What if the Apostle Peter has played a far greater role in shaping Christian theology than many Christians realize?
New Testament scholar Dr. Gene Green joins the Determined Truth Podcast to explore the theology of Peter and the message of 1 Peter. Rather than seeing Peter merely as the impulsive disciple who denied Jesus and was later restored, Dr. Green argues that Peter deserves to be recovered as one of the foundational theological voices of the early church.
We explore Peter's possible influence behind the Gospel of Mark, his relationship to Paul, his leadership in the early church, and his crucial role in opening the gospel to the Gentiles.
Then we turn specifically to 1 Peter and its message for Christians facing suffering, exclusion, and social pressure. What did it mean for first-century Christians to abandon the religious expectations of their families and communities? How does Peter tell Christians to respond when they are marginalized or mistreated?
And what does Peter's vision of the church mean for us today?
Our conversation examines some difficult—and highly relevant—questions:
Why has Protestant theology often emphasized Paul while overlooking Peter?
Was Peter a foundational source for early Christian theology?
What does 1 Peter teach about suffering?
Why are Christian identity and community so important to Peter?
What does Peter mean by calling Christians a “royal priesthood” and “holy nation”?
How should Christians understand the household instructions of 1 Peter 3?
Does the Bible endorse hierarchical relationships between men and women?
What can the church's rejection of slavery teach us about interpreting difficult biblical texts?
What is the difference between Christian unity and uniformity?
How should Christians respond to political power and cultural division?
What does it mean for the church to confront evil by doing good?
Dr. Green argues that Peter presents a vision of the church that crosses ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender boundaries. Rather than pursuing domination or political power, Christians are called to become a community shaped by Christ, the cross, hospitality, love, and doing good—even toward those who oppose them.
As Dr. Green puts it, Peter may have been the “lost boy of Christian theology,” but when we look closely, we discover that he has been sitting at the head of the theological table all along.
Join us as we rediscover the Apostle Peter and ask what his theology means for the church today.
Determined Truth exists to equip the church to be the church.
