WEBVTT
00:00:00.959 --> 00:00:02.160
Good morning.
00:00:02.879 --> 00:00:06.000
It's good to see all of you this morning.
00:00:06.400 --> 00:00:07.839
I know it's been a few weeks.
00:00:07.919 --> 00:00:15.439
It's been nice to have some time off, and I'm very appreciative of JJ and Eric who have been uh preaching for us and sharing God's word.
00:00:15.839 --> 00:00:23.519
And uh today it's my privilege and honor uh to kick off a brand new sermon series that we're gonna be in through the rest of August.
00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:26.399
But before we do that, uh you may be new here today.
00:00:26.480 --> 00:00:34.719
I know we have a lot of people for the baptism, or maybe uh something led you to be here today, or maybe you've been coming the last couple of weeks and I haven't had a chance to meet you yet.
00:00:34.880 --> 00:00:48.880
I just want to let you know that I will be in the middle of our West Lobby after the service, and I would love nothing more uh than if you wouldn't mind coming up and introducing yourself, and it just gives me an opportunity to get to know you a little bit more and thank you for joining us today.
00:00:49.200 --> 00:01:00.399
Also, want to say hi to all of those that are streaming in online, or maybe you're watching later on demand, and of course, all of our good friends uh that are watching in Alginac at First Lutheran Church.
00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:07.920
And today, uh as we as I mentioned, we're gonna be kicking off this new series for the next four weeks called the SG Path.
00:01:08.319 --> 00:01:11.519
How many of you want to know what the SG Path is all about?
00:01:12.239 --> 00:01:14.640
Maybe some of you have figured this out already.
00:01:14.879 --> 00:01:26.159
Every church kind of comes up with a method or a plan on how they believe that God is leading them to disciple the people that call that particular church home.
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:29.680
And so if you're a guest, it's a little bit different uh sermon today.
00:01:29.760 --> 00:01:31.439
You kind of get a peek behind the curtain.
00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:35.359
You kind of get to learn about how we operate here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:01:35.439 --> 00:01:42.560
And so today is kind of the introduction to the series, and then over the course of the next three weeks, we're going to be digging into the particulars of that.
00:01:42.719 --> 00:01:46.159
But if you would this morning, if you would allow me to just go back in time.
00:01:46.239 --> 00:01:48.000
Is that okay if I go back in time?
00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:51.760
Uh if you didn't know, Shepherd's Gate is a relatively young congregation.
00:01:51.840 --> 00:01:53.359
We're only 46 years old.
00:01:53.519 --> 00:01:55.359
We started in 1980.
00:01:55.439 --> 00:02:00.959
And I'm just wondering, is there anybody here that it started back in 1980?
00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:01.920
Anybody here?
00:02:02.079 --> 00:02:03.519
We got a couple, see, here we go.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:04.719
Or the 80s.
00:02:04.959 --> 00:02:07.040
Anybody that started here in the 80s?
00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:12.080
Uh the discipleship plan that we had here at Shepherd's Gate was called the Sixfold Covenant.
00:02:12.159 --> 00:02:23.919
And so there were six things that the founding pastor at the time, he actually uh pastor of the church for 19 years, incredible man, uh, that he used as the instrument to disciple people in the church.
00:02:24.159 --> 00:02:28.080
Well, after he retired and the next pastor came, his name's John Bjorgard.
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:29.439
He's actually the guy that hired me.
00:02:29.599 --> 00:02:36.080
He now lives in Arizona, so you know feel sorry for him in the winter that you know he's suffering for Jesus in Arizona.
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:46.560
Uh he took that sixfold covenant and he just tweaked two of the six principles within that, but most of it kind of continued on in our church.
00:02:46.800 --> 00:02:52.000
And then uh the last pastor, the one that that came before me, his name was John Trinkline.
00:02:52.159 --> 00:02:54.400
Anybody around during the John Trinkline era?
00:02:54.719 --> 00:02:55.919
You might remember this.
00:02:56.080 --> 00:03:01.759
Our kind of philosophy and all of this was called simple church, and he introduced that to our congregation.
00:03:01.919 --> 00:03:05.919
And so the words that we would use were up in and out.
00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:07.599
Do you guys remember that?
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:11.360
Now, he was here with us uh for nine years.
00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:13.759
John Bjorgard was with us for eight years.
00:03:13.919 --> 00:03:18.000
I'm now in my tenth year of being the lead pastor of Shepherd's Gate.
00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:19.360
No, wait a minute.
00:03:22.879 --> 00:03:26.719
Don't applaud uh just yet because I'm about to shoot myself in the foot, okay?
00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:32.879
How many of you know what our discipleship process has been the last five years?
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:36.479
Because we introduced a brand new discipleship path process five years ago.
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:38.159
It was January of 2021.
00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:39.360
Who knows it?
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:41.520
Go ahead, look around.
00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:42.960
The lights are on.
00:03:43.759 --> 00:03:47.439
This is when you do the reverse clap, which I don't even know what that is.
00:03:47.680 --> 00:03:48.000
Okay?
00:03:48.560 --> 00:03:50.400
Now, things change over time.
00:03:50.560 --> 00:04:04.400
In fact, uh the the church uh gurus and consultants will tell you that we now live in a day and age when technology and things are advancing so fast that your church literally changes every five years.
00:04:04.800 --> 00:04:06.319
Isn't that crazy?
00:04:06.639 --> 00:04:13.039
Every five years, because of the culture and the challenges of the culture and family dynamics, churches have to be on their toes.
00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:19.759
Churches have to figure out how to continue to reach the people in the community where the church has been established.
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.639
But the nice part is that the word of God never changes.
00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:29.439
And we are a Bible-believing, Bible-teaching church, and we love to go to the Word of God.
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:33.920
And what we do is we say, okay, God, this is your unchanging word.
00:04:34.240 --> 00:04:37.279
How now do we live in the culture that we find ourselves in?
00:04:37.439 --> 00:04:53.120
So I'm excited today because not only have we had a discipleship path five years ago, we are going today launch a brand new discipleship path that we believe God has laid on our heart so that you, dear church, can become closer in your relationship with Jesus.
00:04:53.279 --> 00:05:07.360
And so those that are outside of our walls that don't yet know the hope they can have in Jesus, that God is going to do something in their hearts and in their lives as we all come together and we embrace what it is that God has, in fact, led us to do.
00:05:07.439 --> 00:05:09.519
Does that sound good?
00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:10.959
Does that make sense?
00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:16.399
Okay, so stay with me for a second because I actually believe it's a new year.
00:05:19.680 --> 00:05:25.759
I don't believe the year changes when it goes from December 31st to January 1st.
00:05:26.160 --> 00:05:27.439
Do you know why?
00:05:27.759 --> 00:05:32.480
Most of us, we barely survive getting through Thanksgiving and Christmas.
00:05:32.959 --> 00:05:39.519
And then it's Michigan, so it's dark, it's cold, people are ornery.
00:05:40.720 --> 00:05:44.720
And so it's like, great, you stayed up for New Year's Eve, great, maybe you didn't.
00:05:44.959 --> 00:05:48.800
The new year is just kind of this like a lot of times people want to hit the reset button.
00:05:48.959 --> 00:05:56.399
I would submit to you today that for most of us, the reset of a new year actually starts September 1st.
00:05:57.120 --> 00:05:58.560
And you know why I believe that?
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:05.600
Because I believe we're actually all on the schedule of the kids in our lives or the grandkids in our lives.
00:06:05.759 --> 00:06:12.240
And equally as important, we are also uh we are also on the schedule of our Michigan weather.
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:15.360
And so here we are in the last month of the summer.
00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:21.360
We know fall is coming, we know football season is coming, okay, which has a huge influence on our.
00:06:21.680 --> 00:06:22.480
Yeah, look at you guys.
00:06:22.560 --> 00:06:26.879
Uh, some of you are already thinking about skipping church on certain certain Sundays, aren't you?
00:06:27.439 --> 00:06:28.480
But listen to me.
00:06:28.639 --> 00:06:33.600
To me, I would say that there is no better time to start over than right now.
00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:43.839
And so for this sermon series, what it's going to do is it's going to explain what we believe God is calling us to do as we head into September and the coming months.
00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:48.560
Not only is it a new year, but like I said, every five years, uh, churches change.
00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:49.279
They shift.
00:06:49.439 --> 00:06:50.480
People come, people go.
00:06:50.560 --> 00:06:54.959
Do you know there's more movement within churches in the summer than any other time of the year?
00:06:55.199 --> 00:07:04.639
I've signed letters of transfer where people are leaving Shepherd's Gate and going to other churches, and we've received transfer letters of people that are now saying that God is leading them to be part of this church.
00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:11.279
And so there's always these shifts that take place, and it just seems to always line up this time of year.
00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:17.120
And do you know who is the most excited about the shift that's taking place?
00:07:18.560 --> 00:07:21.040
Parents of children.
00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:30.240
My family was in Target yesterday, and I was so excited to go through the list that my kids had of their school supplies.
00:07:30.480 --> 00:07:41.040
And when I looked around, all I saw were the other parents smiling as we are just so ready to give our kids back to the school teachers.
00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:43.839
And all the parents in the room said, Amen.
00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:47.680
And what I also noticed was none of the kids were smiling.
00:07:48.800 --> 00:07:50.959
None of the kids were happy about this.
00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:56.800
And there was this other group of adults that seemed very bothered and wouldn't even go by the school supply area.
00:07:56.959 --> 00:07:58.319
You know what those people are?
00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:00.079
The teachers.
00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:02.639
Because teachers, your summer's coming to an end.
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:05.120
And here at Shepherd's Gate, we love school teachers.
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:09.360
We're going to be honoring you in a couple weeks, just like we do every year.
00:08:09.600 --> 00:08:19.120
But in the course of the church, certainly, people shift, staff shift, and one of our staff members in particular, uh, who is just up here doing the baptism, Eric Shanbern.
00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:21.040
Some of you are just now getting to know him.
00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:23.360
He's been with us for the last 11 months.
00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:29.920
And some of you might not realize that not only is he a pastor, but he actually used to be a professor.
00:08:30.160 --> 00:08:32.960
He taught at two different universities.
00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:37.840
Uh, he used to be a social worker as well, and then he also was an executive.
00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:39.759
He oversaw uh nonprofits.
00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:43.279
And so the way that I like to describe Eric is this.
00:08:43.759 --> 00:08:47.759
He's kind of, you know, like a utility player.
00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:51.679
You can put him in different areas and he seems to adapt and morph.
00:08:51.840 --> 00:08:56.799
Or if you're not into sports and the utility player analogy, it's he's kind of like a jackknife.
00:08:56.960 --> 00:08:58.240
Anybody have a jackknife?
00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:02.159
And so you can kind of just pick out what it is that we need him to do.
00:09:02.320 --> 00:09:04.240
He's in fact very educated.
00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:12.320
Uh he's got a bachelor's degree, three master's degree, and part of the reason that we pursued him and wanted him here was to help with this very thing.
00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:20.799
Help us build our discipleship process here at Shepherd's Gate, which is what he's been doing behind the scenes for the last 11 months.
00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:28.639
In fact, he was very influential in what you're about to hear the next four weeks, and he and I are going to be doing this sermon series together.
00:09:28.879 --> 00:09:34.559
And not only is he super smart and has all this experience, just look how good looking he is.
00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:38.399
I mean, bald is beautiful, isn't it?
00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:44.159
Sometimes you guys confuse us, but really, man, this guy is way better looking than I am.
00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:48.639
And if you think he's smart, you should meet his wife.
00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:51.200
Because she's even smarter than he is, aren't you?
00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:51.919
Go ahead, Jenny.
00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:52.159
Go ahead.
00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:55.120
If you haven't met Jenny, make sure you say hi to Jenny as well.
00:09:57.600 --> 00:10:05.519
I know some of you you've you've already just turned me out or you've turned me off today because you're so fixated on that Michigan logo.
00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:17.360
Some of you are like super excited and you're like, oh man, I didn't know he had a degree from Michigan, and all you Michigan state people are like, don't judge him because he went to the University of Michigan, all right?
00:10:17.519 --> 00:10:21.919
Those of you that love it, I can't wait for the rivalry that we're about to experience together.
00:10:22.080 --> 00:10:27.919
But not only do we have him in this position, he has a whole team of people here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:35.200
All of these people on staff specifically for the development of the discipleship that we do at Shepherd's Gate.
00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:39.360
So can we give all of these incredible people a hand here this morning?
00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:48.399
And one final thing, just so you guys are aware as well, is we're blessed here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:10:48.480 --> 00:10:50.480
There's a role within our network of churches.
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:57.039
There's 325 churches in Michigan, 6,000 nationwide, uh that we have a position called Deacons.
00:10:57.200 --> 00:11:01.840
And so we actually are blessed to have three deacons here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:11:01.919 --> 00:11:06.559
In fact, Pat and Joe just recently finished their studies, uh, have crossed that finish line.
00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:14.720
We have a fourth deacon uh that's actually transferred from another church that's going to be in the process of becoming a fourth deacon here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:11:14.879 --> 00:11:18.480
So I just want you to know like the the bench is stacked.
00:11:18.720 --> 00:11:24.000
We are blessed as a church, those that are working on discipleship here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:24.720
Amen?
00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:28.799
And the reason I say all of that is because I want you to know this.
00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:32.080
I want you to know my weakness.
00:11:32.799 --> 00:11:46.799
I want you to know one of the things that I struggle with, because my passion and the thing that I wake up most excited about every single day is figuring out how to get our church out into the community.
00:11:47.200 --> 00:11:55.360
And figuring out how we can get more and more of our people to go on trips all over the world to share the love of Jesus.
00:11:55.600 --> 00:12:07.200
In fact, if you're following along on social media, I just got back from Ethiopia just this last week to see if there was a door and an opportunity for us to expand our global mission endeavors.
00:12:07.519 --> 00:12:20.879
And because I know that I'm wired that way, because I know that's my natural inclination, I have to have staff members, I have to have people that are surrounding me that are in these key positions in our church to help our church move forward in this area.
00:12:21.039 --> 00:12:29.279
Because sometimes people will say, man, it seems like all you talk about is getting out in the community and getting out in the community and step out and serve and step out and serve 365.
00:12:29.440 --> 00:12:34.080
And those are all incredible things, but what about me?
00:12:35.440 --> 00:12:37.840
What about my relationship with the Lord?
00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:42.960
What about develop me, developing me as a follower of Jesus?
00:12:43.120 --> 00:12:52.399
And I want you to know that it's not about, you know, either or, it's about both, and and figuring out how together as a church we can be as strong as we possibly can be.
00:12:52.559 --> 00:12:53.840
Does that make sense to everybody?
00:12:54.320 --> 00:12:58.000
Alright, so not only do we have this, but it's also a new start.
00:12:58.480 --> 00:13:00.000
A new start in your life.
00:13:00.080 --> 00:13:02.399
And so now personalize it to you.
00:13:03.279 --> 00:13:07.759
Look back these last two months into your life.
00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:11.360
Has it been a while since you've been in church?
00:13:11.759 --> 00:13:19.039
Has it been a while since you've opened your Bible or prayed and invited God into a situation?
00:13:20.240 --> 00:13:26.639
Have you spent too much time the last two months inside because you think it's too hot?
00:13:27.519 --> 00:13:41.519
And so you've been on the television, or you've been playing video games, or you're just endlessly scrolling, and you realize that your relationship with the Lord has started to falter because of those things.
00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:44.320
Maybe it's this.
00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:48.399
Maybe you look different than you did two months ago.
00:13:48.639 --> 00:13:52.320
Maybe stress and anxiety has been plaguing you.
00:13:54.159 --> 00:13:56.320
Maybe you've been drinking too much.
00:13:57.360 --> 00:13:59.279
And you need to take a break.
00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:09.600
Maybe you said some things, or a relationship that you were in is fractured because of something somebody said or did.
00:14:11.919 --> 00:14:14.639
Maybe you posted something on social media.
00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:18.720
And you realize you shouldn't have done that.
00:14:19.919 --> 00:14:22.159
Anyone want to admit that this morning?
00:14:26.559 --> 00:14:38.080
Anybody think maybe it might be a good idea to go back and retract things if you know that that's not really the lifestyle and the image that God wants to portray in and through you as a child?
00:14:38.240 --> 00:14:38.960
I mean, what is it?
00:14:39.120 --> 00:14:40.960
Personalize it for you.
00:14:41.759 --> 00:14:44.480
And again, God is full of grace and mercy.
00:14:44.639 --> 00:14:46.480
You and I get to hit the reset button.
00:14:46.559 --> 00:14:50.320
God tells us that his mercies are new every single morning.
00:14:52.720 --> 00:14:54.240
But sometimes it can be difficult.
00:14:54.399 --> 00:14:59.279
Sometimes it actually takes us a few days and weeks to develop new habits.
00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:10.000
And not only what is it that does it look like for your life, what does it look like for your marriage and for your family as we head into a new season and a new year?
00:15:10.159 --> 00:15:19.759
The SG path is simply this it's how we encourage people who decide to call Shepherd's Gate their home church to become more fully devoted followers of Jesus.
00:15:19.919 --> 00:15:22.159
That's our heart's desire for you.
00:15:22.399 --> 00:15:29.919
And what a path does is it gives us common direction, common language, and a common experience that we can share together.
00:15:30.159 --> 00:15:34.960
And so our kids, students, adults, and care ministries don't all have their own philosophies.
00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:44.080
We all agree to play by the same rules and to use the same terms as we're discipling the church together as one cohesive unit.
00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:48.399
The path also provides clear next steps because this is important.
00:15:48.559 --> 00:15:51.039
Everyone grows at a different pace.
00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:52.000
Amen?
00:15:52.480 --> 00:15:56.320
A kid is gonna grow at a different pace than a student, than an adult.
00:15:56.639 --> 00:16:05.440
And we have to have freedom, we have to have latitude and patience for people as the Holy Spirit works deep in the hearts of people's lives.
00:16:05.679 --> 00:16:07.919
Now, I'm a simple man, if you didn't know that.
00:16:08.080 --> 00:16:10.399
And I love to go back to the basics.
00:16:10.480 --> 00:16:12.320
I don't have a fancy sermon for you this morning.
00:16:12.399 --> 00:16:15.679
So if you came for a fancy sermon, you're not gonna get it today, okay?
00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:19.440
I love going back to the basic scriptures, the fundamental scriptures.
00:16:19.600 --> 00:16:22.480
Some of you, you may have heard these scriptures thousands of times.
00:16:22.639 --> 00:16:24.080
By the way, I grew up in church.
00:16:24.240 --> 00:16:26.960
I've heard these scriptures thousands of times.
00:16:27.120 --> 00:16:29.679
I've actually heard these scriptures millions of times.
00:16:29.919 --> 00:16:30.559
You know why?
00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:34.639
Because I grew up in a church where we went Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night.
00:16:34.960 --> 00:16:38.159
And then we had Bible quiz practice on Saturday morning.
00:16:38.559 --> 00:16:41.279
Sometimes I wonder if we should just go back to that.
00:16:42.080 --> 00:16:43.679
But here's the thing.
00:16:43.919 --> 00:16:55.039
As I read these and I read them again this week, I was convicted by them, and I had to put these scriptures through the lens of my own life and get honest about my relationship with the Lord.
00:16:55.279 --> 00:16:58.240
And so the first one comes from the end of Matthew.
00:16:58.320 --> 00:17:03.919
These are Jesus' words to his disciples, and because he said it to the disciples, he says it to you and me.
00:17:04.079 --> 00:17:05.440
And he said these words.
00:17:05.599 --> 00:17:13.200
This is our mandate from God that we are to go and make disciples of all nations.
00:17:13.839 --> 00:17:18.000
Which is why we're not afraid to get on planes and go to other parts of the world.
00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:25.200
And the way that we do that is we baptize them in the triune God, name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
00:17:26.559 --> 00:17:27.920
Look at the next part.
00:17:29.119 --> 00:17:33.759
Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
00:17:35.440 --> 00:17:37.599
So, how are you taught the scriptures?
00:17:38.799 --> 00:17:41.119
How are you taught the commands of God?
00:17:44.160 --> 00:17:45.599
It's not a trick question.
00:17:46.400 --> 00:17:47.839
Someone gives a Sunday school answer.
00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:49.680
Just say, show up to church.
00:17:50.640 --> 00:17:52.240
Read my Bible.
00:17:52.799 --> 00:17:54.480
Talk to other Christians.
00:17:55.680 --> 00:17:57.599
It's pretty simple, folks.
00:17:59.119 --> 00:18:09.200
And that's what God instituted for us, and that's what He modeled for us, and the disciples in the book of Acts, that's what they continue to do after Jesus ascended into heaven.
00:18:09.920 --> 00:18:13.359
And for me, my primary teaching opportunity is on Sunday mornings.
00:18:13.519 --> 00:18:17.599
And you guys know that have been around that this September will be back in the book of Exodus.
00:18:17.680 --> 00:18:22.240
And I can't wait to start going chapter by chapter and verse by verse and digging into that.
00:18:22.559 --> 00:18:38.960
But we also have to have things outside of the Sunday morning experience to plug you into so that it's not just one hour on Sunday where you sit, listen, and leave, that there's other opportunities for you to connect and to be into God's word and to grow in your faith.
00:18:39.200 --> 00:18:41.200
Everyone's with me on that, correct?
00:18:41.519 --> 00:18:52.160
Here is the most important part the gospel at the end of this passage, where once again our loving Heavenly Father reminds us that He is the one that's with us.
00:18:52.400 --> 00:18:57.519
And the way that He is with us is through the Holy Spirit that resides in the heart of the believer.
00:18:57.839 --> 00:19:01.920
I am with you always to the very end of the age.
00:19:02.160 --> 00:19:11.759
Whether it's the time that you breathe your last breath, or whether it's the time that Jesus comes back and gets his church once and for all, which is what that means to the very end of the age.
00:19:12.079 --> 00:19:15.759
God will never leave us and he will never forsake us.
00:19:15.920 --> 00:19:20.960
He never stops working deep in our hearts and our lives, and praise be to God for that.
00:19:21.119 --> 00:19:21.759
Amen?
00:19:22.079 --> 00:19:24.079
So then what is a disciple?
00:19:24.799 --> 00:19:26.960
It's a nice big churchy word.
00:19:28.799 --> 00:19:30.799
What does it mean to be a disciple?
00:19:32.319 --> 00:19:33.920
Follower of Jesus.
00:19:37.680 --> 00:19:38.400
Teacher.
00:19:39.440 --> 00:19:41.119
Teaching others the faith.
00:19:43.279 --> 00:19:45.680
Are you a disciple of Jesus?
00:19:46.160 --> 00:19:49.680
Do you consider yourself a follower of Jesus?
00:19:50.240 --> 00:19:57.279
What I would submit to you today is this is that someone who leans in and trusts Jesus.
00:19:59.279 --> 00:20:01.839
God's the one that produces faith in our hearts and our lives.
00:20:02.000 --> 00:20:04.400
We don't bring anything to that equation.
00:20:04.559 --> 00:20:06.400
He's the one that does that work.
00:20:06.720 --> 00:20:10.559
And now that he's done that work, do we now trust him with our lives?
00:20:10.720 --> 00:20:12.000
Do we trust him with our finances?
00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:13.519
Do we trust him with our families?
00:20:13.680 --> 00:20:15.279
Do we trust him with our businesses?
00:20:15.519 --> 00:20:19.519
Do we actually trust God with our future?
00:20:21.759 --> 00:20:23.759
And what does it look like to do that?
00:20:23.920 --> 00:20:30.480
How do we get into the habit of leaning more into God's word instead of Fox News and CNN?
00:20:30.720 --> 00:20:37.039
How do we lean more into God's word and reading and absorbing his word than we are scrolling social media?
00:20:37.839 --> 00:20:46.319
How do we lean more into God's word instead of going to all the AI bots and developing a relationship with something that's not even human?
00:20:47.200 --> 00:20:48.000
Which is I know.
00:20:48.240 --> 00:20:49.680
Anybody else worried about AI?
00:20:51.279 --> 00:20:52.319
Just checking.
00:20:54.400 --> 00:20:56.319
Of course, it means following Jesus.
00:20:56.480 --> 00:20:57.599
He has set the example.
00:20:57.759 --> 00:20:58.799
We follow him.
00:20:59.279 --> 00:21:00.319
We read his word.
00:21:00.480 --> 00:21:02.319
We see the way that he interacted with people.
00:21:02.400 --> 00:21:04.240
We see the way that he loved people.
00:21:04.799 --> 00:21:07.440
We see the way that he called out sin in people's life.
00:21:07.519 --> 00:21:11.519
We see the way that he freely offered his grace and forgiveness.
00:21:11.759 --> 00:21:17.440
And each and every day, this is the cool part, we get to become more like Jesus.
00:21:18.880 --> 00:21:21.519
Which is the Holy Spirit's job in our lives.
00:21:21.759 --> 00:21:27.839
Constantly bring us to the foot of the cross, constantly forming us into the image of Jesus.
00:21:28.559 --> 00:21:31.279
So these words make disciples in Matthew 28.
00:21:31.359 --> 00:21:39.839
It's not just the moment of salvation, which praise God, we got to see that this morning in these two beautiful boys as a seed of faith was planted in their hearts.
00:21:40.319 --> 00:21:57.920
But that you and I, at our age and stage, are constantly being drawn into this passage, and that God is constantly renewing our minds and our spirits and drawing him into the relationship or drawing us into the relationship that he has for us.
00:21:58.640 --> 00:22:01.279
And you might be wondering, why do Call it a path.
00:22:01.680 --> 00:22:02.880
Seems weird.
00:22:03.359 --> 00:22:03.920
Right?
00:22:04.160 --> 00:22:06.640
The reason is it's because it's in Scripture.
00:22:06.880 --> 00:22:18.160
Another very well-known passage, if you're new to the church, where it says that God's word is a lamp for my feet.
00:22:18.720 --> 00:22:22.960
And this is what's going to light my path.
00:22:23.680 --> 00:22:25.680
How do I know where to go next?
00:22:25.759 --> 00:22:27.039
How do I know what job to take?
00:22:27.119 --> 00:22:29.680
How do I know what the next decision I should be?
00:22:29.920 --> 00:22:31.359
Get into God's word.
00:22:32.000 --> 00:22:39.440
Pray and invite him into the situation and watch in the way in which he illuminates your path and your future.
00:22:39.680 --> 00:22:45.119
In fact, it tells us that we're to trust God even more than ourselves.
00:22:46.880 --> 00:22:48.799
Even more than the AI.
00:22:57.920 --> 00:23:01.599
AI does not have all the answers to life's problems.
00:23:02.640 --> 00:23:06.960
Your pocketbook does not have all the answers to life's problems.
00:23:08.720 --> 00:23:20.880
Your closest friend, your mentor, the only one that is equipped to know every single thing about you is Jesus.
00:23:21.200 --> 00:23:30.960
And he is madly in love with you, and he wants nothing more than to become a greater influence in your life this next season.
00:23:31.759 --> 00:23:34.000
That's why we gladly submit to him.
00:23:34.400 --> 00:23:41.359
And as we submit to him, he's the one that's going to help us on this path of light, of life.
00:23:41.759 --> 00:23:47.039
He also says this if you're in the Word of God, you're his disciple.
00:23:47.519 --> 00:23:49.039
That's part of the definition.
00:23:49.200 --> 00:23:51.680
You want to know if someone's following Jesus?
00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:53.519
Are they reading their Bible?
00:23:53.680 --> 00:23:57.359
Are they taking time to allow God to speak into their lives?
00:23:57.519 --> 00:24:17.839
Or are they relying on themselves and their own education and any external factor versus opening God's word, which is living and active and has the power to pierce our hearts, to challenge us, and to actually change and transform us into the person that Jesus is calling us to be?
00:24:18.079 --> 00:24:22.880
And wouldn't you know the more we read the Bible, what are we going to find out?
00:24:25.119 --> 00:24:27.759
Anybody struggling with knowing what the truth is?
00:24:30.480 --> 00:24:33.839
Anybody feel sorry for this next generation coming up?
00:24:35.200 --> 00:24:39.440
Where they're flooded with information, flooded with garbage.
00:24:39.599 --> 00:24:43.759
It's no longer about needing to access content.
00:24:43.920 --> 00:24:46.000
They don't need to go to libraries.
00:24:46.240 --> 00:24:47.839
They don't have to open books.
00:24:48.000 --> 00:24:52.400
Everything is available on a little tiny device called a smartphone.
00:24:54.000 --> 00:25:05.119
And yet here we are, church, in 2026, trying to figure out what it is that we can do as a community to disciple this next generation coming up so that they know what the truth is.
00:25:05.359 --> 00:25:08.480
And I'm living this reality because I'm about to send my kids off.
00:25:08.640 --> 00:25:14.559
I only have a few more years of influence on my two boys before they take off, and who even knows where they're going?
00:25:14.720 --> 00:25:16.079
I actually don't even know where they're going.
00:25:16.240 --> 00:25:18.960
Sometimes it scares the living daylights out of me.
00:25:19.119 --> 00:25:27.759
But I realize the mandate from God as a parent and as a father to pour God's word into them that they would know the truth.
00:25:28.240 --> 00:25:35.680
So when the world comes against them and all of the other external processes and things come against them, they go back to the Word of God.
00:25:35.839 --> 00:25:40.799
They go back to what they were taught as a child and as a student.
00:25:41.680 --> 00:25:44.799
And then it's the Holy Spirit that brings those scriptures to mind.
00:25:44.880 --> 00:25:50.000
It's the Holy Spirit that continues to keep them on that path that God has destined for them.
00:25:50.160 --> 00:25:50.799
Amen?
00:25:51.440 --> 00:25:54.400
Not only do you need truth, what else do you need?
00:25:55.519 --> 00:26:03.200
You need truth and you need truth and all you Beatles fans, you need love.
00:26:03.519 --> 00:26:04.559
There we go.
00:26:05.519 --> 00:26:09.200
Because Jesus said, love one another.
00:26:11.440 --> 00:26:13.279
As I have loved you.
00:26:13.920 --> 00:26:14.960
You must.
00:26:15.119 --> 00:26:17.680
You don't, it's not a suggestion.
00:26:18.640 --> 00:26:22.319
It's not a, well, if you feel like it, no, no, no, no, no.
00:26:22.400 --> 00:26:24.240
It says you must love one another.
00:26:24.480 --> 00:26:25.519
Can I just be honest with you?
00:26:25.599 --> 00:26:27.839
There's some times I really don't want to love other people.
00:26:29.119 --> 00:26:30.880
Can I get really honest with you?
00:26:30.960 --> 00:26:34.160
There's sometimes I really don't want to even love people in this church.
00:26:37.359 --> 00:26:38.960
And I pray for them.
00:26:39.279 --> 00:26:42.480
God, why are they always so miserable?
00:26:43.759 --> 00:26:46.799
Is anything ever going right in their life?
00:26:47.039 --> 00:26:51.759
Why has the joy of the Lord been completely sucked out of them?
00:26:52.400 --> 00:26:54.799
And why am I enemy number one?
00:26:56.400 --> 00:26:57.680
I don't get it.
00:26:59.200 --> 00:27:06.480
Why are you in the same way dealing with people in your life that make you the villain?
00:27:06.720 --> 00:27:13.599
Or they say things about you, or they post things about you, or they gossip about you.
00:27:13.759 --> 00:27:14.960
I mean, can we just be honest?
00:27:15.039 --> 00:27:17.200
The world's pretty messed up, isn't it?
00:27:17.920 --> 00:27:24.160
And again, being in this season, in this time, when there's this shuffling that's taking place that happens every single year.
00:27:24.480 --> 00:27:27.759
God, would you put a hedge of protection around Shepherd's Gate?
00:27:27.839 --> 00:27:33.039
Would you call those to Shepherd's Gate for this season of ministry that you want here?
00:27:33.200 --> 00:27:52.880
That collectively as a church, we would lay down our own opinions, that we would lay down maybe even some of our disagreements, and instead we would humble ourselves and forgive each other and wash each other's feet and serve one another and say to Almighty God, we want to be on the greatest mission trip possible.
00:27:53.039 --> 00:28:06.160
That each and every day we wake up, God, we want to be on the path that you have for us, and we want to walk in your ways, and we want to know the truth that you have placed in our hearts, and we want to be able to go out and to love people unconditionally.
00:28:08.160 --> 00:28:10.079
Is that too hard to ask?
00:28:11.519 --> 00:28:12.160
Is it?
00:28:13.519 --> 00:28:14.319
I don't know.
00:28:14.559 --> 00:28:15.440
You tell me.
00:28:15.759 --> 00:28:17.599
These are his words, not mine.
00:28:18.079 --> 00:28:21.839
That's how people are gonna know by the way we treat each other.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:26.079
The way that we treat each other, just let that sink in for a moment.
00:28:26.319 --> 00:28:39.039
The way that we treat each other is how the unbelieving world will know that we truly are disciples, followers, image bearers of Jesus.
00:28:46.720 --> 00:28:48.079
We can't just hear it.
00:28:50.480 --> 00:28:53.839
We can't just sit, listen, and leave, come back the next Sunday.
00:28:54.319 --> 00:28:57.519
We actually have to put this stuff into practice.
00:28:58.400 --> 00:29:06.000
We actually have to make God the priority that he should be in our lives and in our family lives.
00:29:07.200 --> 00:29:10.319
This means there might need to be some sacrifices.
00:29:10.559 --> 00:29:16.000
Some things may need to shift and change on our family calendars.
00:29:16.880 --> 00:29:20.559
If this is a priority for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
00:29:20.720 --> 00:29:23.279
How then do you begin to understand that?
00:29:23.359 --> 00:29:26.640
And that's what we're gonna be unpacking in the next several weeks.
00:29:26.880 --> 00:29:31.279
I'm telling you, the team that's been working behind the scenes have been working for the last 11 months on this.
00:29:31.440 --> 00:29:35.440
It's gonna be incredible to walk through this process together.
00:29:36.400 --> 00:29:46.000
This is also equally as important is that this path is something to be, it is not something we do.
00:29:46.400 --> 00:29:51.200
It is not a checklist of religious obligations or religious duties.
00:29:52.240 --> 00:29:53.599
Do you know why?
00:29:54.079 --> 00:29:56.640
Because you and I will fail every single time.
00:29:56.960 --> 00:30:10.559
Anytime we're given a checklist, anytime that we think, okay, well, if I do this and I do this and I do this, and I go to church and then I serve, you know, as an usher, and then I go out and serve in the community, oh, and then I, you know, I go and do this and then I'm good.
00:30:11.200 --> 00:30:11.519
No.
00:30:12.480 --> 00:30:30.720
This is what makes Christianity and being part of a church family so unique is that it's the Holy Spirit that works in our lives, that the Holy Spirit is the one that's growing faith, and he's growing faith in different lives at different levels based on what he knows people need.
00:30:31.359 --> 00:30:35.839
All a discipleship path is is using the same language of saying, hey, have you tried this?
00:30:35.920 --> 00:30:36.559
Have you tried this?
00:30:36.640 --> 00:30:37.279
Have you tried this?
00:30:37.440 --> 00:30:43.519
Hey, here's a way in which you can grow in this area of your relationship with the Lord.
00:30:44.319 --> 00:30:48.960
Now, we also have a mission and vision statement here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:30:49.200 --> 00:30:51.440
This is going to continue to be the same.
00:30:51.599 --> 00:30:53.279
We are married to the mission and vision.
00:30:53.359 --> 00:30:57.200
Our mission here at Shepherd's Gate is to impact the world with the love of Jesus.
00:30:58.640 --> 00:31:00.240
That's the bullseye.
00:31:00.480 --> 00:31:04.160
At the end of the day, everything that we do comes back to this.
00:31:04.240 --> 00:31:07.839
And if it doesn't fall within this category, then we don't do it.
00:31:08.079 --> 00:31:11.839
And every church has a unique vision statement on how they live that out.
00:31:12.000 --> 00:31:16.079
For us, it's that we're going to value everyone we meet because we just read that we've got to love everybody.
00:31:16.319 --> 00:31:22.799
We're going to influence everywhere we go, which is local and global missions, and we're going to live generously with everything that we have.
00:31:23.359 --> 00:31:34.720
Not just our financial resources, but with our most precious resource, our time, and willingly go in serving those inside the church and outside the walls of our church.
00:31:35.440 --> 00:31:38.160
That's what we have committed to do as a church.
00:31:38.400 --> 00:31:47.680
The mission tells us why, our vision tells us what, but this path is going to tell us how we are going to make disciples who make disciples.
00:31:48.240 --> 00:32:00.720
And so, as I close this morning, as this is really just the setup and the lead up for the next couple of weeks, what we're going to discover is how to experience genuine connection.
00:32:01.119 --> 00:32:04.079
And I should have put comma again.
00:32:04.960 --> 00:32:05.920
Isn't it crazy?
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:25.759
Don't you find it fascinating that we are so connected to each other through text messaging and FaceTime and Zoom calls and social media and all these things, and yet the data over and over and over again is so overwhelming that we are the most disconnected people in the history of humanity.
00:32:27.200 --> 00:32:28.319
Isn't that sad?
00:32:29.119 --> 00:32:31.759
We should feel sad for ourselves.
00:32:32.240 --> 00:32:35.519
Wait, my smartphone's not making me more connected to people?
00:32:35.680 --> 00:32:36.880
Absolutely not.
00:32:37.119 --> 00:32:43.119
You need to be in relationship and community with other people because that's how God designed you to be.
00:32:43.359 --> 00:32:45.039
Sorry, I'm getting too much into next week.
00:32:45.200 --> 00:32:48.880
Number two, we're gonna help you and show you how you can grow in your faith.
00:32:49.039 --> 00:32:50.079
Maybe you didn't grow up in church.
00:32:50.160 --> 00:32:52.559
Maybe you don't know how to be a spiritual mom or spiritual dad.
00:32:52.640 --> 00:32:54.480
Maybe you're still struggling in some of these areas.
00:32:54.640 --> 00:32:55.039
Guess what?
00:32:55.200 --> 00:33:00.079
We are gonna give you the tools and the classes and the resources to be able to do this.
00:33:00.160 --> 00:33:11.839
And then finally, how then do we go out and we make an impact in the world that God has placed us in, starting right here in Shelby Township, Metro Detroit, state of Michigan, United States, and all over the world.
00:33:12.480 --> 00:33:13.759
So are you ready?
00:33:14.720 --> 00:33:16.079
Because this is it.
00:33:16.559 --> 00:33:18.400
We want you to find your people.
00:33:20.000 --> 00:33:25.599
We don't want anyone to be isolated or alone that calls Shepherd's Gate their home church.
00:33:25.839 --> 00:33:27.920
We want you to find your place here.
00:33:28.319 --> 00:33:31.440
That you are proud that you go to Shepherd's Gate.
00:33:31.599 --> 00:33:38.160
That you, that when you're out in the community, that you talk positively about this church, which I know so many of you do.
00:33:38.640 --> 00:33:52.160
And that you can't wait to gather back on Sunday mornings and connect with people here and hang out after the service and to be in your small groups and be in your Bible studies and be part of all the other ministries that we have going on in and through the weeks and the months ahead.
00:33:52.240 --> 00:34:09.119
And then finally, whatever that purpose is that God has created you and gifted you and educated you and set you to do, that we would help you figure that out so that you could live out your divine calling all the days of your life.
00:34:09.440 --> 00:34:10.079
Amen.
00:34:11.519 --> 00:34:14.239
Heavenly Father, I thank you for my friends this morning.
00:34:14.639 --> 00:34:19.360
God, it's so good to be back with this incredible body of believers.
00:34:20.559 --> 00:34:23.199
God, we recognize that life isn't always easy.
00:34:24.239 --> 00:34:32.800
Challenges come from so many different angles and directions, and so often it's easy to drift in our relationship with you.
00:34:34.079 --> 00:34:38.480
God, thank you for new beginnings, for new days, for new seasons, for new years.
00:34:38.719 --> 00:34:44.400
And I just believe that we are gonna head into one of those pivotal times here as a church.
00:34:44.719 --> 00:34:50.719
That God, the Holy Spirit, you are gonna draw us to each other and you are gonna draw us to you.
00:34:51.280 --> 00:35:02.880
And so as we go over these principles, as we learn just how it is that we are gonna be discipling people heading into the future, more importantly, God, that you're gonna show up in our lives.
00:35:04.000 --> 00:35:06.719
And that you're gonna do what only you can do.
00:35:08.239 --> 00:35:10.079
Wrap your arms around us.
00:35:11.360 --> 00:35:16.880
Mind us how much we are loved and valued by you.
00:35:18.159 --> 00:35:21.039
So you got to be with us the rest of this month.
00:35:21.360 --> 00:35:29.119
Be with families as they're preparing to send their kids back to school, be with our school teachers, administrators, coaches, how incredible these people are.
00:35:29.920 --> 00:35:34.480
God, those that homeschool their kids, special extra grace for them as well.
00:35:35.039 --> 00:35:45.679
And in all these things, as we prepare to do the ministry that's gonna happen here at Shepherd's Gate, be with our discipleship team, be with the leaders that serve in that area of the church.
00:35:46.000 --> 00:35:50.800
Knowing and trusting God, you have a bright future in store for us here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:35:50.880 --> 00:35:56.400
We love you, we thank you, we pray all these things in your most holy and precious name, and we all say together.
00:35:56.719 --> 00:35:57.360
Amen.
00:35:58.079 --> 00:36:00.480
What a great word, Pastor Tim.
00:36:05.199 --> 00:36:09.920
There's no identity more important than being his disciple.
00:36:10.880 --> 00:36:12.960
We live in a world that searches for identities.
00:36:13.119 --> 00:36:16.000
I hope you will join us, be with us the next few weeks.
00:36:16.239 --> 00:36:20.639
Let's dive in this together and see what we come up with.
00:36:20.880 --> 00:36:24.000
Hey, we're um at a point where we want to have our offering.
00:36:24.079 --> 00:36:26.239
I want to invite the ushers to come forward.
00:36:26.639 --> 00:36:30.719
I I really think of this time as a uh as a joyful time.
00:36:31.199 --> 00:36:31.519
Um
00:00:00.959 --> 00:00:02.160
Good morning.
00:00:02.879 --> 00:00:06.000
It's good to see all of you this morning.
00:00:06.400 --> 00:00:07.839
I know it's been a few weeks.
00:00:07.919 --> 00:00:15.439
It's been nice to have some time off, and I'm very appreciative of JJ and Eric who have been uh preaching for us and sharing God's word.
00:00:15.839 --> 00:00:23.519
And uh today it's my privilege and honor uh to kick off a brand new sermon series that we're gonna be in through the rest of August.
00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:26.399
But before we do that, uh you may be new here today.
00:00:26.480 --> 00:00:34.719
I know we have a lot of people for the baptism, or maybe uh something led you to be here today, or maybe you've been coming the last couple of weeks and I haven't had a chance to meet you yet.
00:00:34.880 --> 00:00:48.880
I just want to let you know that I will be in the middle of our West Lobby after the service, and I would love nothing more uh than if you wouldn't mind coming up and introducing yourself, and it just gives me an opportunity to get to know you a little bit more and thank you for joining us today.
00:00:49.200 --> 00:01:00.399
Also, want to say hi to all of those that are streaming in online, or maybe you're watching later on demand, and of course, all of our good friends uh that are watching in Alginac at First Lutheran Church.
00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:07.920
And today, uh as we as I mentioned, we're gonna be kicking off this new series for the next four weeks called the SG Path.
00:01:08.319 --> 00:01:11.519
How many of you want to know what the SG Path is all about?
00:01:12.239 --> 00:01:14.640
Maybe some of you have figured this out already.
00:01:14.879 --> 00:01:26.159
Every church kind of comes up with a method or a plan on how they believe that God is leading them to disciple the people that call that particular church home.
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:29.680
And so if you're a guest, it's a little bit different uh sermon today.
00:01:29.760 --> 00:01:31.439
You kind of get a peek behind the curtain.
00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:35.359
You kind of get to learn about how we operate here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:01:35.439 --> 00:01:42.560
And so today is kind of the introduction to the series, and then over the course of the next three weeks, we're going to be digging into the particulars of that.
00:01:42.719 --> 00:01:46.159
But if you would this morning, if you would allow me to just go back in time.
00:01:46.239 --> 00:01:48.000
Is that okay if I go back in time?
00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:51.760
Uh if you didn't know, Shepherd's Gate is a relatively young congregation.
00:01:51.840 --> 00:01:53.359
We're only 46 years old.
00:01:53.519 --> 00:01:55.359
We started in 1980.
00:01:55.439 --> 00:02:00.959
And I'm just wondering, is there anybody here that it started back in 1980?
00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:01.920
Anybody here?
00:02:02.079 --> 00:02:03.519
We got a couple, see, here we go.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:04.719
Or the 80s.
00:02:04.959 --> 00:02:07.040
Anybody that started here in the 80s?
00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:12.080
Uh the discipleship plan that we had here at Shepherd's Gate was called the Sixfold Covenant.
00:02:12.159 --> 00:02:23.919
And so there were six things that the founding pastor at the time, he actually uh pastor of the church for 19 years, incredible man, uh, that he used as the instrument to disciple people in the church.
00:02:24.159 --> 00:02:28.080
Well, after he retired and the next pastor came, his name's John Bjorgard.
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:29.439
He's actually the guy that hired me.
00:02:29.599 --> 00:02:36.080
He now lives in Arizona, so you know feel sorry for him in the winter that you know he's suffering for Jesus in Arizona.
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:46.560
Uh he took that sixfold covenant and he just tweaked two of the six principles within that, but most of it kind of continued on in our church.
00:02:46.800 --> 00:02:52.000
And then uh the last pastor, the one that that came before me, his name was John Trinkline.
00:02:52.159 --> 00:02:54.400
Anybody around during the John Trinkline era?
00:02:54.719 --> 00:02:55.919
You might remember this.
00:02:56.080 --> 00:03:01.759
Our kind of philosophy and all of this was called simple church, and he introduced that to our congregation.
00:03:01.919 --> 00:03:05.919
And so the words that we would use were up in and out.
00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:07.599
Do you guys remember that?
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:11.360
Now, he was here with us uh for nine years.
00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:13.759
John Bjorgard was with us for eight years.
00:03:13.919 --> 00:03:18.000
I'm now in my tenth year of being the lead pastor of Shepherd's Gate.
00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:19.360
No, wait a minute.
00:03:22.879 --> 00:03:26.719
Don't applaud uh just yet because I'm about to shoot myself in the foot, okay?
00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:32.879
How many of you know what our discipleship process has been the last five years?
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:36.479
Because we introduced a brand new discipleship path process five years ago.
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:38.159
It was January of 2021.
00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:39.360
Who knows it?
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:41.520
Go ahead, look around.
00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:42.960
The lights are on.
00:03:43.759 --> 00:03:47.439
This is when you do the reverse clap, which I don't even know what that is.
00:03:47.680 --> 00:03:48.000
Okay?
00:03:48.560 --> 00:03:50.400
Now, things change over time.
00:03:50.560 --> 00:04:04.400
In fact, uh the the church uh gurus and consultants will tell you that we now live in a day and age when technology and things are advancing so fast that your church literally changes every five years.
00:04:04.800 --> 00:04:06.319
Isn't that crazy?
00:04:06.639 --> 00:04:13.039
Every five years, because of the culture and the challenges of the culture and family dynamics, churches have to be on their toes.
00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:19.759
Churches have to figure out how to continue to reach the people in the community where the church has been established.
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.639
But the nice part is that the word of God never changes.
00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:29.439
And we are a Bible-believing, Bible-teaching church, and we love to go to the Word of God.
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:33.920
And what we do is we say, okay, God, this is your unchanging word.
00:04:34.240 --> 00:04:37.279
How now do we live in the culture that we find ourselves in?
00:04:37.439 --> 00:04:53.120
So I'm excited today because not only have we had a discipleship path five years ago, we are going today launch a brand new discipleship path that we believe God has laid on our heart so that you, dear church, can become closer in your relationship with Jesus.
00:04:53.279 --> 00:05:07.360
And so those that are outside of our walls that don't yet know the hope they can have in Jesus, that God is going to do something in their hearts and in their lives as we all come together and we embrace what it is that God has, in fact, led us to do.
00:05:07.439 --> 00:05:09.519
Does that sound good?
00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:10.959
Does that make sense?
00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:16.399
Okay, so stay with me for a second because I actually believe it's a new year.
00:05:19.680 --> 00:05:25.759
I don't believe the year changes when it goes from December 31st to January 1st.
00:05:26.160 --> 00:05:27.439
Do you know why?
00:05:27.759 --> 00:05:32.480
Most of us, we barely survive getting through Thanksgiving and Christmas.
00:05:32.959 --> 00:05:39.519
And then it's Michigan, so it's dark, it's cold, people are ornery.
00:05:40.720 --> 00:05:44.720
And so it's like, great, you stayed up for New Year's Eve, great, maybe you didn't.
00:05:44.959 --> 00:05:48.800
The new year is just kind of this like a lot of times people want to hit the reset button.
00:05:48.959 --> 00:05:56.399
I would submit to you today that for most of us, the reset of a new year actually starts September 1st.
00:05:57.120 --> 00:05:58.560
And you know why I believe that?
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:05.600
Because I believe we're actually all on the schedule of the kids in our lives or the grandkids in our lives.
00:06:05.759 --> 00:06:12.240
And equally as important, we are also uh we are also on the schedule of our Michigan weather.
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:15.360
And so here we are in the last month of the summer.
00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:21.360
We know fall is coming, we know football season is coming, okay, which has a huge influence on our.
00:06:21.680 --> 00:06:22.480
Yeah, look at you guys.
00:06:22.560 --> 00:06:26.879
Uh, some of you are already thinking about skipping church on certain certain Sundays, aren't you?
00:06:27.439 --> 00:06:28.480
But listen to me.
00:06:28.639 --> 00:06:33.600
To me, I would say that there is no better time to start over than right now.
00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:43.839
And so for this sermon series, what it's going to do is it's going to explain what we believe God is calling us to do as we head into September and the coming months.
00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:48.560
Not only is it a new year, but like I said, every five years, uh, churches change.
00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:49.279
They shift.
00:06:49.439 --> 00:06:50.480
People come, people go.
00:06:50.560 --> 00:06:54.959
Do you know there's more movement within churches in the summer than any other time of the year?
00:06:55.199 --> 00:07:04.639
I've signed letters of transfer where people are leaving Shepherd's Gate and going to other churches, and we've received transfer letters of people that are now saying that God is leading them to be part of this church.
00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:11.279
And so there's always these shifts that take place, and it just seems to always line up this time of year.
00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:17.120
And do you know who is the most excited about the shift that's taking place?
00:07:18.560 --> 00:07:21.040
Parents of children.
00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:30.240
My family was in Target yesterday, and I was so excited to go through the list that my kids had of their school supplies.
00:07:30.480 --> 00:07:41.040
And when I looked around, all I saw were the other parents smiling as we are just so ready to give our kids back to the school teachers.
00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:43.839
And all the parents in the room said, Amen.
00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:47.680
And what I also noticed was none of the kids were smiling.
00:07:48.800 --> 00:07:50.959
None of the kids were happy about this.
00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:56.800
And there was this other group of adults that seemed very bothered and wouldn't even go by the school supply area.
00:07:56.959 --> 00:07:58.319
You know what those people are?
00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:00.079
The teachers.
00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:02.639
Because teachers, your summer's coming to an end.
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:05.120
And here at Shepherd's Gate, we love school teachers.
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:09.360
We're going to be honoring you in a couple weeks, just like we do every year.
00:08:09.600 --> 00:08:19.120
But in the course of the church, certainly, people shift, staff shift, and one of our staff members in particular, uh, who is just up here doing the baptism, Eric Shanbern.
00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:21.040
Some of you are just now getting to know him.
00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:23.360
He's been with us for the last 11 months.
00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:29.920
And some of you might not realize that not only is he a pastor, but he actually used to be a professor.
00:08:30.160 --> 00:08:32.960
He taught at two different universities.
00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:37.840
Uh, he used to be a social worker as well, and then he also was an executive.
00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:39.759
He oversaw uh nonprofits.
00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:43.279
And so the way that I like to describe Eric is this.
00:08:43.759 --> 00:08:47.759
He's kind of, you know, like a utility player.
00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:51.679
You can put him in different areas and he seems to adapt and morph.
00:08:51.840 --> 00:08:56.799
Or if you're not into sports and the utility player analogy, it's he's kind of like a jackknife.
00:08:56.960 --> 00:08:58.240
Anybody have a jackknife?
00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:02.159
And so you can kind of just pick out what it is that we need him to do.
00:09:02.320 --> 00:09:04.240
He's in fact very educated.
00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:12.320
Uh he's got a bachelor's degree, three master's degree, and part of the reason that we pursued him and wanted him here was to help with this very thing.
00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:20.799
Help us build our discipleship process here at Shepherd's Gate, which is what he's been doing behind the scenes for the last 11 months.
00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:28.639
In fact, he was very influential in what you're about to hear the next four weeks, and he and I are going to be doing this sermon series together.
00:09:28.879 --> 00:09:34.559
And not only is he super smart and has all this experience, just look how good looking he is.
00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:38.399
I mean, bald is beautiful, isn't it?
00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:44.159
Sometimes you guys confuse us, but really, man, this guy is way better looking than I am.
00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:48.639
And if you think he's smart, you should meet his wife.
00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:51.200
Because she's even smarter than he is, aren't you?
00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:51.919
Go ahead, Jenny.
00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:52.159
Go ahead.
00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:55.120
If you haven't met Jenny, make sure you say hi to Jenny as well.
00:09:57.600 --> 00:10:05.519
I know some of you you've you've already just turned me out or you've turned me off today because you're so fixated on that Michigan logo.
00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:17.360
Some of you are like super excited and you're like, oh man, I didn't know he had a degree from Michigan, and all you Michigan state people are like, don't judge him because he went to the University of Michigan, all right?
00:10:17.519 --> 00:10:21.919
Those of you that love it, I can't wait for the rivalry that we're about to experience together.
00:10:22.080 --> 00:10:27.919
But not only do we have him in this position, he has a whole team of people here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:35.200
All of these people on staff specifically for the development of the discipleship that we do at Shepherd's Gate.
00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:39.360
So can we give all of these incredible people a hand here this morning?
00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:48.399
And one final thing, just so you guys are aware as well, is we're blessed here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:10:48.480 --> 00:10:50.480
There's a role within our network of churches.
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:57.039
There's 325 churches in Michigan, 6,000 nationwide, uh that we have a position called Deacons.
00:10:57.200 --> 00:11:01.840
And so we actually are blessed to have three deacons here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:11:01.919 --> 00:11:06.559
In fact, Pat and Joe just recently finished their studies, uh, have crossed that finish line.
00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:14.720
We have a fourth deacon uh that's actually transferred from another church that's going to be in the process of becoming a fourth deacon here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:11:14.879 --> 00:11:18.480
So I just want you to know like the the bench is stacked.
00:11:18.720 --> 00:11:24.000
We are blessed as a church, those that are working on discipleship here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:24.720
Amen?
00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:28.799
And the reason I say all of that is because I want you to know this.
00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:32.080
I want you to know my weakness.
00:11:32.799 --> 00:11:46.799
I want you to know one of the things that I struggle with, because my passion and the thing that I wake up most excited about every single day is figuring out how to get our church out into the community.
00:11:47.200 --> 00:11:55.360
And figuring out how we can get more and more of our people to go on trips all over the world to share the love of Jesus.
00:11:55.600 --> 00:12:07.200
In fact, if you're following along on social media, I just got back from Ethiopia just this last week to see if there was a door and an opportunity for us to expand our global mission endeavors.
00:12:07.519 --> 00:12:20.879
And because I know that I'm wired that way, because I know that's my natural inclination, I have to have staff members, I have to have people that are surrounding me that are in these key positions in our church to help our church move forward in this area.
00:12:21.039 --> 00:12:29.279
Because sometimes people will say, man, it seems like all you talk about is getting out in the community and getting out in the community and step out and serve and step out and serve 365.
00:12:29.440 --> 00:12:34.080
And those are all incredible things, but what about me?
00:12:35.440 --> 00:12:37.840
What about my relationship with the Lord?
00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:42.960
What about develop me, developing me as a follower of Jesus?
00:12:43.120 --> 00:12:52.399
And I want you to know that it's not about, you know, either or, it's about both, and and figuring out how together as a church we can be as strong as we possibly can be.
00:12:52.559 --> 00:12:53.840
Does that make sense to everybody?
00:12:54.320 --> 00:12:58.000
Alright, so not only do we have this, but it's also a new start.
00:12:58.480 --> 00:13:00.000
A new start in your life.
00:13:00.080 --> 00:13:02.399
And so now personalize it to you.
00:13:03.279 --> 00:13:07.759
Look back these last two months into your life.
00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:11.360
Has it been a while since you've been in church?
00:13:11.759 --> 00:13:19.039
Has it been a while since you've opened your Bible or prayed and invited God into a situation?
00:13:20.240 --> 00:13:26.639
Have you spent too much time the last two months inside because you think it's too hot?
00:13:27.519 --> 00:13:41.519
And so you've been on the television, or you've been playing video games, or you're just endlessly scrolling, and you realize that your relationship with the Lord has started to falter because of those things.
00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:44.320
Maybe it's this.
00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:48.399
Maybe you look different than you did two months ago.
00:13:48.639 --> 00:13:52.320
Maybe stress and anxiety has been plaguing you.
00:13:54.159 --> 00:13:56.320
Maybe you've been drinking too much.
00:13:57.360 --> 00:13:59.279
And you need to take a break.
00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:09.600
Maybe you said some things, or a relationship that you were in is fractured because of something somebody said or did.
00:14:11.919 --> 00:14:14.639
Maybe you posted something on social media.
00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:18.720
And you realize you shouldn't have done that.
00:14:19.919 --> 00:14:22.159
Anyone want to admit that this morning?
00:14:26.559 --> 00:14:38.080
Anybody think maybe it might be a good idea to go back and retract things if you know that that's not really the lifestyle and the image that God wants to portray in and through you as a child?
00:14:38.240 --> 00:14:38.960
I mean, what is it?
00:14:39.120 --> 00:14:40.960
Personalize it for you.
00:14:41.759 --> 00:14:44.480
And again, God is full of grace and mercy.
00:14:44.639 --> 00:14:46.480
You and I get to hit the reset button.
00:14:46.559 --> 00:14:50.320
God tells us that his mercies are new every single morning.
00:14:52.720 --> 00:14:54.240
But sometimes it can be difficult.
00:14:54.399 --> 00:14:59.279
Sometimes it actually takes us a few days and weeks to develop new habits.
00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:10.000
And not only what is it that does it look like for your life, what does it look like for your marriage and for your family as we head into a new season and a new year?
00:15:10.159 --> 00:15:19.759
The SG path is simply this it's how we encourage people who decide to call Shepherd's Gate their home church to become more fully devoted followers of Jesus.
00:15:19.919 --> 00:15:22.159
That's our heart's desire for you.
00:15:22.399 --> 00:15:29.919
And what a path does is it gives us common direction, common language, and a common experience that we can share together.
00:15:30.159 --> 00:15:34.960
And so our kids, students, adults, and care ministries don't all have their own philosophies.
00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:44.080
We all agree to play by the same rules and to use the same terms as we're discipling the church together as one cohesive unit.
00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:48.399
The path also provides clear next steps because this is important.
00:15:48.559 --> 00:15:51.039
Everyone grows at a different pace.
00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:52.000
Amen?
00:15:52.480 --> 00:15:56.320
A kid is gonna grow at a different pace than a student, than an adult.
00:15:56.639 --> 00:16:05.440
And we have to have freedom, we have to have latitude and patience for people as the Holy Spirit works deep in the hearts of people's lives.
00:16:05.679 --> 00:16:07.919
Now, I'm a simple man, if you didn't know that.
00:16:08.080 --> 00:16:10.399
And I love to go back to the basics.
00:16:10.480 --> 00:16:12.320
I don't have a fancy sermon for you this morning.
00:16:12.399 --> 00:16:15.679
So if you came for a fancy sermon, you're not gonna get it today, okay?
00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:19.440
I love going back to the basic scriptures, the fundamental scriptures.
00:16:19.600 --> 00:16:22.480
Some of you, you may have heard these scriptures thousands of times.
00:16:22.639 --> 00:16:24.080
By the way, I grew up in church.
00:16:24.240 --> 00:16:26.960
I've heard these scriptures thousands of times.
00:16:27.120 --> 00:16:29.679
I've actually heard these scriptures millions of times.
00:16:29.919 --> 00:16:30.559
You know why?
00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:34.639
Because I grew up in a church where we went Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night.
00:16:34.960 --> 00:16:38.159
And then we had Bible quiz practice on Saturday morning.
00:16:38.559 --> 00:16:41.279
Sometimes I wonder if we should just go back to that.
00:16:42.080 --> 00:16:43.679
But here's the thing.
00:16:43.919 --> 00:16:55.039
As I read these and I read them again this week, I was convicted by them, and I had to put these scriptures through the lens of my own life and get honest about my relationship with the Lord.
00:16:55.279 --> 00:16:58.240
And so the first one comes from the end of Matthew.
00:16:58.320 --> 00:17:03.919
These are Jesus' words to his disciples, and because he said it to the disciples, he says it to you and me.
00:17:04.079 --> 00:17:05.440
And he said these words.
00:17:05.599 --> 00:17:13.200
This is our mandate from God that we are to go and make disciples of all nations.
00:17:13.839 --> 00:17:18.000
Which is why we're not afraid to get on planes and go to other parts of the world.
00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:25.200
And the way that we do that is we baptize them in the triune God, name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
00:17:26.559 --> 00:17:27.920
Look at the next part.
00:17:29.119 --> 00:17:33.759
Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
00:17:35.440 --> 00:17:37.599
So, how are you taught the scriptures?
00:17:38.799 --> 00:17:41.119
How are you taught the commands of God?
00:17:44.160 --> 00:17:45.599
It's not a trick question.
00:17:46.400 --> 00:17:47.839
Someone gives a Sunday school answer.
00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:49.680
Just say, show up to church.
00:17:50.640 --> 00:17:52.240
Read my Bible.
00:17:52.799 --> 00:17:54.480
Talk to other Christians.
00:17:55.680 --> 00:17:57.599
It's pretty simple, folks.
00:17:59.119 --> 00:18:09.200
And that's what God instituted for us, and that's what He modeled for us, and the disciples in the book of Acts, that's what they continue to do after Jesus ascended into heaven.
00:18:09.920 --> 00:18:13.359
And for me, my primary teaching opportunity is on Sunday mornings.
00:18:13.519 --> 00:18:17.599
And you guys know that have been around that this September will be back in the book of Exodus.
00:18:17.680 --> 00:18:22.240
And I can't wait to start going chapter by chapter and verse by verse and digging into that.
00:18:22.559 --> 00:18:38.960
But we also have to have things outside of the Sunday morning experience to plug you into so that it's not just one hour on Sunday where you sit, listen, and leave, that there's other opportunities for you to connect and to be into God's word and to grow in your faith.
00:18:39.200 --> 00:18:41.200
Everyone's with me on that, correct?
00:18:41.519 --> 00:18:52.160
Here is the most important part the gospel at the end of this passage, where once again our loving Heavenly Father reminds us that He is the one that's with us.
00:18:52.400 --> 00:18:57.519
And the way that He is with us is through the Holy Spirit that resides in the heart of the believer.
00:18:57.839 --> 00:19:01.920
I am with you always to the very end of the age.
00:19:02.160 --> 00:19:11.759
Whether it's the time that you breathe your last breath, or whether it's the time that Jesus comes back and gets his church once and for all, which is what that means to the very end of the age.
00:19:12.079 --> 00:19:15.759
God will never leave us and he will never forsake us.
00:19:15.920 --> 00:19:20.960
He never stops working deep in our hearts and our lives, and praise be to God for that.
00:19:21.119 --> 00:19:21.759
Amen?
00:19:22.079 --> 00:19:24.079
So then what is a disciple?
00:19:24.799 --> 00:19:26.960
It's a nice big churchy word.
00:19:28.799 --> 00:19:30.799
What does it mean to be a disciple?
00:19:32.319 --> 00:19:33.920
Follower of Jesus.
00:19:37.680 --> 00:19:38.400
Teacher.
00:19:39.440 --> 00:19:41.119
Teaching others the faith.
00:19:43.279 --> 00:19:45.680
Are you a disciple of Jesus?
00:19:46.160 --> 00:19:49.680
Do you consider yourself a follower of Jesus?
00:19:50.240 --> 00:19:57.279
What I would submit to you today is this is that someone who leans in and trusts Jesus.
00:19:59.279 --> 00:20:01.839
God's the one that produces faith in our hearts and our lives.
00:20:02.000 --> 00:20:04.400
We don't bring anything to that equation.
00:20:04.559 --> 00:20:06.400
He's the one that does that work.
00:20:06.720 --> 00:20:10.559
And now that he's done that work, do we now trust him with our lives?
00:20:10.720 --> 00:20:12.000
Do we trust him with our finances?
00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:13.519
Do we trust him with our families?
00:20:13.680 --> 00:20:15.279
Do we trust him with our businesses?
00:20:15.519 --> 00:20:19.519
Do we actually trust God with our future?
00:20:21.759 --> 00:20:23.759
And what does it look like to do that?
00:20:23.920 --> 00:20:30.480
How do we get into the habit of leaning more into God's word instead of Fox News and CNN?
00:20:30.720 --> 00:20:37.039
How do we lean more into God's word and reading and absorbing his word than we are scrolling social media?
00:20:37.839 --> 00:20:46.319
How do we lean more into God's word instead of going to all the AI bots and developing a relationship with something that's not even human?
00:20:47.200 --> 00:20:48.000
Which is I know.
00:20:48.240 --> 00:20:49.680
Anybody else worried about AI?
00:20:51.279 --> 00:20:52.319
Just checking.
00:20:54.400 --> 00:20:56.319
Of course, it means following Jesus.
00:20:56.480 --> 00:20:57.599
He has set the example.
00:20:57.759 --> 00:20:58.799
We follow him.
00:20:59.279 --> 00:21:00.319
We read his word.
00:21:00.480 --> 00:21:02.319
We see the way that he interacted with people.
00:21:02.400 --> 00:21:04.240
We see the way that he loved people.
00:21:04.799 --> 00:21:07.440
We see the way that he called out sin in people's life.
00:21:07.519 --> 00:21:11.519
We see the way that he freely offered his grace and forgiveness.
00:21:11.759 --> 00:21:17.440
And each and every day, this is the cool part, we get to become more like Jesus.
00:21:18.880 --> 00:21:21.519
Which is the Holy Spirit's job in our lives.
00:21:21.759 --> 00:21:27.839
Constantly bring us to the foot of the cross, constantly forming us into the image of Jesus.
00:21:28.559 --> 00:21:31.279
So these words make disciples in Matthew 28.
00:21:31.359 --> 00:21:39.839
It's not just the moment of salvation, which praise God, we got to see that this morning in these two beautiful boys as a seed of faith was planted in their hearts.
00:21:40.319 --> 00:21:57.920
But that you and I, at our age and stage, are constantly being drawn into this passage, and that God is constantly renewing our minds and our spirits and drawing him into the relationship or drawing us into the relationship that he has for us.
00:21:58.640 --> 00:22:01.279
And you might be wondering, why do Call it a path.
00:22:01.680 --> 00:22:02.880
Seems weird.
00:22:03.359 --> 00:22:03.920
Right?
00:22:04.160 --> 00:22:06.640
The reason is it's because it's in Scripture.
00:22:06.880 --> 00:22:18.160
Another very well-known passage, if you're new to the church, where it says that God's word is a lamp for my feet.
00:22:18.720 --> 00:22:22.960
And this is what's going to light my path.
00:22:23.680 --> 00:22:25.680
How do I know where to go next?
00:22:25.759 --> 00:22:27.039
How do I know what job to take?
00:22:27.119 --> 00:22:29.680
How do I know what the next decision I should be?
00:22:29.920 --> 00:22:31.359
Get into God's word.
00:22:32.000 --> 00:22:39.440
Pray and invite him into the situation and watch in the way in which he illuminates your path and your future.
00:22:39.680 --> 00:22:45.119
In fact, it tells us that we're to trust God even more than ourselves.
00:22:46.880 --> 00:22:48.799
Even more than the AI.
00:22:57.920 --> 00:23:01.599
AI does not have all the answers to life's problems.
00:23:02.640 --> 00:23:06.960
Your pocketbook does not have all the answers to life's problems.
00:23:08.720 --> 00:23:20.880
Your closest friend, your mentor, the only one that is equipped to know every single thing about you is Jesus.
00:23:21.200 --> 00:23:30.960
And he is madly in love with you, and he wants nothing more than to become a greater influence in your life this next season.
00:23:31.759 --> 00:23:34.000
That's why we gladly submit to him.
00:23:34.400 --> 00:23:41.359
And as we submit to him, he's the one that's going to help us on this path of light, of life.
00:23:41.759 --> 00:23:47.039
He also says this if you're in the Word of God, you're his disciple.
00:23:47.519 --> 00:23:49.039
That's part of the definition.
00:23:49.200 --> 00:23:51.680
You want to know if someone's following Jesus?
00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:53.519
Are they reading their Bible?
00:23:53.680 --> 00:23:57.359
Are they taking time to allow God to speak into their lives?
00:23:57.519 --> 00:24:17.839
Or are they relying on themselves and their own education and any external factor versus opening God's word, which is living and active and has the power to pierce our hearts, to challenge us, and to actually change and transform us into the person that Jesus is calling us to be?
00:24:18.079 --> 00:24:22.880
And wouldn't you know the more we read the Bible, what are we going to find out?
00:24:25.119 --> 00:24:27.759
Anybody struggling with knowing what the truth is?
00:24:30.480 --> 00:24:33.839
Anybody feel sorry for this next generation coming up?
00:24:35.200 --> 00:24:39.440
Where they're flooded with information, flooded with garbage.
00:24:39.599 --> 00:24:43.759
It's no longer about needing to access content.
00:24:43.920 --> 00:24:46.000
They don't need to go to libraries.
00:24:46.240 --> 00:24:47.839
They don't have to open books.
00:24:48.000 --> 00:24:52.400
Everything is available on a little tiny device called a smartphone.
00:24:54.000 --> 00:25:05.119
And yet here we are, church, in 2026, trying to figure out what it is that we can do as a community to disciple this next generation coming up so that they know what the truth is.
00:25:05.359 --> 00:25:08.480
And I'm living this reality because I'm about to send my kids off.
00:25:08.640 --> 00:25:14.559
I only have a few more years of influence on my two boys before they take off, and who even knows where they're going?
00:25:14.720 --> 00:25:16.079
I actually don't even know where they're going.
00:25:16.240 --> 00:25:18.960
Sometimes it scares the living daylights out of me.
00:25:19.119 --> 00:25:27.759
But I realize the mandate from God as a parent and as a father to pour God's word into them that they would know the truth.
00:25:28.240 --> 00:25:35.680
So when the world comes against them and all of the other external processes and things come against them, they go back to the Word of God.
00:25:35.839 --> 00:25:40.799
They go back to what they were taught as a child and as a student.
00:25:41.680 --> 00:25:44.799
And then it's the Holy Spirit that brings those scriptures to mind.
00:25:44.880 --> 00:25:50.000
It's the Holy Spirit that continues to keep them on that path that God has destined for them.
00:25:50.160 --> 00:25:50.799
Amen?
00:25:51.440 --> 00:25:54.400
Not only do you need truth, what else do you need?
00:25:55.519 --> 00:26:03.200
You need truth and you need truth and all you Beatles fans, you need love.
00:26:03.519 --> 00:26:04.559
There we go.
00:26:05.519 --> 00:26:09.200
Because Jesus said, love one another.
00:26:11.440 --> 00:26:13.279
As I have loved you.
00:26:13.920 --> 00:26:14.960
You must.
00:26:15.119 --> 00:26:17.680
You don't, it's not a suggestion.
00:26:18.640 --> 00:26:22.319
It's not a, well, if you feel like it, no, no, no, no, no.
00:26:22.400 --> 00:26:24.240
It says you must love one another.
00:26:24.480 --> 00:26:25.519
Can I just be honest with you?
00:26:25.599 --> 00:26:27.839
There's some times I really don't want to love other people.
00:26:29.119 --> 00:26:30.880
Can I get really honest with you?
00:26:30.960 --> 00:26:34.160
There's sometimes I really don't want to even love people in this church.
00:26:37.359 --> 00:26:38.960
And I pray for them.
00:26:39.279 --> 00:26:42.480
God, why are they always so miserable?
00:26:43.759 --> 00:26:46.799
Is anything ever going right in their life?
00:26:47.039 --> 00:26:51.759
Why has the joy of the Lord been completely sucked out of them?
00:26:52.400 --> 00:26:54.799
And why am I enemy number one?
00:26:56.400 --> 00:26:57.680
I don't get it.
00:26:59.200 --> 00:27:06.480
Why are you in the same way dealing with people in your life that make you the villain?
00:27:06.720 --> 00:27:13.599
Or they say things about you, or they post things about you, or they gossip about you.
00:27:13.759 --> 00:27:14.960
I mean, can we just be honest?
00:27:15.039 --> 00:27:17.200
The world's pretty messed up, isn't it?
00:27:17.920 --> 00:27:24.160
And again, being in this season, in this time, when there's this shuffling that's taking place that happens every single year.
00:27:24.480 --> 00:27:27.759
God, would you put a hedge of protection around Shepherd's Gate?
00:27:27.839 --> 00:27:33.039
Would you call those to Shepherd's Gate for this season of ministry that you want here?
00:27:33.200 --> 00:27:52.880
That collectively as a church, we would lay down our own opinions, that we would lay down maybe even some of our disagreements, and instead we would humble ourselves and forgive each other and wash each other's feet and serve one another and say to Almighty God, we want to be on the greatest mission trip possible.
00:27:53.039 --> 00:28:06.160
That each and every day we wake up, God, we want to be on the path that you have for us, and we want to walk in your ways, and we want to know the truth that you have placed in our hearts, and we want to be able to go out and to love people unconditionally.
00:28:08.160 --> 00:28:10.079
Is that too hard to ask?
00:28:11.519 --> 00:28:12.160
Is it?
00:28:13.519 --> 00:28:14.319
I don't know.
00:28:14.559 --> 00:28:15.440
You tell me.
00:28:15.759 --> 00:28:17.599
These are his words, not mine.
00:28:18.079 --> 00:28:21.839
That's how people are gonna know by the way we treat each other.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:26.079
The way that we treat each other, just let that sink in for a moment.
00:28:26.319 --> 00:28:39.039
The way that we treat each other is how the unbelieving world will know that we truly are disciples, followers, image bearers of Jesus.
00:28:46.720 --> 00:28:48.079
We can't just hear it.
00:28:50.480 --> 00:28:53.839
We can't just sit, listen, and leave, come back the next Sunday.
00:28:54.319 --> 00:28:57.519
We actually have to put this stuff into practice.
00:28:58.400 --> 00:29:06.000
We actually have to make God the priority that he should be in our lives and in our family lives.
00:29:07.200 --> 00:29:10.319
This means there might need to be some sacrifices.
00:29:10.559 --> 00:29:16.000
Some things may need to shift and change on our family calendars.
00:29:16.880 --> 00:29:20.559
If this is a priority for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
00:29:20.720 --> 00:29:23.279
How then do you begin to understand that?
00:29:23.359 --> 00:29:26.640
And that's what we're gonna be unpacking in the next several weeks.
00:29:26.880 --> 00:29:31.279
I'm telling you, the team that's been working behind the scenes have been working for the last 11 months on this.
00:29:31.440 --> 00:29:35.440
It's gonna be incredible to walk through this process together.
00:29:36.400 --> 00:29:46.000
This is also equally as important is that this path is something to be, it is not something we do.
00:29:46.400 --> 00:29:51.200
It is not a checklist of religious obligations or religious duties.
00:29:52.240 --> 00:29:53.599
Do you know why?
00:29:54.079 --> 00:29:56.640
Because you and I will fail every single time.
00:29:56.960 --> 00:30:10.559
Anytime we're given a checklist, anytime that we think, okay, well, if I do this and I do this and I do this, and I go to church and then I serve, you know, as an usher, and then I go out and serve in the community, oh, and then I, you know, I go and do this and then I'm good.
00:30:11.200 --> 00:30:11.519
No.
00:30:12.480 --> 00:30:30.720
This is what makes Christianity and being part of a church family so unique is that it's the Holy Spirit that works in our lives, that the Holy Spirit is the one that's growing faith, and he's growing faith in different lives at different levels based on what he knows people need.
00:30:31.359 --> 00:30:35.839
All a discipleship path is is using the same language of saying, hey, have you tried this?
00:30:35.920 --> 00:30:36.559
Have you tried this?
00:30:36.640 --> 00:30:37.279
Have you tried this?
00:30:37.440 --> 00:30:43.519
Hey, here's a way in which you can grow in this area of your relationship with the Lord.
00:30:44.319 --> 00:30:48.960
Now, we also have a mission and vision statement here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:30:49.200 --> 00:30:51.440
This is going to continue to be the same.
00:30:51.599 --> 00:30:53.279
We are married to the mission and vision.
00:30:53.359 --> 00:30:57.200
Our mission here at Shepherd's Gate is to impact the world with the love of Jesus.
00:30:58.640 --> 00:31:00.240
That's the bullseye.
00:31:00.480 --> 00:31:04.160
At the end of the day, everything that we do comes back to this.
00:31:04.240 --> 00:31:07.839
And if it doesn't fall within this category, then we don't do it.
00:31:08.079 --> 00:31:11.839
And every church has a unique vision statement on how they live that out.
00:31:12.000 --> 00:31:16.079
For us, it's that we're going to value everyone we meet because we just read that we've got to love everybody.
00:31:16.319 --> 00:31:22.799
We're going to influence everywhere we go, which is local and global missions, and we're going to live generously with everything that we have.
00:31:23.359 --> 00:31:34.720
Not just our financial resources, but with our most precious resource, our time, and willingly go in serving those inside the church and outside the walls of our church.
00:31:35.440 --> 00:31:38.160
That's what we have committed to do as a church.
00:31:38.400 --> 00:31:47.680
The mission tells us why, our vision tells us what, but this path is going to tell us how we are going to make disciples who make disciples.
00:31:48.240 --> 00:32:00.720
And so, as I close this morning, as this is really just the setup and the lead up for the next couple of weeks, what we're going to discover is how to experience genuine connection.
00:32:01.119 --> 00:32:04.079
And I should have put comma again.
00:32:04.960 --> 00:32:05.920
Isn't it crazy?
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:25.759
Don't you find it fascinating that we are so connected to each other through text messaging and FaceTime and Zoom calls and social media and all these things, and yet the data over and over and over again is so overwhelming that we are the most disconnected people in the history of humanity.
00:32:27.200 --> 00:32:28.319
Isn't that sad?
00:32:29.119 --> 00:32:31.759
We should feel sad for ourselves.
00:32:32.240 --> 00:32:35.519
Wait, my smartphone's not making me more connected to people?
00:32:35.680 --> 00:32:36.880
Absolutely not.
00:32:37.119 --> 00:32:43.119
You need to be in relationship and community with other people because that's how God designed you to be.
00:32:43.359 --> 00:32:45.039
Sorry, I'm getting too much into next week.
00:32:45.200 --> 00:32:48.880
Number two, we're gonna help you and show you how you can grow in your faith.
00:32:49.039 --> 00:32:50.079
Maybe you didn't grow up in church.
00:32:50.160 --> 00:32:52.559
Maybe you don't know how to be a spiritual mom or spiritual dad.
00:32:52.640 --> 00:32:54.480
Maybe you're still struggling in some of these areas.
00:32:54.640 --> 00:32:55.039
Guess what?
00:32:55.200 --> 00:33:00.079
We are gonna give you the tools and the classes and the resources to be able to do this.
00:33:00.160 --> 00:33:11.839
And then finally, how then do we go out and we make an impact in the world that God has placed us in, starting right here in Shelby Township, Metro Detroit, state of Michigan, United States, and all over the world.
00:33:12.480 --> 00:33:13.759
So are you ready?
00:33:14.720 --> 00:33:16.079
Because this is it.
00:33:16.559 --> 00:33:18.400
We want you to find your people.
00:33:20.000 --> 00:33:25.599
We don't want anyone to be isolated or alone that calls Shepherd's Gate their home church.
00:33:25.839 --> 00:33:27.920
We want you to find your place here.
00:33:28.319 --> 00:33:31.440
That you are proud that you go to Shepherd's Gate.
00:33:31.599 --> 00:33:38.160
That you, that when you're out in the community, that you talk positively about this church, which I know so many of you do.
00:33:38.640 --> 00:33:52.160
And that you can't wait to gather back on Sunday mornings and connect with people here and hang out after the service and to be in your small groups and be in your Bible studies and be part of all the other ministries that we have going on in and through the weeks and the months ahead.
00:33:52.240 --> 00:34:09.119
And then finally, whatever that purpose is that God has created you and gifted you and educated you and set you to do, that we would help you figure that out so that you could live out your divine calling all the days of your life.
00:34:09.440 --> 00:34:10.079
Amen.
00:34:11.519 --> 00:34:14.239
Heavenly Father, I thank you for my friends this morning.
00:34:14.639 --> 00:34:19.360
God, it's so good to be back with this incredible body of believers.
00:34:20.559 --> 00:34:23.199
God, we recognize that life isn't always easy.
00:34:24.239 --> 00:34:32.800
Challenges come from so many different angles and directions, and so often it's easy to drift in our relationship with you.
00:34:34.079 --> 00:34:38.480
God, thank you for new beginnings, for new days, for new seasons, for new years.
00:34:38.719 --> 00:34:44.400
And I just believe that we are gonna head into one of those pivotal times here as a church.
00:34:44.719 --> 00:34:50.719
That God, the Holy Spirit, you are gonna draw us to each other and you are gonna draw us to you.
00:34:51.280 --> 00:35:02.880
And so as we go over these principles, as we learn just how it is that we are gonna be discipling people heading into the future, more importantly, God, that you're gonna show up in our lives.
00:35:04.000 --> 00:35:06.719
And that you're gonna do what only you can do.
00:35:08.239 --> 00:35:10.079
Wrap your arms around us.
00:35:11.360 --> 00:35:16.880
Mind us how much we are loved and valued by you.
00:35:18.159 --> 00:35:21.039
So you got to be with us the rest of this month.
00:35:21.360 --> 00:35:29.119
Be with families as they're preparing to send their kids back to school, be with our school teachers, administrators, coaches, how incredible these people are.
00:35:29.920 --> 00:35:34.480
God, those that homeschool their kids, special extra grace for them as well.
00:35:35.039 --> 00:35:45.679
And in all these things, as we prepare to do the ministry that's gonna happen here at Shepherd's Gate, be with our discipleship team, be with the leaders that serve in that area of the church.
00:35:46.000 --> 00:35:50.800
Knowing and trusting God, you have a bright future in store for us here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:35:50.880 --> 00:35:56.400
We love you, we thank you, we pray all these things in your most holy and precious name, and we all say together.
00:35:56.719 --> 00:35:57.360
Amen.
00:35:58.079 --> 00:36:00.480
What a great word, Pastor Tim.
00:36:05.199 --> 00:36:09.920
There's no identity more important than being his disciple.
00:36:10.880 --> 00:36:12.960
We live in a world that searches for identities.
00:36:13.119 --> 00:36:16.000
I hope you will join us, be with us the next few weeks.
00:36:16.239 --> 00:36:20.639
Let's dive in this together and see what we come up with.
00:36:20.880 --> 00:36:24.000
Hey, we're um at a point where we want to have our offering.
00:36:24.079 --> 00:36:26.239
I want to invite the ushers to come forward.
00:36:26.639 --> 00:36:30.719
I I really think of this time as a uh as a joyful time.
00:36:31.199 --> 00:36:31.519
Um
