00:00:10.960 --> 00:00:13.519
Hello and welcome to the Education Exchange.
00:00:13.599 --> 00:00:17.359
I'm your host, Superintendent Jeremy Caius here at the Tolson Union High School District.
00:00:17.519 --> 00:00:21.519
And today we're going to talk about some planned Westview facility upgrades.
00:00:21.679 --> 00:00:27.839
And here to tee off this conversation, we have a couple of our members from our student government team, along with the principal of the school.
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:29.519
So I'll allow them to introduce themselves.
00:00:29.760 --> 00:00:30.480
My name's Maida.
00:00:30.640 --> 00:00:31.920
I'm junior class treasury.
00:00:32.079 --> 00:00:33.200
My name's Anna Lisa.
00:00:33.280 --> 00:00:35.119
I'm a student body vice president.
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:39.200
And I'm Natalie Kinones, the proud principal of Westview High School.
00:00:39.600 --> 00:00:40.000
All right.
00:00:40.159 --> 00:00:43.119
So we're we're planning a lot of upgrades here for Westview.
00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:52.719
It is our second oldest campus, so only behind Tullison campus, the original school, but Westview came right along uh almost 40 years ago.
00:00:52.799 --> 00:00:54.719
This campus is almost 40 years old now.
00:00:54.799 --> 00:00:56.000
It's about to hit 40.
00:00:56.159 --> 00:00:59.119
Uh so we have we have a lot of different things that are planned.
00:00:59.280 --> 00:01:01.280
Uh we've started some work here already.
00:01:01.359 --> 00:01:04.719
So we had the uh football field, was upgraded to turf.
00:01:04.879 --> 00:01:06.640
So that was a nice addition.
00:01:06.799 --> 00:01:09.040
Um, but there's still a lot more work to do here.
00:01:09.359 --> 00:01:12.799
Uh it's it's it's gonna be the primary focus for the district for a while.
00:01:12.959 --> 00:01:18.319
Now that we've addressed a lot of the concerns at Tolleson, like we're we're moving towards a lot of the concerns that we have at the Westview campus.
00:01:18.560 --> 00:01:21.359
So get all of your thoughts and opinions on each of those.
00:01:21.519 --> 00:01:32.560
Uh, I want to start first with the projects that were already in the final stages of design and unfortunately got put on pause last year when uh when the bond didn't pass.
00:01:32.640 --> 00:01:37.280
Uh, and and let's address those projects and the needs for those projects and get your thoughts around that.
00:01:37.439 --> 00:01:41.760
Uh so the first ones we'll talk about is um the new ROTC building.
00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:49.519
So uh our ROTC program unfortunately doesn't have the uh proper distance inside their current building to qualify for marksmanship.
00:01:49.599 --> 00:01:51.359
And they've pointed out other concerns in the past.
00:01:51.439 --> 00:01:57.359
In fact, we've talked about it in Stugo before uh in in recent years about some of the needs of ROTC.
00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:02.000
What are what are some of your thoughts around creating a new ROTC building here on the campus?
00:02:02.319 --> 00:02:04.799
I was in ROTC for two years, actually.
00:02:04.879 --> 00:02:10.240
And so we when we did do marksmanship, we did it inside of a different, we had like two classrooms and they're joined together.
00:02:10.400 --> 00:02:13.759
We did it in one classroom, and you gotta say, you know, it is a little get a little bit squish.
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:14.800
And then I've also heard from Mr.
00:02:14.879 --> 00:02:22.960
Cardoza that you guys are that a part of like the writing that um a markmanship room is supposed to be provided.
00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:26.719
So I think it is really smart of us to actually continue doing that.
00:02:27.280 --> 00:02:29.680
And then they they do a wonderful job for our campus.
00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:31.520
They bring a lot of pride to Westview.
00:02:31.680 --> 00:02:38.479
So in order to make sure that we continue to grow that program, we need to make sure that we bring them the building that they need and the facilities that they need.
00:02:39.199 --> 00:02:46.240
And I gotta say, it's great, it's great talking about the ROTC program on a day when you guys are celebrating a camo day and you're all in camouflage.
00:02:46.319 --> 00:02:49.439
Like it's like perfect to start start the conversation there.
00:02:49.680 --> 00:03:01.919
Um a couple of the other uh new additions are um a new field house out by uh by your football field that would have you know concessions and and new restrooms in it.
00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:05.199
Uh what are some of your thoughts around you know seeing that new addition?
00:03:05.280 --> 00:03:09.120
Like what have you what have you noticed being out around football or anything else?
00:03:09.439 --> 00:03:15.840
The restrooms are the restrooms that we use at the football field are the ones connected to the current RTC building.
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:20.240
And those they get either really hot or they get really packed easily.
00:03:20.319 --> 00:03:24.080
And there's like usually huge line just to wait to go use the bathroom.
00:03:25.199 --> 00:03:28.879
And then it's also just like again, for student government, our biggest thing is school spirit.
00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:35.919
So we want to see our school constantly getting better and seeing how else that we as students as well, but how the school can get better as well.
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:43.199
So even seeing not only the restrooms, but also what we do for concession stands as well, it's it's a huge upgrade, which is I'm really excited for it.
00:03:43.439 --> 00:03:47.840
Always a representation of the school, and it would be nice for the field house to represent us as well.
00:03:48.080 --> 00:03:55.840
So you have the other side, the uh visitor side, where of course they use the have to use the porta potties because we don't have bathrooms on that side.
00:03:55.919 --> 00:03:56.639
And it's separate.
00:03:56.719 --> 00:03:59.360
This is an older school, so we're limited on the space.
00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:02.560
So it would be nice to give both field houses.
00:04:02.879 --> 00:04:03.439
Oh, absolutely.
00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:07.520
And definitely not aesthetically pleasing to see porta potties out at your football game.
00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:09.919
So you would we would love to get away from that.
00:04:10.159 --> 00:04:12.400
Uh, let's talk about some of your other projects.
00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:20.480
Uh so one of them is is uh the demoing of the portable buildings to make way for a new gymnasium.
00:04:20.639 --> 00:04:24.160
Uh, we'll focus first on the on the demoing of the portable buildings.
00:04:24.319 --> 00:04:28.000
Uh, several years ago, those were actually scheduled to be demo.
00:04:28.160 --> 00:04:40.879
It was literally the day before the demolition began that our our principal of DLA asked, could they use those portables as opposed to uh you know being over at the Tolson campus?
00:04:41.040 --> 00:04:42.560
And and we granted that request.
00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:44.160
We stopped the demolition.
00:04:44.399 --> 00:04:57.680
Um, but now we're we're looking at getting back to demoing uh those portables, especially since DLA is about to have a new home uh over by the district office in the new building over uh just off the 101.
00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:00.240
So, what are your thoughts around the portables?
00:05:00.399 --> 00:05:07.040
So that it's a 40-year-old campus, which means uh the portables that were built to last for 10 years have we've gotten more than 10 years out of them.
00:05:07.199 --> 00:05:09.360
Uh, have you guys been in those portable buildings before?
00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:12.879
Have you ever, you know, stepped inside them and seen what it's like in there?
00:05:13.120 --> 00:05:13.680
I have not.
00:05:13.920 --> 00:05:14.560
All my four years.
00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:16.399
I don't think I've ever really been inside portable.
00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:17.439
They just pass by them, you know.
00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:20.000
So actually, when I taught here, I taught in the portables.
00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:20.560
Really?
00:05:20.720 --> 00:05:23.680
Um, and so yes, they've been around for quite some time.
00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:28.800
Um, but with the bringing in the new gym, we definitely need it.
00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:44.160
We have so many teams and so many different things that are um sharing facilities and having limited facilities that we need to make sure that we get that gym so that we can actually have basketball, volleyball, everything that we need because we so often have to share and you have to come in late, you get to come in early.
00:05:44.319 --> 00:05:46.560
So it'll be nice to have that extra facility.
00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:47.360
Absolutely.
00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:50.879
And you get to you get to being able to offer some more sports.
00:05:51.120 --> 00:06:01.040
Um, one of the things that never really took off here uh was sand volleyball that um seems to be more popular with the cats than than the students.
00:06:01.279 --> 00:06:07.040
Uh it never really picked up, but we do hear a lot of student interest around boys' volleyball.
00:06:07.360 --> 00:06:13.839
And um, you know, you you two both being on Stugo, I imagine that the students come to you all the time with some of the things they want you to advocate for.
00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:18.079
Uh, but we hear a lot of interest around boys' volleyball and being able to provide boys' volleyball.
00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:20.800
And then we'd offset that with some bad mitten as well.
00:06:21.040 --> 00:06:25.600
And, you know, what are you what are you hearing from students about us being able to offer more sports?
00:06:25.759 --> 00:06:30.800
Because if we were to build a new gym, that is what would allow for the offering of more sports.
00:06:31.040 --> 00:06:43.040
And it would also be the thing that allows Westview to have a full-size competition gym where you could fit plenty of fans in the stands like the other campuses, as opposed to right now being a little bit more limited with a smaller gym.
00:06:44.319 --> 00:07:07.360
Um, I've heard from multiple students that they want to start new sports and that like the sports that we have right now at the school aren't of their interest and that they can't start the new sports because they don't have a place to go and practice, or um, they're like asking to advocate for new spaces for practicing.
00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:12.240
I see the vision with the sand volleyball, but just we live in Arizona.
00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:14.160
It is it's a hot place, guys.
00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:21.920
Just gonna we should kick the litter box to the curve and get ready for because also having a boys' volleyball team, I think it would also be really, really good and encouraging as well.
00:07:22.160 --> 00:07:26.000
There are some people that maybe are not as athletic for basketball or something, but they're also tall.
00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:27.279
Let them go ahead and do volleyball.
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:28.000
You know what I mean?
00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:41.439
I think like getting rid of the sand volleyball and adding whatever is possible, it'll provide new availabilities for sports and other like new sports or even remaining sports that can, you know, strive and be better.
00:07:41.759 --> 00:07:45.519
Always bringing in the new sports is great, new opportunities for students.
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:50.959
And it gives us an opportunity to be do with StuGo one assembly instead of two or three.
00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:51.680
Right.
00:07:51.920 --> 00:07:53.040
So oh, absolutely.
00:07:53.120 --> 00:07:57.680
That's that's another great point that if you have a full-size competition gym, you're we can actually all be together.
00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:07.920
Uh a couple of the other items on here focus a little bit more on safety, campus safety, student safety.
00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:22.399
Um, and those are, you know, perimeter fencing uh along with uh laser leveling of field so that way athletes when they're running around to catch a fly ball, they're not stepping into a little gopher hole or something and uh twisting an ankle or a knee.
00:08:22.560 --> 00:08:26.560
Um the district has been making uh an extra emphasis on safety.
00:08:26.720 --> 00:08:47.120
I mean, you've probably noticed, you know, this year with the weapons detectors and some of the other investments that we've been making to increase safety, the perimeter fencing um helps also address that because if you have, you know, a single point of entry that you're trying to use for weapons detectors, but you have a fence that's easy to hop over, then it kind of defeats the purpose a little bit.
00:08:47.279 --> 00:08:52.240
Uh, what are some of your thoughts around the district's focus and emphasis on on safety for the campus?
00:08:53.919 --> 00:09:17.200
Um for the fields, um, I know that right now the only good fields are the varsity fields and that JV and whoever has to use the other fields to practice or to go do whatever club or activity that they're doing, they have to be careful wherever they're running or wherever they're walking because there's always different holes or like lumps or stuff that you trip over.
00:09:17.440 --> 00:09:22.320
And it's just like it's it's like you have to be cautious over there.
00:09:23.200 --> 00:09:30.159
I think you made a great point about because our student metal detector system, I won't lie, when we first got introduced to it, I was not confident in that.
00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:33.840
I was like just you know, I was like, you guys can we can hide stuff in other places, you know?
00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:46.559
But I think it was a really good change that we made, but as well, hearing that the minute, like, okay, we have this for it, but then as well, let's go use the gate that is more than available and doesn't have a medical detector provided.
00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:55.519
I think creating a better safety system is perfect for our schools because especially because it's an old school, it's good to have renovations and continue to be renewed.
00:09:56.320 --> 00:10:03.360
Yeah, we definitely need our guardian gates um as another line of defense and to help with our safety.
00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:06.639
I mean, we're doing a lot of good work with the metal detectors.
00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:15.120
It's been fun to be out there with the kids and see them in the morning and and say good morning and, you know, but um the safety is number one priority for us.
00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:21.919
And so we just want to make sure that we get that second line of defense, or maybe even you want to call it our first line of defense, which is the gates.
00:10:22.240 --> 00:10:28.799
So, as we're talking about the exterior of the campus, one of the other things that we've been looking at is weatherization of the campus.
00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:39.200
And just to give you guys a little bit of background on weatherization, essentially what it is is we'll put this tube of water up next to the walls and we're seeing how fast the water penetrates the building.
00:10:39.440 --> 00:10:48.080
And whenever it fails that test, then the state helps provide some funding for then addressing the seal of the buildings.
00:10:48.320 --> 00:10:54.000
Um, we supplement that funding, and then that allows us to repaint the whole school.
00:10:54.159 --> 00:11:02.559
Um, so if you're familiar with Copper Canyon, when it went from purple to now it's all uh uh weathered saddle and mesa tan.
00:11:02.879 --> 00:11:04.559
I know I got to be there to pick out the colors.
00:11:04.639 --> 00:11:06.240
That's why I remember the color names.
00:11:06.399 --> 00:11:11.840
But uh that that was that was because it failed the weatherization test and we're able to go ahead and go back and do it.
00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:29.039
Um, this is an older campus, so we're expecting that we're gonna be in that in that stage soon where we're going back and readdressing um the outside, but it's also a time to to freshen up the campus and throw some school spirit and and redo how the whole exterior of the campus looks.
00:11:29.200 --> 00:11:35.120
What are what are some of your thoughts about a fresh coat of paint all over the exterior of our buildings?
00:11:35.440 --> 00:11:40.480
I think that, and you were here like two, three weeks ago when we did the student luncheon.
00:11:40.559 --> 00:11:44.000
And when you were there and you we told you about your possible our problems and stuff.
00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:46.559
I'm all for repainting this building, guys.
00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:56.399
We we have a nice brick color, but I'm ready for just some new new change and new new exciting new possibilities to have to just re-rent reinovate our school.
00:11:56.480 --> 00:11:57.039
It's exciting.
00:11:57.120 --> 00:11:58.639
I I I'm I I'm all for that.
00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:00.320
Put some school colors into it.
00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:01.440
Yeah, of course.
00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:04.399
We always like that, you know, little new gray, a little blue.
00:12:04.559 --> 00:12:04.720
Right.
00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:06.159
Maybe that's a little over the top, but you know.
00:12:06.320 --> 00:12:07.120
I'm all for the blue, okay.
00:12:08.480 --> 00:12:11.360
But we definitely, I mean, it would be nice to bring it back to life, right?
00:12:11.519 --> 00:12:12.480
You said 1989.
00:12:12.559 --> 00:12:13.440
We've been here for a while.
00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:16.240
It's time to bring it back to life along with the stairs.
00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:20.720
Uh, make sure that they're all beautified, aesthetically pleasing.
00:12:20.879 --> 00:12:21.519
Yes.
00:12:23.120 --> 00:12:24.960
I would love to see the school painted.
00:12:25.039 --> 00:12:30.320
I feel like it'd bring a lot more energy and like bring the school back to life to how it used to be.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:31.120
Yes.
00:12:31.279 --> 00:12:32.960
Definitely make it look new again.
00:12:33.200 --> 00:12:33.679
Yes.
00:12:33.919 --> 00:12:37.039
I mean, just because it's hitting 40 doesn't mean it can't look fabulous.
00:12:37.200 --> 00:12:37.440
40.
00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:39.120
40s, new 20s.
00:12:39.759 --> 00:12:40.320
There you go.
00:12:40.480 --> 00:12:41.200
I like that.
00:12:41.440 --> 00:12:42.159
I like it too.
00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:49.919
Um, one of the other projects that we that we have listed on here is upgrading the performing arts center.
00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:53.440
Um what are your what are your guys' thoughts around the performing arts center?
00:12:53.519 --> 00:12:54.320
Have you have you been in there?
00:12:54.399 --> 00:13:00.799
What do you what do you and you've have you also been to some of the performing arts center at some of our other campuses, especially our newer campuses?
00:13:00.879 --> 00:13:05.519
What are what are some of your thoughts about extra life we could bring into the performing arts center?
00:13:05.840 --> 00:13:07.679
I have been in the performing arts center.
00:13:07.759 --> 00:13:11.039
I actually take a theater class and we're there a lot.
00:13:11.360 --> 00:13:18.879
The pack, it's like it's it's a really nice pack, but there's just like I don't know how I don't know how to describe it.
00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:24.159
It's just with the house, like where the audience sits, like those chairs are really worn out.
00:13:24.320 --> 00:13:27.679
Like if you go look at the back of them, they're all drawn on, they're all beat up.
00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:37.360
And then it's just like just they're all just like um damaged, like people are just like sitting and like kicking them or like doing whatever they want with them.
00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:42.320
As a bystander, I've never really been on the stage because you know, theaters aren't really my thing.
00:13:42.399 --> 00:13:42.960
I'm good off that.
00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:47.360
But like just to sit there and be in the seats, like I said, I've never really noticed the chairs and stuff.
00:13:47.440 --> 00:13:52.240
But if we did upgrade the PAC, just like how you said, I think it'll be a real crowd pleaser.
00:13:52.320 --> 00:13:58.320
And then if we're not only rebuilding the PAC, but also I know there was a lot of technical and audio issues.
00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:00.320
I went to the play last year, I watched it.
00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:01.919
That that could be fixed or something.
00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:16.000
Just having more changes, it'll be better for not only our school, but also for what dance is gonna have to do in the PAC, for what band is gonna have to do in the PAC and theater and all these other up-and-coming clubs and sports, like it could be better for them as well.
00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:18.559
We have a lot of students involved in PVA.
00:14:18.639 --> 00:14:22.000
And as a former PVA teacher, I think it's important that we renovate it.
00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:29.440
You know, I think uh so often we do not just the performances in there, but we do award ceremonies.
00:14:29.600 --> 00:14:31.200
People come in and for do different things.
00:14:31.279 --> 00:14:35.600
We have people that use it for just so such a variety, but it needs to be updated.
00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:40.799
I mean, we've been up there when I'm talking, and all of a sudden you hear nothing or you get so loud.
00:14:40.879 --> 00:14:46.240
Um, so that some of the up upgrades would be nice, just bringing it again, 1989 back to life.
00:14:46.399 --> 00:14:48.240
Let's bring Westview back to life.
00:14:48.480 --> 00:14:49.039
Absolutely.
00:14:49.120 --> 00:14:52.720
And I'll tell you, I've I've been uh all over your guys' PAC.
00:14:52.879 --> 00:14:58.639
Uh uh, you know, your your principal wanted me to go up there and walk on the catwalk that's like all the way up above the stage.
00:14:58.720 --> 00:14:59.840
So I had to go ahead and go do it.
00:14:59.919 --> 00:15:00.720
So I was like, yeah, absolutely.
00:15:00.799 --> 00:15:03.120
I'll go walk up there, walk around out on the catwalk.
00:15:03.279 --> 00:15:07.679
Um, and then also you guys are like the only school I believe that we have an orchestra pit.
00:15:07.919 --> 00:15:08.720
We are, yes.
00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:13.919
And uh it it looks more like storage, but I mean it was an orchestra pit, it was like kind of the concept around there.
00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:28.000
So there's a there's a lot we could do with a with a big upgrade to um be able to look at ways that we could even add more seating and definitely some new seating because after 40 years, uh seats have a hard time holding up uh, you know, and hitting 40 and looking good.
00:15:28.080 --> 00:15:29.200
So definitely some good renovations.
00:15:29.360 --> 00:15:33.759
And we did get to use that orchestra pit last year for the first time in a long time, and it was wonderful.
00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:35.519
What a difference it made for our play.
00:15:35.600 --> 00:15:36.960
I mean, it was great.
00:15:37.200 --> 00:15:37.679
Nice.
00:15:37.840 --> 00:15:38.000
Yeah.
00:15:38.159 --> 00:15:40.240
Yeah, I I I should have came out to see it.
00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:47.440
So a couple of our other projects include uh repairing some steps here around the buildings, along with replacing some elevators.
00:15:47.600 --> 00:15:50.639
What uh what do you guys notice around the elevators and the steps?
00:15:51.039 --> 00:15:54.000
Those steps are really something.
00:15:54.480 --> 00:16:02.559
They um if you go, if you go up the stairs, like you'll see like the stairs, they're like falling down or like they're like dancing in at some point.
00:16:02.720 --> 00:16:07.440
And like some of them are chips, and like I've seen quite a few people fall down them.
00:16:07.679 --> 00:16:10.240
Oh, definitely a safety hazard we need to get addressed.
00:16:10.559 --> 00:16:16.399
Definitely, and then as well for the elevators, I think I remember it was um future freshman night or of some sort.
00:16:16.559 --> 00:16:19.039
And um um, what's it called?
00:16:19.200 --> 00:16:21.840
A parent was going down the elevator and it got stuck halfway.
00:16:21.919 --> 00:16:22.399
And Mr.
00:16:22.559 --> 00:16:24.639
West Westview over here, King Westview.
00:16:24.799 --> 00:16:27.200
He's like freaking out, like super, super worried.
00:16:27.279 --> 00:16:32.399
And it's just getting the elevator face will actually be beneficial as well for people that do have disabilities of such.
00:16:32.720 --> 00:16:34.000
It'll be super helpful.
00:16:34.480 --> 00:16:40.159
We are the second oldest elevator in Arizona that has actually been found out, yes.
00:16:40.399 --> 00:16:42.879
So um, we need new elevators.
00:16:42.960 --> 00:16:47.120
Uh often we have to keep the what is it, 400 is always closed.
00:16:47.279 --> 00:16:49.279
Yeah, um, and they have to go across the bridge.
00:16:49.440 --> 00:16:51.200
So it's definitely something that we need.
00:16:51.279 --> 00:16:55.759
And the the stairs, they look rusted, but they're very steep.
00:16:55.919 --> 00:16:58.320
We could use some we could use some help, Mr.
00:16:58.559 --> 00:16:58.960
Kayas.
00:16:59.279 --> 00:17:00.159
Yes, absolutely.
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:02.159
And I'm I'm hoping the community answers the call.
00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:02.480
Yes.
00:17:02.720 --> 00:17:05.680
We uh we definitely have these on the on the capital improvement list.
00:17:05.839 --> 00:17:14.559
Um, what are some other ideas, some things you haven't seen on the list that you're like we should also be considering, some things that you guys think also need to be addressed here at the campus?
00:17:14.799 --> 00:17:19.839
So I noticed that one that isn't on here, and we've actually talked about it going on three years now.
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:22.319
That is the tennis court lights.
00:17:22.640 --> 00:17:33.200
Uh, it is not only beneficial for tennis, but it's as well, there's been staff in Admin that actually have recorded videos of band playing in the dark because they can't use the football field.
00:17:33.279 --> 00:17:37.920
It's being used by flag football and football where they need to actually use it.
00:17:38.160 --> 00:17:42.319
So that's where they play playing in the dark because they have no light out there in the tennis field.
00:17:42.480 --> 00:17:48.799
As well as soccer plays there for um club sports, what um flag football practices there sometimes.
00:17:48.880 --> 00:17:52.480
It's just it'll be really beneficial to have new lights as well, just in general.
00:17:52.640 --> 00:17:55.039
Like all in all, it's good to have lights there.
00:17:56.079 --> 00:17:57.599
It to go with that.
00:17:57.680 --> 00:17:59.440
I mean, we need lights.
00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:02.640
We right now we're I get to redo that one.
00:18:02.720 --> 00:18:03.200
You're welcome.
00:18:03.440 --> 00:18:04.160
Thank you.
00:18:04.559 --> 00:18:09.359
Um right now we are definitely we working with band with the competition tomorrow.
00:18:09.440 --> 00:18:12.640
We have to rent some lights, making sure that they have somewhere to practice practice.
00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:23.759
Because again, we have limited facilities, so we're always putting somebody somewhere else, whether dance and cheer, have to share the dance room, whether you know, football and um basketball and anybody else.
00:18:23.839 --> 00:18:28.799
I mean, I know they're all at different times, but yet they have practice at the same time.
00:18:28.960 --> 00:18:36.240
So um it's it's difficult to allow them at night, which and it's hot again.
00:18:36.960 --> 00:18:38.720
But to attest to that.
00:18:38.960 --> 00:18:43.920
On another note, um, would be one we did fabulous.
00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:49.440
If you've seen it out here right outside my office, we did turf and a wonderful canopy.
00:18:49.759 --> 00:18:52.559
And it's a lot of students like to eat there, and it's wonderful.
00:18:52.640 --> 00:18:56.400
And I can always see them playing games and having fun and singing and dancing.
00:18:56.480 --> 00:18:58.559
I mean, a lot of TikToks, it's a lot of fun.
00:18:58.720 --> 00:19:01.200
But it would be nice to see that on the rest of our campus.
00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:12.160
I know you have on here that we do want to make sure that we get that renovation in the middle of campus where we get more canopies, we get some greenery so it's not rocks, and we're not doesn't look old and outdated.
00:19:12.240 --> 00:19:16.880
So it'd be nice to have that renovation as well, that college feel, so to speak, right?
00:19:16.960 --> 00:19:19.519
You can eat wherever, have fun, right, chill.
00:19:19.839 --> 00:19:22.000
The beauty of the school is that there's so much to do.
00:19:22.160 --> 00:19:24.960
We have so many clubs and so many sports and activities.
00:19:25.119 --> 00:19:28.960
It's just there's so many possibilities, but so little room to do it.
00:19:29.119 --> 00:19:37.759
So that's where, again, reinnovating and making it bigger for all students around for any club and sport or activity, it'll provide more for them.
00:19:38.400 --> 00:19:39.039
Absolutely.
00:19:39.279 --> 00:19:42.079
I mean, space is always the tightest commodity.
00:19:42.240 --> 00:19:54.240
And so when we see spaces that are being wasted, either because it's just rock and everybody's trying to avoid it or just way too much concrete and not enough green area or not enough shade because it's just directly in the sun.
00:19:54.480 --> 00:20:01.119
Um, it's it's definitely refreshing when we do an investment and then we see how the students are now using that area.
00:20:01.519 --> 00:20:08.000
And we can see that yes, that is why we know it's a wise investment because look at all the stuff they're able to do there and participate there.
00:20:08.079 --> 00:20:11.359
So, yes, the courtyard renovations are are on the list as well.
00:20:11.440 --> 00:20:21.920
Um, looking at different ways that we can try to bring more life in the middle of campus, as opposed to taking our areas that people try to avoid and making them areas that people seek out and want to want to enjoy.
00:20:22.079 --> 00:20:25.200
And it sounds like field space is also um a concern.
00:20:25.279 --> 00:20:28.319
I'd I'd I mean, we'd probably have to look at how we can do it.
00:20:28.400 --> 00:20:41.599
But then if we get to addressing those JV fields, you know, as you mentioned earlier, make them safer fields to use, along with providing additional lighting, then that would also give alternatives for band and some of the others to have space to go practice.
00:20:41.759 --> 00:20:51.279
Um, because I know it's it's more ideal when they can practice on on a surface that's similar to where they're gonna play, which is going to be grass as opposed to some of the hardscape.
00:20:51.759 --> 00:20:55.119
So any other ideas on on different projects we should be looking at?
00:20:55.440 --> 00:21:01.519
That gate and the student parking lot where the door is, I've heard a whole bunch of students complain.
00:21:01.680 --> 00:21:09.759
And especially in the heat, like peak of summer, when you go to open that gate to leave, it burns your hands and like it's super hot.
00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:21.680
So just like finding a way to cover it so the sun's not hitting it directly, like how it is now, because a whole bunch of people either burn their hands with it or it's just it's too hot to touch.
00:21:22.160 --> 00:21:25.279
And so that's when they're touching the crash bar to push the gate open.
00:21:25.839 --> 00:21:26.079
Okay.
00:21:26.559 --> 00:21:26.720
Yes.
00:21:27.359 --> 00:21:28.720
And that would go with our guardian fencing.
00:21:28.960 --> 00:21:32.079
It would help to Yeah, do that with the perimeter fencing improvements.
00:21:34.240 --> 00:21:36.000
Yep, definitely a lot of different things.
00:21:36.079 --> 00:21:48.400
I mean, we are landlocked, so to speak, with uh elementary school across from us and all the houses, but we definitely need to take what we have and kind of regenerate, right?
00:21:48.880 --> 00:21:55.519
Take the time to rebuild because it's been a while and change happens and change is good, but now we need to happen.
00:21:55.759 --> 00:21:57.119
We need it to happen.
00:21:57.599 --> 00:21:58.240
Absolutely.
00:21:58.400 --> 00:22:08.079
Well, this this campus is gonna be a great focus of ours, uh, wanting to bring it back to life as it as it turns 40 and and refresh it and make it make it look brand new again.
00:22:08.319 --> 00:22:09.440
The fabulous 40.
00:22:09.599 --> 00:22:12.480
Fab Fab 40s, 40 being the new 20 and all.
00:22:12.559 --> 00:22:13.839
We've got to make it look 20.
00:22:14.000 --> 00:22:20.400
So uh appreciate you guys coming on to the education exchange to share all those ideas and thoughts with our listeners.

00:00:10.960 --> 00:00:13.519
Hello and welcome to the Education Exchange.
00:00:13.599 --> 00:00:17.359
I'm your host, Superintendent Jeremy Caius here at the Tolson Union High School District.
00:00:17.519 --> 00:00:21.519
And today we're going to talk about some planned Westview facility upgrades.
00:00:21.679 --> 00:00:27.839
And here to tee off this conversation, we have a couple of our members from our student government team, along with the principal of the school.
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:29.519
So I'll allow them to introduce themselves.
00:00:29.760 --> 00:00:30.480
My name's Maida.
00:00:30.640 --> 00:00:31.920
I'm junior class treasury.
00:00:32.079 --> 00:00:33.200
My name's Anna Lisa.
00:00:33.280 --> 00:00:35.119
I'm a student body vice president.
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:39.200
And I'm Natalie Kinones, the proud principal of Westview High School.
00:00:39.600 --> 00:00:40.000
All right.
00:00:40.159 --> 00:00:43.119
So we're we're planning a lot of upgrades here for Westview.
00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:52.719
It is our second oldest campus, so only behind Tullison campus, the original school, but Westview came right along uh almost 40 years ago.
00:00:52.799 --> 00:00:54.719
This campus is almost 40 years old now.
00:00:54.799 --> 00:00:56.000
It's about to hit 40.
00:00:56.159 --> 00:00:59.119
Uh so we have we have a lot of different things that are planned.
00:00:59.280 --> 00:01:01.280
Uh we've started some work here already.
00:01:01.359 --> 00:01:04.719
So we had the uh football field, was upgraded to turf.
00:01:04.879 --> 00:01:06.640
So that was a nice addition.
00:01:06.799 --> 00:01:09.040
Um, but there's still a lot more work to do here.
00:01:09.359 --> 00:01:12.799
Uh it's it's it's gonna be the primary focus for the district for a while.
00:01:12.959 --> 00:01:18.319
Now that we've addressed a lot of the concerns at Tolleson, like we're we're moving towards a lot of the concerns that we have at the Westview campus.
00:01:18.560 --> 00:01:21.359
So get all of your thoughts and opinions on each of those.
00:01:21.519 --> 00:01:32.560
Uh, I want to start first with the projects that were already in the final stages of design and unfortunately got put on pause last year when uh when the bond didn't pass.
00:01:32.640 --> 00:01:37.280
Uh, and and let's address those projects and the needs for those projects and get your thoughts around that.
00:01:37.439 --> 00:01:41.760
Uh so the first ones we'll talk about is um the new ROTC building.
00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:49.519
So uh our ROTC program unfortunately doesn't have the uh proper distance inside their current building to qualify for marksmanship.
00:01:49.599 --> 00:01:51.359
And they've pointed out other concerns in the past.
00:01:51.439 --> 00:01:57.359
In fact, we've talked about it in Stugo before uh in in recent years about some of the needs of ROTC.
00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:02.000
What are what are some of your thoughts around creating a new ROTC building here on the campus?
00:02:02.319 --> 00:02:04.799
I was in ROTC for two years, actually.
00:02:04.879 --> 00:02:10.240
And so we when we did do marksmanship, we did it inside of a different, we had like two classrooms and they're joined together.
00:02:10.400 --> 00:02:13.759
We did it in one classroom, and you gotta say, you know, it is a little get a little bit squish.
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:14.800
And then I've also heard from Mr.
00:02:14.879 --> 00:02:22.960
Cardoza that you guys are that a part of like the writing that um a markmanship room is supposed to be provided.
00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:26.719
So I think it is really smart of us to actually continue doing that.
00:02:27.280 --> 00:02:29.680
And then they they do a wonderful job for our campus.
00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:31.520
They bring a lot of pride to Westview.
00:02:31.680 --> 00:02:38.479
So in order to make sure that we continue to grow that program, we need to make sure that we bring them the building that they need and the facilities that they need.
00:02:39.199 --> 00:02:46.240
And I gotta say, it's great, it's great talking about the ROTC program on a day when you guys are celebrating a camo day and you're all in camouflage.
00:02:46.319 --> 00:02:49.439
Like it's like perfect to start start the conversation there.
00:02:49.680 --> 00:03:01.919
Um a couple of the other uh new additions are um a new field house out by uh by your football field that would have you know concessions and and new restrooms in it.
00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:05.199
Uh what are some of your thoughts around you know seeing that new addition?
00:03:05.280 --> 00:03:09.120
Like what have you what have you noticed being out around football or anything else?
00:03:09.439 --> 00:03:15.840
The restrooms are the restrooms that we use at the football field are the ones connected to the current RTC building.
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:20.240
And those they get either really hot or they get really packed easily.
00:03:20.319 --> 00:03:24.080
And there's like usually huge line just to wait to go use the bathroom.
00:03:25.199 --> 00:03:28.879
And then it's also just like again, for student government, our biggest thing is school spirit.
00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:35.919
So we want to see our school constantly getting better and seeing how else that we as students as well, but how the school can get better as well.
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:43.199
So even seeing not only the restrooms, but also what we do for concession stands as well, it's it's a huge upgrade, which is I'm really excited for it.
00:03:43.439 --> 00:03:47.840
Always a representation of the school, and it would be nice for the field house to represent us as well.
00:03:48.080 --> 00:03:55.840
So you have the other side, the uh visitor side, where of course they use the have to use the porta potties because we don't have bathrooms on that side.
00:03:55.919 --> 00:03:56.639
And it's separate.
00:03:56.719 --> 00:03:59.360
This is an older school, so we're limited on the space.
00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:02.560
So it would be nice to give both field houses.
00:04:02.879 --> 00:04:03.439
Oh, absolutely.
00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:07.520
And definitely not aesthetically pleasing to see porta potties out at your football game.
00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:09.919
So you would we would love to get away from that.
00:04:10.159 --> 00:04:12.400
Uh, let's talk about some of your other projects.
00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:20.480
Uh so one of them is is uh the demoing of the portable buildings to make way for a new gymnasium.
00:04:20.639 --> 00:04:24.160
Uh, we'll focus first on the on the demoing of the portable buildings.
00:04:24.319 --> 00:04:28.000
Uh, several years ago, those were actually scheduled to be demo.
00:04:28.160 --> 00:04:40.879
It was literally the day before the demolition began that our our principal of DLA asked, could they use those portables as opposed to uh you know being over at the Tolson campus?
00:04:41.040 --> 00:04:42.560
And and we granted that request.
00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:44.160
We stopped the demolition.
00:04:44.399 --> 00:04:57.680
Um, but now we're we're looking at getting back to demoing uh those portables, especially since DLA is about to have a new home uh over by the district office in the new building over uh just off the 101.
00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:00.240
So, what are your thoughts around the portables?
00:05:00.399 --> 00:05:07.040
So that it's a 40-year-old campus, which means uh the portables that were built to last for 10 years have we've gotten more than 10 years out of them.
00:05:07.199 --> 00:05:09.360
Uh, have you guys been in those portable buildings before?
00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:12.879
Have you ever, you know, stepped inside them and seen what it's like in there?
00:05:13.120 --> 00:05:13.680
I have not.
00:05:13.920 --> 00:05:14.560
All my four years.
00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:16.399
I don't think I've ever really been inside portable.
00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:17.439
They just pass by them, you know.
00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:20.000
So actually, when I taught here, I taught in the portables.
00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:20.560
Really?
00:05:20.720 --> 00:05:23.680
Um, and so yes, they've been around for quite some time.
00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:28.800
Um, but with the bringing in the new gym, we definitely need it.
00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:44.160
We have so many teams and so many different things that are um sharing facilities and having limited facilities that we need to make sure that we get that gym so that we can actually have basketball, volleyball, everything that we need because we so often have to share and you have to come in late, you get to come in early.
00:05:44.319 --> 00:05:46.560
So it'll be nice to have that extra facility.
00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:47.360
Absolutely.
00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:50.879
And you get to you get to being able to offer some more sports.
00:05:51.120 --> 00:06:01.040
Um, one of the things that never really took off here uh was sand volleyball that um seems to be more popular with the cats than than the students.
00:06:01.279 --> 00:06:07.040
Uh it never really picked up, but we do hear a lot of student interest around boys' volleyball.
00:06:07.360 --> 00:06:13.839
And um, you know, you you two both being on Stugo, I imagine that the students come to you all the time with some of the things they want you to advocate for.
00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:18.079
Uh, but we hear a lot of interest around boys' volleyball and being able to provide boys' volleyball.
00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:20.800
And then we'd offset that with some bad mitten as well.
00:06:21.040 --> 00:06:25.600
And, you know, what are you what are you hearing from students about us being able to offer more sports?
00:06:25.759 --> 00:06:30.800
Because if we were to build a new gym, that is what would allow for the offering of more sports.
00:06:31.040 --> 00:06:43.040
And it would also be the thing that allows Westview to have a full-size competition gym where you could fit plenty of fans in the stands like the other campuses, as opposed to right now being a little bit more limited with a smaller gym.
00:06:44.319 --> 00:07:07.360
Um, I've heard from multiple students that they want to start new sports and that like the sports that we have right now at the school aren't of their interest and that they can't start the new sports because they don't have a place to go and practice, or um, they're like asking to advocate for new spaces for practicing.
00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:12.240
I see the vision with the sand volleyball, but just we live in Arizona.
00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:14.160
It is it's a hot place, guys.
00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:21.920
Just gonna we should kick the litter box to the curve and get ready for because also having a boys' volleyball team, I think it would also be really, really good and encouraging as well.
00:07:22.160 --> 00:07:26.000
There are some people that maybe are not as athletic for basketball or something, but they're also tall.
00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:27.279
Let them go ahead and do volleyball.
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:28.000
You know what I mean?
00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:41.439
I think like getting rid of the sand volleyball and adding whatever is possible, it'll provide new availabilities for sports and other like new sports or even remaining sports that can, you know, strive and be better.
00:07:41.759 --> 00:07:45.519
Always bringing in the new sports is great, new opportunities for students.
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:50.959
And it gives us an opportunity to be do with StuGo one assembly instead of two or three.
00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:51.680
Right.
00:07:51.920 --> 00:07:53.040
So oh, absolutely.
00:07:53.120 --> 00:07:57.680
That's that's another great point that if you have a full-size competition gym, you're we can actually all be together.
00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:07.920
Uh a couple of the other items on here focus a little bit more on safety, campus safety, student safety.
00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:22.399
Um, and those are, you know, perimeter fencing uh along with uh laser leveling of field so that way athletes when they're running around to catch a fly ball, they're not stepping into a little gopher hole or something and uh twisting an ankle or a knee.
00:08:22.560 --> 00:08:26.560
Um the district has been making uh an extra emphasis on safety.
00:08:26.720 --> 00:08:47.120
00:08:47.279 --> 00:08:52.240
Uh, what are some of your thoughts around the district's focus and emphasis on on safety for the campus?
00:08:53.919 --> 00:09:17.200
00:09:17.440 --> 00:09:22.320
And it's just like it's it's like you have to be cautious over there.
00:09:23.200 --> 00:09:30.159
I think you made a great point about because our student metal detector system, I won't lie, when we first got introduced to it, I was not confident in that.
00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:33.840
I was like just you know, I was like, you guys can we can hide stuff in other places, you know?
00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:46.559
But I think it was a really good change that we made, but as well, hearing that the minute, like, okay, we have this for it, but then as well, let's go use the gate that is more than available and doesn't have a medical detector provided.
00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:55.519
I think creating a better safety system is perfect for our schools because especially because it's an old school, it's good to have renovations and continue to be renewed.
00:09:56.320 --> 00:10:03.360
Yeah, we definitely need our guardian gates um as another line of defense and to help with our safety.
00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:06.639
I mean, we're doing a lot of good work with the metal detectors.
00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:15.120
It's been fun to be out there with the kids and see them in the morning and and say good morning and, you know, but um the safety is number one priority for us.
00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:21.919
And so we just want to make sure that we get that second line of defense, or maybe even you want to call it our first line of defense, which is the gates.
00:10:22.240 --> 00:10:28.799
So, as we're talking about the exterior of the campus, one of the other things that we've been looking at is weatherization of the campus.
00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:39.200
And just to give you guys a little bit of background on weatherization, essentially what it is is we'll put this tube of water up next to the walls and we're seeing how fast the water penetrates the building.
00:10:39.440 --> 00:10:48.080
And whenever it fails that test, then the state helps provide some funding for then addressing the seal of the buildings.
00:10:48.320 --> 00:10:54.000
Um, we supplement that funding, and then that allows us to repaint the whole school.
00:10:54.159 --> 00:11:02.559
Um, so if you're familiar with Copper Canyon, when it went from purple to now it's all uh uh weathered saddle and mesa tan.
00:11:02.879 --> 00:11:04.559
I know I got to be there to pick out the colors.
00:11:04.639 --> 00:11:06.240
That's why I remember the color names.
00:11:06.399 --> 00:11:11.840
But uh that that was that was because it failed the weatherization test and we're able to go ahead and go back and do it.
00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:29.039
Um, this is an older campus, so we're expecting that we're gonna be in that in that stage soon where we're going back and readdressing um the outside, but it's also a time to to freshen up the campus and throw some school spirit and and redo how the whole exterior of the campus looks.
00:11:29.200 --> 00:11:35.120
What are what are some of your thoughts about a fresh coat of paint all over the exterior of our buildings?
00:11:35.440 --> 00:11:40.480
I think that, and you were here like two, three weeks ago when we did the student luncheon.
00:11:40.559 --> 00:11:44.000
And when you were there and you we told you about your possible our problems and stuff.
00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:46.559
I'm all for repainting this building, guys.
00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:56.399
We we have a nice brick color, but I'm ready for just some new new change and new new exciting new possibilities to have to just re-rent reinovate our school.
00:11:56.480 --> 00:11:57.039
It's exciting.
00:11:57.120 --> 00:11:58.639
I I I'm I I'm all for that.
00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:00.320
Put some school colors into it.
00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:01.440
Yeah, of course.
00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:04.399
We always like that, you know, little new gray, a little blue.
00:12:04.559 --> 00:12:04.720
Right.
00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:06.159
Maybe that's a little over the top, but you know.
00:12:06.320 --> 00:12:07.120
I'm all for the blue, okay.
00:12:08.480 --> 00:12:11.360
But we definitely, I mean, it would be nice to bring it back to life, right?
00:12:11.519 --> 00:12:12.480
You said 1989.
00:12:12.559 --> 00:12:13.440
We've been here for a while.
00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:16.240
It's time to bring it back to life along with the stairs.
00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:20.720
Uh, make sure that they're all beautified, aesthetically pleasing.
00:12:20.879 --> 00:12:21.519
Yes.
00:12:23.120 --> 00:12:24.960
I would love to see the school painted.
00:12:25.039 --> 00:12:30.320
I feel like it'd bring a lot more energy and like bring the school back to life to how it used to be.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:31.120
Yes.
00:12:31.279 --> 00:12:32.960
Definitely make it look new again.
00:12:33.200 --> 00:12:33.679
Yes.
00:12:33.919 --> 00:12:37.039
I mean, just because it's hitting 40 doesn't mean it can't look fabulous.
00:12:37.200 --> 00:12:37.440
40.
00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:39.120
40s, new 20s.
00:12:39.759 --> 00:12:40.320
There you go.
00:12:40.480 --> 00:12:41.200
I like that.
00:12:41.440 --> 00:12:42.159
I like it too.
00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:49.919
Um, one of the other projects that we that we have listed on here is upgrading the performing arts center.
00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:53.440
Um what are your what are your guys' thoughts around the performing arts center?
00:12:53.519 --> 00:12:54.320
Have you have you been in there?
00:12:54.399 --> 00:13:00.799
What do you what do you and you've have you also been to some of the performing arts center at some of our other campuses, especially our newer campuses?
00:13:00.879 --> 00:13:05.519
What are what are some of your thoughts about extra life we could bring into the performing arts center?
00:13:05.840 --> 00:13:07.679
I have been in the performing arts center.
00:13:07.759 --> 00:13:11.039
I actually take a theater class and we're there a lot.
00:13:11.360 --> 00:13:18.879
The pack, it's like it's it's a really nice pack, but there's just like I don't know how I don't know how to describe it.
00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:24.159
It's just with the house, like where the audience sits, like those chairs are really worn out.
00:13:24.320 --> 00:13:27.679
Like if you go look at the back of them, they're all drawn on, they're all beat up.
00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:37.360
And then it's just like just they're all just like um damaged, like people are just like sitting and like kicking them or like doing whatever they want with them.
00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:42.320
As a bystander, I've never really been on the stage because you know, theaters aren't really my thing.
00:13:42.399 --> 00:13:42.960
I'm good off that.
00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:47.360
But like just to sit there and be in the seats, like I said, I've never really noticed the chairs and stuff.
00:13:47.440 --> 00:13:52.240
But if we did upgrade the PAC, just like how you said, I think it'll be a real crowd pleaser.
00:13:52.320 --> 00:13:58.320
And then if we're not only rebuilding the PAC, but also I know there was a lot of technical and audio issues.
00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:00.320
I went to the play last year, I watched it.
00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:01.919
That that could be fixed or something.
00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:16.000
Just having more changes, it'll be better for not only our school, but also for what dance is gonna have to do in the PAC, for what band is gonna have to do in the PAC and theater and all these other up-and-coming clubs and sports, like it could be better for them as well.
00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:18.559
We have a lot of students involved in PVA.
00:14:18.639 --> 00:14:22.000
And as a former PVA teacher, I think it's important that we renovate it.
00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:29.440
You know, I think uh so often we do not just the performances in there, but we do award ceremonies.
00:14:29.600 --> 00:14:31.200
People come in and for do different things.
00:14:31.279 --> 00:14:35.600
We have people that use it for just so such a variety, but it needs to be updated.
00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:40.799
I mean, we've been up there when I'm talking, and all of a sudden you hear nothing or you get so loud.
00:14:40.879 --> 00:14:46.240
Um, so that some of the up upgrades would be nice, just bringing it again, 1989 back to life.
00:14:46.399 --> 00:14:48.240
Let's bring Westview back to life.
00:14:48.480 --> 00:14:49.039
Absolutely.
00:14:49.120 --> 00:14:52.720
And I'll tell you, I've I've been uh all over your guys' PAC.
00:14:52.879 --> 00:14:58.639
Uh uh, you know, your your principal wanted me to go up there and walk on the catwalk that's like all the way up above the stage.
00:14:58.720 --> 00:14:59.840
So I had to go ahead and go do it.
00:14:59.919 --> 00:15:00.720
So I was like, yeah, absolutely.
00:15:00.799 --> 00:15:03.120
I'll go walk up there, walk around out on the catwalk.
00:15:03.279 --> 00:15:07.679
Um, and then also you guys are like the only school I believe that we have an orchestra pit.
00:15:07.919 --> 00:15:08.720
We are, yes.
00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:13.919
And uh it it looks more like storage, but I mean it was an orchestra pit, it was like kind of the concept around there.
00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:28.000
So there's a there's a lot we could do with a with a big upgrade to um be able to look at ways that we could even add more seating and definitely some new seating because after 40 years, uh seats have a hard time holding up uh, you know, and hitting 40 and looking good.
00:15:28.080 --> 00:15:29.200
So definitely some good renovations.
00:15:29.360 --> 00:15:33.759
And we did get to use that orchestra pit last year for the first time in a long time, and it was wonderful.
00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:35.519
What a difference it made for our play.
00:15:35.600 --> 00:15:36.960
I mean, it was great.
00:15:37.200 --> 00:15:37.679
Nice.
00:15:37.840 --> 00:15:38.000
Yeah.
00:15:38.159 --> 00:15:40.240
Yeah, I I I should have came out to see it.
00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:47.440
So a couple of our other projects include uh repairing some steps here around the buildings, along with replacing some elevators.
00:15:47.600 --> 00:15:50.639
What uh what do you guys notice around the elevators and the steps?
00:15:51.039 --> 00:15:54.000
Those steps are really something.
00:15:54.480 --> 00:16:02.559
They um if you go, if you go up the stairs, like you'll see like the stairs, they're like falling down or like they're like dancing in at some point.
00:16:02.720 --> 00:16:07.440
And like some of them are chips, and like I've seen quite a few people fall down them.
00:16:07.679 --> 00:16:10.240
Oh, definitely a safety hazard we need to get addressed.
00:16:10.559 --> 00:16:16.399
Definitely, and then as well for the elevators, I think I remember it was um future freshman night or of some sort.
00:16:16.559 --> 00:16:19.039
And um um, what's it called?
00:16:19.200 --> 00:16:21.840
A parent was going down the elevator and it got stuck halfway.
00:16:21.919 --> 00:16:22.399
And Mr.
00:16:22.559 --> 00:16:24.639
West Westview over here, King Westview.
00:16:24.799 --> 00:16:27.200
He's like freaking out, like super, super worried.
00:16:27.279 --> 00:16:32.399
And it's just getting the elevator face will actually be beneficial as well for people that do have disabilities of such.
00:16:32.720 --> 00:16:34.000
It'll be super helpful.
00:16:34.480 --> 00:16:40.159
We are the second oldest elevator in Arizona that has actually been found out, yes.
00:16:40.399 --> 00:16:42.879
So um, we need new elevators.
00:16:42.960 --> 00:16:47.120
Uh often we have to keep the what is it, 400 is always closed.
00:16:47.279 --> 00:16:49.279
Yeah, um, and they have to go across the bridge.
00:16:49.440 --> 00:16:51.200
So it's definitely something that we need.
00:16:51.279 --> 00:16:55.759
And the the stairs, they look rusted, but they're very steep.
00:16:55.919 --> 00:16:58.320
We could use some we could use some help, Mr.
00:16:58.559 --> 00:16:58.960
Kayas.
00:16:59.279 --> 00:17:00.159
Yes, absolutely.
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:02.159
And I'm I'm hoping the community answers the call.
00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:02.480
Yes.
00:17:02.720 --> 00:17:05.680
We uh we definitely have these on the on the capital improvement list.
00:17:05.839 --> 00:17:14.559
Um, what are some other ideas, some things you haven't seen on the list that you're like we should also be considering, some things that you guys think also need to be addressed here at the campus?
00:17:14.799 --> 00:17:19.839
So I noticed that one that isn't on here, and we've actually talked about it going on three years now.
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:22.319
That is the tennis court lights.
00:17:22.640 --> 00:17:33.200
Uh, it is not only beneficial for tennis, but it's as well, there's been staff in Admin that actually have recorded videos of band playing in the dark because they can't use the football field.
00:17:33.279 --> 00:17:37.920
It's being used by flag football and football where they need to actually use it.
00:17:38.160 --> 00:17:42.319
So that's where they play playing in the dark because they have no light out there in the tennis field.
00:17:42.480 --> 00:17:48.799
As well as soccer plays there for um club sports, what um flag football practices there sometimes.
00:17:48.880 --> 00:17:52.480
It's just it'll be really beneficial to have new lights as well, just in general.
00:17:52.640 --> 00:17:55.039
Like all in all, it's good to have lights there.
00:17:56.079 --> 00:17:57.599
It to go with that.
00:17:57.680 --> 00:17:59.440
I mean, we need lights.
00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:02.640
We right now we're I get to redo that one.
00:18:02.720 --> 00:18:03.200
You're welcome.
00:18:03.440 --> 00:18:04.160
Thank you.
00:18:04.559 --> 00:18:09.359
Um right now we are definitely we working with band with the competition tomorrow.
00:18:09.440 --> 00:18:12.640
We have to rent some lights, making sure that they have somewhere to practice practice.
00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:23.759
Because again, we have limited facilities, so we're always putting somebody somewhere else, whether dance and cheer, have to share the dance room, whether you know, football and um basketball and anybody else.
00:18:23.839 --> 00:18:28.799
I mean, I know they're all at different times, but yet they have practice at the same time.
00:18:28.960 --> 00:18:36.240
So um it's it's difficult to allow them at night, which and it's hot again.
00:18:36.960 --> 00:18:38.720
But to attest to that.
00:18:38.960 --> 00:18:43.920
On another note, um, would be one we did fabulous.
00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:49.440
If you've seen it out here right outside my office, we did turf and a wonderful canopy.
00:18:49.759 --> 00:18:52.559
And it's a lot of students like to eat there, and it's wonderful.
00:18:52.640 --> 00:18:56.400
And I can always see them playing games and having fun and singing and dancing.
00:18:56.480 --> 00:18:58.559
I mean, a lot of TikToks, it's a lot of fun.
00:18:58.720 --> 00:19:01.200
But it would be nice to see that on the rest of our campus.
00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:12.160
I know you have on here that we do want to make sure that we get that renovation in the middle of campus where we get more canopies, we get some greenery so it's not rocks, and we're not doesn't look old and outdated.
00:19:12.240 --> 00:19:16.880
So it'd be nice to have that renovation as well, that college feel, so to speak, right?
00:19:16.960 --> 00:19:19.519
You can eat wherever, have fun, right, chill.
00:19:19.839 --> 00:19:22.000
The beauty of the school is that there's so much to do.
00:19:22.160 --> 00:19:24.960
We have so many clubs and so many sports and activities.
00:19:25.119 --> 00:19:28.960
It's just there's so many possibilities, but so little room to do it.
00:19:29.119 --> 00:19:37.759
So that's where, again, reinnovating and making it bigger for all students around for any club and sport or activity, it'll provide more for them.
00:19:38.400 --> 00:19:39.039
Absolutely.
00:19:39.279 --> 00:19:42.079
I mean, space is always the tightest commodity.
00:19:42.240 --> 00:19:54.240
And so when we see spaces that are being wasted, either because it's just rock and everybody's trying to avoid it or just way too much concrete and not enough green area or not enough shade because it's just directly in the sun.
00:19:54.480 --> 00:20:01.119
Um, it's it's definitely refreshing when we do an investment and then we see how the students are now using that area.
00:20:01.519 --> 00:20:08.000
And we can see that yes, that is why we know it's a wise investment because look at all the stuff they're able to do there and participate there.
00:20:08.079 --> 00:20:11.359
So, yes, the courtyard renovations are are on the list as well.
00:20:11.440 --> 00:20:21.920
Um, looking at different ways that we can try to bring more life in the middle of campus, as opposed to taking our areas that people try to avoid and making them areas that people seek out and want to want to enjoy.
00:20:22.079 --> 00:20:25.200
And it sounds like field space is also um a concern.
00:20:25.279 --> 00:20:28.319
I'd I'd I mean, we'd probably have to look at how we can do it.
00:20:28.400 --> 00:20:41.599
But then if we get to addressing those JV fields, you know, as you mentioned earlier, make them safer fields to use, along with providing additional lighting, then that would also give alternatives for band and some of the others to have space to go practice.
00:20:41.759 --> 00:20:51.279
Um, because I know it's it's more ideal when they can practice on on a surface that's similar to where they're gonna play, which is going to be grass as opposed to some of the hardscape.
00:20:51.759 --> 00:20:55.119
So any other ideas on on different projects we should be looking at?
00:20:55.440 --> 00:21:01.519
That gate and the student parking lot where the door is, I've heard a whole bunch of students complain.
00:21:01.680 --> 00:21:09.759
And especially in the heat, like peak of summer, when you go to open that gate to leave, it burns your hands and like it's super hot.
00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:21.680
So just like finding a way to cover it so the sun's not hitting it directly, like how it is now, because a whole bunch of people either burn their hands with it or it's just it's too hot to touch.
00:21:22.160 --> 00:21:25.279
And so that's when they're touching the crash bar to push the gate open.
00:21:25.839 --> 00:21:26.079
Okay.
00:21:26.559 --> 00:21:26.720
Yes.
00:21:27.359 --> 00:21:28.720
And that would go with our guardian fencing.
00:21:28.960 --> 00:21:32.079
It would help to Yeah, do that with the perimeter fencing improvements.
00:21:34.240 --> 00:21:36.000
Yep, definitely a lot of different things.
00:21:36.079 --> 00:21:48.400
I mean, we are landlocked, so to speak, with uh elementary school across from us and all the houses, but we definitely need to take what we have and kind of regenerate, right?
00:21:48.880 --> 00:21:55.519
Take the time to rebuild because it's been a while and change happens and change is good, but now we need to happen.
00:21:55.759 --> 00:21:57.119
We need it to happen.
00:21:57.599 --> 00:21:58.240
Absolutely.
00:21:58.400 --> 00:22:08.079
Well, this this campus is gonna be a great focus of ours, uh, wanting to bring it back to life as it as it turns 40 and and refresh it and make it make it look brand new again.
00:22:08.319 --> 00:22:09.440
The fabulous 40.
00:22:09.599 --> 00:22:12.480
Fab Fab 40s, 40 being the new 20 and all.
00:22:12.559 --> 00:22:13.839
We've got to make it look 20.
