EP02: European Perspectives for Western Balkan Countries - Challenges and Opportunities
A discussion with Mag. Sebastian Schäffer Director of the Institute of the Danube Region and Central Europe(IDM)
Following its latest expansion, the process of EU enlargement remains ongoing. Notably, many Western Balkan nations have been awaiting EU membership for several years, with some having been in this position for over a decade. In this episode of our podcast, we will explore the prospective EU membership of these predominantly post-Yugoslav countries. Our guest is Sebastian Schaeffer, the Director of the Institute of the Danube Region and Central Europe, and a distinguished expert on Balkan affairs.
During our discussion, we seek answers to several key questions: What challenges and opportunities do Western Balkan countries face regarding their entry into the eurozone, and how does monetary union impact their economic stability? What alternatives to EU membership are available to these countries? Should they adopt a common strategy, or would it be more effective for each country to pursue individual approaches? To what extent could geopolitical factors, such as the growing influence of Russia and China in the region, affect the EU's enlargement process in the Western Balkans? Lastly, how does religious diversity in the Western Balkans shape the political and social dynamics within the region and its integration into the EU?
