You've heard it everywhere. Breast implants need to be replaced every 10 years. It sounds like a hard rule, repeated by surgeons, bloggers, and even some manufacturers. But it's actually two different ideas smashed together, and mixing them up could lead you to the wrong decision, whether that means rushing into unnecessary surgery or ignoring a real warning sign for years.
In this video, I'm going to break down where the 10 year rule actually came from, what really happens to an implant as it ages, and what would actually make a surgeon recommend replacement.

❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Do breast implants really need to be replaced every 10 years?
No. There is no expiration date that forces a healthy, intact implant to be removed. Replacement is based on what is actually happening with the implant and the tissue around it, not a calendar. The 10 year number came from early studies and manufacturer data, not from a biological clock built into the device.
How do you know if a silicone breast implant has ruptured?
Silicone implants can rupture without collapsing, which is called a silent rupture, so the breast can look and feel completely normal even with a torn shell. Imaging such as ultrasound or MRI is often needed to confirm whether the shell is still intact, which is why routine checks matter more than counting years.
What is capsular contracture and does it mean the implant failed?
Capsular contracture happens when the scar tissue around an implant tightens, making the breast feel firmer, change shape, or become painful. The implant itself may be perfectly intact, since the problem is with the scar tissue, not the device, though it can still require surgery to correct.
