00:00:34
Speaker 3: Where is here? It's the Minnesota Vikings.
00:00:38
Speaker 2: Foundation charity golf event out at the Middles at Mystic Lake.
00:00:41
Speaker 3: We're now in the first tea box. We're awaiting the arrival.
00:00:44
Speaker 2: Of one Randall McDaniel, a legendary offensive lineman and actions of the Vikings National Football League. He's out here playing. He's gonna chat with us for a little bit. First tea box.
00:00:58
Speaker 3: Where his team stands. I don't know. I don't know if they're doing a standings thing.
00:01:01
Speaker 2: Here, but uh, you know, it's really not tend to be. It's it's not if you win or lose, it's how far.
00:01:07
Speaker 3: Do you drive the golf ball.
00:01:09
Speaker 2: Really, that's yeah, everybody's just trying to That's what scrambles are about. Swing as hard as you possibly can. You know, I've never been able to hit the ball very hard. When I played in these scrambles. Most of the time I wouldn't even get off the cart. I mean, if you're playing with somebody that hits it to eighty, well, I mean you could say for fun, but I play golf every day. I'm not gonna sit and try to rip one and hit it two point thirty when we already got one out there dead center at two eighty two ninety.
00:01:34
Speaker 4: Every time we did the media event, it was we would just take Greg Coleman's drive.
00:01:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know what we got.
00:01:39
Speaker 4: We got the uh get away from the motor.
00:01:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, let's get we have the driver. Let's go to the back of the tea box there.
00:01:46
Speaker 2: Then yeah, because they've got Victor of the Viking here, his name is tiny. Now he got Victor got cut and they've got the Honda. What would you call that? That said blows air, blows hot air, it's rosen, it's it's there, and then it's what it's Yeah, it's why can't Yeah, I go, why can't I think of the name of what it is? Air compressor? And the air compressor is putting in. So now we're gonna talk to Oh, this is way better. We get away from the air compressor and we'll talk to Randall McDaniel.
00:02:14
Speaker 3: Hey, thanks, thanks for driving by.
00:02:16
Speaker 2: We do appreciate it. Who watch out there? Signal your lane changes?
00:02:21
Speaker 4: No, you're good? Oh music? You got sunglasses?
00:02:25
Speaker 3: Yeah?
00:02:26
Speaker 2: Oh, my boys got a pair of those too, He says, it's the greatest thing.
00:02:28
Speaker 3: He goes running with him.
00:02:29
Speaker 2: Let's put on your headst and talk to uh Randam McDaniel. So you've got the kind of sunglasses that they're high tech and they got a bluetooth.
00:02:37
Speaker 3: In them, so you can listen to music.
00:02:38
Speaker 5: I can listen to music. I can take pictures that can do video, that can do slow mold of my golf swing. I got it all.
00:02:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, And I bet do you swing really fast?
00:02:45
Speaker 2: And you need to slow it down because a lot of the big guys will go after that ball.
00:02:48
Speaker 5: I do need to slow it down. Yeah, they's been a good day, and I say that it'll probably go to ship down. Yeah, yeah, but no it Yeah, I gotta always remind myself temple. Yeah, m that whole thing. Yeah.
00:03:01
Speaker 3: Do you play a lot of golf?
00:03:02
Speaker 5: I tried?
00:03:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I see you remember over at the Royal Club. I am yeah, I am too. I see your locker right there by.
00:03:08
Speaker 5: Mind, I haven't made it out as much, so it's a little bit of a drive for me.
00:03:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, I get that.
00:03:12
Speaker 5: But yeah, I've been I've been out of state more. I was in Florida. I did a edit h to Florida Swing. Yeah, so I got to play TPC Sawgrass and although I snuck out to PJA National, did seminole my bucket list and yeah, so I'm trying.
00:03:28
Speaker 3: Seminoles consider one of the best golf courses in the wood.
00:03:31
Speaker 5: Beautiful walk, Yeah, good beautiful.
00:03:33
Speaker 3: Walk, A good walk spoiled is what some people would call it.
00:03:36
Speaker 5: Yeah, have golf got in the way?
00:03:37
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right.
00:03:38
Speaker 2: When you played uh TPC Sawgrass. How did you do on island hole number seventeen parted?
00:03:43
Speaker 3: Did you really? It's a green? Good for you?
00:03:45
Speaker 5: But if you asked me that last year, I would have coached I hit the green. We'll leave it at that.
00:03:50
Speaker 3: Yeah, are you still teaching school?
00:03:52
Speaker 5: No, retired?
00:03:53
Speaker 3: You are retired.
00:03:53
Speaker 5: I'm officially retired. U doing a little bit of, you know, a little everything kind of yeah.
00:04:00
Speaker 3: Doing a little travel and playing a little golf too.
00:04:02
Speaker 5: Trying to play more golf, but I don't know, if you know, I have one more year that I'm on the CFP committee, so this is my last year doing that, So once that's done, I'll be truly truly retired around Do you.
00:04:14
Speaker 2: Have any plans there? People always say, well, if you're retired, you need things to do. Are you gonna keep how are you going to keep yourself busy?
00:04:19
Speaker 5: Hopefully my wife will let me sneak out of golf every day, but I know that's not going to happen. But we still we still do charity work and stuff, so nothing's changed. And I still sneak out to the school every now and then the reading books and stuff. But I was hoping just to get a little more golf in.
00:04:34
Speaker 4: You miss you missed football at all?
00:04:36
Speaker 5: I don't miss it. I don't miss the body hurting all the time. It hurts enough it's been playing football. But what I missed about football is just that time in the locker room with the guys, right, all those linemen, all the linemen hanging out and stuff, but missing those. I was just on the phone with Zimmerman the other day and so catching up with him. I was talking to Todd the day before that. So all the linemen that I've we never played together, we still we still talk, keep in touch.
00:05:02
Speaker 2: And when you talk to you guys, talk football, reminisce about the good old days, or do you just talk about everyday life.
00:05:07
Speaker 5: We talk about every day, talk about the grandkids and how their kids are doing, and with the grand kids and this just everyday life. You know, it's no fun. It's it's tough going old.
00:05:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, trust me, trust me, I'm there with you. I think I got you by a few years too. How closely do you still follow I always ask players, do you still follow the NFL closely? Do you watch like every Sunday watch the vikings or how do you approach that staying in Chuche with football.
00:05:33
Speaker 5: These last couple of years, I haven't watched as much. I've gone to some of the games, but like I said, being on the CFP committee, I watched nothing but college football doing the job right, And then Sunday, you know, I'm actually flying down to Dallas to do all that for the rankings, So I don't watch as much as I probably should. Yeah, like I said, once this year is done, i'll get back into it. But yeah, I don't. I don't watch close enough to give a great opinion unless you ask me to watch something, right, Yeah, if you ask me to watch it, then I'm gonna I'll watch it, and either you're gonna like my opinion or you're not.
00:06:07
Speaker 2: Well, that's why I always tell people too, if there's something you've done for a living for a long long.
00:06:11
Speaker 3: Time, you don't do it anymore. Some they just you just back away for a little bit.
00:06:14
Speaker 2: Like if a guy's a plumber, I don't think he goes home and starts working on his turlet.
00:06:17
Speaker 3: All right, he's gonna do it.
00:06:19
Speaker 5: I mean, it's something that you never forget though you know what to look for, you know what you expect. The expectation is this. So when they do ask me to come out, but uh, most of it is coming out doing stuff in the community. So when they asked me to do that, I will come out and get that that.
00:06:32
Speaker 4: As someone who's on the CFP committee, done, are you four or against expanding the twenty four teams? I've heard that one coming out.
00:06:38
Speaker 5: Now you heard that coming out. I will say this, Call the guys in Dallas and they'll give you the opinion. Because I am I'm not the one that gets to talk about all that. You don't make those decision. I don't make those decisions.
00:06:47
Speaker 3: Well, you know, as as just.
00:06:49
Speaker 2: A football fan, I always and I I think.
00:06:53
Speaker 3: I'm the only person that that feels this way.
00:06:55
Speaker 2: I kind of like the mythical national champion where you'd wait till the next Monday to the coaches in the media to vote who the best.
00:07:02
Speaker 3: Even are going, Hey, that's who it is.
00:07:03
Speaker 2: This year there was the only sport that didn't actually have a real championship game.
00:07:08
Speaker 5: Yeah, but I mean, I think we're doing a great job with it. I mean there's still mean because it's new. This is the third year with twelve teams. But I like what they're doing.
00:07:19
Speaker 2: I mean, well, it just seems to me because football, I mean, I can you know they're they're thinking of expanding the NCAA tournament in basketball, and I guess I gotta understand that because it's just you know, you can play every other day, right, Yeah, But in football, I mean, if you expand it to twenty four teams all of a sudden, your touch, that's a long postseason. That's almost as long as the regular football season, isn't it. Then you got to cut back a little bit on the.
00:07:43
Speaker 3: Regular season games. I mean, I don't know how they do it. To leave that to smarter.
00:07:45
Speaker 5: People, then that's kinda me. I'm gonna I'm gonna step back. When they give us our protocol and what they want, that's what will do. I mean, I'll follow the protocol, but but yeah, twenty four teams, I don't know, will think.
00:07:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, it seems like a lot.
00:07:58
Speaker 4: As a former offensive lineman, do you watch football differently than the rest of us? Right, Like none of us are mostly not paying attention to the offensive line. We're watching the quarterback, Like are you watching it only watching the trenches?
00:08:08
Speaker 5: Or I start inside and I work my way out so when I get filled and break it down, I get the end zone. Cut the tight line, because I mean, nothing happens unless those guys in front of playing. Well, that's the same with defense. If the d line's not doing what they're supposed to be doing, then it's a long day for the everybody else out there. So I start inside and I work my way out. Then I get the wide copy and watch the receivers and what they're doing, watch the running backs and everything, and then I break it down by I mean third and short, third and long. I watch it. I watched it the way I would if I was gonna play to break down somebody, and so I do that now, I mean everybody. Some people like to watch the TV version of the games and break it down. I don't want to hear anyone else's opinion when I'm watching football. I want to form my own opinion when i'm doing it, and then I'll go back and watch that cop But yeah, as my wife said, it's not what she told me, this is not what we signed up for. When I spend seventy to eighty hours as a week watching that's the film, and I'm like, this is exactly what I signed up for.
00:09:03
Speaker 4: So was common and Rosen the other day. I was asking because I was talking about Kareem Abuiljabbar. Skyhook was like, yeah, unguardable, yep. And I asked him, well, why has no one ever tried to replicate that same thing with your stance? Like at left Guard, you're one of the greatest left guards in history. Why haven't, like all offensive linemen, try to replicate what.
00:09:20
Speaker 5: You did because you can't that that worked for me. Like for Kareem, no one could replicate that skyhook, and he perfected it to a mean word. It was unblockable. No one can get to it. But that worked for him because they went they took a dunk away back and when he was in college, thinking they'll stop the big man that how so he went to the skyhook. That stance for me became to the knee brace.
00:09:40
Speaker 4: Uh.
00:09:41
Speaker 5: And as I tell people, I wasn't always an offensive lineman. So when I so for me, I always told I told the lineman, you got to be athletic to get that stance, and if you're not athletics, then you're not gonna be able to play. Stucy tried it once and then he jumped off side and then then got a holding penalty after that. So I kids that, I go, No, you cannot do my shit. I don't mean unless you started out as a skill position or play. I mean I played basketball, I ran track. Yeah, I played baseball, I wrestled, I did everything. So to getting that chance for me and I was running the four five forty so crazy it works.
00:10:16
Speaker 2: All those sports you played, which one did you find the most difficult?
00:10:21
Speaker 5: Because you played them all, it sounds like, to be honest, Yeah, none of them.
00:10:25
Speaker 3: None.
00:10:26
Speaker 5: Yeah. The one that found difficult when I came here to Minnesota and tried to get on skates. Who the hell sits played?
00:10:34
Speaker 4: You're talking to the hockey.
00:10:34
Speaker 5: Guys, Yeah, yeah, yeah, but I appreciate what the hockey. My nephew's all hockey players and they're great. So yeah, but yeah, the most for me, sports always came easy.
00:10:44
Speaker 4: Yeah. Looks like they want your shot.
00:10:45
Speaker 5: Yeah, oh, I mean you shot.
00:10:48
Speaker 4: It looks like rend Thanks.
00:10:49
Speaker 2: So always good to see you. I'm glad you're enjoying uh close to full retirement.
00:10:54
Speaker 5: We'll get the thank you get to you.
00:10:55
Speaker 3: Bet.
00:10:56
Speaker 2: That's Daniel, longtime Minnesota Viking offensive lineman. Was also a elementary.
00:11:01
Speaker 3: School teacher for years. He says he still checks in at the school and such like that too.
00:11:05
Speaker 2: So yeah, alphamize of him to uh take time out, you write. His team needs him up there, they need a Uh. I didn't watch the others hit, but I gotta think Johnny hits it a.
00:11:13
Speaker 4: Long way they they were looking back at him, like, we need you to hit for us.
00:11:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, so Randall McDaniels so not gonna work, You don't, Randall. I've spent all the time with him because Randall is Yeah, I.
00:11:27
Speaker 3: Hit him straight and strong. Pete, that's Pete. He's the superintendent. We're we're doing a live radio.
00:11:31
Speaker 4: Show right now.
00:11:31
Speaker 3: That's Pete.
00:11:32
Speaker 2: He's the superintendent here out at UH at the medals at Mystic Lake. He let me and UH worlds come out and play while the grounds crew was working.
00:11:40
Speaker 3: He said, yeah, that'll work.
00:11:41
Speaker 2: He says, they're gonna have to be uh, they're gonna have to be dodging some uh some lawn boards.
00:11:45
Speaker 3: And such like that.
00:11:46
Speaker 2: But we had a we had a great time out here, you know. And h Randal McDaniel and UH Morris were really good friends. Mike Forrest, they were really they were like best of friends. So I like, I like what he told the Goosey story, replicated stance and it just didn't quite work out that I would have thought he would have practiced it before he's tried in the game. Yeah, yeah, that's that's what I would do. Well, It's like we talk, you know, we always joke about it if if somebody wins, you know, a PGA tour event. Right, let's say somebody wins a PGA tour, but let's say Scotty Schffler. Next day, you see out on the tea box, you see people trying to drag their foot.
00:12:21
Speaker 3: Like Scottie Scheffler.
00:12:22
Speaker 2: You know, you just don't want to see jim Furick win because all of a sudden they start swinging like Jimmy Furick. You never know what's going to happen there.
00:12:29
Speaker 3: So we'll be yeah, let's go away, you know what, we should go do that now. I think we've had our fill of being out on the golf course. It was fun though. It's nice to run out with a lot of good people.
00:12:37
Speaker 4: We uh, Pete.
00:12:38
Speaker 2: Bursit, Ron Johnson, Johnny Randall, and Rynald McDaniels. We had a chance to talk to all of those guys and yeah, it's kind of fun. Well, maybe we'll do it again next year.
00:12:47
Speaker 3: So let's do this. Let's take a break, we'll come back when we do work next year.
00:12:50
Speaker 4: Can we just play while we're on Well that would.
00:12:52
Speaker 5: Be kind of fun.
00:12:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, Mike, something I almost felt like we I wish. You know, we should have done We should have had them miked up a wire and we could do look to do in the PGA tour the walk and talk, so we could have them go on three walk and talk or just even one whole walk and talk where we could watch them hit a golf shot while they while they were playing.
00:13:09
Speaker 3: So let's do this.
00:13:10
Speaker 2: We're gonna take a break, we'll come back. We're gonna we're obviously not leaving. We're gonna stay ou here at the middle of Mistake Lake broadcast from their patio. It's the Common Man program, along with ten to B Common and soon to be joined by Mark Rosen.
00:13:20
Speaker 3: Right here on the fan.
00:13:21
Speaker 4: They common Man.
00:13:23
Speaker 3: He didn't do a ton of prep. He just goes, hey, yeah, we'll figure out. And there's just only X amount you can be there.
00:13:29
Speaker 1: The radio home a minicial Sports is also on YouTube. You can check out the caf and YouTube channel for exclusive videos in depth takes, initials and password games, maybe streaming live from a golf cart, behind the scenes content and more. Search k F A N on YouTube and hit subscribe today or go to kfan dot com slash watch.
00:14:24
Speaker 3: Hey, welcome back to the mentals. That miss Tic Lake.
00:14:26
Speaker 2: We're on the patio now right outside the clubhouse in the restaurant. I'm the common man Dan Cole along with Tennabe. I was gonna say, this is te de Green. It sure felt like it out there today. We were playing, Okay, we're gonna have to have them. Can you go ask if they can knock the music or can you hear the music?
00:14:47
Speaker 5: I can hear.
00:14:47
Speaker 4: I don't know if they can hear it. Breck, can you hear them?
00:14:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a little bit in the background.
00:14:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, what I think this is live golf or what do they think it is? It was like live golf out on seventeen tea Box. They've got a DJ out there and DJ Guy. The music was, uh, it was thumping like a disco out there.
00:15:05
Speaker 3: But here's what I'll tell you, Tommy. Right away, I was criticizing the music.
00:15:07
Speaker 2: They're playing music, and I looked at Worlds and I said, whatever song they're playing, this is the deep lyrics.
00:15:14
Speaker 5: They have.
00:15:16
Speaker 2: Yeah party in the USA, Yeah, party in the U.
00:15:20
Speaker 3: Wit and they kept repeating it over.
00:15:23
Speaker 5: Song was it?
00:15:25
Speaker 4: Maybe it was the hands up playing a song Butterflies Fly Away?
00:15:31
Speaker 3: So you know better than I do.
00:15:33
Speaker 2: But I was thinking I told us, was that I don't think any of these instruments are real. It's all computer generate, and the voice is probably one of those when do they do it?
00:15:41
Speaker 3: They have the auto tune auto tune.
00:15:44
Speaker 2: But then again, I don't even know if that was the case or not, But that was that was kind of fun out there today to see some of your players. Why don't we go ahead and are some of the former players. Why don't we go ahead and do a little five three four?
00:15:55
Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't have time to tell Brett about the opens or anything right into it without any production.
00:16:00
Speaker 3: Uh time now for five three four?
00:16:04
Speaker 4: And I don't know if I can read this on the note with the shade going on.
00:16:06
Speaker 2: But brought to you by Willow River Company. Get your five to three to four Willow River Company. Now four five questions? Well, actually three, but five sounds like more than four.
00:16:19
Speaker 4: Brought to you by Willow River Company. Brighter okay?
00:16:23
Speaker 2: Question number one, Oh, that's way better than question number one would have been ten to be asking Zach bo. Question Question number one was ten to be asking Zacho if he could make it brighter on his computer screen.
00:16:37
Speaker 3: Let's go to question number two.
00:16:39
Speaker 4: Here question number two. The Twins snapped their five game losing streak with a nine to six win over the White Sox last night at Target Field. Tristan Gray had a grand slam. He also added a sacrifice fly. Joe Ryan gave up four runs and six innings, striking out nine for his third consecutive starts, and Trevor Larnick had two hits, including an rb I single. Comin what sticks out to you from last night's Twins win.
00:17:03
Speaker 2: I was surprised Joe Ryan gave up four run. That's a rocky start for good. Yeah, and he seems to rarely give up a run at all, or very few, you know, I don't know.
00:17:12
Speaker 3: They isn't over out for a while now. And they lost him.
00:17:17
Speaker 2: They've lost two or three well, if you go all the way back to Lopez when they lost him before the season started, and he's gone for the season. They have all sorts of pitchers on the I L and I think I saw where for one of their upcoming starts, they're probably gonna have to do the you know, relief guy, just your relief pitcher, go out there, just pitch as long as you can bring on another guy. Let him pitch as long as he can, because they only have like four healthy starters right now. And I know we'd heard that that the Twins were in Saint Paul in their entire minor league system. They're deep on pitching, not deep enough to keep bringing up guy after a guy after guy against major league hitting.
00:17:54
Speaker 3: It's just it's it's just too Yeah, you can't be that deep.
00:17:59
Speaker 2: I don't think so, you know now it's like you kind of it's it's almost a dark star line.
00:18:04
Speaker 3: You know, Joe Ryan's in there.
00:18:06
Speaker 2: You know, you're you're okay bringing into these other guys in and get the women and children out of the first five rows. It'll be interesting to see how some of these younger guys continue. But but then again, you know, we talk about this all the time, Tennabe in the grand scheme of things, doesn't matter much because it does seem like the team, even though they've had their moments, you know, we we we we, And you could say they're still in the chase for because nobody's really running away with the Guardians and White you know, they had to beat the White Sox White Sox, I think had I don't.
00:18:35
Speaker 3: I'm not looking at the standings now, but they had a they.
00:18:37
Speaker 2: Were they're the closest pursuer of the Guardians, and they had a nice cushion between them and the Twins.
00:18:41
Speaker 3: So it was the one you had to have.
00:18:43
Speaker 2: But if you like baseball, you know, and you want to pay attention to just the daily results, just not a boredom basically, But you know, as far as it just doesn't, I don't see em eighty seven or ninety one Twins thing coming here.
00:18:57
Speaker 3: I don't.
00:18:59
Speaker 4: Use number two question number two. The Links continued a role, winning their fifth straight game one eleven seventy seven win last night over the Phoenix Mercury at Target Center. Courtney Williams scored thirty points, Olivia Miles, the rookie, put up nineteen points on seven to nine shooting, to go along with nine assists, four rebounds, three steals, and the win was the first game in the WNBA's Commissioner's Cup. Oh, they're doing that, which is the league's end season tournament. Common are He's surprised the Links are doing so well without the FISA, Collier and the feet.
00:19:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, I suppose. Cheryl though, seems to know what she's doing.
00:19:41
Speaker 2: She gets the best, the most out of whatever, who's ever on the roster, who's ever healthy. I thought they did the Commissioner's Cup in the NBA just to try to get the players to try a little harder. I didn't think they had that problem with the w NBA players. That's not why they're doing it. They just think it's a good idea. I guess pray for them, just actual way to get him some money. Yeah, you know, that's probably it. Well, because I did see was it the w NBA or no, maybe I was thinking of the Pro Hockey League they were talking about it. Yeah, the kind of dollars and there's not a ton of money out there for that, and there's really not a lot of the WNBA either for now, but that's starting to improve. Kaitlin will change that, yeah, I would. I would think she should. But uh yeah, I uh.
00:20:27
Speaker 3: I mean I think they started the season.
00:20:29
Speaker 2: It wasn't one of their best starts, so I thought, well, maybe it's one of those years.
00:20:32
Speaker 3: But out five in a row, gold Links.
00:20:34
Speaker 4: So I will say the rookie of Libya Miles and I'll be honest, I have not seen a game, but I've seen lots of highlights of their games. And I know it's dangerous to judge a player just top of highlights because you're not seeing the bad things they do, or the negative things they do, or how she looks like just study. Yeah, like one of the best players in the league already as a rookie. I mean the fact that they are best record in the WNBA without their best player and with how many players they lost from last year's team. To me, it says a lot about like she is like Pete Merravitch on the court, like her vision, her passing, the way she sets up teammates, her ability to get to the rim for layups, and she's unbelievable.
00:21:13
Speaker 2: So you're telling me I wanted them to take the center from UCLA. I should just stick to golf and not worry about handicapping WNB.
00:21:23
Speaker 4: I haven't seen the center play, yeah, but I have seen a Liby Miles highlights. She's awesome. Yeah, she's really good.
00:21:29
Speaker 2: You know you talked about highlight packages. I don't recall if it was.
00:21:34
Speaker 3: A Viking player.
00:21:35
Speaker 2: We talked about it when a half and this is half a dozen years ago, six seven years ago. Where you know when they are when a player gets drafted, and then they'll show their highlight Well, then they showed a low light package. Wasn't it was treadwell and the low light the highlight package lasted about twenty seconds. The low light package was like a minute and a half. And it was like, boy, that doesn't really seem very encouraging. And we saw.
00:21:58
Speaker 4: Especially for the first round, the first and draft, they act like everyone's gonna be a great place, right.
00:22:02
Speaker 3: So yeah, so I don't know.
00:22:03
Speaker 2: I've not seen her play either, but you write the highlight pack and she looks.
00:22:06
Speaker 3: Like she looks like she can play ball.
00:22:09
Speaker 4: Question number three. Question number three. The Athletic was the first to break the news that the Wilds director of amateur scouting, Jud Brackett, will be leaving the organization after nearly six years to accept an elevated role with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are hiring him as their assistant general manager. Common Well, the wild miss jud Brackett, Well, you tell me.
00:22:32
Speaker 3: I mean you follow the league more closely than I.
00:22:34
Speaker 2: Do it, because I guess I don't follow it at all. I don't know how much these evaluate what he's meant. I mean, can you point to he did he recognized this guy, that guy, this person, that person.
00:22:45
Speaker 3: You'd have to tell me.
00:22:46
Speaker 4: So jud came in highly regarded from Vancouver. And you know, let's face a good chunk of the Wild's history, their drafts have not been very good. Now, the Caprice Off draft in the fifth round and then you know the Matt boldypick was really good. Brackett took over in twenty twenty and he's drafted Marco Rossy Rossi that year.
00:23:11
Speaker 5: That was good.
00:23:12
Speaker 4: Yeah, And you know, right now you look at his picks, yesper Vall said, looks like a great pick. And I will say it for Judd. You know, Rossi was number nine. All of his other picks have been teens twenties, right, So he's not he's not out there getting the Macklin celebrines of the world and the Conor McDavid's of the world. Right, so he's had to make a lot. But you know, Zee Bullyam was a fantastic pick. Now, I don't know how Bulliams slid to the Wild, but he did.
00:23:40
Speaker 5: You know.
00:23:40
Speaker 4: But right now, when you look at the roster, Ball said, looks like he's gonna be a player, And he drafted players like Rossi, Bulliam Ogrin that turned into assets that you could turn into Quinn Hughes. So you know, he he hasn't had a lot of success after the first round, you know, second, third, fourth round, fifth round, there hasn't been a lot of impact players off of those. But from where he was drafting in the first round, like, he doesn't really have many misses, and like I said, a lot of those guys you were able to parlay into Quinn Hughes. So I think he's done a you know, has he hit home runs in Grand Slams? Not necessarily, but you know he's he's he was hitting doubles.
00:24:21
Speaker 2: So do we do we know, do we have any idea, any indication whatsoever who will take his spot with the wild.
00:24:29
Speaker 4: I don't know. It sounds like obviously that you know, the amateur draft is already you know, later this month, so they're not gonna have time at this point to bring someone in and have them run your draft for you. They and they also are lacking draft picks anyways. Yeah, they've they've spent a lot of draft picks with Quinn Hughes and David Yurchik trades over the last couple of years. I think they're missing A one and A two this year?
00:24:50
Speaker 2: Would this been had we been in studio, would this have been worth a h.
00:24:56
Speaker 3: Please don't go.
00:24:57
Speaker 4: I wouldn't go that far. That well, it's it always hard to know, Like he was in charge of amateur scouting, right, so he's in charge of draft. But it's always hard to ever know. You know, is there a scout pushing for this guy that was right? Or you know, did Bill Gharon push for this guy or you're right? You never know with Yeah, it's a hard thing with Quazy, like how much of Quasi's bad draft picks were Quazy and how much of it was other influence from others. It's hard to ever know. That's different.
00:25:21

00:26:53
Speaker 2: Tend Toby, I want to thank Pete the superintendent and speaking of Lucky Mike Luckcraft, Lucky the director of golf here.
00:27:00
Speaker 3: So when we were out on the golf course for about an hour and.
00:27:05
Speaker 2: Ten minutes, we interviewed Pete Bursi, Ron Johnson, Random McDaniel and John Random.
00:27:10
Speaker 3: John Randall was the first We ran into out at the seventh.
00:27:14
Speaker 2: Hole apart three, and then after we went to break, one of the UH players in in Johnny Randall's group said common, will you hit a shot for us?
00:27:25
Speaker 3: I want you to hit our shots.
00:27:26
Speaker 2: I said, okay, handed me a five would UH by a company who's golf clubs? I don't play, so there's And then Johnny started, why did you start to talk about excuses?
00:27:36
Speaker 5: Yeah?
00:27:36
Speaker 3: How did you do that?
00:27:37
Speaker 2: I can't remember the biddy had, but he he was like collecting excuses and he was pretending he was carrying catching him and carrying him.
00:27:42
Speaker 3: But you have answer me.
00:27:47
Speaker 2: You have if you watch PGA Tour golf and a guy hits a T shot or any kind of a shot, they've got shot trace is that what they called her tracker.
00:27:56
Speaker 3: And you'll see it. You've got it on your phone. It's it's astonishing. It's just like TV and you set it costs you like nine.
00:28:03
Speaker 4: To ten bucks one. Yeah it wasn't. But it's not like a monthly thing. So that's why I was like, well, even if it ends up being a crap app or I don't like it like, well just a one time small payment.
00:28:14
Speaker 3: Well, because you sent me one, I think, did you post this at all?
00:28:17
Speaker 4: Yeah?
00:28:17
Speaker 5: I put it on.
00:28:17
Speaker 4: I put on my social channel, okay, because put on excellent Instagram.
00:28:22
Speaker 2: Every time I see my swing, I realize how bad it is, you know, I I wrap it around my body. I don't make a bit. I've got a rotten swing, terrible swing, right, Uh.
00:28:33
Speaker 3: But I hit it. I knocked it on the green nevertheless.
00:28:37
Speaker 2: But I just loved the shot tracer and I know it's accurate because that's exactly where my ball.
00:28:41
Speaker 3: Lient up on the green. So I just think it's the coolest app ever. And what is it called?
00:28:44
Speaker 4: Is it smooth Swing?
00:28:46
Speaker 3: Smooth Swing?
00:28:47
Speaker 4: Yeah?
00:28:47
Speaker 2: I just did a little sales pitch there for smooth swing dot com. Download your app. Today we ran in UH to former UH Detroit Lion Minnesota. I in an Iowa Hawk eye linebacker Ben Lieber. Just before we went on the air, he was leaving. He played a handful of holes. But he has his TV show and of course liber sideline reporter for the Vikings Radio network.
00:29:16
Speaker 3: And I said, I got a theory.
00:29:17
Speaker 5: He goes, what's that? I go?
00:29:19
Speaker 2: Odas are contrived by the National I said, I was told that you because somebody Texas. We were talking otis yesterday. I had the Dan Campbell quote, what we call them pajama parties. Campbell, I don't believe thinks there's a lot of need for for.
00:29:38
Speaker 3: Otis. And so I went to Ben and I said, did you like I heard you liked otus?
00:29:41
Speaker 5: Oh? Yeah, I loved him.
00:29:43
Speaker 2: And I said, as a player, yeah, you liked them. No contact, you know, blah blah blah, Get with your buddies.
00:29:48
Speaker 3: I go let me ask you something.
00:29:50
Speaker 2: I think organized team activities are nothing but a creation by the National Football League to keep the league in the news year round. You've heard my theory. Yeah, finish with the big game on the first weekend in February. They give you maybe a week and you're talking about the big game, right. Then all of a sudden it gets into free agency and the Well, first it's the combine, right, just combine, come before free agency?
00:30:16
Speaker 3: Yes, I think it's combine. Then it's free agent.
00:30:18
Speaker 4: It's combine and then popping tags, popping tags, then free agency, then then draft, then the draft and then the Mini caamps and ODA, right, and then it's training well, and you have schedule release, but first you have you have the tease of when the schedule is going to be released. And then you don't just release it all at once. You release it in little segments of we've got international games here, the first game this season is going to be here, and so they they it's just constantly every day, we got something new for you to.
00:30:47
Speaker 2: Non exactly right and so and Lieber said, I was dead wrong.
00:30:51
Speaker 3: He said, they help, they need them.
00:30:53
Speaker 2: I said, well, the old guys bud gets, and those guys didn't use them. And then he said, well, none of those guys will be able to play in our league right now. Well, yeah, but that's an app an orange just kind of a thing. I mean, if you took Dick Dick Buckis or any any of the old guys that you know, back in the old days, the game didn't pay enough for guys to be able to have the offseason off just you know, work on staying in shape and maybe watching a little film.
00:31:16
Speaker 3: You were done with the football season, then you.
00:31:18
Speaker 2: Went to the meatpacking plant or you were a truck driver or whatever it was, so that you could supplement your football income. Right, And I said, well, those guys would be I said, they'd be just as good as No, they wouldn't do that. And then he goes, you're just trying to get me going, and I said, no, I'm not. I just I don't believe there's a real need for it. But he claims there is. He thinks it works really well, and maybe they do. I mean, it's it is bigger business though it used to be. And you know, you got.
00:31:47
Speaker 4: I think Johnny Randall gave the answer that Ben just couldn't. But at the same one, the well, I'm employed by National Football League teams, so I really think the OTA is a great exactly.
00:31:56
Speaker 3: I think that's probably what what that had to do with.
00:31:59
Speaker 2: But so yeah, you know, and again they're going on and I didn't I thought they were like two or three days or like a week and a half, right, So and what they're well, I even said I was, I don't know. I have said this a lever, but you know how it is. Tenneby they they you talked about the releasing, the schedule and drips and drabs.
00:32:19
Speaker 3: It's the same thing. The first day of OTIS was no media. But here's a couple of videos we have of our quarterbacks.
00:32:26
Speaker 4: Yes, like these.
00:32:27
Speaker 3: Little videos is all you're gonna get.
00:32:28
Speaker 2: This is It's like an appetizer, you know, this is all you get is the is.
00:32:32
Speaker 4: The uh And they don't show the overthrown balls that they make, No, and you see the two and then of course, as we talked about it was just hilarious.
00:32:39
Speaker 2: All of a sudden, it was like people started breaking down the video and when looks like Kyler Murray's got that leg whip just like McCarthy, as are we in trouble now? And then people start debating that and start tossing and turning.
00:32:51
Speaker 3: Losing sleep over that. So but it's all good.
00:32:55
Speaker 5: You know.
00:32:56
Speaker 2: Well I talked about this Deuce and I for the first time ever, my wife was watching UFL football United Football League.
00:33:03
Speaker 4: Which amazes me.
00:33:04
Speaker 3: Ah, well, you know, I wouldn't if Deuce wouldn't have turned it on. And he turns it on. We're just sitting there talking having you know, luncheons.
00:33:11
Speaker 5: You know.
00:33:11
Speaker 2: He turns on the TV and he we click around to a couple of things and he stumbles upon the football thing.
00:33:15
Speaker 3: Well it was either that or watch the NFL. Had do people really watch these things?
00:33:21
Speaker 2: Seattle Seahawks versus Pittsburgh Steelers from like you know, two thousand and eight, a replay of the game.
00:33:30
Speaker 3: And it's why I mean, I don't under.
00:33:33
Speaker 4: And what's what gets federatings? Those are a National Hockey League playoff game. I bet it wouldn't be that far apart.
00:33:38
Speaker 2: I think you're probably right, but uh so, but we're watching that UFL stuff. And I told you yesterday the highlight for it was sideline reporter guy was in the crowd. They were talking about beer cup snakes, where I guess that's one of the things people do, and they stack him and then and then he wanted to add to it, so he on national television chug de beer.
00:34:02
Speaker 3: Sideline reporter chugg de beer was spilled.
00:34:05
Speaker 2: Then they showed the instant replay of it spilling in slow motion, spilling down.
00:34:09
Speaker 3: The front of his shirt.
00:34:10
Speaker 2: And so I didn't watch it to the end, but I wonder if he started slurring his words by the end of.
00:34:15
Speaker 3: The show because he was getting drunk. Right, Oh, here's the other one.
00:34:18
Speaker 5: What is this new?
00:34:19
Speaker 3: Fat? I saved the story and forgot to get.
00:34:21
Speaker 4: Into it and was drinking the.
00:34:25
Speaker 3: Left fly His was purple kool aid rather than beer.
00:34:29
Speaker 2: What is this new craze that's going on where everybody takes their shirts off at baseball games?
00:34:35
Speaker 3: Have you seen this thing? Tenneby?
00:34:38
Speaker 2: It's it's and now it's spreading into all sports. So what you're supposed to do is you're in the crowd and you're supposed to take your psych Some of these people like you wouldn't want to see me with my shirt off. I'm skinny, scrawny, getting old and wrinkly. Half the people keep your shirt on. I don't want to be I don't want to be exposed to your exposed as you're your.
00:35:00
Speaker 3: Big hairy belly, and I don't want to see it.
00:35:04
Speaker 2: But apparently that's the thing now, is ever you're supposed to take your shirt off at games?
00:35:08
Speaker 4: Well, I think it can be pointing back to one thing.
00:35:12
Speaker 3: Alcohol consumptions, while that.
00:35:16
Speaker 4: Our culture today is addicted to attention. Yeah, we have an attention addiction right where everyone on social media? Right, Like, if you're like in Italy, let's say, instead of just taking a picture of your beautiful place in Italy, you gotta take a selfie of yourself in Italy, right.
00:35:34
Speaker 2: Right right, exactly exactly, like or like you're in the Dominican Republican you're taking a picture of an island par three instead of just taking a picture of the golf hol you stick your face into the camera.
00:35:48
Speaker 3: We know you're there.
00:35:49
Speaker 2: The picture is on your Instagram account. There's no reason to see your face there. We know you're there.
00:35:55
Speaker 4: But like the vast majority of people, they don't enjoy concerts anymore. They don't enjoy sporting events. If they're at a PGA tour, bent they all gotta have their phones up, Like you're at a concert and you gotta have your phone recording it instead of just just watch it live. But and it's not even about Hey, I'm gonna go back and I'm gonna watch this concert in my phone. It's I got to send this out and let everyone know that I'm at this concert because I need attention because I'm at this concert. And so now people even if you go to a Twins game or a Major League Baseball game, all people want to do is get on the JumboTron or find their way on to the Twins dot TV. And taking your shirt off is gonna give you a better chance of doing that.
00:36:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, well I've done it before. Myself.
00:36:38
Speaker 2: I think, I know I've recams with this tale, but it's been a number of years. This was back in my cub reporter days when I was working at the radio station in Forest Lake, and much to my surprise, I applied for a Vikings media credential, never thinking I would get. And they're not gonna give media credentials to the National Football League team and down to.
00:36:54
Speaker 5: Some you know.
00:36:57
Speaker 2: Fringe market inforced like you know, the signal doesn't even boom into the Twin Cities. It's it's just sitting on the outskirts going the other direction of for stlas Lo. And behold, they gave me one. And I think the statute of limitations is over. I would get to and bring my brother or a buddy to come to the game, to breaking all the rules, right, I mean, you're not supposed to bring friends.
00:37:17
Speaker 3: Or family members with a with a media pass.
00:37:20
Speaker 2: It just doesn't work that way, right, And I professional, and I just told my I said, well, it's because we're gonna have one person in the visitors locker room and one in the Vikings.
00:37:30
Speaker 3: Oh sounds great. They love it, you know, and they really deep down don't care.
00:37:33
Speaker 2: But anyway, so I go there and it's the Viking playoff game that they lost to the uh.
00:37:40
Speaker 4: You more specific, Wow, it was?
00:37:46
Speaker 3: It was. It was so long ago.
00:37:48
Speaker 2: Joe Gibbs was the coach and they were still called the Washington Redskins at the time they lost a wild card playoff game.
00:37:53
Speaker 3: Was on ABC.
00:37:56
Speaker 2: So I'm in the Vikings locker room, or maybe it was the Washington locker room. They were gonna do an interview with somebody, and I could see they were getting ready to go live. I wish I could remember. I think it was Gibbs, I don't know, might have been the vite I don't know who it was. But all of a sudden they go live. And then so right when they go live, I stepped between the I'm behind them, but I'm right between the two of us.
00:38:15
Speaker 3: So you can see me.
00:38:16
Speaker 2: Standing there and he's interviewing him, and I'm sure that the guy that the director of the producer going, who the hell is that standing back there? What is that idiot doing? Why is he standing? And then here's the best part. My unc my late uncle Buddy's at home and Nina, Wisconsin. He's watching the game. He sees he goes, that's Danny. He calls my dad, your son's on TV right now, So my dad turns it on and then I am mugging for the camera.
00:38:43
Speaker 4: How sad is you were that guy? I was at attention?
00:38:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, I was adictive attention.
00:38:47
Speaker 2: Well, I just because I did want to see if anybody would see me that I knew, and sure enough they did.
00:38:51
Speaker 3: But I was addicted to attention here exactly right.
00:38:53
Speaker 4: So I got an ask, it's kind of a free requisite for being U sportsocc rat host is being condicted.
00:38:58
Speaker 3: Well, and then I did it.
00:38:59
Speaker 2: At the nineteen ninety when US opened at Hazelty National Golf Course. Had a had a media pass to get into there. My buddy just had a regular ticket. We came in and I this was back in the VHS days, and you could take a VHS and put it on slow so it would record six hours of programming, right, I said, we're gonna get on national TV one way. That.
00:39:19
Speaker 3: It was kind of the thing.
00:39:20
Speaker 2: I wasn't even in the I was in the radio business, but I wasn't working major market or anything like that. It was just, you know, working on the Forestlake radio station anyway, So all day trying to find a way to get on there.
00:39:32
Speaker 4: We can't do it.
00:39:33
Speaker 2: We get to the tenth hole at Hazelton, the ninety three dog leg left that goes downhill. On the down hill part between the top of the fairway and the green, we're just sitting. We're tired, We've been there all day. So I'm sitting on the in the grass. All of a sudden we hear commotion up on the top of the fairway where the ninety degree turn is. Somebody's hit their ball through the fairway into the junk. So I go running up there as fast as I can. It was fred Couples. He had hit it underneath a bunch of bushes. So me and a couple other guys get there right away. Sure so you can see when the red light comes on, and you could. I have the video somewhere. I haven't watched it in ages, but you can see me talking to the guy next to us, like, look, we're on TV right now.
00:40:11
Speaker 3: The red cameras there.
00:40:12
Speaker 2: And Couples and they keep coming back to it because Freddy's trying to figure out what he's gonna do with your shot.
00:40:16
Speaker 3: Right, Let's go back to ten, And so Couples eventually.
00:40:19
Speaker 2: Is down on one knee and he hits it like baseball style from under the bush and he hits a brilliant shot.
00:40:25
Speaker 3: Of course they do, right.
00:40:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, And then I'm clapping like this. So I got on TV that time too, So I was bounded.
00:40:32
Speaker 3: Up a ryder cup. I got on national TV. I was, and I swore that's what my should have behind Fred.
00:40:38
Speaker 2: Well, that's that's probably what I should have. Well back then that would have got to arrested. I think nowadays they encourage it.
00:40:43
Speaker 4: Now you go viral.
00:40:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, now you go viral.
00:40:46
Speaker 2: Have you ever had like a national TV experience like you probably never even cared to?
00:40:51
Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, I've Yeah, I've got a lot of middle child. I'm a very middle child like birth order. Everything you hear about the middle child birth order, that is me. I don't care to be on camera. I don't care to get the attention.
00:41:03
Speaker 3: Is that the middle child birth order thing?
00:41:05
Speaker 4: Middle middle children don't like their pictures taken.
00:41:09
Speaker 3: I'm a middle child.
00:41:11
Speaker 4: Well you're you're maybe outside the birth order? Then well, Rosen can't be a middle child, no chance, no chance. Where are you in the birth order? Roasan, Yeah, you're a middle man. I guess maybe this middle child doesn't work because middle.
00:41:25
Speaker 2: Child is supposed to be some of those like that their picture taken and no one's taking more selfies than you, so that can't be possible.
00:41:33
Speaker 3: Oh really did a lot of campaign people do selfies? Wow, he's struggling.
00:41:42
Speaker 4: Meat Sauce Lucky meets us those selfies.
00:41:45
Speaker 3: Well, you know what, you know what's really sad about Meat Sauce.
00:41:48
Speaker 2: He's always got Louis on pictures and talking about he's exploiting his child to try to prop up sagging radiance.
00:41:56
Speaker 3: How sad is that? I mean, what, you don't do that to your kid. I can't believe he would do such embarrassing. It's embarrassing, it really is to exploit your your children like that.
00:42:07
Speaker 4: By the way, I'm about to completely sidetrack disconversation. Uh, I don't have a child in lacrosse, but youth lacrosse is getting bigger. Justin Guard the other day had posted because this kid was in a lacrosse tournament ten year old lacrosse tournament that apparently lacrosse they have like a timed like you're out at a certain amount of time, okay, and they're allowed timeouts. So he said these coaches when there's like two minutes left in the game, they get up like a goal, well, we'll call a time out with two minutes left, knowing it's gonna they're trying to bleed the clock in ten year old lacrosse. And I'm like, that is so embarrassing that, like we're trying to develop kids. You should like you want them to play and get better. They're get calling a time out, moving more to the side and just trying to kill the clock for your w's and your records. That doesn't make him.
00:43:00
Speaker 3: Better lacrosse especially that Well, that's.
00:43:07
Speaker 4: That's the I think that's embarrassed.
00:43:08
Speaker 3: That's youth sports. I think, well, not every youth sport, not every coach, not every.
00:43:12
Speaker 2: Team, not every athlete, not every parent goes that route, but that does seem to be.
00:43:16
Speaker 4: Bleeding the clock in ten year old lacrosse.
00:43:18
Speaker 2: We played in AA I played on a My boy played on an AAU team. Right now, names will will remain anonymous to protect the unis or whatever.
00:43:26
Speaker 3: There was one day who basically thought, well, the team is basically for my kid. This team exists because my kid is going to get a scholarship somewhere.
00:43:34
Speaker 2: So if his kid didn't play the most minutes, wasn't in the game all the time, he would go talk to the coach about it. And it's like, I felt bad for the coach because the coach is trying to you know, I mean at you know, like most of these AA teams, you're playing your best player for more minutes. But this guy wanted his kid on the on the floor all the time. And it actually got to the point it was embarrassing. He almost felt bad for him. It's like, and of course, as we fast forward, now his kids no longer playing basketball. I think he played Division three basketball than he was done.
00:44:01
Speaker 3: But he thought his.
00:44:02
Speaker 2: Kid was going to the NBA, I think, or doing Division Division one anyway.
00:44:05
Speaker 4: So yeah, it's not easy to go to the NBA.
00:44:08
Speaker 3: No, it's it's not at all. All right, let's take a break. We'll come back.
00:44:11
Speaker 2: The legendary one Mark rose And is here. He'll join us. We're broadcasting live. We're at the Medals of Mistic Lake. It's the side of the Vikings Foundation charity golf event.

00:00:44

00:25:21
Speaker 2: Five question and that's it for today's edition of five Questions. Well actually three questions, but five sounds like more than four.

00:44:19
Speaker 3: A short break.
00:44:20
Speaker 2: Will come back with more, including Tennabee common Mark Rosen right here on the fan.
00:44:24
Speaker 4: The common Man
