm-hmm.
00:17:37.200 --> 00:17:38.400
Does anyone know that?
00:17:38.799 --> 00:17:44.880
Can you quickly go into like talk more about what TRI actually is so people can put this into a context?
00:17:45.200 --> 00:17:45.759
That would be great.
00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:46.960
Oh, yes, absolutely.
00:17:47.119 --> 00:17:50.880
So um I thought the first thing that I would do would was form a union.
00:17:51.039 --> 00:17:55.599
Hello, everybody, all the unionizers, because I see this all the time on social media.
00:17:55.759 --> 00:17:58.319
All the unionizers, high five with you.
00:17:58.480 --> 00:17:59.359
But we can't do that.
00:17:59.519 --> 00:17:59.839
We can't.
00:18:00.640 --> 00:18:01.119
We can't.
00:18:01.359 --> 00:18:06.799
And that's I have to say, this is funny because I when you said that the first thing you thought of was to form a union.
00:18:06.960 --> 00:18:13.680
I just had a I just had like this flashback to my first job out of my master's degree in Chicago.
00:18:13.839 --> 00:18:19.599
I was working for community mental health, being paid like nothing, like 28 grand a year.
00:18:19.680 --> 00:18:21.359
It really, really bad.
00:18:21.680 --> 00:18:26.000
And in that job, I contacted the SEIU to try to start a union.
00:18:26.160 --> 00:18:27.839
So it's just funny, and I'd forgotten about that.
00:18:27.920 --> 00:18:30.079
But when you just said that, I was like, that's interesting.
00:18:30.240 --> 00:18:32.960
That was my first thought, too, when I got into the field was we need a union.
00:18:33.200 --> 00:18:33.759
We need a union.
00:18:33.920 --> 00:18:34.559
We need a union.
00:18:34.799 --> 00:18:35.119
I'm sorry.
00:18:35.200 --> 00:18:37.839
I'm sorry to interrupt, but like continue with your path here.
00:18:38.079 --> 00:18:40.720
Well, it just shows how many of us have thought there's something missing here.
00:18:40.799 --> 00:18:43.440
There's not an organized group that protects us.
00:18:43.599 --> 00:18:51.519
And the reason, for those who don't know the end of this story, that Civia and I do know, the reason we can't do that is because we don't work for one company.
00:18:51.680 --> 00:18:53.200
We don't work in one industry.
00:18:53.359 --> 00:19:03.920
We work in healthcare, we work in higher education, we work in regular school systems, we work in jails, we work for ourselves, we work in group practices, we work, we are not in one system.
00:19:04.400 --> 00:19:08.799
When you think of a union, you think of everybody in a car union, right?
00:19:08.880 --> 00:19:12.559
Everyone who's unionizing, everyone is working in the car manufacturing industry.
00:19:12.720 --> 00:19:13.279
We are not.
00:19:13.440 --> 00:19:15.759
We are maybe some of us work in a car industry.
00:19:15.839 --> 00:19:16.400
Who knows?
00:19:16.559 --> 00:19:24.160
We are so far all over the map that we we do not have one system that we would be trying to bargain with.
00:19:24.400 --> 00:19:29.839
My second idea was with legal counsel was then what can we do?
00:19:30.079 --> 00:19:39.680
And I realized the reason our associations are not working is because our associations, as you just said in this interview, are by license.
00:19:39.920 --> 00:19:42.079
Our licenses are by states.
00:19:42.480 --> 00:19:46.960
And then in the individual states, we have these job settings, job titles, niches.
00:19:47.359 --> 00:19:55.359
I mean, we have lots of individual places, but nobody ever said, well, how do we go across?
00:19:55.920 --> 00:19:58.400
And TRI was built to go across.
00:19:58.640 --> 00:20:11.119
I decided it would be a professional membership community, a real professional membership community, not for one part of our job, for every part of our job and for every job, for every person, every license.
00:20:11.279 --> 00:20:15.039
So we go all the way from master's level students up to retirees.
00:20:15.119 --> 00:20:28.400
I actually have two retirees that are, or one who's a retiring and one who's a retiree, trying to help me put together enough programs in there so that they feel like they're part of the business when they're sort of doing that, like I've stepped out of direct care or I've stepped out of this job, but I don't want to like have nothing.
00:20:28.559 --> 00:20:29.359
I want to stay involved.
00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:30.799
I want to mentor somebody told me.
00:20:30.880 --> 00:20:32.160
I want to, I want to do things.
00:20:32.319 --> 00:20:35.039
I just don't want to do it like in the job that I was doing it.
00:20:35.279 --> 00:20:42.160
So I decided that our professional membership community would be there for everyone.
00:20:42.400 --> 00:20:43.119
Every single one.
00:20:43.279 --> 00:20:45.920
By the way, if you are on one of these platforms, you're welcome in there.
00:20:46.000 --> 00:20:49.839
I'm not gonna shame you that we're not allowed, by the way, when you get there, you have to sign an agreement.
00:20:49.920 --> 00:20:53.279
You are not allowed to have, you know, mean girl energy, tech row energy.
00:20:53.440 --> 00:20:58.240
Like you, this is a welcoming, supportive, no dumb questions type of place.
00:20:58.480 --> 00:21:06.640
This is where everyone can go and we've already had people talk about I'm feeling vulnerable because, you know, uh I don't for the first time I don't have a wait list.
00:21:06.799 --> 00:21:10.480
We've had people in there talking about one of my clients noticed I was sad.
00:21:10.880 --> 00:21:12.319
We've had people talking about taxes.
00:21:12.480 --> 00:21:27.920
We've had people talking, like this is the type of place where you can really talk about what it's like to be in this field and supported, not some anonymous Facebook person who starts saying, you should know that, or that somebody asked that question seven years ago.
00:21:28.079 --> 00:21:29.200
Why are you asking that question?
00:21:29.680 --> 00:21:31.119
This is not shame-based.
00:21:31.359 --> 00:21:41.359
The idea started to give us power in these systems, but what I realized is we also needed day-to-day support for sustainability because our exit rates are pretty darn big.
00:21:41.519 --> 00:21:41.920
Oh, yeah.
00:21:42.319 --> 00:21:43.440
We don't want to keep doing that.
00:21:43.599 --> 00:21:59.759
We want to be able to stay in this career for as long as we want, for making as much money as we need to live, truly live, but with the sense of community, even if you're a private practitioner or if you're the only, you know, therapist at a jail, or if you're the school social worker or a school psychologist.
00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:12.880
Like we needed a place where all of us could come together and then talk about these things that are coming in, then talk about the places that are not representing us correctly, and going to them and saying, No, I'm not directing it.
00:22:12.960 --> 00:22:15.039
I'm gonna let the members tell me what they care about.
00:22:15.279 --> 00:22:22.079
And then I'm going to go to Congress and I'm going to go to the associations and I'm going to say, I would like to be the bridge.
00:22:22.480 --> 00:22:27.200
I'm not gonna I don't want to shame you, but thing, but you guys have like things have gone through your fingers.
00:22:27.359 --> 00:22:30.559
So how do we come together and start getting some of our power back?
00:22:30.960 --> 00:22:31.599
A hundred percent.
00:22:31.680 --> 00:22:33.839
I mean, and that's like the whole reason for the podcast.
00:22:34.000 --> 00:22:41.599
Because I have met so many amazing people from all over the country while doing this podcast, realizing we need to know about each other.
00:22:42.240 --> 00:22:48.480
Because you shouldn't be alone going to Congress when I know a bunch of other people over here who are putting policy proposals together.
00:22:48.640 --> 00:22:49.279
Like, that's right.
00:22:49.519 --> 00:22:50.720
Why are we doing this separately?
00:22:50.880 --> 00:22:52.319
Why are we not connecting with each other?
00:22:52.400 --> 00:23:05.599
Which is what I loved about TRI because it felt so aligned with what I'm trying to do, which is like, hey, everybody, like I keep saying, this podcast, I feel like my goal is for it to be a megaphone, to be like, hey, everybody, this is what's happening.
00:23:05.839 --> 00:23:10.640
We need to understand this and to be able to highlight folks like you who are doing work.
00:23:10.720 --> 00:23:12.559
So people aren't reinventing the wheel.
00:23:12.720 --> 00:23:16.720
We shouldn't have 10 different people all over the place trying to do the exact same thing, right?
00:23:16.880 --> 00:23:19.200
Because there's power in numbers and we should be coming together.
00:23:19.279 --> 00:23:20.480
We have a louder voice.
00:23:20.720 --> 00:23:21.200
That's right.
00:23:21.359 --> 00:23:23.519
And there's more bandwidth because you have more people.
00:23:23.680 --> 00:23:25.440
Because it's this is hard stuff.
00:23:25.519 --> 00:23:29.119
I mean, we're fighting the biggest systems that exist.
00:23:29.680 --> 00:23:31.599
And so we can't do it in isolation.
00:23:31.680 --> 00:23:40.799
So I love this idea of community that you're building with TRI because that would exactly, and we've already talked too, like we're gonna do something together.
00:23:40.960 --> 00:23:41.599
I know we will.
00:23:41.680 --> 00:23:42.640
We've already talked about that.
00:23:42.799 --> 00:23:56.319
Like, there is there's enough of uniqueness in what we're both doing, but enough overlap in what we're both doing that I would, you know, and Sharon knows this, that uh I want to find a way to partner with you to get the word out on what you're doing.
00:23:56.480 --> 00:24:04.079
Because I think the other thing is people can sometimes get too precious with this stuff too, and it defeats totally the bigger goal of where we're trying to go, right?
00:24:04.240 --> 00:24:05.279
And I guess I get it.
00:24:05.359 --> 00:24:06.240
There's a lot of ownership.
00:24:06.319 --> 00:24:09.359
There's a listen, there's a lot of hard I know what I've put into this business.
00:24:09.519 --> 00:24:12.240
I know the hours, I know that I know the getting up at 5 a.m.
00:24:12.400 --> 00:24:14.960
and working on this before because I still a private practice owner, guys.
00:24:15.039 --> 00:24:18.880
Like I still have a real client list that I go and I work and I do all of that, right?
00:24:19.039 --> 00:24:24.000
Um, I know how much money and time and sweat and I understand what it's like to build a business.
00:24:24.160 --> 00:24:33.920
But my favorite thing I'm gonna give you a shout out if you don't mind, is you're like me, which is you said, I want to talk to you, not oh my gosh, you're doing something similar to me.
00:24:34.000 --> 00:24:35.519
Don't step on my toes.
00:24:35.759 --> 00:24:38.799
Like and I don't, I don't, this isn't a race.
00:24:38.880 --> 00:24:39.680
I don't care who wins.
00:24:39.759 --> 00:24:40.480
I hope we all win.
00:24:40.640 --> 00:24:52.720
I hope the industry like becomes stronger and better and more powerful because we come together and I understand that someone who's listening to this might worry that they are doing something niche.
00:24:52.880 --> 00:24:55.440
And I say, I don't care, come talk to me.
00:24:55.519 --> 00:24:56.319
I'll talk to you.
00:24:56.559 --> 00:25:07.359
I find the people who really don't want to talk to me though are the ones who are making money off of the unhealthy systems and who, you know, and and those are the people that you're right, we don't have anything in common.
00:25:08.240 --> 00:25:08.880
You're right.
00:25:09.039 --> 00:25:09.519
You're right.
00:25:09.599 --> 00:25:14.000
Don't don't contact me because I'm not gonna promote you if I know who you're getting paid by.
00:25:14.079 --> 00:25:14.559
I'm sorry.
00:25:14.720 --> 00:25:23.279
And you and instead, I think I think if TRI won't work with you, then maybe you should sit down with your mirror and your your ethics that you had to sign to.
00:25:23.440 --> 00:25:27.519
And I think it's time for you to have a real sorry, I know Easter is like Jesus.
00:25:27.759 --> 00:25:28.640
You're coming to Jesus, it's time.
00:25:28.720 --> 00:25:29.839
I think you were going there.
00:25:31.039 --> 00:25:31.599
I'm a Jew.
00:25:31.680 --> 00:25:33.920
I'm an atheist Buddhist Jew, so I can say that.
00:25:34.480 --> 00:25:38.240
Yeah, but like if if I won't work with you, that's don't get mad at me.
00:25:38.319 --> 00:25:40.640
If I'm writing, by the way, I've had lots of people reach out to me.
00:25:40.720 --> 00:25:46.079
They're assuming, they're always assuming I'm talking about their company, which is hilarious because I don't name companies.
00:25:46.319 --> 00:25:57.519
But if you think that what I've wrote about is so close to what you're working in, then you need to think about where you're working and what you're promoting and what you're making money on.
00:25:57.680 --> 00:26:02.480
Don't write me and say, you know, we should have a private conversation because I can tell you I'm like, I can tell you you've got this wrong.
00:26:02.640 --> 00:26:03.359
No, no, no.
00:26:03.519 --> 00:26:07.440
If you think this was your company, then chances are I'm not the one that has something wrong.
00:26:07.759 --> 00:26:12.799
I think that going back to the fact that I I don't see you as competition.
00:26:12.960 --> 00:26:16.400
I hope you're incredibly successful in what you're doing.
00:26:16.640 --> 00:26:43.359
But I think it also just it's I think that is also happening across the field with scarcity, this very scarcity mindset where, and I think that's part of the push with like these venture-backed platforms of they've now created this system where people are so scared about getting referrals that then they and the reason that referrals are down is because of the platforms, but then they feel obligated to join the platforms because they can't get referrals.
00:26:43.440 --> 00:26:48.559
And then I hear people joining the platforms thinking they're gonna get referrals, and then they're not getting referrals from the platform.
00:26:48.799 --> 00:26:51.119
Oh, but you end up in like four or five of them.
00:26:51.279 --> 00:26:54.240
So now you're paying fees to four or five companies.
00:26:54.480 --> 00:26:54.960
Mm-hmm.
00:26:55.279 --> 00:26:55.759
Yeah.
00:26:56.079 --> 00:27:01.680
And, you know, I've coined this term therapist farm, is it cheapens the work we do.
00:27:02.160 --> 00:27:05.759
It gets in the middle of the relationship with the client.
00:27:06.079 --> 00:27:13.519
Because if, you know, I mean, I've heard stories about people's psychology today profiles, for instance, being managed by one of these companies.
00:27:13.680 --> 00:27:26.640
And so people that are reaching out for that therapist are being funneled into one line where then they're handed out to whoever they want to give them to, not even the person that they initially contacted, right?
00:27:26.799 --> 00:27:27.039
That's right.
00:27:27.119 --> 00:27:27.359
That's right.
00:27:27.519 --> 00:27:30.559
So it's like they're not thinking about the zombie, the zombie profiles.
00:27:30.880 --> 00:27:33.759
Is that like are those like ghost networky type things?
00:27:33.839 --> 00:27:34.880
What is a zombie profile?
00:27:35.039 --> 00:27:40.079
So a zombie profile is let's say that you signed up with one of these companies and now you leave it.
00:27:40.240 --> 00:27:41.839
They keep your profile up there.
00:27:42.079 --> 00:27:45.519
So you might be competing against yourself in your own zip code.
00:27:45.839 --> 00:27:46.799
That's crazy.
00:27:47.039 --> 00:27:48.559
Because they own your profile.
00:27:48.799 --> 00:27:49.440
That's crazy.
00:27:49.599 --> 00:27:52.319
And it reminds, I don't know if you I don't know how if how many episodes you've listened to.
00:27:52.400 --> 00:28:00.480
I know you listened to the first one, but I interviewed Kim Kabar, who's a uh LMFT, and she has got she was a journalist for many years.
00:28:00.640 --> 00:28:07.200
And I don't know if you heard her story around her psychology today profile got hacked by Grow Therapy.
00:28:07.440 --> 00:28:09.200
She, well, she had, what was it?
00:28:09.359 --> 00:28:10.960
She wasn't getting any referrals.
00:28:11.039 --> 00:28:15.200
She was already with Headway, already with Alma, desperate for referrals, right?
00:28:15.759 --> 00:28:22.480
And so she deactivated, um, she had two different psychology today accounts for different licenses in different states or something.
00:28:22.640 --> 00:28:26.799
Then she deactivated them and then had the idea of like, I'm gonna create a new profile, right?
00:28:26.960 --> 00:28:28.640
Trying to get in front of the algorithm.
00:28:28.880 --> 00:28:35.359
She went in to record her little video thing, accidentally logged into one of her deactivated profiles.
00:28:35.759 --> 00:28:40.400
And all of a sudden, she looked at it and it said, This profile is managed by Grow Therapy.
00:28:40.559 --> 00:28:40.960
Oh my gosh.
00:28:41.200 --> 00:28:43.759
And the email was changed and the phone number was changed.
00:28:43.920 --> 00:28:45.440
She didn't even work for Grow.
00:28:45.680 --> 00:28:50.079
She had interviewed with them, but she didn't even work for them.
00:28:50.160 --> 00:28:51.519
And that started her down.
00:28:51.680 --> 00:28:54.400
You want to talk to someone, she's a good person for you to connect with as well.
00:28:54.640 --> 00:28:56.799
Well, that's similar to what happened to me with the Seven Cups.
00:28:56.880 --> 00:28:58.960
So um Oh, seven cups, yes.
00:28:59.200 --> 00:29:00.480
Let's talk about seven cups for a second.
00:29:00.720 --> 00:29:01.279
Seven cups, yeah.
00:29:01.519 --> 00:29:03.839
Sadly, because this is owned by a mental health person.
00:29:04.000 --> 00:29:22.559
So Seven Cups went and just, from what I understand, I'm not there, but literally took profiles off of other directories, put them onto their company so that if somebody was referred to and they searched for me, I was coming up on a platform that I didn't pay for, I didn't work for, and I did not get any referrals through.
00:29:22.720 --> 00:29:27.680
And somewhere on it, it had very small writing, like that this person may not work.
00:29:27.759 --> 00:29:30.000
And by the way, it wasn't even mental health people.
00:29:30.079 --> 00:29:31.680
It was like volunteer.
00:29:32.079 --> 00:29:34.720
It wasn't even it wasn't remember what they called them.
00:29:34.799 --> 00:29:37.680
It was uh, and you didn't even have to have a license or anything.
00:29:37.839 --> 00:29:40.000
They were just like friends to talk to, kind of thing.
00:29:40.079 --> 00:29:41.759
I don't know what they called it, but I know what you're talking about.
00:29:42.000 --> 00:29:44.880
Which is which is, by the way, I mean, talk about legal liability.
00:29:44.960 --> 00:29:46.000
Like some of that is.
00:29:46.160 --> 00:29:52.079
I I don't even, I don't even I don't I I wouldn't spend a day without my insurance, I wouldn't spend a day without my lawyers.
00:29:52.240 --> 00:29:57.359
There's no way I'm doing something that's gonna put me out there like that, where someone might call, let's say they're suicidal.
00:29:57.440 --> 00:30:05.039
Now they're talking to some volunteer, not even a licensed mental health provider, and you and you, and that profile isn't even like the one that you got paid for.
00:30:05.359 --> 00:30:07.279
I don't even I don't even know.
00:30:07.519 --> 00:30:14.000
But I mean but I mean I think overall what you're talking about is we've completely lost control over the narrative of our field.
00:30:14.319 --> 00:30:14.559
100%.
00:30:15.039 --> 00:30:22.319
We've completely lost like our it's like how did all of these people outside come in and take over like this?
00:30:22.640 --> 00:30:26.480
Like we're at the mercy of the uh of all these this money and people.
00:30:28.079 --> 00:30:33.839
So the other part of this is, and and I might have told you this, so I apologize for being repetitive, but so here's what happened.
00:30:33.920 --> 00:30:38.000
When I found out I was on Seven Cups, in case you guys haven't noticed, I'm not shy.
00:30:38.160 --> 00:30:42.400
So I went to Seven Cups and I and I wrote them, I need you to take it down.
00:30:42.480 --> 00:30:44.079
They said, No problem, they didn't take it down.
00:30:44.240 --> 00:30:45.599
I wrote them again, they didn't take it down.
00:30:45.759 --> 00:30:58.400
So then I wrote my licensing board, I wrote NASW, I wrote the state's attorney general for where the company was located, and I wrote the Better Business Bureau.
00:30:58.480 --> 00:30:59.680
And do you know what they did?
00:31:00.160 --> 00:31:07.519
Nothing, not one thing, nobody from any of these organizations came back and said, Hey, you're right, this is terrible.
00:31:07.599 --> 00:31:09.279
Do you know how I ended up getting my profile down?
00:31:09.920 --> 00:31:13.359
I said that I'm a SAG AFTRA member and you don't have a right to own my thing.
00:31:13.440 --> 00:31:15.599
I own my own identity, and then it came down.
00:31:16.079 --> 00:31:16.880
That's crazy.
00:31:17.119 --> 00:31:24.960
Which is, by the way, so that's the other thing that led me to TRI because nobody that was supposed to protect me did.
00:31:25.279 --> 00:31:28.160
Nobody that was supposed to at least have a conversation with me.
00:31:28.319 --> 00:31:31.920
Not one of these places called me and had a conversation with me about this.
00:31:32.319 --> 00:31:34.319
Not one, and I know there's a movement now.
00:31:34.480 --> 00:31:36.079
I mean, this is years later now.
00:31:36.240 --> 00:31:38.000
Like this is this is year, oh great.
00:31:38.079 --> 00:31:41.119
I'm so glad there's a move, like, and and I say this all the time.
00:31:41.279 --> 00:31:46.720
So help me if I'm asked to sign another freaking petition after the fact of someone hurting a therapist.
00:31:46.960 --> 00:31:47.839
So help me.
00:31:47.920 --> 00:31:49.440
Why can we not be proactive?
00:31:49.599 --> 00:31:52.799
We keep talking to our clients about not getting ourselves in situations.
00:31:52.880 --> 00:31:55.279
I don't understand why a field, why we haven't figured this out.
00:31:55.440 --> 00:32:00.079
I don't understand as a field why we have not talked about good faith estimates before they were in front of us.
00:32:00.240 --> 00:32:05.359
I don't understand as a field why we're paying for CPT codes that we're forced to use with insurance companies.
00:32:05.440 --> 00:32:08.400
Like, I don't understand why everything in our field is so reactive.
00:32:08.559 --> 00:32:17.599
The goal of TRI is to give you the day-to-day support, but the bigger goal is to have lobbyists and have a bigger voice before things happen to us, not after.
00:32:17.920 --> 00:32:36.160
I think you're bringing up such a great question, which is like, how did we get to this place where it's a free-for-all and where everything is out of jurisdiction or scope of practice, and that nobody, like our professional associations at that level, nobody's touching this.
00:32:36.480 --> 00:32:56.720
And I think part of it, one of the issues I see in this is, and I sit on a new board for the Mental Health Professionals Equity Alliance, is the silos of licenses, where to me it's indicative of like how people in this country operate anyway, which is instead of looking at like the big systems that are oppressing us, we fight amongst ourselves instead.
00:32:56.960 --> 00:32:58.960
And I feel like that's what's happened in the field.
00:32:59.119 --> 00:33:14.240
And I see that shifting, like when I interviewed the Wamka executive director, where she was like, we're building a coalition now with clinical social workers, with marriage and family therapists, with psychologists, so that we have a stronger lobbying base in the state of Washington.
00:33:14.400 --> 00:33:21.519
I think part of the reason of starting MHPEA was because it's like we don't have a national association for all disciplines.
00:33:21.599 --> 00:33:23.359
And we're all fighting for the same thing.
00:33:23.599 --> 00:33:29.839
We all work in similar contexts, or we were colleagues with each other, or we're doing identical work.
00:33:30.000 --> 00:33:34.720
We just have a different training focus coming into the work or whatever.
00:33:34.960 --> 00:33:51.440
But it's these silos that I think has really prevented national outrage and coming together because we feel beholden to these like professional identities, like I'm a licensed mental health counselor, I'm a clinical social worker, I'm a marriage and family therapist, I'm a psychologist.
00:33:51.599 --> 00:33:52.880
It's like fine.
00:33:53.200 --> 00:33:55.119
And we don't work in silos.
00:33:55.279 --> 00:33:56.799
We all work together in a lot of ways.
00:33:57.119 --> 00:33:57.440
That's right.
00:33:57.599 --> 00:34:05.359
So I think that it's in trying to preserve professional identity, we've kind of gotten fucked because it's preventing us from being.
00:34:05.519 --> 00:34:08.719
I mean, how much of the workforce, how many therapists are there in this country?
00:34:08.800 --> 00:34:10.639
There's a lot of us with different licenses.
00:34:10.880 --> 00:34:11.760
I can tell you, are you ready?
00:34:11.920 --> 00:34:12.800
Oh, good, good, good.
00:34:12.880 --> 00:34:13.519
What how many?
00:34:13.679 --> 00:34:13.920
Okay.
00:34:14.079 --> 00:34:15.199
You're gonna fall over.
00:34:15.360 --> 00:34:22.079
There is 1.27 million of us if you go from master's level students up to newly retired.
00:34:22.239 --> 00:34:24.480
1.2 million, and somehow we have not figured out.
00:34:24.559 --> 00:34:27.679
I mean, I think our largest association is a couple hundred thousand.
00:34:27.920 --> 00:34:30.239
So that's a pro and that's only one, right?
00:34:30.320 --> 00:34:32.960
And they're all fragmented and siloed.
00:34:33.119 --> 00:34:35.760
So one person asked me a question, and I and I'd like to address it.
00:34:35.840 --> 00:34:39.280
They said, I think we need an association that goes across all of this.
00:34:39.360 --> 00:34:43.039
And and you just mentioned association, and I have two things that I want to say that.
00:34:43.199 --> 00:34:46.719
And the first one is there's a lot of bureaucracy in an association.
00:34:46.880 --> 00:34:48.400
I do understand that part of associations.
00:34:48.480 --> 00:34:50.639
There's a lot, there's a board, your board changes all the time.
00:34:50.800 --> 00:34:52.800
Like you, you, you, you have very different roles.
00:34:53.199 --> 00:34:59.199
But the second part is, how can I possibly ask people to join something that you, if you feel that the ones that we have have not been answering the call?
00:34:59.360 --> 00:35:05.519
I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna like do another one, like, I'll leave your association, and I don't want to compete with associations.
00:35:05.760 --> 00:35:07.440
TRI wants to be the bridge.
00:35:07.599 --> 00:35:09.360
We want to sit at the table with you.
00:35:09.679 --> 00:35:11.679
But I don't want your bureaucracy.
00:35:11.840 --> 00:35:14.320
I want if I have a lobbyist, I want them to go and fight for something.
00:35:14.400 --> 00:35:19.519
If 50 people in TRI say this is bothering me, I want a lobbyist to go figure that out that day.
00:35:19.679 --> 00:35:24.719
I don't want to wait until we have a board meeting and the board proves something and then you know I'm the same way.
00:35:24.800 --> 00:35:26.320
I'm very just don't operate like that.
00:35:26.400 --> 00:35:27.599
I'm just like, let's just do it.
00:35:27.760 --> 00:35:28.400
Let's just do it.
00:35:28.559 --> 00:35:30.639
Tell me afterwards we can't, but let's try.
00:35:31.280 --> 00:35:31.519
Right?
00:35:31.599 --> 00:35:35.679
And then tell me, and then tell me how we can, because you know I'm already everything that I've mentioned on this show.
00:35:35.840 --> 00:35:39.920
I already have a legal idea of how we can go around it, how we can figure it out.
00:35:40.239 --> 00:35:40.719
I love it.
00:35:41.119 --> 00:35:43.039
And I just need the lawyers who do it.
00:35:43.360 --> 00:35:44.320
Well, and that's the thing.
00:35:44.480 --> 00:35:51.760
That's where it's that coalition building, and it's that networking and it's that connecting, and it's getting people that are as passionate as you are.
00:35:51.920 --> 00:35:57.199
It's also about educating folks on what's going on, which is like the big big focus of this podcast.
00:35:57.360 --> 00:36:02.719
Is there's so many people that don't understand why so many of us are pushing back.
00:36:02.880 --> 00:36:05.280
You know, I see it where it's like, I need to make a living.
00:36:05.360 --> 00:36:06.320
And I'm like, I get that.
00:36:06.480 --> 00:36:08.320
I totally am not gonna disparage you.
00:36:08.480 --> 00:36:11.519
I would not disparage anybody for being on headway.
00:36:11.840 --> 00:36:12.719
Like to get started.
00:36:12.800 --> 00:36:26.239
I I understand it, but I also think it's important that you have the information so that you you know what you're signing up for and that you're honest with yourself about the long-term implications of that choice for the whole field.
00:36:26.480 --> 00:36:37.280
It may be a seem like a short-term solution right now, but the long-term impact could mean that, yeah, you're making pretty good money now, but you may not have a job in a few years because of it.
00:36:37.679 --> 00:36:39.119
That's exactly right.
00:36:39.360 --> 00:36:44.400
That's exactly and well, and here's the other part that I always like to remind therapists, and this is very true.
00:36:44.880 --> 00:36:49.679
There's a reason that they offer so much money for you to bring your friends in in recruiting.
00:36:50.239 --> 00:36:53.599
There's a reason, and that's because of how much money they make off of us.
00:36:55.119 --> 00:36:56.239
Like, just think about that.
00:36:57.360 --> 00:37:01.920
They're offering hundreds and hundreds of dollars for you to recruit another therapist.
00:37:02.239 --> 00:37:09.599
I see more ads at conferences in magazines, in and that, and I know those therapists are getting more and more and more recruitment offers.
00:37:09.679 --> 00:37:13.440
Like, bring your friend, I'll give you$300,$400,$500, right?
00:37:13.679 --> 00:37:16.960
Why aren't they spending that money getting these people clients?
00:37:17.280 --> 00:37:24.800
That's a big question mark that you should, again, before you get involved in these, or if you're already involved in these, you should be asking this.
00:37:25.039 --> 00:37:34.559
Why am I getting more emails or solicitations to bring a friend in and offered more money than you then I'm seeing commercials on TV to get me clients?
00:37:34.880 --> 00:37:37.519
It feels like a pyramid scheme when you talk about it like that.
00:37:37.920 --> 00:37:40.480
It certainly does feel like that, doesn't it?
00:37:40.960 --> 00:37:43.119
The Lou LaRoe of mental health.
00:37:43.360 --> 00:37:53.119
And I also wonder what is the endgame in dumping all of this money into a field that is notoriously underpaid to begin with.
00:37:53.360 --> 00:37:56.159
And what are these investors planning to get out of it?
00:37:56.400 --> 00:37:59.519
Because I have to look at ROI on this.
00:37:59.840 --> 00:38:04.079
Mental health doesn't feel like a field with a really high ROI.
00:38:04.239 --> 00:38:07.119
So that's what goes back to what you were talking about earlier.
00:38:07.440 --> 00:38:08.960
There's something else going on here.
00:38:09.199 --> 00:38:10.639
Well, there's two things the data.
00:38:10.800 --> 00:38:18.159
The data is my big thing that I think is fueling a lot of this, that there's money to be made elsewhere from client data.
00:38:18.400 --> 00:38:19.679
But that's my theory.
00:38:20.000 --> 00:38:21.039
Well, yes.
00:38:21.280 --> 00:38:24.000
So, so right, I think that that's a very decent theory.
00:38:24.159 --> 00:38:26.079
I think there is actually a lot of money in mental health.
00:38:26.159 --> 00:38:27.360
It just doesn't come down to us.
00:38:29.119 --> 00:38:29.440
Okay.
00:38:29.679 --> 00:38:31.360
I think there's a ton of money in mental health.
00:38:31.440 --> 00:38:41.760
But again, when they when companies are nickel and diming us and taking back$125 because they don't think that this happened the way, you know, there wasn't enough medical necessity.
00:38:41.920 --> 00:38:44.400
Which by the way, I don't even understand medical necessity.
00:38:44.559 --> 00:38:48.079
I think if a person comes into your room and they say, I need help, that's medical necessity.
00:38:48.159 --> 00:38:52.320
Like it do you know that there is no true definition of what medical necessity is?
00:38:52.800 --> 00:38:52.960
Of course.
00:38:53.199 --> 00:38:53.440
There isn't.
00:38:53.599 --> 00:38:54.800
There isn't there's none.
00:38:55.119 --> 00:38:55.840
There's none, it doesn't exist.
00:38:56.480 --> 00:38:58.079
At any time, at any moment.
00:38:59.199 --> 00:38:59.599
Right?
00:38:59.840 --> 00:39:02.639
Well, and and we're gonna jump onto my other soapbox.
00:39:02.719 --> 00:39:02.960
Are you ready?
00:39:03.599 --> 00:39:04.239
I love it, but bring it.
00:39:04.400 --> 00:39:05.039
Bring your soapbox.
00:39:05.280 --> 00:39:14.000
Okay, the other soapbox that I have is not only is there not a true definition of medical necessity, and it's and it gets and it's arbitrary because the companies then get to decide things.
00:39:14.239 --> 00:39:20.719
I think the entire system is quite interestingly anti-getting help on purpose.
00:39:21.280 --> 00:39:21.840
Tell me more.
00:39:22.239 --> 00:39:28.239
I think that there's a lot that gets done to people when they are in a state of fragility.
00:39:28.960 --> 00:39:36.079
And I just wonder sometimes why we're not proactive in our mental health system, why we're not proactive in our healthcare system at all.
00:39:36.320 --> 00:39:39.760
Everything about the American system is very reactive, right?
00:39:39.920 --> 00:39:51.519
I mean, you have to like you have to pull teeth in order to get an exam, even if like 15 members of your family had a certain type of heart disease, you have to pull teeth to get approved to have that as an exam.
00:39:51.760 --> 00:39:55.119
Well, and then who are the people with big lobbyists?
00:39:55.280 --> 00:39:58.159
It's the companies that make money off of us being sick.
00:39:58.320 --> 00:40:10.000
So if we talk about less people getting outpatient treatment and more people getting inpatient treatment or or may, oh my gosh, these school shootings, what are we possibly gonna do about it?
00:40:10.079 --> 00:40:11.840
I don't understand why kids have more anxiety.
00:40:11.920 --> 00:40:21.039
I mean, if I see one more person say, I think kids have more anxiety because of social whatever, and they're not also talking about the fact that they've been having active shooter drills since they were in kindergarten.
00:40:21.280 --> 00:40:24.159
We know that there's things that are making the population more anxious.
00:40:24.239 --> 00:40:26.400
We know that there's things that are increasing the suicide rates.
00:40:26.559 --> 00:40:33.199
We know that there's things, and yet we go, oh my gosh, somebody came into your room and I don't know, you were working with them for a whole year.
00:40:33.360 --> 00:40:34.559
I think that you're like milking this.
00:40:34.960 --> 00:40:35.920
Are you kidding me?
00:40:36.159 --> 00:40:39.440
So I think maybe there's a lot of money in keeping people sick.
00:40:39.760 --> 00:40:47.280
Well, and then it fuels better help and talk space, where you can make money off of all of that with.
00:40:47.360 --> 00:40:50.000
I mean, talk about data breaches and poor behavior.
00:40:50.159 --> 00:40:54.639
Like BetterHelp, I think is like the Mac Daddy of that kind of stuff.
00:40:54.960 --> 00:40:58.960
But what it does, and now I'm thinking about this, I'm a verbal processor.
00:40:59.119 --> 00:40:59.280
Yeah.
00:40:59.760 --> 00:41:04.159
But then I see now there are more mental health apps.
00:41:04.320 --> 00:41:10.320
So now there's like they're they're removing this sort of we we have liability when when we provide services.
00:41:10.559 --> 00:41:14.559
But now it just feels like, okay, everybody feels like shit and it is fucked up.
00:41:14.639 --> 00:41:16.960
So everyone's getting on the bandwagon.
00:41:17.039 --> 00:41:22.719
I saw some app, I wish I could remember what it was called, but it was like adjacent to EMDR.
00:41:22.800 --> 00:41:26.719
They were like, this isn't EMDR, but it kind of is like EMDR.
00:41:26.880 --> 00:41:30.559
And you can download an app and in 15 minutes you can do this stuff on yourself.
00:41:30.639 --> 00:41:34.000
And you don't need it, literally was like, you don't need to go to see a therapist anymore.
00:41:34.239 --> 00:41:34.800
Right.
00:41:35.360 --> 00:41:37.599
And I'm like, what the hell is going on?
00:41:37.760 --> 00:41:43.199
So it's like people are there's a obviously an awareness that mental health people are struggling with their mental health.
00:41:43.280 --> 00:41:43.599
Yeah.
00:41:43.760 --> 00:41:52.159
But now it's just a money-making thing where people can get away with doing this stuff where there's no liability, where it's just selling you something.
00:41:52.320 --> 00:41:59.920
And when it comes down to it, what we all know is the core of therapy is the human-to-human relationship.
00:42:00.159 --> 00:42:00.559
Of course.
00:42:00.719 --> 00:42:04.079
And in all of this, where is that now?
00:42:04.559 --> 00:42:10.559
I mean, I see these newer clinicians, and everybody is so afraid of not having enough clients.
00:42:10.800 --> 00:42:12.639
People are financially strapped.
00:42:12.800 --> 00:42:14.079
We don't get paid enough.
00:42:14.239 --> 00:42:33.039
And so the whole focus of the field becomes so, and I get that we need to make money, but it starts to really feel like it's operating from that place and not like why we all got into this, because they're putting us in this scare place of scarcity where we're forgetting about why we're therapists to begin with.
00:42:33.599 --> 00:42:41.199
And it starts to be about surviving us trying to survive so that we can help and sit with other people.
00:42:41.360 --> 00:42:42.639
And it's just become a commodity.
00:42:42.719 --> 00:42:44.559
I get maybe that's just like the overarching thing.
00:42:44.719 --> 00:42:47.199
It feels like they're trying to turn this into a commodity just a commodity.
00:42:47.440 --> 00:42:48.000
Well, hold on.
00:42:48.079 --> 00:42:50.639
And I'm and I'll challenge you because bring it, bring it.
00:42:50.800 --> 00:42:51.519
Okay, ready?
00:42:51.679 --> 00:42:53.679
Because I actually think that we're very underpaid.
00:42:53.760 --> 00:42:58.000
And when they start making us think that we're asking for too much, uh and I agree.
00:42:58.079 --> 00:43:00.800
I I think I think there's another hidden agenda.
00:43:01.119 --> 00:43:04.719
When you think, like, oh my gosh, you should be a martyr, you should love what you're doing.
00:43:04.800 --> 00:43:06.480
This is what you should do it because you love it.
00:43:06.639 --> 00:43:09.760
I think that we're buying into their game, and I don't want to buy into their game.
00:43:09.920 --> 00:43:26.639
I consider us when you think of, I think, I believe somebody out there can um write me if I'm wrong, but I think it's nurse practitioners that we have the exact amount of time in school, time before licensing, and we have even more steps than them about hours and then the licensing exam.
00:43:26.800 --> 00:43:32.800
And I think it's we have more steps than them, and they make on average$50,000 more a year than us, even when they're starting.
00:43:32.960 --> 00:43:34.159
Well, and think about that.
00:43:34.239 --> 00:43:34.880
Think about that.
00:43:35.039 --> 00:43:42.079
What we are saying in that moment, that somehow that they are doing something different to than we are, and that our job is less.
00:43:42.239 --> 00:43:52.719
I also think because our income has been so slowly moving, like instead of largely moving like other industries, I think that ours is going down.
00:43:52.880 --> 00:43:57.360
I feel like I I I feel like well, I feel like that's gonna be the next point data point.
00:43:57.440 --> 00:44:01.679
Like all these people that have gone into these platform companies, when They start really reporting how much they're making.
00:44:01.760 --> 00:44:05.599
Like when we have a lot of data on this, you're going to see, right, that ours probably went down.
00:44:05.679 --> 00:44:06.239
I agree with you.
00:44:06.400 --> 00:44:09.199
And again, definitely compared to what the cost of living is, right?
00:44:09.280 --> 00:44:12.000
The call, we're nowhere near making what we need to for the cola.
00:44:12.320 --> 00:44:21.760
Well, I also want to say that I I'm not disagreeing with the fact that we need to make money and that our time is valuable and we should be making more money.
00:44:22.000 --> 00:44:26.639
What I'm saying is that because they've created this scarcity.
00:44:26.960 --> 00:44:27.679
Oh, yeah.
00:44:28.000 --> 00:44:36.639
It has created, they've put us in a place where we have to be so concerned about money that I think it's harming the field.
00:44:36.880 --> 00:44:37.280
Yes.
00:44:37.440 --> 00:44:43.840
Because okay, so now, yes, now we're definitely on the same page because I'm I'm I really do believe that we need to make more from the beginning.
00:44:43.920 --> 00:44:48.880
I think that's the other reason these platforms seem really uh great to somebody just coming out of school.
00:44:49.039 --> 00:44:50.000
I mean, I've I've done it, right?
00:44:50.079 --> 00:44:59.440
I've worked in the mental health, I've worked with severe mental illness, I've worked with people who are, I say this, everyone knows what I mean in the field, that are that can be intimidating to a new clinician.
00:44:59.679 --> 00:45:06.800
And so if somebody came to me when I first came out of school and said, hey, you can stay in your pajamas and just open your laptop and I'm gonna pay you for this, sure.
00:45:07.360 --> 00:45:08.800
I totally get that.
00:45:08.960 --> 00:45:12.880
I totally understand why I like again, I'm not against the therapist, I get that.
00:45:13.039 --> 00:45:17.920
But what I always say when I talk to new clinicians is you don't know what you don't know.
00:45:18.159 --> 00:45:22.400
Like I would never in a million years give back that time in the community mental health.
00:45:22.480 --> 00:45:24.400
I would never give back my time in the hospitals.
00:45:24.480 --> 00:45:28.320
I would never give back that time because you are surrounded by a staff that understands.
00:45:28.400 --> 00:45:29.840
You learn from people in the moment.
00:45:30.000 --> 00:45:31.440
There's nothing that you're afraid of.
00:45:31.519 --> 00:45:50.000
And if you think that private practice means you don't get people with severe mental illness who have psychotic breaks, who who tell you something that they're in harm, that I've done, you know, CPS reports, obviously, in private practice, or an adult whose spouse is stealing their money or beating them up, or, you know, and and not in poor neighborhoods, like this is anywhere.
00:45:50.079 --> 00:45:52.559
This can be any, you do not fall for the working well.
00:45:52.960 --> 00:46:03.440
The working well is gonna sit on your couch or across your Zoom lens, and they are gonna tell you someone is hurting them, they are having psychotic ideals, they are suicidal.
00:46:03.679 --> 00:46:10.960
I would not replace my time of working with teams because every single time that happened in my office, I completely knew what to do next.
00:46:11.119 --> 00:46:14.480
I am very proud that everyone has stayed safe in my practice.
00:46:14.719 --> 00:46:21.760
So, and I think, you know, your training as an LICSW is more systems focused than like a counseling degree.
00:46:22.000 --> 00:46:33.119
Hearing what you're saying, it's making me think about, you know, I got my start mostly, I worked with SMI initially in a like an independent living residential kind of setting and did more case management work.
00:46:33.280 --> 00:46:41.280
And then I did school-based mental health in wildly different communities from the south side of Chicago to a very wealthy suburb of Seattle.
00:46:41.440 --> 00:46:43.360
So, like polar opposites.
00:46:43.840 --> 00:47:00.159
What it instilled in me, because I got my start in Chicago, I always say I was raised by social workers, was understanding the systems that people are in and being in those systems, because I feel like now that I'm a group practice owner with newer clinicians, I hire associates.
00:47:00.400 --> 00:47:09.440
I have to sort of through my own experience help them understand the larger systems at play because they went right into a group practice setting.
00:47:09.679 --> 00:47:16.320
They haven't necessarily had that being within a system, whether it's community mental health or a school or a hospital, whatever, right?
00:47:16.400 --> 00:47:22.000
All these different systems to really understand the impacts of those things on clients.
00:47:22.400 --> 00:47:33.920
And even with like referrals or all of that stuff, I feel like there's a it does a disservice to our ability to fully serve the entire community.
00:47:34.079 --> 00:47:36.320
I also think people over-specialize too quickly.
00:47:36.400 --> 00:47:38.639
But that's another conversation.
00:47:40.159 --> 00:47:43.039
And that's that's something that I know everyone thinks that they have to have a niche.
00:47:43.119 --> 00:47:43.760
I don't think you do.
00:47:43.840 --> 00:47:48.559
I think you have to have things you're interested in and you could take it from there because you'll you'll learn things over time.
00:47:48.719 --> 00:47:50.800
The work of the people are being pushed.
00:47:51.119 --> 00:47:52.559
People are being pushed to niche now.
00:47:52.639 --> 00:47:54.079
And I'm like, am I just old?
00:47:54.159 --> 00:47:55.519
Like, am I aging out of this?
00:47:55.679 --> 00:47:57.599
Because this is not how I was trained.
00:47:58.000 --> 00:47:59.519
I'm a proud generalist.
00:47:59.679 --> 00:48:03.119
I'm proud to be a generalist because it opens up my referral base.
00:48:03.360 --> 00:48:06.320
I feel like you put anybody in front of me and I can figure something out.
00:48:06.400 --> 00:48:07.119
I can work with them.
00:48:07.280 --> 00:48:08.639
I can figure out how to work with them.
00:48:08.880 --> 00:48:10.800
And so I think we're overly niching.
00:48:10.960 --> 00:48:12.960
Everything feels like it's like narrowing.
00:48:13.199 --> 00:48:13.519
Yes.
00:48:13.679 --> 00:48:16.320
And it's what we not need or what we need the least.
00:48:16.400 --> 00:48:17.519
Sorry, that wasn't great grammar.
00:48:17.599 --> 00:48:20.000
But that's what we need the least, you know.
00:48:20.159 --> 00:48:23.119
I don't know if you guys have read my newsletters, but I say I write the way I talk.
00:48:23.199 --> 00:48:25.599
So if the sentences, you know, make no sense.
00:48:25.760 --> 00:48:26.239
There you go.
00:48:26.400 --> 00:48:27.920
Now you know why they sound like that.
00:48:28.159 --> 00:48:31.039
But yes, I think these are you're making really great points.
00:48:31.280 --> 00:48:35.599
And I love that you were starting conversations on them.
00:48:35.840 --> 00:48:41.519
I think the other part of TRI is that there's so many of these conversations that we're not having.
00:48:41.679 --> 00:48:44.719
Like, right what you and I just said, what you just said, I love what you just said.
00:48:44.800 --> 00:48:45.760
I want to give you full credit.
00:48:45.840 --> 00:48:47.440
Also, by the way, I love therapist farms.
00:48:47.519 --> 00:48:48.960
I think like we should all use that term.
00:48:49.920 --> 00:48:51.440
We're gonna we're gonna make it go viral.
00:48:51.599 --> 00:48:53.840
Let's make it go viral because that is what these are, right?
00:48:53.920 --> 00:48:55.119
These are therapist farms.
00:48:55.199 --> 00:49:06.800
And I worry that people are gonna leave this field in those therapist farms or in private practice or what out in the field because they've niche, because these platforms are not doing what they promised, and they're gonna think they're bad at this.
00:49:06.960 --> 00:49:11.599
And it's gonna have nothing to do with the quality of work that they could have done as a therapist.
00:49:11.760 --> 00:49:15.760
It's going to be that they started from a negative space.
00:49:16.239 --> 00:49:28.719
They're all of these things that we talked about, they're not getting the support, they're not getting the help, they're not getting the training, and they are gonna walk and they're and I am so worried for the profession that people are gonna think they're not good at something, and I know they can be.
00:49:28.880 --> 00:49:34.079
If if you got through school, then there's something about this that you are good at or that you would be good at.
00:49:34.159 --> 00:49:38.800
And if you are not feeling it because you're in a platform and you are not getting clients, then then it is not you.
00:49:39.360 --> 00:49:42.000
And so, and so And there's no community there either.
00:49:42.159 --> 00:49:43.920
There's no culture community cons.
00:49:44.320 --> 00:49:51.679
I mean, I'm sure some of them do consultation groups or whatever, but like uh you can't work in a vacuum, especially in your early years in the field.
00:49:51.920 --> 00:49:53.760
I just think it's a recipe for burnout.
00:49:54.079 --> 00:49:54.400
I agree.
00:49:54.559 --> 00:50:05.119
And burnout and just and and again, being with the wrong place, with the wrong type of clients, because that's the other thing I hear about these platforms, is they'll sign up for something and they they get things thrown at them that they don't feel competent in.
00:50:05.199 --> 00:50:07.440
Now, what you're saying, it's great to be a generalist.
00:50:07.519 --> 00:50:14.480
It's very different to work with something you don't feel confident in and to worry about that because that is it, you're gonna worry about seeing that client the night before.
00:50:14.639 --> 00:50:16.800
You're gonna worry every session, you're gonna feel intimidated.
00:50:16.880 --> 00:50:21.679
I remember the first time I worked with a really angry parent, you know, and that stuff is intimidating.
00:50:21.920 --> 00:50:22.719
I don't care now.
00:50:22.880 --> 00:50:28.079
Like now I know what I'm doing, but but you need people to talk about and talk with in those moments.
00:50:28.480 --> 00:50:37.280
And I hope that hearing this on this podcast and hopefully within the community of TRI lets you know you're not alone and you're not bad at it.
00:50:37.519 --> 00:50:39.440
You just don't have the right support.
00:50:39.679 --> 00:50:41.119
I a hundred percent agree.
00:50:41.360 --> 00:50:46.960
I always tell clinicians in my group practice, you will never have the level of support you have right now.
00:50:47.119 --> 00:50:52.079
Now is the time to explore clients that you feel a little incompetent with.
00:50:52.239 --> 00:50:53.920
And I feel like we're losing that.
00:50:54.079 --> 00:50:54.239
Yes.
00:50:54.559 --> 00:50:59.840
Because even a lot of group practice owners are opting for this 1099 model, which I personally don't like.
00:51:00.000 --> 00:51:02.400
I'm just gonna be honest, I'm judgy about that.
00:51:02.559 --> 00:51:06.719
I think that you're not really a group practice, you're a managed service organization.
00:51:06.800 --> 00:51:08.800
You're an MSO at that point, and you're not.
00:51:08.960 --> 00:51:09.760
That's my opinion.
00:51:09.920 --> 00:51:10.880
I'm just gonna say that.
00:51:11.119 --> 00:51:18.400
And we've I feel like the industry is losing this sense of we're a field that's always in training.
00:51:18.559 --> 00:51:21.119
I always tell people consultation never ends.
00:51:22.159 --> 00:51:28.639
Like you can't, you cannot get cocky in this field because you're gonna fuck someone's head up if you get too cocky.
00:51:29.280 --> 00:51:35.840
And I think that again, it goes back to that scarcity thing where it's become such like economically driven.
00:51:35.920 --> 00:51:38.320
And again, we need we should be paid a million dollars.
00:51:38.559 --> 00:51:39.119
Fine.
00:51:39.519 --> 00:51:56.480
But that scarcity, I think is we're losing our connection to the work itself and what it takes to have a sustainable career, which requires community collaboration, consultation, mentorship throughout your career.
00:51:56.639 --> 00:51:57.840
I think that's right.
00:51:57.920 --> 00:51:58.400
That's 100%.
00:51:58.880 --> 00:52:04.159
And these models, these current platforms, that the models that we're working under now just do not support it.
00:52:04.480 --> 00:52:10.880
Therapist forms is the best way to say this because you're you're not in a place where you're getting that hand holding that you absolutely deserve.
00:52:11.039 --> 00:52:12.079
There is nothing wrong.
00:52:12.320 --> 00:52:19.519
Dear clinicians, dear new clinicians, dear older clinicians, dear people who've been in the field for 40 years and people who've been in the field for four months.
00:52:19.760 --> 00:52:21.679
You sometimes need hand holding.
00:52:21.840 --> 00:52:29.840
You need support and you need structure and you need to understand what's happening and why it's happening, and you need a place where you can say, this makes me feel afraid.
00:52:29.920 --> 00:52:38.000
Now, I'm not gonna say every government agency or every hospital or every group practice is is the right place.
00:52:38.320 --> 00:52:38.639
Sure.
00:52:38.880 --> 00:52:40.400
But here's what they don't do.
00:52:40.639 --> 00:52:43.599
They don't also exploit your client data.
00:52:43.840 --> 00:52:50.320
Like, yeah, they also aren't in, you know, legal things because they're selling your client data.
00:52:50.480 --> 00:52:53.760
Like, I think these are this is like the conversations we need to have.
00:52:53.920 --> 00:52:56.320
And I still think that there's ways you could do both.
00:52:56.400 --> 00:53:05.599
I think that there's ways you could work at a community organization or, you know, um in a hospital part-time while you're like if your ultimate goal is to build that private practice, I get it.
00:53:05.760 --> 00:53:07.199
I totally get it, you know?
00:53:07.679 --> 00:53:15.920
But it doesn't mean that it has to be all or nothing, especially, and I want you to hear this if the all means that you're not in this business in three years.
00:53:16.239 --> 00:53:17.199
Exactly.
00:53:17.679 --> 00:53:22.639
That's where you have to say, okay, I might not want to work with that person who's, you know, has schizophrenia.
00:53:22.719 --> 00:53:26.239
That might, that person is smelly and scary and this, that, and the next thing.
00:53:26.400 --> 00:53:27.039
Go do it.
00:53:27.119 --> 00:53:28.000
Do it with a team.
00:53:28.159 --> 00:53:32.639
It doesn't mean you have to work with them forever, but at least know what the signs are, know what the symptoms are.
00:53:32.800 --> 00:53:35.920
Know what it really looks like when you're working with somebody who has one of these issues.
00:53:36.079 --> 00:53:38.159
Know what it's like when you work with a family who's in.
00:53:38.239 --> 00:53:41.280
I mean, I did in-home in motels, in motels.
00:53:41.440 --> 00:53:42.320
They did not have a home.
00:53:42.400 --> 00:53:44.159
I did in-home once in a car.
00:53:44.559 --> 00:53:45.920
They did not have a home.
00:53:46.239 --> 00:53:47.760
But you know what I'm not afraid of?
00:53:47.920 --> 00:53:55.840
I'm not afraid when somebody comes into me and says, Hey, I'm really worried about my family member because all of a sudden they're not sleeping.
00:53:56.000 --> 00:53:58.800
They've been awake for three days and they started talking to God.
00:53:58.880 --> 00:54:00.800
And like, I'm not afraid of that.
00:54:01.199 --> 00:54:02.559
And I can walk them through that.
00:54:02.639 --> 00:54:06.159
As I said before, all of these things will end up in your room.
00:54:06.400 --> 00:54:12.400
Do not think that private practice saves you from any of these conditions.
00:54:12.559 --> 00:54:22.800
You will get bipolar, you will get psychotic, you will get family members of them, you will get people who are poor, you will get people who live in motel, you will get all the you will get people that go through a divorce and now are living in a motel.
00:54:22.960 --> 00:54:25.280
And they will come to your system no matter where you are.
00:54:25.360 --> 00:54:27.760
And I hope you feel very competing in those things.
00:54:27.920 --> 00:54:39.679
And if you don't, and you're with a platform right now that is not giving you people, taking money from you, selling data, and not making you feel competent in the areas you need to feel competitive in, let us let us help you find a new way.
00:54:39.920 --> 00:54:42.239
And by let us, you mean TRI.
00:54:42.480 --> 00:54:44.159
I well, I mean TRI and people like you.
00:54:44.400 --> 00:54:45.039
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:54:45.199 --> 00:54:48.000
And I want to hear about yes, a hundred percent.
00:54:48.159 --> 00:54:50.320
And I'm also I want to hear a lot about TRI.
00:54:50.639 --> 00:55:00.000
And I also want to say that I think that as I don't want to say this, even within our own field, I see exploitation at the group practice level.
00:55:00.159 --> 00:55:03.119
I see like we need to do better internally.
00:55:03.280 --> 00:55:04.320
And so I push back.
00:55:04.400 --> 00:55:12.400
And one of my projects I'm talking now, I'm collaborating with someone on, is to have a leadership academy, not how to run a business.
00:55:12.639 --> 00:55:13.440
This is different.
00:55:13.840 --> 00:55:15.199
This is how to be a leader.
00:55:15.440 --> 00:55:16.639
Yeah, that's great.
00:55:16.960 --> 00:55:20.639
Because there's a lot of folks, I know you, and this is kind of a segue.
00:55:20.800 --> 00:55:23.679
I know you help with business training as far as that kind of thing.
00:55:23.760 --> 00:55:27.199
And I think that's a vital, vital resource that people need to learn.
00:55:28.320 --> 00:55:32.960
And complementary to that, I think that we need to teach clinicians how to be leaders.
00:55:33.280 --> 00:55:33.840
Absolutely.
00:55:34.480 --> 00:55:40.000
So they can create, they can create the environment where clinicians can thrive.
00:55:40.320 --> 00:55:40.719
That's right.
00:55:40.960 --> 00:55:51.199
And where we're not getting sucked into the scarcity mindset and turning into a mini headway ourselves, where we're becoming the ones exploiting our own.
00:55:51.519 --> 00:55:52.719
I have a lot of concerns about that.
00:55:52.800 --> 00:56:04.480
I don't think people necessarily go into it with that intention, but I think the systems are so broken that fear takes over and then leadership becomes very poor.
00:56:04.800 --> 00:56:15.679
And then it pushes people into the VC platforms because they're like, well, at least, you know, I could probably make more money at this VC platform than I can working for this exploitative person over here.
00:56:15.920 --> 00:56:16.320
That's right.
00:56:16.400 --> 00:56:16.639
That's right.
00:56:16.719 --> 00:56:18.639
We I think we have to do better on all the fronts.
00:56:18.719 --> 00:56:22.639
I think that whether you're in an agency, whether you're in a group practice, I think that good.
00:56:22.800 --> 00:56:30.159
I hope I hope if there's something that comes good out of the VC backed platforms that have just absolutely inundated our industry.
00:56:30.320 --> 00:56:33.039
I hope it's that things become more competitive.
00:56:33.920 --> 00:56:38.880
Money has to go up, and and these companies have to do better by the newer clinicians.
00:56:39.039 --> 00:56:40.480
Like I hope that happens.
00:56:40.559 --> 00:56:43.519
I think that would be a great Yeah, I would love that.
00:56:43.679 --> 00:56:44.000
Yeah.
00:56:44.239 --> 00:56:50.639
So talk more about the offerings because we we should be kind of starting to wind down this conversation because I could talk to you forever.
00:56:50.800 --> 00:56:55.519
But I really want you to highlight some of the offerings that TRI, what are you doing?
00:56:55.679 --> 00:56:57.840
Give us some examples of some of the things that you're doing.
00:56:58.000 --> 00:56:59.599
I know you have your newsletter.
00:56:59.760 --> 00:57:05.199
I know you have uh it sounds like a consult some consultation kind of group stuff you were talking about.
00:57:05.440 --> 00:57:09.119
So what where's this the whole spectrum of what you're trying to build here?
00:57:09.360 --> 00:57:09.599
Sure.
00:57:09.679 --> 00:57:10.400
Thank you for asking.
00:57:10.559 --> 00:57:12.800
So the first thing that we think of is community.
00:57:13.039 --> 00:57:21.760
And we have, of course, uh the break room forum, which is where anyone can go and ask any question at any time where other professionals can answer you, right?
00:57:21.840 --> 00:57:29.039
They can you can hear really from someone in the field, not from an influencer who hasn't been in the field for five years, but from real people who are in the field and doing this.
00:57:29.199 --> 00:57:36.719
And and I and I do I do have a little bit of a concern about the influencers, but so let's come back and talk about that another day because I think a lot of people.
00:57:36.880 --> 00:57:38.079
Oh, we can have a whole episode on that.
00:57:38.320 --> 00:57:42.480
A whole episode on how they've gotten approached by these companies and how much they're selling these companies.
00:57:42.719 --> 00:57:44.320
And they're no longer in the business.
00:57:44.480 --> 00:57:53.360
So if somebody's asking you, I talked to somebody this week who pays who's paid twenty thousand dollars in marketing for just to work one day a week in private practice.
00:57:53.440 --> 00:57:58.960
I was like, No, like we gotta do better by each other, we gotta do better by each other.
00:57:59.039 --> 00:58:02.800
That is that is that is shameful that somebody took this money from this woman.
00:58:02.960 --> 00:58:03.679
That is shameful.
00:58:04.239 --> 00:58:05.119
That's opportunistic.
00:58:05.360 --> 00:58:06.320
It's terrible, right?
00:58:06.400 --> 00:58:08.159
So, okay, so anyway, off my thing.
00:58:08.480 --> 00:58:19.119
But somewhere like that, like this woman could have came to TRI for less than 30 bucks a month and then a whole bunch of people help her figure out how to market herself for one day a week, which by the way was a weekend.
00:58:19.199 --> 00:58:21.199
I was like, oh my gosh, you don't have to market anywhere.
00:58:21.280 --> 00:58:27.440
You just have to contact a couple of therapists and say, I have weekend hours, and I guarantee you're gonna get you're gonna be fine.
00:58:27.519 --> 00:58:33.119
Nobody should have taken a dime from you, you know, because you could have just said, I have weekend hours, like done.
00:58:33.360 --> 00:58:35.840
But so we offer that real life conversation.
00:58:36.000 --> 00:58:39.679
We also have the directory and referral desk.
00:58:39.840 --> 00:58:47.280
And so if you are a person, now if you're a student or you're retiree, you don't have to put accepting clients, but we have this and you can put accepting clients on it.
00:58:47.360 --> 00:58:51.360
And I want to talk to you about what we've done differently, because right now it's gonna sound just like a directory.
00:58:51.519 --> 00:58:52.320
But first of all, it's fun.
00:58:52.400 --> 00:58:53.920
You put up some fun information about yourself.
00:58:54.000 --> 00:58:56.239
This is not public facing, this is private facing.
00:58:56.400 --> 00:59:03.119
But the one problem that I also heard over and over again is that people who are in private practice have a lot of trouble referring to each other.
00:59:03.280 --> 00:59:04.400
They actually don't always know.
00:59:04.559 --> 00:59:06.320
So they have a client that wants to come to them.
00:59:06.480 --> 00:59:07.920
This is outside their wheelhouse.
00:59:08.079 --> 00:59:15.519
They don't have that stockpile of like, oh, this person deals with this, this person deals with this, and this, and this is who I sent to, you know, for this issue.
00:59:15.760 --> 00:59:30.639
And so we wanted to really make it an easier way for people to just go on, do a quick, like, you're in this state, you uh accept this insurance, and you can look at what the person specializes, and then you can send them a private referral request.
00:59:30.800 --> 00:59:36.480
And all of it is you don't give private information, you're setting up a time to talk where you can do 15 minutes.
00:59:36.639 --> 00:59:46.400
Hey, I have this client, I'm seeing the parent, I don't want to see the child, I see you see children, and you're in Illinois, and I I want to send them to you, and you are I already know you take the insurance, you do this.
00:59:46.559 --> 00:59:50.880
So all you're doing is confirming that they're still available or that they're willing to take this person.
00:59:51.280 --> 00:59:51.599
That's it.
00:59:51.679 --> 00:59:53.199
You're you're just doing the handoff.
00:59:53.280 --> 00:59:58.719
Everything else is taken already, um has already happened through the directory when you did the search.
00:59:58.880 --> 01:00:04.800
I've had uh therapists who haven't seen each other in years that met each other on the direct, that saw each other on the directory, were like, oh my gosh, I haven't seen you.
01:00:04.960 --> 01:00:08.639
Like in years, that's super exciting too that people are connecting through that way.
01:00:08.800 --> 01:00:10.559
But here's what we did differently.
01:00:10.719 --> 01:00:12.719
I'll tell you why I didn't do a directory.
01:00:12.960 --> 01:00:23.440
I did not do a regular pri uh public-facing directory because I think there are incredible organizations out there for Native Americans, for black Americans, for LGBTQ community.
01:00:23.679 --> 01:00:28.480
I did not want to come in as a ciswoman and just say, here's my directory, my directory is gonna be better than all your.
01:00:28.639 --> 01:00:30.079
I didn't want to compete with them.
01:00:30.400 --> 01:00:36.079
So in TRI, you list your website and then you list what directory you want to be found on.
01:00:36.239 --> 01:00:40.800
If you want to work through Latinx, then you list Latinx.
01:00:41.199 --> 01:00:44.159
And then somebody can can send their client through.
01:00:44.239 --> 01:00:46.800
Like you decide how you want to be reached.
01:00:47.039 --> 01:01:09.599
And you and this way I am supporting the directories that are long overdue and should be growing, because I think that's also how we start taking things back from big corporations, is to support therapist-started directories that are meeting populations where they need to be met and that we're answering for populations that weren't being met in our big old systems.
01:01:09.840 --> 01:01:17.440
So that is something that is different within TRI, is that we wanted to support those communities, not fight with them, and definitely not compete with them.
01:01:17.679 --> 01:01:19.280
Third thing that we have, are you ready?
01:01:19.360 --> 01:01:21.760
Is we have a professional clinic and marketplace.
01:01:21.840 --> 01:01:23.280
And by the way, this is open to the public.
01:01:23.360 --> 01:01:26.320
Anyone, if even if you're not a member of TRI, you can go in there today.
01:01:26.480 --> 01:01:30.079
And this is where therapists get to put up their side businesses.
01:01:30.159 --> 01:01:32.079
So if you're in TRI, you get to promote.
01:01:32.159 --> 01:01:39.679
If you have a book, if you have a course, if you have a CEU, if you are a coach or consultant on the side, if you have a retreat that you offer.
01:01:40.079 --> 01:01:49.360
Finally, a place where just therapists look at it and it's not costing you thousands and thousands of dollars to try to get into a conference system or into a magazine to put it.
01:01:49.440 --> 01:01:53.119
And this is where I think this is something that's going to grow incredibly.
01:01:53.280 --> 01:01:54.639
This is where I talked to you about that.
01:01:54.719 --> 01:01:58.079
I also vet any companies that are not therapist-funded.
01:01:58.239 --> 01:02:02.320
I vet the therapist-funded ones, by the way, but I also vet companies that are not.
01:02:02.400 --> 01:02:04.320
You have to be registered within the United States.
01:02:04.400 --> 01:02:08.719
And if you're not, it has to be a system that I can see and a system that it has that somebody could sue you.
01:02:08.800 --> 01:02:09.360
I hate to say this.
01:02:09.440 --> 01:02:13.920
If you're in a different country, I want to make sure that somebody could have have liability.
01:02:14.480 --> 01:02:21.360
Can I just say you are the first person that I've ever met that goes to this level of vetting?
01:02:21.519 --> 01:02:23.360
And I admire it so deeply.
01:02:23.519 --> 01:02:25.280
And we talked about this in our pre-interview.
01:02:25.360 --> 01:02:25.760
Yeah.
01:02:26.079 --> 01:02:27.840
How important that is to you.
01:02:28.000 --> 01:02:29.360
It's just, I just needed to say that.
01:02:29.440 --> 01:02:29.840
I love it.
01:02:30.000 --> 01:02:36.320
It's like the level of vetting that you do is it's just it really speaks to your intentionality with what you're doing.
01:02:36.559 --> 01:02:36.960
That's right.
01:02:37.119 --> 01:02:40.480
Because I want this to feel safe for mental health professionals.
01:02:41.039 --> 01:02:42.239
I want this to feel safe.
01:02:42.400 --> 01:02:44.400
And I don't want, I mean, you're on LinkedIn.
01:02:44.559 --> 01:02:46.320
I mean, I get 10 things a day.
01:02:47.280 --> 01:02:47.440
Right.
01:02:47.599 --> 01:02:50.559
And by the way, I had someone who asked me to be on their podcast.
01:02:50.639 --> 01:02:53.039
And when I looked them up, it said Detroit.
01:02:53.280 --> 01:02:59.440
And because I'm me, and I kept digging, and I went and I tried to find their business in Detroit, and their business was not listed in Detroit.
01:02:59.599 --> 01:03:02.000
And so I wrote them back and I said, I cannot find your business.
01:03:02.079 --> 01:03:03.679
And they said, Oh, I'm sorry.
01:03:03.840 --> 01:03:05.679
Uh, I'm in, I forget where it was.
01:03:05.760 --> 01:03:06.400
I'm in the Philippines.
01:03:06.639 --> 01:03:09.199
I'm in like they were nowhere near us and they lied.
01:03:09.280 --> 01:03:13.840
And they lied to me, and they lied on their LinkedIn, and they, this was not an American business.
01:03:14.000 --> 01:03:16.480
And they were not, and they said, Oh, we're working on our US.
01:03:16.559 --> 01:03:18.719
And I said, Well, when you're in the US, you call me back.
01:03:18.960 --> 01:03:19.679
Keep working on it.
01:03:19.840 --> 01:03:20.559
Keep working on it.
01:03:20.800 --> 01:03:23.920
And this makes more sense too with how you vetted me.
01:03:24.159 --> 01:03:30.559
Because when I saw that, you're like, I don't even remember where you contacted me, or but you found me on LinkedIn and you're like, all right, I've done all my research on you.
01:03:30.800 --> 01:03:31.199
Yes.
01:03:31.440 --> 01:03:34.000
So I feel kind of honored that I passed the vetting test.
01:03:34.320 --> 01:03:34.960
You sure did.
01:03:35.119 --> 01:03:35.519
You sure did.
01:03:36.079 --> 01:03:38.159
If somebody says to me they have a book, again, I'm looking at it.
01:03:38.239 --> 01:03:40.480
I don't care if you're self-published, but I'm making sure it's out there.
01:03:40.559 --> 01:03:41.920
I'm making sure you're a real person.
01:03:42.159 --> 01:03:47.519
By the way, to come into TRI, if you're claiming to be a licensed professional, you have to give us your license number, right?
01:03:47.679 --> 01:03:49.199
I have to make sure I can really find you.
01:03:49.360 --> 01:03:50.239
So, and not just me.
01:03:50.320 --> 01:03:51.519
I mean, I have, you know, people.
01:03:51.679 --> 01:03:53.360
That's the latest part I want to say about this.
01:03:53.599 --> 01:03:54.320
I have people.
01:03:54.480 --> 01:03:54.960
I love that.
01:03:55.280 --> 01:03:55.840
I have people.
01:03:56.000 --> 01:03:56.480
I have people.
01:03:56.800 --> 01:04:00.800
But they're therapists who are all doing this volunteering to help TRI grow.
01:04:00.960 --> 01:04:03.519
They are writing newsletters, they are doing all the things.
01:04:03.679 --> 01:04:04.880
They are um, we're gonna start.
01:04:05.039 --> 01:04:06.719
You asked what else we're doing on Wednesdays.
01:04:06.800 --> 01:04:09.440
We're gonna start sort of like a middle of the week break thing.
01:04:09.519 --> 01:04:15.519
So we're gonna have like a calm down video, or somebody's doing a Reiki video for us, or brief breathwork, or right?
01:04:15.599 --> 01:04:18.159
So that these are therapists that are in TRI that said, Yeah, I'll do this.
01:04:18.239 --> 01:04:18.880
I want to do this.
01:04:19.119 --> 01:04:20.400
We also have our meetings.
01:04:20.480 --> 01:04:22.880
We have our once a month happy hour where we get together.
01:04:22.960 --> 01:04:24.320
It's five o'clock on the eastern coast.
01:04:24.400 --> 01:04:28.239
I apologize a little bit for the people on the Pacific coast, that it's about two o'clock.
01:04:28.559 --> 01:04:30.400
A little teetotaling in the afternoon.
01:04:31.119 --> 01:04:31.599
That's right.
01:04:31.840 --> 01:04:33.039
But it's just a release.
01:04:33.119 --> 01:04:36.960
Like we've had the best, most fun conversations for privacy.
01:04:37.119 --> 01:04:39.280
Uh, let's just say our first one involved.
01:04:39.440 --> 01:04:40.079
What did I say?
01:04:40.159 --> 01:04:45.360
It was um sex, it was money, and it was plastic surgery for our clients.
01:04:45.519 --> 01:04:47.199
Like this is what we were talking about, right?
01:04:47.280 --> 01:04:51.599
And these are and these are in the Zoom link is the HIPAA compliant, so we can talk.
01:04:51.679 --> 01:04:54.559
But I always discourage like the identifying information.
01:04:54.960 --> 01:04:55.039
Sure.
01:04:55.519 --> 01:04:55.760
Right.
01:04:55.920 --> 01:05:00.559
And then next, believe it or not, in April, we're starting capacity mapping.
01:05:00.880 --> 01:05:07.679
So before we get to the point of burnout, what I'd like to do is help clinicians figure out where they are now.
01:05:07.920 --> 01:05:18.000
If we start tracking this and watching it and finding out what areas are maybe taking from us more than they're giving, then maybe we can stay in this field longer by having that awareness.
01:05:18.079 --> 01:05:23.360
And then, of course, TRI is going to start putting in the things that can help them, such as those Wednesday meetings.
01:05:23.519 --> 01:05:32.800
Like, so so I really want to make this an individual journey with group support that fights for you on the national level.
01:05:32.960 --> 01:05:33.599
So I love it.
01:05:33.760 --> 01:05:34.079
What is that?
01:05:34.159 --> 01:05:34.960
My social worker?
01:05:35.119 --> 01:05:36.400
Micro, meso, macro.
01:05:36.960 --> 01:05:37.920
Yeah, I love it.
01:05:38.159 --> 01:05:42.239
And I as I'm looking at you, and this is gonna be my longest interview, and I'm just coming to terms with that.
01:05:42.320 --> 01:05:42.719
It's fine.
01:05:42.800 --> 01:05:43.599
It's just so interesting.
01:05:43.920 --> 01:05:44.159
Sorry.
01:05:44.400 --> 01:05:52.239
But like I'm looking at you and I'm I'm just going, all right, how we will continue to talk because I definitely want to partner with what you're doing.
01:05:52.400 --> 01:05:55.280
I believe so strongly in what you're doing, and I see the overlap.
01:05:55.599 --> 01:05:59.039
I mean, the whole thing here is I feel like I'm such a broken record.
01:05:59.199 --> 01:06:01.920
We really need To be coming together on this.
01:06:02.719 --> 01:06:04.719
We can't be working in vacuums anymore.
01:06:04.880 --> 01:06:06.400
And so I get so excited.
01:06:06.559 --> 01:06:08.239
And again, there's no competition.
01:06:08.400 --> 01:06:12.159
I just get so excited when I see I want to lift people up.
01:06:12.320 --> 01:06:13.920
I want to amplify voices.
01:06:14.000 --> 01:06:23.360
And I find I want to find as many ways as I can to partner with people who come from a place of integrity and who are aligned and who are as passionate as you and I both are.
01:06:23.760 --> 01:06:28.000
And so I know I'm going to have you on the show again, Sharon, because I hope so.
01:06:28.239 --> 01:06:30.880
I love your energy and you're brilliant.
01:06:31.119 --> 01:06:39.440
And I my brain is just going in circles of like, I have all these proposals now in my head of like, ooh, ooh, could we do something together on this?
01:06:39.519 --> 01:06:41.280
Because like your directory, I have an idea.
01:06:41.360 --> 01:06:42.800
I'm well, I'll talk about that off lot.
01:06:43.360 --> 01:06:44.000
Fantastic.
01:06:44.079 --> 01:06:44.480
I love it.
01:06:45.199 --> 01:06:47.280
But it just gets my juices going.
01:06:47.440 --> 01:06:48.480
I love what you're doing.
01:06:48.639 --> 01:06:50.000
I want to have you on again.
01:06:50.159 --> 01:06:53.840
You you have some other things that you're doing that I think that we could spend some time talking about.
01:06:54.000 --> 01:07:02.800
And I think your lens on this is what I like about it is like mine, it's broad and you see how all of these pieces tie together.
01:07:02.960 --> 01:07:06.559
The reality is we can't, everybody can't focus on every single piece.
01:07:06.639 --> 01:07:12.159
So we have to find like our like our little niche area within that because otherwise it's just too big.
01:07:12.239 --> 01:07:14.079
There's just too many factors at play.
01:07:14.239 --> 01:07:26.320
But what I hope from my listeners is that everybody in the show notes, I will have all the links of how to find out about TRI, learn more about Sharon and all of her newsletters that she has.
01:07:26.480 --> 01:07:33.679
She loves writing newsletters and more information about what TRI is and how you can get involved in the work that she's doing.
01:07:34.000 --> 01:07:38.000
Sharon, I know that like we just met, what, like was it last week?
01:07:38.079 --> 01:07:39.199
Or the week I lose track of this.
01:07:39.920 --> 01:07:41.199
Yeah, it was a week or two ago, yeah.
01:07:41.440 --> 01:07:45.679
A week or two ago, but I already feel like we're such kindred spirits and I feel like I've known you for a long time.
01:07:46.000 --> 01:07:46.320
Definitely.
01:07:46.639 --> 01:07:48.800
And I know she's she's throwing me hearts, people.
01:07:48.880 --> 01:07:49.840
She's throwing me hearts.
01:07:50.320 --> 01:07:50.480
I do.
01:07:50.719 --> 01:07:51.599
I love what you're doing.
01:07:51.760 --> 01:07:52.239
I love it.
01:07:52.320 --> 01:07:54.480
I just, I, I get, I'm a little effusive.
01:07:54.559 --> 01:07:57.440
I just, I know that about myself where I just gush on people.
01:07:57.760 --> 01:08:02.239
But it's not every day that I find someone that number one energetically matches me.
01:08:02.559 --> 01:08:07.039
Um, but also like just how how what's the word?
01:08:07.119 --> 01:08:08.559
This is the menopause brain.
01:08:08.719 --> 01:08:12.880
How grounded you are in integrity, the vetting, all of that.
01:08:12.960 --> 01:08:19.520
And so I say that for folks because being a member, whether or not Sharon, if there's a is there a membership fee?
01:08:19.760 --> 01:08:20.720
There is a membership fee.
01:08:20.800 --> 01:08:21.039
There is.
01:08:21.119 --> 01:08:21.279
Yeah.
01:08:21.680 --> 01:08:22.800
I made it super cheap though, guys.
01:08:22.880 --> 01:08:23.439
So perfect.
01:08:23.520 --> 01:08:23.840
There you go.
01:08:23.920 --> 01:08:24.640
I want to keep it there.
01:08:24.720 --> 01:08:27.039
I want to make it that we go down over time that up.
01:08:27.439 --> 01:08:28.000
Exactly.
01:08:28.159 --> 01:08:28.800
Exactly.
01:08:29.039 --> 01:08:32.800
That we all do need to be paid for our time.
01:08:32.880 --> 01:08:37.439
And we're not, we're not, we're never gonna be paid for all of our time because we spent so much time.
01:08:37.600 --> 01:08:39.119
But I'm glad that you're charging.
01:08:39.199 --> 01:08:41.600
I think a lot of the time we try to give too many things away.
01:08:41.760 --> 01:08:50.000
But I think that this is the something that folks should support and check out and share, just like I'm always here's where I transition to like this podcast.
01:08:50.399 --> 01:08:53.520
Share this podcast, like it, subscribe.
01:08:53.680 --> 01:08:54.960
I'm a Gen Xer.
01:08:55.119 --> 01:08:57.520
I don't really understand all how all of this works.
01:08:57.600 --> 01:09:03.920
But what I do know is that if people are subscribing, if people are liking, if people are sharing, more and more people.
01:09:04.239 --> 01:09:11.279
Right now, I've gotten from my little app, we're being listened to in over 350 cities across the world.
01:09:11.520 --> 01:09:11.840
Wow.
01:09:12.640 --> 01:09:15.920
I have I have a fan in Singapore, whoever you are, thank you for listening.
01:09:16.159 --> 01:09:16.640
Isn't that fine?
01:09:16.800 --> 01:09:18.399
Um people contact you.
01:09:18.720 --> 01:09:19.520
Well, they didn't contact me.
01:09:19.600 --> 01:09:22.399
I just look and I'm like, someone's listened to like all the episodes from Singapore.
01:09:22.720 --> 01:09:22.960
Cool.
01:09:23.039 --> 01:09:24.960
I don't know who that person is, but thank you.
01:09:25.199 --> 01:09:26.960
We have to be supporting each other.
01:09:27.199 --> 01:09:36.239
If anything, sign up for TRI's newsletter so that you can learn more about Sharon's mind and the things that fascinate her and the things that she wants to educate you about.
01:09:36.479 --> 01:09:38.239
So, any final words, Sharon?
01:09:38.560 --> 01:09:39.199
Well, two.
01:09:39.279 --> 01:09:43.760
First of all, of course, I didn't even mention we have resources in there already about starting private practices and things like that.
01:09:43.920 --> 01:09:44.479
Oh, yes, yes, yes.
01:09:44.640 --> 01:09:44.720
Right?
01:09:44.960 --> 01:09:47.840
Finding your niche, talking about niche, talk about all the jobs that you could do.
01:09:47.920 --> 01:09:49.039
Um, and I have a lot of goals.
01:09:49.119 --> 01:09:53.760
So, and I'd love to talk to you about that because I have thought also about how we could give sabbatical years, maybe.
01:09:54.000 --> 01:09:54.239
Oh.
01:09:54.479 --> 01:09:54.720
Right?
01:09:54.960 --> 01:09:55.600
Let's talk about that now.
01:09:55.920 --> 01:09:56.399
I know, I know.
01:09:56.479 --> 01:10:01.279
We have we have a lot to talk about, but I would like to say one last thing, and I want everyone to really hear this and because I mean it.
01:10:01.439 --> 01:10:03.279
So you remember my idea for the union.
01:10:03.439 --> 01:10:07.359
I want you to know that everyone on my team will be paid before I am.
01:10:07.439 --> 01:10:14.560
And my idea is that when we get to the place where TRI is making money to be paid, that the membership would vote on how much money I get paid.
01:10:14.960 --> 01:10:15.760
I love that.
01:10:16.000 --> 01:10:20.880
I mean, again, it's it's because this is not about an ego thing.
01:10:21.119 --> 01:10:23.760
This is I'm really trying to change the industry.
01:10:23.920 --> 01:10:26.479
I'm really not change it, take it back if we ever have to.
01:10:26.640 --> 01:10:26.880
Exactly.
01:10:27.039 --> 01:10:27.680
Take it back.
01:10:27.920 --> 01:10:29.920
But it all comes back to leading with integrity.
01:10:30.079 --> 01:10:30.399
Yeah.
01:10:30.479 --> 01:10:30.720
Yes.
01:10:31.119 --> 01:10:34.159
Like what is the reason that you're doing this?
01:10:34.239 --> 01:10:39.119
And if it's coming from there, which for you it obviously is, then our decisions get made based on that.
01:10:39.279 --> 01:10:39.600
Yeah.
01:10:39.760 --> 01:10:40.000
Yeah.
01:10:40.239 --> 01:10:41.279
So I applaud you.
01:10:41.359 --> 01:10:43.279
I'm so glad that I randomly saw your wheel.
01:10:44.000 --> 01:10:44.800
That you stalked me.
01:10:44.880 --> 01:10:45.520
Thank you.
01:10:45.760 --> 01:10:48.560
And that I was like, hey, we need to connect.
01:10:48.720 --> 01:10:58.720
And that you did your due diligence and you were curious enough about whoever this person was that was in your feed, and that you did your due diligence in looking me up and being curious and connecting with me.
01:10:59.119 --> 01:11:00.800
So I really, really appreciate that.
01:11:00.960 --> 01:11:02.960
I look forward to future conversations with you.
01:11:03.199 --> 01:11:03.840
Definitely.
01:11:04.079 --> 01:11:05.840
And thank you so much for being here.
01:11:06.079 --> 01:11:06.560
Thank you.
01:11:06.800 --> 01:11:07.680
Thank you, everyone.
01:11:07.920 --> 01:11:08.159
Thank you.
01:11:09.119 --> 01:11:11.359
And I want to thank all of my listeners.
01:11:11.600 --> 01:11:14.159
Again, please share, like, subscribe.
01:11:14.319 --> 01:11:19.039
And my name is Civy Suckerman, and this is Therapist Unchained.
