Not every setback ruins the story. Sometimes the setback becomes the story.
We were in Greece enjoying a day at the beach when Reagan stepped on a sea urchin.
Just like that, beach time was over.
We had to find a pharmacy, figure out how to remove the quills, and decide whether we were about to spend the rest of the day at a hospital.
The pharmacist told us we should go.
We didn’t want the entire day to become a hospital visit if we could safely handle it ourselves.
Eventually, we got what we needed, including a hypodermic needle, and carefully removed the quills.
Reagan was okay.
Then we had a choice.
Call the day ruined...
or keep going.
So we found another beach.
The kids played.
The trip moved on.
And now Reagan has a story most people don’t:
“I stepped on a sea urchin in Greece.”
That’s what gets me.
At the time, it felt like the thing that interrupted the day.
Looking back, it became one of the stories that made the trip ours.
Romans 8:28 reminds us that God can work through all things for good.
That doesn’t mean every setback is good.
It means the setback doesn’t have to get the final word.
Sometimes the frustration becomes the memory.
Sometimes the memory becomes the story.
And sometimes the story becomes something you’re actually glad you have.
I’m still trying to find a sea urchin preserved in resin to give Reagan as a reminder.
Not of the pain.
Of the story.
