Launching an essential, multi-week teaching series on Restoring the Family’s Radio Ministry, Pastors Stan and Cynthia Shelby begin evaluating the core moral baseline necessary for raising kingdom-minded, resilient children: Core Values in Parenting.
Drawing on their combined 50-plus years as public school educators and leaders—Pastor Stan with 33 years in elementary classrooms; Cynthia with over 25 years spanning middle school, high school, and elementary administration—the Shelbys transition from examining family structures to instilling foundational character traits. Opening the series, they examine Honesty—why truthfulness is the single most vital baseline for household trust, personal accountability, and long-term spiritual growth.
Why Honesty Must Be Taught: Overcoming the “Default Lie”Pastors Stan and Cynthia address a universal developmental reality that often catches parents off guard:
=== THE ARCHITECTURE OF DOMESTIC HONESTY ===
FOLLY / SIN NATURE BOUND IN A CHILD (PROVERBS 22:15) ──┐
├──► ORDERED DISCIPLINE & HONESTY
EXPLICIT TRUTHTELLING & REASONED CONSEQUENCES ──┘
Scripture observes that folly is bound up in the heart of a child (Proverbs 22:15). You never have to teach a toddler or young student how to lie; self-preservation and dishonesty are defaults of human nature.
=== DEFAULTS vs. TRAINED INTEGRITY ===
UNCHECKED NATURAL DEFAULT TRAINED KINGDOM INTEGRITY
========================= =========================
• Reflexive Lying to Avoid Trouble • Confessing Mistakes and Seeking Relief
• Hiding Mistakes Under the "Bush" • Accepting Natural Consequences
• Anxiety, Fear, and Suspicion • Peace of Mind and Emotional Security
• Corrupts Morals and Character • Establishes Unshakeable Personal Trust
4 Core Benefits of Training Children in HonestyThe Chocolate on the Face Realignment: “Parents are often shocked when their children lie to them,” Pastor Stan notes. *”A toddler will stand in the kitchen with chocolate smeared across their cheeks and shaving cream on the dog, look you right in the eye, and say, ‘I didn’t do it.’ Lying is a default.
In my 33 years of teaching elementary school, I’ve heard parents insist, ‘My little angel never lies.’ You can believe that if you want, but the reality is every child will fib to avoid trouble. Our job as parents isn’t to pretend our kids are perfect; it’s to actively train them out of that default and reward honesty.”*

(1 Corinthians 15:33) Ethical Decision-Making
4. Reducing Stress & Anxiety • Living in Open Light • Eliminates Fear of Getting
Caught; Brings Peace
Truthfulness allows children to form authentic, secure bonds with parents, educators, coaches, and peers. When an adult knows a child is honest, the child earns greater autonomy and responsibility.
2. Teaching Personal Responsibility and Problem-SolvingHonest children learn to accept the results of their choices. Admitting a mistake immediately allows a child to fix the problem rather than wasting emotional energy hiding it under cover-ups.
3. Strengthening Moral CharacterHonesty is the foundation of personal integrity. Scripture warns that bad company corrupts good character (1 Corinthians 15:33). Teaching honesty equips children to choose quality friends who walk in truth.
4 Scriptural Models of Truth, Secrets, and RestitutionCynthia on Rewarding Courageous Truth: “Telling the truth when you know you’re going to get into trouble requires immense bravery,” Cynthia emphasizes. “We must praise and reward our children when they demonstrate the courage to confess a mistake. Honesty reduces anxiety because a child living in the truth never has to carry the chronic stress or fear of getting caught.”
Scripture provides clear, unshakeable narratives illustrating how God views truthfulness and deceit:
After eating the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve attempted to hide from God in the bushes. God confronted them directly, proving that hiding mistakes from an all-seeing God is impossible. Confessing brings relief; hiding deepens the consequences.
Achan secretly stole forbidden plunder from Jericho and hid it beneath his tent floor. His hidden sin brought defeat upon the entire Israelite community until the truth was exposed. Lesson: Secrets and dishonesty never stay buried, and cover-ups harm the whole family.
When Jesus entered his home, the dishonest tax collector experienced a complete heart transformation. He committed to making fourfold restitution for everything he had stolen. Lesson: True honesty requires acknowledging past wrongs and actively making things right.
Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold land and lied to the Holy Spirit about the donation amount—pretending to give 100% while secretly keeping back a portion. Both fell dead on the spot. Lesson: God severely detests hypocrisy and deceptive performance.
Transforming your domestic environment into a sanctuary of truth requires deliberate, daily practice:
-
Eliminate the Cover-Up Culture: Teach your children that making a mistake costs 10% of your trust, but lying about it costs 100%. Make telling the truth the safest choice in your home.
-
Practice Repentance and Restitution: Model how to apologize, seek forgiveness, and make things right when you make a mistake as a parent.
-
Refuse to Cover for Unrighteousness: Teach your children never to lie or cover for friends who are doing wrong. Keep your hands clean and walk in the light.
Honesty is not a trait children inherit by accident—it is a kingdom habit forged through daily instruction, loving discipline, and parentally modeled character.
Evaluate your domestic climate today. Reward honest confessions, eliminate deceitful cover-ups, align your words with God’s Word, and walk in the fullness of your assignment!
