00:00:00.479 --> 00:00:03.839
When did paying attention become weird?
00:00:04.080 --> 00:00:11.839
Seriously, at what point did just sitting somewhere drinking a cup of coffee and noticing the world around us become the strange thing?
00:00:12.080 --> 00:00:13.919
Because apparently it happened.
00:00:14.080 --> 00:00:24.239
Stick around, and I'll tell you the observation I had during an accidental moment at a coffee shop with nothing to do but observe.
00:00:42.560 --> 00:00:46.240
I pulled into the parking lot and decided to try something a little bit different.
00:00:46.560 --> 00:00:48.640
I left my phone in the car.
00:00:48.960 --> 00:00:52.000
I know that sounds daunting for some of y'all, even me.
00:00:52.159 --> 00:00:55.840
Now, it doesn't sound like a big deal to others, but but think about that.
00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:59.359
It's this little bitty rectangle that's always within reach.
00:00:59.439 --> 00:01:03.439
It's in our pocket, it's on the table, sitting in the cup holder.
00:01:03.600 --> 00:01:07.439
Half the time we don't even need it, we just grab it out of habit.
00:01:07.599 --> 00:01:10.879
So I walked inside, I ordered my coffee, and I sat down.
00:01:10.959 --> 00:01:15.040
And for the first time in a long time, I had absolutely nothing to do.
00:01:15.200 --> 00:01:16.640
Just me and my coffee.
00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:24.159
No screen to check, no notification to answer, no reason to reach into my pocket, just me and my hot cup of coffee.
00:01:24.319 --> 00:01:25.519
And you know what's funny?
00:01:25.760 --> 00:01:27.760
It it wasn't relaxing at first.
00:01:27.920 --> 00:01:29.439
It was it was uncomfortable.
00:01:29.519 --> 00:01:31.359
I actually didn't know what to do with myself.
00:01:31.680 --> 00:01:34.239
So I started doing the only thing left to do.
00:01:34.319 --> 00:01:35.680
I started looking around.
00:01:35.840 --> 00:01:38.000
And that's when I noticed something.
00:01:38.239 --> 00:01:41.120
Almost everyone was looking down.
00:01:41.439 --> 00:01:49.040
People were drinking coffee, sitting together, waiting for orders, taking breaks from work, but almost everyone had their phone in their hand.
00:01:49.120 --> 00:01:50.560
And that's when it hit me.
00:01:50.879 --> 00:01:54.239
I'm the weird one, which is not an unusual observation.
00:01:54.319 --> 00:01:58.159
But but this particular case it was because I was the only one without a phone.
00:01:58.239 --> 00:02:02.959
I'm the guy sitting by myself at Starbucks, just looking around the room.
00:02:03.120 --> 00:02:05.120
And I felt like the creepy stalker.
00:02:05.280 --> 00:02:15.360
You know, the guy who who looks like he's either stalking his next victim, he's teleported here from the 18th century, or he's waiting on a blind date who's definitely not showing up.
00:02:15.520 --> 00:02:16.080
That was me.
00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:20.159
I almost wanted to announce to the room, hey everybody, don't worry, I'm normal.
00:02:20.319 --> 00:02:25.599
I just left my phone in the car, which by the way would have immediately confirmed to everyone that I was not normal.
00:02:25.759 --> 00:02:28.879
But the more I sat there, the more I realized something.
00:02:29.039 --> 00:02:31.360
The strange thing wasn't really Starbucks.
00:02:31.520 --> 00:02:36.000
The strange thing was how strange it felt to be present.
00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:37.520
When did that happen?
00:02:37.759 --> 00:02:40.960
When did sitting quietly become awkward?
00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:46.960
When did having nothing to do, nothing to distract us feel like something was missing?
00:02:47.120 --> 00:02:50.080
And listen, I'm not I'm not the anti-technology guy.
00:02:50.159 --> 00:02:50.879
I love my phone.
00:02:51.039 --> 00:02:52.400
I use my phone all of the time.
00:02:52.560 --> 00:02:53.199
Most of us do.
00:02:53.360 --> 00:02:58.639
The fact that you're even watching this video means that you've invested in some kind of technology, and as have I.
00:02:58.879 --> 00:03:02.319
But that morning made me ask myself a question.
00:03:02.639 --> 00:03:07.360
Am I using my phone or has my phone trained me?
00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:09.280
Because I think there's a difference.
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:12.560
One is a tool and the other is a master.
00:03:12.639 --> 00:03:17.520
And I think sometimes we don't realize how uncomfortable we become with silence.
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:20.639
Quiet moments used to be part of normal life.
00:03:20.879 --> 00:03:26.719
Standing in line, waiting for someone, sitting at a red light, drinking coffee.
00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:34.400
Those were moments where our minds wandered, where we noticed people, where we thought about life.
00:03:34.639 --> 00:03:36.879
Now every space gets filled.
00:03:37.039 --> 00:03:44.479
And I wonder sometimes if we are so busy filling every quiet moment that we miss what God is trying to show us.
00:03:44.639 --> 00:03:50.159
There's this moment in scripture where Jesus visits two sisters named Mary and Martha.
00:03:50.319 --> 00:03:52.719
And honestly, I think most of us understand Martha.
00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:59.120
Martha is getting things done, she's preparing, she's serving, she sees things that need to happen, and she handles them.
00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:00.240
She's a go-getter.
00:04:00.479 --> 00:04:02.560
Most of us would probably admire Martha.
00:04:02.639 --> 00:04:06.800
She's productive, but Mary, her sister, does something completely different.
00:04:06.960 --> 00:04:09.759
She simply sits with Jesus and listens.
00:04:10.159 --> 00:04:16.000
And Martha, she gets frustrated because from her perspective, Mary isn't doing anything.
00:04:16.240 --> 00:04:18.240
But Jesus sees it differently.
00:04:18.399 --> 00:04:30.639
In Luke chapter 10, verse 41 and 42, it says, Martha, Martha, you were anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.
00:04:31.279 --> 00:04:36.240
Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.
00:04:36.480 --> 00:04:40.879
I love that Jesus doesn't criticize Martha for working hard.
00:04:41.120 --> 00:04:51.439
The problem wasn't that Martha was doing bad things, the problem was that she was so distracted by everything happening around her, she almost missed who was right in front of her.
00:04:51.600 --> 00:04:53.439
And that's what hit me at Starbucks.
00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:54.959
What am I missing?
00:04:55.199 --> 00:04:56.879
Because I'm distracted.
00:04:57.040 --> 00:05:00.399
Maybe it's it's not just about a phone, maybe it's about attention.
00:05:00.639 --> 00:05:04.480
Because attention is one of the most valuable things we have.
00:05:04.639 --> 00:05:09.360
Whatever gets our attention eventually shapes our direction.
00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:15.680
But maybe God does some of his best work in the spaces that we keep trying to fill.
00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:28.399
Maybe there's conversations we're missing, people we're not noticing, moments God has placed right in front of us, all because we've trained ourselves to look down instead of looking around.
00:05:28.720 --> 00:05:32.720
So maybe being the weird guy at Starbucks isn't the worst thing.
00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:36.800
Maybe weird is exactly what we need to be sometimes.
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:45.759
Maybe we need more moments where we leave the phone behind, look up, and remember there's a whole world happening right in front of us.
00:05:45.920 --> 00:05:51.680
And who knows, maybe you might even meet another weird person sitting right there without a phone.
00:05:51.839 --> 00:05:55.040
Just don't stare at them too long, then it gets weird again.
00:05:58.560 --> 00:06:02.959
Hey guys, thank you for joining me on another episode of Shankation.
00:06:03.120 --> 00:06:09.600
Hey, if this episode was worth eight minutes of your time, do me one favor and hit follow.
00:06:09.839 --> 00:06:10.480
That's it.
00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:16.959
It's the one thing that helps this show find other golfers, and it might just introduce them to Jesus.
00:06:17.279 --> 00:06:18.959
So enjoy your week.
00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:22.720
Until next time, keep chasing better.
