00:00:04.160 --> 00:00:13.519
Hello again and welcome to another episode of Solid Start, a podcast designed to get your week off to a solid start by focusing on life from God's perspective.
00:00:13.679 --> 00:00:21.760
I'm Greg Reed, life coach with Merrill Bros up in Coke, Indiana, joined by my wonderful and amazing co-host, Brian Herzog.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:22.879
Brian, good morning.
00:00:23.039 --> 00:00:24.160
Yay! Good morning, Greg.
00:00:24.239 --> 00:00:24.640
How are we?
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:26.079
Clapping continues.
00:00:26.399 --> 00:00:27.679
The thunderous applause.
00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:32.159
Tell you what, we had uh had a very busy week in my family.
00:00:32.320 --> 00:00:37.280
So uh my son starts school today, so we moved him down to Columbus.
00:00:37.439 --> 00:00:38.719
And as in Indiana.
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:40.560
Indiana, okay, a couple hours away.
00:00:40.960 --> 00:00:42.399
Ohio University Columbus.
00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:53.039
Uh we just happened to move last Wednesday, which was the I think the rainiest day in a thousand years here in at least it's in snow.
00:00:53.840 --> 00:00:55.039
At least crazy.
00:00:55.119 --> 00:00:55.280
Yeah.
00:00:55.520 --> 00:00:56.960
Trying to pack a U-Haul.
00:00:57.600 --> 00:00:58.960
Um can't imagine.
00:00:59.200 --> 00:01:01.920
In that rain and then trying to get south.
00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:03.520
Every road was closed.
00:01:03.600 --> 00:01:05.200
Like, and they weren't closed yet.
00:01:05.439 --> 00:01:08.959
We just couldn't pass because the water was just covering everywhere.
00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:11.439
So we were diverting, trying to get down there.
00:01:11.599 --> 00:01:16.879
We had a small window of time to get around Indianapolis, which was uh thank you, Lord, for that.
00:01:16.959 --> 00:01:18.319
Um rain.
00:01:18.560 --> 00:01:23.040
We got down to Columbus and we had 30 minutes before the next storm hit.
00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:30.239
And so we were throwing things out of the truck, trying to just get it out so we didn't have to unload furniture in the rain.
00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:31.920
And we were blessed.
00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:37.680
Um, and then and then the heavens opened up again as I had to try to take the U-Haul back.
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:41.120
We pulled back to the apartment and the rain stopped for the evening.
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:43.599
We're like, okay, okay, there you go.
00:01:44.159 --> 00:01:46.239
But that's not the only thing that happened.
00:01:46.560 --> 00:01:51.280
And then uh Thursday night, uh, my son got married.
00:01:51.599 --> 00:01:53.280
How exciting, how exciting.
00:01:53.519 --> 00:01:57.599
And uh, what was also exciting about that, Greg, is you did the wedding.
00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:04.159
I did, and it was so what a great treat that was to be able to be involved with your family in particular.
00:02:04.799 --> 00:02:08.000
It was a nice, simple, simple, simple wedding outside.
00:02:08.080 --> 00:02:09.680
We were dodging the rain that night.
00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:14.319
We were I thought a couple of times I looked at you and I thought, I think I feel some raindrops.
00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:16.159
Let's pray that they don't come very fast.
00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:28.479
God was good and uh they're they're they moved a couple days later because the actually they couldn't get down because the roads were blocked to Columbus, but they headed that way and uh starting their life together.
00:02:28.800 --> 00:02:30.560
Yeah, that's so exciting.
00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:32.400
I'm so excited for them.
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:43.520
Well, one of the things that I uh shared this morning was what I shared with uh um your son and uh new daughter-in-law now, uh, which they're and they're just a delightful couple, by the way.
00:02:43.680 --> 00:02:47.360
I'm so excited about their potential to to make a kingdom difference.
00:02:47.599 --> 00:03:05.360
But uh one of the things I shared with them were three keys, and so I uh I love at weddings to uh have three keys that are uh on a ring and then give them to the couple and to be able to say to them, hey, these are the keys to a great marriage.
00:03:05.680 --> 00:03:09.680
And so it's uh just three passages of scripture.
00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:23.599
The the reference is engraved on the back of each key, just as a reminder to them that uh if they use these keys every day, I promise you it will guarantee a great a great marriage.
00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:32.000
So the first key, um, Brian, if you remember right, is the key of control, and it comes out of Psalm 127, verse 1.
00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:33.280
Why don't you read that one?
00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:38.240
Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.
00:03:38.560 --> 00:03:39.439
There you go.
00:03:39.759 --> 00:03:43.919
So it's it's this idea that who gets to call the shots?
00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:53.439
I remember them talking uh a couple years ago that Ted Merrill was going to be the general contractor for this massive project in Kennewick, Washington.
00:03:53.759 --> 00:03:55.520
And that meant that he was in charge.
00:03:55.599 --> 00:03:57.520
In other words, he calls the shots.
00:03:57.759 --> 00:04:04.400
And so God's saying to us that unless he calls the shots, this is all in vain.
00:04:04.479 --> 00:04:07.840
It just doesn't work uh the way he designed it to.
00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:17.279
You can struggle through, and a lot of couples do, but man, it's just so much better when I don't have to be in charge, my wife doesn't have to be in charge, God gets to be in charge.
00:04:17.439 --> 00:04:18.000
He gets to call.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:20.319
He's the he's the construction manager.
00:04:20.399 --> 00:04:22.160
It's not a do-it-yourself project.
00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:24.399
Say, I'm just gonna figure this out myself.
00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:27.199
We don't have to figure it out all out ourselves, right?
00:04:27.439 --> 00:04:28.560
Amen, because I can't.
00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:29.759
I know I can't, yeah.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.160
That's way above my pay grade, as they say.
00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:41.439
So that idea of this key in control, I always say to couples, this is uh this is your first key because I think it's the most significant and important one.
00:04:41.680 --> 00:05:03.519
If we can give over the control of our lives, if both parties do that, if Elijah does that and Josie does that, then this just works so much better and they will have a fabulous marriage as they every day, every moment of the day, give away control to the God who created us and knows how marriage works because he designed it.
00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:04.079
Yeah.
00:05:04.240 --> 00:05:06.160
And you know, let me speak to that again.
00:05:06.240 --> 00:05:06.879
It's hard.
00:05:07.040 --> 00:05:07.279
Yeah.
00:05:07.839 --> 00:05:12.800
We're we're our inner sinful lives, we don't want to give up.
00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:14.399
We're wired to be in charge.
00:05:14.959 --> 00:05:15.439
We're in charge.
00:05:15.519 --> 00:05:15.680
Yeah.
00:05:15.759 --> 00:05:15.920
Yeah.
00:05:16.319 --> 00:05:26.800
And I think if if you're struggling with that, allow the Holy Spirit into your life and say, convict me uh in those places in my life where I'm not giving up control.
00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:27.439
Yeah.
00:05:27.600 --> 00:05:28.319
And he will.
00:05:28.560 --> 00:05:28.959
He will.
00:05:29.199 --> 00:05:37.040
It's uh it's a battle, and it's why I say that it takes men a lot longer to come to faith in Christ than women, because we can't give up control.
00:05:37.439 --> 00:05:45.199
We want to run our own show, and you know, who's somebody else to say to me or a God of the universe to say, hey, I want you to give up control?
00:05:45.279 --> 00:05:47.839
But he did in fact create us, and so he gets to call the shot.
00:05:48.079 --> 00:05:48.399
That's right.
00:05:48.560 --> 00:05:48.720
Right.
00:05:49.279 --> 00:06:01.120
The second key is just as important, uh, but it's uh comes out of the New Testament this time, out of the uh uh book of Philippians, and it's the key of consideration.
00:06:01.519 --> 00:06:06.079
Why don't you uh read those two verses that I have engraved on the second key?
00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:20.079
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, rather in humility, consider others above yourself, not looking to your own interest, but each of you to the interest of the others.
00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:26.000
Brian, just think how that could transform every marriage, including our marriages.
00:06:26.160 --> 00:06:41.759
Um to think that if we just if you looked out for Julie's interests before your own, and I looked out for Cerise's interests, and I considered her before I considered myself, that just that's revolutionary.
00:06:41.920 --> 00:06:47.120
It really is, to put somebody else first because we want I want to be in charge.
00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:51.439
I want to be the one that gets to decide, hey, I think that's way better for me.
00:06:51.680 --> 00:06:52.079
Yeah.
00:06:52.319 --> 00:06:59.120
I think what was uh cool this morning is when you said when you wake up every morning, right, instead of saying, What am I gonna do today?
00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:00.399
It's about me.
00:07:00.800 --> 00:07:07.439
Um wake up and say, How can I serve that's right, my wife, my husband uh today?
00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:09.120
And it that would make a huge difference.
00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:10.560
And it gives that mindset.
00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:13.279
And it goes against our natural tendency, doesn't it?
00:07:13.600 --> 00:07:14.319
To say, it does.
00:07:14.560 --> 00:07:21.759
Hey, why can't that and you know, whenever I do marital counseling, it's always two people who say, I want life to be about me.
00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:27.040
And she doesn't want it to be about me, he doesn't want it to be about me, and then we have an impasse.
00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:29.519
And just watch out for the silent mees, yeah.
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:29.839
Right?
00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:35.680
There are a lot of things that we do in our life that uh it's it's about us, but we don't really think that way.
00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:47.120
Like, no, this is helping both of us when really it is about you, right, instead of considering um your spouse and putting them first in that.
00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:56.160
So there's the key of control, there's the key of consideration, and the third key uh then is the key of commitment.
00:07:56.319 --> 00:07:59.759
And this one comes out of Ecclesiastes 5 5.
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:06.560
It says, It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.
00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:17.759
Man, Solomon's just reminding us that uh these vows are to be for life, and if we're not gonna keep it, then just don't make it, just don't say it.
00:08:17.920 --> 00:08:24.079
And so for your son and daughter-in-law, they stood there in front of all of us and made a vow.
00:08:24.160 --> 00:08:30.639
And they said it was before God and the people that were witnesses to say, Hey, this is for the rest of our lives.
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:38.799
They repeated, for better, for worse, for richer for poor, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.
00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:40.799
And so they made that promise.
00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:47.519
And I said to them Thursday night that there's this line in the sand, you've just crossed it, and there's no going back.
00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:51.919
This is a one and done until one of you takes your last breath.
00:08:52.080 --> 00:08:52.320
That's right.
00:08:52.559 --> 00:09:02.240
And so that's been wonderful for I know for you and Julie and for Sarissa and I to know that the D word, as I call it, never gets spoken in our house.
00:09:02.399 --> 00:09:12.000
I talked to someone just last week, and uh one of the persons in the relationship mentioned that they are already used the D word and for divorce.
00:09:12.080 --> 00:09:14.639
And I thought, oh man, that's really a bad sign.
00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:15.360
And I said that.
00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:23.279
I said that just that can't be a word that gets spoken because once it does, then it starts this crack in the marriage.
00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:24.960
Oh, maybe that could be possible.
00:09:25.200 --> 00:09:25.679
It's an option.
00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:28.639
It's an option, it's an out, it's an out, but it's not.
00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:36.879
It's not, that's not the answer because the success rate for second marriages, third, fourth, fifth, it just keeps going down.
00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:37.279
Yeah.
00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:40.559
And so once and the impact that it has on your kids.
00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:43.120
Oh my god, just unbelievable.
00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:46.960
Julie works in a school system and she sees that every day.
00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:48.080
Every single day.
00:09:48.320 --> 00:09:48.559
Yeah.
00:09:48.720 --> 00:09:50.720
Yeah, it affects your kids, right?
00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:51.519
Yeah.
00:09:52.159 --> 00:09:55.440
Don't listen to the lie like we'll it we'll be better.
00:09:55.600 --> 00:09:55.840
Yeah.
00:09:56.159 --> 00:09:56.399
No.
00:09:56.799 --> 00:09:57.840
No, we'll be better off.
00:09:58.320 --> 00:09:58.799
We'll be better off.
00:09:59.519 --> 00:10:00.240
No, you will not.
00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:00.879
Yeah.
00:10:01.200 --> 00:10:02.720
Gotta work it out where we are.
00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:08.559
Because the thing is, we take our baggage into the next relationship or into the next one.
00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:13.840
And it's really uh the only problem in my marriage is the guy I see in the mirror every morning.
00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:14.240
Yeah.
00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:15.919
So that's that's the issue.
00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:17.360
It's not it's not my wife.
00:10:17.600 --> 00:10:19.600
So I say if you're struggling, right?
00:10:19.759 --> 00:10:22.240
Go back to the first thing that we talked about, control.
00:10:22.399 --> 00:10:22.720
Yeah.
00:10:22.960 --> 00:10:23.360
Right?
00:10:23.679 --> 00:10:30.559
If you're struggling in your marriage, chances are you're not allowing God to lead that relationship.
00:10:30.639 --> 00:10:32.720
You're not giving up control to him.
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:34.480
Um start there.
00:10:34.639 --> 00:10:34.960
Yeah.
00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:41.279
And I think that's would be a great practice assignment for this week, Brian, is to focus on the key of control.
00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:49.840
We can't do all three keys at the same time, but we could focus on one key, and it's the can key of control in our home settings.
00:10:50.000 --> 00:11:19.759
So even if you're even if you're a single parent and you're not uh married, or you're somebody who's listening to this, you think, hey, one day I hope to be married, um, these three keys are the keys to a great relationship, and this key of control, as you said, is uh uh is the beginning of of all of the other ones because once we get this one right and we say, God, you get to run my life, once we surrender, then everything else starts to fall in line.
00:11:20.080 --> 00:11:34.639
So if people want to get a hold of us and say, I don't even know how to begin that, I think that I we talked this morning about it's there's some kind of surrender of your um either of your time, your talents, or your treasure.
00:11:34.799 --> 00:11:44.000
Somewhere along the line, uh you are have close fists and you're not giving God control of one of those three areas.
00:11:44.320 --> 00:11:51.279
Um if they wanted to get a hold of us, if they said, hey, we need to get some some help in this, how do how do they do that?
00:11:51.600 --> 00:11:58.399
Yeah, just go to Merrillbros.com, click on the prayer tab at the top of the page, which is awesome for a company to have a prayer tab, by the way.
00:11:59.039 --> 00:11:59.519
Yeah.
00:11:59.759 --> 00:12:08.879
Click on that prayer tab, fill out that information, and uh we can uh reach out to you and get back with you, or if you just want prayer, we can just pray for you.
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:10.559
Yeah, yeah, not a problem.
00:12:10.960 --> 00:12:20.480
Even uh, you know, helping you find a uh a place where somebody can talk to you and you can have a conversation, that is often uh that is often the beginning.
00:12:20.879 --> 00:12:21.679
Take that first step.
00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:22.399
Right.
00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:31.039
Well, today you mentioned uh um the flooding, and I know that's not just been for Indiana, that's been all over the country.
00:12:31.120 --> 00:12:37.679
So I think it would be great to to pray for uh uh those who have been impacted.
00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:44.080
Uh I know a lot of churches are coming alongside of people, but a lot of people have lost all of their possessions.
00:12:44.399 --> 00:12:54.879
And so how how do they recover from that other than recognizing God you're still in control and we give ourselves to you again in this rebuilding?
00:12:55.120 --> 00:12:58.240
So I I think it'd be great for us to pray about that.
00:12:58.320 --> 00:13:15.840
And somebody uh asked us today to to pray for boldness in our faith, even in a work environment, to be able to be sensitive to other people, but not to shrink back and to help people to know that you know, man, I want God to control my life.
00:13:17.120 --> 00:13:22.159
Anything else about that one that we should focus on, do you think, Brian?
00:13:22.320 --> 00:13:37.840
Or I I thought it was pretty bold to him to bring that up when uh I he even said in conversations that we we kind of get stuck in conversations and we know they're not a positive conversation, right?
00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:41.360
And yet we don't say anything and we just kind of go down that road.
00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:42.559
So be bold.
00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:48.000
You don't have to fit in if the conversations are not healthy, right?
00:13:48.399 --> 00:13:48.559
Right.
00:13:48.799 --> 00:13:49.519
Just be bold.
00:13:49.600 --> 00:13:49.759
Yeah.
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:50.720
Be bold.
00:13:51.440 --> 00:13:58.639
Well, since you were uh dodging the uh flooding, I'll have you to uh since you got to experience that up close in personal.
00:13:58.960 --> 00:13:59.759
I'm praying for myself.
00:14:00.080 --> 00:14:14.480
I'll have you pray for that one and the people that have been impacted, and yes, I will uh I'll focus on the uh boldness in our in our faith and we'll certainly uh include this idea of uh the key of control this week in our homes.
00:14:15.759 --> 00:14:25.440
Father, we just uh pause and give you all the praise and glory for who you are, for what you've done, and what you're going to continue to do in our lives.
00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:32.639
Father, I want to pray for all those who have been affected by uh the rains.
00:14:32.720 --> 00:14:40.799
I know I have in my own basement and a lot of my friends uh in here in Indiana it was not expected.
00:14:41.039 --> 00:14:45.200
Um that's just part of life sometimes, God.
00:14:45.360 --> 00:14:52.080
Things happen in our lives that we don't expect, and um we have to give control over to you in those moments.
00:14:52.240 --> 00:14:54.240
If not, we'll worry ourselves to death.
00:14:54.559 --> 00:14:56.720
We'll we won't know what to do next.
00:14:57.039 --> 00:15:07.840
God, and there I just pray that those who that were affected by the the flooding, um, God, that they would just look to you and just say, you know what, it was just stuff.
00:15:08.240 --> 00:15:09.919
All of that can be replaced.
00:15:10.559 --> 00:15:15.440
But the relationship that I need with you, God, has to come first.
00:15:15.679 --> 00:15:16.559
It's hard, God.
00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:23.440
I know it's hard when when you lose everything and have to start over and you have to deal with insurance and all those things.
00:15:23.519 --> 00:15:25.519
It can be a very hectic time.
00:15:25.600 --> 00:15:37.120
So I'm just praying, God, that people would come alongside those who have been affected by the flood waters, that the church community would just unite and uh be the hands and feet of Jesus.
00:15:37.279 --> 00:15:43.919
And um I just pray God that you would be present in in this in the moment when the people are in despair.
00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:50.000
And uh God, we love you and we know that you hear our prayers in Jesus' name.
00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:58.879
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we are so thankful for this gift of marriage that was your idea from the very beginning.
00:15:59.840 --> 00:16:09.440
And thank you that you've given us keys in your word and preparation for helping us to understand what it takes to have a great marriage.
00:16:09.840 --> 00:16:16.080
And so we're uh very thankful that uh you saw that uh that very first man he was alone.
00:16:16.159 --> 00:16:18.720
You said for the very first time, that's not good.
00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:21.039
Uh I'm gonna create a helpmate.
00:16:21.120 --> 00:16:58.080
So thanks for the gift of marriage, for homes that are represented, uh, that listen to this podcast and pray for uh those in particular who are married today, that they might say, Wow, this key of control, this really needs to be uh my focus uh for this week, maybe this month, maybe this year, uh, to say, God, how does every day I give up control of my time, my talent, and my treasures in order that you get to call the shots in all of those aspects of my life where we so desperately want to try to be in control.
00:16:58.159 --> 00:17:01.120
But when you're in control, it just works so much better.
00:17:01.759 --> 00:17:16.079
And Father, we're grateful for the desire on the part of our people uh to be bold in their faith, um, to give a reason for the hope that we have and to do it with sensitivity, to do it with kindness and with grace.
00:17:16.480 --> 00:17:25.440
And so thank you that uh we get to be a part of an incredible company uh that is uh focused on you and making you famous everywhere.
00:17:25.599 --> 00:17:39.279
So we just give you thanks for the privilege of being able to do this podcast, pray for the listeners that we have, and ask that you would encourage them uh day by day as they give up control to the general contractor of the universe.
00:17:39.440 --> 00:17:40.960
In Jesus' name we pray.
00:17:41.200 --> 00:17:41.759
Amen.
00:17:41.920 --> 00:17:42.319
Amen.
00:17:43.440 --> 00:17:45.599
Again, let us know if we can pray for you.
00:17:45.680 --> 00:17:50.000
You can go to Merrillbrose.com and click the prayer tab at the top of the page.
00:17:50.079 --> 00:17:52.640
And thanks for joining us for Solid Start.
00:17:53.039 --> 00:17:57.359
Keep growing, keep encouraging, keep making a difference.
00:00:04.160 --> 00:00:13.519
Hello again and welcome to another episode of Solid Start, a podcast designed to get your week off to a solid start by focusing on life from God's perspective.
00:00:13.679 --> 00:00:21.760
I'm Greg Reed, life coach with Merrill Bros up in Coke, Indiana, joined by my wonderful and amazing co-host, Brian Herzog.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:22.879
Brian, good morning.
00:00:23.039 --> 00:00:24.160
Yay! Good morning, Greg.
00:00:24.239 --> 00:00:24.640
How are we?
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:26.079
Clapping continues.
00:00:26.399 --> 00:00:27.679
The thunderous applause.
00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:32.159
Tell you what, we had uh had a very busy week in my family.
00:00:32.320 --> 00:00:37.280
So uh my son starts school today, so we moved him down to Columbus.
00:00:37.439 --> 00:00:38.719
And as in Indiana.
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:40.560
Indiana, okay, a couple hours away.
00:00:40.960 --> 00:00:42.399
Ohio University Columbus.
00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:53.039
Uh we just happened to move last Wednesday, which was the I think the rainiest day in a thousand years here in at least it's in snow.
00:00:53.840 --> 00:00:55.039
At least crazy.
00:00:55.119 --> 00:00:55.280
Yeah.
00:00:55.520 --> 00:00:56.960
Trying to pack a U-Haul.
00:00:57.600 --> 00:00:58.960
Um can't imagine.
00:00:59.200 --> 00:01:01.920
In that rain and then trying to get south.
00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:03.520
Every road was closed.
00:01:03.600 --> 00:01:05.200
Like, and they weren't closed yet.
00:01:05.439 --> 00:01:08.959
We just couldn't pass because the water was just covering everywhere.
00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:11.439
So we were diverting, trying to get down there.
00:01:11.599 --> 00:01:16.879
We had a small window of time to get around Indianapolis, which was uh thank you, Lord, for that.
00:01:16.959 --> 00:01:18.319
Um rain.
00:01:18.560 --> 00:01:23.040
We got down to Columbus and we had 30 minutes before the next storm hit.
00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:30.239
And so we were throwing things out of the truck, trying to just get it out so we didn't have to unload furniture in the rain.
00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:31.920
And we were blessed.
00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:37.680
Um, and then and then the heavens opened up again as I had to try to take the U-Haul back.
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:41.120
We pulled back to the apartment and the rain stopped for the evening.
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:43.599
We're like, okay, okay, there you go.
00:01:44.159 --> 00:01:46.239
But that's not the only thing that happened.
00:01:46.560 --> 00:01:51.280
And then uh Thursday night, uh, my son got married.
00:01:51.599 --> 00:01:53.280
How exciting, how exciting.
00:01:53.519 --> 00:01:57.599
And uh, what was also exciting about that, Greg, is you did the wedding.
00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:04.159
I did, and it was so what a great treat that was to be able to be involved with your family in particular.
00:02:04.799 --> 00:02:08.000
It was a nice, simple, simple, simple wedding outside.
00:02:08.080 --> 00:02:09.680
We were dodging the rain that night.
00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:14.319
We were I thought a couple of times I looked at you and I thought, I think I feel some raindrops.
00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:16.159
Let's pray that they don't come very fast.
00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:28.479
God was good and uh they're they're they moved a couple days later because the actually they couldn't get down because the roads were blocked to Columbus, but they headed that way and uh starting their life together.
00:02:28.800 --> 00:02:30.560
Yeah, that's so exciting.
00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:32.400
I'm so excited for them.
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:43.520
Well, one of the things that I uh shared this morning was what I shared with uh um your son and uh new daughter-in-law now, uh, which they're and they're just a delightful couple, by the way.
00:02:43.680 --> 00:02:47.360
I'm so excited about their potential to to make a kingdom difference.
00:02:47.599 --> 00:03:05.360
But uh one of the things I shared with them were three keys, and so I uh I love at weddings to uh have three keys that are uh on a ring and then give them to the couple and to be able to say to them, hey, these are the keys to a great marriage.
00:03:05.680 --> 00:03:09.680
And so it's uh just three passages of scripture.
00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:23.599
The the reference is engraved on the back of each key, just as a reminder to them that uh if they use these keys every day, I promise you it will guarantee a great a great marriage.
00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:32.000
So the first key, um, Brian, if you remember right, is the key of control, and it comes out of Psalm 127, verse 1.
00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:33.280
Why don't you read that one?
00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:38.240
Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.
00:03:38.560 --> 00:03:39.439
There you go.
00:03:39.759 --> 00:03:43.919
So it's it's this idea that who gets to call the shots?
00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:53.439
I remember them talking uh a couple years ago that Ted Merrill was going to be the general contractor for this massive project in Kennewick, Washington.
00:03:53.759 --> 00:03:55.520
And that meant that he was in charge.
00:03:55.599 --> 00:03:57.520
In other words, he calls the shots.
00:03:57.759 --> 00:04:04.400
And so God's saying to us that unless he calls the shots, this is all in vain.
00:04:04.479 --> 00:04:07.840
It just doesn't work uh the way he designed it to.
00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:17.279
You can struggle through, and a lot of couples do, but man, it's just so much better when I don't have to be in charge, my wife doesn't have to be in charge, God gets to be in charge.
00:04:17.439 --> 00:04:18.000
He gets to call.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:20.319
He's the he's the construction manager.
00:04:20.399 --> 00:04:22.160
It's not a do-it-yourself project.
00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:24.399
Say, I'm just gonna figure this out myself.
00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:27.199
We don't have to figure it out all out ourselves, right?
00:04:27.439 --> 00:04:28.560
Amen, because I can't.
00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:29.759
I know I can't, yeah.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.160
That's way above my pay grade, as they say.
00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:41.439
So that idea of this key in control, I always say to couples, this is uh this is your first key because I think it's the most significant and important one.
00:04:41.680 --> 00:05:03.519
If we can give over the control of our lives, if both parties do that, if Elijah does that and Josie does that, then this just works so much better and they will have a fabulous marriage as they every day, every moment of the day, give away control to the God who created us and knows how marriage works because he designed it.
00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:04.079
Yeah.
00:05:04.240 --> 00:05:06.160
And you know, let me speak to that again.
00:05:06.240 --> 00:05:06.879
It's hard.
00:05:07.040 --> 00:05:07.279
Yeah.
00:05:07.839 --> 00:05:12.800
We're we're our inner sinful lives, we don't want to give up.
00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:14.399
We're wired to be in charge.
00:05:14.959 --> 00:05:15.439
We're in charge.
00:05:15.519 --> 00:05:15.680
Yeah.
00:05:15.759 --> 00:05:15.920
Yeah.
00:05:16.319 --> 00:05:26.800
And I think if if you're struggling with that, allow the Holy Spirit into your life and say, convict me uh in those places in my life where I'm not giving up control.
00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:27.439
Yeah.
00:05:27.600 --> 00:05:28.319
And he will.
00:05:28.560 --> 00:05:28.959
He will.
00:05:29.199 --> 00:05:37.040
It's uh it's a battle, and it's why I say that it takes men a lot longer to come to faith in Christ than women, because we can't give up control.
00:05:37.439 --> 00:05:45.199
We want to run our own show, and you know, who's somebody else to say to me or a God of the universe to say, hey, I want you to give up control?
00:05:45.279 --> 00:05:47.839
But he did in fact create us, and so he gets to call the shot.
00:05:48.079 --> 00:05:48.399
That's right.
00:05:48.560 --> 00:05:48.720
Right.
00:05:49.279 --> 00:06:01.120
The second key is just as important, uh, but it's uh comes out of the New Testament this time, out of the uh uh book of Philippians, and it's the key of consideration.
00:06:01.519 --> 00:06:06.079
Why don't you uh read those two verses that I have engraved on the second key?
00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:20.079
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, rather in humility, consider others above yourself, not looking to your own interest, but each of you to the interest of the others.
00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:26.000
Brian, just think how that could transform every marriage, including our marriages.
00:06:26.160 --> 00:06:41.759
Um to think that if we just if you looked out for Julie's interests before your own, and I looked out for Cerise's interests, and I considered her before I considered myself, that just that's revolutionary.
00:06:41.920 --> 00:06:47.120
It really is, to put somebody else first because we want I want to be in charge.
00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:51.439
I want to be the one that gets to decide, hey, I think that's way better for me.
00:06:51.680 --> 00:06:52.079
Yeah.
00:06:52.319 --> 00:06:59.120
I think what was uh cool this morning is when you said when you wake up every morning, right, instead of saying, What am I gonna do today?
00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:00.399
It's about me.
00:07:00.800 --> 00:07:07.439
Um wake up and say, How can I serve that's right, my wife, my husband uh today?
00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:09.120
And it that would make a huge difference.
00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:10.560
And it gives that mindset.
00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:13.279
And it goes against our natural tendency, doesn't it?
00:07:13.600 --> 00:07:14.319
To say, it does.
00:07:14.560 --> 00:07:21.759
Hey, why can't that and you know, whenever I do marital counseling, it's always two people who say, I want life to be about me.
00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:27.040
And she doesn't want it to be about me, he doesn't want it to be about me, and then we have an impasse.
00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:29.519
And just watch out for the silent mees, yeah.
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:29.839
Right?
00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:35.680
There are a lot of things that we do in our life that uh it's it's about us, but we don't really think that way.
00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:47.120
Like, no, this is helping both of us when really it is about you, right, instead of considering um your spouse and putting them first in that.
00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:56.160
So there's the key of control, there's the key of consideration, and the third key uh then is the key of commitment.
00:07:56.319 --> 00:07:59.759
And this one comes out of Ecclesiastes 5 5.
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:06.560
It says, It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.
00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:17.759
Man, Solomon's just reminding us that uh these vows are to be for life, and if we're not gonna keep it, then just don't make it, just don't say it.
00:08:17.920 --> 00:08:24.079
And so for your son and daughter-in-law, they stood there in front of all of us and made a vow.
00:08:24.160 --> 00:08:30.639
And they said it was before God and the people that were witnesses to say, Hey, this is for the rest of our lives.
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:38.799
They repeated, for better, for worse, for richer for poor, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.
00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:40.799
And so they made that promise.
00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:47.519
And I said to them Thursday night that there's this line in the sand, you've just crossed it, and there's no going back.
00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:51.919
This is a one and done until one of you takes your last breath.
00:08:52.080 --> 00:08:52.320
That's right.
00:08:52.559 --> 00:09:02.240
And so that's been wonderful for I know for you and Julie and for Sarissa and I to know that the D word, as I call it, never gets spoken in our house.
00:09:02.399 --> 00:09:12.000
I talked to someone just last week, and uh one of the persons in the relationship mentioned that they are already used the D word and for divorce.
00:09:12.080 --> 00:09:14.639
And I thought, oh man, that's really a bad sign.
00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:15.360
And I said that.
00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:23.279
I said that just that can't be a word that gets spoken because once it does, then it starts this crack in the marriage.
00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:24.960
Oh, maybe that could be possible.
00:09:25.200 --> 00:09:25.679
It's an option.
00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:28.639
It's an option, it's an out, it's an out, but it's not.
00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:36.879
It's not, that's not the answer because the success rate for second marriages, third, fourth, fifth, it just keeps going down.
00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:37.279
Yeah.
00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:40.559
And so once and the impact that it has on your kids.
00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:43.120
Oh my god, just unbelievable.
00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:46.960
Julie works in a school system and she sees that every day.
00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:48.080
Every single day.
00:09:48.320 --> 00:09:48.559
Yeah.
00:09:48.720 --> 00:09:50.720
Yeah, it affects your kids, right?
00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:51.519
Yeah.
00:09:52.159 --> 00:09:55.440
Don't listen to the lie like we'll it we'll be better.
00:09:55.600 --> 00:09:55.840
Yeah.
00:09:56.159 --> 00:09:56.399
No.
00:09:56.799 --> 00:09:57.840
No, we'll be better off.
00:09:58.320 --> 00:09:58.799
We'll be better off.
00:09:59.519 --> 00:10:00.240
No, you will not.
00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:00.879
Yeah.
00:10:01.200 --> 00:10:02.720
Gotta work it out where we are.
00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:08.559
Because the thing is, we take our baggage into the next relationship or into the next one.
00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:13.840
And it's really uh the only problem in my marriage is the guy I see in the mirror every morning.
00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:14.240
Yeah.
00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:15.919
So that's that's the issue.
00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:17.360
It's not it's not my wife.
00:10:17.600 --> 00:10:19.600
So I say if you're struggling, right?
00:10:19.759 --> 00:10:22.240
Go back to the first thing that we talked about, control.
00:10:22.399 --> 00:10:22.720
Yeah.
00:10:22.960 --> 00:10:23.360
Right?
00:10:23.679 --> 00:10:30.559
If you're struggling in your marriage, chances are you're not allowing God to lead that relationship.
00:10:30.639 --> 00:10:32.720
You're not giving up control to him.
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:34.480
Um start there.
00:10:34.639 --> 00:10:34.960
Yeah.
00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:41.279
And I think that's would be a great practice assignment for this week, Brian, is to focus on the key of control.
00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:49.840
We can't do all three keys at the same time, but we could focus on one key, and it's the can key of control in our home settings.
00:10:50.000 --> 00:11:19.759
00:11:20.080 --> 00:11:34.639
So if people want to get a hold of us and say, I don't even know how to begin that, I think that I we talked this morning about it's there's some kind of surrender of your um either of your time, your talents, or your treasure.
00:11:34.799 --> 00:11:44.000
Somewhere along the line, uh you are have close fists and you're not giving God control of one of those three areas.
00:11:44.320 --> 00:11:51.279
Um if they wanted to get a hold of us, if they said, hey, we need to get some some help in this, how do how do they do that?
00:11:51.600 --> 00:11:58.399
Yeah, just go to Merrillbros.com, click on the prayer tab at the top of the page, which is awesome for a company to have a prayer tab, by the way.
00:11:59.039 --> 00:11:59.519
Yeah.
00:11:59.759 --> 00:12:08.879
Click on that prayer tab, fill out that information, and uh we can uh reach out to you and get back with you, or if you just want prayer, we can just pray for you.
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:10.559
Yeah, yeah, not a problem.
00:12:10.960 --> 00:12:20.480
Even uh, you know, helping you find a uh a place where somebody can talk to you and you can have a conversation, that is often uh that is often the beginning.
00:12:20.879 --> 00:12:21.679
Take that first step.
00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:22.399
Right.
00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:31.039
Well, today you mentioned uh um the flooding, and I know that's not just been for Indiana, that's been all over the country.
00:12:31.120 --> 00:12:37.679
So I think it would be great to to pray for uh uh those who have been impacted.
00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:44.080
Uh I know a lot of churches are coming alongside of people, but a lot of people have lost all of their possessions.
00:12:44.399 --> 00:12:54.879
And so how how do they recover from that other than recognizing God you're still in control and we give ourselves to you again in this rebuilding?
00:12:55.120 --> 00:12:58.240
So I I think it'd be great for us to pray about that.
00:12:58.320 --> 00:13:15.840
And somebody uh asked us today to to pray for boldness in our faith, even in a work environment, to be able to be sensitive to other people, but not to shrink back and to help people to know that you know, man, I want God to control my life.
00:13:17.120 --> 00:13:22.159
Anything else about that one that we should focus on, do you think, Brian?
00:13:22.320 --> 00:13:37.840
Or I I thought it was pretty bold to him to bring that up when uh I he even said in conversations that we we kind of get stuck in conversations and we know they're not a positive conversation, right?
00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:41.360
And yet we don't say anything and we just kind of go down that road.
00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:42.559
So be bold.
00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:48.000
You don't have to fit in if the conversations are not healthy, right?
00:13:48.399 --> 00:13:48.559
Right.
00:13:48.799 --> 00:13:49.519
Just be bold.
00:13:49.600 --> 00:13:49.759
Yeah.
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:50.720
Be bold.
00:13:51.440 --> 00:13:58.639
Well, since you were uh dodging the uh flooding, I'll have you to uh since you got to experience that up close in personal.
00:13:58.960 --> 00:13:59.759
I'm praying for myself.
00:14:00.080 --> 00:14:14.480
I'll have you pray for that one and the people that have been impacted, and yes, I will uh I'll focus on the uh boldness in our in our faith and we'll certainly uh include this idea of uh the key of control this week in our homes.
00:14:15.759 --> 00:14:25.440
Father, we just uh pause and give you all the praise and glory for who you are, for what you've done, and what you're going to continue to do in our lives.
00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:32.639
Father, I want to pray for all those who have been affected by uh the rains.
00:14:32.720 --> 00:14:40.799
I know I have in my own basement and a lot of my friends uh in here in Indiana it was not expected.
00:14:41.039 --> 00:14:45.200
Um that's just part of life sometimes, God.
00:14:45.360 --> 00:14:52.080
Things happen in our lives that we don't expect, and um we have to give control over to you in those moments.
00:14:52.240 --> 00:14:54.240
If not, we'll worry ourselves to death.
00:14:54.559 --> 00:14:56.720
We'll we won't know what to do next.
00:14:57.039 --> 00:15:07.840
God, and there I just pray that those who that were affected by the the flooding, um, God, that they would just look to you and just say, you know what, it was just stuff.
00:15:08.240 --> 00:15:09.919
All of that can be replaced.
00:15:10.559 --> 00:15:15.440
But the relationship that I need with you, God, has to come first.
00:15:15.679 --> 00:15:16.559
It's hard, God.
00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:23.440
I know it's hard when when you lose everything and have to start over and you have to deal with insurance and all those things.
00:15:23.519 --> 00:15:25.519
It can be a very hectic time.
00:15:25.600 --> 00:15:37.120
So I'm just praying, God, that people would come alongside those who have been affected by the flood waters, that the church community would just unite and uh be the hands and feet of Jesus.
00:15:37.279 --> 00:15:43.919
And um I just pray God that you would be present in in this in the moment when the people are in despair.
00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:50.000
And uh God, we love you and we know that you hear our prayers in Jesus' name.
00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:58.879
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we are so thankful for this gift of marriage that was your idea from the very beginning.
00:15:59.840 --> 00:16:09.440
And thank you that you've given us keys in your word and preparation for helping us to understand what it takes to have a great marriage.
00:16:09.840 --> 00:16:16.080
And so we're uh very thankful that uh you saw that uh that very first man he was alone.
00:16:16.159 --> 00:16:18.720
You said for the very first time, that's not good.
00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:21.039
Uh I'm gonna create a helpmate.
00:16:21.120 --> 00:16:58.080
00:16:58.159 --> 00:17:01.120
But when you're in control, it just works so much better.
00:17:01.759 --> 00:17:16.079
And Father, we're grateful for the desire on the part of our people uh to be bold in their faith, um, to give a reason for the hope that we have and to do it with sensitivity, to do it with kindness and with grace.
00:17:16.480 --> 00:17:25.440
And so thank you that uh we get to be a part of an incredible company uh that is uh focused on you and making you famous everywhere.
00:17:25.599 --> 00:17:39.279
So we just give you thanks for the privilege of being able to do this podcast, pray for the listeners that we have, and ask that you would encourage them uh day by day as they give up control to the general contractor of the universe.
00:17:39.440 --> 00:17:40.960
In Jesus' name we pray.
00:17:41.200 --> 00:17:41.759
Amen.
00:17:41.920 --> 00:17:42.319
Amen.
00:17:43.440 --> 00:17:45.599
Again, let us know if we can pray for you.
00:17:45.680 --> 00:17:50.000
You can go to Merrillbrose.com and click the prayer tab at the top of the page.
00:17:50.079 --> 00:17:52.640
And thanks for joining us for Solid Start.
00:17:53.039 --> 00:17:57.359
Keep growing, keep encouraging, keep making a difference.
