A stage 4 brain Glioblastoma cancer diagnosis can make the world feel brutally small and painfully loud, and it can also reveal a quieter truth underneath everything. We still have a choice in how we meet our inner life. Shannon Sullivan can’t record and edit right now, so her friend Chris Collins presented the gift. If she were to write her talk and guided practice, he would take care of the rest of recording, narrating and editing the beautiful practice.
First, we step into the life of Siddhartha as he becomes the Buddha, not by escaping suffering, but by turning toward it with clear eyes and an open heart. From there, Shannon shares what it means to move from being the one who holds others to becoming the one who must receive help from a partner, family, friends, students, and community. When new setbacks bring her back to the hospital and into deeper grief, she finds an unexpected doorway: Rumi’s “The Guest House,” a radical invitation to welcome every emotion as a visitor with something to teach.
Then we are guided into a meditation practice to honor each feeling that steps forward. The start of our hands on our hearts, breath as an anchor, and space for every part of ourselves are honored including fear, sorrow, anger, hope, and relief. If you’ve been searching for a guided meditation for grief, mindfulness for anxiety, emotional healing, spiritual resilience, or coping tools during illness and stress, this is for you. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs steady support, and leave a review telling us what feeling you’re ready to welcome today.

00:00:02.479 --> 00:00:05.839
Hi, thank you so much for joining me today.
00:00:05.839 --> 00:00:15.039
I'm Shannon, and this is Starseed Evolution, bringing the wisdom and insight of the cosmos to you.
00:00:15.039 --> 00:00:17.679
I'm grateful that you're listening.
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:29.199
Welcome.
00:00:29.199 --> 00:00:35.359
This is Chris Collins, narrating on behalf of my friend, Shannon Sullivan.
00:00:35.359 --> 00:00:43.840
Since November of 2025, Shannon has been bravely facing one of the most difficult hardships life can offer.
00:00:43.840 --> 00:00:46.479
Stage 4 brain cancer.
00:00:46.479 --> 00:00:57.200
Through it all, she has done what she always does, living life with love, hope, and goodness.
00:00:57.200 --> 00:01:08.799
She has not once forgotten about her community here, and while she cannot record and edit her own meditation right now, she has written many words of wisdom to share.
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:12.719
This recording will have several sections.
00:01:12.719 --> 00:01:17.280
In a moment, I will begin with a poem chosen by Shannon.
00:01:17.280 --> 00:01:21.920
Then I will read a short talk about Buddha prepared by Shannon.
00:01:21.920 --> 00:01:31.760
Following that, you will hear Shannon's words about her inspiring and challenging story along with some of the lessons and wisdom she can share.
00:01:31.760 --> 00:01:38.799
Finally, we will conclude with a beautiful guided meditation practice that Shannon has written.
00:01:38.799 --> 00:01:46.000
Let it relax you, inspire you, guide you, and help you through your own challenges.
00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:52.560
Please listen along as I share Shannon's wisdom, experience, and teachings.
00:01:52.560 --> 00:01:55.200
Let's begin.
00:01:55.200 --> 00:02:07.200
The Color of Hope by Pian.
00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:21.759
In the quiet heart of the forest, where rivers remember ancient songs, there is a color that never fades, the deep blue of hope.
00:02:21.759 --> 00:02:34.159
It lives in the morning sky, in the wings of the butterfly, in the eyes of those who wait patiently for a new season to arrive.
00:02:34.159 --> 00:02:47.280
The elders say blue is the spirit of healing, the breath between sorrow and joy, the sacred path where broken hearts learn to bloom again.
00:02:47.280 --> 00:03:02.879
She walks beneath the blue horizon, carrying the dreams of her ancestors, carrying the prayers of her people, carrying the belief that tomorrow can still bring beauty.
00:03:02.879 --> 00:03:11.280
The butterfly whispers beside her, Do not fear the darkness.
00:03:11.280 --> 00:03:15.439
Even the longest night must surrender to the dawn.
00:03:15.439 --> 00:03:26.879
So she follows the blue light forward through forests, rivers, and memories, for hope is not a distant place.
00:03:26.879 --> 00:03:39.360
It is the quiet strength inside her, the ancient song in her soul, the promise that life continues to open its wings.
00:03:39.360 --> 00:04:09.439
To understand how to move more deeply into our own pain or discomfort, let's start from the larger world around us.
00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:15.039
Then we will step into how we ourselves face these difficulties.
00:04:15.039 --> 00:04:25.839
With that deeper understanding, we will then journey into a guided meditation to be present with ourselves by becoming loving listeners.
00:04:25.839 --> 00:04:34.959
Siddhartha, who became the enlightened Buddha, was born in 563 BCE.
00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:42.000
When he was born, he lived within the beautiful housing of his family.
00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:45.519
He had all he needed to live happily.
00:04:45.519 --> 00:04:50.959
There was never a time he needed anything that he wasn't gifted from his family.
00:04:50.959 --> 00:05:01.680
As Siddhartha grew into his teenage years and towards adulthood, he began to want to know more people, not just outside as well.
00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:09.279
One day, without telling his parents, Siddhartha went out of the gate and out into the city.
00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:13.600
What he expected was not what appeared before him.
00:05:13.600 --> 00:05:17.040
Instead of joy, he found suffering.
00:05:17.040 --> 00:05:23.680
The anguish and fear surrounded many of the persons who seemed to be living on the streets.
00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:29.600
His heart broke in half, and yet he knew not to look away and ignore it.
00:05:29.600 --> 00:05:35.199
Siddhartha's heart opened to allow being present for others.
00:05:35.199 --> 00:05:43.199
He let his parents know this new path was his to follow, and that he needed to head away from home.
00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:57.040
Siddhartha's initial exploration was to try many different types of spiritual or religious practices, to see what helped him move past himself into the presence of others.
00:05:57.040 --> 00:06:02.800
After many attempts, one day he went to sleep and dreamt.
00:06:02.800 --> 00:06:14.160
The dream revealed to him that it was time to stop, to be silent, to sit with the wisdom of the Bodhi tree, and to move within himself.
00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:20.399
Once this happened, he realized it could not be everyone he helped.
00:06:20.399 --> 00:06:29.680
Those he could be present for would be those who had the courage to be on the path to understanding life as more than the human self.
00:06:29.680 --> 00:06:33.279
Life is also its spiritual self.
00:06:33.279 --> 00:06:45.360
The image, the feeling, the presence spiritually present within Buddha, under his magic of the Bodhi tree, is always present within ourselves.
00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:52.639
Finding peace within ourselves, no matter what emotions are running through us, is the gift.
00:06:52.639 --> 00:07:20.240
Now, as we travel closer inside this story, we can learn to see the wholeness of ourselves.
00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:33.360
I would like to share what has come forward for me, not because I expect to be treated with kindness, but instead how I use these unexpected hard times to learn even more about myself.
00:07:33.360 --> 00:07:39.360
This then might be helpful for you as we then move into the guided meditation.
00:07:39.360 --> 00:07:52.959
In November of 2025, I, Janet Sullivan, was unexpectedly diagnosed with glioblastoma left brain temporal stage 4 cancer.
00:07:52.959 --> 00:08:02.959
For the first time in my life, I was moving away from the position of being present for each of my clients and students for 25 years.
00:08:02.959 --> 00:08:08.639
I have always seen myself as being the one who gives to others.
00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:19.279
In this diagnosis, it required me and my partner to focus on the treatments for me to be open to receiving assistance from everyone around me.
00:08:19.279 --> 00:08:25.519
My partner, my family, my friends, my community, my students.
00:08:25.519 --> 00:08:32.240
At first, I was open emotionally to all the love and support.
00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:36.799
It was my first experience of receiving so much support from others.
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:45.039
Food, cards, being driven everywhere by my partner Todd and my friends' financial support through donations.
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:58.879
But then, in June of 2026, a hard pattern of events occurred four times that kept me having to return to the hospital for care and discovering new challenges to face.
00:08:58.879 --> 00:09:07.200
I became lost in the sadness and challenges of it, where it was easier to be in deep spaces of grief.
00:09:07.200 --> 00:09:22.799
One night, a door opened up within me, and my angelic team whispered to me instead of hiding from the feelings, it would be better to open the door to them all and listen.
00:09:22.799 --> 00:09:32.000
I sat in the quiet darkness and was gifted the poem called The Guest House, written by the poet Rumi.
00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.440
The poem flowed around me.
00:09:35.440 --> 00:09:39.360
This being human is a guest house.
00:09:39.360 --> 00:09:46.639
Every morning, a new arrival, a joy, a depression, a meanness.
00:09:46.639 --> 00:09:51.919
Some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.
00:09:51.919 --> 00:10:01.759
Welcome and entertain them all, even if they're a crowd of sorrows who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture.
00:10:01.759 --> 00:10:05.519
Still treat each guest honorably.
00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:09.200
He may be clearing you out for some new delight.
00:10:09.200 --> 00:10:18.000
The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:25.279
Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.
00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:33.759
As I sat in the darkness allowing the poem to fill me, I shifted into meditation.
00:10:33.759 --> 00:10:39.360
My present self was inside the home and heard a knock at the door.
00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:43.519
I walked to the door and opened it.
00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:50.720
Outside it was every year of myself, each time wanting to be recognized.
00:10:50.720 --> 00:10:56.080
I stepped back and welcomed each part of me into the living room of our home.
00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:02.080
I closed the door and was ready to create an organized circle for us.
00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:04.879
This is not what happened, however.
00:11:04.879 --> 00:11:14.159
There was no holding back just as chaos occurred in Rumi's poem, so it happened in the reflection of the meditation.
00:11:14.159 --> 00:11:18.720
I allowed it to just flow through me.
00:11:18.720 --> 00:11:37.279
My present adult self and my higher self stood to the corner and just listened and watched all the parts of myself, whether it was pain or joy or sorrow or fear or hope or despair, we let it be.
00:11:37.279 --> 00:11:50.320
As all the energy flowed and diminished during the meditation, my present self looked to the door of our home and saw the front door was open.
00:11:50.320 --> 00:11:58.000
I looked past the door to the patio, and beyond the patio to a path in the grass.
00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:07.519
The grass path was woven upwards onto a hill where at the very top stood a beautiful bodhi tree.
00:12:07.519 --> 00:12:15.600
Under the tree sat Buddha, breathing deeply, with relaxed shoulders and an open heart.
00:12:15.600 --> 00:12:28.080
Each part of me inside our home was ready to leave the emotions behind and walk with me up to sit under the Bodhi tree with Buddha in a loving and open silence.
00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:35.279
Around the tree with Buddha were soft places of leaves and grass.
00:12:35.279 --> 00:12:42.559
Each part of myself created loving groups to hold one another in connection and comfort.
00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:52.559
We all sat together under the Bodhi tree among the gentle breath of Buddha, which made the soft wind shimmer the leaves.
00:12:52.559 --> 00:12:55.360
The gentleness surrounded us.
00:12:55.360 --> 00:13:04.559
As I took a breath in and exhaled, slowly my body relaxed and came back to my present self.
00:13:04.559 --> 00:13:13.200
I opened my eyes and felt the hardest energy had shifted, allowing my heart to lighten.
00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:22.879
I breathed deeply and thanked my angelic team and Rumi for his poetry, and Buddha for his presence.
00:13:22.879 --> 00:13:31.279
The understanding in this moment was not that this meditation was a one-time fixed experience.
00:13:31.279 --> 00:13:43.759
My angelic team internally explained to me that when these feelings come up again, I now have a tool to use that allows those parts of myself to be heard.
00:13:43.759 --> 00:14:16.559
Having explored from the outside with our teacher Siddhartha, who became Buddha, and having moved closer through my experience of being present to difficult emotions, we can now move into you, getting to be more present with your emotional body and what it wants to share with you.
00:14:16.559 --> 00:14:23.200
Let us now move deeply by going into a guided journey of presence.
00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:32.799
Look for a comfortable place to be seated.
00:14:32.799 --> 00:14:41.440
In this meditation, it is better to remain present to the parts of yourself that are wanting attention.
00:14:41.440 --> 00:14:46.399
Take the next minute to find a comfortable place to sit.
00:14:46.399 --> 00:15:54.399
Let's do that once again.
00:15:54.399 --> 00:15:58.159
Take a deep breath in and exhale.
00:15:58.159 --> 00:16:06.480
Now when you are ready, place both of your hands on your chest.
00:16:06.480 --> 00:16:13.519
Feel your energy moving to your heart, and then gently back to your hands.
00:16:13.519 --> 00:16:24.000
What emotions are currently being shared with you from your body, from times of the past or present?
00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:31.440
In the next moments of quiet, allow those parts of you to come forward.
00:16:31.440 --> 00:18:45.680
Taking a deep breath in and then exhaling fully, you begin to hear the beautiful poem by Rumi, the guest house.
00:18:45.680 --> 00:18:50.319
This being human is a guest house.
00:18:50.319 --> 00:18:53.599
Every morning a new arrival.
00:18:53.599 --> 00:18:57.920
A joy, a depression, a meanness.
00:18:57.920 --> 00:19:03.119
Some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.
00:19:03.119 --> 00:19:06.799
Welcome and entertain them all.
00:19:06.799 --> 00:19:13.440
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture.
00:19:13.440 --> 00:19:17.599
Still, treat each guest honorably.
00:19:17.599 --> 00:19:21.039
He may be clearing you out for some new delight.
00:19:21.039 --> 00:19:26.400
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
00:19:26.400 --> 00:19:30.960
Meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
00:19:30.960 --> 00:19:38.559
Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.
00:19:38.559 --> 00:19:47.039
The present part of you inside the house feels the opening of your heart.
00:19:47.039 --> 00:19:51.839
You hear a knock on the door and go to open it up.
00:19:51.839 --> 00:19:57.920
You see the ages of yourself who are present today, allowing them inside.
00:19:57.920 --> 00:20:04.079
Each part of yourself begins to share with you all the emotions that are present.
00:20:04.079 --> 00:20:13.359
Whether it is joy or pain, anger or grief, hope or despair, enough or not enough.
00:20:13.359 --> 00:20:21.359
In the next moments of silence, allow all the emotions within you to be expressed.
00:20:21.359 --> 00:22:25.119
Inhale now and slowly exhale.
00:22:25.119 --> 00:22:36.880
As all of you are now present for each other and having moved through the emotions, a calmness settles through all of you.
00:22:36.880 --> 00:22:54.160
You now all look at the front door and see that it is opened up, showing all of you that in the near distance is a beautiful bodhi tree, and sitting beneath its branches is the calm and loving presence of Buddha.
00:22:54.160 --> 00:23:06.880
You all stand together in love and in honor and begin to leave the home and walk to the trail together, coming up the hill to the Bodhi tree.
00:23:06.880 --> 00:23:16.079
The Bodhi shines brightly in the sun and waves its branches, inviting all of you to sit under the branches.
00:23:16.079 --> 00:23:29.039
As you gather under the branches and Buddha sits with you, the silence is not out of being quiet, but out of holding a loving space for all of your emotions.
00:23:29.039 --> 00:23:39.440
Take this next moment of silence to be a time where Buddha honors all the parts of you and holds each emotion lovingly.
00:23:39.440 --> 00:23:58.480
During this time, receive the loving energy as a gift which is under the beautiful blue sky with the passing by of white loving clouds under the long arms of the Bodhi tree and the strength of Buddha.
00:23:58.480 --> 00:25:56.000
Inhale slowly and exhale gently.
00:25:56.000 --> 00:26:04.880
And one more time taking a deep breath, opening your lungs, and slowly releasing.
00:26:04.880 --> 00:26:11.200
As you look around, you see now that it is just you.
00:26:11.200 --> 00:26:17.759
All of you has come back together, grateful to be now back together again.
00:26:17.759 --> 00:26:29.759
You feel the loving energy around you and inside of yourself, knowing you can come back to this space when emotions arise again.
00:26:29.759 --> 00:26:42.880
Placing both hands now once again on your heart, you thank your higher self and Buddha's presence for walking on this journey with you.
00:26:42.880 --> 00:26:55.279
As you take one more deep breath in and move into an exhale, you find yourself back into today.
00:27:27.599 --> 00:27:34.880
Know that when we hold space for each part of ourselves, we create a deeper understanding of ourselves.
