00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:03.600
Influencing you that you're not fully aware of.
00:00:04.879 --> 00:00:06.959
Yo, welcome to the show.
00:00:07.280 --> 00:00:10.160
All about mental health and overall health.
00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:11.839
Let's get to it.
00:00:18.640 --> 00:00:32.799
I am extremely excited that you're here today because we're gonna dive into something that is foundational, something I wish more people had a clear, approachable understanding of, and that's therapy.
00:00:33.039 --> 00:00:39.600
Specifically, what therapy actually is and the different types of therapies that exist.
00:00:39.759 --> 00:00:50.240
If you've ever thought I know therapy helps, but I don't really know what kind I need, or even what do therapists actually do.
00:00:50.560 --> 00:00:53.119
This episode is for you.
00:00:53.439 --> 00:01:00.880
Shout out to the people that can think that think that they can be therapists that have no training, no educational background with psychology whatsoever.
00:01:01.039 --> 00:01:02.159
This is for you.
00:01:02.479 --> 00:01:07.920
As a mental health professional, I've seen firsthand how confusing this landscape can be.
00:01:08.159 --> 00:01:16.400
There isn't just one kind of therapy, there are many approaches, each with different philosophies, techniques, and ending goals.
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:23.200
So today I'm breaking it all down in a way that's simply real and practical.
00:01:23.359 --> 00:01:25.040
But let's go dive back.
00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:27.760
What is therapy actually?
00:01:27.920 --> 00:01:30.000
Like what it is, what is it actually?
00:01:30.159 --> 00:01:31.359
Let's start with the basics.
00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:43.040
So therapy is at its core, basically, it is a structured collaborative process between a trained professional and a client.
00:01:43.280 --> 00:01:50.640
It's aimed to improve mental, emotional, as well as behavioral well-being.
00:01:50.959 --> 00:01:57.920
It's not just about talking, it's not all talking, it's not just talk about talking about all your problems.
00:01:58.159 --> 00:02:02.319
And if a therapist ever says, I'm gonna give you some advice, run away.
00:02:02.560 --> 00:02:04.159
Run away, we don't give advice.
00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:15.520
Therapy is about increasing awareness, it's about understanding patterns, it's about building skills, processing experiences, as well as creating change.
00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:21.360
And here's something important therapy is not one size fits all.
00:02:21.680 --> 00:02:25.520
We don't all wear a large, we don't all wear a medium, we all know we're small.
00:02:25.840 --> 00:02:28.000
Therapy is not a one size fits all.
00:02:28.159 --> 00:02:40.080
Different people need different approaches depending on their personality, depending on their goal, their history, the issue that they're dealing with, and that's why understanding the different types of therapies matters.
00:02:40.240 --> 00:02:52.319
Let's start with the most well known that is cognitive behavioral therapy, or also known as CBT, not CBT, CBT.
00:02:53.120 --> 00:03:02.400
CBT is based on simply the power of idea, your thoughts, your feelings, your behaviors, those things are all interconnected.
00:03:02.479 --> 00:03:04.960
I like to say physical reaction, but that's a whole other conversation.
00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:12.000
So if you change one of those things, thought, emotion, behavior, you can influence the other.
00:03:12.159 --> 00:03:19.759
In CBT, we focus on identifying negative thought patterns, cognitive distortions, unhelpful behaviors.
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:23.840
For example, you may think I always mess things up.
00:03:24.159 --> 00:03:31.039
That thought leads to anxiety or shame, which leads to avoidance as well as procrastination.
00:03:31.360 --> 00:03:40.560
CBT helps to challenge that thought, replace it with something more concrete, something that's more accurate, something that's more functional.
00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:48.080
Take action in different ways, it's structured, goal-oriented, as well as short term.
00:03:48.319 --> 00:04:00.800
CBT works especially well for anxiety, depression, OCD, phobias, but it's not for everyone.
00:04:01.439 --> 00:04:11.360
Some people find it too structured or too focused on fixing thoughts rather than exploring deeper emotional experiences.
00:04:11.840 --> 00:04:17.040
Now let's shift into something deeper: psychodynamic therapy.
00:04:17.360 --> 00:04:25.279
This approach is rooted in the idea that the unconscious processes shape our behaviors.
00:04:25.439 --> 00:04:31.439
In other words, there are things influencing you that you're not fully aware of.
00:04:31.839 --> 00:04:39.920
This therapy focuses on early life experiences, attachment patterns, relationships, uh, emotional insight.
00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:48.959
Instead of asking how do we fix this thought, psychodynamic therapy asks, where do this pattern come from?
00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:51.120
Where does this pattern form?
00:04:51.279 --> 00:04:52.480
When did this start to happen?
00:04:52.639 --> 00:05:10.000
For example, if you're struggling with trust, we might explore if we're practicing psychodynamic, we may explore your earlier relationships, repeated relationship dynamics, emotional wounds that haven't been processed yet.
00:05:10.240 --> 00:05:20.240
This kind of therapy is less structured, more explorative, often long, like longer term.
00:05:20.959 --> 00:05:30.879
It's especially helpful for relationship issues, identity struggles, long standing emotional patterns.
00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:36.639
Next, we have the humanistic approach, like person-centered therapy.
00:05:36.800 --> 00:05:40.000
This type of therapy is built on core belief.
00:05:40.399 --> 00:05:45.040
People have an inherent capacity for growth.
00:05:45.600 --> 00:05:55.839
There in this in this therapist's role isn't necessarily to fix you, but to create the condition where you can grow.
00:05:56.319 --> 00:06:06.959
That includes empathy, unconditional, positive regard, apathy in a person-centered therapy.
00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:10.720
The therapist isn't directing the sessions heavily.
00:06:10.879 --> 00:06:15.600
Instead, what they're doing, what we're doing, is reflecting.
00:06:15.839 --> 00:06:17.600
We are validating.
00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:21.920
We're helping you access your own insight.
00:06:22.879 --> 00:06:28.079
This approach can feel very supportive as well as empowering.
00:06:30.480 --> 00:06:41.600
It's especially helpful for self-esteem issues, identity exploring, people who feel misunderstood or judged.
00:06:41.920 --> 00:06:48.240
Now let's talk about DBT, aka dialect behavioral therapy.
00:06:49.439 --> 00:07:02.560
DBT is actually a form of CBT, but with an added focus on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness.
00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:12.000
It was originally developed for individuals with intense emotional experience, especially those with borderline personality disorder.
00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:16.000
But today it's used much more broadly.
00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:22.879
DBT teaches very concrete skills.
00:07:23.199 --> 00:07:36.720
Skills like how to tolerate distress without making things worse, how to manage overwhelming emotions, how to communicate effectively in relationships.
00:07:36.959 --> 00:07:44.720
One of the core ideas in DBT is dalex, holding two truths at once.
00:07:44.959 --> 00:07:49.120
For example, I'm doing the best I can and I need to change.
00:07:49.279 --> 00:07:51.759
That balance is extremely powerful.
00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:57.920
Now let's talk about my favorite approaches, and that is trauma-focused therapies.
00:07:58.240 --> 00:08:06.079
These approaches are specifically designed to address trauma and its impact on the nervous system.
00:08:06.319 --> 00:08:14.879
Some examples include one of my faves, EMDR, which stands for eye movement, desensitizing and reprocessing.
00:08:15.040 --> 00:08:17.920
Another favorite, all of these are my favorite, of course.
00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:23.040
Somatic therapies, trauma focus, cognitive behavior therapy.
00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:28.560
These therapies recognize something that is more geared towards trauma.
00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:35.440
Trauma isn't just stored in the memory, but these modalities recognize that trauma is stored in the body.
00:08:35.600 --> 00:08:46.960
So, with that being said, treatment often includes processing trauma memories or processing traumatic memories, regulating the nervous system, reconnecting with the body.
00:08:47.200 --> 00:08:52.960
For people with trauma, uh traditional talk therapy alone may not be enough.
00:08:53.120 --> 00:09:00.480
These approaches are more specialized and often more structured around safety and panic.
00:09:00.639 --> 00:09:03.279
Not all therapy is individual.
00:09:03.519 --> 00:09:09.919
Couples and family therapy focuses on relationships as well as the unit of treatment.
00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:15.440
Instead of asking, what what's wrong with this person?
00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:19.840
We typically ask, What's happening in the system?
00:09:20.879 --> 00:09:28.480
This type of therapy looks at communication patterns, roles within the family, conflict cycles.
00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:33.039
It's not picking sides, that's not what it's about.
00:09:33.200 --> 00:09:38.879
It's about understanding dynamics and helping people interact in a healthy way.
00:09:39.120 --> 00:09:45.679
So, with all of these options, how do you choose what works for you?
00:09:46.159 --> 00:09:53.200
Here's the truth you don't need to have it perfectly figured out, that's not what the goal is.
00:09:53.360 --> 00:09:56.799
The truth is, a good therapist will help guide you.
00:09:57.200 --> 00:10:00.240
But here's some general pointers.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:23.759
If you want structure and tools, CBT or DBT, if you want deeper insight, psychodynamic, if you want a supportive, non-direct space, humanistic, if you're dealing with trauma, trauma-focused therapy, also the relationship matters more than the modality.
00:10:23.919 --> 00:10:30.399
You can have the right type of therapy with the wrong therapist, and in that case, it won't work.
00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:41.120
Therapy is not just one thing, it's a spectrum, it's a spectrum of approaches, each offering different pathways to healing as well as growth.
00:10:41.279 --> 00:10:48.159
And the most important takeaway is this there is no single correct way to do therapy.
00:10:48.320 --> 00:10:51.120
What matters is finding what works for you.
00:10:51.360 --> 00:11:01.200
Listen, if this episode has helped you clarify things or has given you a new perspective, I'm really glad that you spent the time with me to gain that.
00:11:01.360 --> 00:11:06.080
And if it's given any insight, please share this with your friends.
00:11:06.320 --> 00:11:08.720
Share this with everybody.
00:11:08.960 --> 00:11:14.480
And if you've been thinking about therapy, maybe this is a sign to explore it a little bit more.
00:11:14.639 --> 00:11:15.919
Thank you for being here.
00:11:16.080 --> 00:11:16.960
I'll see you next time.
