00:00:01
Speaker 1: Previously new Padres ownership, which we will hear from presumably you have to it's coming in how it.
00:00:10
Speaker 2: Works, it feels like it's we're getting finally to that stage.
00:00:13
Speaker 1: So they say the same thing in Pittsburgh and Baltimore that they're gonna say in San Diego. We want to win, we want to do right by the community.
00:00:19
Speaker 3: On San Diego Sports seven six, what do.
00:00:21
Speaker 1: We actually want them to act like as they take over this team? Sean Schaeffer Allen Slee.
00:00:27
Speaker 2: Well, the only thing that I think I would say is run a good business with the foundation with San Diego's best interests.
00:00:34
Speaker 3: From the East set San Diego Sports seven sixty Studios, hear Schaeffer and sleewa San.
00:00:41
Speaker 1: Diego in Southern California. What's going on Friday afternoon? Allen, America's finest city, Padres Guardian's coming up?
00:00:49
Speaker 4: How are you when you're gonna do some stand up?
00:00:52
Speaker 5: You gotta do like a little stand up.
00:00:53
Speaker 4: Allen thinks I'm like the funniest person in the world.
00:00:56
Speaker 1: But most of the funniness you think that I possess is off.
00:01:00
Speaker 5: No, it's all off air. No, No, I don't mean yeah, but I'm saying like most of it.
00:01:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, you the stuff you had me dying was random.
00:01:09
Speaker 2: Yesterday, I was dying in this studio but had nothing to do with on air, had nothing to do.
00:01:13
Speaker 5: With on air.
00:01:14
Speaker 2: And it's not anything that I mean, it's not like you're saying anything bad or wrong that we can't share.
00:01:19
Speaker 5: But I was dying.
00:01:20
Speaker 1: I just go to the most ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.
00:01:24
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:01:24
Speaker 5: All I'm saying is you're underrated.
00:01:26
Speaker 2: You're underrated in the comedic in the comedic area.
00:01:30
Speaker 1: Okay, well, I appreciate you saying that. I appreciate you saying.
00:01:33
Speaker 5: That died yesterday. All right, So.
00:01:35
Speaker 1: Kevin Acy, who joined us yesterday has made more time for us today to join us. Kevin acyle join us from Cleveland, Ohio coming up, it made more time. He wrote about Steven Susan Junior, the first year hitting coach of the Padres.
00:01:47
Speaker 4: So we'll get more into that coming up this hour.
00:01:49
Speaker 2: What I'm not going to say anything about the whole how he kills it in the locker room there.
00:01:54
Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I know, he like, wasn't got that. You got quiet.
00:01:58
Speaker 4: You're like, Kevin, I need to tell you something thing.
00:02:00
Speaker 2: Maybe it was like there was a humbleness of like, I don't need you to tell me that I'm really good.
00:02:05
Speaker 4: You were seriously you were in the club? Was it two games ago?
00:02:07
Speaker 2: Yeah, the first segment against the Brewers where they put up eleven.
00:02:11
Speaker 1: I have a real question, use like, what did you do when you were in there? Did you, like, were you in any of the scrums you're just observing? Were you like around when Machada spoke or Tatis or.
00:02:20
Speaker 5: In every scrum just like you were just listening.
00:02:22
Speaker 4: Okay, that's what I was wondering.
00:02:24
Speaker 1: And Kevin, you're saying, kind of took the lead in some of the oh yeah conversations.
00:02:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's always like one like there's I mean, sometimes it's more it could be more partnership related. So when I was up in La Laker games, Mike Trudell Spectrum Sports Net, like he's going to get the first question because Spectrum carries the games. So that's how typically, but this obviously in San Diego, what are you going to have?
00:02:48
Speaker 5: I mean, here's the question. I have a local.
00:02:51
Speaker 4: You know, Kevin is not scared.
00:02:53
Speaker 1: If you've heard his interactions as you have over the years, like whole ask questions that don't always get like. It's not always ra rob right, he's a beat reporter, so it'll be hey, Manny, you know you've struggled for the last thirty games.
00:03:02
Speaker 5: Why he's being honest.
00:03:04
Speaker 1: I feel as if now when you when you cover Lakers in your career, do you typically ask questions of the head coach of the players or no because you're you're doing a show around it, or you.
00:03:14
Speaker 5: Sometimes just typically yes, but pre so, if you.
00:03:17
Speaker 1: Ever asked anything like against the grain or is it normally just kind of a like kind of throw it up there relatively softly.
00:03:25
Speaker 2: I think we'll have an angle to it. But I'm also not I think respectful. Yeah, I think just like personality wise, I'm not like coming in hot. Yeah I'm not coming in hot. Okay, that's not going to be stylistic.
00:03:39
Speaker 4: I could actually see you.
00:03:40
Speaker 1: Like getting into the Padres clubhouse and like asking real questions, I guess is my point.
00:03:45
Speaker 5: No, And here's the thing.
00:03:46
Speaker 2: You can you can get great questions that allows somebody to expand on a topic that doesn't have to be like a personal not personal, but.
00:03:57
Speaker 5: You know what I mean.
00:03:58
Speaker 2: Certain guys take things personal. Other pe people take nothing personally right now, it's completely so Manny's one that And I've never interviewed Manny.
00:04:05
Speaker 5: Manny, I can't.
00:04:06
Speaker 2: I don't know if i'd understand if like Manny, it almost feels like he's defensive before the questions even asked where Tatis in my brief interaction or just listening, you know, listen to.
00:04:19
Speaker 5: That that was cool?
00:04:20
Speaker 2: That cool as hell.
00:04:21
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:04:21
Speaker 1: Just I feel like if I was one like they was interacting in the clubhouse and I don't because of a this job and be like the wrap up show, I feel like I'm the guy that would spend like six weeks being like Machado has been awful, and then I go in the club I was like, Manny, You've been terrific. Man It's it's been an absolute joy to watch your play.
00:04:37
Speaker 4: You're one of my fas. I just love the way you're playing right now.
00:04:41
Speaker 2: I saw I saw something today. Do you guys remember this? You know, Russell Westbrook retired yesterday, right long career.
00:04:47
Speaker 5: Do you guys remember this.
00:04:48
Speaker 2: Past season that exchange he had in the lock in the in the pressure.
00:04:53
Speaker 5: For the Sacramento Kings. Do you know what I'm talking about?
00:04:55
Speaker 6: You?
00:04:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, there was this, Well, yeah, I guess I guess somebody was writing something and this what you just said about like everything's fine, somebody somebody was very critical print and then went into print podcasting, you know, like whatever now in person and it's the it's one of the interviews where you're not in a scrum. It's just it's almost like Craig's Stammon talking and he's up on a podium and you got the reporters. That's the setting for Russell Westbrook. So it wasn't in the locker room locked too. And I guess this guy had been critical, not just their play, but I think there was you know, questions about do these guys care?
00:05:37
Speaker 4: Interesting?
00:05:38
Speaker 5: So interesting, a little more personal. So Russ, we gotta find this. Well, we'll we'll find it.
00:05:42
Speaker 2: But so Russ basically like called out all of the media. He's just like, you know, you guys have been uh, you guys have been going after us in this and somebod these reports where you guys getting your where the source?
00:05:56
Speaker 5: Where you getting the source? And the one guy kind.
00:05:58
Speaker 2: Of dried and voicing up, and he's like he kind of almost said kind of like especially you.
00:06:03
Speaker 5: He was telling him the dude's voice. I I thought, so wow, it was cracking like crazy.
00:06:08
Speaker 2: The guy asked, oh no, he was trying to defend himself. I mean the voice is just crackling, and it was this, I'm like this, poor guy.
00:06:17
Speaker 1: Well, it's easier said than done to be in that setting and ask that stuff can be intimidating.
00:06:22
Speaker 2: Absolutely, but sometimes it's not even just like the player you're interviewing.
00:06:27
Speaker 5: It's like, hey, there are TV cameras picking up.
00:06:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, there are other you know, peers around you that are also looking at like, what's the question you're gonna ask?
00:06:35
Speaker 5: I've got a little pressure behind it.
00:06:36
Speaker 4: Do you see this?
00:06:38
Speaker 1: Allen and again Kevin Aci will join us at three thirty. Do you see this as a trap? This series? The Padres are fifteen and five in their last twenty games, one of the hottest teams since they also break mean, while Cleveland's been the exact opposite, five and fifteen in his last twenty games. Someimes still hanging around for an AL wild card spot.
00:06:54
Speaker 5: Would you say the game and a half.
00:06:56
Speaker 1: And they are four games under five hundred, one and a half games out?
00:06:59
Speaker 4: Is this a trap?
00:07:00
Speaker 1: Or is this just the Padres taking out a team that's really struggling and the Padres should take advantage of it.
00:07:05
Speaker 5: Is it a trap?
00:07:06
Speaker 2: First off, I think we all agree with this that all sports should go by. If you're below five hundred, you can't get in the playoffs. Yes, you just can't get in the postseason if you're below five. If you're in the NBA and you're below five hundred.
00:07:19
Speaker 1: Would you take as in I had seven over five five. I like that to take that seven team and slot them over.
00:07:27
Speaker 2: But that is gonna be Yeah, that way you don't lose any games, revenue, all that stuff.
00:07:31
Speaker 5: I like that better. By the way, in the West, why would.
00:07:35
Speaker 1: I'm just saying there's enough teams to make that everyone makes the playoffs.
00:07:38
Speaker 2: What in the sense of like you're not getting in the playing tournament, but another team from the West is getting in.
00:07:43
Speaker 5: I kind of like it.
00:07:43
Speaker 7: I like that.
00:07:44
Speaker 5: That's a good idea. Do I think this is a trap?
00:07:47
Speaker 2: I think anytime you're probably feeling great about yourself yep, and you know on the other side the other team struggling, I think you can kind of fall into that. You had the day off yesterday, you're coming off asleep against the Milwaukee Brewers. I think it's natural to kind of walk into a situation where you're just feeling really good about yourself and then you know it could just not go as planned, or you give up a couple runs early that you weren't expecting, or maybe you're playing sloppy baseball.
00:08:15
Speaker 5: Yeah, I could.
00:08:17
Speaker 2: See how they can get Lord into that.
00:08:20
Speaker 1: I think sports has a lot of this. Now, give you an example from the team the Padres just played. As you mentioned the Brewers, there was a lot of attention on Brewers Dodgers. It was playing out during the Padre series. Oh, the Brewers are playing the Dodgers this week. These are the two best teams in the National League. They didn't get Scooba. I'm talking about Milwaukee. LA did go and the Brewers come here and they lose three games. Then they go to LA and they win last night, and they do it in kind of remarkable fashion, honestly against Edwin Diez again. He blows another safe, his third of the week, and the Brewers win.
00:08:48
Speaker 5: They came full three in a week.
00:08:49
Speaker 1: In a week three and I think six games, I'll get his jersey and then I know you're not gonna where that's a bad guy, and I want to say Roberts said, hey, is you going to still be closing for you.
00:08:59
Speaker 4: Said any other idea?
00:09:00
Speaker 5: Yeah?
00:09:01
Speaker 4: Who else am I gonna throw? Which is interesting?
00:09:03
Speaker 2: I don't know one of your fourteen starters.
00:09:05
Speaker 4: Good point.
00:09:06
Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's the humanistic part of sports, where it's like, Okay, was Milwaukee looking at La Not that San Diego is not good? No, but that's an excell san Diego is playing really well.
00:09:16
Speaker 4: Are you looking past.
00:09:17
Speaker 2: Anyone that could be kind of the trap? And here's the I'll use We'll use the Guardians as an example. The Guardians, like.
00:09:23
Speaker 5: You said, they're game and a half outside of.
00:09:24
Speaker 2: The playoffs, so I wherever however they're playing, their fans showing up today saying we're a game and a half out.
00:09:32
Speaker 5: Serious, you could still find yourself whether you like it or not.
00:09:35
Speaker 2: I mean, you and I sit here and we talk so much about the just get in and anything can happen. They got a month and a half to try to right their wrongs and potentially get into a postseason spot. And I like the cop of the Brewers because you and I were talking about this yesterday. I'm like, I was wildly unimpressed with the Milwaukee Brewers.
00:09:53
Speaker 5: That's the team that's thirty games over five hundred.
00:09:56
Speaker 2: That's the team that's supposed to be, on paper, the best team in baseball.
00:09:59
Speaker 5: I ain't the best the best team. They could have easily overlooked the Padres.
00:10:02
Speaker 2: Absolutely, they could have by the ask good point.
00:10:04
Speaker 4: So we'll see again.
00:10:05
Speaker 1: This is a six game roacher if you think about the teams are playing Cleveland Yas the game and a half out of five and fifteen in their last twenty and then the New York Mets, one of the most disappointing teams of the sport. Yeah, is the next series for the Padres, So that'll get underway. Coming up later today at four thirty. Kevin Acy will join us. Coming up in about fifteen minutes. He wrote a really fascinating piece on Steven suz A Junior, the turnaround of the offense. Does Susan get the credit? He got a lot of to blame, didn't he the first sixty or seventy games of the year. 00:12:13
Speaker 4: We we.
00:12:14
Speaker 1: He just shared with me Brent. Like the Russell Westbrook back and forth with the media. It's maybe a little we were talking about earlier, but it's pretty fascinating good. It was really fats Basically, it was really really well done by guy.
00:12:27
Speaker 2: When you're like Machado or something called you out, you would just churn it up.
00:12:31
Speaker 1: Who as you're talking to Yeah, like Westbrook literally calls out of reporters, what about you to say?
00:12:35
Speaker 5: What about you?
00:12:35
Speaker 3: To say?
00:12:36
Speaker 4: On social media?
00:12:37
Speaker 2: You know?
00:12:37
Speaker 1: And I can imagine that happening to me, But you talk to me turning left and right. Listen to this quote from Steven Susan Junior to Kevin A. C. It's in Today's Union Tribune and Kevin Oll Jonas and Temana.
00:12:49
Speaker 2: You would change your name in that situation, like miked my bike.
00:12:53
Speaker 4: My voice would gets so high, I'd like Mickey Mouse.
00:12:57
Speaker 1: Dude, if you called me out again, it's easy to it's easy to dish it out. We've made this point. It's not the easiest thing, by the way, in the world. Always to be a professional athlete. Ever was like, that makes so much money. Yeah, okay, it's true. They do make a lot of money, but that doesn't mean everything is perfect.
00:13:12
Speaker 4: Take a lot of money, it's nice.
00:13:13
Speaker 5: Always take my chances.
00:13:20
Speaker 1: Do you agree in this with the general sentiment of like money doesn't buy happiness?
00:13:25
Speaker 5: Absolutely? I think so.
00:13:26
Speaker 2: I'll take my chances, you know, But of course it doesn't buy anything. But these athletes, it's like they're it's they're expected to be.
00:13:37
Speaker 5: I don't know perfect is the right way to put it.
00:13:38
Speaker 2: But you almost like you're not allowed to sympathize with it athlete because they make they make.
00:13:42
Speaker 7: A lot of money.
00:13:43
Speaker 5: Obviously that's exactly so.
00:13:45
Speaker 1: Stephen Susan today in the U t to Kevin i Sey.
00:13:47
Speaker 4: Says, I don't have any motives.
00:13:48
Speaker 1: He's the first year hitting coach, right, But the Padres terrible start, great last month.
00:13:53
Speaker 4: Plus he says, I don't have any motives.
00:13:54
Speaker 1: I don't care about anything else other than watching those guys succeed. And I think they know that. And then listen to this word.
00:14:00
Speaker 10: Yeah.
00:14:01
Speaker 1: Now, so it was a little and if you read the article, it's very it's a very lengthy piece. There's tons of quotes from all types of players, Jackson, Meryl, Fernando Tuttis Junior and others.
00:14:11
Speaker 4: Craig Stammond as well.
00:14:12
Speaker 1: I think it's been contentious, dude, and I think it makes sense if you've watched the season like you and I have, and our listeners as well. I don't think it's been a straight line. I think there's been a lot of ups and downs and finally they're kind of reaping some of these rewards we gave him.
00:14:25
Speaker 4: I gave him a lot of blame.
00:14:27
Speaker 1: Does he get now the credit for the way they're performing.
00:14:31
Speaker 5: I mean, look, there's a couple different ways to look at it.
00:14:35
Speaker 2: I do think that quote is interesting about the what'd you say at the end there that they basically they get now or.
00:14:42
Speaker 3: Something like that.
00:14:42
Speaker 1: I think they know that now that he only cares about whether they succeed or not.
00:14:47
Speaker 4: I think they know that.
00:14:48
Speaker 2: Now, I would say this, Why were we critical about Steven Susan Junior. It's the same way we could be critical about Craig Stanman.
00:14:58
Speaker 5: It's like, you guys don't have any experience at this.
00:15:02
Speaker 2: So if the team's not playing well, where am I naturally gonna go to Craig's stammon? It's like, well, he's never done this before. If Steven Susan Junior, if the offense is the worst offense in all of baseball, do you want me to say, you know what, this has nothing to do with the hitting coach Steven Susan Junior is fine, No, I'm gonna say, I'm gonna try to tie is the reason why the Padres have the worst offense in all in baseball and we have a hitting coach that's never been a hitting coach before.
00:15:33
Speaker 5: In Major League Baseball.
00:15:35
Speaker 2: I think it's a fair I think it's a tie the two together now as we sit here today. Ookay, I got no problem giving Steven sus a credit. But I think I'd rather just say, like, the offense is doing well, they're much better than they were. It's gonna give them a chance to potentially make the playoffs because without an offense or without these main players that you can rely on, do I also have to run to steven Susa junior and say, hey, this guy saved us.
00:16:04
Speaker 5: I don't have to do that.
00:16:05
Speaker 4: I think I agree with you.
00:16:07
Speaker 2: You handle your job because that's your job.
00:16:09
Speaker 5: And if the offense is.
00:16:11
Speaker 2: Doing well, nobody needs to know the hitting coach's name, like nobody needs to be walking around.
00:16:15
Speaker 5: I don't see any jerseys out there, I says steven sus A junior.
00:16:18
Speaker 2: Right, the players typically get the credit, and right now their offense is doing well, then he.
00:16:23
Speaker 5: Deserves some credit as well. But I also don't.
00:16:26
Speaker 2: Think we have to go out of our way to to praise a hitting coach. He's not Reubyn diebl who's been here for a while and it's like I've seen this year after year.
00:16:34
Speaker 5: You can create that over time.
00:16:36
Speaker 4: You know what's weird to me about and tell me if you agree with this.
00:16:38
Speaker 1: What's weird about hitting coaches is they've come and gone, specifically in San Diego, so often. Yeah, oftentimes we like to tie them to the overall success or failure of a lineup, where I'm like, hold on your one year hitting coach has to do with Fernando Tatis junior success. But you're paying them three hundred and forty million dollars a year. So Tatisa has this lengthy deal where you're basically saying, hey, he's a pre eminent flugger in the best players in baseball. He's gonna be able to produce regardless, he's going to have like Toddy could have, how many hitting coaches in his career?
00:17:08
Speaker 4: A ton, right, like seven eight nine. I don't even know the number.
00:17:11
Speaker 1: Machado's my head seven eight nine already. But we're going to tie the success or failure of the players to the coaches that come and go.
00:17:19
Speaker 4: So I don't really know what to make of it.
00:17:21
Speaker 1: I tend to want to give more of the credits to Fernando Tozzis junior when he's hitting the way he's been hitting recently, and I tend to want to give him more of the blame, but he's not hitting well. I don't want to just be like, hey, the three hundred forty million dollar man isn't playing well because of stevensus A junior. Like I know, I think it's more on the three hundred forty million.
00:17:36
Speaker 2: Dollar man, I think you are right about that. But like I said, there were very natural reasons.
00:17:42
Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, no, I and I did it, like yeah, but we.
00:17:46
Speaker 2: Had a reason to again, like let's give people credit and credits due. And if Kevin Acey is going this far out of his way to write an entire piece, by the way, very smart, Like that's a that's a great to have, that's a great Hey the offense turned around, what changed? Hey, let me go, let me go talk to all these players and figure out, you know, from their perspective, it's obviously a smart piece to have.
00:18:10
Speaker 1: So Kevin ol Jonas coming up at three thirty. I mean it's interesting because also the hitting coaches here, like under Preller, I don't have them in front of me. I don't think anyone's lasted more than two years. And even the way this offense is performing right now, I have no idea what to expect, Like Steven Seuss a lot to return because they've had a good thirty five days to the last thirty five days, are they an indicator for the next thirty five days? Talking about a little bit of this trap like is this who they are or is the team we saw the first eighty games. Who they are or are they somewhere in between? That's the It's a very humbling sport. Just because they've been so good for the last thirty forty games. I hope it continues. But what we're saying today about Steven Seussa, does that change? I know if they don't continue to play like this movie.
00:18:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, we were talking yesterday and we're talking to Andy Helman joined us and we're talking about what you want to see from new ownership, right what I'd like to see. I mean, just can we can we make sure we're making the right hires and have.
00:19:05
Speaker 5: A little bit more.
00:19:07
Speaker 2: Consistency like the just the turnover continuity.
00:19:13
Speaker 5: Turnover to me, you tell me.
00:19:15
Speaker 2: But I think in most businesses anywhere you have a lot of turnover, that's a bad sign.
00:19:20
Speaker 5: That's a bad sign.
00:19:20
Speaker 2: Now they haven't had turnover with aj Preller, but AJ Preller is like recycling, whether it's managers, hitting coaches, whatever, the case is not, in my opinion, not the best look.
00:19:30
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's a fair point.
00:19:31
Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of criticism in general of the regime because of the turnover within the organization. All right, Kevin Acier Padres Insider more on his feature on Stephen Susan Junior, plus more on the series that gets underway in about an hour between the Padres and the Guardians in Cleveland. Speaker 3: The Pdreys Report with Kevin Acy.
00:21:10
Speaker 12: He's brought to you by Hamoul Casino Resort A Players. This is all yours, Hamul Casino Resort A Players Place.
00:21:21
Speaker 1: All right, Kevin, you know the problem real quick.
00:21:23
Speaker 4: Kevin Acy's back with us. He's with us basically every day.
00:21:26
Speaker 1: Alan and I were just like we were just laughing at the break. And my issue is when I start laughing about something, it's very hard for me to like get it back on the rails. But I feel like I've actually gotten it back on the rails. So anyway, thank you for joining us once again here today after joining us twenty four hours ago.
00:21:43
Speaker 6: My pleasure, Thank you for having me. I'm just I'm humbled by the honor.
00:21:48
Speaker 1: John Allen, Oh good, all right, Well, I'm sure you've gotten a lot of reaction to your article. Really interesting article on Steven suss junior right and the Pajas first year hitting coach and the way this all sis has kind of reinvented itself as the season has gone on, specifically the way they've played here recently. So he got a lot of blame obviously earlier in the season. Does he now deserve the credit for the way this aw sense has turned their season round over the last month or so.
00:22:15
Speaker 6: He deserved less blame than he got, He deserved less credit. Well, I can't say that because he's not really getting credit because it's always the hitters that do well right, and it's.
00:22:23
Speaker 7: Hitting coach who does poorly.
00:22:25
Speaker 6: Look like, I thought that the interesting part of the whole thing, and I do agree, it was a very interesting story, but the interesting part of the whole thing. A lot of good goals from players, but Steven Susan junior acknowledging the ways in which he needed to improve. Now, that doesn't mean it was his fault. It means that he was the first yer hitting coach. It means that every first year hitting coach, even if he'd been in this league for twenty years, and he comes to a team like the Ponders with established players, good players, like you got to learn your guys, he here, guys got to learn.
00:22:53
Speaker 7: You, Kevin.
00:22:55
Speaker 2: I think one of the more interesting pieces is that maybe he was giving the hitters too much information. Can can you just get into that piece of it? And if there was some you know, players that agreed with that or interacted on that portion of the piece, well.
00:23:10
Speaker 7: Yeah, they're almost all of them. And it's interesting because the way it was being presented to me. I think we talked about this so like back.
00:23:17
Speaker 6: In April May, especially in mid May, I was kind of looking into this, investigating this, talking with players, people around the players, people in the organization.
00:23:27
Speaker 7: And I guess I was interpreting it that like they.
00:23:29
Speaker 6: Weren't getting the proper information. I was interpreting it slightly different than oh, like too much information, and and that is like giving them everything like he's a genius.
00:23:42
Speaker 7: He's a hitting.
00:23:43
Speaker 6: Genius, right, A lot of guys who didn't end up being able to do it very well, I mean.
00:23:48
Speaker 7: In the Major League who still means he was one.
00:23:49
Speaker 6: Of the top one percent of hitters to ever live that you know, they had no hitting though and and he was giving them every possible way to attack a picture.
00:23:59
Speaker 7: Here's what this does. Hear it in every situation.
00:24:01
Speaker 6: And just think about the volume of information and then think about how that's so much more than they've ever had. And that was in line with what Droller and A. J. Pller and Craig Stanmon we're looking for. But it just needed to be refined. I mean, there's guys in this team that just want to like, you know, know a couple of things, have some fling thoughts and go up there. And that's how they've always done it. If you talk to Manny Machado, like first off, remember his rant that went quasi viral a little while ago.
00:24:30
Speaker 7: Maybe he just wants to, you know, go up there.
00:24:32
Speaker 6: And hit like that's it. Like, you know, maybe he's extremely smart. He knows when he has an idea, when certain pitches are coming, counts, all that stuff. He wants a little bit of that, but like he doesn't want to be bump parted with information and so, uh, I just thought that it was cool that people were forthcoming about that. And you know, look, they're doing they're doing well. He also he did have something to do with Jackson Merrill bringing his hands out from his you know, from his body less movement at the start of his you know, the whole process of hitting. And so when Matt Jackson talks about going back to high school, that's just.
00:25:10
Speaker 7: Way too simplified.
00:25:11
Speaker 6: Man, Yes, he went back to being who he is, but like that's an adjustment.
00:25:15
Speaker 7: And and it's like Andy.
00:25:18
Speaker 6: Steven SUSA and Paddos Sullivan had big time to do with that. Mike McCoy works a lot with Freddie Fermen. So these hitting coaches do have like they make a difference. But like, come on, like you know these guys, these guys are some of the best hitters in the league. There's at least two of them on the team, three of them on the team that are like, come on, are we really going to season Suso for this.
00:25:42
Speaker 1: It's interesting you said that, Kevin ass Or Padre's insider as you know better than most. They've had so much churn in coaching. Not just man it is, but they've had so much churn. You know, Victor rodriguezick around for two years. One year they were really good offense. One year they weren't a great offense. Yeah, Victor Rodriguez was their hitting coach for both of those years.
00:26:01
Speaker 4: I guess based on.
00:26:01
Speaker 1: Where we are right now and knowing all about their their turn under A J. Preller, so to speak, would you expect Steven Susan Junior to be back next year under Craig Damn?
00:26:11
Speaker 6: I would, But I can never guarantee that. Can't like about because of that, Like, I mean, I think Manny's had seven if you count interims.
00:26:18
Speaker 7: Seven head hitting coaches. He's been here eight seasons, right, Like, so I can't ever guarantee that.
00:26:26
Speaker 6: You never know, but it does seem that he they've reached a real good working relationship. A J thinks you realize, like Victor, there were great points about Victor obviously, and now he's in Houston, things are going well. And you know they've got good hitters too.
00:26:43
Speaker 7: I don't think he, you know, unlocked.
00:26:45
Speaker 6: Anything with Jordan Alvarez. I don't know that, but like you know, you got good hitters, like Victor was good. Yet another year on his contract, you know, A J. Prowlers thought it was better to keep McCoy in Sullivan than to keep Victor was allowed to leave, and so you just you don't ever know, but I do think first off, he was Craig Stamon's tiger.
00:27:07
Speaker 7: He was, and for that reason and the.
00:27:10
Speaker 6: Fact that they've come to this good working relationship, I would expect him City Pack.
00:27:17
Speaker 2: Kevin Acyr Padres Insider joining us Shapeer and Sleeva show Kevin been playing such great ball fifteen and five in their last twenty I think Cleveland five and fifteen in their last twenty games.
00:27:30
Speaker 5: Do you how much do you worry about?
00:27:32
Speaker 2: Just kind of it's like they're here, they are they're finally past Arizona and Philly for a second, you get the day off, you worry at all? They take their foot off the gas. I mean, it's just kind of it's a natural thing. I'm not telling you, But is that something that you feel like because the opponent coming up and how great they've been playing, someone to worry about over this next three game set.
00:27:54
Speaker 6: See, that is a natural thing to worry about. It is I can't say, like, I wouldn't say I'm worried about it, or it would be the top worry, you know, but like it's real, Like.
00:28:06
Speaker 7: And also someone said this team has like.
00:28:08
Speaker 6: A history of it, right, so you hope that that means that they won't do it, and.
00:28:13
Speaker 7: They also have a history of not doing it.
00:28:14
Speaker 6: I mean, it's just like we remember times when it's like, how in the world did.
00:28:18
Speaker 7: You just drop two or three to the Rockies when you've just been on fire lately.
00:28:22
Speaker 6: It's happened, right, I think maybe it happened last year late in the season.
00:28:26
Speaker 7: I can't remember.
00:28:27
Speaker 6: I'm probably wrong, but like it happens. And it's like, when do you play a team well, right now, they're playing a Guardians team that's not like doing well lately, right and so, and their record is in they're an American league and the record is sub five hundred, and like I haven't really looked at them, not closely, to be honest, but like, I don't know what's going on with them, but you would expect the Potter are going to come in here or need to come here and.
00:28:50
Speaker 7: Win this series.
00:28:51
Speaker 6: I mean, that's where the Potters are at. And it's funny they haven't really this late in the season even in twenty four by then, right, like you felt like, oh the Seams side of the playoffs last year, Okay, you know, both those years, I think they clinched in the last eight to ten days, but just felt like they were on their way right.
00:29:08
Speaker 7: This is the first year where they've.
00:29:10
Speaker 6: Really had to like they're they're in a dogfighte right now, and and so I wouldn't expect it happens, but.
00:29:16
Speaker 7: It's a legit concern.
00:29:18
Speaker 1: Kevin Acis or Padres insider Michael Kay. I didn't know what to expect with King Honesty this year with all the you know, the the Ofwes time at the time last.
00:29:26
Speaker 4: Year with the injury.
00:29:27
Speaker 1: But he's really put together a solid overall season. Has his overall body of work been surprising based on what he went through last year?
00:29:38
Speaker 6: Only only once I got the spring and talked and felt like I would say no, but I mean totally legit to say that, because there was an unknown what about the Indians count right, Like I mean, even though he made a jump before, it wasn't from whatever it was last.
00:29:54
Speaker 7: Year, like seventy or something like that, seventy five, so like huge jump, but like knowing.
00:30:01
Speaker 6: Him, knowing what Ruben's able to do with those types of pictures and and and what I should say what Rubin has learned about that and been able to help manage those types of pictures. I felt pretty.
00:30:14
Speaker 7: Comfortable as a matter of fact, Like there's time this year I was like, dude, this guy.
00:30:17
Speaker 6: Should be better. But you are so spot on about like the body of work. I mean, he's just see for a while, the only guy you could have confidence in. That didn't mean that he did it every time, but like he still has. He's still that guy that has the ability to show up every time he goes out there, and you know, and he is I forget I've lost track in the flow thies now in the era, Like I mean, he's their guy with whatever it is, twelve quality stars, six and zero six and one whatever, Like the guy is, that's what you expect out of him every week.
00:30:50
Speaker 2: Kevin After after Michael King, who do you think is the most reliable starter? After King? I know the dust is still kind of starting to settle here. And yeah, the addition to Casey Miz and obviously Robbie Ray, who'd you have most confidence in?
00:31:06
Speaker 5: After King?
00:31:08
Speaker 6: Well, at the day of the trade, knowing what Robbie Ray had done for nine starts, that would have been my vote right when I watched him here twice and you go, oh, so this is what it looks like when Robbie Ray doesn't get out of jams because he's a big you know, walks and hits and all that he gives up and he just hasn't gotten out of him as well with the Padres. And so basically what I saw last time, I'm going to go with Casey Miz Like he pitched like brilliantly.
00:31:34
Speaker 7: He really did.
00:31:35
Speaker 6: He had a walk and a bad pitch, maybe a couple bad pitches, and then I think gave up one other hit like that, the home run.
00:31:42
Speaker 7: The double terrible pitches.
00:31:44
Speaker 6: Other than that, the guy was like brilliant And if you look at his body of work for the most part over the whatever it is now eighteen starts, I'd go with him. And that's weird because I've seen both of them pitch you twice, So that kind of tolls you the state of the Padres rotation, doesn't it.
00:32:00
Speaker 1: That's a good point where you guys are out on that.
00:32:02
Speaker 6: You could make a point about Walker Buehler, but like he's living on the edge every time.
00:32:07
Speaker 5: Right, Like, I don't know, I think you're right on myz.
00:32:10
Speaker 2: And again, this is just it's such a short sample size of what they've done in San Diego. And I think you're right about you know, on Robbie Ray, it's like we got to see some more starts from him. Casey mys was like, like you mentioned this phenomenal gets Milwaukee, so by lean towards that.
00:32:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, but it does feel as if, and correct me if if I'm wrong here, it does feel like they've they've shored up their biggest area of need you know what.
00:32:33
Speaker 4: I even if it has been perfect, it had to be addressed.
00:32:36
Speaker 1: And now that it has been addressed, it feels like automatically that's a big defintive.
00:32:41
Speaker 7: Oh.
00:32:42
Speaker 6: Absolutely, and both the results should be better and kind of have been. Yeah, I mean at least I guess Casey meis and Robbie Ray wasn't you know a terrible last time. He would have gone five. He can't just go on the back that he went four. He would have gone five. If they're up five nothing or something like that, he would have gone five. And that's where happened sometimes. And they've got this bullpen behind them with a day off the next day, so so and just the confidence these guys have they were feeling it maybe not as dire because fans tend to go off the rails right.
00:33:15
Speaker 7: Like it's the worst thing ever.
00:33:18
Speaker 6: But they were feeling the same thing. Fans were, oh my gosh, it's too there on the first crap, you know, like, oh man, and they're the guys who got to go up there and make up that to run deficit and then keep scoring more because the runs that they felt so like, the confidence that it gave the team is it can't like it really is important.
00:33:39
Speaker 7: It really, it really is.
00:33:41
Speaker 4: Kevin, always appreciate it.
00:33:42
Speaker 1: We won't call you tomorrow probably, but thanks for doing it here today.
00:33:46
Speaker 7: Right on Talk to London A.
00:33:49
Speaker 12: Podrey's report with Kevin Acy is brought to you by Hamoul Casino Resort. Hey, players, this is all yours, Hamul Casino Resort, the players play.

Speaker 5: Alright.
00:34:23
Speaker 2: SCFC is back on the road tomorrow when they take on lafc Our Coverage with Adrian and Darren begins at seven pm on your home for SCFC San Diego Sports seven sixty.
00:34:35
Speaker 5: Darren will join us at five o'clock to break that game down.
00:34:38
Speaker 4: All you know the saying, if Mandy goes, the team goes.
00:34:42
Speaker 2: Pashata many it's not really crazy about that saying, But you know the saying, I know the saying, I guess I just don't really agree with the.
00:34:49
Speaker 5: Saying in do I have us right?
00:34:53
Speaker 1: He's hitting two hundred this month. Yeah, he's been struggling and the Padres, but it proves the point that it's not always as simple as the saying. I mean, the Padres are playing some of the better baseball in the sport. Machado, you know, it hasn't been object failure, but he hasn't necessarily carried them either. That's where the Meryl conversation has played a significant role. Fernando Tazzis Junior has played well for the last couple of months, but it is overly simplastic, obviously to say that Manny Machado's offense is the reason why the Padres will play good baseball, or if he doesn't hit, they're not going to play well. That hasn't really played out throughout the course of twenty twenty six.
00:35:29
Speaker 5: Truthfully, Yeah, I just it's tough.
00:35:31
Speaker 2: I don't think I think there's you know, certain sports where I can be like, yeah, that one.
00:35:35
Speaker 5: Player can carry you.
00:35:37
Speaker 2: I think in baseball it's just such a it's such a different it's such a different.
00:35:43
Speaker 5: Sports just too.
00:35:44
Speaker 2: You've got you got so many factors that.
00:35:45
Speaker 5: Go into winning a baseball game.
00:35:47
Speaker 2: And don't get me wrong, if Machado's balling out, then the Podres are a different team. But what if Jackson Merrill's balling out? What if Tatis is balling out? If I mean if if you don't have the contributions that you're getting right now, Machado can go off on his own, doesn't It doesn't mean that the Padres everyone will follow. I almost would rather see what we're seeing today, where I think we had a question about this a while back. It's like there was a moment a couple of weeks ago where I think Merril was getting hot and Tatis was playing good.
00:36:17
Speaker 5: I think we were trying to make the argument.
00:36:19
Speaker 2: Which who's it more important to see get going? And I think we both agree that we'd rather see Jackson Merrill because we felt like Tatis would you know, he was just going to become Tatis Merril. It's been a little bit different of a story. So they need much more than just Machada.
00:36:36
Speaker 1: Remember a year ago where Machada really struggled in the second half of the year. They couldn't give him a blow because they needed to get into the postseason or you know, because all the games are important, you're trying to be a higher seed or you're trying to get in.
00:36:47
Speaker 2: And I think he also didn't want days off.
00:36:49
Speaker 4: He didn't.
00:36:49
Speaker 1: But remember this year, one of the talking points in Freeric was, Hey, we're going to give him a blow more often. Well, guess what his last off day was July eighth. So now there's been an all star breaking there. But he's played for the better part of the last month each and every game.
00:37:05
Speaker 5: Obviously.
00:37:07
Speaker 1: Well sure, do you feel as if the time has come and they played well as the time come where they could afford to maybe give him a day for the better man?
00:37:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, especially because he's not it's not like he's bawling out like the Tatis.
00:37:17
Speaker 4: Yeah, Tatis got a day the other day.
00:37:19
Speaker 2: Tatists had a day off, and everyone was like not now, right, Like, that's not when he's playing as good as he is.
00:37:25
Speaker 5: Not when you're playing the Milwaukee Brewers a chance to sweep him.
00:37:28
Speaker 2: Not because every single game that you play there's pressure right behind you because of Arizona and Philadelphia. But I think Machado it's a little different. If he is struggling, I'm more apt to say give him a day off than the guy who's on fire. Like you know this, like anything that you're doing when if you're doing something really really well, the last thing you want is just to stop that momentum. Right, true, so I think, But when things aren't going good, it's probably nice to be like, you know, I'm just gonna take a day off. Everything is just going awful, I just take a day off, refresh, and then it probably works to your benefit. I'd be open to get many a little bit of time on.
00:38:06
Speaker 1: It's almost that's why it's almost surprising to me that Tatiska a day. Yeah, you know, Tatis, your twenty seven year old outfield or sure opposed to your you know, mid thirty something Machada who's playing each and every day.
00:38:16
Speaker 2: The only thing is, I know Machado's had quotes out there like there's a little bit of like there's an old school of you got to play every day.
00:38:24
Speaker 5: But I don't know if that, if that, you know, works to his benefit at this point.
00:38:28
Speaker 4: No, I'm with you now.
00:38:29
Speaker 1: The good thing is, again, the team's played well. I think it's a different conversation if this seems just kind of like struggling a long and Machado's struggling, like, dude, manny, like sometimes more isn't better, you know, it's like you want quality over quantity. Everyone understands that, Machada, You're one hundred percent right. All the dude does is quote unquote post right one hundred and fifty nine, one hundred and sixty games. There's a reason why he's likely to get to three thousand hits. You want to know why because he plays every day. There's a reason why he might get to five hundred home runs. Why because he takes no days of aff So yes, it's a credit to him. But I am now thinking about like I want to see Machado effective late in the year and hopefully in the postseason, and you have to at least be thinking more about that as this player ages. It was a big talking point in the offseason. He's now thirty four years of age. It's one thing to talk about it, it's another thing to do it. And here we are again where they're not necessarily doing it.
00:39:20
Speaker 5: Yeah, that I can be more sold on.
00:39:23
Speaker 2: Like the end of the season, you do need your money guys to step up postseason, of course, you need your money guys to step up.
00:39:32
Speaker 5: And we see it a lot.
00:39:32
Speaker 2: I mean, I've watched I mean as much baseball as you watch. You give me the biggest names in all of baseball. There's plenty of postseasons where those guys in it come through. There's plenty of postseasons where those guys are you know, getting sacrificed or you know, obviously from a media perspective, everyone's very critical about them. But typically when you watch a team go on a real run, their stars are a part of it.
00:39:56
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:39:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, of course you're gonna have other guys step up in that process. But whatever you can do to get many.
00:40:04
Speaker 5: At least being a.
00:40:05
Speaker 2: Better version of the best version of himself this year, Like this year, because I know this year is different than plenty other years. The power still there, but nothing else is.
00:40:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, now, he did have and you've mentioned before, he did have that game to home run last year in Chicago in that series loss to the Cups. I just would make this point as well about Machado and where he is in his career, because he's had the power this year.
00:40:23
Speaker 4: Right, we've talked about.
00:40:25
Speaker 1: But he's got a point six war this year wins above replacement. He had a four point two last year. He's trending it probably under a one war season.
00:40:34
Speaker 4: So he's been jeez, it's.
00:40:36
Speaker 1: Been basically the worst that's really bad season of not basically, it's been the worst full season of his career, and it's really not close. He's in the midst of the worst full season of his career, and remarkably, the podcasts might overcome that actually this year.
00:40:49
Speaker 2: Hypothetically, if you were in the if you were in the clubhouse.
00:40:54
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, if you just said.
00:40:55
Speaker 2: This, after you just said this, and if he calls you out, what would you say.
00:40:58
Speaker 1: I'd be like, No, if yeah, Alan said that, you probably voice sounds someone and then you know what I.
00:41:03
Speaker 2: Would say, that's brit would say that was our as our producer, man that guy.
00:41:09
Speaker 1: The one thing I will say this, tell me if this is serious, that's hilarious. Like the things we say on air, I think are always fair. It might be critical, by the way, we never came back from break by the way, oh on YouTube, my bad, but like.
00:41:26
Speaker 2: And we're going to break in about thirty second.
00:41:28
Speaker 1: But I think it's fair to be critical when it's not personal. I would never be like, you know what, he's done this off the field and he doesn't want it. No, I'm just gonna tell you, like, he hasn't hit and it's the worst season of his career. So if he's like, yo, you said it's the worst season of my career, because it is, no, I'd actually be like, I didn't say that, Alan said it.
00:41:45
Speaker 5: But I know what you mean.
00:41:46
Speaker 2: Like the personal thing, like if you start getting into well, this guy doesn't try this guy he doesn't want it. Like there are certain things you can't like I can't gauge metrics on how driven somebody is. I don't have access to what they're doing off of the field. True, So that part is obviously not fair.
00:42:06
Speaker 1: And when it comes to baseball, I always think it's unfair. But the on are two hits. They weren't like we Yeah, well there's a picture. I mean, just because the team only had two hits doesn't mean like the team didn't show.
00:42:15
Speaker 4: Up or they didn't try or whatever.
00:42:17
Speaker 5: The point is, all.
00:42:18
Speaker 1: Right, here's what we're gonna do. On the other side, we'll get to the rap to kick off our number two. Now, we can't yet take a break you wanted a while, because in order to take a break, we would need need we would need Brent, and Brent I think is getting some audio from Craig Stammon.
00:42:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, he's working on some other stuff for us.
00:42:32
Speaker 4: All right, so we will We'll just keep talming. We'll just talk.
00:42:35
Speaker 5: That's what we do.
00:42:35
Speaker 2: What do you want to talk about? What's a plan this weekend? You're going to what you're gonna snap dragon? Oh yeah, tomorrow if you go slap dragging tomorrow.
00:42:41
Speaker 1: Because the acetecs have a free scrimmage with free parking. All right, three weeks out from their opener tomorrow, five thirty. Hopefully I see some mass tech fans tomorrow.
00:42:49
Speaker 4: You're gonna be there.
00:42:50
Speaker 5: Right taking you're taking your son?
00:42:52
Speaker 4: Okay, what time are you getting there?
00:42:53
Speaker 6: Tomo.
00:42:54
Speaker 2: What time are you getting there? Five fifteen minutes earlier. You're gonna be there fifteen fiftetes earlier.
00:42:59
Speaker 5: You see me.
00:43:00
Speaker 2: I'll be out on the field doing push ups in the corner over there, just getting ready for the football season.
00:43:05
Speaker 1: Oh I like that one handed. Like every time the score a touchdown, you'll keep adding up the push.
00:43:09
Speaker 2: One hand, two knees, two knees touching the ground.
00:43:12
Speaker 5: And one man touched the ground.
00:43:14
Speaker 4: So you're traveling this weekend, right?
00:43:16
Speaker 2: Uh, not really, but going up to Pasadena, MO. That's not like travel. I feel like travel makes it sound like you're going across the.
00:43:22
Speaker 4: Country, right, But you're not doing that.
00:43:25
Speaker 2: I'm not going to cross, not across the country.
00:43:27
Speaker 5: Craig Stammin.
00:43:27
Speaker 4: You're gonna hear from him. Coming up in fifteen minutes.

00:33:46

00:42:50

00:42:52

00:42:53
Speaker 6: Tomo.
