Speaker 1: You know, if it's hum day on this the eighth right of April, you know what that means, Eddie. If we are on the eighth day of April in terms of this month, you know what that means. It means two things in terms of your calendar, which I know you probably have as and I've known why do people call it a red letter day? Isn't it a red number day?
00:00:28
Speaker 2: Right?
00:00:29
Speaker 3: All I know is that I'm like five weeks away from my vacation.
00:00:34
Speaker 1: Where are you going on vacation?
00:00:35
Speaker 3: I'll be in the the horrible state in weather that is Hawaii.
00:00:40
Speaker 1: Oh, you can go get yourself with Humahuoman go up waha.
00:00:44
Speaker 3: No, because I want to make friends with the Holles. I don't want to trouble.
00:00:47
Speaker 1: Yeah, that would be trouble because they're very protective of the Huma human upuaha. But on this the eighth day of April, there are a couple of things in play here, One meaning that we we are halfway from April to the point in April that we're going to do it. The halfway mark between now and when we talked to Peter Brady on the show, because that's the sixteenth, a week from tomorrow. Now, I'm not saying that I'm overly geeked and psyched about it, but I haven't slept in two days.
00:01:15
Speaker 3: Since we can cameras start talking about it with it any other guests that we have on the show.
00:01:19
Speaker 1: Yesterday, I was at the gas station, went in to get myself a coke and ended up in the circle k for over fifty two minutes because people wanted to hear more about my opportunity to go see the Brady Bunch house and eat pork chops and apple sauce was good for night? Now?
00:01:33
Speaker 3: Was it people that were of your age or was it kids? Because we are such a kid friendly program.
00:01:38
Speaker 1: Change that's right, Well, kids go crazy over it. I had to explain to them what the Brady Bunch was, and then once I did, they were very excited for me. Pacers last night at the field House losing to the Iowa Wolves the Noblesville Boom dropping that game. But there are things to take away from it and positives to go with it. Also, one week from today, your taxes are due. Be done your taxes, Eddie?
00:02:01
Speaker 3: I have I have done my taxes?
00:02:03
Speaker 1: Yes? Did you do them? Or do you have someone else prepare them for you.
00:02:06
Speaker 3: Yes, okay, I always I like to uh, I like to do both cover my bases.
00:02:13
Speaker 1: Okay, very well, those things are upcoming.
00:02:18
Speaker 3: But your taxes done, Jake, they are okay. Good Now, with all that money you make from IndyCar, I know you have to go to somebody to do that for you.
00:02:27
Speaker 1: You know what, I have a number of.
00:02:28
Speaker 3: Those speaking things you have to do in month of May. You know, there's such a hot commodity during the month of that.
00:02:33
Speaker 2: That's it.
00:02:33
Speaker 1: Of course, my two weeks of relevance are upcoming. But the numbers game is the kind of the theme of today, crunching the numbers and figuring out the numbers. And it is not uncommon for me probably to have contrarian thought. I know that it is not by design. I don't wake up and say, okay, what's the popular narra and how can I be opposite that. I would like to think that what you hear is what you get on this show. And I'm I do think that there are people in radio and television that spout off and take the side of and narrate about things that they don't even believe, but they do it because that's what's going to move the needle. That's what's going to get people talking. And I understand that, and I'm not saying that that's an unwise strategy, but it's not one with which I necessarily find a motivation on this show. But when it comes to crunching numbers, and in sport today, here are the numbers. In Division one college basket, there are roughly fifty six hundred players. There are roughly fifty six hundred players that are getting scholarship in Division I college basketball in twenty twenty six. Of those just shy if three thousand now have entered their name in the transfer portal. Now, the danger in that, of course, for a lot of players is you're a player at one university and you decide that you are going to throw your name in the transfer portal, and maybe the university has even said to you like, yeah, you can come back if it doesn't work out. But for a lot of schools it is, hey, you're allowed to throw your name in the transfer portal. But at that point, we are going to begin, via the portal or through players incoming, We're going to go ahead and replace you because we assume that that means that you are looking at greener pastures, and so we have to assume you're gone. And therefore there are some players that if they throw their hat in that ring, what they're not doing is crunching the numbers, and what they're not doing is saying to themselves, Okay. So if I'm entering the transfer portal and I'm vacating my seat at school a where I was, I unfortunately am there are not as many offers as I thought, because not only are there other players that are transferring, but there are also high school players that now are getting opportunity. And so therefore this in the game of musical chairs. The seats may fill up, and some players may find themselves on the outside looking in. And the other thing to look at with all of this is what is this doing to the continuity of college basketball? What is this doing to the my program, my team, the familiarity, the growing of a team itself. And the easy commentary would be to sit here and say, this is an outrage. This needs to be stopped immediately. I'm so tired of this. I'm a diehard fan of this team or that team, and I can't believe these kids don't have the same love and passion for it that I do. And let me explain what I mean by that. One of the things that I have found the most fascinating in covering sports now for twenty five years is the number of athletes that I interview, as I have mentioned before, and I will ask them, what is your favorite sport? And people are surprised to hear sometimes a that I asked that, because I think, what am more on. This guy's getting paid millions of dollars or gal to play a sport. Of course that's their favorite sport. And then you find out the number of players that play basketball, play football, play baseball, play tennis, and yet they say, well, my favorite sport actually is one of the others. But I wasn't as good at that. I had a natural ability to this sport and it allowed me to go to college, which then allowed me to make a professional career out of it. So that's why I played the sport that I play. And you also find that fans get emotionally and now of course financially invested within college athletics to the point where you say to yourself, I grew up dreaming of playing for State U. I grew up dreaming of playing for Indiana, Purdue, Butler, Notre Dame, whatever it might be. And so because you had that dream, you had that passion, you had that desire, and so many of us had that for such a long time, and then we got to the age where we hit the ceiling of what athletically our career was going to afford us. And so we then were left to vicariously look at others that were great players, that were afforded an opportunity that we only dreamed of, and we then have a tendency to begrudge them, maybe somewhat driven by our own envy, but we can't grasp or understand why they don't soak in, embrace, and hold onto with absolutely clutching grip that same opportunity that we would have done anything to get. And oftentimes it's because that player is playing that sport or playing for that school that you loved and dreamed of, because they have a natural God gave an ability to do it, and because that's the school that offered them the most opportunity of playing time, minutes, or now money to go to that school. So their allegiance is to a great extent to themselves versus those other things that we have embedded and just thought for so long should be because we expect our athletes to reciprocate our thought and our emotion. And where we stand today is in crunching the numbers theme of the day. A lot of people look at the numbers that they are investing into a program and they're saying, I'm writing good money to get these players there. I'm supporting the program by buying my season tickets, being a member of the Booster Club, and also making contribution to the nil collective that is being placed out there. And all I ask in return is that player have the same loyalty that I have. I get it, and so therefore it would be easy for me to come on here. The easy narrative, the obvious narrative, would be to come on and say and sit here and badger and hammer on that till the cows come home, because most of you would agree with me, and I understand that. And it is never my desire by design to be contrarian. I don't wake up and say, that's the common thought, so let me take the other. But in this case I probably will have, and it surprises me myself. The contrarian opinion, and let me explain why, because it all ties in if you drive up Allisonville Road. If you drive up Allisonville Road and you cross past seventy first Street going north, the second street on the right is the entrance to Steinmeyer State's Subdivision, built in the late sixties. My family moved there in the early seventies, mid seventies. There's a hoop in every driveway, nearly every driveway. I say every nearly every driveway, and I can tell you right now the address of nearly all of them because I had a paper route for four years. I was an honor carrier, mind you, for the Indianapolis News, and I knew where every basket was because every day after school, when I was delivering those newspapers, I would see guys shooting hoops in their driveway and I would throw off that paper bag and get involved in a game of twenty one, or a game of horse, or just a flat out pickup game. And I spent hours upon hours upon hours in the driveways of Haines Avenue and Butler in Galloway and Grand Avenue and Steinmeyer Drive you name it. I spent hours shooting hoops. What off on my driveway, but we had a hill driveway, not a flat one. Steve Walford talked about the importance of a flat driveway perfectly symmetrical right in terms of not symmetrical but angles. And all of the time that I did it, all I wanted to do was play basketball for Indiana University. I grew up in Bob Knights Indiana, didn't like Purdue, loved Indiana. All I wanted to do was play basketball for Indiana University, and I assumed that that meant that every other kid that had the opportunity to do so would absolutely cash in on it. One of the houses that right there in Steinmeyer States, Rosemary Drive goes right into Steinmeyer Drive, and right there on the intersection, straight ahead the house with a driveway with a basketball goal. Alan Henderson lived in that house. So somebody from Steinmeyer did make it eventually to play for Bob Knight, but it wasn't me. And I loved everything about Indiana University. And then when it came time to go to college, JAK wasn't necessarily what we would call the academic type. I didn't quote apply myself all the time, and so Indiana was not necessarily in the cards for me. So I chose what I thought was the best opportunity for me, and I went to the University of Kansas because I thought it would be like going to IU without the strict admission requirements. And I was terribly homesick, and as a result, it was a disastrous year. And I went to Kansas and after one year I had to completely regroup. Now there were all kinds of kids at Kansas that couldn't fathom why I didn't love everything about the University of Kansas. And there were probably kids at Kansas that would have loved to have had the opportunity to go to the University of Kansas, but they didn't get that chance. But I did, and I completely let it run between my fingertips and right down my leg because I just wasn't invested in it academically, emotionally, I had no bond to it, and as a result, I left Kansas. I came back, I went to IUPUY for a semester to kind of regroup things, and then ultimately ended up transferring to Indiana University my point, and then I still hadn't graduated, so I ended up doing online courses that were portaled through Indiana University Kocomo technically speaking, for my last nineteen hours that I needed, which turned into a few more. But the point being, in my college career technically speaking, I attended four universities, four of them. Took me four universities to get my college degree, and one of those universities that I attended, I didn't in any way, shape or form take advantage of the situation, nor think about the fact how much other people would have desired to be in the position that I was in at that school because it wasn't the right school for me. It wasn't the right fit for me. And yes, we can sit here and say because money is involved therefore, and we are in this new erab with the transfer portal opening up this week and all of these players out there, and we can sit here and say that, how dare they be blasphemous about the elite game of college basketball. They should respect this the way I would if I was given that opportunity. They should love this school the way I would love playing for that school if I was given the opportunity. I can't believe that I pay that much in season tickets that I'm a member of the Booster Club. I love this university, in this team Indiana, Purdue, Butler, no Tre Dame, whatever it might be, I love that school more than anybody. I can't imagine that this young man doesn't see before him the opportunity and how dare he or she throw their name into the portal to look elsewhere? But the thing I don't understand is twofold number one. When I tell people that I had to go to four different universities in order to graduate, that I had to go to two different universities before finally landing into one that felt right for me. When I tell people that, they always say, man, that is great. Good for you, what a great story, What a great story. You right out of the box, it didn't go well for you. You had to find somewhere else. You kind of went your way through that until you could finally get to the place that you wanted to be. And then to finish it, you went, technically speaking online, somewhere else. Good for you, good persistence. You found the situation that was best for you, And you say to yourself, but they Jake, that's different. You weren't getting paid and you weren't chasing dollars right, You're right, I wasn't chasing dollars. And the number of people that look at right now at college athletes and say this is ridiculous. I'm so sick and tired of these young kids getting paid all this money and leaving my university to go to another one because they're gonna get an extra fifty grand. That's absurd. But we live in a country all the time. Eddie. Let me ask you, what elementary school did you attend?
00:17:26
Speaker 3: Attended to primarily Valley Mills.
00:17:29
Speaker 1: Okay, Valley Mills. Did you happen to have a buddy kindergarten? First grade, second grade, third grade, whatever it might be. We all know this kid. You liked him, good kid, fun to play kickball with at recess, good student and art class, made funny pictures. Everybody liked him. And then one day they were just gone. You're like, what happened to Billy? He moved? Yes, his dad got a job and they moved. Give me the name of the kid, Give me the first name of the kid. I can't remember his name now, but I know he was memorable. But you had a kid like that, right, multiple probably?
00:18:02
Speaker 4: Okay?
00:18:04
Speaker 1: My case. Chris White lived down the street from me. Loved Chris White. Chris and his brother Greg loved him Chris White. One day we're in school. I'll never forget third grade, and my sister's like, oh my gosh, did you hear what the Whites are moving? What they're moving? Why are they moving? They're moving to Saint Louis. What we love the Whites? We play Capture the Flag all the time. Why are they moving? Dad got a new job, got a transfer. Now the reality is probably uprooted his entire family and moved because their dad was getting a job somewhere where he was getting ten grand more. Got to do it, understandable, got a promotion, have to do it. So why do we as a society just accept and applaud when an adult uproots their entire family, kids included, dog cat, everybody moving three states over for an extra ten to fifteen grand Why do we, as a culture and a society applaud a middle tier academic radio host who went to four universities to finally reach the ultimate destination and find his comfort zone, but but grudge an athlete that does the same over two years at two different schools because he's trying to find or she's trying to find the right fit. Why do we think that it's wrong that a twenty year old goes from somewhere where they're making two hundred grand to a place that's going to pay them three hundred and fifty grand, and we think that that shows lack of loyalty. Yet we applaud the family value of somebody that uproots their family with a Mayflower truck and goes seven states over all for an extra four percent. I just think there's a hypocrisy in all of it, and a lot of it is rooted in exact what I was talking about in the beginning. A lot of it is rooted in thinking about that driveway where you were shooting hoops, and the dreams and the vision you had, and the fact that you understand and expect that and anticipate and hope you hope that everyone has the same passion for that university, for that dream that you had, And what you don't stop to think about is the fact that so many of these players actually are simply trying to facilitate for themselves the immediacy of that better opportunity, that better life, or that better fit. And if the kid that's in the transfer portal. Right now, some over three thousand of them simply said, I'm in the portal because I got homesick. I'm in the portal because maybe this is what they should all say. I'm in the portal not because I'm looking for a better payday. I'm in the portal because I'm a geography made and they're phasing out that program at my university and I'd like to become a geography major elsewhere. Everybody go, hooray, that's awesome. Academics. First, what a bright young person. Boy, They got their head screwed on straight. But we can't stand the fact that people younger than we are are making more money than we are and the dollars that are going through it. And then of course there are those that get completely hoodwinked, and you feel for them. There is naivete all over the place when it comes to players and the transfer portal. And I mean, I do get a kick out of and I am as much as anybody else. The cynic overhearing that some player that never stepped on the floor at some university is transferring quote according to his agent, his agent, his agent, his representative, Are you kidding me? His agent probably is his buddy that's in law school. But that's okay. But it is now to the point where this is where we are and this is where it's going to be for a long time. One of two things when it comes to the portal, one of two things come into play, and that is you either now are just going to accept it, or you're going to be miserable forever because it's not changing. And you can sit here and say all day long, I can't believe the players are leaving my basketball program that I am such a huge fan of that is a part of this state and a part of this livelihood. But you are a hypocrite if you're saying that while at the same time anticipating and getting your popcorn ready to celebrate the fact that the NFL Draft is going to be represented by Indiana University Zone for Nanda Mendoza, who is in Bloomington for eighteen weeks as part of a transfer portal and made over a million dollars while playing for Indiana, this is just where we are. It's where we are and it's not going back. And so when analyzing and trying to figure out whether you're for it or against it. Maybe sometimes we all need to think about when you were that kid in the driveway and what exactly all of it means, and the fact that you wished you could be in that situation but never thought through how you would handle it if you were there. Pacers last night dropping one. That was a weird one, Eddie, because this has been the case for so many things that I've said about this team this year. Number One, I couldn't believe I took my buddy Eric, who's as big a first person that's ever called me on the radio listener, Eric, second time I've taken him to a game. And this guy is Pacers through and through and knows the NBA. And we sat there and had a great time last night, and we're chatting and we're getting you know, talking about things and the roster and moves and everything else, and reliving the very first time that he called the radio show with me, you know, old show that I did way back when. And we're sitting there talking so much that then I look up and I go, wait a minute, they're down twenty eight. And when I looked up at the scoreboard to see that they're down twenty eight, I also see like very few empty seats, and I'm like, once again, it amazes me. Not only are there seventeen thousand and fifteen thousand whatever it was there last night for a team that's won that many games, but in addition to that, the number of times Eddy and maybe in working it on the radio broadcast as the producer for the radio network last night for the Pacers. It felt differently for you, But sitting in the arena, it didn't feel like they were down twenty five like it seemed like they were kind of hanging around at seven to nine point game and then all of a sudden, literally I look over and I look up, and I'm like, they're down twenty five. Yeah, that was in the second quarter, right, that's probably right. Yeah, it was an interesting one last night, to say least.
00:24:54
Speaker 5: And I saw Pat Boiling had a post on Twitter about the same thing that you're saying, that it was a random Tuesday night at the end of the regular season, in a season where the Pacers have won eighteen games, and they were still filled to the brim.
00:25:10
Speaker 1: Unbelievable.
00:25:11
Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
00:25:13
Speaker 1: There was one thing that happened last night that I saw.
00:25:17
Speaker 3: There were a couple of things last night Major League Baseball.
00:25:19
Speaker 1: That I saw you saw fat guy's pants fall down? Right, I don't know, Jake. Do you think it might be a fat gals pants fell down? And we don't know? You saw a person of of rotund nature? That was and rogonists whose pants fell down?
00:25:37
Speaker 3: Right, Okay, you're gonna have to explain and drogonists to me.
00:25:40
Speaker 1: Maybe that might be one where I misused the word Can you look up the definition of the word and drogonists? What is rotun rotund? A rotunda rotun rotund one of a round nature? Can you look up in drogonists, I might have misused the word A N d r O g O n o U. I believe A and d r O g y n o us.
00:26:04
Speaker 2: There you go.
00:26:04
Speaker 1: Uh, what has the definition of been draggedness? This might have to do with something having nothing to do with what I was thinking.
00:26:09
Speaker 3: Partly male and partly female in appearance.
00:26:12
Speaker 1: Okay, Pat, not from Pat boiling, but Pat from SNL and drogness. Right, you just don't know. So last night in a baseball game, Eddie sends me a video and piked in well dyked and posted it. Then you sent it to me and you said on it, like, don't open this with kids around, And I got I thought maybe it was like the Pamela Tommy Lee tape. And it was a foul ball. What game was it? The Cubs game?
00:26:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, Chicago Cubs Tampa Bay Rays.
00:26:40
Speaker 1: Went into the basically the bullpen area in right field are just shy of it, and a fan reaching over for.
00:26:45
Speaker 3: It enthusiastically was trying to get the foul ball.
00:26:50
Speaker 1: Okay, And and seemed as though the bridge robe did malfunction? Did the bridges did the bridges get the bridges got caught on something?
00:26:59
Speaker 3: And I know Tropicana had a visible roof to where you could see the moon.
00:27:04
Speaker 1: It was now the camera person failed us all by quickly panning away before seeing exactly how the situation was handled. Right.
00:27:12
Speaker 3: Oh, there's a longer video that I found and I go back and I watched it like on loop for like five to ten minutes last night, just to see the reaction of people around. And there's one guy on the ball. He's coming and he's watching the ball, He's watching them all looks down he goes, oh my goodness, like the typical you put your fingers over your eyes, like you're trying to hold back laughter that person.
00:27:34
Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a person of a rounder nature that might have had like elastic banded pants that basically got hung up on something while they were reaching for the foul ball, and then it was all there in the glory, right, But from afar away and Eddie watched it on Loop. I came in today and you were still watching it. Matter of fact, you haven't left that booth since last night, right when you saw the video?
00:27:59
Speaker 3: No, I have not. And then did you see the fight? I majorly basea.
00:28:03
Speaker 1: I did see the Angels not aptly named last night.
00:28:06
Speaker 3: Right, Rinaldo Lopez the picture for the Braves and Jorge Solair of the Angel's former Brave.
00:28:11
Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, former teammates.
00:28:13
Speaker 3: I don't know if they were teammates together, but did.
00:28:16
Speaker 1: One of them enter the transfer portal? And that's why they're no longer teammates? How dare they? Right? I know we will go over the pacer game later on in the program. A matter of fact, I think b Swift, who works in the building. Obviously he's on afternoons from three until seven. Be Swift in the afternoons over on our sisters station Hot one hundred point nine and he is on the video boards for the Pacer game. I saw him earlier. I said he if you get a chance, stop Marina MC program in Arena MC. Yes, and there was a kid last night that was dancing on the video board and B Swift was all about it, So we might have to visit about that. Pat Knight gonna join at one o'clock today. I wanted to talk about not just what was done for the members of the seventy sixteen, but I think Pat could also add some perspectives just on not just the carousel that is the transfer portal. But of course he's worked from the NBA scouting standpoint as well, so we can get into pacers a little bit. With Pat, we'll get into as well. The Master's getting set to get underway. Will Haskett will join us two thirty. So a loaded show on a gorgeous day that's warming up. It's one of those days you start with the hoodie and end with a T shirt. You do all of the here, acquiring company on the fan. Now, I'd like to know. Look. B Swift is grooving to the music that Eddie has selected here. I'd like to know B swift since you not just and Eddie said the title correctly in arena host? Is that a proper terminology?
00:29:43
Speaker 6: Correct? That is the time I just said MC. That's why I always say people like, what do you do? I'm an MC at a pass right? But the correct term, as Eddie said, is the entering home.
00:29:52
Speaker 1: So I would like to know this when you are doing music in the afternoons as you do from three until seven on our sister station one hundred point nine, I'd like to know what song is the one that you never tire of?
00:30:04
Speaker 6: Ooh, right now is probably TI let him know. That's probably my go to right now?
00:30:10
Speaker 1: And you've done this for how long? Twelve years? In the twelve years that you've done it, what artist would you say has played more on your shows than any other? Ooh, that's a good question. I would say maybe Drake. That makes sense. Yeah, And you know, Drake is appropriate because no matter who wins a championship, he can play Drake because he's their biggest fan, right, their biggest fan every year.
00:30:35
Speaker 4: Right.
00:30:35
Speaker 1: He's a great bandwagoner. He is that and you are. For those that are bandwagon fans of the pacers, I don't think there are many, because this year, if there were Bandwagon fans, you would not see a lot. I just mentioned this. I am I'm stunned by two things. Number One that I've never brought you on earlier, because it's like, why not, right, you're the perfect person to talk pacers with, and you and I do it in the hallway fairly often. But number two, the amount of people that are still coming to games for a team that is obviously going through a year, the gap year as we call it, it's impressive. I mean, the fans have been there every night.
00:31:09
Speaker 6: No, they show up and they're loud, they're having a good time. And I give that to I give that credit to the guys, right, like, they are really out there playing ball. Like it's not like a normal where you see we've seen teams tank, right, and you know they're blatantly tanking, right, they're not playing at all, They're playing resigns. These guys are really playing basketball. They want to win, and what I think is masterful.
00:31:33
Speaker 1: And you tell me if you've noticed this. This sounds like I'm being facetious. I think Rick Carlisle. I'm not saying he should win it. I think someone should out of respect cast a vote for Rick Carlile for Coach of the Year. Absolutely, and the reason being because getting guys to still be invested when everybody knows the situation right. But the other thing that I think he does that is truly, you know, impressive, is if you know, like you can go out and have Ethan Thompson and Taylon Peter and Micah Potter on the floor and everyone knows, like, Okay, they're doing this because they you know, they're going up against Golden State and yeah they can't guard staph whatever, but they don't want. They're they're tanking. Right if you're doing tanking what they've what he has done, I think that's that. And I don't know if it's by design, but it's worked this way is they have maintained competitiveness deep enough into games that every player has gotten a taste of having to play in situations against top line rosters where things are on the line. And that's the stuff that's going to pay off down the road for them.
00:32:44
Speaker 6: No, absolutely, because like you said, you putting those guys in situations that they need to see correct. Any given point, you could be in this situation via injury forty every game, right.
00:32:56
Speaker 1: No, they're playing and it's good.
00:32:58
Speaker 6: I think the biggest part for me, not only is it Rick Carlisle, it's the assistant coaches and if you ever pay attention to ty recent Pascal, those guys are right there cheering.
00:33:10
Speaker 1: They don't have to come to the game. And that's what I mean when I say they're invested, like they're still invested. Right yeah, Okay, So let's go to this and Eddie and I have talked about this a lot, but I want your perspective. B Swift is not just the MC for the Pacers at the games, but of course you hear him on our sister station in the afternoons. Give me two players that have gotten significant minutes this year because of the situation, that have played two to three that have played themselves in the position now where you say, you know what. They may not be getting that kind of They may not be getting those kinds of minutes a year from now, but they are clearly guys that you can roll with a little bit in situations once you're back to full health. Ooh, I think jars Walker has shelt it again.
00:33:56
Speaker 6: He was a high draft pick for us. I think the guy's good, and I think he deserves it, right. Another guy that I like like that is probably Micah.
00:34:05
Speaker 1: I got Michael Potter. Michael Potter showed us he can really ball. And Michael Potter was one that when he was acquired, it almost felt like he was brought in because it was like, Okay, they've got a spot here, and they got it. You need some bodies, right, But he can shoot, he can shoot the ball, and he's and he's actually and I think this goes a little bit under maybe not as notice as much. He is a decent rebounder. I mean he can get in there and mix it up a little bit as well. I don't know that he is a thirty two minute per game galway right right, But in a twelve to eighteen.
00:34:37
Speaker 6: Minutes, he can get in, get you some points, get you some rebound, and he's playing. They got him listed as a six to nine center, which I thought was crazy.
00:34:44
Speaker 1: Like he's I see him as a powerful run That's.
00:34:46
Speaker 6: Where I see man, Like you got him at obi same height and they got one at four over one at center. I put him at the at the four and let him go to work.
00:34:53
Speaker 1: Okay, give me two to three people that have done a nice job this year, and when you look at it, you go okay, But in reality, I call it empty calorie guys. Yeah, guys that are getting minutes of getting points. But part of that is because somebody has to get minutine points in the situation, and it doesn't mean that they're part of your long term plan.
00:35:10
Speaker 6: And I hate to say this first guy because this is my guy and I love him like Q jack Clinton Jackson. I think he's done great job. He's played hard enough to get the contract guaranteed for the next three years, you know what I mean. I think he's done an amazing job when he gets in the game, but I don't know long term.
00:35:27
Speaker 1: But where he's he can't score, but oh he gets buckets.
00:35:29
Speaker 6: That's why I hate to say it, right, That's why I hate to say jack like.
00:35:33
Speaker 1: Because he can get you points and we've seen him go off. But you know what's interesting though, he seems to me, and this is not meant as a knock on him, but Quintin Jackson to me seems to be a guy that he can absolutely score for you. But I don't know that his scoring comes within the system. Typically of the offense. They do once everybody's there.
00:35:50
Speaker 6: Absolutely, Like he gets the ball, he's going to be a great fast break guy, you know what I mean. Or if he can create something off the dribble, he goes. But like you say, the system that Carlile runs, I don't know if the points come off of the screens, the down picks and anything. I don't think they do. I think he just he can shoot, he can get the points. He knows how to get to the bucket.
00:36:08
Speaker 1: What's the what's the best and worst part of the job of being the mc Ooh?
00:36:14
Speaker 6: The worst part is a contestant and you have to put your faith in them that they're not gonna cuss. Like when we playing a game. You don't know what's gonna come out of a person. Eddie, we got pat Night coming on at one o'clock. You know exactly what that's all about.
00:36:29
Speaker 3: Free tickets, you e free tickets?
00:36:30
Speaker 1: Don't have free tickets. That's the other worst part. Yeah, I'll bet I would get nervous though a lot of people. Freaking is my number one fear, right right. We talk about that all the time.
00:36:39
Speaker 6: Same for me, And it's crazy because I get in front of these fifteen thousand people and be like, uh, figured it out.
00:36:45
Speaker 1: Right, But you don't. I mean, I guess you're just kind of talking in that moment. You forget that everybody's watching it, right.
00:36:51
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's what I told somebody yesterday. I said, I just find a point in a room and it helps. Like, so if it's me and you talking, I can look over your shoulder, find something that's yellow, a logo, and that's kind of my focus point to where then everybody disappears.
00:37:03
Speaker 2: You know.
00:37:03
Speaker 1: The other thing that I think that people and you and I have talked about this I always get I always laugh at this. I think people forget when they're when you're doing the different games during the game, the family feud and things like that. I'm like, guys, they're they're asking the pacer players this. So when you're asking them, like what's the most comfortable card, They're probably not going to say a Honda Civic because they're all seven foot right, Like, think about think about who they're surveying here. Right.
00:37:29
Speaker 6: That's the hard part because you have to make sure you overly explain it to somebody because I remember we talked. I think it was Thanksgiving for you, right, and you was like Yo, why would I'm like, yeah, they they don't listen, and it's like, no, not what you think you would think.
00:37:42
Speaker 1: They were eating growing up at Thanksgiving dinner, right.
00:37:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, Like it's all about their opinion, and that's the dope part. Some people catch on it and understand it, and that's the great part because the fans. It's never you get the person that's doing the game that understands it most sometimes, but it's usually the fans that help out of getting the fan.
00:37:58
Speaker 1: That you you put up on the like for the contestants and who picks it.
00:38:02
Speaker 6: So they just tell us where to go, Hey, you're gonna be in section sixteen. Find a fan. So then it's on us to kind of be like who got on Pacer gear? Who looks like there might be knowledgeable? So I go around and I ask, hey, are you a fan? Do you understand? Do you who's your favorite player?
00:38:17
Speaker 2: Like?
00:38:17
Speaker 1: I asked certain things to see who's gonna game?
00:38:20
Speaker 2: Now.
00:38:20
Speaker 1: We had last night a situation at the Pacer game where basically twelve year old Eddie Garrison was up on the video. So you had what do you call that particular segment that was a dance cam? I think dance cam and punch dance and they go around and they're looking for the best dancer, right yep. And there was a kid that again basically Eddie without the beer it was, and he was he was like into it big time, right, he had a ball.
00:38:49
Speaker 6: That was the lot of supplause I've heard for I know it got real because when they would take it off of him, the crowd would boo, of course, and then it would cheer when it went back like it's it was real at that point.
00:39:00
Speaker 1: It's been a long time since I've heard the crowd boo because you took the camera off somebody.
00:39:04
Speaker 2: Right.
00:39:04
Speaker 6: Facts, it's normally only like it when it's like a baby. You go from a baby, it's on another like boom, go back to the q ky like booo.
00:39:11
Speaker 1: Or sometimes it's occasionally the person that thinks there at Studio fifty four, right, yes, And that also can get the crowd going a little bit, I think personally, and you can agree or disagree. I think personally. Next year, I'm very curious to see where they are, not just because if they get the draft pick, it's a big if and then the Haliburton Health to figure it out. But I think we give next year as an acclimation period and it's then the I gotta think it would be technically the twenty eight season. Yeah, I think that's when, assuming they stay healthy, look out, that's my thought.
00:39:47
Speaker 6: I got a second round playoffs next year already. I think will be a six to nine set, you know what I mean.
00:39:53
Speaker 1: I think that's probably fair.
00:39:54
Speaker 6: Yeah, And I tell people, if you look at it as a fan of the game, if you look at how this team is built, we are built to always make it to the playoff as a six seed. Like it's just how the team is structured to me as a fan, right, when you look at past guy, you look at Jay Huff, you look at Zubat, Like even before these guys, you like Jay Huff, Right, I love Huff. Huff is a great guy.
00:40:16
Speaker 1: Like he Also he hit I don't know if you've noticed this, the Jay Huff rule. He hits the first two threes of every game, every game. It's like a musk of him. Now, I'm not gonna lie to you. He swift it. Sometimes it dips off from there, well, it goes down. The stamina seems to be a little bit in play, but nonetheless, right, it's impressive.
00:40:34
Speaker 6: I'll take more three sixties than I wiel three points from Jay he had one last night, right, Yeah, Like I love the three sixty to one eighty dunks.
00:40:41
Speaker 1: I don't know what Eddie's laughing at over there, but he's laughing.
00:40:43
Speaker 3: The dunk's always cracking.
00:40:44
Speaker 6: Me out because it's the most unneeded dunk at all times. Eddie light Bro just dunk the ball, but you're gonna get a half reverse and you're gonna get the three sixty.
00:40:53
Speaker 1: Pozzazz into it.
00:40:54
Speaker 2: Right.
00:40:54
Speaker 3: He won't to answer why he does it either.
00:40:57
Speaker 1: It's beautiful and you are correct. Usually it's like there was no one around where you had to come tour. But okay, yeah, all right. Lastly, you are the pride of Pike High School? Am I right in?
00:41:06
Speaker 7: Now?
00:41:06
Speaker 1: Absolutely correct? What year for the Red Devil? I'm O two? Are you in that Pike Hall of Fame? You know I am. I was gonna say, if Laura Steel's in there, you've got to be.
00:41:14
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:41:14
Speaker 1: I came a couple of years after Lord shout out the lawyer, h O two, so that would have been And I'm totally going off the top of my head. I'm getta guess that you bridged Chris Thomas and Justin Cage, right.
00:41:26
Speaker 6: Absolutely, Justin's like my little bro. So I got there in ninety nine. I think that was after we wanted They wanted Chip in ninety eight. I came ninety nine. Chris was still there. I think he was leaving the next year. Yeah, because he was a senior, my fresh he was mister basketball, right yep. So I was there for that season. Then Justin Parnell, Robert Vaden, Courtney Lee got you then, right, No, he was there when I was there. Him and my little brother played together. So they want to state championship the year I was gone.
00:41:52
Speaker 1: This is what I always say for parents of young kids playing basketball. The Courtney Lee example is the perfect one. If you can hit a mid jumper and you're a good teammate, you can last a long time in the NBA and period.
00:42:05
Speaker 6: Like and I don't think people understood how how good Bro really was. Like Daryl was a really small kid that had a great growth spurt, and when he grew he understood it and the met range game was perfect.
00:42:17
Speaker 1: And from the NBA standpoint, he and each one more as well from Purdue are two guys that I thought played probably to extended by even two to three years by simply being a solid teammate and just a rely on it guy. Speaking of teammates, I guess that's what we are technically, because we are we're in the same building. But I'll let you go. We can get ready for your show because there is plenty of drake that you got to play today, A lot of drake. All right, I appreciate you getting at three o'clock. That'll be swift. You can hear over on our sister station, bounce back and forth tween he and John. Of course. All right, we'll come back. Pat Knight joining us about fifteen minutes. Pat Knight coming up just under ten minutes from now.
00:42:54
Speaker 3: You should send him the picture he sent you last time we had him on the show.
00:43:00
Speaker 1: Oh, he sent me another picture. We'll have to ask him about it. He now has a life size Elvis down in his man cave.
00:43:07
Speaker 3: That's not the picture I was talking about.
00:43:09
Speaker 1: Speaking of a rotund Right, the NFL Draft is upcoming, and we touched on this briefly yesterday.
00:43:18
Speaker 3: Two weeks from tomorrow or yeah, two.
00:43:23
Speaker 1: Weeks from tomorrow, is that? Yeah? Two weeks from right, Yeah, that's right. That means just a week after Peter Brady. Okay, I can't tell you how I have to call him sick. Oh listen, if we can, if I can ask him about you know.
00:43:41
Speaker 3: But I'm not on the Mark Dyton PTO plan, so I don't know if episode.
00:43:46
Speaker 1: But we briefly touched on this yesterday. And I don't recall, Eddie. The circumstances as to why Trevor Lawrence was not at the NFL Draft when he was the number one overall election.
00:44:00
Speaker 3: I don't remember either. It might be just a Fernanda Mendoza kind of thing as well, where he just wanted to be around friends and family.
00:44:07
Speaker 1: Right, but Mendoza making that announcement or you know, yesterday the news coming out that he will not be at the NFL Draft, despite the fact that he most certainly is going to be. I think at this point it's a done deal, right, the number one pick. I'm like, we all know that. And I was talking last night about and Eddie, I will in rope you into this conversation. I mentioned Eric that I took to the game last night. He had a very good one on this, and that is what current quarterback or past, but what established quarterback that we now have seen the full body of work or have an idea of the body of work. What quarterback is the floor and what quarterback is the ceiling. For Fernanda Mendoza, I think.
00:44:56
Speaker 3: The floor is coincidentally the guy he's going to be learning from, correct, not being Kirk Cousins, Right, Yeah. And the more I thought about it, I was like, it makes sense as to why Vegas would want Kirk Cousins in there because he's got familiarity with the offense because of his time with Clinton. Now clintor is a Gary. I always get them confused. I think it's Gary.
00:45:27
Speaker 1: No, I think it's Clint.
00:45:28
Speaker 3: Okay, see exactly, Kubiak just say yeah with Kubiak. So that's good. It'll it will help Fernando for sure. I know Fernando has been working out with a guy who worked really, really close with Kyle Shanahan in the early stages of the development of the of the new West Coast offense. That's kind of sweeping the NFL with either you're in the McVeigh system or the Shanahan tree. And it's a similar version of the West Coast. So but the ceiling, I don't I don't know what the ceiling would be.
00:46:04
Speaker 1: I think he okay, I think floor Daniel Jones, I think, and that's not a bad thing. I think, you know, Daniel Jones has mobility. You can you can extend plays with him or utilize his legs to open things up or soften a defense a bit. But he also has ability to accurately throw, like on the run, that kind of thing. But I think Mendoza already once he knows the system and is protected, I think he's he's right there around the level of what we've seen from Daniel Jones, which is a high compliment to Mendoza. Not a knock on Jones talking about somebody coming right out. I actually think Cousins is good, but I think that ceiling is the wrong. I think Cousins is not given enough credit for as good as he is could Mendoza be. And I know this guy's almost blasphemous to say. In Indianapolis, but pre the wheels coming off and pre really bad injuries, Carson.
00:47:14
Speaker 3: Wentz, I see a lot of Drake May.
00:47:19
Speaker 1: That's that's pretty good, and the accuracy that's good. Yeah, Drake May is really good. Yeah, of course we don't know yet. What you know is Drake May long term the guy, or is Drake May for that matter, Carson Wentz where he comes out of the womb and looks outstanding, and then once he hits that wall, he hits it. You know what I mean. But I the thing that I go back to Mendoza. Here is a player that played enough at the University of California to graduate from school, to then go as a graduate transfer to Indiana University, to start every game at Indiana, to go sixteen to zero, to win the Heisman Trophy, to lead two different drives, to save games after getting punched in the mouth, to have another game in the Big Ten Championship where you play the totality of the game after on the first drive getting punched in the mouth, to winning all of that, to going into the College Football Playoff, to winning in the Rose Bowl, to winning in the Peach Bowl, to winning in the National Championship game. All of that, and yet the Raiders are willing to spend twenty million guaranteed for a year to get him somebody to bridge the handoff to him and let him learn behind it. But the Colts drafted a player who had started fewer games in the totality of his college career than Mendoza played at Indiana, and even then had a subpark completion percentage, and yet handed him the keys, pulled the ripcord, and let him go as a rookie. I'm not saying that you have to do it the Raiders way, but it's interesting that with as prepared as Mendoza, seemingly Mendoza has more experience coming out of college than you could potentially ask, or the maximum that you could ask, I guess I should say, And yet even with that, it shows how challenging it must be to immediately take over the reins in the National Football League. The seventy six Indiana team was honored at halftime of the National championship game between Connecticut and Michigan. Bob Knight was represented by his son, Pat, who presented something to every player on the seventy six roster. Pat joins us next. I think the most exciting thing since we last talked with Pat Knight. The most exciting thing that I mean being able to represent his father at halftime of the Nationtional championship game and be with the members of the last undefeated team in college basketball, the seventy six users is obviously pretty hard to top. But having a lifetime Elvis, I don't know if you'd call it a statue or whatever you would call it down in the Pat knight Man Cave might top that. Actually, he joins us now in the program. Is it a is it an Elvis statue, a doll, a caricature? What would you describe that you have that's terrifying people in your basement?
00:50:32
Speaker 8: Well, it's all it's not my basement. It's actually over my Kiki bar above my garage.
00:50:36
Speaker 2: It's uh. I mean, all I did was Google.
00:50:39
Speaker 8: I googled life size Elvis statues, so that's what came up. So that's what it's got to be, a life size Elvis statue.
00:50:46
Speaker 1: And how was this delivered? Was this like the guy in a Christmas story where a big truck showed up and it was a major award you had unboxed. I'm how exactly did that work out?
00:50:56
Speaker 2: Huge Creighton box.
00:50:57
Speaker 8: I had a Callwayne at one to eight hundred junk to come and get that out after.
00:51:03
Speaker 2: I got it.
00:51:03
Speaker 8: But I'm used to it because I have my place in Florida and I think I have four life sized pirates and they come in the same crate deal.
00:51:13
Speaker 2: So I'm used to having to get rid of the big crate and all that stuff.
00:51:17
Speaker 3: Are you a VIP member?
00:51:21
Speaker 2: No, but I get a good price.
00:51:26
Speaker 1: I love that.
00:51:26
Speaker 2: Right.
00:51:27
Speaker 1: Okay, let's get to this in terms of the halftime, you know, the honoring of the nineteen seventy six team, and you know, fifty years since the last undefeated team in college basketball. How much interaction pat have you had with that particular group. I would assume some guys more than others living in Bloomington, But was that the first time really that you had seen all of those guys together in one event?
00:51:52
Speaker 2: Oh my yes, yeah, not since seventy six. That whole group.
00:51:59
Speaker 8: You know, you know, they've gotten together with my dad in the past and everything. But you know, I went, They're my dad's guys. It's not like I went to those things. And so, yeah, honestly, that whole group together since I was a little kid going to practice in nineteen seventy six.
00:52:14
Speaker 1: How much do you remember or recount of that because you would have been what five, right, you know something? How much recollection do you have of it?
00:52:25
Speaker 2: Yeah?
00:52:25
Speaker 8: I have a lot, because you know, I went allowed to go to the games until the next year, and just because you know, my dad's a little worried about me running around, and so I watched all the games on TV. But I was at a Semit hall every day at practice, and those guys, I mean they stuffed me in garbage cans, the laundry basket. I mean I was just all over that place with those guys, and it was kind of neat. You know, remember some of the guys, even rich Vala Vicious that you know, transferred after a year. He was really he was so nice to me. You know, he was a freshman playing with me and everything, and just seeing him, you know, hadn't seen him since he transferred, you know, the next year, and so you know, I got a lot of good memories just hanging out in the locker room with those guys and just you know, being a kid just playing around the court.
00:53:13
Speaker 1: What was it that was presented to each team member? Was it rings that were presented to each of the members of the team on Monday night.
00:53:23
Speaker 8: Yeah, they actually had a new championship rings made and then on the inside it talks about it being the fiftieth anniversary of their accomplishment, and I mean really nice job what they did, I mean first class. And you know Indiana did the same thing at the Oregon game what I went down to. But those rings were from going undefeated two years in a row in the Big Ten and seventy five and seventy six, and so these guys now have received two rings, I think.
00:53:57
Speaker 2: In the last three months.
00:54:00
Speaker 1: When you look Pat at the Pat Knight as our guest, that seventy five team, you know, the seventy six team obviously, you know, will forever be talked about. And the seventy five team as well was truly remarkable. And the loss to Kentucky in the regional final, and you know, I mean everybody knows the story that Scott may broke his arm, and you know, you had great players on that team, Leskowski and Steve Green as well, might have been and told at full health the better of the two teams. Crazy as that is to say, but how much do you think it still ate at your dad or did it? The fact that they were beaten in seventy five.
00:54:39
Speaker 2: So, I you know, it's kind of funny.
00:54:43
Speaker 8: I was talking to Tom Abernathy Iver about this. You know, i'd get my dad like deal with the Alzheimer's deal. The one thing I could get him gone if he was have one of those days was the seventy five seventy six group. And so I remember we were going through Wyoming fishing and it was early on, but he'd still have these moments, you know.
00:55:05
Speaker 2: When he kind of go quiet and went talking.
00:55:08
Speaker 8: So I just got him going about, you know, the seventy five seventy sixteen and he went on this deal about how he screwed it up. They should have won two in a row, even with Scott May being hurt. And the whole thing was he moved Leskowski into the starting lineup, and he thought it really screwed up their defensive.
00:55:31
Speaker 2: Assignments.
00:55:32
Speaker 8: And he talked about that he should have put Abernathy in the starting lineup, kept last coming off the bench, because he was like, you know, you have a starter that's a big time scorer coming off the bench. And he goes on this whole deal. I mean he's getting mad, like he is punching the car, like just mad at himself, like, you know, I screwed this up. We should want two in a row. If I would have moved lads into the kept laz as the sixth man, and because it screwed up our defense and it screwed up our offense, and so he calls Bob Hamil.
00:56:12
Speaker 2: He's like, get Hams on the phone.
00:56:14
Speaker 8: So I'm driving, So I put him on speaker bone and he starts going, you know, talking to Hammel about it, and mister Hamil didn't really help things. He was like, yeah, Bob, that probably would have been a better thing kept last coming off the bench because we would have had that scoring punch. And then with Aver because when he moved lass and it changed to Bobby Wilkerson would dard. So it kind of changed the matchups and it was hilarious and so he got even more mad. And so that just galled at him, like you know, coach with such perfectionists. I mean, he always blamed husself that they didn't win two in a row just because of the lineup changes that he made after Scott got injured.
00:56:53
Speaker 1: What was the I guess in your in your father's journey with that pat what what was the the one story or player or memory or moment that you felt like your father held onto them with the most clarity for the longest amount of time, and my apologies for asking it in that way.
00:57:12
Speaker 8: No, no, just you know, really just talking to the guys before the season, you know, because.
00:57:18
Speaker 2: He put the pressure on him.
00:57:19
Speaker 8: They weren't they weren't talking about having another good year. I mean he pretty much told him it'd be.
00:57:27
Speaker 2: A failed season.
00:57:28
Speaker 8: They didn't win the national championship, and just how those guys responded to it, like, I mean, that's a lot of pressure.
00:57:35
Speaker 2: I mean, you know, and.
00:57:36
Speaker 8: Coaching, Yeah, we all dream about winning a national championship, but it's actually be like, hey, this will be a down year, a failed year if you don't win.
00:57:45
Speaker 2: The whole thing after what happened the year before.
00:57:47
Speaker 8: And then he always just talked about how those guys responded.
00:57:51
Speaker 2: I mean, it didn't affect those guys.
00:57:52
Speaker 8: Those guys were tough, and you know he and he stayed on them, and you know that's what those guys were talking about during this year union. You know, he stayed on him and they were able to take it.
00:58:02
Speaker 2: None of them back down.
00:58:04
Speaker 8: I mean, but he always talked about like their first meeting, I mean, he put that on them. I mean, just right away, if you don't win the national championship you failed.
00:58:14
Speaker 1: Do you feel Pat Knight is my guest here, when you think about your dad's career, Pat, do you think that he was more driven by his desire to win or his hatred.
00:58:24
Speaker 8: Of losing, hatred of losing, because he'd win and be in the worst mood ever.
00:58:31
Speaker 2: I mean it was his hatred of losing.
00:58:36
Speaker 8: And yeah, because there are many times we won games, but you know they didn't play well, they didn't. I mean there was an instant at Texas Tech. We just beat a ranked team at home, and he is pissed and he was so upset because he goes through the film we had too many made baskets off the dribble and set off the cut. I mean, he was furious, and you know, I'm trying to help things out, like, hey, the game's changed, you know we you know, we've added the ball screen. But he was such a perfectionist and wanted things done the right way that he wasn't happy every time we won and losing. His hatred of losing was far ten times, and it was the enjoyment of winning.
00:59:22
Speaker 1: You know, you mentioned the game has changed. Pat Knight my guest, and we're right now, you know, we're forty eight hours into the transfer portal. I talked about it earlier. There's some three thousand players on the portal. Patt It's the reality of college basketball. My one concern with it is this, is this going to jeopardize I understand players, and I'm all for players doing what's best in their situation. Like I mentioned, I was to four schools in college. But having said that, are we at risk of losing the fan base because it's going to be harder and harder for fans to follow players and be familiar with their own roster.
01:00:02
Speaker 8: I think it's already happened. I mean, there's so many people I run into that are like, I don't follow college basketball anymore. And because I don't know who's on the rosters, there's no loyalty to the program. They're just mercenaries, hired guns. And you know, the guy's probably done the best job of keeping guys because he's and.
01:00:20
Speaker 2: I know for a fact, because you know I know him and.
01:00:24
Speaker 8: His assistants and been to their practices to really harp on him about, Hey, do you want to be a mercenary or do you want to leave a legacy and always have a place to come back to as the home has been Matt Painter. He's been able to keep core guys and probably done the best job of it. But I've already seen, you know, I talked to some people that didn't even watch the NCAA tournament because they don't care, just because it's totally changed, and you're dead on it's just going to keep getting worse, I think from a fan standpoint, and people going to start tuning it out, you know, And that's happened with the NBA too because of the style play.
01:01:01
Speaker 2: I mean, you run in a lot of people that.
01:01:04
Speaker 8: Don't even watch the NBA anymore, and now it's starting to trickle down to the college game.
01:01:09
Speaker 1: Speaking of the NBA, what is I just noticed this recently, and maybe it's some phenomenon that I that I'm late to the party on recognizing. But when you look at scores now, and I know the game is cyclical, the pat we're seeing scores in the one hundred and forties to all, you know, one forty five to one thirty and things like that. Is it because we're at that point in the year where you know, some some people are resting out starters and therefore it's just kind of you know, going through the motions level games. Or is it that shooters are so great in the league or defense is so bad to what do you attribute it? You've been around the NBA obviously a long time.
01:01:44
Speaker 8: Well, Number one is the defensive rules. You know, there's no hand checking, you can't be on the helpline. You got to you know, be outside the laying. There's a lot of rules they put in place to up the scoring. So that hurts from the beginning. That's why when I was scouting, the main thing was can you guard your position because there is going to be there's no help. I mean, you got to be able to guard a guy one on one. And that's why a lot of people don't understand that they have defensive rules in place to open up the floor.
01:02:15
Speaker 2: So there are those driving gaps.
01:02:17
Speaker 8: You don't have that help big help man in the middle clogging things up and so and then you're getting the best athletes.
01:02:24
Speaker 2: You don't have. You know, college, you have guys like.
01:02:26
Speaker 8: Me and you on the on the team you know, not an NBA. I mean you got it's all the premier athletes, and so the rules affected. But then like you're saying, now we got the team's tanking, we got the guys resting for the playoffs. And so the last probably three to four weeks of the season get pretty bad when it comes from uh scoring situation, where with the defensive rules in place, you have a lot of high scores.
01:02:57
Speaker 1: You know, you sell yourself short. You were the CBS Chevrolet Player of the Game once in a college basketball game, were you not?
01:03:05
Speaker 8: Yeah, because that gives to somebody who got blown up by Minnesota. And my dad put me in with those four freshmen, and uh, I ended up giving.
01:03:14
Speaker 2: That award away. That's how much it meant to me.
01:03:19
Speaker 1: Player of the game, Baby, you lost by fifty, right, isn't that right?
01:03:23
Speaker 2: Oh? At least he was brutal.
01:03:25
Speaker 8: I remember at halftime he's like, hey, call this cut.
01:03:28
Speaker 2: Hey, I went five guys.
01:03:30
Speaker 8: Well, you know I got cleaned up of but five guys in there are going to give an affort.
01:03:34
Speaker 2: So Pat, it's you picked four freshmen.
01:03:37
Speaker 8: It's like, oh, it was so bad Clem Haskins. Because coach Haskins actually recruited me to.
01:03:42
Speaker 2: Go to Minnesota.
01:03:43
Speaker 8: Every time I came down the court, he kept apologizing to.
01:03:46
Speaker 2: Tell me, and he kept going pat. I can't put anybody else in the game. Man, I'm sucker.
01:03:50
Speaker 1: That is beautiful, beautiful. Well, hey, listen, you didn't keep the hat. Didn't you get a hat for Player of the game.
01:03:57
Speaker 2: No, I got to I got I got plaque. I gave it to day Buca.
01:04:02
Speaker 8: Do you remember Buka I gave to Dave Buca.
01:04:06
Speaker 1: Okay, don't you wish you had it back now that it looks good with your elvis statue?
01:04:11
Speaker 2: No, man, I want to forget that game. Man.
01:04:14
Speaker 1: That's fair, that's fair. That's definitely fair. Hey, I'm curious of this. Also, I've watched a fair amount recently and I don't even know how it happened, but I mentioned that the other day I was talking on the show that somehow I mentioned with I ended up with like forty seven apps on my cable system. So I've got you know, I can see like all kinds of stuff sports wise everywhere, Like I'm watching batch you Ball and Bangladesh and all kinds of stuff, And I'm seeing more of the European like top level European basketball leagues. How close is that to the NBA? I mean, how how how thin is the margin or is it still a huge gap between top level European League and NBA.
01:04:54
Speaker 8: You know, when you combine those teams, there's still a gap, you know because athlete meticism and their rules. They don't have the defensive rules that the NBA has so you can calog up the lane and everything and so those But where.
01:05:10
Speaker 2: It is the gap.
01:05:11
Speaker 8: Has closed is the international teams. So for the Olympics and all the international competition, when it's the countries, that's where you see.
01:05:21
Speaker 2: I mean it is a thin margin.
01:05:23
Speaker 8: There's a good documentary about the the Paris Olympics in twenty four and it covers not just the US team, but all you know, Australia, Germany, Spain, all the good teams, and it really shows you the margin for air now for the US team is very thin when you.
01:05:42
Speaker 2: Get the best players together.
01:05:44
Speaker 8: But you know, I still think you could put you know, the Pacers, Lakers, anybody over in the European League and they, you know, they they'd win pretty handily because you know, it's they don't have all the best players on those teams. And actually I think our rosters compared to you know, you know Real Madrid or somebody like that, it's an NBA team would beat them pretty handily, and we do, you know, if you look at the scores, because the NBA is playing those games over there against some of those teams, they went pretty handedly. But it's the international competition like Olympics at pan Am Games, that's where they're making. I mean, it's a thin margin of mayor.
01:06:27
Speaker 1: Now for that, how much do you watch still the Pacers? I know, obviously you were For those that don't know, Pat Knight, you were an employee of the Pacers. You then coached at Marion. You are between positions. Now we'll see what the next step is. But how much do you still follow what the Pacers are doing?
01:06:44
Speaker 2: Oh?
01:06:44
Speaker 8: A lot all the time, you know, because they're my friends and you know, the front office and everything.
01:06:48
Speaker 2: So I follow them and.
01:06:51
Speaker 8: Went to the first couple of games when the season started, and whenever they they're on, you know, we turn it on and watch it. So yeah, I'm still following because I know all the guys know the roster.
01:07:02
Speaker 1: This season must have been the best, and I know it's been a bad year for the Pacers just in turn, you know, I mean, everybody knows the story there, but in terms of progression, and taking a step this year has most benefited what member of the Pacers.
01:07:17
Speaker 8: Roster, well, really just all the younger guys, not just one guy. All the guys are getting playing time now because you gonna get Halbert Beck.
01:07:28
Speaker 2: They just made the trade, the big trade and so but the problem.
01:07:34
Speaker 8: Is, you know a lot of the guys you're hoping to get, you know more out of it, been hurt. But it's just any of the younger guys that were role players. And also what it helps too, no one talks about that kind of brings their value up is also trade bait. So you got guys that are putting up numbers that nobody really knew about. You know, if you don't have room for him on your team next year when you get everybody healthy and hopefully we get one of the top four picks because you know, if it gets below the Clippers get it. But now you've added value to some guys that didn't have value that it's not going to you know, be on your roster. You can actually get something for them. So it kind of works that the younger guys, role players that are going to still be part team, get playing time, get experienced, and then some guys that won't be around.
01:08:20
Speaker 2: They got plenty of time, they have.
01:08:22
Speaker 8: Added value and actually and it helps them too because now they're going to get a nice contract from you know, another team.
01:08:28
Speaker 1: Boozer DEBONSA Peterson Caleb Wilson of North Carolina. Of those four, which one do you find to be the most intriguing prospect?
01:08:38
Speaker 2: The kids from Yudy.
01:08:41
Speaker 8: Crown's name, Yeah, yeah, for me by far. You know, they're all very talented, but there's some questions, you know, I think for me from the kids from Kansas, dealing with not playing in all the games and people around them, you know, but very bal I mean, and you can't you really can't get away with that stuff in the NBA. You know, it's not it's in high school or college. We're paying you know, the NBA don't mess around either player. You don't or you get cut. So it'll be a little different. I think people see Peterson playing a lot more minutes in the NBA because you just can't have you know, an agent or somebody come tell the coaching staff, you know, he's sitting out the second half.
01:09:25
Speaker 1: Lastly, Pat, you know, and I for those that don't know, you are very close friends with Ryan Carr, who is now back at Indiana University. We've had him on the show. Obviously. Ryan was a member of the Pacer staff now at IU, helping Darren DeVries in terms of the orchestration and the building the construction of that roster. And you know, for you and I know that you had said all the people that were there at Indiana when things did not go as had planned with you and your dad at Indiana, those people are all gone now, right, But I I still think of, you know, as simply as simply all has to feel like home to you. I mean, it still has to feel like that is that's kind of the house you grew up in. Does it now feel like indeed that bridge is completely once again repaired where it is again home?
01:10:19
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, most definitely, And.
01:10:23
Speaker 8: Not just because Ryan's there, But I mean, you know, you get to point like just too old for that stuff. You know, there's no sense bickering and life is short. And then on the other hand, I really like, you know, because I really hadn't paid attention to the teams, I went down to the Oregon game they honored the seventy sixth team. I really like the style of play coach debris played. I mean, it's the modern version. He's got shooters and once they get you know, some inside help, I mean, people are going to be really excited. But you know, he got the job late, had a piece together, a whole roster, and so but I really like what he's done. And so that's even made it more fun for not just myself, but you know for some you know, some of my teammates I've talked to and everything and so and now we have Ryan there and you know, I talked to him yesterday, and those guys, they've been busy already, you know, dealing with that portal and setting up visits and and everything. And so I just think, you know, most people, I know how the fans are as instant coffee situation, but just be a little patient, and I think they'll really like the product they put on because they have a year underneath their belt. Know what, the Big ten, what it, you know, it takes to compete there, And now they got Ryan Carr to help him out. And so I think looking forward to, you know, a really good year next year. And I and I think I thought they were fun to watch this year, but I think it's just going to be a better team altogether next year to watch Pat.
01:11:52
Speaker 3: Do you know about the plans on when they are going to have your father's statue built and where it'll be or when the debut will off that statue will be.
01:12:02
Speaker 8: Just yet, It's take a while because I actually got uh some uh what would you call it, uh clay version or whatever?
01:12:15
Speaker 1: The mold and the mold.
01:12:18
Speaker 8: Yeah, let's say, let's say they need to do a lot of change.
01:12:22
Speaker 1: So did they have been wearing a sport code or a sweater?
01:12:27
Speaker 8: It was a sport coat. Uh no, tie. Yeah, there's some things. Man, this is say two thousands. I offered my bibbleheads I've had made I thought looked better, and I offered I could get I'll check with my bibblehead guy, and I could get a life size one day.
01:12:45
Speaker 1: You know, you know you might be able to buy it from that same place you bought the life size Elvis. Right, did you use your discount, use your frequent discount?
01:12:53
Speaker 8: Right? But no, my bibblehead guy, because we went through the same process with the bibbleheads. I mean just getting it right. You know, you gotta get the face, you gotta get the features, and so I'm you know, I'm heavily involved in it because this guy look right.
01:13:07
Speaker 2: So let's just say the first rendering I'm not a fan of. So he's got to be plenty of times.
01:13:15
Speaker 1: It's got to be him standing where he used to put his left hand in his right hand, like like he was teaching, you know what I'm talking about, How he would stand up and like have his hands out in front of him. That's got to be the pose, right, That's what I want.
01:13:27
Speaker 8: But you know you put a pose. Uh, you know, let's just say theoretically he was holding a program in his hand. He's never held appropriate.
01:13:38
Speaker 1: John Wooden stuff there. That's John Wooden right.
01:13:40
Speaker 8: Exactly, yes, and coach heated that or having a ball underneath his arm, you know. So, But just so everybody knows, you know, because I owe my dad's in il, right, so I have the authority to kabash it.
01:13:55
Speaker 2: I'll make sure it's right.
01:13:57
Speaker 1: And it will be where will it be placed once it's done? Where it be placed?
01:14:02
Speaker 2: Well, now there's.
01:14:02
Speaker 8: An art you know people have talked about, you know inside where all the other statues are, and there's a group of players that and people that like it. Outside you know, so you can always you know, see it before you get inside. And so they're still trying to figure that out. I'm just trying to make sure it looks good and then you know, they can figure out where they want to put it. But let's just say it's not it's going to be a little while because you've got to make sure you got to do it right, right, Yeah, yeah, Because well my comment was, if you guys seen Happy Go More.
01:14:38
Speaker 3: Too, Yeah, I haven't seen it, sober you.
01:14:42
Speaker 2: Remember his bus?
01:14:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's okay for Ronaldo Ronaldo's yeah, yeah, So I'll leave I'll.
01:14:51
Speaker 2: Leave it to day all right.
01:14:52
Speaker 1: Well, listen, they can put the Bod Knight statue inside Cook Hall or you know, inside the Assembly Hall, and then the Pat Knight statue goes outside and for of Jackson Heights. That's the compromise.
01:15:02
Speaker 8: There you go, No, I want I want Kilroy sportsbark.
01:15:08
Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, that's that's legendary enough Jay and B's told us about that. All right, we'll leave it at that.
01:15:14
Speaker 8: On a stool, just on a stool like Norman the one end, just on a stool.
01:15:18
Speaker 1: All right, fair enough, all right, Pat, by the way, what are you back working again.
01:15:22
Speaker 8: Do we know yet, LB July, that's when all the NBA doesn't hire him.
01:15:27
Speaker 2: But I actually got a gig this week.
01:15:29
Speaker 8: I'm a consult for an AI company that, uh it's gonna cut down film like by hundreds of hours.
01:15:38
Speaker 2: You just honest, guy.
01:15:40
Speaker 8: These guys showed me this deal and they need somebody to help them open doors for them. And so I got a consultant deal with them and on the side, and I mean it's the most amazing thing. You just look at the computer and say, I want you know, let's say, I want the five best plays against Yukon's pick and roll, and I'm not lying. Within a minute, here comes the video of praise.
01:16:01
Speaker 1: I believe, Yeah it is.
01:16:04
Speaker 8: But yeah, July, hopefully all right, we'll.
01:16:08
Speaker 1: Have you on before then. All right, guys, all right, appreciate it Pat Night joining us on the program. We come back more into what he was just talking about, as a matter of fact, and that is.
01:16:26
Speaker 3: I think that's the first time we've had Pat on that I haven't had to hit the dumb up.
01:16:30
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. Good point. He caught himself there, right, He twice caught himself. Pat's maturing in his older age. TV numbers say one thing, opinion says another. On college basketball, we'll explain that dichotomy next. Speaking of by the way, exactly that month, even though he's saying me right there. For those that are interested, it will be coming up on I believe the twenty seventh the first airing of Beyond the Bricks Mike Thompson and I thank you Eddie getting back into the mix of doing Beyond the Bricks, getting those recorded, getting those some of them will be live, of course, but we have a number of different of course, Mike has a huge collection of audio over the course of the Indianapolis five hundred and its history that has never aired. And this year excited about the fact that we have Ritchie Murray, who is the fabulous pr Rep for USAK, facilitated for some new audio of a lot of the victory banquet speeches and acceptance speeches from Indianapolis five hundred drivers of the early to mid sixties that wow, has kind of been buried from yesteryear, and so we'll hear some of those. I think Jim Hurdaby's may be one of the first ones that we feature in that regard, but look forward to doing beyond the bricks again, coming up up here in the Monday of May. And that is the sound that we will hear before you know it. And I look forward to all of it, of course, and everything that goes in with the world's Greatest race. Pat mentioned and we've talked about with the transfer portal, and I certainly understand this. I think the first time that I really was keen or aware of this school of thought was in nineteen eighty six, Danny Manning was on the cover of Sports Illustrated and there was a big article about him. Matter of fact, Danny Manning was somewhat on the radar already to people around here, even though by eighty six he was, you know, a legit All American candidate as a sophomore at Kansas. But a great trivia question was the fact that back in those times, Manning was already kind of on the radar for Indiana fans before even he had played at KU. Because Danny Manning and del Ray Brooks were the only two high school players that were invited to try out for the eighty four Olympic team that was coached by Bob Knight. And so the fact that del Ray Brooks who was from Michigan City, was the mister basketball and was down there at the Olympic Trials. Everybody in Indiana was aware of that, and then Manning, by association was on the radar. So I was familiar with Danny Manning, but I remember him being on the cover of Sports Illustrated and he was a sophomore at KU and at that time I remember thinking to myself, how good is this guy going to be by the time he's a senior. Well, pretty good because he not only was the number one player selected in the eighty eight draft, in which, by the way, in the final Pacers game the season before, I was interviewed on Channel thirteen as a fan by saying that I hope the Pacers actually would not so that they would have a chance at the number one selection for in the draft with well, it wasn't the last game, but it was towards the end of the year and I was being interviewed and I said, no, I want them to get the number one pick so they can get Danny Manning out of Kansas. They ended up with Rick Smiths, who might have been a better pro over the course of time than Manning, but the thought and the anticipation of what would be of Danny Manning, who would go on to win at eighty eight, and those things of knowing and prognosticating and forecasting what players would be a couple of years out, or seeing a player as a senior or as a junior that had been on the map for a while, and the anticipation and the development of piece by piece and seeing teams come together over the course of time. Those were part of what made college basketball so special through the eighties, nineties, twenty you know, twenty twenty tens, and et cetera. Once you got into the era then of the one or two and done, that went away obviously, and you know you have a team like a Jared Jefferies has an unbelievable year and goes pro after a sophomore year, or Glenn Robinson has the most dominant year I've ever seen in college basketball and goes pro after his junior year, which at that time, even that you know, in today's day, he would have been gone after one year if he'd even gone to college. You have to go for a year, I realized. But he was the prop forty eight back when that existed. But you get my point, and so there is the thought of the portal is going to hurt college basketball as we know it because of the fact that what you're losing out on is that ability and that excitement and that anticipation. And back in those days, of course, you also had four year players at the mid majors which were creating the Cinderella stories, the ball State to the Sweet sixth, the Cornell and the Sweet sixteen, the David's into the Elite Eight, and those scenarios are becoming fewer and further between, and March Madness is a little more sane in terms of the expectation of what teams are winning. And we can sit here and you and myself and Eddie and anybody else can sit here and jump up down and say that's hurting college basketball, but the numbers say otherwise. The Elite Eight broadcast averaged ten point three million viewers per game, a nine percent increase from a year ago. The Yukon Duke game. When Braylan Mullins hit that shot, roughly nineteen people were watching it. Nineteen million people were watching it.
01:23:00
Speaker 3: I'd say I was one in nineteen people, right.
01:23:02
Speaker 1: Nineteen million people were watching it. Those are staggering numbers, and the reality is that we say, and we long for, and we desire the Saint Peter's trying to knock off North Carolina game, or the ball State hanging with UNLV game, or Butler balancing out Michigan State. But the research indicates that people still are drawn to Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, Yukon. Now, of course, part of that is because those are familiar brands, and as perhaps the Portal and nil dilot down and the consistency of those brands, maybe over time that also has the effect that we pretend is happening right now of diminished television ratings. But as of right now, the numbers don't back up the theory.
01:24:16
Speaker 3: I don't think the TV ratings are going to go down, Jake, because last year and this year, once you got to like the Sweet sixteen, Elite eight, Final four, you were getting the best teams against the best teams, and I think that's what everyone wants to see. They want to see the Cinderella, they want to see the Furman, they want to see high points get to the Sweet sixteen, and that's it. You want to see them get to there. You don't want to see them get any further, because then they're going to run into a duke, they'll run into a Connecticut and they'll get absolutely waxed. And then the game just becomes boring and you turn it off and you go outside, if it's a nice weather day, try to get some right, you know, later on your fertilizer or whatever. But you want to you want to see the truest of the blue blads in the powerhouse programs going at it in the sweet sixteen the ilyinate the final four to the championship. I don't think we're going to get a championship like it was. Is that five years ago, three four years ago, where it's eight seeded Yukon and nine seeded San Diego State, right like those days are over.
01:25:31
Speaker 1: It feels that way, and it does feel like whenever those teams get to the you know the Danny and the Miracles eighty eight Kansas team, when those higher seed teams, larger numbered seed teams get to the final four on occasion LSU and eighty six, you know that Kansas team had just mentioned to your point. You know, San Diego State, Florida Atlantic teams like that when they get there more often than not that becomes their ceiling. I mean the eighty eight Kansas team kind of the exception. By the way, Yes, I know. Del Ray Brooks was a co mister basketball with Troy Lewis, who was the better player of the two and had the better career, and my favorite Purdue player of all time not named Glenn Robinson, who was unbelievable to watch.
01:26:14
Speaker 3: Within the last area. Found a couple of players into the portal Jake yesterday.
01:26:17
Speaker 1: It was a hang on, can you hang on to it? Yeah, hang on to it. Let me think about it and see if I can tell you who it is. I'll try it next. Here's the easiest way to say it. Half the players you know of are in the portal. True now Butler and Ronald Norid is of course building a new roster at Butler. They got another commitment here. Oh yeah. As a matter of fact, this just did. We could even probably list this as breaking news. Eddie, do you happen to have the breaking news happen? Brazilian national and old Miss shooting guard Eduardo klothgay I did leave them saying that, correct? Oh you said, Edward o'clofk not EDWARDO. Garrison Okay, that's right. Edwardo Klofka commits to Butler. He is a forty four percent three point shooter and is now a Bulldog six' five sophomore, or in the words Of Chuck crab sophomore six' five sophomore average four point, six points two point five rebounds per game last Year At ole miss and is Now A. Butler bulldog there are numerous players that are in and it is easier to simply list which players we know. ARE not, i, mean Like in, Indiana's Case trent sisley, is returning we. Know that in the Case, Of perdue obermeyer. Is back we Know That.
01:27:46

01:28:22
Speaker 3: Robert right the THIRD from byu as a guy that was a Third Team All big twelve selection last year AS a i think he was.
01:28:29
Speaker 1: A freshman, he improves but that by one team does he become the second.
01:28:34
Speaker 3: That's a, good question that's a. Great question he averaged eighteen points in five fourign, half assists shot forty from three. Last year he'll be up there in terms of one of the top guards available in the. Transfer, Portal, yesterday jake we learned about and there's some other international GUYS that i don't know how to say their. LAST names i, don't know going to give it. A try One from duke Is, a ford Another from nebraska that was a.
01:28:59
Speaker 1: Four word.
01:29:02
Speaker 3: But yesterday we learned about the human anatomy a little bit when we're examining The ny drew report from The, the pacers and we learned it's. Not sacral, it's, Sacral.
01:29:11
Speaker 1: Right yeah? That's right or is it the important, You, know no it's it's definitely.
01:29:14
Speaker 2: The.
01:29:14
Speaker 1: Sacral, sacral, yeah sacral, Not sacral it's not there is it's a. Sacral, contusion yes which is a part of the. Coc, sicks, okay, uh jizzle we're Learning About gisel. James Today the cincinnati bearcout son of Vegri and james is in the. Transfer portal he's actually a pretty, good player by, the Way from cincinnati average eleven points, last year shot forty four percent beyond the oc the is That Your new york accent that You're Using.
01:29:42
Speaker 3: Eddie white drops and every now and then on the okay and then other transfer, Port, News jake this Is From jeff goodman about an, Hour ago Kansas big Man, From. Cocomo Indiana floria, Badunga's LIST.
01:29:58
Speaker 1: Oh, i, guess yes how many, schools, one, two three?
01:30:04
Speaker 2: And?
01:30:05
Speaker 1: Four okay and those make up how many? Different? Conferences. Three okay i'm going to say the List For, floria BADUNGA who i think may ENTER The, Nba draft but we shall see if there is transfer portal. Stuff here i'm going to go with school. Number one i'm going to say that he is Interested. In michigan You mean michigan is interested? In him this is his list or the list of who's reached out. To him This is i'm, Assuming, both okay but so, you're saying According To, jeff goodman this is the list of schools that it's down To For. Floria, berdunga okay and there, are four, Right four michigan is one.
01:30:48
Speaker 7: Of.
01:30:48
Speaker 1: THEM okay i will say Then That michigan state is on. The list i'm actually going to say that kans is on. The, List no i'll Say The fighting Hoosiers. Of, indiana no that. Surprises me there are, four teams. Three conferences you have three teams two. Conferences left michigan is The only big ten team on this List From. Jeff goodman and you said there's, three conferences, three conferences only have. Two, Left okay so obviously that takes the suspense out. Of It if indiana is not one of Them and purdue is, not either then? Right, Yep okay so at that point we're Just but I'll say, Alabama, no okay, go ahead and.
01:31:35
Speaker 3: You've got two in the acc do you want to get you want to guess before, it turn.
01:31:40
Speaker 1: Go and Throw It north carolina into, the mix not The tar. Heels, Rival, okay duke that.
01:31:47
Speaker 2: Is.
01:31:47
Speaker 3: Correct okay do you know who my Only friend alec is a. Fan of he's actually going on a visit There With jackson Shelstad of oregon together to, this school to. THIS school i don't know when, it IS but i know it. Is soon is It a marquee?
01:32:02
Speaker 1: Basketball, Program Yeah, florida State, no miami, all right hit Me, louis, okay. YEAH yea i should have, done that and then.
01:32:16
Speaker 3: The fifth Team on.
01:32:19
Speaker 1: Florrie's list, RIGHT now i still have a hard time Thinking of louisville and THE, a sec as odd as that sounds, to say out Of The, Big, east Syracuse, no yukhon No, vill Nova, no butler no hit Me.
01:32:35
Speaker 3: The, Johnny's Okay So, Derek Michigan, saint Johns.
01:32:39
Speaker 1: AND louisville i Thought For florida badunga That that indiana certainly would be in. THAT conversation i think there was A lot there were a lot, of people still are a lot. Of People and i'm not saying that he, won't be But that Haroldson and badunga are two That most indiana fans look towards, and, thought man, you know we would love to see.
01:32:57
Speaker 3: THEM there i don't think you can Rule Out marcus. BURTON either i believe that was. The Name zach.
01:33:02
Speaker 1: Ostterman tossed out there during the conversation with Him on monday Or two monday on, this show as he Lobbied That marcus burton could be another one to be keeping your an eye On.
01:33:13
Speaker 3: With indiana and you have to wonder how much of this is money related and how much are those schools offering Him that indiana may not be willing.
01:33:23
Speaker 1: To, OFFER well i would think money related in the Case of badonga a, huge amount because you can go TO. THE nba i mean he WOULD be i think at, This Point floria badunga is probably a high twenties early thirties, draft pick and that, you know then you straddle between guaranteed money and non. Guaranteed money, but nonetheless you could certainly use that against a college program that is bringing you in, and, says hey you want to. Come here, you know we'll give you five. Hundred grand five. HUNDRED grand i can go play for the main red clar law as to make seven.
01:34:00
Speaker 3: To, fifty yeah he's getting if he stays, in college it'll be around three to, four, million.
01:34:05
Speaker 1: Totally, No question That's what. I'M saying, i mean five. HUNDRED gred i threw a, low number but you Get what i'm saying you can, you know and again that how much of? THAT money i think the thing that is the most intriguing at, this, point yeap is you are going to now. Get players we want to talk. About How and i'm not sitting here as. SOME listen i don't want it to. Be misunderstood i'm not jumping him down as like, some big huge proponent of the portal and nil and. All that but at, this point the toothpaste is out of. The tube we're past the POINT of, i mean you remember the original thing this. All began this all began Because of ed O'Bannon and a video game, and saying wait, a, minute ea sports is profiting off, my name, my image or, my likeness and that began a long court battle before eventually what happened was the courts decided THAT the ncaa could not prohibit a player from financially gaining off of, their name, their image or. Their likeness, and initially when that decision, came down the, thought was and it's a, cute narrative it's cute of us that we, thought this but there were really people, that, thought oh well this. Is fine that means that this Is fine all that means is that they Can Put little johnny's jersey in the bookstore and he Can Take little sally out for pizza and dinner twice, a week or he can do an ad for the local barbershop and get a. Free, haircut well then of course it turned into WELL and i Can't remember eddie will have to look, this UP and i should, know THIS and i totally APOLOGIZE that i forget. THE name i, always do but it is a, Local Player, Nigel Pack, nigel pack. Thank you you got four hundred grand to Go To miami and what in, The, world well that was Because in indiana was ahead. Of everybody indiana football Is where indiana football Is Because indiana athletics saw before everybody else what happens when you can do your own collectives and have your own gathered resource with that independently then or like as a, third party you could facilitate the payment of players where you the university are not directly, paying them but you have the collective that is doing it. For you and they were way ahead of everybody else, on this and That's why. Indiana football once They, got signetti it, was, like okay they completely flipped, their roster and They, got mendoza, for example and they were ahead of the game and they, basketball wise because they made a, coaching change it. Hurt them but now, they have like we Mentioned With, ryan carr like a general manager to go through and look at the roster and figure out who's going to who they, can get and who they can pay and. Whatever else so it's Not that i'm sitting here jumping up and down saying this is the greatest. Thing ever but this is where. We are it's the reality. Of it and you're either gonna sink you're gonna swim if you don't get. On board and that's the era of where we ARE with nil and the, transfer portal and there are ups and downs and yins and yangs of what it can do to bolster and or detract from the. Game itself but it is my FEELING that nil actually opens up and reveals the hypocrisy in all. Of Us and i'm as guilty. As Anybody and i'll REHASH what i was talking about on the, other side and something up coming in the sports calendar that you people go. Crazy over we'll get into that. As well by, the way haven't gotten into, this yet but maybe, should have because one thing we know is That the patriots are not the most loved Franchise. In indianapolis maybe it's not, football related but it's been a rough Week For. Mike brabel do you, See? THIS eddie i think it's Rougher For. Diana russini now why? Is, that well are you Familiar With, Diana? RUSSINI jake I mean i am now because of the Situation With, Mike brabel but enlighten me on why this field it's worse.
01:38:54
Speaker 3: For her this isn't the first time she's been accused of having a relationship with somebody in a position of power WITHIN. The nfl.
01:39:07
Speaker 1: So this allegation Is That mike Rabel And diana rossini are is it on a vacation or in they were spotted on a Resort somewhere and.
01:39:17
Speaker 3: They were spotted at an adult only Resort in arizona two, weeks ago and they were, caught hugging, interlocking fingers, holding hands ye laying next to each other at, the pool sitting next to each other in a. Hot tub that claimed that they were each there with a group. Of friends rabel said he was with a group of. Three guys she said she was with a group of like, six girls but according to people from, page six there was no groups of friends there. And attendance it appeared it was just the two of. Them together this would have been a week prior TO The nfl, Owners.
01:39:55
Speaker 1: Meetings and now it just it's coming out of, the, woodwork right people like pulling up old interviews that, were done like all the how how much they, get along.
01:40:08
Speaker 3: Et cetera, uh, huh yeah. But uh ten eleven, years ago she was accused by the wife of the then general manager Of The washington Redskins Now washington commanders of inappropriate acts that led to her getting pieces of information that other reporters were. Not getting and then his wife retracted her statement. And apologized.
01:40:39
Speaker 1: And you're saying this now leads credence to. That, retroactively yeah it's a it's just another thing on the resume or that doesn't look good.
01:40:48
Speaker 3: For her, you know.
01:40:50
Speaker 1: She, is currently by, the WAY an nfl reporter For. The, Athletic, correctly.
01:40:56
Speaker 3: Yeah she's THE senior nfl insider For.
01:40:59
Speaker 1: The, athletic yes Obviously On sunday COUNTDOWN And. Nfl live. Uh huh the transfer portal is open. For business we just talked about that in going over the players that are, in It and i'm going to go back TO what i. Said earlier when it comes to the, TRANSFER portal i have to be realistic about. This fact it would be probably easy and expected of me to sit here and critique players that are going into the portal, the, name, image likeness the money that's involved and shred, the credibility the passion and all of that. Of PLAYERS and i think that sometimes when you turn on, the radio you hear people that take the alternate opinion because it's the easy thing, to do or it's the shocking thing, to do, and frankly it's the lazy thing.
01:42:17
Speaker 2: To do.
01:42:20
Speaker 1: Now you can turn on the radio and hear that. A lot i actually Hear, in indie probably one less time than you used to be. Able to but but that laziness, To me i've always tried not to. Do that that's not to SAY that i don't err from time, to time but the, POINT being. I DON'T if i have an opinion that goes against, the grain it's Not because i'm doing it with Intention of it's not you're creating a shock. And awe it's not my. STICK correct i take pride in one of the great compliments that any, broadcaster gets not. Just me it's not isolated, to ME but i truly take it. To Heart when i'm talking to somebody and, they, say man you sound just like you do on, the Radio and, i'm like it's because this is EXACTLY who.
01:43:14
Speaker 3: I am that's the humility and You, Jak no.
01:43:17
Speaker 1: I'm not, saying THAT but, i, mean like. IT'S not, i, mean yeah But what i'm Saying, is eddie it's not a character nobody at this. RADIO station I mean i See obviously john all, THE time I see kevin all. THE time I see Boyd and ricker all, the time and. We're all that's ONE thing i THINK that i really like about what we do here is it's just who. We are we just go on the air and it's who. WE are i don't try to, portray ANYTHING but i am here to admit that. There is.
01:43:50
Speaker 2: TO me.
01:43:52
Speaker 1: I recognized what would have been a hypocrisy about myself when it comes to the portal and. The nil and let. ME explain i go back TO when i was. A kid i knew where every driveway in my neighborhood was with a, basketball backboard and they were still to, THIS day i drive through my parents' old neighborhood and. It's amazing it kind of makes me sad because all of the backboards that you see above a garage or in the driveway. Are faded the nets, look old the rims aren't, His orange they're bent a, little bit the wood is. Dried out, i'm, like man do kids not do the backboard in the? Driveway ANYMORE but i guess they're all playing. Travel BALL but. I played i don't even know how MANY hours i spent in the driveway. SHOOTING hoops I mean i did it all, day LONG and i dreamed of Playing. FOR indiana i dreamed of Playing For. BOB knight i hit ten thousand baseline jump shots in the driveway THINKING that I Was. Randy whitman at halftime of the eighties one, TITLE game i hit five hundred thousand shots from the top of the key and, the DRIVEWAY thinking I Was. Jay Edwards, AGAINST michigan i hit seventeen hundred driving LAYUPS that i pulled up to fire from three feet away and let it roll in, just RIGHT pretending I Was steve Alfred at michigan and it goes. WITHOUT saying i can't tell you how MANY times i faked to, the right took one step to, the left and shot a baseline jump shot from the left, hand side because that was what we saw when You. Watched indiana and that didn't make me unique. At all There Was chris bell across the street. From me his parents had a perfect basketball court in, the Backyard perfect Chris And. Greg Bell chris bell had never. Beat HIM crap I Played chris bell in twenty One and horace and everything else ten. Thousand times he's ten thousand. AND zero i never. Beat him it's two years ahead of Me. At Cathedral But chris bell WAS a. Prewf fan he shot a million shots thinking that He Was troy Lewis Or steven Scheffler Or jim rowinski's what happens when you grow Up. In indiana and the other thing that happens is that you assume that all of the players that are afforded the opportunity to play at those schools that you dreamed, of playing that you acted out in, your driveway that they would hold to it at the same dear level within their heart that. You did and now you're, an adult and instead of dreaming of playing for, those schools you're happy about the fact that you've got the booster money and the season ticket money and the nil collective donation to make it possible for other kids now to have the opportunity to fulfill the dream that eluded you of playing at. That school and so for that reason you assume and you expect that those players will have the same passion about that school and understand the privilege that has bestowed upon them that. Escaped you so there is a standard you hold them to where you can't possibly fathom that they wouldn't dream of playing four years and get the chance to cut down the nets wearing the jersey of the school that you, grew up doing anything you could every time you blew out the candles of your, birthday cake wishing that you in fact could Play Inside, assembly hall Or, inside maccerine Or Inside, hincklefield house or Inside The Joyce Athletic. Convention center and it would be easy for me to sit here, And say i've got to papoo all these guys for not understanding and for taking for granted and walking away from what it was that the rest of us would dream we. Could do except, FOR this i couldn't Go. TO indiana I knew i couldn't Go. TO indiana i applied to three schools my senior or. High school with my two point two grade point average and my four hundred and eighty second. CLASS rank i did have high, test SCORES but i applied to. THREE schools i Applied To ball state because they had a good program in radio. And TELEVISION and i Applied to Alabama and kansas BECAUSE when i Went to beatalton bookseller and bought the Book of College, AND universities i took. A ruler i wedged it down the right hand side of that book SO that i had the power to lift the seventy five percent on the left side of the book that were the highly competitive and competitive and somewhat competitive in terms of. Academic ADMISSIONS and i flung that thing over to the right hand side, and said, all right what schools are? Least competitive who's going to let? Me IN and i myself in POSITION where i KNEW academically i was not going to get Admitted. To INDIANA so i Went, to KANSAS and i thought that'd be right.
01:49:07
Speaker 2: For me.
01:49:09
Speaker 1: LOOKED, like iu Sounded like iu played Basketball, like Iu, not iu and deep down at, My core iu IS where i wanted.
01:49:18
Speaker 4: To be.
01:49:20
Speaker 1: AND so i. WAS miserable i, WAS homesick i, WAS immature i. WAS arrogant, i know, it's shocking and it didn't, go WELL and i had to come home and pick up the pieces and go To to iepui and then ultimately Transferred, to INDIANA where i didn't even FINISH because i still had hours LEFT when i went into. The workplace and two and a half, YEARS ago i went back and finished my degree online, technically speaking portaled through the online computer System Of Indiana. University kokomo, so Technically what i'm getting, at is over the course of my, COLLEGE career i attended, four UNIVERSITIES and i transferred from one to the NEXT because i was in seek of the situation that was best.
01:50:09
Speaker 2: FOR me.
01:50:11
Speaker 1: I had to find the situation that allowed me the, comfort level, the confidence and the ability to better myself by being in the. Right environment AND therefore, i TRANSFERRED and i, transferred AGAIN and i transferred again and then finished. Somewhere else and no ONE when i tell, that story, no One and. I'd admired if, THEY did i wouldn't be offended. AT all i wouldn't be offended at all at all that, people said maybe you should have mind your p's and q's to, begin with and you wouldn't have had to go that. Circuitous, route true but no one. Says that what everyone, says, is man that. Is awesome that is awesome that. You finished and what an inspiring story. Of perseverance what an inspiring story. Of perseverance and throughout my school years when that was all, TAKING place i had plenty, of friends as we all. Did THAT when i was shooting hoops in the BACKYARD and i was playing twenty ONE and i was in, the driveway there were GUYS that i. Played Against josh shimrow grew up right down the street, from me played a ton of Sports With. Josh shimrow, One Day josh shimrow came home, and said. We're moving. You're, moving yep. We're moving where are you Moving, To? Memphis tennessee why are you Moving, To? Memphis tennessee my dad got a job that pays a little, bit, More OKAY and i didn't think anything, of it nor did. Anybody else because In the, american culture people are willing to uproot their entire family moved their kids out. Of school why is it that houses are suddenly for sale everywhere in the Month of may in the Month. Of, june well it's because people get an opportunity to move to a. New place they wait until the kids are out, of school and then they're uprooting the family and. They're moving and they got to do it because mom or dad got a raise of eight grand, fifteen grand. Two percent rais got to uproot. The family and we don't think anything, Of That and i'd never thought anything. Of it SO when i began to think that it was selfish of college basketball players to transfer from one school to the next to find a situation that was better, FOR them i realized that to indict that was to indict myself and, be hypocritical because at the TIME that i did it and went, through it it was what was best. For ME maybe i didn't even know it at. The time AND when i hear people talk about how they're fatigued by players transferring and changing schools all, THE time i now realize that that is culturally and for all of us on a, societal, standpoint hypocritical because most, of us when it comes to just being a. Normal student applaud that we. Champion it we find, it inspiring we find it to be commendable that you realize and recognized that a situation wasn't what was best, for you which takes us to the money side, of it and the money side of it SAYS that i can sit there and say all, Day, long Yeah but i'm so offended that this guy's leaving just because another school is going to pay him two and a. Grand MORE but i didn't think That When josh simmraw's dad uprooted his entire family and moved three. States over because that's What. In america you applaud when people put themselves in a better position to improve. Their lifestyle jeff joins us two, or nine, Ten, seventy jeff what's?
01:54:07
Speaker 7: Going, ON well i hope while you're applauding that you can applaud the this is this is kind of what free agency did TO. The NBA the nba, RATINGS down nba, ATTENDANCE down nba, worth down.
01:54:27
Speaker 4: And it's all because of.
01:54:28
Speaker 7: Free agency free agency, killed baseball and free agency KILLED, the nba.
01:54:35
Speaker 4: And it will kill.
01:54:36
Speaker 7: College basketball they've tried to turn college sports into semi pro sports and it will.
01:54:44
Speaker 1: Not, last jeff youre. NUMBER one i don't disagree, With, YOU okay i.
01:54:48
Speaker 9: Hear.
01:54:49
Speaker 1: YOU yep i don't think they're trying to. DO that i think that the toothpastees out of the tube and they can't. Control it that's, number. ONE right i don't THINK anybody's i don't THINK the ncaa, is, saying hey let's become semi. Pro ball happened the free market enterprise Of The united states and capitalism, in general with all of us having the individual right to improve our positioning is what?
01:55:08
Speaker 2: Did?
01:55:09
Speaker 1: That right? Number two so? What happened?
01:55:11
Speaker 7: What happened what happened When j billis stood up and said we need more scoring in, college basketball and they tried to change all the rules to make it more LIKE.
01:55:21
Speaker 4: The nba now we're gonna.
01:55:23
Speaker 7: Let, guys travel we're gonna let guys set, Illegal screens we're going to not call a.
01:55:27
Speaker 1: Basketball game that's that's how. You said that's all. You said you said it was because of the. Free agency i'm saying it's, both okay And what, I'm, Saying jeff i'm not fundamentally disagreeing, with you but here's, the thing. The rate the television ratings this year FOR The ncaa tournament were up nine percent from a year ago and are among the highest that have ever.
01:55:49
Speaker 7: Been, presented absolutely let's let's talk to me in five years and let's see where.
01:55:54
Speaker 1: It's at so. THAT'S fair i hear, you there because we are just at the outset. OF it i, get that and that is certainly the. One, Thing, now jeff let me ask. You this you're a fan of? What? Program?
01:56:05
Speaker 8: Uh?
01:56:06
Speaker 4: NONE really I mean I like purdue a.
01:56:07
Speaker 1: LITTLE bit i like you see a.
01:56:08
Speaker 7: LITTLE bit I refereed division one college basketball for, twenty YEARS and i look at it from the. Referee side, Number one this Isn't. BAD john i don't know if you Know Who john, adams is, of Course But john adams would be rolling around in his grave with how bad these games. Are offficiate it's LIKE a. Wwe event it's not. BASKETBALL anymore i.
01:56:29
Speaker 8: Get it.
01:56:30
Speaker 7: I'm sixty i'm that old guy that wants things to be the way they used. TO be i also understand, there's evolution but they RUINED the nba has got the. Best athletes they ruin those that game because it's, not, officiated like let me ask a.
01:56:44
Speaker 1: Game and then they want to know why their ratings. Are down let me ask. You this it'll happen TO the.
01:56:47
Speaker 2: Ncaaa.
01:56:48
Speaker 4: Too ja i'm telling you, Right.
01:56:49
Speaker 1: Now i'm not disagreeing, With, you jeff but let me ask. You this And what i'm saying to you is the reason why. People play if you want to say it's because you don't like the enforcement of rules or you feel like the game has gotten away from what, it was Especially in indiana that we value and. HOLD close i, hear. THAT right i don't think you're. Wrong there BUT THE nba i went last night to an arena to a team that had more people in thousands last night than they do wins. This year there, Were literally i'll bet you there were seventeen thousand people last Night At Gambridge field house To Watch micah Potter And ethan thompson try to shut Down the timberwolves that did Not Have anthony edwards on. The floor now for?
01:57:34
Speaker 7: What reason how many tickets were sold before before the season of last year was over that they had to turn in their. SEASON tickets i don't know the answer to. That, question well and then what are the tickets going for the cheap tickets going for. THESE days, I mean i get what, you're saying but there's if you look back at like in the Nineties when duke had those guys that were there for, four years or some of these teams that the majority of our players stayed there for, four years everybody had a little bit of an allegiance to. The team and also. College basketball so la last year you had all four number ones go To the. Final four this year you had two number ones and a two and. A three, i mean people love to see. The, Underdog yeah but here's. The Thing, but jeff if you, GO back i don't. Just listen i'm. NOT disagreeing, I mean i'm not disagreeing with your. Point, Here okay i'm simply pointing Out and i'm as bewildered as you. By this but if you look At the cinderellas that, everybody loves, myself included and of course and you, heard me you probably if you listen to the, show enough you've heard me Say that march madness is made on, those. STORIES right, i mean it's those one shining moments that we. Long For The bryce, drew shot all those, Things right but there is no denying the fact that When A saint peter's Or a davidson goes deep into, the tournament the numbers and the interest levels lag because people tune in To see david, You know Goliath, Versus. GOLIATH right, i mean that's just the reality. Of it WHETHER that's i can't explain why, that is but that is the reality of the of where we and what we.
01:59:10
Speaker 1: Are now i'm not disagreeing with you that the trajectory that college basketball is headed may in fact be a huge threat to the popularity of. The Game what i'm saying is my only point is the basis by which people claim to lose that interest is one that if you apply it to other areas, of society they are things that.
01:59:33
Speaker 7: We, applaud yeah but people aren't going to your dad's or your next. Door neighbors dads were To. Watching MOORK so i get where you're. COMING from. I do it's just a different thing when people are, being ENTERTAINED and I think i think they're making a. Big mistake i've said this ABOUT the nba. FOR years i told a buddy, of mine NBA's audience is going to, go south, and.
01:59:54
Speaker 4: Sure enough it's.
01:59:55
Speaker 7: Gone south people just don't number one the target all it's are probably fifty plus year old guys that grew up. WITH basketball i don't know if the younger generation is.
02:00:05
Speaker 1: THAT much i don't think that's. Accurate basketball, He, DOESN'T jeff i don't think. THAT'S accurate i appreciate. THE call i don't think the target audience, OF yes i mean expendable income. IT is i. Get that but the target audience for anything is starting at the age of twenty five right because. You can you can start a business right now if. You'd like that does nothing but attract sixty year, old men and, guess what you're gonna have to recycle that.
02:00:29
Speaker 3: Pretty quickly jenna alf for my two cents on the on the thing that you say that, makes, us uh what?
02:00:35
Speaker 4: Was?
02:00:35
Speaker 3: It, hypocritical, Hypocritical hypocritical sorry that your next Door neighbor jake is working for, that job to get, that promotion to get. The money some of these players in, college athletics they're not working to get. The promotion they're chasing. The money they're going around school to school chasing. That money most people in the real world are not going job to job to job to job to, chase money because after the third place that you've been in the last, three years an employer is, gonna, say okay So why i'm gonna contact, this one this one and. This one why do you keep leaving one employer?
02:01:19
Speaker 1: One reason what's the number one reason people? Job, transfer well it's for, More. Money jacob but you're working. Towards that most people are working towards the promotion to get to the next job to make. The money you did all the work that you Did at, channel six to put in the all all the extensive hours to build yourself up for that. Next job right these players in college basketball aren't. Doing that they're Going from indiana to wherever else that's going to offer them a bigger bag so they can just get. More money they're not working. For anything they're just. Chasing it but if somebody they're not chasing it because they don't. HAVE to, i mean there are those. That are But what i'm saying, is no your value is what is determined by your. Market value there are two values. In life one is the way you, value yourself and everybody should value themselves to a. High level the other value is the, market value which is what the market dictates. Your worth and, so if just through natural progression, of inflation for lack of a, better phrase the market value of, yourself increases then it is behoove you if you so choose to take advantage of that increase to get what is there for you while, it's there because you also have keep, in Mind in, jeff's case people aren't going to the guy's workplace to watch. Him, work true but he, also has, you know a thirty year period to take whatever raise has come his way over. Thirty years, in athletics a lot of, these players they have a four year window to cash it in to get. The money i'm. Not LISTENING like, I said i. Totally understand i'm not disagreeing with the threat that is there by any means or stretch of. The Imagination but i'm saying the reasoning that people give as to why it perturbs them are oftentimes rooted in the combination of envy or the lack of understanding of why someone doesn't have the same appreciation of opportunity that they would have claimed to have had if given the same at. That age. That's. All now the other thing that people are gaga OVER and i get it Is. The masters masters. Is huge we're gonna whisper for the. Next Segment will haskett's going to. Join us we're not really going, to whisper but we are going to. Talk golf we're gonna do.
02:03:49
Speaker 2: IT next.
02:03:51
Speaker 1: I feel like that was too loud that re. ENTRY there I know Will hask we'll have all of your coverage when it comes To, the MASTERS and I owe will, a, huge huge huge gift basket now he joins us on, the program other than loaning us your time and expertise when it comes. To, golf well would you like to guess and if you know, the answer reveal to the audience why it IS that i owe you a huge. Thank you maybe they have not informed you yet of this. LITTLE tidbit I think i'm aware.
02:04:26
Speaker 9: OF it i was hoping we just come on and we can Break down jeff's, phone CALL because I feel i Feel where jeff was. Coming from but sometimes reality doesn't line up with. Our hearts Can maybe i'll be able to, Address, that jake for the reason that, you're suggesting WHICH is i guess that you've been awarded four day work weeks at, the Company and i'm going to be in that chair a Week.
02:04:48
Speaker 4: FROM monday, I, think.
02:04:49
Speaker 1: Jeff you have no idea how livid It makes jeff to, know that, IN fact i have negotiated this into MY. New nil right before we get, to that can you elabor rate on your if, you could kind of your Dissection of jeff's. Phone, CALL yeah i.
02:05:06
Speaker 9: Get It like I'm a butler grad and the magic Of what butler has done to grow its basketball brand was being the little. Scrappy underdog and, you know my senior year was The first sweet sixteen trip in two thousand, and three and then obviously there were the trips that. Went THERE and i think that the beauty of, college sports that the beauty OF the ncaa, tournament is you know those stories, four year five year athletes that stay out of school and the little underdogs that.
02:05:36
Speaker 4: Make the first and second day of. The tournament you know what.
02:05:39
Speaker 9: It is but the reality, is that, you know the average general sporting public wants to see the best against, the best AND.
02:05:47
Speaker 4: The tv ratings.
02:05:48
Speaker 9: Don't lie and even though old sensibilities for me would love To See george mason the final Four or butler in the, final four when for one. Final four it's better business for all those treating it as.
02:06:00
Speaker 4: A business and that's just the reality of.
02:06:03
Speaker 9: It all and that's why until we get some sort of guardrails on the current state of really pay for play in, college athletics we're not GOING to, i think have a solution in the short term that keeps teams from just being able to go out and assemble the best talent year in and, year out to try and be one of those one.
02:06:20
Speaker 1: Things, you know will somebody made a point TO me i should have, said this because this is the best way of. Saying it if you are a student and you're given a sixty percent scholarship to go to, a university more often, than not if nobody else gives you, a scholarship that's where you're going. To school and then if midway through your freshman year you have an unbelievable four point zero, you know, semester whatever some other school hears about it and then come and they say we're going to give you an eighty. PERCENT, scholarship yea guess what you're by transferring right and. Then etc it's. Very similar, but, anyway yes one week from now you ARE in i Believe. On Monday so i'm going To The IndyCar Long, beach RACE and i come back on a red eye that gets In. On monday and just, In particular i'll be honest, With, you will just the way air travel is, RIGHT now i always get leary, of THAT and, i thought you, know WHAT should i just take the day just to. Be SAFE so i do appreciate you filling in for me. On that and that's the weekend At The Long. BEACH race i don't know if you've heard this, Or, not WILL but i get to go To The Brady bunch House With christopher knight That Played, peter BRADY and i haven't SLEPT since i learned.
02:07:24
Speaker 4: That news that's a That's an. AMERICAN flight i do believe That. RED eye i was.
02:07:29
Speaker 9: On it you're LEAVING the i was on and After The jennis Imitational at riviera earlier this YEAR on pg to.
02:07:35
Speaker 4: A RADIO so i know that red.
02:07:36
Speaker 9: Eye, flight well, and yes brain function is about sixty percent when you, get back which you know maybe for me match you're sixty percent brain OUTPUT when i fill in for three hours coming up a Week.
02:07:47
Speaker 1: From, MONDAY well i. Appreciate it, All right let's get To, the masters and this is going to obviously be a peripheral observation as opposed to an, esoteric ONE but i think at least as, of now and it will change once we really get, Into it but for, right now it seems like the story At the masters is as much who's not there versus, who is which. Is, Unfortunate, CORRECT.
02:08:13
Speaker 9: Yeah I mean i think the Story really masters this year is that there isn't necessarily, a story if that. Makes sense, you know It was reckler was playing great. Last year could he Win The grand slam or Complete The? Grand slam? He Did scotty scheffler best Player since tiger the last couple of years two.
02:08:30
Speaker 4: Years ago could he win? It again?
02:08:32
Speaker 9: He did year, Before That john. Rahm wins but that was kind of when the whole split was happening and there were live golfers there for The first there was always some sort of overarching story or individual PRESENCE that i think has really dominated all of the headlines leading into.
02:08:48
Speaker 4: This week and the.
02:08:50
Speaker 9: Reality is that We're celebrating rory a year, from it but he's not the same player in terms of his form as he was a. Year Ago scottie scheffler's now a father for the second time and hasn't play his best golf over the last couple, of months so he's not necessarily, YOU know i Thought the scheffler Versus the field discussion like we've had the last couple of, Years either so it really opens it up to whichever way you want, to look whichever direction you want.
02:09:13
Speaker 4: To take that's the story that you're going to sort of invent.
02:09:16
Speaker 9: For yourself and, you know these weeks are always. Major weeks just feel like there's one, extra day there's one too many days of hyperbole. And hype and thankfully that there's a part of three contest going on right now so you, can watch, you know cute kids hitting golf shots and guys laughing and really just kind of exhaling before the tournament. Begins TOMORROW but i always Feel like Wednesdays of, Major week, i'm like can we just please give it the first tea Time?
02:09:36
Speaker 4: On thursday we need some real golf to.
02:09:38
Speaker 1: Talk, about, well obviously we know in a great part of, you know in a wide number of things that Makes the masters what it is is the course Itself And, augusta national and that course does, Not move it doesn't change it's in the same spot. Every year for the, most part the weather is virtually the same same time of year. Every YEAR but i know, in RACING and i have pol for making this bad. Comparison good but, in racing sometimes we go to a track that is the same track that we were at the, year before same time, of year but things have changed over the course of, the year and the track has a different grip or a, different feel and the drivers just noticed. Something Different Does augusta is it literally the same course every year or are there times where different elements can perhaps change just a little bit the way the ball is running and advantage to one player.
02:10:26
Speaker 9: Over, ANOTHER yeah i wouldn't necessarily how much it, shifts advantage but there are always. Subtle, changes now we haven't had any wholesale changes like we've had in, previous years like brand new, tea boxes so.
02:10:38
Speaker 4: People know the thirteenth hole is a is a.
02:10:42
Speaker 9: Par five it wraps around raised creek on the second nine There.
02:10:46
Speaker 4: At augusta it's one of the most famous holes.
02:10:48
Speaker 9: In golf and they added a new tea box there a few, years ago and that's been much. Talked about, in fact the chairman Of the Masters fred ridley answered a question about it earlier today about the data they get from that and how it relates to their opinion on whether the golf balls should go farther, or shorter which is a very esoteric conversation for golf nerds.
02:11:04
Speaker 4: Out there BUT so i wouldn't say this year there's those. Many CHANGES but i.
02:11:08
Speaker 9: Will say if you really kind of geek out, Every year augusta isn't going to tell you where some of the changes.
02:11:14
Speaker 4: May be made, on greens like did they bring in completely.
02:11:16
Speaker 9: New turf or redo a, Particular green and a lot of guys out earlier this, week said you, know what it, feels like these three or four holes may have gotten redone in the. Last year not change necessarily in terms, of slope it's very similar to how it. Was before but when you put in, new grass it typically acts firmer for the first year until it really settles in and it. Grows roots so players pay attention. To that those are the. Subtle changes but because everybody knows it, so well it goes from player to caddy to broadcaster, to fan, you know it's you have to do some real significant change. TO it i think to have an impact on how you view it and how you. Play it but there's always little things that the players are, looking for, you know stand level.
02:11:57
Speaker 4: And bunkers, you know it's typical mode about.
02:12:00
Speaker 9: The same it's one of the, most pristine if not the most pristinely maintained golf course in the. Entire world so this year we aren't dealing as much with anything that was an overhaul as much as we are guys maybe looking for a little bit of information that may benefit them on a shot or.
02:12:15
Speaker 4: A moment over seventy two.
02:12:16
Speaker 1: Holes will when you look at the way everyone is playing, right now is there someone that jumps out at you as, You're saying, you know they may not be somebody that is a top the leader board on, the regular but it seems like right now things are starting to fall into place for them where they could be somebody.
02:12:34
Speaker 4: To, WATCH yeah, I mean.
02:12:36
Speaker 9: I think when you come in, to majors especially the way golf is, right now this has become a, really superstar top heavy sport and.
02:12:43
Speaker 4: You're talking about a half.
02:12:44
Speaker 9: Dozen guys maybe one or two of those guys roll in each and, every year but for the last five, or years especially, in Majors, It's Rory, it's Scottie it's John Rob it's Bryson, De shambeau and the latter two of those guys are obviously playing on live and they're playing better than the other two.
02:12:58
Speaker 4: At this point.
02:12:59
Speaker 9: In time Won Twice john rams in a playoff against bryceon and one of those he's also won. This year they're both playing very well entering, this week albeit they played twelve time, zones away and so it doesn't register as Much within american golf and. Sports audience so when you have a couple of, superstar guys, you know major champions that you know are capable of winning these types, of events then you certainly your ears peak a. Little bit the OTHER guy i throw into that is a two time major Champion In, xander schoffeli who won those two majors back to back two years ago and then a rib injury really just slowed him down last year and he was never able to get. Into it while he has not punched it through this year this, calendar year he did win last fall Over in japan and has had a couple of top five finishes in.
02:13:41
Speaker 4: His last couple. Of starts so OF The pga.
02:13:43
Speaker 9: TOUR guys I think xander's in the best position because he's always been a guy that finds himself in position Late on sunday in. A major so those are the Three guys i've been sort of saying that are big.
02:13:53
Speaker 4: Name guys there's certainly a number of.
02:13:54
Speaker 9: Guys that would considered a little bit more long shots who have played very well. Of Late cameron young's the number three ranks in, the world which, right now if you walked into a trivia night at, a bar no one would be able to guess who the third ranked player in the, world is And It's. Cameron young he Won The. Players championship certainly guy. That's, Capable actually batilla is a HOT name i think, this week a. Younger guy he's actually, a drive chip and. Putt alumnus that would be kind of a Cool story tougusta if he were able to go on. And win and he Wonted Bay Hill arnold palmer's tournament earlier this year ON The.
02:14:23
Speaker 4: Pga tour so there's plenty of guys that are.
02:14:25
Speaker 9: Playing well but this is always one of those weeks where who of the, top guys who of the, big dogs who the major champions are playing their best. Right now and that's why it kind of goes back to.
02:14:34
Speaker 4: That three Of The Shamba, John.
02:14:36
Speaker 1: Robbins, vanderschofflin now, My man santiago de foint he's not in, this, year right he.
02:14:41
Speaker 9: Is not he was the he qualified Through The Latin America amateur championship two years ago and he is not back.
02:14:48
Speaker 2: This year.
02:14:48
Speaker 1: I'm sorry he was doing well through like three holes AND then i think he was seventeen over and got a little off. Off, kill yeah it was a.
02:14:56
Speaker 4: Trunk.
02:14:56
Speaker 3: SLAMMER yeah i kind of like jaking this show sometimes.
02:15:00
Speaker 1: Every Day, mattel pulcini that's. My guy what do?
02:15:03
Speaker 2: You?
02:15:03
Speaker 9: Think, sure yeah if you want me to expand on, His, Game jake i'm afraid we're gonna have to phone a friend.
02:15:10
Speaker 1: On, that okay you. Can listen you got like a week and a half to figure, it out and then you can do three hours on it. Coming up imagine the.
02:15:17
Speaker 9: Ratings there it'd be like having a sixteen versus the fifteen in the.
02:15:20
Speaker 4: Final game if You.
02:15:21
Speaker 1: Think jeff was upset about, RATINGS before, i mean, come, on, right okay here are my, two picks AND then i want you to tell me HOW crazy. I am i simply look. AT this i do this. EVERY year i look at it AND then i just. Go boom that one jumps out. At, me okay here The, official eddie and do you happen to have the drum roll by chance or the breaking? News sounder? Either one either one. Is, sufficient okay, Thank. You eddie here we go and you tell me HOW crazy. I Am tommy fleetwood would be one. Of them i'm Going With tommy fleetwood as. A pick AND then, i had, first off your Thoughts On. Tommy fleetwood my chance? Is there?
02:15:56
Speaker 9: Not crazy finally got in the winner circle ON The pga Tour in. America fall he's the fourth ranks player in, the world has the iron game that should.
02:16:04
Speaker 4: Contend here so that is a very very. Strong.
02:16:07
Speaker 1: Pick Okay, Matt, fitzpatrick.
02:16:10
Speaker 4: Yeah playing really well One in tampa a few.
02:16:12
Speaker 9: Weeks ago i'm worried a little bit about, his putter but certainly has. Taken stride he's a major champion, as well and might be playing the best golf of his career over the last season and a half. OR so i think he's built himself into being a more consistent. Major performer so of those those, two guys those.
02:16:27
Speaker 4: They are two.
02:16:27
Speaker 9: GOOD picks i would put THEM if i was making a list of a dozen guys outside The ones i've, already mentioned they would be on that list.
02:16:33
Speaker 1: As, well okay then here's my one, Dark Course, ryan fox ONLY because i grew up with a Kid Named. Ryan fox his mom and my mom are. Best friends not the. Same guy.
02:16:43
Speaker 9: Cool Story new zealander won twice last year in a quick time frame ON The.
02:16:47
Speaker 4: Pga tour certainly has, the power but he's.
02:16:51
Speaker 9: An almost exclusive right handed cutter of the, golf Ball and i'm not sure how much that would be a benefit to him on this. Golf course but it's really hard to see a long shot winning. This tournament we haven't really had one of those in a long time At, The masters so probably a little bit too far out with so many good players in front, of him but it'd be a fun story.
02:17:13
Speaker 1: For sure what's your favorite thing About?
02:17:15
Speaker 9: The masters by, The Way ryan fox's dad may be the greatest rugby Player In new, zealand history and that you know they're known for their, rugby player really good.
02:17:24
Speaker 4: Rugby player i'm really a little.
02:17:26
Speaker 1: BIT too i got Really into australian. Rules football by, The way i'm a huge fan Of The, north Kangaroo The North, melbourne kangaroos just so. You know but that's different. Than, rugby yeah he.
02:17:34
Speaker 4: Was, au yeah he's a superstar. Down There, SO jake i want what was. The question, i'm sorry, go ahead.
02:17:40
Speaker 1: GO ahead i was, TO.
02:17:40
Speaker 3: Say i have two PICKS and i want your. Insight, Here Uh ludwig Aberg And.
02:17:43
Speaker 9: Zander, shoffley yeah just TALK about, I mean I think xanders on my very very short list of the guys that. Will win oberg has, Played well he's. PLAYED great i was WITH all. I was i Was with ludwig all four days That The players championship and he had a multi shot lead and just kind of collapsed on the.
02:18:02
Speaker 4: Back line that's all you. Can say and now he's sort of gathering steam in that can he finish the?
02:18:09
Speaker 9: Big one which is unfair to a guy who is young as. A professional he's old as. A human he played four years of. College golf he's in his mid twenties now and he has already won a couple, of times been.
02:18:18
Speaker 4: On A ryder. Cup TEAM but i think it's an.
02:18:21
Speaker 9: Unfair question mark it's really hard to get across the finish line for guys to.
02:18:25
Speaker 4: Have leads now.
02:18:26
Speaker 9: In, professional golf we're seeing more and more how difficult it is to hold on. To LEADS so i would expect him. To contend he contended as a rookie just a couple of, Years Ago So i'm i'm pulling for him if he gets in that, position AGAIN because i don't like seeing guys because of one or two bad finishes being labeled as that, as such BECAUSE it's i think IT'S just i think it's, lazy journalism, you know to throw out the, choke word or to throw out that he, can't finish like everybody. Can't finish, you know that's the. Biggest problem Everybody's.
02:18:56
Speaker 4: Not tiger it takes a little while to figure out how. To win and once they figuregure out how, to win then it.
02:19:01
Speaker 1: Becomes easier by, The WAY will i asked your favorite thing About. THE masters i want to get to. That conclusion but while we have, YOU here i will let you know that your, Alma, mater butler just announced a new women's, Basketball Coach, maria marcazano correct A former bulldog herself that most recently coached pretty. Fort, wayne, correct.
02:19:17
Speaker 9: Correct AND as i just finished my Twenty Sixth Horizon league basketball Championship that i've covered or called and have called many Of coach marcasano's games through the last. Four YEARS so I think i put her on social media the day when they Announced That austin parkinson was not, coming BACK which i found to be a little bit of a. QUESTIONABLE decision i know the results, weren't THERE but i thought that he had at least shown the coaching prowess to earn.
02:19:41
Speaker 4: Another season but if they were going to make a.
02:19:44
Speaker 9: Change and they were going to go in, any direction, to me it was a no brainer and that she had to be the higher and she is.
02:19:50
Speaker 4: The higher so good on her and Good.
02:19:52
Speaker 1: On, butler, okay last so your favorite thing or what it is About the masters that? YOU loved.
02:19:58
Speaker 9: I think i think repetitiveness and, you know tradition is too big of a, word here, BUT familiarity i think is so important sometimes. In sports, you know why do we love THE n d. Five hundred we LOVE the d five hundred because we know what the lead up is going, to be we know the order of, the songs we know, the pageantry we know what that start. Feels like, you know why do we like sitting down on the Couch on sunday and Watching The masters.
02:20:24
Speaker 4: Because we know.
02:20:25
Speaker 9: The holes we know where the trouble is going. To BE so i know familiarity is kind of a not the most specific, of THINGS but i feel we so much in sports we're looking for the, new, Thing right we're looking for the, flashy thing and when, it works like when the brand is strong and it just gets it done all, The, TIME like i think something that is that familiar it has.
02:20:46
Speaker 4: Real power, so that.
02:20:48
Speaker 9: To me is my favorite thing About the masters IS that i can close. My eyes you can say a HOLE and i can, see it whether it's the VISION that i have from The times i've been there Or when i've seen IT. On TV and i think that's something that's kind of rare, in sports to be able to be able to close your.
02:21:01
Speaker 1: Eyes and see, that thing your coverage, of it and just overall the thoughts that you have in breaking Down the masters can be found and. Seene, WHERE yeah i got our crews.
02:21:13
Speaker 4: Down there i'm off. This week i'll be back next week FOR The.
02:21:15
Speaker 9: Rbc heritage so all my friends on serious XM's channel ninety two if you Have a master's radio this week they do a. Great job so all my buddies are down there covering it and it's a phenomenal tournament that you can follow me on. Social media, And, hey eddie let's try and Get Coach marcus ono in.
02:21:32
Speaker 4: Studio a Week. From monday that'd be a, good yeah a good. Good one let's Beget the butler on. That one If anybody butler's listening Over, at.
02:21:37
Speaker 9: Hinkle let's get her in studio on, the twentieth because she'd be worth.
02:21:40
Speaker 4: Thirty minutes.
02:21:41
Speaker 1: Love, It see i'm all. For that see will see how it worked out.
02:21:45
Speaker 9: FOR you i just, like having, you know give me the, Pulpit. HERE jake i can throw things out there and now people have to act.
02:21:52
Speaker 4: On, it right it's on, the airwaves it's. Out there then we have to.
02:21:54
Speaker 1: Do something jeff's. Online too just know that at, all times will she at the time he is always and thanks for. Filling in have fun with it all?
02:22:02
Speaker 2: Right again?
02:22:03
