00:00:04.320 --> 00:00:13.240
The welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso
2
00:00:13.320 --> 00:00:15.759
here on the SDH Network, presented by our friends at
3
00:00:15.800 --> 00:00:21.679
Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.
4
00:00:21.719 --> 00:00:24.120
I'm Jason Longshore. We're going to bounce all over the
5
00:00:24.160 --> 00:00:26.960
planet today with all the soccer news you need to
6
00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.559
know for Tuesday, May sixth. Let's start with the Lamar
7
00:00:30.640 --> 00:00:33.439
Hunt US Open Cup moves into the round of thirty two.
8
00:00:33.679 --> 00:00:37.280
Sixteen MLS teams enter the tournament here. Yes, we want
9
00:00:37.399 --> 00:00:39.640
all the MLS teams that are in the United States
10
00:00:40.039 --> 00:00:42.159
in the Open Cup. Yes, we want to see that
11
00:00:42.240 --> 00:00:45.520
starting next year. Yes, the roster rules need to expand
12
00:00:45.560 --> 00:00:50.280
to make that more comfortable for all the teams involved. Yes, yes, yes,
13
00:00:50.359 --> 00:00:54.479
but no this year. So it's the sixteen lowest placed
14
00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:57.560
US teams in the twenty twenty four standings that didn't
15
00:00:57.640 --> 00:01:03.320
qualify for the twenty twenty five CONCACAF Champions Cup. Six
16
00:01:03.719 --> 00:01:06.840
entrants from MLS are former Open Cup champions. One of
17
00:01:06.879 --> 00:01:10.400
those is DC United. They host Charleston Battery tonight. This
18
00:01:10.599 --> 00:01:14.719
is a rivalry match. Yes, it is nineteen ninety nine.
19
00:01:14.840 --> 00:01:18.959
Charleston upset DC United four to three in overtime. DC
20
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:22.879
players were very upset and they smashed coffee pots in
21
00:01:22.920 --> 00:01:24.760
the locker room. I mean, who does that. It's a
22
00:01:24.760 --> 00:01:26.599
coffee pot. Why are you smashing a coffee pot in
23
00:01:26.640 --> 00:01:30.000
the locker room? Come on, well, that started the coffee
24
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:32.560
pot Cup. So I guess the winner will get to
25
00:01:32.560 --> 00:01:35.239
advance in the tournament and get a coffee pot cup.
26
00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:37.879
So we'll see what happens. Good rivalry between DC and
27
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:40.359
Charleston should be a good match. Red Bulls they got
28
00:01:40.359 --> 00:01:43.680
to travel across the country to face the defending champions
29
00:01:43.719 --> 00:01:48.040
in the USL Championship, Colorado Springs. That's tonight. Also tonight
30
00:01:48.159 --> 00:01:53.200
to Southeastern regional matchups. North Carolina hosting Charlotte, Nashville hosting
31
00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:58.439
Chattanooga Red Wolves. Wednesday, Phoenix will host Houston. Wan Guerra,
32
00:01:58.560 --> 00:02:02.599
who won the twenty twenty three USL Championship while managing Phoenix,
33
00:02:03.040 --> 00:02:06.480
he returns as part of Houston's coaching staff, and also
34
00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:10.599
on Wednesday night, San Jose hosts Sacramento. Last two times
35
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:14.240
these teams have met, it was in Sacramento both times,
36
00:02:14.520 --> 00:02:17.479
and Republic won both times. Last year and in twenty
37
00:02:17.520 --> 00:02:20.759
twenty two. The three previous meetings before that were in
38
00:02:20.840 --> 00:02:24.039
San Jose and the Quakes won. So are the Quakes favored.
39
00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:26.599
We'll find out tonight. What San Jose Earthquakes this season.
40
00:02:26.680 --> 00:02:29.080
Anything could happen. They could score five, they could give
41
00:02:29.159 --> 00:02:31.639
up five. Anything can happen. Let's go to the UEFA
42
00:02:31.719 --> 00:02:35.240
Champions League. Robert Lewandowski likely gonna come off the bench
43
00:02:35.319 --> 00:02:38.439
today for Barcelona in the second leg of the semi
44
00:02:38.439 --> 00:02:43.000
final against ter Benjamin Pivard of Inter. He took part
45
00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.120
in training yesterday for the first time since April twenty seventh,
46
00:02:46.199 --> 00:02:50.800
when he suffered an ankle injury against Roma Laltaro Martinez.
47
00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:54.000
He could play today as well. Took part in a
48
00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:57.400
little bit of training yesterday. Simoni and Zagi said that
49
00:02:57.520 --> 00:02:59.439
it's going to be down to how they feel in
50
00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:03.759
fitness tests before the match. Also, and Zogie said that
51
00:03:03.840 --> 00:03:06.319
his team will double up on La MiG Ya mal
52
00:03:07.159 --> 00:03:09.439
Danny Olmo had a comment about that. He said, Lamin
53
00:03:09.479 --> 00:03:11.120
has shown that he can play against one, two or
54
00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:13.280
three defenders. That just means we'll have a player free.
55
00:03:14.120 --> 00:03:18.599
Barsa have won only one of six away Champions League
56
00:03:18.599 --> 00:03:23.639
matches against Inter. Overall, they've managed five wins in twenty
57
00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:27.879
four matches in Italy twenty one percent. That's their lowest
58
00:03:27.879 --> 00:03:31.479
success rate against any foreign country in the competition in
59
00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:36.560
their history. Flip side Enter unbeaten in fifteen home matches
60
00:03:36.639 --> 00:03:40.800
in the Champions League, their longest undefeated run on their
61
00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:46.199
own turf in Europe since the nineteen eighties. So everything's
62
00:03:46.240 --> 00:03:48.840
set for Inter to get through here and it's going
63
00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:51.639
to be a sold out signed zero. A record for
64
00:03:51.800 --> 00:03:55.080
revenue will be set, the highest figure ever recorded for
65
00:03:55.159 --> 00:03:59.759
a match for a in Italian club around fourteen million
66
00:03:59.840 --> 00:04:02.879
year z row at the gate twelve point five million
67
00:04:03.080 --> 00:04:05.520
is what happened in the Champions League semi final two
68
00:04:05.560 --> 00:04:09.280
years ago, the Darby with Milan. It's the second time
69
00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:12.879
this season that Enter have gotten double digit taking, so
70
00:04:12.919 --> 00:04:17.720
eight figure takings that was against then the quarterfinal against
71
00:04:17.720 --> 00:04:21.120
Bayern ten million secured there so Enter raking in the
72
00:04:21.120 --> 00:04:25.199
money at the gate a new record today, sold out
73
00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:30.319
sun zero. Enter favored based on history. Can they get
74
00:04:30.319 --> 00:04:32.240
it done and advance to the final. It would be
75
00:04:32.279 --> 00:04:36.040
a surprise after what we saw from Barcelona previously. OPTA
76
00:04:36.319 --> 00:04:40.040
still gives Barcelona credit fifty six percent chance of reaching
77
00:04:40.120 --> 00:04:42.759
the final. The likelihood of extra time according to Opta
78
00:04:42.879 --> 00:04:46.600
is twenty four point seven percent. On Wednesday, PSG they
79
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:51.160
host Arsenal. PSG won one ZIL in London. Arsenal have
80
00:04:51.279 --> 00:04:55.360
never overturned a home first leg defeat in European competition.
81
00:04:55.959 --> 00:04:58.240
Five times they have not been able to do it,
82
00:04:58.560 --> 00:05:03.240
most recently against Barcelona in the twenty sixteen round of sixteen.
83
00:05:03.800 --> 00:05:08.360
PSG have won eighteen of the nineteen UEFA competition ties
84
00:05:08.480 --> 00:05:12.839
in which they recorded a first leg away win. PSG
85
00:05:13.079 --> 00:05:16.040
forty one point six percent favorites to win the tournament.
86
00:05:16.079 --> 00:05:19.720
Now Barcelona second, inter third, Arsenal fourth. Let's go to
87
00:05:19.759 --> 00:05:23.199
women's soccer. Joe Montemuro fifty five years old. He joined
88
00:05:23.319 --> 00:05:26.920
Leone last summer, was knocked out of the Champions League
89
00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:31.519
semi finals by his former club Arsenal. He is leaving Leone.
90
00:05:31.519 --> 00:05:35.319
He's expected to become the Australian national team coach, according
91
00:05:35.360 --> 00:05:39.680
to le Keep in the NWSL Racing Louisville's Ari Borges
92
00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:42.959
was handed a three game suspension for pushing referee Corbin
93
00:05:43.040 --> 00:05:47.040
May after the contentious match between Louisville and Portland that
94
00:05:47.199 --> 00:05:50.120
ended in a three to three draw multiple goals in
95
00:05:50.199 --> 00:05:55.160
stoppage time var interventions. That took a long time forty
96
00:05:55.199 --> 00:05:58.600
one combined fouls in NWSL record. But you can't push
97
00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:01.160
a referee. You're gonna get a lot suspension. Three games.
98
00:06:01.279 --> 00:06:04.800
If she pushed the referee and she only got three games, no, no, no, no, no,
99
00:06:04.839 --> 00:06:07.680
that's that's not enough. That's gonna have to be looked
100
00:06:07.720 --> 00:06:11.399
at by the US Soccer Federation. If it's more inadvertent,
101
00:06:11.560 --> 00:06:13.879
then yeah, you can get away with a suspension like that,
102
00:06:13.959 --> 00:06:16.040
But if that's a straight up push, three games is
103
00:06:16.319 --> 00:06:21.399
oof League MX femin Il new champions will be crowned
104
00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:25.120
this year. Monterrey eliminated in the semi finals. It will
105
00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:28.199
be Clube America and Patchuka, the best squads in the
106
00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:31.279
regular season. They will face off for the final o
107
00:06:31.399 --> 00:06:34.519
Gulus Club of America. They're looking for their third title
108
00:06:34.600 --> 00:06:38.680
in their history. Patchuka they are trying to get some
109
00:06:38.879 --> 00:06:42.240
revenge here in this one. They knocked out Monterrey four
110
00:06:42.279 --> 00:06:45.920
two on aggregate. Monterrey had won back to back titles
111
00:06:45.959 --> 00:06:49.720
coming into this. America beat their rivals Chievas four to two,
112
00:06:49.800 --> 00:06:53.360
also on aggregate. Club World Cup. I was waiting to
113
00:06:53.360 --> 00:06:55.439
see if we were gonna get word on this before
114
00:06:55.639 --> 00:06:59.560
posting this and we have not A verdict is expected
115
00:06:59.560 --> 00:07:03.680
today in Clube Leone's legal battle with FIFA. Their appeal
116
00:07:03.839 --> 00:07:07.040
to the Court of Arbitration for Sport supposed to be
117
00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:10.240
ruled on today. We have not heard anything yet. If
118
00:07:10.319 --> 00:07:13.120
Leone wins the appeal, then they'll be in the tournament
119
00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:15.639
and they'll play Chelsea on June sixteenth here in Atlanta.
120
00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:19.360
If they don't, if FIFA's ruling is upheld, LAFC and
121
00:07:19.399 --> 00:07:23.040
Clube America will face off in a play in game essentially,
122
00:07:23.560 --> 00:07:26.120
and the winner of that will play Chelsea on June
123
00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:30.519
sixteenth here. Meanwhile, a law lense, they have also appealed
124
00:07:30.519 --> 00:07:33.040
to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, saying that they
125
00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:36.759
should get the vacant spot based on coefficient ranking and
126
00:07:36.920 --> 00:07:39.519
the rules of the competition, saying that the only way
127
00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:42.959
you can have more than two teams from one country
128
00:07:43.120 --> 00:07:46.639
is if they are continental champions. The reason why everybody
129
00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:48.600
wants to get into this thing is the Club World
130
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:51.360
Cup is worth an initial nine point five to five
131
00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:55.079
million dollars plus a share of the one billion in
132
00:07:55.160 --> 00:07:59.639
total prize money depending on performance. So stay tuned. Also
133
00:07:59.680 --> 00:08:01.800
stay tuned. A new wrinkle to silly season will be
134
00:08:01.839 --> 00:08:04.160
the opportunity for teams in the Club World Cup to
135
00:08:04.160 --> 00:08:07.560
add players for the competition. Manchester United they are trying
136
00:08:07.560 --> 00:08:11.160
to hold on to Bruno Fernanje. Sources told ESPN that
137
00:08:11.160 --> 00:08:13.800
they're going to resist any offers, even from Al Hilal,
138
00:08:13.920 --> 00:08:17.360
who have added Fernanje as one of the big signings
139
00:08:17.399 --> 00:08:20.680
they want to make ahead of Club World Cup. They
140
00:08:20.680 --> 00:08:23.199
were trying to get Mosala, he decided to sign a
141
00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:26.040
contract extension at Liverpool, so now they have turned their
142
00:08:26.040 --> 00:08:29.680
attentions to Bruno Real Madrid. They want to get Trent
143
00:08:29.720 --> 00:08:33.000
Alexander Arnold in place ahead of the Club World Cup.
144
00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:36.399
They have planned talks with Liverpool to negotiate an early
145
00:08:36.519 --> 00:08:39.600
release from his contract a few weeks to get able
146
00:08:39.639 --> 00:08:42.600
to get into the Club World Cup squad. Let's continue
147
00:08:42.600 --> 00:08:46.000
the telenovela with Real Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti and Real Madrid
148
00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:48.759
have reached an agreement, according to reports, over the terms
149
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:52.279
of his departure, expected to leave before the end of
150
00:08:52.320 --> 00:08:56.559
the season coming out of Brazil. Their federation expects to
151
00:08:56.639 --> 00:08:59.399
name their new men's national team coach by the end
152
00:08:59.440 --> 00:09:03.039
of next week. Quote at the latest unquote, they are
153
00:09:03.080 --> 00:09:06.399
still considering Jorge jay Zeus, who was let go by
154
00:09:06.440 --> 00:09:11.840
Al Helal on May third, so he's free. Ancilati we
155
00:09:11.879 --> 00:09:14.519
don't know yet, although it sounds like he'll be free.
156
00:09:14.759 --> 00:09:17.720
We also don't know. With Madrid who's gonna take over
157
00:09:17.799 --> 00:09:19.679
and when they're gonna take over. They still want to
158
00:09:19.679 --> 00:09:23.360
bring in Shabi Alonzo. According to reports, it's set to
159
00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:25.919
go through, but will he take over in time for
160
00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:29.720
the Club World Cup. If he doesn't, then Santiago Solari,
161
00:09:29.799 --> 00:09:33.799
former manager of Real Madrid on an interim basis and
162
00:09:33.919 --> 00:09:38.120
also of Club America. He is the internal favorite candidate
163
00:09:38.159 --> 00:09:42.200
to take over as an interim until Shabi Alonzo starts
164
00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:47.240
preseason for next season. Stay tuned, it's a telenovela. There
165
00:09:47.279 --> 00:09:49.720
will be more twists and turns. More than likely. Let's
166
00:09:49.720 --> 00:09:53.399
go to Colombia. At top flight matchup in Colombia between
167
00:09:53.559 --> 00:09:57.519
Union Magdalena and Once, Caldas was suspended in the eightieth
168
00:09:57.559 --> 00:10:01.440
minute on Sunday, Magdalena fans in vaie the pitch and
169
00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:08.320
they were trailing one nil. They invaded the pitch and
170
00:10:08.600 --> 00:10:13.600
they also attacked the Caldas coach, Ernan Dario Arera and
171
00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:16.279
a ball boy Herrero was hit with a bottle in
172
00:10:16.320 --> 00:10:20.080
his leg. Local media reported that the home fans invaded
173
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:25.240
the pitch and protest against their team's bad season. Yeah.
174
00:10:25.720 --> 00:10:28.080
They were promoted into the top flight this past year,
175
00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:30.759
winless in sixteen games straight, down eight points at the
176
00:10:30.759 --> 00:10:34.159
bottom of the league. Yeah, it's a big black guy
177
00:10:34.360 --> 00:10:38.840
for Colombian football and it's not representative of what has
178
00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:43.679
been a really strong, growing league. Really disappointed to see
179
00:10:43.679 --> 00:10:45.039
this sort of thing. And you're going to have to
180
00:10:45.159 --> 00:10:48.879
rule very very severely against a team that has moved
181
00:10:48.919 --> 00:10:51.440
up to the top flight but can't act like a
182
00:10:51.480 --> 00:10:53.559
team in the top flight. Can't have these things happen,
183
00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:56.840
can't have fans rush in the field. And this is
184
00:10:56.840 --> 00:10:59.279
why fans rushing the field even after wins is dangerous
185
00:10:59.279 --> 00:11:02.639
because we're seeing more and more incidents between fans on
186
00:11:02.759 --> 00:11:06.360
the field or on the court in basketball and going
187
00:11:06.519 --> 00:11:10.039
at people on the opposing team even after winning. So
188
00:11:10.080 --> 00:11:12.519
it just can't happen. And we'll see what happens with
189
00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:15.519
Union Magdalena in Columbia, but I think it's going to
190
00:11:15.559 --> 00:11:18.720
be a severe punishment in the Premier League. The stars
191
00:11:18.720 --> 00:11:21.360
are aligning for Nottingham Forest and Chelsea to fight it
192
00:11:21.360 --> 00:11:24.720
out for the final Champions League spot Chelsea or fifth.
193
00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:26.960
They're in a spot right now. Forrest are two points
194
00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:29.000
back in sixth after their one to one draw at
195
00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:32.399
Crystal Palace, and these two teams play on the final day,
196
00:11:32.519 --> 00:11:34.559
so hopefully the final day will have a little bit
197
00:11:34.600 --> 00:11:38.559
of meaning for that. Aston Villa have compromised with Tottenham Hotspur.
198
00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:41.559
They've agreed to move their Premier League game that's set
199
00:11:41.639 --> 00:11:46.200
for May eighteenth to Friday May sixteenth. That gives Tottenham's
200
00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:49.679
Hotspur more time to prepare for the Europa League Final
201
00:11:49.720 --> 00:11:52.919
if they make it. Manchester United's match that weekend had
202
00:11:52.960 --> 00:11:56.120
already been moved to accommodate the Women's FA Cup final,
203
00:11:56.399 --> 00:11:59.799
so now everybody is in a fair situation. One more
204
00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:04.279
on English clubs. Colchester United in League Two. They are
205
00:12:04.320 --> 00:12:07.519
in advanced takeover talks with a US consortium headed by
206
00:12:07.559 --> 00:12:11.799
businessman Tim Foley. Robbie Cowling is the chairman at Colchester
207
00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:15.679
United right now, took over in two thousand and six.
208
00:12:16.200 --> 00:12:19.240
He confirmed the talks. Foley has been the owner of
209
00:12:19.399 --> 00:12:23.519
Lightwell Sports Group since twenty twenty. Previously worked for United
210
00:12:23.559 --> 00:12:26.519
World Wrestling, the governing body which oversees the sport for
211
00:12:26.600 --> 00:12:31.639
World Championships and Olympics, including Greco Roman competitions. Colchester missed
212
00:12:31.639 --> 00:12:33.759
out on a place in the League two playoffs. They
213
00:12:33.799 --> 00:12:36.799
finished tenth in the table at a scoreless draw against
214
00:12:36.840 --> 00:12:41.320
Barrow on the final day. Colchester was the championship club
215
00:12:41.320 --> 00:12:43.919
when Caling took over in two thousand and six. They
216
00:12:43.960 --> 00:12:47.399
had climbed from non league football to the championship and
217
00:12:47.799 --> 00:12:51.480
now they have been in League two nine straight seasons.
218
00:12:51.519 --> 00:12:54.360
They were relegated from the third tier in twenty sixteen.
219
00:12:55.120 --> 00:13:00.720
So interesting. Another wanna be Wrexham kind of lottery ticket
220
00:13:00.840 --> 00:13:04.000
potentially from tim Foley and Lightwell Sports Group. We'll see
221
00:13:04.039 --> 00:13:07.080
what happens there. Georgia High School soccer tonight will be
222
00:13:07.120 --> 00:13:10.919
in Dalton. The Catamount Boys host St. Pius Nearly twenty
223
00:13:10.960 --> 00:13:13.360
state championships between these two schools. It'll be a six
224
00:13:13.519 --> 00:13:17.279
thirty kickoff. We'll start our coverage about six fifteen or so.
225
00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:22.399
Mostly boys quarterfinals tonight. It was mostly girls quarterfinals yesterday.
226
00:13:22.799 --> 00:13:26.840
Previously unbeaten Brookwood they lost last night at Buford number
227
00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:29.639
one seed Wesleyan. They were knocked out in the quarters
228
00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:32.799
by number three love It Johns Creek's boys went on
229
00:13:32.879 --> 00:13:35.559
the road last night. They knocked off another number one
230
00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:40.320
seed from the region in Rome and Johnson's boys. We
231
00:13:40.320 --> 00:13:43.799
were up there Friday night Round A sixteen game against
232
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:47.159
Calhoun got stopped late in the first half. They tried
233
00:13:47.159 --> 00:13:50.039
to finish it on Saturday, couldn't more storms, so they
234
00:13:50.039 --> 00:13:54.080
had to play it yesterday. Johnson ended up conceding before
235
00:13:54.320 --> 00:13:56.960
the end of the first half, which there were twelve
236
00:13:57.000 --> 00:13:59.679
and a half minutes left when the game was stopped
237
00:13:59.720 --> 00:14:03.799
on Calhoun scored. It was one one at halftime. Johnson
238
00:14:03.799 --> 00:14:06.399
scored in the second half. They won two one. Now
239
00:14:06.440 --> 00:14:08.840
the Nights have to turn around and play at quarterfinal tonight.
240
00:14:09.240 --> 00:14:11.279
It was a three and a half hour trip back
241
00:14:11.320 --> 00:14:14.000
and forth to Calhoun yesterday and they got to get
242
00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:17.519
back out on the field today. Really difficult for Johnson,
243
00:14:17.519 --> 00:14:19.799
but there's only so much you can do. Greater Atlanta
244
00:14:19.840 --> 00:14:24.039
Christian won yesterday against Calvary Day Marist four to one,
245
00:14:24.080 --> 00:14:28.080

261
00:15:28.480 --> 00:15:31.360
advancing and getting to the state championships next week, So
262
00:15:31.399 --> 00:15:33.960

in the world of soccer, as always presented by our
275
00:16:11.200 --> 00:16:12.960
friends at Oglethorpe University.
1
00:00:04.320 --> 00:00:13.240
The welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso
2
00:00:13.320 --> 00:00:15.759
here on the SDH Network, presented by our friends at
3
00:00:15.800 --> 00:00:21.679
Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.
4
00:00:21.719 --> 00:00:24.120
I'm Jason Longshore. We're going to bounce all over the
5
00:00:24.160 --> 00:00:26.960
planet today with all the soccer news you need to
6
00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.559
know for Tuesday, May sixth. Let's start with the Lamar
7
00:00:30.640 --> 00:00:33.439
Hunt US Open Cup moves into the round of thirty two.
8
00:00:33.679 --> 00:00:37.280
Sixteen MLS teams enter the tournament here. Yes, we want
9
00:00:37.399 --> 00:00:39.640
all the MLS teams that are in the United States
10
00:00:40.039 --> 00:00:42.159
in the Open Cup. Yes, we want to see that
11
00:00:42.240 --> 00:00:45.520
starting next year. Yes, the roster rules need to expand
12
00:00:45.560 --> 00:00:50.280
to make that more comfortable for all the teams involved. Yes, yes, yes,
13
00:00:50.359 --> 00:00:54.479
but no this year. So it's the sixteen lowest placed
14
00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:57.560
US teams in the twenty twenty four standings that didn't
15
00:00:57.640 --> 00:01:03.320
qualify for the twenty twenty five CONCACAF Champions Cup. Six
16
00:01:03.719 --> 00:01:06.840
entrants from MLS are former Open Cup champions. One of
17
00:01:06.879 --> 00:01:10.400
those is DC United. They host Charleston Battery tonight. This
18
00:01:10.599 --> 00:01:14.719
is a rivalry match. Yes, it is nineteen ninety nine.
19
00:01:14.840 --> 00:01:18.959
Charleston upset DC United four to three in overtime. DC
20
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:22.879
players were very upset and they smashed coffee pots in
21
00:01:22.920 --> 00:01:24.760
the locker room. I mean, who does that. It's a
22
00:01:24.760 --> 00:01:26.599
coffee pot. Why are you smashing a coffee pot in
23
00:01:26.640 --> 00:01:30.000
the locker room? Come on, well, that started the coffee
24
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:32.560
pot Cup. So I guess the winner will get to
25
00:01:32.560 --> 00:01:35.239
advance in the tournament and get a coffee pot cup.
26
00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:37.879
So we'll see what happens. Good rivalry between DC and
27
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:40.359
Charleston should be a good match. Red Bulls they got
28
00:01:40.359 --> 00:01:43.680
to travel across the country to face the defending champions
29
00:01:43.719 --> 00:01:48.040
in the USL Championship, Colorado Springs. That's tonight. Also tonight
30
00:01:48.159 --> 00:01:53.200
to Southeastern regional matchups. North Carolina hosting Charlotte, Nashville hosting
31
00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:58.439
Chattanooga Red Wolves. Wednesday, Phoenix will host Houston. Wan Guerra,
32
00:01:58.560 --> 00:02:02.599
who won the twenty twenty three USL Championship while managing Phoenix,
33
00:02:03.040 --> 00:02:06.480
he returns as part of Houston's coaching staff, and also
34
00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:10.599
on Wednesday night, San Jose hosts Sacramento. Last two times
35
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:14.240
these teams have met, it was in Sacramento both times,
36
00:02:14.520 --> 00:02:17.479
and Republic won both times. Last year and in twenty
37
00:02:17.520 --> 00:02:20.759
twenty two. The three previous meetings before that were in
38
00:02:20.840 --> 00:02:24.039
San Jose and the Quakes won. So are the Quakes favored.
39
00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:26.599
We'll find out tonight. What San Jose Earthquakes this season.
40
00:02:26.680 --> 00:02:29.080
Anything could happen. They could score five, they could give
41
00:02:29.159 --> 00:02:31.639
up five. Anything can happen. Let's go to the UEFA
42
00:02:31.719 --> 00:02:35.240
Champions League. Robert Lewandowski likely gonna come off the bench
43
00:02:35.319 --> 00:02:38.439
today for Barcelona in the second leg of the semi
44
00:02:38.439 --> 00:02:43.000
final against ter Benjamin Pivard of Inter. He took part
45
00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.120
in training yesterday for the first time since April twenty seventh,
46
00:02:46.199 --> 00:02:50.800
when he suffered an ankle injury against Roma Laltaro Martinez.
47
00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:54.000
He could play today as well. Took part in a
48
00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:57.400
little bit of training yesterday. Simoni and Zagi said that
49
00:02:57.520 --> 00:02:59.439
it's going to be down to how they feel in
50
00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:03.759
fitness tests before the match. Also, and Zogie said that
51
00:03:03.840 --> 00:03:06.319
his team will double up on La MiG Ya mal
52
00:03:07.159 --> 00:03:09.439
Danny Olmo had a comment about that. He said, Lamin
53
00:03:09.479 --> 00:03:11.120
has shown that he can play against one, two or
54
00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:13.280
three defenders. That just means we'll have a player free.
55
00:03:14.120 --> 00:03:18.599
Barsa have won only one of six away Champions League
56
00:03:18.599 --> 00:03:23.639
matches against Inter. Overall, they've managed five wins in twenty
57
00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:27.879
four matches in Italy twenty one percent. That's their lowest
58
00:03:27.879 --> 00:03:31.479
success rate against any foreign country in the competition in
59
00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:36.560
their history. Flip side Enter unbeaten in fifteen home matches
60
00:03:36.639 --> 00:03:40.800
in the Champions League, their longest undefeated run on their
61
00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:46.199
own turf in Europe since the nineteen eighties. So everything's
62
00:03:46.240 --> 00:03:48.840
set for Inter to get through here and it's going
63
00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:51.639
to be a sold out signed zero. A record for
64
00:03:51.800 --> 00:03:55.080
revenue will be set, the highest figure ever recorded for
65
00:03:55.159 --> 00:03:59.759
a match for a in Italian club around fourteen million
66
00:03:59.840 --> 00:04:02.879
year z row at the gate twelve point five million
67
00:04:03.080 --> 00:04:05.520
is what happened in the Champions League semi final two
68
00:04:05.560 --> 00:04:09.280
years ago, the Darby with Milan. It's the second time
69
00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:12.879
this season that Enter have gotten double digit taking, so
70
00:04:12.919 --> 00:04:17.720
eight figure takings that was against then the quarterfinal against
71
00:04:17.720 --> 00:04:21.120
Bayern ten million secured there so Enter raking in the
72
00:04:21.120 --> 00:04:25.199
money at the gate a new record today, sold out
73
00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:30.319
sun zero. Enter favored based on history. Can they get
74
00:04:30.319 --> 00:04:32.240
it done and advance to the final. It would be
75
00:04:32.279 --> 00:04:36.040
a surprise after what we saw from Barcelona previously. OPTA
76
00:04:36.319 --> 00:04:40.040
still gives Barcelona credit fifty six percent chance of reaching
77
00:04:40.120 --> 00:04:42.759
the final. The likelihood of extra time according to Opta
78
00:04:42.879 --> 00:04:46.600
is twenty four point seven percent. On Wednesday, PSG they
79
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:51.160
host Arsenal. PSG won one ZIL in London. Arsenal have
80
00:04:51.279 --> 00:04:55.360
never overturned a home first leg defeat in European competition.
81
00:04:55.959 --> 00:04:58.240
Five times they have not been able to do it,
82
00:04:58.560 --> 00:05:03.240
most recently against Barcelona in the twenty sixteen round of sixteen.
83
00:05:03.800 --> 00:05:08.360
PSG have won eighteen of the nineteen UEFA competition ties
84
00:05:08.480 --> 00:05:12.839
in which they recorded a first leg away win. PSG
85
00:05:13.079 --> 00:05:16.040
forty one point six percent favorites to win the tournament.
86
00:05:16.079 --> 00:05:19.720
Now Barcelona second, inter third, Arsenal fourth. Let's go to
87
00:05:19.759 --> 00:05:23.199
women's soccer. Joe Montemuro fifty five years old. He joined
88
00:05:23.319 --> 00:05:26.920
Leone last summer, was knocked out of the Champions League
89
00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:31.519
semi finals by his former club Arsenal. He is leaving Leone.
90
00:05:31.519 --> 00:05:35.319
He's expected to become the Australian national team coach, according
91
00:05:35.360 --> 00:05:39.680
to le Keep in the NWSL Racing Louisville's Ari Borges
92
00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:42.959
was handed a three game suspension for pushing referee Corbin
93
00:05:43.040 --> 00:05:47.040
May after the contentious match between Louisville and Portland that
94
00:05:47.199 --> 00:05:50.120
ended in a three to three draw multiple goals in
95
00:05:50.199 --> 00:05:55.160
stoppage time var interventions. That took a long time forty
96
00:05:55.199 --> 00:05:58.600
one combined fouls in NWSL record. But you can't push
97
00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:01.160
a referee. You're gonna get a lot suspension. Three games.
98
00:06:01.279 --> 00:06:04.800
If she pushed the referee and she only got three games, no, no, no, no, no,
99
00:06:04.839 --> 00:06:07.680
that's that's not enough. That's gonna have to be looked
100
00:06:07.720 --> 00:06:11.399
at by the US Soccer Federation. If it's more inadvertent,
101
00:06:11.560 --> 00:06:13.879
then yeah, you can get away with a suspension like that,
102
00:06:13.959 --> 00:06:16.040
But if that's a straight up push, three games is
103
00:06:16.319 --> 00:06:21.399
oof League MX femin Il new champions will be crowned
104
00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:25.120
this year. Monterrey eliminated in the semi finals. It will
105
00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:28.199
be Clube America and Patchuka, the best squads in the
106
00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:31.279
regular season. They will face off for the final o
107
00:06:31.399 --> 00:06:34.519
Gulus Club of America. They're looking for their third title
108
00:06:34.600 --> 00:06:38.680
in their history. Patchuka they are trying to get some
109
00:06:38.879 --> 00:06:42.240
revenge here in this one. They knocked out Monterrey four
110
00:06:42.279 --> 00:06:45.920
two on aggregate. Monterrey had won back to back titles
111
00:06:45.959 --> 00:06:49.720
coming into this. America beat their rivals Chievas four to two,
112
00:06:49.800 --> 00:06:53.360
also on aggregate. Club World Cup. I was waiting to
113
00:06:53.360 --> 00:06:55.439
see if we were gonna get word on this before
114
00:06:55.639 --> 00:06:59.560
posting this and we have not A verdict is expected
115
00:06:59.560 --> 00:07:03.680
today in Clube Leone's legal battle with FIFA. Their appeal
116
00:07:03.839 --> 00:07:07.040
to the Court of Arbitration for Sport supposed to be
117
00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:10.240
ruled on today. We have not heard anything yet. If
118
00:07:10.319 --> 00:07:13.120
Leone wins the appeal, then they'll be in the tournament
119
00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:15.639
and they'll play Chelsea on June sixteenth here in Atlanta.
120
00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:19.360
If they don't, if FIFA's ruling is upheld, LAFC and
121
00:07:19.399 --> 00:07:23.040
Clube America will face off in a play in game essentially,
122
00:07:23.560 --> 00:07:26.120
and the winner of that will play Chelsea on June
123
00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:30.519
sixteenth here. Meanwhile, a law lense, they have also appealed
124
00:07:30.519 --> 00:07:33.040
to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, saying that they
125
00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:36.759
should get the vacant spot based on coefficient ranking and
126
00:07:36.920 --> 00:07:39.519
the rules of the competition, saying that the only way
127
00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:42.959
you can have more than two teams from one country
128
00:07:43.120 --> 00:07:46.639
is if they are continental champions. The reason why everybody
129
00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:48.600
wants to get into this thing is the Club World
130
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:51.360
Cup is worth an initial nine point five to five
131
00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:55.079
million dollars plus a share of the one billion in
132
00:07:55.160 --> 00:07:59.639
total prize money depending on performance. So stay tuned. Also
133
00:07:59.680 --> 00:08:01.800
stay tuned. A new wrinkle to silly season will be
134
00:08:01.839 --> 00:08:04.160
the opportunity for teams in the Club World Cup to
135
00:08:04.160 --> 00:08:07.560
add players for the competition. Manchester United they are trying
136
00:08:07.560 --> 00:08:11.160
to hold on to Bruno Fernanje. Sources told ESPN that
137
00:08:11.160 --> 00:08:13.800
they're going to resist any offers, even from Al Hilal,
138
00:08:13.920 --> 00:08:17.360
who have added Fernanje as one of the big signings
139
00:08:17.399 --> 00:08:20.680
they want to make ahead of Club World Cup. They
140
00:08:20.680 --> 00:08:23.199
were trying to get Mosala, he decided to sign a
141
00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:26.040
contract extension at Liverpool, so now they have turned their
142
00:08:26.040 --> 00:08:29.680
attentions to Bruno Real Madrid. They want to get Trent
143
00:08:29.720 --> 00:08:33.000
Alexander Arnold in place ahead of the Club World Cup.
144
00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:36.399
They have planned talks with Liverpool to negotiate an early
145
00:08:36.519 --> 00:08:39.600
release from his contract a few weeks to get able
146
00:08:39.639 --> 00:08:42.600
to get into the Club World Cup squad. Let's continue
147
00:08:42.600 --> 00:08:46.000
the telenovela with Real Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti and Real Madrid
148
00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:48.759
have reached an agreement, according to reports, over the terms
149
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:52.279
of his departure, expected to leave before the end of
150
00:08:52.320 --> 00:08:56.559
the season coming out of Brazil. Their federation expects to
151
00:08:56.639 --> 00:08:59.399
name their new men's national team coach by the end
152
00:08:59.440 --> 00:09:03.039
of next week. Quote at the latest unquote, they are
153
00:09:03.080 --> 00:09:06.399
still considering Jorge jay Zeus, who was let go by
154
00:09:06.440 --> 00:09:11.840
Al Helal on May third, so he's free. Ancilati we
155
00:09:11.879 --> 00:09:14.519
don't know yet, although it sounds like he'll be free.
156
00:09:14.759 --> 00:09:17.720
We also don't know. With Madrid who's gonna take over
157
00:09:17.799 --> 00:09:19.679
and when they're gonna take over. They still want to
158
00:09:19.679 --> 00:09:23.360
bring in Shabi Alonzo. According to reports, it's set to
159
00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:25.919
go through, but will he take over in time for
160
00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:29.720
the Club World Cup. If he doesn't, then Santiago Solari,
161
00:09:29.799 --> 00:09:33.799
former manager of Real Madrid on an interim basis and
162
00:09:33.919 --> 00:09:38.120
also of Club America. He is the internal favorite candidate
163
00:09:38.159 --> 00:09:42.200
to take over as an interim until Shabi Alonzo starts
164
00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:47.240
preseason for next season. Stay tuned, it's a telenovela. There
165
00:09:47.279 --> 00:09:49.720
will be more twists and turns. More than likely. Let's
166
00:09:49.720 --> 00:09:53.399
go to Colombia. At top flight matchup in Colombia between
167
00:09:53.559 --> 00:09:57.519
Union Magdalena and Once, Caldas was suspended in the eightieth
168
00:09:57.559 --> 00:10:01.440
minute on Sunday, Magdalena fans in vaie the pitch and
169
00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:08.320
they were trailing one nil. They invaded the pitch and
170
00:10:08.600 --> 00:10:13.600
they also attacked the Caldas coach, Ernan Dario Arera and
171
00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:16.279
a ball boy Herrero was hit with a bottle in
172
00:10:16.320 --> 00:10:20.080
his leg. Local media reported that the home fans invaded
173
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:25.240
the pitch and protest against their team's bad season. Yeah.
174
00:10:25.720 --> 00:10:28.080
They were promoted into the top flight this past year,
175
00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:30.759
winless in sixteen games straight, down eight points at the
176
00:10:30.759 --> 00:10:34.159
bottom of the league. Yeah, it's a big black guy
177
00:10:34.360 --> 00:10:38.840
for Colombian football and it's not representative of what has
178
00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:43.679
been a really strong, growing league. Really disappointed to see
179
00:10:43.679 --> 00:10:45.039
this sort of thing. And you're going to have to
180
00:10:45.159 --> 00:10:48.879
rule very very severely against a team that has moved
181
00:10:48.919 --> 00:10:51.440
up to the top flight but can't act like a
182
00:10:51.480 --> 00:10:53.559
team in the top flight. Can't have these things happen,
183
00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:56.840
can't have fans rush in the field. And this is
184
00:10:56.840 --> 00:10:59.279
why fans rushing the field even after wins is dangerous
185
00:10:59.279 --> 00:11:02.639
because we're seeing more and more incidents between fans on
186
00:11:02.759 --> 00:11:06.360
the field or on the court in basketball and going
187
00:11:06.519 --> 00:11:10.039
at people on the opposing team even after winning. So
188
00:11:10.080 --> 00:11:12.519
it just can't happen. And we'll see what happens with
189
00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:15.519
Union Magdalena in Columbia, but I think it's going to
190
00:11:15.559 --> 00:11:18.720
be a severe punishment in the Premier League. The stars
191
00:11:18.720 --> 00:11:21.360
are aligning for Nottingham Forest and Chelsea to fight it
192
00:11:21.360 --> 00:11:24.720
out for the final Champions League spot Chelsea or fifth.
193
00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:26.960
They're in a spot right now. Forrest are two points
194
00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:29.000
back in sixth after their one to one draw at
195
00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:32.399
Crystal Palace, and these two teams play on the final day,
196
00:11:32.519 --> 00:11:34.559
so hopefully the final day will have a little bit
197
00:11:34.600 --> 00:11:38.559
of meaning for that. Aston Villa have compromised with Tottenham Hotspur.
198
00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:41.559
They've agreed to move their Premier League game that's set
199
00:11:41.639 --> 00:11:46.200
for May eighteenth to Friday May sixteenth. That gives Tottenham's
200
00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:49.679
Hotspur more time to prepare for the Europa League Final
201
00:11:49.720 --> 00:11:52.919
if they make it. Manchester United's match that weekend had
202
00:11:52.960 --> 00:11:56.120
already been moved to accommodate the Women's FA Cup final,
203
00:11:56.399 --> 00:11:59.799
so now everybody is in a fair situation. One more
204
00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:04.279
on English clubs. Colchester United in League Two. They are
205
00:12:04.320 --> 00:12:07.519
in advanced takeover talks with a US consortium headed by
206
00:12:07.559 --> 00:12:11.799
businessman Tim Foley. Robbie Cowling is the chairman at Colchester
207
00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:15.679
United right now, took over in two thousand and six.
208
00:12:16.200 --> 00:12:19.240
He confirmed the talks. Foley has been the owner of
209
00:12:19.399 --> 00:12:23.519
Lightwell Sports Group since twenty twenty. Previously worked for United
210
00:12:23.559 --> 00:12:26.519
World Wrestling, the governing body which oversees the sport for
211
00:12:26.600 --> 00:12:31.639
World Championships and Olympics, including Greco Roman competitions. Colchester missed
212
00:12:31.639 --> 00:12:33.759
out on a place in the League two playoffs. They
213
00:12:33.799 --> 00:12:36.799
finished tenth in the table at a scoreless draw against
214
00:12:36.840 --> 00:12:41.320
Barrow on the final day. Colchester was the championship club
215
00:12:41.320 --> 00:12:43.919
when Caling took over in two thousand and six. They
216
00:12:43.960 --> 00:12:47.399
had climbed from non league football to the championship and
217
00:12:47.799 --> 00:12:51.480
now they have been in League two nine straight seasons.
218
00:12:51.519 --> 00:12:54.360
They were relegated from the third tier in twenty sixteen.
219
00:12:55.120 --> 00:13:00.720
So interesting. Another wanna be Wrexham kind of lottery ticket
220
00:13:00.840 --> 00:13:04.000
potentially from tim Foley and Lightwell Sports Group. We'll see
221
00:13:04.039 --> 00:13:07.080
what happens there. Georgia High School soccer tonight will be
222
00:13:07.120 --> 00:13:10.919
in Dalton. The Catamount Boys host St. Pius Nearly twenty
223
00:13:10.960 --> 00:13:13.360
state championships between these two schools. It'll be a six
224
00:13:13.519 --> 00:13:17.279
thirty kickoff. We'll start our coverage about six fifteen or so.
225
00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:22.399
Mostly boys quarterfinals tonight. It was mostly girls quarterfinals yesterday.
226
00:13:22.799 --> 00:13:26.840
Previously unbeaten Brookwood they lost last night at Buford number
227
00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:29.639
one seed Wesleyan. They were knocked out in the quarters
228
00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:32.799
by number three love It Johns Creek's boys went on
229
