Slate as decision infrastructureThe useful question is no longer:“Can Slate do this?”It is:“What decision will this change?”That is my first big synthesis from the Slate Summit sessions.I’m pulling that thread from several sessions, including Ben Parsons and Sarah Kotlinski’s “Durable Change By Design: From Human Insight to Decision Infrastructure” from College of the Holy Cross and Gettysburg College; Mara Marzocchi’s “What a View! Querybase Views for Quick Wins” from Suffolk University Graduate Admissions; Catie Clark, Christie Smith, Olivia Nash, and Ally Metcalf’s “Adapting to Yield Volatility” from Niche, Alfred University, University of the Pacific, and The University of Tulsa; and Russell Goff, Ashley Valladares, and Kylie Hall’s “From Rough Demo to Data Hit” from Sherman College of Chiropractic and enrollmentFUEL.The sessions themselves show different things: decision design, reusable reporting surfaces, yield volatility, and data storytelling. My interpretation is that these are not separate conversations. They are all pointing toward the same craft problem: Slate work is becoming operating design.A dashboard is not just a report. A campaign is not just a message. A Querybase View is not just a technical convenience. A model is not just a score. Each one should clarify a decision, identify an owner, and make the next action less fuzzy.Practical test:Pick one Slate build your team already uses. Ask:1. What decision is this supposed to improve?2. Who owns that decision?3. What evidence does the build surface?4. What should someone do differently after seeing it?5. How would we know if it is working? If you cannot answer those questions, the build may still be useful. But it is probably not finished. This is the first idea I’m carrying into the Conference Insights Engine for Slate Summit 2026, presented through The Innovation Forge: less recap, more usable interpretation.Where is Slate already acting as decision infrastructure in your office?
