00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:01.760
Welcome to the Power Table.
00:00:01.919 --> 00:00:09.919
If you are leading your business with a big vision and you're ready for your visibility to match your ambition, you are in the right place.
00:00:10.080 --> 00:00:16.719
I'm your host, Taylor Smith, founder of the Power Table, serial entrepreneur, and international keynote speaker.
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:25.679
I've generated millions of my business for speaking of personal branding and community building, and I'm here to teach you how to do the same as a founder-led brand.
00:00:25.839 --> 00:00:37.520
Each week, we dive into the business strategies, identity, and leadership work required to become a woman, people recognize, trust, and choose again and again.
00:00:37.679 --> 00:00:43.119
Because your next level isn't just about what you do, it's about who you become in the process.
00:00:43.359 --> 00:00:45.679
This is your seat at the table.
00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:19.840
My business would be repositioned a little bit, and a lot of scheduling changes and challenges came up.
00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:20.959
But here we are.
00:01:21.120 --> 00:01:23.359
Welcome back to the Power Table Podcast.
00:01:23.439 --> 00:01:24.879
I'm your host, Taylor Smith.
00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:41.599
I thought it would be really cool to be able to share with all of you the insane story of how we ended up here and also to give a bit of a life update of what is it like personally running a business from two different states, 2,000 miles apart?
00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:42.959
How did all this happen?
00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:44.640
How did it go with our move?
00:01:44.879 --> 00:01:59.519
To really kind of pull back the curtain and give you a little bit of a peek into my life as the founder of Power Table, share some of my personal goals and things like that, and just really be open with all of you who are listening to the podcast right now.
00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:14.960
Because I feel although I'm broadcasting this to you, so it's a bit of a one-sided conversation, I know that it's not because many of you, you DM me, we talk about it, and I just love to share our best here on the podcast.
00:02:15.199 --> 00:02:38.080
And I think that for many of us, there are like these really far-off things we think about and dream about and talk about in our business, like moving to a new climate or a new house or a new place we've always dreamed of, or being able to work fully remotely, or just having an insane amount of freedom and flexibility to be able to just up and make quick decisions with your business.
00:02:38.159 --> 00:02:46.960
And I'm very grateful to be in that kind of a position and to share a little bit about what that actually looks like for those of you who are maybe considering something like this.
00:02:47.120 --> 00:02:55.680
So I'll just start by saying that I've always wanted to live in two different places or locations and be able to go back and forth.
00:02:55.919 --> 00:03:26.560
And in addition to that, if you have ever been around me in person, you've probably heard me joke that like my dream is to be a reverse snowbird, to spend, you know, the hot parts of the year where it's hot and warm, like I love the summer, and then to also be able to go somewhere and get some cool weather, um, or just make sure that I'm going somewhere in the winter where it's not too cold, because I am a summer girly, um, but get to enjoy cooler fall weather somewhere, and then also get to enjoy the heat of the summer too.
00:03:26.719 --> 00:03:37.520
So I've long said that this was a goal of mine, but it it would never seem possible because of you know, we've lived in Florida, like our house is there, our life is there, that's where my business events are.
00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:43.919
And at the time it was kind of like we don't have a reason really to up and move, and it feels inconvenient to do that.
00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:50.240
And so anyway, it just like a dream that's come up a lot, and I always just kind of tabled it as like this is not the time.
00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:52.479
So, fun story here.
00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:57.520
I don't know that I've actually ever shared this anywhere on on social, on the internet.
00:03:57.840 --> 00:04:00.479
You're if you're listening to this podcast, you're the first one to hear this.
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:05.840
So, how all of this came about was Power Table Live at our in-person conference in April.
00:04:05.919 --> 00:04:08.479
My husband was there, and he is we call him Mr.
00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:09.599
Power Table, by the way.
00:04:09.759 --> 00:04:13.360
If you see him at next year's event, please introduce yourself and say, You must be Mr.
00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:14.240
Power Table.
00:04:14.400 --> 00:04:19.439
So we're at the event, and you know, he works the event, he's at the back of the room, helping out with whatever's needed.
00:04:19.600 --> 00:04:33.759
This year he did a combination of stepping in to help the coffee bar, to running some errands, to picking up food for me and the volunteers and the team at the end of the conference so that they would have something to eat during breakdown.
00:04:33.920 --> 00:04:38.319
So he's around and so I'm up on stage, giving my keynotes, speaking.
00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:41.279
Conference is going great, and I know he's at the back of the room.
00:04:41.439 --> 00:04:45.759
Little did I know, he is sitting back there deciding, you know what?
00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:58.720
I am watching Taylor do her thing, and I've been really frustrated with my like current company for a year and a half now, and like at some point I just gotta stop being frustrated and I have to make some decisions and do something about it.
00:04:58.879 --> 00:05:08.160
So he sits back there, and apparently, news to me, he rage applies for a career opportunity in New Mexico.
00:05:08.319 --> 00:05:10.879
And I didn't know anything about this, he didn't tell me.
00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:15.519
So, two weeks after Power Table Live, we go to Cayman Islands for vacation.
00:05:15.680 --> 00:05:16.560
We go to the Caribbean.
00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:25.120
I love the Caymans, and we are on the plane flying to the Cayman Islands when he gets a missed call and he like he looks at his phone and like what?
00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:30.480
And he like shows me the missed call phone number and he's like, that's a New Mexico area code.
00:05:30.560 --> 00:05:33.279
And I'm like, why would you be getting a call from New Mexico?
00:05:33.439 --> 00:05:36.879
And he's like, so I kind of applied for a job.
00:05:37.120 --> 00:05:50.959
The behind the scenes of this is that Josh has wanted to work where he now has a job for about four years and has applied there multiple times, but it's super prestigious, very difficult to get a position there.
00:05:51.199 --> 00:05:58.959
And so many people go their entire careers without ever even receiving a phone call or an interview or a job offer whatsoever from there.
00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:01.600
And so we're very surprised to see this.
00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:06.879
So we get to the Cayman Islands and he calls back and they're like, Hey, so can you interview on Monday?
00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:09.839
And he's like, I'm kind of on vacation in another country.
00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:11.839
And they're like, Okay, can you interview Tuesday?
00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:13.439
He's like, Yeah, I could do Tuesday.
00:06:13.600 --> 00:06:15.040
So he does his interview.
00:06:15.199 --> 00:06:19.360
And then two weeks later, he goes, he flies to New Mexico for an on-site.
00:06:19.680 --> 00:06:24.560
And while he's there, they offer him a job on the spot, super rare, never happens.
00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:27.519
And they're like, Can you please be here in five weeks?
00:06:27.759 --> 00:06:29.120
Now that's insane.
00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:30.959
And he said yes on the spot.
00:06:31.199 --> 00:06:42.639
And so the normal process for getting moved out there, even getting a job offer or cleared from HR to start, uh, because of some classified work involved, is like typically for people like six to 18 months.
00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:45.839
And here we are being told, can you be in New Mexico in five weeks?
00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:54.639
And one of the cool things is that while initially I was like, maybe I'll stay in Florida and you can go out there and then I'll come out there later, eventually, like it kind of hit me.
00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:56.240
I was like, why would I do that?
00:06:56.399 --> 00:06:58.800
My business has complete and total flexibility.
00:06:58.959 --> 00:07:05.279
Why wouldn't I take this opportunity to one help move and then get things settled in our New Mexico home?
00:07:05.360 --> 00:07:06.639
But two, like, why?
00:07:06.800 --> 00:07:09.839
Why would I stay alone in our house in Florida?
00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:15.439
So we up and packed everything in five weeks that we were gonna take with us.
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:18.319
And we actually left before the movers even arrived.
00:07:18.480 --> 00:07:20.079
That's how quickly we had to be here.
00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:24.639
And we got to New Mexico and it's so beautiful and truly love it here.
00:07:24.879 --> 00:07:37.519
But I thought as as much as I love telling that story, it's like the other fun part of this story is you you never know quickly things are gonna happen once everything is finally aligned.
00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:46.879
And you can work towards goals for a really long time, and then it feels like everything's happening overnight, whether that's success in your business or or big career opportunities, and things are happening really quickly.
00:07:46.959 --> 00:07:54.480
But in reality, you may have been working towards those goals or subconsciously moving towards those goals for a very long time.
00:07:54.639 --> 00:08:02.639
So the other part of the story is what all of you might not know is four years ago, this is actually where we got married.
00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:11.199
We eloped in the desert in a place called Ghost Ranch, which is about less than an hour from where we currently live now in northern New Mexico.
00:08:11.360 --> 00:08:12.480
And we love the desert.
00:08:12.639 --> 00:08:14.000
I've always loved the Southwest.
00:08:14.079 --> 00:08:17.120
I lived in Arizona for many, many years.
00:08:17.360 --> 00:08:28.399
And so we were here four years ago, and we came to Los Alamos, where we live now, and we came to this town and it was so beautiful and we loved it so much.
00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:34.320
And I remember us having this conversation where we were like, wouldn't it be so cool to live here?
00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:37.440
Like we just let ourselves play in the possibility.
00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:52.559
And that's a phrase that you may hear me say if you're in my mastermind, if you're, you know, you've listened to this podcast before, is let yourself start getting more comfortable playing in possibility instead of assuming things are off limits or unaffordable or out of reach for you.
00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:53.600
Let yourself just play.
00:08:53.679 --> 00:08:55.200
And wouldn't it be wild if?
00:08:55.360 --> 00:09:01.759
What if it was possible if these types of things could happen, whether it's life or business or a combination of in-between?
00:09:01.919 --> 00:09:04.720
And we went to one of the history museums here four years ago.
00:09:04.879 --> 00:09:15.200
And what was wild is so while we had loved the town, we go to this history museum, and the volunteer there is like, you know, like we were saying, we're on our honeymoon, and you know, this is really cool.
00:09:15.279 --> 00:09:17.120
And Josh is like, yeah, I'm really interested in this.
00:09:17.200 --> 00:09:18.320
I would love to work here someday.
00:09:18.559 --> 00:09:24.480
Docent at the museum is like, well, you know, they are like really starting to ramp up and hire over the next few years.
00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:25.759
They have a big plan.
00:09:25.919 --> 00:09:30.399
And based on what you've shared about your experience, like you're probably really qualified for this.
00:09:30.559 --> 00:09:36.240
And so someone here planted the seed four years ago about us being here, right?
00:09:36.399 --> 00:09:40.639
And we had that conversation of like, wouldn't it be wild if this was possible?
00:09:40.879 --> 00:09:43.840
Fast forward four years, and here we are.
00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:52.480
So that's the crazy story about how I ended up running my business now from two different states, 2,000 miles apart, and going back and forth.
00:09:52.720 --> 00:09:54.480
Now, there were some definitely some bums.
00:09:54.720 --> 00:10:00.399
So, fun facts in the first three weeks we were here, we had a gas leak in our house, so no hot water for two weeks.
00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:02.879
The we got here and the house wasn't clean.
00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:07.120
Um, and there's supposed to be a move-in clean, so we had to get that resolved.
00:10:07.360 --> 00:10:17.360
And our stuff got delayed because the driver had a health emergency and then they put our stuff into storage in Albuquerque, and so we just had to wait until it could be delivered.
00:10:17.519 --> 00:10:24.159
So there were definitely some like wrinkles in the timeline, some unexpected plot twists.
00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:34.159
But what's really cool about this is the ability to just up and move here, the ability to handle this move is that a lot of it is thanks to my business, right?
00:10:34.320 --> 00:10:41.679
It's thanks to the company I've I've built, the way I've consciously chosen to structure things, specifically my time.
00:10:41.840 --> 00:11:04.320
So having standard coaching call times, having limits on the times that I will take other calls, batching content creation, having a team to do specific things, working in longer-term plans for my business and three, six, and 12-month plans, all of these, because they create so much structure, they also create so much flexibility.
00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:09.279
And my time isn't eaten up through context switching or doing all the things myself.
00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:17.519
And I'm just really grateful for the way that I have structured my business because it really made this pretty seamless for the most part.
00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:34.399
And that doesn't mean that I did that overnight, but over the past few years, like really paying so much attention to structure and operations and foundations and SOPs and systems and processes, which is so boring and not an exciting part of business, right?
00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:44.480
Like launches are exciting, sales are exciting, events are exciting, but the infrastructure of your business is actually what creates the freedom and the ease that you're looking for.
00:11:44.639 --> 00:11:49.039
Um and then the visibility and the marketing and the launches, they just support all of that, right?
00:11:49.200 --> 00:12:00.399
And so right now, if I were to share with you kind of what a normal month looks like over the next year for me, it's like kind of going back and forth between Florida and New Mexico every few weeks.
00:12:00.559 --> 00:12:02.879
And that is not necessarily convenient.
00:12:03.039 --> 00:12:08.399
So, fun fact, I'm going from one tiny airport to another, that there are no direct flights.
00:12:08.480 --> 00:12:15.519
So that means at least one layover, which is very likely for delays, and it means a full travel day each way.
00:12:15.759 --> 00:12:20.559
I was just coming home from Florida back to New Mexico this past weekend.
00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:24.799
And just as I got ready to leave for the airport, my flight got canceled.
00:12:25.039 --> 00:12:33.200
And so then I was like going back and forth, and I thought that I was gonna have to redirect to Albuquerque, which would be like a two-hour drive for my husband to come pick me up.
00:12:33.360 --> 00:12:36.799
And fortunately, I got on the flight that night and I got into Santa Fe.
00:12:36.879 --> 00:12:47.200
It's planned after two hours on the phone with American Airlines, which I had to change airlines because I used to always fly with Delta, but Delta doesn't come into Santa Fe.
00:12:47.279 --> 00:12:50.960
So just little fun facts of like these are the things it takes to readjust.
00:12:51.200 --> 00:13:07.120
And that also has meant changes in the structure of my business too, because of the travel, but now coordinating with my husband on one side and my family on the other, of that travel of like who's gonna pick me up and like what time are the flights and kind of going back and forth.
00:13:07.279 --> 00:13:14.080
And in particular in New Mexico, we live 45 minutes from the airport, so there's no Ubers up the mountain.
00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:19.279
So it really gets a little bit complex with everything that's going on.
00:13:19.440 --> 00:13:32.720
Um, it's really, I think just at the end of the day, kind of calling me to a higher standard of leadership and of a CEO mindset of you can't just not do things in advance because you're gonna need that time later, right?
00:13:32.799 --> 00:13:42.879
And knowing, okay, if I'm losing four or five workdays a month to travel days, that means my work days have to be really, really focused, or I'm gonna need to delegate more, I need to hire more.
00:13:43.039 --> 00:13:46.960
I need to outsource more in my home in order to make capacity for these things.
00:13:47.120 --> 00:13:48.879
So I'm grateful for the challenge.
00:13:48.960 --> 00:13:50.320
I'm grateful for the opportunity.
00:13:50.399 --> 00:13:55.120
I love the desert and I'm so happy to be back here and happy to be going back and forth, right?
00:13:55.279 --> 00:13:57.120
Power Table Live isn't going anywhere.
00:13:57.279 --> 00:14:08.320
We have events throughout the year in Florida, and I'm just really grateful and excited to be in kind of this new season, even though I know it's going to come with some challenges.
00:14:08.559 --> 00:14:18.399
So if I were to wrap up this episode with maybe something that's helpful for you, besides just some fun personal life updates and insights, I would say two things.
00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:22.080
One, when was the last time that you played it in possibility?
00:14:22.320 --> 00:14:26.799
When was the last time you just let yourself dream about what could be?
00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:30.799
Where you floated some wild ideas, even if you don't act on them?
00:14:30.960 --> 00:14:35.039
When was the last time you thought about that and you let yourself kind of model that?
00:14:35.200 --> 00:14:41.200
So some ideas that come up are, you know, if the funds and resources were unlimited, who would you hire, right?
00:14:41.440 --> 00:14:43.759
Research that, build a relationship with those people.
00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:47.519
If you had all the time in the world, what would you do?
00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:48.639
Would you be writing a book?
00:14:48.799 --> 00:14:50.240
Would you record a podcast?
00:14:50.480 --> 00:14:52.240
Would you be renovating your home?
00:14:52.399 --> 00:14:55.679
If you weren't tied to a physical location, what would that look like?
00:14:55.840 --> 00:14:56.559
Where would you travel?
00:14:56.720 --> 00:14:57.360
Where would you go?
00:14:57.600 --> 00:15:08.480
Just starting to play in more possibility and thinking, getting out of like our day-to-day work and just thinking about what do you actually want out of your life and more importantly, how can your business support that?
00:15:08.879 --> 00:15:11.440
Because at the end of the day, that's what it's all for, right?
00:15:11.519 --> 00:15:17.120
There's no, there's no second round and there's no opportunity to do it all over again.
00:15:17.200 --> 00:15:21.360
And so doing it in the way that's gonna actually make you happy is the most important thing.
00:15:21.600 --> 00:15:28.399
And then the second thing that I'll leave you with is maybe a quick little reflection of like the structure of your business.
00:15:28.639 --> 00:15:35.200
What are some things you're settling with or that you keep putting off that would create more freedom and more capacity for you?
00:15:35.600 --> 00:15:39.360
But you're avoiding them because they take some work to set up.
00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:45.919
Maybe it's blocking your calendar or restructuring calls so they only take certain they're only on certain days or times.
00:15:46.159 --> 00:15:51.039
Maybe you need to set up a batching process for certain types of content or deliverables.
00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:55.039
Maybe you need to create templates and SOPs for yourself or your team.
00:15:55.279 --> 00:15:57.120
These are all very time intensive.
00:15:57.200 --> 00:15:58.720
I won't dance around that fact.
00:15:58.799 --> 00:16:03.120
And that's why they get put off so much because we feel that, you know, they're not urgent.
00:16:03.200 --> 00:16:11.200
They can be put off by things that are urgent, but they are the things that will ultimately create more time, space, and energy for you in your business.
00:16:11.360 --> 00:16:16.080
Whether you plan to move across the country like me in five weeks or not.
00:16:16.320 --> 00:16:18.399
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this episode.
00:16:18.559 --> 00:16:22.559
I would love to know if you did listen, tell me, just tell me you you tuned in.
00:16:22.639 --> 00:16:26.960
I would love to hear from you and hear about the things that you've done that maybe were like crazy like that.
00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:29.039
Like, where did you up and move in five weeks?
00:16:29.120 --> 00:16:30.879
And how did your business support that?
00:16:30.960 --> 00:16:32.960
Or how did your business change because of it?
00:16:33.120 --> 00:16:34.320
Let's talk in the DMs.
00:16:34.399 --> 00:16:37.200
Send me a DM on Instagram or LinkedIn or wherever you like to hang out.
00:16:37.279 --> 00:16:41.519
And I will talk to you soon in the next episode of the Power Table Podcast.
