The hardest part of leaving the military isn’t the paperwork—it’s the silence that follows. Len from Irreverent Warriors joins us to share how humor, short shorts, and shared miles become a lifeline for veterans navigating the identity gap after service. We get real about the numbers, the isolation, and the way a veteran-only space can flip a switch from “I’m fine” to “I’m understood.”
We walk through exactly how a Silkies hike works: Friday meet-and-greet, Saturday’s ruck at an easy pace with support vehicles and water stops, a surprise route that keeps the focus on connection, and a Sunday brunch to cap the weekend. First-timer bracelets spark conversations, sober-friendly guides offer safe company, and accessibility is built in for all abilities. Beyond hikes, IW now runs retreats, floats, fitness events, and destination cruises, pulling vets out of the house and into a tribe that gets them in five minutes without a heavy backstory.
We talk about the power of humor as a pressure valve, the stigma women veterans still face, and how her show, The Mental Health Warrior, spotlights practical healing modalities from equine therapy to cold plunges. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to show up, this is it: you don’t need special gear, perfect shoes, or a full ruck. You just need to take the first step.

00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:22.399
Hey guys, so welcome to Suke Stevas.
00:00:22.879 --> 00:00:26.320
Today we have Len with Irreverent Warriors.
00:00:26.399 --> 00:00:27.120
Welcome, Len.
00:00:27.280 --> 00:00:27.839
Welcome, Len.
00:00:28.320 --> 00:00:29.519
Thank you for having me.
00:00:29.839 --> 00:00:30.879
Absolutely.
00:00:31.199 --> 00:00:38.079
So if you could tell us a little bit more about Irreverent Warriors and how you became involved in that.
00:00:38.399 --> 00:00:42.799
Okay, so Irreverent Warriors is a nonprofit.
00:00:43.039 --> 00:00:47.439
We are in over 150 plus cities around the nation and the world.
00:00:47.520 --> 00:00:53.520
That includes Guam, Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, London, Germany, Italy.
00:00:54.159 --> 00:00:55.039
Say that five times.
00:00:55.439 --> 00:00:57.359
Woo! Yes, impressive.
00:00:57.679 --> 00:00:59.679
So what we do is we cater to veterans.
00:00:59.759 --> 00:01:08.000
And the whole mission is we bring veterans together using humor and camaraderie to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide.
00:01:08.159 --> 00:01:09.439
Why is that important?
00:01:09.840 --> 00:01:14.959
Because 22, at least 22 veterans a day kill themselves.
00:01:15.200 --> 00:01:17.120
A lot of people don't understand that number.
00:01:17.280 --> 00:01:24.799
Since 9-11, since GWAT, our era of war veterans, 200,000 veterans have killed themselves.
00:01:24.959 --> 00:01:27.760
Now the 22 number, that is low.
00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:32.239
That is low because it could, it's probably possibly up to 44.
00:01:32.319 --> 00:01:37.680
The 22 is only the veterans that seek veteran affairs care, VA medical care.
00:01:38.159 --> 00:01:40.480
Those are the people who are registered with the VA.
00:01:40.640 --> 00:01:42.879
Not every veteran is registered with the VA.
00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:44.319
So it's super important.
00:01:44.480 --> 00:01:49.280
So we started this mission in 2015 with Donnie O'Malley.
00:01:49.920 --> 00:01:52.879
And he was like, yo, like he's a combat veteran.
00:01:52.959 --> 00:01:55.280
He's a Marine Corps officer.
00:01:55.439 --> 00:01:58.000
And he got out, he's like, yo, all my friends are killing themselves.
00:01:58.079 --> 00:01:58.879
What the hell?
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:00.719
What do I need to do?
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:01.840
What can we do?
00:02:02.159 --> 00:02:10.560
What happens when we get out of the military is we not only do we lose our job, but we lose our identity and our purpose.
00:02:10.879 --> 00:02:22.159
Because in the military, they tell you what to do, where to go, how to look like, how to dress, how to how to go to sleep, how to even eat, how to stay fit.
00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:28.879
You don't even have to worry about paying bills at that point because you're either staying in a barracks on a ship or wherever.
00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:32.719
And it's your choice, you know, if you're married and have kids to stay outside in town.
00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:40.879
But you're pretty much like groomed into being like a robot less killing machine, if you will, like to fight the mission.
00:02:41.039 --> 00:02:51.199
So not everybody obviously is a combat rating or combat job, but our job is to support the mission, and everybody has their purpose, and you know exactly what your purpose and your mission is.
00:02:51.360 --> 00:03:04.719
When you get out the military and you spent years in there, especially in formidable years, from the age of 18 to 25, which is the bulk of our military, you you pretty much grow up in that.
00:03:05.919 --> 00:03:08.159
So when you get out, now what?
00:03:08.560 --> 00:03:09.120
Who am I?
00:03:09.759 --> 00:03:10.159
Who am I?
00:03:10.400 --> 00:03:12.080
I didn't even think about it like that.
00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:12.400
Yeah.
00:03:12.800 --> 00:03:21.520
So now when you are faced being alone, because now you're in a world full of other people who've never served in their entire life.
00:03:21.599 --> 00:03:23.039
So they don't know what it's like.
00:03:23.439 --> 00:03:25.280
So now you feel like an outcast.
00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:29.280
Now you're like, and now you've always also been trained to suck it up.
00:03:29.599 --> 00:03:39.599
So you don't go to the VA, you don't go get help, you're too proud, you don't ask for help, you don't tell people you're going through stuff because we're trained to do that.
00:03:39.680 --> 00:03:41.199
We're trained for the mission.
00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:43.280
So what happens when you get out?
00:03:43.439 --> 00:03:44.479
You're lost.
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:46.240
A veteran is lost.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:03:48.879
Where are we supposed to go?
00:03:49.199 --> 00:03:50.400
What are we supposed to do?
00:03:50.560 --> 00:03:52.000
Who can we connect with?
00:03:52.319 --> 00:03:55.360
My friend that I serve with is in San Diego or in Virginia.
00:03:55.439 --> 00:03:56.240
I live in Florida.
00:03:56.319 --> 00:03:57.439
There's people in Michigan.
00:03:57.840 --> 00:03:59.840
Everyone comes from all over parts of the world.
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:05.039
It's not like you join the military with your class of 2015 or whatever.
00:04:05.360 --> 00:04:07.520
No, I joined the military on my own.
00:04:07.680 --> 00:04:09.039
I got out on my own.
00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:10.639
Now I'm on my own.
00:04:10.879 --> 00:04:12.319
Where is my people at?
00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:25.120
So we brought Irreverent Warriors came up, and uh it's only for, and this is why it's only for veterans, active duty, service members, reserves, Coast Guard.
00:04:25.279 --> 00:04:28.000
It's only for us who can get DD214s.
00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:31.839
And that is the reason why is because we share this connection.
00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:42.800
It doesn't matter if I met you five minutes ago or if I've known you for 20 years, we're going to have the same connection and we're going to be able to relate to each other and have that humor.
00:04:43.040 --> 00:04:49.920
The way that we got through our deployments, being away from family and all that stuff is through humor.
00:04:50.160 --> 00:04:52.240
And so that's part of our mission, is through humor.
00:04:52.319 --> 00:04:55.360
And when you when we say irreverent, people are like, Well, what's that?
00:04:55.839 --> 00:04:56.480
Irrelevant.
00:04:56.560 --> 00:04:57.920
No, it's irreverent.
00:04:58.079 --> 00:05:07.040
And so if you think of comedies like old school, like Anchor Man, like The Office, like you know how it's a dry and dark humor or whatever.
00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:07.439
Yeah.
00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:09.839
Yeah, you have to laugh or you'll cry.
00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:13.199
You know, you'd have to, you have to, you have to have some kind of outlet.
00:05:13.600 --> 00:05:15.920
It's like it's like a deadpan kind of humor, right?
00:05:16.160 --> 00:05:17.519
Or slapstick comedy.
00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:26.639
Like that's how veterans get through things because we're probably like maybe you're getting shot at, maybe you're deployed, maybe you're in the middle of the ocean, maybe you're in the middle of the desert.
00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:29.360
And then you have to laugh at things, right?
00:05:29.600 --> 00:05:29.839
Correct.
00:05:30.160 --> 00:05:34.480
The reason why I laugh and I have all this humor is because I have all this trauma, right?
00:05:35.120 --> 00:05:41.199
And so we all we all go through the we all go through the same things, but different things at the same time.
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:43.279
So everybody's going through something.
00:05:43.519 --> 00:05:49.120
So that's part of our mission is bringing veterans together using humor and camaraderie.
00:05:49.199 --> 00:06:00.079
And camaraderie is important because, like I said, you go in alone, you get out alone, and now you don't have that brotherhood, that sisterhood that you you you made that blood of the covenant, right?
00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:10.879
You made that covenant of blood with these people, like you sacrifice your life, you're giving your life to the country, you sign that bottom line, and your paycheck is like giving your life, you know.
00:06:11.120 --> 00:06:11.920
Right, absolutely.
00:06:12.639 --> 00:06:16.560
And what part of the sisters what part did you serve in the military?
00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:19.680
I was in the Navy, I was in the United States Navy for 10 years.
00:06:19.759 --> 00:06:32.319
I served from 2003 to 2013, and the mission is important to me because every single veteran that I've come across has similar stories.
00:06:32.480 --> 00:06:37.040
They have lost somebody through suicide, or we're fighting our own demons, or both.
00:06:38.399 --> 00:06:53.839
And we're all going through something, so it definitely has meaning for me, it has meaning for for all of us that participate, and you could see the joy and like the relief and like just the therapy in these unconventional ways after the veterans get back from the hikes.
00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:55.120
You've seen it, Jackie.
00:06:55.199 --> 00:06:59.199
You you came and you helped volunteer, and you have too, Denise.
00:06:59.519 --> 00:07:00.240
I absolutely have.
00:07:00.480 --> 00:07:03.279
What have you seen after the hikes?
00:07:04.160 --> 00:07:06.959
I just I mean, for me personally, Jackie, you go ahead.
00:07:07.040 --> 00:07:08.879
You haven't said much to one.
00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:11.600
I can talk a lot about irreverent warriors.
00:07:11.839 --> 00:07:13.680
I am wearing my IW Puerto Rico.
00:07:16.959 --> 00:07:17.439
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:20.240
Yeah, no, it has been truly an amazing experience.
00:07:20.319 --> 00:07:24.079
I will say, like, I'm I'm so honored to be able to go and volunteer with you guys.
00:07:24.160 --> 00:07:27.360
And as you know, like I said, like, hey, I'm new in Florida, I want to go meet people.
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:29.040
I went right to an IW hike.
00:07:29.199 --> 00:07:35.199
Like, you guys are an amazing group of people, and yeah, it just it blows my mind everything that you guys have been through.
00:07:35.360 --> 00:07:41.199
But the mission I think is so powerful and important, and that's why you know I absolutely love it and everything.
00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:45.439
And one thing that I did want to ask like I know you are in the leadership role and everything.
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:52.240
And was that kind of part of your mission when you were drawn to sorry, I know I froze, but to be a leader?
00:07:53.120 --> 00:07:58.959
No, I um kind of just fell into it, and that's the story of my life.
00:07:59.120 --> 00:08:01.120
I just fall into leadership positions.
00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:03.360
They're like, you, you look like a leader.
00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:05.199
You look like you know what you're doing.
00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:05.920
Come on.
00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:08.879
He looks like someone we want to lead.
00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:10.720
I'm like, no.
00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:14.480
Well, it just like it just fell into place.
00:08:14.639 --> 00:08:20.240
I think because we are so used to turnover in the military, right?
00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:22.079
The only constant is change.
00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:22.560
Yeah.
00:08:22.879 --> 00:08:25.120
And we adapt to change all the time.
00:08:25.360 --> 00:08:28.560
I think the last person, their time was just up, right?
00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:36.639
So like for me, every three years, we used to move duty stations or get permanently change of station PCS every three years.
00:08:36.879 --> 00:08:41.200
So after your time is up, you're ready to move on in something better and just become a hiker.
00:08:41.360 --> 00:08:43.200
And so that's kind of like what happened.
00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:44.159
It was a progression.
00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:45.279
They brought me into the team.
00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:46.879
They're like, you can be co-lead.
00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:51.759
And then eventually, the very next year, they're like, Well, you you've you did it, you got it.
00:08:53.200 --> 00:08:57.120
So my background actually is project management.
00:08:57.279 --> 00:08:58.720
I have my master's degree in that.
00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:00.799
I got my I did my GI Bill.
00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:14.559
So I got my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Concentration Accounting, my master's in business administration and project management, and I tried to get my doctorates and I am a PhD dropout.
00:09:14.639 --> 00:09:16.720
So that's what I always pick as the leader.
00:09:16.799 --> 00:09:17.600
I see that now.
00:09:18.159 --> 00:09:22.720
Well, I was like, listen, I would like to be at your level as a dropout.
00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:31.759
I got my I got my master's, I got my doctorate, and then at the very you're you're doing okay what you're doing.
00:09:32.559 --> 00:09:34.399
And and this is the thing, I never lead with that.
00:09:34.559 --> 00:09:36.960
I never tell people my what my credentials are.
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:37.360
Right.
00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:42.240
I'm just like, I'm just my authentic self, and that's all you could be is your authentic self.
00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:56.080
And I guess when you stay positive and you're just you just give that listening ear or that shoulder to lean on or cry on, you know, people kind of gravitate to you, you know, kind of like flies flies to the light.
00:09:57.600 --> 00:10:02.559
But in a more but in a more positive way, in a more positive way, yeah.
00:10:02.720 --> 00:10:06.720
Veterans are don't don't like yeah, we're not going like don't what is it like?
00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:14.080
No, no, we're no, you're just a positive draw, you're like a vibe, like like yes, yeah.
00:10:14.720 --> 00:10:19.360
So I think energy attracts energy, and so I agree, absolutely.
00:10:19.840 --> 00:10:30.799
Well, and going back, just like I I I've only been on one, I've only volunteered once, but but it's gonna be the first of many, because that was just last year, and it was amazing.
00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:36.000
And I under I totally understand that it's just for the veterans, and it's so but that's why it's so cool.
00:10:36.159 --> 00:10:39.759
As like my dad was in the army, my have brothers that serve.
00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:50.879
I like I have I'm from a military family, so it it was nice to be able to come and help out and give back to one small little event at a time.
00:10:51.440 --> 00:11:03.440
It's just amazing to see these people come together, and then and we had during our lunchtime, I'm not gonna lie, they talk and they talk their truths and they talk what they've been through.
00:11:03.759 --> 00:11:11.360
And it is it, it is it very emotional uh to hear what they've been through.
00:11:11.440 --> 00:11:16.799
And and if they hadn't found this group, then they would not be here today.
00:11:17.360 --> 00:11:30.240
And that is just like to me, he's like, if I helped anybody with with any of my stories, or if I drew anybody into this web that could help them so they're not so that they're still here, so they still want to come up.
00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:36.000
And I mean, to me, I I've got goosebumps right now, like the organization and what they're doing, you're saving lives.
00:11:36.159 --> 00:11:43.120
I mean, you guys are saving lives, really, and it's it is really an amazing Go ahead.
00:11:43.279 --> 00:11:43.600
Sorry.
00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:44.480
No, I'm sorry.
00:11:44.559 --> 00:11:49.919
I'm just I'm a little emotional, but it what you do is amazing, and I'm happy to be a little tiny part of it.
00:11:50.240 --> 00:11:53.600
I appreciate you being part of it, and thank you for that story.
00:11:53.679 --> 00:11:55.679
It does pull at your heartstrings.
00:11:56.000 --> 00:12:00.000
Yeah, um, what we do is an unconventional therapy, right?
00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:12.480
So we call it a different modality of healing, and so bringing veterans together through these ruck marches, and we call them silkies marches, which are aka ranger panties, aka PT shorts, aka running shorts.
00:12:12.639 --> 00:12:15.039
They're short, the shorter, the better.
00:12:15.440 --> 00:12:17.600
Hoochie daddy shorts, okay.
00:12:17.840 --> 00:12:19.200
And that's the humor in it, right?
00:12:19.279 --> 00:12:26.960
Because like we like, of course, we hate we hated wearing it in the military, but now we embraced it because like that was like that's our thing.
00:12:27.120 --> 00:12:33.759
So, and um, you see all these costumes and then all that stuff, you know, and it's unconventional, but it works.
00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:44.639
And there's several accounts and testimonies you could find on YouTube or on even on the irreverentwarriors.com page or any other IW group page on Facebook.
00:12:44.720 --> 00:12:47.360
You can find those testimonies that this works.
00:12:47.600 --> 00:12:57.279
Now, we have also expanded, and I don't think y'all know this because we don't just do rocks anymore, we have retreats, we have camping retreats, we have floats.
00:12:57.360 --> 00:13:01.759
Like I host a float in Florida once a year, except this year.
00:13:02.080 --> 00:13:07.759
We have we have fitness, and then we have we have cruises and destinations.
00:13:07.840 --> 00:13:10.559
So, like IW just came back from Alaska.
00:13:10.799 --> 00:13:13.679
There's another destination coming up in Cozumel.
00:13:14.080 --> 00:13:19.200
They're having another cruise that stops at Puerto Rico, they're gonna link up with the Puerto Rico team out there.
00:13:19.360 --> 00:13:26.240
So if you go on the website, there's all of these different modalities or active things that you can do.
00:13:26.399 --> 00:13:31.360
And the number one thing that we want is to get veterans out of that isolation.
00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:35.440
So once you get them out of that isolation, you get them out of that head.
00:13:35.679 --> 00:13:37.360
I have a friend that I met here.
00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:43.679
She is a marine and she's been through a lot, a lot of trauma, and she's on meds.
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:46.960
Okay, let me tell you about the prescriptions that the VA does.
00:13:47.120 --> 00:13:50.559
They just stack you medicine upon medicine upon medicine.
00:13:50.639 --> 00:13:53.679
I remember what one time I had like 15 prescription meds.
00:13:53.840 --> 00:13:56.639
That's just gonna make you go crazy like a zombie, right?
00:13:56.799 --> 00:14:06.080
And then in kind of a personal story of mine, I of course, I, you know, I had PTSD, I was a combat vet, and my, you know, I experienced a lot of things.
00:14:06.240 --> 00:14:09.679
So I had depression and anxiety, so they put me on these pills.
00:14:09.840 --> 00:14:16.879
Well, these pills, they like zapped my brain, turned like I felt like a zombie, and I was just like a shell of myself.
00:14:17.519 --> 00:14:25.759
So one day, this is when I was living in Hawaii, going to college, I just walked into traffic, not even thinking about looking both ways.
00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:29.039
Now that that wasn't just one day, it happened again.
00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:36.480
And then after I got safely across the street, and this is mind you, this is a busy, this is busy like highway kind of roads.
00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:39.759
They're not really highway, but it's busy street roads, right?
00:14:40.080 --> 00:14:43.039
Um, so not to walk out in traffic.
00:14:43.600 --> 00:14:47.519
Something clicked, and I was like, these medicines don't work at all.
00:14:47.919 --> 00:14:49.440
I need to get off of these.
00:14:49.600 --> 00:15:01.759
They actually made me more anxious, they made me more depressed, they made me pretty much the reason why they made me more depressed is because I couldn't feel anything, it was just blank, like I was just a shell of myself.
00:15:01.919 --> 00:15:07.200
So I got myself off these meds, and then when you don't take the meds, you're kind of like hooked on it.
00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:09.519
It's like kind of you're you're leaning on that.
00:15:09.600 --> 00:15:10.240
That's your crutch.
00:15:10.320 --> 00:15:13.519
You have to have the meds, or or I'm gonna go crazy, you know.
00:15:15.360 --> 00:15:17.919
And granted, some people do need them, right?
00:15:18.080 --> 00:15:20.320
But you don't need 15 of them, right?
00:15:20.399 --> 00:15:27.679
There's a limit, maybe three of them, you know, like give me one pill, and then like, or whatever.
00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:34.799
I don't need all these pills, so anyway, that's that's what happened with my story, and I'm not the only veteran that has that story.
00:15:34.960 --> 00:15:40.559
My friend, right now, she's a marine and she's gone all these pills and trying to go to therapy.
00:15:40.639 --> 00:15:46.320
She goes to the VA like it's her job three times a day, and she's still secluded and isolated.
00:15:46.559 --> 00:15:50.960
Uh it's so hard for me to get her out, and I was just I just was nagging her.
00:15:51.039 --> 00:15:53.840
I was like, just come out, just come out, just come out.
00:15:54.080 --> 00:15:56.799
And this last hike was her first one.
00:15:57.279 --> 00:16:01.279
Oh yeah, and she was so like she she was so thankful.
00:16:01.360 --> 00:16:03.519
She's like, So thank you so much, thank you so much.
00:16:03.600 --> 00:16:04.960
I really needed this.
00:16:05.200 --> 00:16:08.799
This is something that I didn't know that I needed.
00:16:09.039 --> 00:16:15.840
So it's a support group that that she absolutely needed, and and it's fabulous that you guys have that.
00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:18.080
I would everybody need support.
00:16:18.159 --> 00:16:21.600
We're all going through stuff, but in in your situation, obviously it's different.
00:16:21.679 --> 00:16:26.240
And I I think it's amazing that you guys have created this support group that actually saves lives.
00:16:26.399 --> 00:16:30.879
It absolutely there's statistics out there that show that it saves lives.
00:16:31.039 --> 00:16:34.000
Absolutely out of isolation, right?
00:16:34.159 --> 00:16:34.559
Yeah.
00:16:34.720 --> 00:16:39.840
So, and I will even say, even at this past hike, there were I noticed there were quite a few newer people.
00:16:39.919 --> 00:16:41.840
It's one of the hikes, there was a lot of people.
00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:48.639
We are at uh one of those destinations hikes because we're in North Florida, Jacksonville Beach, and it was a night hike.
00:16:48.799 --> 00:16:58.240
So if you're if you know anything about Florida, in the summertime, it's thunderstorms and it's humid, it sucks, the weather is so muggy, right?
00:16:58.399 --> 00:17:02.320
But at night, after the daytime thunderstorms are over, it's nice.
00:17:02.639 --> 00:17:06.480
So the actual like we were walking on the beach at 8:30 p.m.
00:17:06.640 --> 00:17:10.160
and that sun was still out, but it was still nice out there.
00:17:10.319 --> 00:17:15.279
So Jacksonville Beach, Florida is a destination hike that people want to come to.
00:17:15.359 --> 00:17:16.720
I mean, Florida in general.
00:17:16.880 --> 00:17:24.079
So we did have people come as far as Texas, Brownville, Houston, Alabama, South Carolina, all over Florida.
00:17:24.240 --> 00:17:28.000
And I was just surprised because you know, this was a last-minute hike.
00:17:28.079 --> 00:17:29.440
And I say hike, right?
00:17:29.680 --> 00:17:33.920
So whoever's listening out there, it's not, it's a two to three mile-hour pace.
00:17:34.079 --> 00:17:36.079
I have arthritis and plantar fasciitis.
00:17:36.160 --> 00:17:37.359
I'm an old lady, okay?
00:17:38.079 --> 00:17:38.960
You're not an old lady.
00:17:39.119 --> 00:17:41.359
I am 21 years old.
00:17:41.519 --> 00:17:44.000
I'm service connected, disable veteran.
00:17:44.079 --> 00:17:44.960
My back hurts.
00:17:45.119 --> 00:17:45.440
Okay.
00:17:45.599 --> 00:17:51.200
The on Sunday I called him to work and I told my my supervisor, and he he was a Marine.
00:17:51.279 --> 00:17:52.559
I said, My back hurts.
00:17:52.720 --> 00:17:54.640
I am not, I am laying down.
00:17:55.359 --> 00:18:04.240
Okay, and but it's so we get we have these hikes, and uh, this is the first time we allowed friends and family to hike on with us on Friday.
00:18:04.400 --> 00:18:09.119
So we did 2.2 miles, signifying the you know, the 22 a day.
00:18:09.279 --> 00:18:11.359
So 2.2 miles on that Friday night.
00:18:11.440 --> 00:18:14.480
We allowed spouses and children, and they had a great time.
00:18:14.640 --> 00:18:14.960
Yeah.
00:18:15.680 --> 00:18:18.400
Very first time doing it all around the country, the nation.
00:18:18.480 --> 00:18:20.880
We had a goal, they said do it in July.
00:18:21.119 --> 00:18:22.559
A lot of us did it in July.
00:18:22.720 --> 00:18:27.279
I just piggybacked my hike off of that, and I was like, okay, I got two months to plan this.
00:18:27.359 --> 00:18:28.240
Let's get it done.
00:18:28.319 --> 00:18:29.359
Let's get her done.
00:18:29.680 --> 00:18:30.000
Yep.
00:18:30.400 --> 00:18:32.160
They did it with that.
00:18:32.880 --> 00:18:33.519
Yeah, yeah.
00:18:33.599 --> 00:18:35.359
So so it was a good time.
00:18:35.519 --> 00:18:37.200
Lots of first timers for sure.
00:18:37.359 --> 00:18:42.640
And uh, our big hike is in March in the springtime, which is uh great weather here in Florida.
00:18:42.799 --> 00:18:43.759
It's really, really nice.
00:18:43.839 --> 00:18:46.799
If you've ever been to like San Diego, it kind of compares to that.
00:18:47.279 --> 00:18:48.079
Okay, yeah.
00:18:48.240 --> 00:18:50.960
So kind of like that in the spring.
00:18:51.359 --> 00:18:53.359
Um, so that's our bigger hike.
00:18:53.440 --> 00:18:58.799
We get last time we had 350 veterans, and they came from all all over the nation, including your.
00:18:59.359 --> 00:19:01.119
That is that's a great turnout.
00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:01.920
350.
00:19:02.480 --> 00:19:02.640
Wow.
00:19:02.720 --> 00:19:16.079
I think in the Pinehurst one, we had maybe it was one of the smaller ones, and they said and they knew that because this is a little golf club, like a Pinehurst Golf Club, though, is like where the PGA is a North Carolina.
00:19:16.160 --> 00:19:17.759
I'm sorry, I'm in North Carolina, yeah.
00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:19.279
I'm outside of Charlotte.
00:19:19.519 --> 00:19:25.759
Okay, um, and so this is kind of in the sand hills, but this is where they have like the PGA tour and stuff like that.
00:19:25.839 --> 00:19:30.720
So we're rolling around on these golf courses and we're hiking through it, and they are all in their silkies.
00:19:30.880 --> 00:19:32.000
It was just a fabulous time.
00:19:32.240 --> 00:19:35.759
I think that's Matt Reeves and what's his name?
00:19:35.920 --> 00:19:37.200
Oh my god, Kyle Page.
00:19:37.279 --> 00:19:38.400
Matt Reeves and Kyle Page.
00:19:39.119 --> 00:19:43.920
That is, and we had a great time, and we got to hang out at the country club afterwards at the pool.
00:19:44.319 --> 00:19:46.960
So it was not too, it was not too shabby.
00:19:47.279 --> 00:19:50.559
That's awesome because I like that you mentioned that you went to that hike.
00:19:50.720 --> 00:19:56.559
So most most rock marches or hikes we stop at parks, beaches, bars.
00:19:56.720 --> 00:19:57.839
We have bar and restaurants.
00:19:58.319 --> 00:19:59.519
We stopped at a bar.
00:19:59.839 --> 00:20:00.160
Okay.
00:20:00.559 --> 00:20:02.799
So I didn't know if you guys did or not.
00:20:02.880 --> 00:20:11.680
I know that there's a hike in in North Carolina where there is no bar stop or there's only one bar stop, and and and people, you know, you're not going to satisfy everyone.
00:20:11.839 --> 00:20:13.279
But we have people in recovery.
00:20:13.440 --> 00:20:26.400
So a lot of times in those hikes, if you are not a drinker, there's somebody that's that has an IW recovery on or like a sign on so that, or like I am hiking sober, you know, so you can find your people.
00:20:26.559 --> 00:20:29.440
So you don't always have to be around the browdy, crazy drunk.
00:20:29.680 --> 00:20:33.200
So we're trying to get away from that saying that it's a bar curl.
00:20:33.279 --> 00:20:36.559
It's not, it's a healing opportunity for veterans.
00:20:36.720 --> 00:20:39.119
So you can always find someone in your tribe.
00:20:39.279 --> 00:20:45.039
And the reason why we have those bracelets that says new first timers is that so everyone can come up to them and say hi.
00:20:45.519 --> 00:20:52.640
You know, you how you know how difficult it is to insert yourself in like this new scenery with new people you've never been around.
00:20:52.880 --> 00:20:55.759
You know, some people might not be inclined to talk.
00:20:55.920 --> 00:21:01.519
So you start up the you start up, you look for those first timer bands and you start conversations with them.
00:21:01.680 --> 00:21:04.960
Yeah, that is very cool because it would be difficult to come out.
00:21:05.680 --> 00:21:06.960
So I will ask this now.
00:21:07.039 --> 00:21:12.559
I know we you kind of started talking about how a hike, I know we we call it a hike, how a hike goes.
00:21:12.640 --> 00:21:17.039
So could you give, you know, anyone listening if they've never been to one or if it's their first time?
00:21:17.200 --> 00:21:24.319
It's like I noticed there was one first timer who was actually stayed back at the volunteer table with us because he was like, I'm a vet, but I came way unprepared.
00:21:24.400 --> 00:21:26.240
He's like, I had no idea what to expect.
00:21:26.400 --> 00:21:28.240
I'm not dressed for this, I'm not packed for this.
00:21:28.400 --> 00:21:29.680
Like, yeah, love it.
00:21:29.759 --> 00:21:31.119
I'll participate next time.
00:21:31.359 --> 00:21:33.279
So what should they expect?
00:21:33.359 --> 00:21:39.519
You know, on uh okay, so heike, so we would say like the rough march is on Saturdays, right?
00:21:39.680 --> 00:21:41.440
But it really starts on Friday.
00:21:41.680 --> 00:21:44.640
So Friday, it's really a whole weekend.
00:21:44.720 --> 00:21:49.599
So if you can get that whole weekend out or available, that would be great.
00:21:49.759 --> 00:21:53.680
I mean, a lot of people travel anyway, so that's why we make it the entire weekend.
00:21:53.839 --> 00:21:55.839
So Friday, meet and greet.
00:21:56.000 --> 00:21:59.759
Normally it'll be at a location or restaurant bar type thing.
00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:02.960
We have ours at the VFW, we partner with VFW.
00:22:03.039 --> 00:22:03.599
That's another thing.
00:22:04.000 --> 00:22:09.920
IW front-facing national sponsors is the veteran of foreign wars headquarters.
00:22:10.079 --> 00:22:14.480
They nationally sponsor IW under Grunt Style Foundation.
00:22:14.720 --> 00:22:18.880
So if you are a veteran listening, make sure you join your VFW.
00:22:18.960 --> 00:22:22.640
And if you if you're not a veteran of foreign war, you can join the auxiliary.
00:22:22.960 --> 00:22:25.440
Anyway, um that's good advice.
00:22:25.599 --> 00:22:26.960
Thank you for putting it out there.
00:22:27.119 --> 00:22:28.240
That's all great advice.
00:22:28.400 --> 00:22:29.759
Yep, absolutely.
00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:32.160
So we start with the Friday meeting greet.
00:22:32.240 --> 00:22:33.440
There's usually a theme.
00:22:33.599 --> 00:22:50.400
My theme last year was glow party, and yep, and then so this year kind of glow party too, because it was night hike, and then my theme the other year was we're in the county of Duval, so it was called Duval Dads in Denham or Denim Dads in Duval, something like that.
00:22:50.559 --> 00:22:53.839
So we all just wore like fun shorts, yeah.
00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:57.039
So there's some sort of theme to make it fun, yeah.
00:22:57.279 --> 00:23:06.000
And then and then the next day, usually it's a it's a day hike in the morning, so you meet up, I want to say like anywhere from 7 to 8 a.m.
00:23:06.319 --> 00:23:20.079
Yeah, and you don't have to come dress, you don't have you could just have walking shoes, you don't have to dress up in gear, you don't have to have metal plates, you don't have to have pouches, you don't have to have tactical, cool stuff, tactical gear, you know.
00:23:20.160 --> 00:23:21.039
You don't have to have that.
00:23:21.200 --> 00:23:25.680
Like a lot of times I just show up in my yoga pants and a shirt, you know.
00:23:25.839 --> 00:23:30.240
Number one, I can't really wear the silkeys, I got thighs, thunder thighs, okay?
00:23:30.640 --> 00:23:33.119
So the chafing is real.
00:23:33.359 --> 00:23:42.240
So yeah, so the next day we have the we we muster or we gather around, there's a safety brief, and then we go.
00:23:42.400 --> 00:23:44.000
So there's volunteers.
00:23:44.240 --> 00:23:49.519
You check in at the volunteer booth, there's merch available a lot of times, and sometimes there's not.
00:23:49.680 --> 00:23:54.240
There's always for my big hikes, I provide coffee and free breakfast.
00:23:54.480 --> 00:24:02.720
And then throughout the hike, you have your leader, and then you have other people on the same team who's kind of wrangling everyone together.
00:24:02.880 --> 00:24:06.240
We have support vehicles for people who can't walk far.
00:24:06.400 --> 00:24:12.559
So we also have a guy who's a triple amputee, no legs, one arm, and he does the hike with us.
00:24:12.640 --> 00:24:16.559
So this is for all kinds of bodies available.
00:24:16.880 --> 00:24:17.839
That's good to know.
00:24:18.240 --> 00:24:24.720
We have so we have what's called fallout vehicles: a truck in the front, truck in the back, and usually a truck in the middle or a golf cart in the middle.
00:24:24.880 --> 00:24:29.839
If you can't, if you can't hike anymore or walk anymore, fall out in one of those vehicles.
00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:31.119
It's it's perfectly normal.
00:24:31.200 --> 00:24:35.599
And I'm gonna tell you this I have arthritis and plantar fasciitis, those long hikes.
00:24:35.839 --> 00:24:37.440
I gotta have to fall out.
00:24:37.519 --> 00:24:38.480
I I can't do it.
00:24:38.559 --> 00:24:39.039
I can't.
00:24:39.119 --> 00:24:40.480
So I'm very thankful for that.
00:24:40.559 --> 00:24:46.960
We have volunteers throughout the hike passing out water, Gatorade, snacks, trail mix, chips, crackers.
00:24:47.200 --> 00:24:49.119
Okay, that's your girl.
00:24:49.200 --> 00:24:50.960
Look for me at one of your hikes.
00:24:51.359 --> 00:24:54.480
Yep, we have that, and then we have various stops.
00:24:54.640 --> 00:24:58.720
It could be anywhere from two to three stops to just one stop to five stops.
00:24:58.880 --> 00:25:00.880
It just depends on the hike route.
00:25:01.039 --> 00:25:03.119
What people want to know is what the hike route is.
00:25:03.200 --> 00:25:05.680
That is secret, it is a surprise.
00:25:05.839 --> 00:25:12.799
That's why it keeps you focused on making connections instead of focusing on where we're going next.
00:25:13.119 --> 00:25:13.839
Don't worry about it.
00:25:14.079 --> 00:25:15.920
We're just hanging out with your buddies.
00:25:16.160 --> 00:25:17.839
We'll we'll get there when I tell you.
00:25:18.000 --> 00:25:20.960
You know, normally I put out a lot of information.
00:25:21.039 --> 00:25:23.759
I tell them this 0.5 miles until our next stop.
00:25:24.000 --> 00:25:26.000
So just follow us, we'll go.
00:25:26.319 --> 00:25:34.640
So we'll for my hike, for instance, for the big hike, we hike around the block, we go down um a really busy street, we like woo-hoo.
00:25:35.039 --> 00:25:39.599
Everyone that says hi or in the balconies, we woo-hoo to them.
00:25:40.079 --> 00:25:42.720
Um, I do see a lot of cheering.
00:25:43.039 --> 00:25:53.839
I did love that, and I love and I record it, but I will say it it just is like it gives you kind of that American pride thing when you see these guys walking down, men and women.
00:25:53.920 --> 00:25:57.119
When I say guys, I'm from the north, so that means men and women.
00:25:58.720 --> 00:26:00.480
Yeah, but that's a southern thing.
00:26:00.559 --> 00:26:02.480
But yeah, you can say that in the north.
00:26:03.519 --> 00:26:06.160
But I have been down here long enough that I should probably be seeing.
00:26:06.480 --> 00:26:09.359
I do I do want to say that it is not politically affiliated.
00:26:09.440 --> 00:26:11.279
We do not represent any political party.
00:26:11.359 --> 00:26:18.240
So when you're seeing us in our gear, proud to be military veterans in American flag, I love that patriotic stuff.
00:26:18.400 --> 00:26:21.279
We are not affiliated with any uh political party.
00:26:22.079 --> 00:26:26.319
I love that we are, and we're not, and so we also give out these mission cards.
00:26:26.400 --> 00:26:28.160
So when people are asking, what are you doing?
00:26:28.319 --> 00:26:31.119
Somebody asked, is this a pride, gay pride parade?
00:26:31.440 --> 00:26:34.480
Because of all how the silky shorts, I get it.
00:26:37.920 --> 00:26:39.039
It's a fair question.
00:26:39.200 --> 00:26:40.079
It's a fair question.
00:26:41.359 --> 00:26:45.359
It is so we give out these, we give out the mission cards, it gives out our mission.
00:26:45.440 --> 00:26:49.759
We're preventing suicide, we're not spreading awareness, we're pre actively preventing it.
00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:52.319
So we go down the street, we woo-hoo around town.
00:26:52.480 --> 00:26:54.000
My first stop is the park.
00:26:54.160 --> 00:26:56.400
We this for bathroom breaks and all that stuff.
00:26:56.480 --> 00:26:58.079
Mind you, no open containers.
00:26:58.319 --> 00:27:03.119
And I don't care if who's drinking or everyone's a grown adult, just follow the rules.
00:27:03.359 --> 00:27:04.400
Yeah, you do you.
00:27:04.480 --> 00:27:08.240
Yeah, don't have open open containers, don't get too drunk, all that.
00:27:08.400 --> 00:27:11.279
So, first stop, bathroom break at the park.
00:27:11.440 --> 00:27:13.200
We take a picture, group photo.
00:27:13.279 --> 00:27:17.200
We do a big group photo, every single branch, female veterans, and then fogs.
00:27:17.359 --> 00:27:20.000
Fogs are effing old guys.
00:27:22.240 --> 00:27:26.480
And then and then somebody asked me at the highest year, they're like, What about the fogs?
00:27:26.559 --> 00:27:28.640
I said, Oh, you want a picture of the fogs?
00:27:28.720 --> 00:27:29.839
Okay, 50 and up.
00:27:30.319 --> 00:27:31.039
Get over here.
00:27:31.279 --> 00:27:34.960
She's like, I don't like you, Lynn.
00:27:35.039 --> 00:27:36.240
And I was like, Well, you asked for it.
00:27:36.319 --> 00:27:38.960
And I said, and I'm I'm right behind you, I'm almost there.
00:27:39.200 --> 00:27:44.799
So anyway, we take all the photos, make sure we have proof, you know, with our little banner.
00:27:45.039 --> 00:27:47.759
We walk down from the park, it's about 15 minutes off.
00:27:47.920 --> 00:27:49.680
We walk down the park, down the beach.
00:27:49.839 --> 00:27:52.880
So we go up the beach, and we're woo-hooing up and down the beach.
00:27:52.960 --> 00:27:57.920
You know, some of the Marines like to take a dip into the water, but the the unit doesn't stop.
00:27:58.160 --> 00:27:59.119
We keep going.
00:27:59.279 --> 00:28:02.480
Then we go out of the beach to our first bar stop.
00:28:02.640 --> 00:28:05.039
And so last year that was our lunch stop.
00:28:05.279 --> 00:28:07.920
And lunch was catered, it's provided, it's free.
00:28:08.160 --> 00:28:14.640
Then after that, so that's about an hour stop to give everyone time to rest and get drinks, close out the tabs, and all that stuff.
00:28:14.799 --> 00:28:17.200
After that, we get went to a place called Go Rut.
00:28:17.440 --> 00:28:21.039
They make all the tactical stuff like backpacks, play cards, and very cool.
00:28:21.359 --> 00:28:26.240
We had the Delta, the the founder of Delta Force came to speak.
00:28:26.640 --> 00:28:34.559
And yeah, and then they had obstacle courses for us where um Marines love this, where you pick heavy stuff up and put heavy stuff back down.
00:28:34.880 --> 00:28:36.319
Um I gotta better back.
00:28:37.200 --> 00:28:42.160
Um, so we had that, and then you know, push-ups, when you two push-ups, things like that.
00:28:42.400 --> 00:28:45.839
If a marine sees a pull-up bar, they start lining up.
00:28:46.079 --> 00:28:46.400
They do.
00:28:46.640 --> 00:28:46.880
Why?
00:28:47.039 --> 00:28:47.839
That's what Marine is.
00:28:48.000 --> 00:28:49.359
Because that's what they know.
00:28:49.920 --> 00:28:52.559
They're like, let's see how many pull-ups I can there.
00:28:53.119 --> 00:28:54.000
So they do that.
00:28:54.079 --> 00:29:09.039
So then our next stop, we went to um another bar, restaurant, grill, and then we hike back around to another bar, and then we hike back around around to the fire station where I coordinate with the fire station to hose us all down because we're almost at the end of our hike.
00:29:09.119 --> 00:29:15.039
So everybody like they they make the hose like in the you know, like that, and then everyone just runs through it, and it's just great.
00:29:15.119 --> 00:29:26.240
Everyone just runs through the water, and then make our way back around to the VFW, and then food is after snacks is provided.
00:29:26.480 --> 00:29:33.759
We have sandwiches and crackers and so of food and sustenance on these hikes.
00:29:34.079 --> 00:29:36.799
The only thing that's provided is alcohol.
00:29:36.960 --> 00:29:40.000
We don't we don't support the alcohol thing.
00:29:40.240 --> 00:29:42.000
I don't care if you do it, you know.
00:29:42.160 --> 00:29:46.400
I don't care if you but I'm not going to provide it for you, yeah.
00:29:46.640 --> 00:29:47.680
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:29:48.160 --> 00:29:55.119
And I will say each hike is different, like absolutely so so and so some sometimes they do, yeah.
00:29:55.200 --> 00:29:56.160
It's it's all different.
00:29:56.240 --> 00:30:02.960
So let me ask you this though you've been around and you've been Doing this, what would you say is your favorite?
00:30:03.279 --> 00:30:05.759
Was there a favorite hike that you had or favorite?
00:30:05.920 --> 00:30:06.880
Oh, okay, okay.
00:30:07.119 --> 00:30:09.200
I'm gonna that was an easy question.
00:30:09.279 --> 00:30:16.000
I'm gonna ask you outside of yours, is there a location or a hike that you really enjoy?
00:30:16.319 --> 00:30:19.680
I really like all the I mean, I'm just particular to Florida.
00:30:19.839 --> 00:30:22.559
So all the Florida hikes destined for Walton.
00:30:22.640 --> 00:30:27.759
We had one in Tampa for a while, South Florida and Fort Lauderdale, Key West hikes are is a destination hike in the world.
00:30:27.920 --> 00:30:29.039
The bomb, we're gonna be there.
00:30:29.200 --> 00:30:30.799
Suit Case David will be there.
00:30:30.880 --> 00:30:31.920
That's December 13th.
00:30:32.480 --> 00:30:33.759
That is December 13th guy.
00:30:34.160 --> 00:30:41.759
So I would say all of Florida ones, but once you get down, once you're done with that, every single hike has something different offered, different people.
00:30:42.000 --> 00:30:46.880
The we are the largest group of veterans out there is the GWAT vets.
00:30:47.200 --> 00:30:54.720
So there's so many of us out there weren't like I said, most 150 cities, so most major cities have it.
00:30:54.880 --> 00:30:56.880
But yeah, I'm not done with the hike weekend.
00:30:57.039 --> 00:30:59.920
So after the hike, oh sorry, I'm so sorry.
00:31:00.160 --> 00:31:01.839
Well, I think it's Saturday, so that's important.
00:31:02.559 --> 00:31:03.119
All right, all right.
00:31:03.519 --> 00:31:08.319
We do a post-hike brief, and then I'll usually there's um the raffle, you must be present to win.
00:31:08.480 --> 00:31:12.160
And then after that, there is an after party or a meetup.
00:31:12.319 --> 00:31:16.160
So there is an after party, you meet somewhere else, do you do the after party?
00:31:16.400 --> 00:31:21.839
Then when that night is over, probably like three in the morning, the next day people have to leave.
00:31:21.920 --> 00:31:23.519
So we meet up for brunch.
00:31:23.680 --> 00:31:25.920
We normally have a brunch spot meetup.
00:31:26.079 --> 00:31:28.640
So and then people go out their separate ways.
00:31:28.720 --> 00:31:35.680
So it is a full weekend from Friday through Sunday, starting with meet and greet, the hike, after party, and then brunch.
00:31:35.920 --> 00:31:38.640
So if you can make it a weekend, please go.
00:31:38.799 --> 00:31:42.240
I have I would say Tennessee hikes also wonderful hikes.
00:31:42.400 --> 00:31:45.599
I and it's the funny thing is like my family is from Texas.
00:31:45.759 --> 00:31:48.960
I still haven't made it out to Texas hike, and I need to.
00:31:49.680 --> 00:31:58.799
I used to live in Galveston and in Houston, and then my family's from Dallas and Fort Worth area, and then my in-laws live in Canyon Lake, you know, hill country area.
00:31:58.880 --> 00:32:00.880
So I came from Dallas, Fort Worth.
00:32:00.960 --> 00:32:04.720
So I've been trying to get my dad to the Dallas hike, he lives like an hour outside of there.
00:32:04.799 --> 00:32:10.319
So I've been trying to get him there, and uh, so I've been to the Virginia Beach hike, really great.
00:32:10.400 --> 00:32:14.480
I've been to the Wilmington hike when it was on Carolina Beach, awesome hike.
00:32:15.119 --> 00:32:18.079
Yeah, I went to Nashville, really good hike.
00:32:18.160 --> 00:32:19.440
Oh, it's really hilly, too.
00:32:19.519 --> 00:32:23.519
I would I would recommend ask them is it flat or is it hilly?
00:32:23.680 --> 00:32:26.160
So, you know, I'm from Florida, it's flat out here.
00:32:26.640 --> 00:32:30.079
Like I went up to Tennessee and I'm like, Whoa, what what are these mountains?
00:32:30.400 --> 00:32:36.960
And even in North Carolina, Pinehurst, we're Pinehurst is hilly, North Carolina is hilly, depending on when you go.
00:32:37.119 --> 00:32:38.799
So that is a great question to ask.
00:32:38.880 --> 00:32:41.440
And when you're on the hikes, is what is the terrain?
00:32:41.519 --> 00:32:42.880
Like, what am I looking at?
00:32:43.039 --> 00:32:49.759
But the good thing is, like you mentioned before, you can always come and do what you can just for the connection.
00:32:49.839 --> 00:32:54.640
And then if you can't make the actual full walk, you have those people coming in to help you out.
00:32:54.880 --> 00:32:58.240
But come still come for the for the camaraderie.
00:32:58.400 --> 00:33:00.880
So you can ride on the the fallout vehicles.
00:33:00.960 --> 00:33:10.079
The fallout vehicle is gonna stay with the element throughout the whole hike, so you can ride in you can still ride with the element right throughout the whole thing.
00:33:10.160 --> 00:33:18.319
They're not gonna take you back until like there's a long break if you need it, but you can go jump in one of the trucks in the beds or a golf cart or something.
00:33:18.400 --> 00:33:21.119
It just depends on what they have available for every hike.
00:33:21.440 --> 00:33:24.480
So I know I've talked about all the different locations and everything.
00:33:24.559 --> 00:33:31.359
So what is and like I know I'm personally part of like maybe 15 different Facebook groups, but what is the best way for someone to get started?
00:33:31.519 --> 00:33:32.799
Would you recommend like the website?
00:33:32.960 --> 00:33:34.480
Do they start searching Facebook?
00:33:34.640 --> 00:33:36.000
How was the best way to find a hike?
00:33:36.240 --> 00:33:38.559
Well, it depends on what your social media outlet is.
00:33:38.720 --> 00:33:42.000
For us millennials, we like Facebook because we're old, right?
00:33:42.240 --> 00:33:47.519
So like thank you for being so direct about that because you're right, it works.
00:33:47.759 --> 00:33:50.240
You're born in the 1900s, okay, Denise.
00:33:50.400 --> 00:33:53.119
If you're born in the 1900s, you are old, okay?
00:33:53.359 --> 00:33:54.000
I know.
00:33:54.240 --> 00:33:56.799
I just check your ID.
00:33:56.880 --> 00:33:59.359
All they have to look is, oh, there's a 19 there.
00:33:59.440 --> 00:34:00.559
You're good, right?
00:34:00.720 --> 00:34:01.200
I know.
00:34:01.359 --> 00:34:02.640
Yeah, you're born in the 1900s.
00:34:02.799 --> 00:34:04.240
We're all born in the 1900s.
00:34:04.400 --> 00:34:05.440
We like Facebook.
00:34:05.599 --> 00:34:07.599
I, you know, that's how we keep in touch.
00:34:07.759 --> 00:34:16.320
Now we have to keep in mind that there are like Gen Zs also that are at our hike, and then we have older Zenyels and X and some boomers as well.
00:34:16.639 --> 00:34:20.320
Love that you know all the names of the generations, first of all, because I don't know any of those.
00:34:20.400 --> 00:34:20.960
So thank you.
00:34:21.679 --> 00:34:24.559
It just depends on what outlet you get your media.
00:34:25.199 --> 00:34:25.519
I agree.
00:34:26.159 --> 00:34:28.320
Irreverentwarriors.com, the website.
00:34:28.480 --> 00:34:29.360
Is it from Facebook?
00:34:29.519 --> 00:34:30.320
Is it from Twitter?
00:34:30.400 --> 00:34:31.280
Is it from TikTok?
00:34:31.440 --> 00:34:32.639
Is it from Instagram?
00:34:33.039 --> 00:34:35.119
So all the information is there.
00:34:35.280 --> 00:34:38.639
Just look up Irreverent Warriors at whatever social media you have.
00:34:38.800 --> 00:34:41.599
Now, personally, I want to say that we are heavily on Facebook.
00:34:41.679 --> 00:34:42.559
We have lots of groups.
00:34:42.639 --> 00:34:50.320
So whatever city you're at, or or even state you're at, put North Carolina Irreverent Warriors, put South Carolina Irreverent Warriors, whatever.
00:34:50.480 --> 00:34:52.000
It's all gonna be out there.
00:34:52.159 --> 00:34:58.400
Also, Grunt Style Foundation, we are under, we are with, we're partners with Gruntstyle Foundation.
00:34:58.480 --> 00:35:00.719
Like we have merged with them.
00:35:01.039 --> 00:35:05.599
So And we will put all of this out there for on our podcast.
00:35:05.760 --> 00:35:09.599
Speaking of podcasts, though, my girl has a podcast, Lynn.
00:35:09.760 --> 00:35:24.559
I do, it's called the Mental Health Warrior, and we record live every Wednesdays, and then it's aired also again on Fridays and Sundays on the iHeartRadio app, Spotify, and Audacity app, or any apps that you get your podcasts on.
00:35:24.800 --> 00:35:26.639
And we will link those as well.
00:35:27.039 --> 00:35:33.199
So going into your podcast, I know you're so passionate about irreverent warriors, and you said I could talk all day.
00:35:33.280 --> 00:35:35.119
You you I could I could talk all day.
00:35:35.760 --> 00:35:36.559
All day long.
00:35:36.880 --> 00:35:40.239
But we do want to give you a shout out to your podcast.
00:35:40.400 --> 00:35:44.480
But so now moving towards, and we will link your podcast too.
00:35:44.639 --> 00:35:53.760
Now I have a question like, what was the most like person, what was the most emotional guest or something, something that changed you on your podcast?
00:35:53.840 --> 00:35:58.400
Because you have veterans on your podcast and you hear their stories and you hear things that happen.
00:35:58.639 --> 00:36:09.840
Like, is there any one in particular that like really moved you or you know I started my podcasting in 2020 when we were in during COVID dark times, yep.
00:36:10.000 --> 00:36:12.079
I had nobody, I didn't even know about IW.
00:36:12.320 --> 00:36:13.920
I didn't know about these veteran groups.
00:36:14.079 --> 00:36:15.760
So I found these veteran groups.
00:36:15.840 --> 00:36:18.960
So I'm with veteran trash talk, so you can link them also.
00:36:19.119 --> 00:36:20.400
Veterantrashtalk.com.
00:36:20.480 --> 00:36:22.960
On there, you can find all of our podcasts in our merch.
00:36:23.280 --> 00:36:26.079
Um, shameless plug, right?
00:36:26.400 --> 00:36:27.280
But no worries.
00:36:28.800 --> 00:36:35.519
One of the first women female veteran podcasts, and we talked about military sexual trauma.
00:36:35.760 --> 00:36:46.000
And unfortunately, one out of every three persons, this is women and men, have gotten the R words assaulted.
00:36:46.719 --> 00:36:51.760
So one out of N, I'm one of them, and and one out of three, keep that in mind.
00:36:52.159 --> 00:36:53.199
Keep that in mind.
00:36:53.519 --> 00:36:59.360
So when you're talking about what is the most moving or like what's the most heart-wrenching, I would say that's one.
00:36:59.519 --> 00:37:02.079
I mean, I've had people on my podcast that don't walk.
00:37:02.239 --> 00:37:19.199
You know, I've had people like I have from all different spectrums of different traumas, just hearing their stories, and like at the end of the day, it's all about improving your own mental health and what you're doing to make it better and to destigmatize this, right?
00:37:19.360 --> 00:37:28.000
And so um fortunately, the VA has taken some strides that there are actual clinics, and this is why it's a problem in the military.
00:37:28.239 --> 00:37:30.719
Actual clinics that are called MST clinics.
00:37:31.199 --> 00:37:32.960
And what does MST stand for?
00:37:33.199 --> 00:37:34.639
Military sexual trauma.
00:37:35.199 --> 00:37:36.559
Military sexual trauma.
00:37:36.719 --> 00:37:40.880
It is a big, big, big, big deal, and you can get PTSD from that.
00:37:41.199 --> 00:37:43.679
So they have clinics like that.
00:37:43.840 --> 00:37:49.199
So when I started my podcast, it was about the stigmatism about women in the military, right?
00:37:49.280 --> 00:37:55.440
So a long time ago, people be like, Oh, you're so pretty, and you're female, you're not veterans.
00:37:56.000 --> 00:37:57.840
Oh, I want a veteran discount.
00:37:57.920 --> 00:37:58.960
Okay, where's your husband?
00:37:59.119 --> 00:38:01.440
Like, uh, no, period.
00:38:01.519 --> 00:38:02.159
I am the vet.
00:38:02.480 --> 00:38:03.440
I am veteran.
00:38:04.000 --> 00:38:05.280
Disrespectful, right?
00:38:05.679 --> 00:38:14.159
Yeah, well, and then I remember one year uh it was uh uh Fabletics said we will only give discounts to male veterans or something.
00:38:14.320 --> 00:38:14.639
What?
00:38:14.880 --> 00:38:18.159
Yeah, and it was like a big All right, I'm gonna boycott Fabletics.
00:38:19.519 --> 00:38:21.119
They corrected themselves, okay.
00:38:21.360 --> 00:38:22.480
They corrected themselves.
00:38:22.800 --> 00:38:23.440
All right, good.
00:38:23.840 --> 00:38:26.079
I was about to write a strongly worded letter.
00:38:28.719 --> 00:38:35.840
When it comes to veteran, it's everyone, and so that was one of the leading podcasts who start that that movie.
00:38:36.079 --> 00:38:36.719
That's amazing.
00:38:37.039 --> 00:38:38.000
I am the veteran.
00:38:38.079 --> 00:38:39.679
I am I'm I'm not congratulating.
00:38:41.039 --> 00:39:01.519
So I uh you know, a lot of us have that sticker, like even on my my decals, like my sticker on my truck, it says Navy Woman Veteran or woman Navy veteran or something like that, just to make sure because I'll park in you know veteran parking spots or disabled parking spots, and they'd be like, Well, who's a veteran at?
00:39:01.760 --> 00:39:05.760
Like, mother, you got me this, right?
00:39:07.039 --> 00:39:14.320
Listen, um, I'm glad that you're trained in like I mean, you're like, do you really want to say that to a combat veteran?
00:39:14.639 --> 00:39:14.960
Right?
00:39:15.360 --> 00:39:16.719
Like, I can kick your ass.
00:39:17.360 --> 00:39:20.159
I mean that parking for your husband.
00:39:20.400 --> 00:39:23.440
Like, let me give you the bird.
00:39:23.599 --> 00:39:26.400
So even I I had so that was my first podcast.
00:39:26.639 --> 00:39:33.760
Now I have professionals that are veteran business owners that also help to work improve mental health.
00:39:33.920 --> 00:39:41.679
I'll have people who have camps, people who have farms, people who have who have equine therapy, people who do cold plunge therapy, different modalities.
00:39:41.840 --> 00:39:52.000
I have um healthcare professionals that come on, I have business owners that go out there, I have models that do pinups, you know, on my podcast.
00:39:52.320 --> 00:39:55.280
I have widows of 22 a day.
00:39:55.440 --> 00:40:04.800
I have combat veteran spouse survivors, you know, those those white star survivors, I think that's what they called, are still, I don't know.
00:40:04.960 --> 00:40:07.199
Don't don't don't persecute me.
00:40:07.519 --> 00:40:13.679
The point is too, but the point is it seems like you your your support groups are phenomenal.
00:40:13.920 --> 00:40:24.320
And we're gonna link all of them so that as you can, if you need any kind of support, we can find Len will help you reach out to any support, and she will get you where you want to be.
00:40:24.639 --> 00:40:29.119
But in wrapping up, do you have anything else?
00:40:29.280 --> 00:40:33.280
Like, is there a a hike going forward that you think everybody should be at?
00:40:33.440 --> 00:40:35.280
Or it's just really they're all amazing.
00:40:35.360 --> 00:40:36.239
Like, what do you think?
00:40:36.320 --> 00:40:37.679
What are your final closing points?
00:40:38.400 --> 00:40:44.239
If you want to look at a hike, or you want to find one near you, go to irreverent warriors.com.
00:40:44.400 --> 00:40:49.039
On there, you can search either communities or search next event near you.
00:40:49.280 --> 00:40:54.159
So you can always find something near you that is probably drivable and stuff.
00:40:54.239 --> 00:40:57.920
And so, like I said, the actually the hikes cost either five dollars or for free.
00:40:58.079 --> 00:41:04.000
Most people sign up for free, and then uh food and all that stuff is food and water and Gatorade is provided.
00:41:04.159 --> 00:41:04.400
Right.
00:41:04.639 --> 00:41:07.519
So you really don't need any expense other than gas.
00:41:07.760 --> 00:41:14.480
Most veterans will get to a hike and they'll say, Let's share a room, or or you can get to a hike and be like, I don't have a place to stay.
00:41:14.559 --> 00:41:16.239
Can I have a couch to crash on?
00:41:16.480 --> 00:41:24.639
And so you don't need any much that much expenses.com, you can find everything on there.
00:41:24.880 --> 00:41:28.480
As far as podcasts go, you can find veteran trash talk.com.
00:41:28.639 --> 00:41:29.760
Okay, you can go on there.
00:41:30.079 --> 00:41:38.320
One thing I do want to just kind of remind people, and maybe you can also speak on this, these do happen every weekend all across the country, world, etc.
00:41:38.719 --> 00:41:41.679
So there's always an opportunity, you know, somewhere.
00:41:42.559 --> 00:41:43.760
Absolutely, absolutely.
00:41:43.840 --> 00:41:51.840
We have one in Vegas in December, so even in December, and even when you were talking about some of those events, well, I don't know if anyone in Florida is listening.
00:41:51.920 --> 00:41:53.840
I know they're having Epcot Day coming up.
00:41:53.920 --> 00:41:57.599
I know South Florida's coming up, Key West is still later this year.
00:41:57.679 --> 00:42:00.639
So if you're in the Florida area, there's definitely some events happening.
00:42:01.199 --> 00:42:02.639
Absolutely, absolutely.
00:42:02.800 --> 00:42:05.599
I want to thank you guys for having me on the podcast so much.
00:42:05.760 --> 00:42:09.599
And if you guys need anything, the listeners out there, find me online.
00:42:09.920 --> 00:42:14.000
Pacific Tita is what I go by, my online persona.
00:42:14.079 --> 00:42:15.840
And I also have a link tree out there.
00:42:15.920 --> 00:42:20.400
Just look for Pacific Tita, like Pacific, like the ocean, Tita T-I-T-A.
00:42:20.960 --> 00:42:23.920
And we'll absolutely tag all of these on our podcast.
00:42:24.159 --> 00:42:26.400
So thank you so much, Len, for being here.
00:42:26.480 --> 00:42:29.039
And I think that's gonna wrap up our episode today.
00:42:29.280 --> 00:42:31.760
So, guys, there's support out there.
00:42:32.000 --> 00:42:32.800
Go find it.
00:42:32.960 --> 00:42:33.519
Absolutely.
00:42:33.679 --> 00:42:38.800
And thank you for your service, Len, and thank you for your service to all of our veterans out there.
00:42:39.039 --> 00:42:39.519
Thank you.
00:42:39.840 --> 00:42:40.239
Yeah.
