00:00:01.165 -->
00:00:04.046You're listening to Podcasting Made Simple.
00:00:05.046 -->
00:00:09.406You're about to be interviewed on a popular podcast with thousands of listeners.
00:00:09.406 -->
00:00:12.346You're excited and ready to share your insights.
00:00:12.346 -->
00:00:20.826But as soon as the recording starts, your audio crackles, your video lags and your message gets lost in a sea of technical difficulties.
00:00:20.826 -->
00:00:26.006Now the host is struggling, but they keep calm, try to keep the conversation flowing.
00:00:26.006 -->
00:00:29.006And you feel like you've missed an incredible opportunity.
00:00:29.006 -->
00:00:31.149This is exactly what happened to Jim.
00:00:31.149 -->
00:00:32.490a few years ago.
00:00:32.490 -->
00:00:41.310Despite having a wealth of knowledge to share, his unpreparedness as a remote guest led to a less than stellar experience.
00:00:41.310 -->
00:00:43.909Now that moment was a turning point for Jim.
00:00:43.909 -->
00:00:49.310He realized that being a great podcast guest isn't just about what you say.
00:00:49.310 -->
00:00:53.929It's about how well you present yourself, even from a distance.
00:00:54.109 -->
00:01:00.718My name is Junaid and I am the founder of Humble Zone and the creator of Home Studio Mastery.
00:01:00.718 -->
00:01:11.337With two decades of experience in video, I've dedicated my career to helping podcasters, speakers, and content creators build impressive and functional home studios.
00:01:11.337 -->
00:01:25.757Hosting the Hacks and Hobbies podcast, where I've interviewed over 600 guests and made countless guest experiences myself, that has taught me invaluable lessons on how to create a professional setup right from your home.
00:01:25.757 -->
00:01:29.293Today, I'm here to share these lessons with you.
00:01:29.293 -->
00:01:35.754And our focus is on mastering the art of being a standout remote guest on video podcasts.
00:01:35.754 -->
00:01:42.114Now in the world of podcasting, being a great guest is more than just about showing up.
00:01:42.114 -->
00:01:49.974It's about creating and engaging in memorable experience for the audience and the host, of course, that's who you're targeting.
00:01:50.174 -->
00:01:54.953And trust me, a little preparation can make all the difference.
00:01:54.953 -->
00:01:57.834So let's dive into the heart of it.
00:01:57.834 -->
00:01:59.150Your video.
00:01:59.150 -->
00:02:00.969and audio setup.
00:02:00.969 -->
00:02:06.909Now these are two critical aspects that can make or break your remote podcast experience.
00:02:06.909 -->
00:02:17.050And when you show up with excellent audio and video quality, you're not only making yourself look good, but you're also doing the host a huge favor.
00:02:17.050 -->
00:02:24.590Now they can't control your setup, but they can control whether they invite you back or recommend you to others.
00:02:24.590 -->
00:02:28.430But audio and video alone don't paint the whole picture.
00:02:28.430 -->
00:02:32.560You need to focus on these four points that I'm about to tell you.
00:02:32.560 -->
00:02:35.090Number one, audio mastery.
00:02:35.090 -->
00:02:37.490Number two, talent lighting.
00:02:37.490 -->
00:02:40.169Number three, your camera and lenses.
00:02:40.169 -->
00:02:44.669And number four, the audio treatment or room treatment.
00:02:44.669 -->
00:02:47.750Let's focus on number one, audio mastery.
00:02:47.750 -->
00:02:53.050Investing in a good quality microphone is absolutely essential.
00:02:53.050 -->
00:03:07.677Now there are a lot of different options from USB condenser microphones, USB dynamic microphone, XLR dynamic microphones, or simple audio interfaces that connect to your microphone through XLR cables.
00:03:07.677 -->
00:03:09.698There's so many different options.
00:03:09.698 -->
00:03:15.777You may be also using a wired lavalier mic connected to your laptop.
00:03:15.777 -->
00:03:22.518All of these will do a great job as long as there's no echo or audio reflection present in your audio.
00:03:22.518 -->
00:03:29.217And if you can't tell the difference between the two, believe me, the host and the audience can.
00:03:29.217 -->
00:03:32.457Here's what to avoid using for your audio.
00:03:32.457 -->
00:03:34.657Built -in laptop microphones.
00:03:34.657 -->
00:03:41.717They tend to pick up a lot of background noise, known as audio reflection, from your room.
00:03:42.057 -->
00:03:45.837Congratulations, you've opted to invest in a great microphone.
00:03:45.837 -->
00:03:49.538After all, we're all podcasters and podcast guests.
00:03:49.538 -->
00:03:52.877Make sure that you position your microphone correctly.
00:03:52.877 -->
00:04:00.102Typically, it should be between 6 to 12 inches from the speaker or your mouth.
00:04:00.102 -->
00:04:06.562That will make sure that you sound the most and most authentic way possible.
00:04:06.562 -->
00:04:16.002In fact, my audio is so sharp and tuned that people can recognize me from my voice in a room that I'm present in.
00:04:16.002 -->
00:04:18.422It actually happened a few months ago.
00:04:18.422 -->
00:05:00.449I was in this room having dinner, having conversations with these three people on the other side and this one gentleman lean back over like hey is that you Junaid did we meet in the other zoom room like few weeks ago I was like yes it is me it's like dude I just recognize you from your voice so make sure that you have these things dialed in for your audio so people can recognize you before they even see you number two we're going to focus on talent lighting and this is the most important gear aside from audio you want to make sure that people can see you in your video You want proper lighting and there are many different ways that you can light up your setup.
00:05:00.449 -->
00:05:10.769I like to focus on the talent lighting because you are the talent in the show and host has invited you to the show, not your virtual background.
00:05:10.769 -->
00:05:14.110So I like to focus on the three point lighting.
00:05:14.110 -->
00:05:20.689You want to light yourself from three different angles and points so that you're showing up more effectively.
00:05:20.689 -->
00:05:28.122When you focus on lighting yourself properly, you stand out from hundreds of other guests that have been on the show before.
00:05:28.122 -->
00:05:31.002And when people like what they see, guess what they're doing?
00:05:31.002 -->
00:05:33.791They're referring you to be on other podcasts.
00:05:33.791 -->
00:05:35.911They're referring you business.
00:05:35.911 -->
00:05:40.382They're referring you all sorts of things that you can't even imagine.
00:05:40.382 -->
00:05:43.422Now there are a few different ways to light your space.
00:05:43.422 -->
00:05:49.641Natural light from windows or artificial lighting using light panels, soft boxes, et cetera.
00:05:49.641 -->
00:05:52.750Making sure that you've got the right color temperature.
00:05:52.750 -->
00:05:57.170or the combination of the two, artificial and natural lighting.
00:05:57.170 -->
00:05:59.149Now natural light is your friend.
00:05:59.149 -->
00:06:08.689When you position yourself facing a window and then placing the camera in the middle, you show up very brightly lit.
00:06:08.689 -->
00:06:12.829But what sucks is that it's limited to daytime only.
00:06:12.829 -->
00:06:15.230Nighttime we don't have a lot of natural light coming in.
00:06:15.230 -->
00:06:19.050So you wanna make sure that you can show up at any time of the day.
00:06:19.050 -->
00:06:24.065And to help with that, I like to paint my room with light.
00:06:24.065 -->
00:06:34.605I start with a dark room and I start adding lights into the setup so that I am lighting up myself as the talent in the show.
00:06:34.605 -->
00:06:43.406So start with a dark room, start adding lights, soft boxes, light panels, ambient lighting so that you're lighting up your space correctly.
00:06:43.406 -->
00:06:50.221Some things that you want to avoid with lighting is bright lights staring right into the camera.
00:06:50.221 -->
00:06:57.002because that can take away the attention from you and distract the host and the audience.
00:06:57.002 -->
00:07:00.322Alright, we're down to point number three, camera.
00:07:00.322 -->
00:07:13.122And to ensure good video quality, you want to invest in a good quality camera, a webcam, your smartphone as a webcam, or a dedicated DSLR, or a mirrorless camera.
00:07:13.122 -->
00:07:19.041Now each stage of the camera will bring a different level of sophistication to your place.
00:07:19.041 -->
00:07:27.586Remember, Camera is a window into your home and you want to make sure that you present your best self.
00:07:27.586 -->
00:07:36.745I've been invited to so many different shows because of how clean my setup looks, because we love looking at nice things.
00:07:36.745 -->
00:07:43.805That's why we watch movies in theaters and TV shows and we keep coming back to them because they look so clean.
00:07:43.805 -->
00:07:46.005Here's some things that you want to avoid.
00:07:46.005 -->
00:07:47.946Built -in laptop cameras.
00:07:47.946 -->
00:07:54.793Because they don't have the depth or the presence to capture your entire image properly.
00:07:54.793 -->
00:08:08.074Unless you are using one of the latest MacBook Pros and have spent the time with proper lighting, you will look much cleaner on a MacBook camera or a webcam because you paid attention to lighting.
00:08:08.074 -->
00:08:13.053Alright, this is the last step just coming up, room treatment.
00:08:13.053 -->
00:08:20.045This will make sure that your audio, your lighting, and your camera show the best picture possible.
00:08:20.045 -->
00:08:21.165This is room treatment.
00:08:21.165 -->
00:08:23.206You're treating the room for audio.
00:08:23.206 -->
00:08:25.045You're treating the room for design.
00:08:25.045 -->
00:08:27.245You're treating the room for video.
00:08:27.245 -->
00:08:35.025All so that you can showcase where you are, what you care about, who you are as a person.
00:08:35.025 -->
00:08:38.025All of these things come together in the shot.
00:08:38.025 -->
00:08:41.865In Hollywood, this is known as blocking the shot.
00:08:41.865 -->
00:08:46.096If you've seen behind the scenes of sets, you're like, wait, how did they capture that image?
00:08:46.096 -->
00:08:50.029Because they paid attention to what the camera sees.
00:08:50.029 -->
00:08:52.909not everything else needs to be proper.
00:08:52.909 -->
00:09:05.409So with proper audio treatment to your room, you're making sure that you minimize flat surfaces including walls, floors, because flat surfaces will bring audio reflections.
00:09:05.409 -->
00:09:13.679And that's the thing that I mentioned earlier, laptop microphones will capture those reflections so much easily because they are a condenser type microphone.
00:09:13.679 -->
00:09:18.566So you want to make sure that you're covering those surfaces with curtains.
00:09:18.605 -->
00:09:28.666audio foam panels or pretty foam panels, paintings, and that will help to kill off the excessive audio reflection in your video.
00:09:28.666 -->
00:09:35.306Now you can arrange and decorate your background with memorabilia and things that resonate with you to showcase your personality.
00:09:35.306 -->
00:09:44.365If you've seen any of the videos from Gary Vee or Pat Flynn or Sean Cannell, you'll see the stuff that's in their background.
00:09:44.365 -->
00:09:45.566It's stuff that they love.
00:09:45.566 -->
00:09:46.669It's stuff that they...
00:09:46.669 -->
00:09:49.309resonate with the stuff that they've collected.
00:09:49.309 -->
00:09:51.970They want to showcase it for the show.
00:09:51.970 -->
00:09:58.669So again, you want to make sure that you're bringing that into your background to showcase who you are.
00:09:58.669 -->
00:10:03.190Now keeping that background neat and uncluttered is another look.
00:10:03.190 -->
00:10:07.289Or you can have a well -organized bookshelf or a simple wall.
00:10:07.289 -->
00:10:09.509They'll also do the job.
00:10:09.509 -->
00:10:13.669Here are some of the things that you want to avoid in your background.
00:10:13.669 -->
00:10:14.765Bright lights.
00:10:14.765 -->
00:10:19.765that are again distracting you or distracting the audience from you.
00:10:19.765 -->
00:10:22.745You want to make sure that you're being focused on.
00:10:22.745 -->
00:10:24.605You're the talent in the show.
00:10:24.605 -->
00:10:26.306So avoid bright lights.
00:10:26.306 -->
00:10:30.485Avoid software -based virtual backgrounds or camera blurring.
00:10:30.485 -->
00:10:36.865Now recently I interviewed a guest and the camera was struggling so much keeping that guest in focus.
00:10:36.865 -->
00:10:43.086So I asked him to turn off the blur and I was able to see the beautiful natural wood wall behind them.
00:10:43.086 -->
00:10:44.398They live in a cabin.
00:10:44.398 -->
00:10:47.538and which added to the overall feel of the conversation.
00:10:47.538 -->
00:10:57.577She basically sold everything she has to go live in this cabin and have a peace of mind that only comes from very intentional stuff.
00:10:57.577 -->
00:11:00.977So why do these four aspects matter?
00:11:00.977 -->
00:11:02.097Why does it matter?
00:11:02.097 -->
00:11:10.518Because by focusing on these four aspects, audio, lighting, video, and room treatment, you're showing the podcast host.
00:11:10.518 -->
00:11:13.453You're showing the podcast audience.
00:11:13.453 -->
00:11:20.994that you take your role as a guest seriously and are committed to providing value to their show.
00:11:20.994 -->
00:11:31.153It alleviates the stress from the host's mind about technical issues, allowing them to focus on the conversation and of course allowing you to focus on the conversation as well.
00:11:31.153 -->
00:11:45.870As a result, you can expect to have an amazing experience and trust me, you're gonna want to have more guest appearances when you have that first amazing seamless experience.
00:11:45.870 -->
00:11:51.269Recently, I jumped on a guest conversation and there was so much echo.
00:11:51.269 -->
00:12:01.009I could hear myself speak when I spoke in the microphone from the guest and the guest was like, okay, I'll just mute myself and then you talk and then you mute yourself when I talk.
00:12:01.009 -->
00:12:04.090I was like, no, that's way too complicated.
00:12:04.090 -->
00:12:06.129I'm not going to enjoy this conversation.
00:12:06.129 -->
00:12:10.789So we decided to end it and, you know, do it another time.
00:12:10.789 -->
00:12:18.018So to wrap up, remember, that being a standout remote guest is about more than just your insights.
00:12:18.018 -->
00:12:26.557It's about how well you present those insights by investing in quality audio and video equipment and setting up your environment properly.
00:12:26.557 -->
00:12:35.278You're setting yourself up for success and making a positive lasting impression on both the host and the audience.
00:12:35.278 -->
00:12:42.018Thanks so much for your time and I hope these tips help you shine in your next podcast appearance.
