Last minute, Tony Montana killed a man for a green card. This minnute, he finds out what that green card buys him. Spoiler: it’s not a mansion.
In minute eight, Tony and Manny are out of Freedomtown, legal, and working at a food stand in Little Havana. For Manny, it’s a fresh start under the Miami sun. For Tony, it’s an insult. 🌴
In this episode, we explore the “honest” version of the American Dream that the film offers Tony, and why he rejects it almost instantly. In the Temper Tracker, we find out why making food for minimum wage sends Tony’s temper higher than committing a murder did. We dig into the real history of Little Havana, from Calle Ocho and Versailles restaurant to Domino Park and the Cuban “enclave economy” that helped exiles build new lives. We also put a number on Tony’s frustration by looking at what minimum wage paid in 1980. Plus, we look at how the film shifts from gray to color as Miami finally comes into view, and check in on Tony and Manny’s very different attitudes toward their new life.
Eight minutes down. 162 to go. 🎧
