Episode 170 – Prog Algorithm Mixed Bag, 2025
Algorithm Adventures: Discovering Hidden Gems in Progressive Rock
**Discovering Progressive Rock Through Unexpected Pathways**
What happens when a streaming algorithm becomes your guide through the world of progressive rock? On this episode, Joe shares his serendipitous journey that began with Haunt the Woods and spiraled into an exploration of both new and familiar prog acts (a delightful rabbit hole indeed).
The conversation reveals a common listener dilemma: when facing a band's catalog of multiple albums, which one should you choose first? One strategy discussed is starting with the second-most recent album, providing a middle ground in the band's sonic evolution. The hosts dive into recent discoveries including *Opaque* from 2020 and *Ubiquity* from 2023, while exploring artists featuring Nick Beggs and discussing the **magically twisted and cynical** music of Echolyn, a band from their hometown of Lansdale, Pennsylvania that they overlooked in their youth.
From Fernando Perdomo's ambitious 2025 project of releasing one instrumental prog album monthly to Advent Horizons' powerful *Cell to Call Home*, the episode celebrates diverse progressive rock discoveries. Ken Gregory and Paul Zotter share recommendations spanning Life Signs, Pattern Seeking Animals, and more.
Tune in to explore these hidden gems and reconnect with prog artists you may have missed.
