Can you confess your sins to an AI chatbot? Should you trust an algorithm with your prayers? And what happens when technology begins influencing how people experience faith?
AI-powered prayer apps, virtual religious figures, and chatbots offering spiritual guidance are already challenging our assumptions about privacy, religious authority, and the relationship between faith and technology. As these tools become part of people's spiritual lives, their implications deserve serious examination.
At the heart of this emerging reality is the central inquiry behind Sacred Data: What happens when our most sacred human experiences become data?
In “I Surrender All… My Data?”, attorney and Harvard Berkman Klein Center Research Fellow Danielle Davis Canty launches Sacred Data, Secular Algorithms, a new investigative series from The Miseducation of Technology®.
Drawing on her research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, law, privacy, and faith, Danielle explores the legal and ethical challenges of entrusting spiritually significant information to commercial AI systems, alongside the implications for spiritual formation and religious authority.
Over the course of the series, she'll examine emerging technologies, investigate the rules governing them, and engage experts and everyday users to better understand what's at stake.
Next in Part 2: Why Christian communities within Black America are the starting point for this investigation.
Technology may have been miseducated, but you do not have to be.
