Park Bench Perspective - Episode 24 - Showing Up, Getting Uncomfortable, and the Romance of Baseball

WEBVTT
00:00:25.760 --> 00:00:32.159
Helping me to win the free doing Mike Hammer?
00:00:32.320 --> 00:00:35.600
Carlos Figaro and my friend, I'm doing wonderful today.
00:00:35.759 --> 00:00:37.280
And yourself, how are you?
00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:38.880
I'm doing really well.
00:00:39.039 --> 00:00:40.719
I'm happy to be back on the bench.
00:00:40.799 --> 00:00:43.840
And I just hit record here because we're having a deep conversation.
00:00:43.920 --> 00:00:46.399
And so we're just gonna dive right back into it.
00:00:46.560 --> 00:00:51.840
So you're talking about people's inability to do so social things, and I'll take a step back.
00:00:52.079 --> 00:01:00.079
I'm gonna say everybody as a parent wants to make their kids' life easier, better, not have them deal with the problems you had.
00:01:00.479 --> 00:01:05.920
I think that the problem that we've got as a society is that nobody ever wants to be uncomfortable.
00:01:06.239 --> 00:01:08.959
Nobody ever wants to get outside their comfort zone.
00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:12.400
So being social, talking, all of those things.
00:01:12.560 --> 00:01:24.159
In my career, you don't have to going back even 20 years, the number of people who were afraid to deal with an angry customer, and I'm like, going, so you've never had anyone mad at you before?
00:01:24.640 --> 00:01:41.040
You talk the problem out, you let them blow their steam, and there's lots of techniques for that, but it's we're I feel like we as a society, and I'm not this is not generational, we are really setting ourselves up for failure because we're not learning to do the hard things and take the risks.
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:47.760
It's the old to get better, to get uncomfortable, to get better, and to push yourself.
00:01:47.920 --> 00:01:50.959
And I remember when we were little, we I did it with sports.
00:01:51.040 --> 00:01:51.760
I did it a lot.
00:01:51.920 --> 00:01:56.000
Nobody was telling me to be great, you gotta do what the game wants to do.
00:01:56.239 --> 00:01:58.560
None of these weird kinds, you just knew that you had it.
00:01:58.719 --> 00:02:02.319
I didn't work, I it didn't seem like I tried to work hard in the next day.
00:02:02.400 --> 00:02:03.680
I tried to work as hard as I could.
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:03.920
Yeah.
00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:05.040
To get better at that point.
00:02:05.120 --> 00:02:06.239
Or as hard as you had to.
00:02:06.400 --> 00:02:06.879
I had to pay.
00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:11.439
And I did that, but I know when it came to pitching and like shooting cool, the things you can do on your own.
00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:11.599
Yeah.
00:02:11.759 --> 00:02:13.680
And I had the school across the street, so I could play.
00:02:14.159 --> 00:02:15.199
You could work harder.
00:02:15.280 --> 00:02:22.479
And in my dreams, or not my dreams, in my mind, in my imagination, I was hitting the buzzer beater, game seven, blah, blah.
00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:26.240
But let's just take it a step back from a philosophical standpoint.
00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:31.680
I feel my parents never took stuff off of my plate because it was hard.
00:02:31.919 --> 00:02:32.080
No.
00:02:32.240 --> 00:02:32.719
You know what I mean?
00:02:32.800 --> 00:02:34.960
It's like, oh, I'm not gonna have you do this hard thing.
00:02:35.120 --> 00:02:38.879
Well, you get to the point where people claim that the parents are showing up at job interviews.
00:02:38.960 --> 00:02:39.599
You know what I mean?
00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:47.759
Where it's like going, you know, you need to develop some kind of grit, some kind of live or fail, but do it on your own.
00:02:48.319 --> 00:02:50.560
Changed where we coddle them till.
00:02:50.639 --> 00:02:51.039
Yeah.
00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:57.599
And that is true because like now you think, I'm gonna fuck, I'm gonna set my kid, I'm gonna help them look for a job.
00:02:57.840 --> 00:02:59.520
I'm gonna come make my contacts now.
00:02:59.599 --> 00:03:03.199
And I do know it still happens because you look at politics right now, the contacts.
00:03:03.439 --> 00:03:03.599
Sure.
00:03:03.680 --> 00:03:06.400
Well, no, there's and then the thing is there's nothing wrong with that.
00:03:06.479 --> 00:03:08.240
No, there's nothing wrong with introductions.
00:03:08.400 --> 00:03:14.800
In contact and introductions, but we used to be it used way back to listening to my mom talk about my grandpa.
00:03:15.840 --> 00:03:28.319
He was eight and his sister was 13, and mom would and grandma husband died, yeah, she'd take off for a week 10 days at a time, and it was they were just like, this wasn't like the food stock.
00:03:28.560 --> 00:03:29.680
Let me give you an example.
00:03:29.840 --> 00:03:31.360
I need to change the names.
00:03:31.439 --> 00:03:32.000
Definitely.
00:03:32.159 --> 00:03:34.639
I knew somebody that was pursuing a career, right?
00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:41.599
One of their parents said, okay, to pursue this career, the next step in the career would be to work at such and such a place.
00:03:41.840 --> 00:03:45.759
Here's the person that runs a such and such a place, here's their number.
00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:48.639
Call them, talk to them about opportunities.
00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:50.879
And that's what that's where the parent left it.
00:03:51.039 --> 00:03:53.439
The person never went and followed through on it.
00:03:53.599 --> 00:03:54.879
And to me, and that's the difference.
00:03:54.960 --> 00:03:56.800
It's like, listen, I laid you an opportunity.
00:03:56.879 --> 00:03:58.000
You said you wanted to do this.
00:03:58.159 --> 00:04:07.360
I gave you context, but if you're not gonna take the step of making the call, because no one wants to make a call, everybody wants to send a damn email because they're afraid of the reaction.
00:04:07.599 --> 00:04:15.439
And that's honestly, that's one of the best lessons I ever learned in corporate America, which was people will send emails back and forth and back and forth and back and forth.
00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:16.480
Just pick up the damn phone.
00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:17.279
Pick up the phone.
00:04:17.519 --> 00:04:24.000
Because you can you can make things in a 30-second call, you can clarify, you know, hours worth of reflections.
00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:24.879
Yes, exactly.
00:04:25.279 --> 00:04:25.519
Exactly.
00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:26.879
But people are afraid to.
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:28.319
What is the what's the big thing?
00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:33.920
And I'm not gonna say the statistic, but it's a huge problem of young men never having asked anyone on a date.
00:04:34.160 --> 00:04:43.839
They don't ask them, you know, there's huge, like a quarter of them men under 30 have not asked a person on a date out face to face outside of a dating app.
00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:59.600
Yeah, that's the thing, outside of a dating app, where it's like just come up to somebody and say, now, obviously, as a society, we have altered the rules of the game where things are appropriate and inappropriate, but still, I don't think there's a problem in in a bar to talk up to somebody and say, hey, I'm Carlos, you know what I mean?
00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:01.279
And but people are afraid to do that.
00:05:01.360 --> 00:05:02.800
People are afraid to make the phone call.
00:05:03.040 --> 00:05:04.800
Big people because it's easier on an app.
00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:06.480
You can swipe, there's no rejection.
00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:11.199
But you can look at all you try to check the boxes before you make the introduction.
00:05:11.360 --> 00:05:20.800
I quit, it was it became to me, it became a job interview every time you went on a date, and it cost a couple hundred dollars to get turned down, or to say, this job ain't for me.
00:05:20.879 --> 00:05:27.279
Yeah, so I got off them, and what I found Annie, yeah, it was I was literally ready to say, you know what?
00:05:27.439 --> 00:05:30.399
That old guy uh getting old on my own is fine.
00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:32.560
I'm gonna do this, travel, do whatever.
00:05:32.959 --> 00:05:49.120
And all of a sudden, the old-fashioned in my line of sight at a concert, it happened, and it was like on time stood still, and you know the things, the the vision, peripheral vision got blurry, and you're just kind of like, Awww.
00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:52.160
But it and I say that and I kind of wonder if I'm just trying to play.
00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:53.920
Annie, I hope you're listening.
00:05:55.120 --> 00:05:56.800
Well, she's heard this story many times.
00:05:57.040 --> 00:06:00.639
I just wonder if I was trying to make that up.
00:06:00.879 --> 00:06:01.360
But I go no.
00:06:01.519 --> 00:06:04.079
It was But here's the thing is it's almost Zen-like.
00:06:04.160 --> 00:06:04.399
Yes.
00:06:04.560 --> 00:06:05.600
It's almost, you know what I mean?
00:06:05.680 --> 00:06:06.800
You like you weren't looking.
00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:07.360
You know what I mean?
00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:08.480
Stop looking.
00:06:08.879 --> 00:06:10.560
There is something hard.
00:06:10.800 --> 00:06:11.839
It's not that you're stopping.
00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:17.279
See, to me, there's a difference between stopping looking and not being open to it.
00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:25.199
And you were allowing yourself, you were open to it, but you were living your life and your mission, and then it happened as opposed to making that your mission.
00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:26.079
It was supposed to happen.
00:06:26.319 --> 00:06:27.519
Kind of like watching a pot boil.
00:06:27.680 --> 00:06:27.839
Yeah.
00:06:29.680 --> 00:06:31.759
It's gonna it the process is it will drop.
00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:32.959
You know me, and I'm not Mr.
00:06:33.120 --> 00:06:34.000
Woo, I'm not Mr.
00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:47.600
Crystals and tarot cards, and um two plus two equals four, reason and logic, but there is something to be said for manifesting things, or you're not manifesting, but I see I don't like the word manifesting because it's I like being open to it.
00:06:47.759 --> 00:06:52.480
Okay, allowing yourself to it's not Harry Potter, yeah, it's it's this.
00:06:52.560 --> 00:06:54.959
Okay, so this is the funny, and I talked to you about it.
00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:58.000
We talked about moving out of the country for a year or so.
00:06:58.160 --> 00:07:01.199
Yes, and Spain, Portugal, now I brought that up.
00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:03.199
You brought it up, Danny brought it up.
00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:07.279
She wanted to go to Paris, but I'm like, I don't want to go to that big city, yeah.
00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:19.120
But we we looked at the viability of going to Spain on a seaside community, 20, 30, 40,000 community, yeah, and all of a sudden I start doing the research.
00:07:19.199 --> 00:07:24.879
Now, what this has happened with every business I've done, I've started or gone to, it just starts with the spark.
00:07:25.040 --> 00:07:26.000
It does, the idea.
00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:46.079
And so with the kids going back to that, I was gonna say I feel bad for kids 20, mid-late 20s down, where they're living their life online so much, yeah, they're not gonna remember a childhood where they went out with their friends because they're not gonna have friends to say, Hey, remember when we did this?
00:07:46.160 --> 00:07:47.519
Because they're like, what were you doing?
00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:50.160
I was in my house, doom scrolling.
00:07:50.319 --> 00:07:50.480
Yeah.
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:57.759
And yeah, it it is and once again, I don't I feel like this is generational, but it also affects people older.
00:07:57.839 --> 00:08:01.680
I just feel like we're uh listen, life, you're gonna strike out.
00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:04.319
You're gonna strike out a lot in life.
00:08:04.480 --> 00:08:07.600
The question is, are you gonna strike out with the bat on your shoulders or swinging?
00:08:07.759 --> 00:08:09.839
And are you gonna be able to get up and get to the plate again?
00:08:09.920 --> 00:08:10.800
Yes, because it's a game.
00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:12.079
Show up today.
00:08:12.240 --> 00:08:14.720
It's funny, I was at Panera the other day with Danny.
00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:16.399
Panera.
00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:17.120
I like it.
00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:21.120
But in the afternoon on a weekday, there tends to be older people.
00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:21.360
Yeah.
00:08:21.600 --> 00:08:30.399
And there was like five or six, and all of them were and this lovely late 70s, early 80s gentleman, and I kept saying he's I go she's on porn.
00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:33.679
He's on seniors are us and looking for a date.
00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:36.399
So I said, She's on he's on porn, and he goes, Really?
00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:38.320
I'm like, I'm not old, maybe.
00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:39.519
Good for him.
00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:40.879
Everybody's on the phone.
00:08:40.960 --> 00:09:04.320
And it's weird, and we the the ability to uh connect and have these memories is when you sit down with your friends and go over them, and why and so what I I teach say to kids or anybody that we all have to and I was saying this to my brother when it was he was in his difficulties at the end.
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:06.960
You gotta help yourself, yeah.
00:09:07.039 --> 00:09:21.519
That's and people like to help people or try to help themselves, yeah, but it's hard to help someone that doesn't want to in any effort, and then you're like, and especially if their family are real close, you feel an obligation to, but then you're like, part of it's like, well, screw it.
00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:34.320
If you're not gonna try to here's the thing listen, I'm I don't want to be Pollyanna, but I really feel like where hustle meets opportunity is where success sparks happen, and but you gotta bring it up.
00:09:34.639 --> 00:09:39.519
Because very few people just I'm just reading a couple of Beatles biographies.
00:09:40.159 --> 00:09:54.960
Those guys worked their ass off for year after year and played thousands of shows, and a new American pop record would come out, and Lennon and McCartney would sit and listen to it over and over again to learn how to play it and figure out how they made the sounds.
00:09:55.200 --> 00:09:57.519
These the Beatles were not an overnight anything.
00:09:57.600 --> 00:10:01.120
No, that was very talented people who worked their ass off for a very long time.
00:10:01.200 --> 00:10:03.919
That's one of those things when a band breaks and it's like, oh, you're an overnight success.
00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:05.919
He's like, I've been touring for 10 years, but sure.
00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:10.480
It looks easy to us what they're doing because they've done it so much.
00:10:10.720 --> 00:10:18.720
And once again, I'm gonna I'm gonna beat the hell out of this thing because it's something that you came up with uh around a year ago when your mom passed, was the importance of showing up.
00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:25.039
But that's important, I think, that you meant in the context for other people, just showing up that that's the criteria, somebody that shows up, but you know what?
00:10:25.120 --> 00:10:25.919
Show up for yourself.
00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:27.440
You know what I mean?
00:10:27.519 --> 00:10:31.440
Show up every day for yourself, show up for yourself and don't and give yourself a break sometimes.
00:10:31.600 --> 00:10:32.399
This is very important.
00:10:32.799 --> 00:10:43.519
Beat yourself up because if the other thing I say that people near and dear to me are having one easy thing to say if you are or doing pretty close to it, say, I'm doing the best I can.
00:10:43.600 --> 00:10:50.799
Yeah, and if you mean it, and if it's true, everybody that hears that most of the time they'll say, Alright, all right.
00:10:50.960 --> 00:10:52.639
Well, listen, I'm gonna paraphrase Joe Rogan.
00:10:53.039 --> 00:10:57.679
Listen, we're just a bunch of monkeys flying on a rock, flying through space at hundreds of thousands of miles an hour, man.
00:10:57.759 --> 00:10:59.279
That's put that perspective in.
00:10:59.360 --> 00:11:00.559
Just give yourself some grace.
00:11:00.799 --> 00:11:04.320
I said this to a child, I won't name the child's name, but it's a child.
00:11:04.720 --> 00:11:10.559
At a time when I said, You think this is you, I got my fist here, and the world revolves around you.
00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:18.720
Yeah, I'm gonna say, now, because you're near and near to my heart, it in a sense it does to me.
00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:26.399
Yeah, but the reality is we're just one of seven, eight, nine billion going around that spot.
00:11:26.720 --> 00:11:35.519
And nobody, you you're not saying this, especially since the the the political, the war going on, all the stuff going on with the oligarchs, I think.
00:11:36.080 --> 00:11:39.440
Nobody's heartbeat is more important than anybody else's.
00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:46.080
Jeff Basil's heartbeat is not more important than the person you sit at the 55, you see at the 55-gallon.
00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:46.720
You know what?
00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:49.840
They're gonna put him in a box in the ground just like us.
00:11:51.279 --> 00:11:52.399
He gets, you know, whatever.
00:11:52.559 --> 00:11:54.559
Elon Musk has trillions of dollars.
00:11:54.720 --> 00:11:56.159
He's going in a box just like us.
00:11:56.960 --> 00:11:57.840
There's nothing he can do about it.
00:11:58.159 --> 00:11:58.399
I say that.
00:11:58.639 --> 00:11:59.360
Nothing he can do about it.
00:11:59.600 --> 00:12:01.279
I say that people in our inner circle are close.
00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:03.200
Yeah, to me, yeah, you mean the world.
00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:04.000
Yes, absolutely.
00:12:04.240 --> 00:12:05.840
But to everybody else, you're just part of the world.
00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:06.799
Well, I mean, what is it?
00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:11.840
What is the saying about dogs, which is they're an important part of your world, you're their whole world.
00:12:12.080 --> 00:12:12.639
The whole world.
00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:22.240
And so I uh but I think the key though is show up for yourself, show up for other people, but every day, consistently showing up to me isn't, oh, I came.
00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:22.879
No.
00:12:23.120 --> 00:12:30.080
On the days where you felt like crap, yeah, on the day you you kept showing up, you kept showing up, and that's that is the key to success.
00:12:30.159 --> 00:12:34.960
I I was somebody that was a hardcore smoker from a very young age.
00:12:35.279 --> 00:12:40.480
If someone would have told you, asked you who's somebody that isn't gonna be able to quit, you might have said me.
00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:41.840
But you know what?
00:12:42.080 --> 00:12:47.360
You just you just you just you to quote the common man, just don't stop at the corner and pick up a flip-top box.
00:12:47.440 --> 00:12:48.399
Yep, don't do that.
00:12:48.559 --> 00:13:08.960
I was talking earlier about what was I talking about when you came in, the you kind of got me on a uh all over the place sideways, but when it comes to helping people that want to help themselves, yeah, it's easier to put a foot forward or realize that you are important, but the most important person you're important to is yourself.
00:13:09.279 --> 00:13:12.159
What is the biggest mistake that salesmen make?
00:13:12.559 --> 00:13:13.840
They don't shut up.
00:13:14.080 --> 00:13:16.639
That's true, that's a big one, but I I think asking for the sale.
00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:17.759
Well, you gotta ask for the money.
00:13:17.840 --> 00:13:18.559
You gotta ask for the sale.
00:13:18.799 --> 00:13:21.120
The hardest part is too, because and then don't discount yourself.
00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:25.039
I know someone near that does a bids of job and then say, well, I'll that in.
00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:26.879
I'm like, don't be throwing nothing in.
00:13:27.039 --> 00:13:32.480
You're what they tell people when they get to you're you have a value, you back it up with your effort.
00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:32.960
Yes.
00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:36.159
So you go sell your value, yeah, but you gotta bring the effort.
00:13:36.320 --> 00:13:41.679
If you're gonna try to get the value without the effort, you're gonna be found out.
00:13:41.919 --> 00:13:49.600
So I said this at a company, and I was not big enough in the company to have a say, but we a company had developed a brand new product, it was very cool, it was cutting edge.
00:13:49.759 --> 00:13:51.840
And the salesman like, we're gonna just throw that in.
00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:55.519
I'm like, okay, so we believe that this is a valuable product, yes.
00:13:56.080 --> 00:13:59.279
Okay, what value are we give telling the customer it's worth?
00:13:59.679 --> 00:14:01.600
Zero, because you're just giving it in.
00:14:01.759 --> 00:14:07.919
If we really think, and I don't know, if we really think this is a really good product that's gonna add value, we need to charge for it.
00:14:08.159 --> 00:14:08.639
You know what I mean?
00:14:08.960 --> 00:14:13.840
If you do something on the marketplace, if you put zero less responsibility through five bucks, ten bucks it's a big one.
00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:17.360
Well, that's the old saying, and I don't know if it's true, but I believe human psychology, it is true.
00:14:17.440 --> 00:14:21.360
If you put something free on your corner and it'll stay there, but if you say five dollars, it'll be still there.
00:14:22.480 --> 00:14:24.480
So you know it's when you talk about effort and doing stuff.
00:14:24.720 --> 00:14:34.000
And I've been an effort guy, and uh, back to I don't know, when growing up, it was just responsibility was bestowed on me, and I didn't sit there and go, ah, dang.
00:14:34.080 --> 00:14:36.080
I just said, Does everybody do this or not?
00:14:36.399 --> 00:14:41.440
We didn't have social media to realize everybody didn't, and we didn't have social media to think my life could be like that.
00:14:41.600 --> 00:14:42.720
No, that's somebody else's life.
00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:45.200
Okay, did I want to be an Owen Ryan growing up?
00:14:45.279 --> 00:14:47.039
Or the newspaper article said Ferrand?
00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:50.559
Of course I did, but I also knew that they didn't just get it.
00:14:50.639 --> 00:14:55.200
Also, and we just I'm gonna give an example in my life and just see how my dad handled it.
00:14:55.279 --> 00:14:57.279
And I feel like it is sending the right lessons.
00:14:57.360 --> 00:15:02.000
So when we were in Babe Ruth baseball, it was like 13, 14, and 15.
00:15:02.480 --> 00:15:05.200
They would cut two people before it started.
00:15:05.360 --> 00:15:08.480
And it was Dave Whiteford was the the coach, or Mr.
00:15:08.559 --> 00:15:09.840
Whiteford, it was his name, Dave.
00:15:10.480 --> 00:15:10.639
Don.
00:15:10.960 --> 00:15:12.720
Anyways, he was a coach and he calls me to cut me.
00:15:12.799 --> 00:15:14.639
And my dad gets on the phone and he didn't know I had hung up.
00:15:14.720 --> 00:15:19.200
My dad's like, first of all, you're the coach, you make your roster decisions, I got no question about that.
00:15:19.279 --> 00:15:22.559
But this is a really shitty system when you tell a kid he's an all-star and then you're cutting.
00:15:22.799 --> 00:15:24.159
Yeah, that's a really shitty system.
00:15:24.240 --> 00:15:24.879
We shouldn't do that.
00:15:25.039 --> 00:15:26.879
But I'm not telling you you shouldn't have cut my kid.
00:15:26.960 --> 00:15:32.159
I'd probably have cut my kid too in these same circumstances, but it's a shitty system, which is the right way to do it, right?
00:15:32.240 --> 00:15:34.240
He's not telling the coach you can't cut my kid.
00:15:34.320 --> 00:15:35.200
I what has I read?
00:15:35.440 --> 00:15:39.440
The famous story is that Michael Jordan didn't was cut from his sophomore basketball team.
00:15:39.840 --> 00:15:44.639
You're cut as a sophomore from the high school team, but his mom's serving too much.
00:15:44.960 --> 00:15:47.519
But his mom did his mom call the athletic director and complain?
00:15:47.679 --> 00:15:49.200
No, I just have to work harder next time.
00:15:49.360 --> 00:16:03.120
You gotta work harder, and they don't ever go on to say, yeah, at his age, being 12, 14, 8, 16 months behind than us, there was five to eight players at this school better than him.
00:16:03.519 --> 00:16:07.440
And nobody was gonna nobody's looking at going, well, that's the next Michael, who's Michael Jordan.
00:16:07.600 --> 00:16:09.840
Yeah, they're like going, we have all these other kids.
00:16:10.240 --> 00:16:17.279
And the hard part that happened to us, sometimes you're like, we're bored with the juniors and seniors, we're gonna start promoting the sophomores and freshmen.
00:16:17.519 --> 00:16:22.480
Yeah, but what about the juniors and seniors that put all that time in their high school experience?
00:16:22.799 --> 00:16:24.080
We're not gonna get anywhere with them.
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:24.960
Says who?
00:16:25.120 --> 00:16:31.519
Says who it happened to us, we kind of had a purge, and all these younger kids came in, yeah, and they didn't do any better.
00:16:32.080 --> 00:16:34.240
If anything, they did worse than we did.
00:16:34.320 --> 00:16:42.720
But you can't fault the coach on certain things because part of being coached is you molding these kids, it's not win at all costs at high school.
00:16:42.960 --> 00:16:49.840
I think that it is hard for anyone right now to understand how big a deal big deal Michael Jordan was.
00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:50.240
Yeah.
00:16:50.399 --> 00:16:55.120
But the important thing to me about Michael Jordan is Michael Jordan was created, he was not born.
00:16:55.279 --> 00:17:00.080
Michael Jordan, everybody says, was the first guy to show up at practice and the last guy to leave.
00:17:00.879 --> 00:17:01.360
His whole career.
00:17:01.919 --> 00:17:02.320
You know what I mean?
00:17:02.720 --> 00:17:06.720
What I remember that Kevin McHale said it when he drafted uh Stefan Marbury, he's a gym rat.
00:17:06.960 --> 00:17:07.359
You know what I mean?
00:17:07.519 --> 00:17:08.319
It's like that's what you want.
00:17:08.400 --> 00:17:11.440
You want guys that just love to play and want to get better and this and that.
00:17:11.519 --> 00:17:16.799
But the thing is, that that is so hard, so challenging to do.
00:17:16.880 --> 00:17:18.799
I'll give you some autobiographical stuff.
00:17:18.960 --> 00:17:23.279
I'm trying to pivot in my career and develop a career writing, and so I've been writing pretty consistently.
00:17:23.359 --> 00:17:27.119
I've been showing up, but some days it's like I want 12 people read this.
00:17:27.359 --> 00:17:30.160
I worked for six hours on this, and 12 people read it.
00:17:30.240 --> 00:17:30.720
But you know what?
00:17:30.880 --> 00:17:46.480
You just keep posting and posting, and people read it, and then all of a sudden, holy shit, this baseball scout just shared it with this guy who's on, you know, Dan Duquette is reading my stuff, and he's on ESPN, and it's like going, so you just but you could it is showing up every day isn't easy.
00:17:46.799 --> 00:17:47.359
It's hard.
00:17:47.599 --> 00:17:50.720
I always get a kick, not a kick, but I find it fascinating in these bands.
00:17:50.799 --> 00:17:56.079
Yeah, I think it was Huskerdue or some i sonic where they're reading somebody's just made a movie or trying to make a movie about them.
00:17:56.400 --> 00:18:05.599
And somebody shows there's no one in the audience, they're basically playing to themselves, and you probably could bring it up with the Ramones because they're breaking in until they get a break, until they get a follow.
00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:10.160
Jim Morrison, or you look at some of the Beatles, yeah, they played a lot of pubs.
00:18:10.240 --> 00:18:11.359
There weren't many people there.
00:18:11.839 --> 00:18:14.400
The Ramones traveled the United States in a van.
00:18:14.640 --> 00:18:17.759
Yeah, and you look at that break watching the Bohemian Rapture.
00:18:18.160 --> 00:18:18.799
He did that.
00:18:18.960 --> 00:18:23.839
Everybody did it until you get a podcast and until something clicks.
00:18:23.920 --> 00:18:24.960
Yeah, it's funny.
00:18:25.039 --> 00:18:32.720
So talking about motivation, and we kind of started off with we don't want to say kids are messing up, but get out and touch the grass.
00:18:32.799 --> 00:18:35.279
In fact, okay, so Field of Dreams game came out.
00:18:35.359 --> 00:18:35.519
Yeah.
00:18:35.680 --> 00:18:51.680
And for me and you, you can just picture it, anybody that likes baseball like we do, going, when he's sitting there going, when Ray Leona comes out of the corner, and he's sitting there for the first time, and the way he's hitting his tiny glove, and you're like, a lot of that's true, but some of it you're like, did he really play the role of a baseball?
00:18:52.079 --> 00:19:01.519
But he did a lot of the things and the touch of the grass, the smell, the smell of your leather, when you put it to the nose, I can smell the leather glove all the time, chewing on the little tennis.
00:19:02.319 --> 00:19:05.119
The sounds of the bat, the sounds of the ball and the glove, and the ball.
00:19:05.920 --> 00:19:09.119
When you pop the catcher's glove, and good catchers can get it to pop.
00:19:09.279 --> 00:19:13.279
A good catcher that wanted the pitcher to think they're on it, they can get their glove to pop.
00:19:13.440 --> 00:19:20.799
And when you can hear the trouble with the curve, you can hear the spin rate, not see it the whole time so we can see we can hear it.
00:19:21.039 --> 00:19:29.920
But that that was fun to watch the players come out of the corner and do it for the love of what they were doing.
00:19:30.160 --> 00:19:36.960
And not see baseball is so unique in that you've got two styles of you got three styles of baseball.
00:19:37.039 --> 00:19:40.400
You got people that root for their team and they like it, and they like it when their team is good.
00:19:40.640 --> 00:19:50.559
Then you have the and I fall into this, the Bob Costas, the romance, the history, the other dreams, you know what I mean?
00:19:50.640 --> 00:19:53.519
It's just the history and the folklore and the individuals.
00:19:54.319 --> 00:19:59.599
And then there's the nerds that want to sit there and say, Oh, here's the numbers, and here's what's important, here's how you do a batting lineup.
00:19:59.680 --> 00:20:08.400
And the thing is, I take from all of them, but I have the romantic baseball is romantic to me in a way no other sport is, and that is my father.
00:20:08.480 --> 00:20:10.160
It was the game I shared with my dad.
00:20:10.400 --> 00:20:21.599
It's a very romantic game because it's more calculated and slower paced than WCCO broadcast the twins for years and years, and they have this clause that they don't have to power down at night.
00:20:21.839 --> 00:20:28.400
So their broadcast goes at night when all the other ones powered down, there's less communication for the air signal to go up.
00:20:28.559 --> 00:20:33.920
Oh, Nebraska, South Dakota, and everybody listening to Herb Carneal, even Montana.
00:20:34.400 --> 00:20:40.240
They get and a lot of old ladies because we'd listen to the dark would come on after the twins because they'd break it down, but and they'd call in.
00:20:40.559 --> 00:20:44.319
But a long time ago, a comedian made it part about you play in a stadium.
00:20:44.400 --> 00:20:45.680
Yeah, baseball, they play in a field.
00:20:45.759 --> 00:20:49.759
Yeah, and this and that that's the nuances, the subtle nicen of it all.
00:20:50.079 --> 00:20:59.759
But you if you didn't like today's chapter, because to me, baseball, the romantic part we've talked about, it's a 162-chapter book.
00:21:00.160 --> 00:21:00.319
It is.
00:21:00.640 --> 00:21:02.160
And if you didn't like today's chapter, guess what?
00:21:02.240 --> 00:21:03.440
Yeah, tomorrow we got another chapter.
00:21:03.599 --> 00:21:04.400
Tomorrow we got another chapter.
00:21:04.480 --> 00:21:06.240
But you were you were a closer in college, right?
00:21:06.319 --> 00:21:07.519
You had to have that attitude.
00:21:07.839 --> 00:21:08.960
Yesterday is gone.
00:21:09.119 --> 00:21:11.119
You can't think about the home run you gave up yesterday.
00:21:11.200 --> 00:21:13.279
You're going out there today with a clean slate, brand new.
00:21:13.440 --> 00:21:18.559
And it's funny, I don't remember it as much, but I think that's part of the reason to be good at it.
00:21:18.640 --> 00:21:18.799
Yeah.
00:21:19.039 --> 00:21:19.519
You don't remember?
00:21:19.680 --> 00:21:19.839
Yeah.
00:21:20.000 --> 00:21:23.680
Because I do know going out there, I'd sit in the bullpen, and we played.
00:21:24.160 --> 00:21:28.720
We played usually four-game sets on two games a day, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
00:21:29.039 --> 00:21:31.039
And I'd give it two or three games.
00:21:31.200 --> 00:21:37.359
I only pitched an inning or so, so I could, and I the reason I could do this, I had a rubber arm and I didn't fatigue or whatever.
00:21:37.759 --> 00:21:43.119
But I do remember the first couple times, it's like you're pitching out a stretch.
00:21:43.279 --> 00:21:44.240
Yeah, nobody knows what that is.
00:21:44.319 --> 00:21:49.359
You're straighting sideways on the mound, looking at the the to the left home plate, and straight ahead you're looking at third base.
00:21:49.519 --> 00:21:51.200
Could be a person at third base, second base.
00:21:51.839 --> 00:21:58.240
It's usually one, two, maybe three runs separate the game in your favor or the other favor.
00:21:58.480 --> 00:22:14.720
But then you kind of revel and The opportunity to do it, and yes, uh we had a good team and we did but sometimes w when uh said this when you when somebody gets a home run on you and you're on the bump, yeah, there's no hiding.
00:22:15.039 --> 00:22:15.920
There's no place to hide you.
00:22:16.400 --> 00:22:17.839
Everybody is looking at you go, wow.
00:22:18.000 --> 00:22:19.759
You can't hustle yourself out of that one.
00:22:20.160 --> 00:22:26.000
Football, you can hustle on the next play, basketball, you turn the ball over, you can run back, maybe hustle, hockey hustle, get the puck back.
00:22:26.400 --> 00:22:28.319
But baseball, you can't hustle that home run.
00:22:28.720 --> 00:22:30.880
I'm a big fan of the John Boy.
00:22:31.279 --> 00:22:33.839
It's whatever that's this character his handle.
00:22:34.400 --> 00:22:36.799
But he does, he's really good at lip reading.
00:22:37.440 --> 00:22:40.960
So I've seen him do a couple with the picture reactions of the home run.
00:22:41.119 --> 00:22:41.279
Right.
00:22:42.640 --> 00:22:42.880
Yeah.
00:22:43.200 --> 00:22:48.000
Do you ever have a catcher pull a Crash Davis go, whoa, he sure hit that one a long way?
00:22:48.160 --> 00:22:49.599
And I was yeah.
00:22:50.319 --> 00:22:55.279
The younger ones at college, one of the younger bitches, the older veteran catchers.
00:22:55.440 --> 00:22:55.680
Yeah.
00:22:56.079 --> 00:22:57.279
And they weren't.
00:22:57.759 --> 00:23:01.839
One would throw the ball back to me almost as fast as I would.
00:23:02.000 --> 00:23:04.400
Every time, and I'm like to him, dude, what the fuck?
00:23:04.480 --> 00:23:08.079
And he was like, just on the edge of being a prick.
00:23:08.160 --> 00:23:08.480
Yeah.
00:23:08.640 --> 00:23:14.400
But if I throw a ball and I'm like, shit, I'll kind of look it down at the ground to see if my footland all of a sudden look up and the ball's being fired at me.
00:23:14.480 --> 00:23:16.400
And I'm like going, fuck it.
00:23:16.559 --> 00:23:17.839
The coach is gonna be ready.
00:23:18.000 --> 00:23:19.920
I'm like, it's on my team.
00:23:20.079 --> 00:23:21.279
I'm trying to get through, yeah.
00:23:21.359 --> 00:23:26.079
I'm having a hard time with the other team trying to get me to do bad.
00:23:26.240 --> 00:23:28.799
But maybe he was trying to get me to focus in or whatever.
00:23:29.839 --> 00:23:31.359
But I was trying to figure out what I was doing.
00:23:31.519 --> 00:23:34.880
But all those parallels with baseball, and I'm not sure why I went into the field.
00:23:35.039 --> 00:23:37.519
The fields I went into the romantic part.
00:23:37.920 --> 00:23:46.880
Oh, we were talking about the book and chasing and Terrence, all these things, having a catch and stuff.
00:23:47.119 --> 00:23:52.559
The memories you make outdoors in doing things when he's kind of costing a movie.
00:23:52.640 --> 00:23:53.759
I hadn't seen him in maybe 10 years.
00:23:53.839 --> 00:23:54.720
He looks like he's 12.
00:23:54.799 --> 00:23:54.960
Yeah.
00:23:55.200 --> 00:23:58.720
And his wife, Annie, is the name in the movie.
00:23:58.799 --> 00:24:02.319
She's like, all right! She's doing the whole fascist speech at the PDF.
00:24:02.880 --> 00:24:05.680
I just feel the worst for James Earl Jones' character.
00:24:05.759 --> 00:24:09.200
He finally gets to go there because the stupid kid chokes on a hot dog.
00:24:09.359 --> 00:24:12.319
He's gotta ruin his fantasy and leave the field of dreams.
00:24:13.119 --> 00:24:15.279
James Earl Jones doesn't have to leave the field of dreams.
00:24:15.359 --> 00:24:16.000
Um the doctor does.
00:24:16.319 --> 00:24:17.039
Doc Graham does.
00:24:17.759 --> 00:24:22.240
He said I have more satisfaction helping all these people over a 40-year career as a doctor.
00:24:22.480 --> 00:24:23.839
But don't feel bad for me.
00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:24.960
More like Graham.
00:24:25.119 --> 00:24:26.400
She's um, but Wow, okay.
00:24:26.480 --> 00:24:26.799
That's right.
00:24:27.359 --> 00:24:30.000
Field of Dreams, not my top five baseball movies, but yeah, I got it.
00:24:30.079 --> 00:24:30.319
I got it.
00:24:32.400 --> 00:24:32.880
I have not.
00:24:33.119 --> 00:24:34.160
But I've got one for you.
00:24:34.319 --> 00:24:35.200
I've got one for you.
00:24:35.279 --> 00:24:38.880
It is perfect based on the smells and the sounds.
00:24:39.119 --> 00:24:40.640
It's called Efus.
00:24:41.200 --> 00:24:42.720
E-E-P-H-U-S.
00:24:42.960 --> 00:24:46.640
And I don't know if you are familiar with the old time pitch, the Ephus pitch.
00:24:46.799 --> 00:24:47.200
Yeah, oh yeah.
00:24:47.440 --> 00:24:49.920
Which is like this really slow, like we're gonna change up.
00:24:50.079 --> 00:24:52.319
Think of it like the Bugs Bunny pitch that takes forever to get to.
00:24:52.640 --> 00:24:53.839
It's almost like a softball pitch.
00:24:54.079 --> 00:24:55.119
So Ephus Pitch.
00:24:55.200 --> 00:24:56.240
So the game is called Ef.
00:24:56.559 --> 00:24:57.599
The movie is called Ephus.
00:24:57.759 --> 00:24:58.559
It's an independent movie.
00:24:58.720 --> 00:24:59.599
It came out six months ago.
00:24:59.759 --> 00:25:00.799
You have to look for it.
00:25:01.039 --> 00:25:04.960
But it is about uh 1990s in New Jersey.
00:25:05.279 --> 00:25:08.319
There's this park, there's this uh town team.
00:25:08.720 --> 00:25:16.400
Two companies play each other, but that field that they play on, that's the last game there's ever gonna be because they're putting they're tearing it down and they're putting up a school.
00:25:16.559 --> 00:25:24.720
And it's just these old timers and the guys that show up at the park, and you got the old guy who shows up at the park in his lawn chair with this scorebook and this.
00:25:24.880 --> 00:25:28.079
There's a nobody there, nobody cares about this game at all.
00:25:28.240 --> 00:25:31.359
But it is the most beautiful thing in the world watching this.
00:25:31.519 --> 00:25:35.839
But it's almost like D Did you know when you played your last ball game?
00:25:36.160 --> 00:25:36.480
No.
00:25:36.880 --> 00:25:40.079
I got not okay in college.
00:25:40.640 --> 00:25:42.720
Because you could have played town ball, everything else.
00:25:44.400 --> 00:25:48.240
When the season ended, you wondered where was that when you were chasing it.
00:25:48.400 --> 00:25:51.359
It in college, when the season ended, your eligibility was up.
00:25:51.440 --> 00:25:54.079
You're like, Well, the guys in EFUS know it's the last game.
00:25:54.160 --> 00:25:57.759
And of course they'll say, Oh, you can always play in the league up in Derbyville.
00:25:57.920 --> 00:25:59.279
That's 30 minutes away.
00:25:59.440 --> 00:26:00.079
You know what I mean?
00:26:00.160 --> 00:26:02.480
So it's like the dream is gonna die and they know it.
00:26:02.640 --> 00:26:04.640
So I highly recommend EFUS.
00:26:04.799 --> 00:26:05.119
Find it.
00:26:05.200 --> 00:26:07.359
You will if you love baseball, you will love it.
00:26:07.440 --> 00:26:08.880
It is like a baseball game.
00:26:09.039 --> 00:26:15.599
It's slow, it's beautiful, it's ambiance, it's it's not in a hurry.
00:26:15.920 --> 00:26:18.160
It's not gonna if you love pitch count.
00:26:18.319 --> 00:26:19.759
There's no colour pitch clock.
00:26:19.839 --> 00:26:21.440
There's no pitch clock, there's no anything.
00:26:21.519 --> 00:26:24.240
It's a beautiful movie, and I strongly recommend it.
00:26:24.400 --> 00:26:24.880
Eefus.
00:26:25.039 --> 00:26:27.279
Yeah, you know, the pitch clock when pitchers took too long.
00:26:27.359 --> 00:26:30.000
I always when I was pitching, I was like, I don't want to think too much.
00:26:30.240 --> 00:26:30.880
Yeah, I bring it.
00:26:31.440 --> 00:26:35.839
I want to go get the ball and I want to throw up because I don't want to think about what if I miss it.
00:26:36.319 --> 00:26:36.880
Let me ask you that.
00:26:36.960 --> 00:26:37.440
I'm fascinated.
00:26:37.599 --> 00:26:38.880
See, to me, the pitcher's brain.
00:26:39.039 --> 00:26:48.880
Like, I I feel like I I feel like I have a resource here because you look, did you ever have anybody that screwed around up on the plate like the Mike Hargrove where he made you wait too damn long and so then you wanted to make him pay for it?
00:26:49.119 --> 00:26:50.559
There was a couple, and I don't remember.
00:26:50.880 --> 00:26:51.839
They step out on you.
00:26:51.920 --> 00:26:52.720
Did that piss you off?
00:26:52.960 --> 00:26:56.799
We didn't play enough teams over and over again.
00:26:56.960 --> 00:26:57.279
No.
00:26:57.519 --> 00:27:00.240
Oh, to develop a kind of a guy that gets in your head.
00:27:01.359 --> 00:27:03.200
Or somebody that you're like notice all the time.
00:27:03.680 --> 00:27:05.680
Sometimes you're like, this what the hell's going on?
00:27:05.759 --> 00:27:15.359
But you didn't see him enough to say, every time this is some old big one that would stand out of the box, you know, the one you always watch them have to retighten the batting gloves.
00:27:15.440 --> 00:27:15.519
Yeah.
00:27:15.680 --> 00:27:29.440
And somebody do it, and you wonder, and you're like, it's it, but you know there's a routine in their head that they want to, you don't want to stand there too long, tensed up with the bat up, even though you're supposed to relax, but you want to get you don't want to do there too long because then you start thinking again.
00:27:29.680 --> 00:27:33.599
If you have any interest, look up Mike Hargrove on YouTube.
00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:35.440
Mike Hargrove at bat.
00:27:35.680 --> 00:27:37.200
He used to take a long time.
00:27:37.359 --> 00:27:40.480
Adjust the batting glove, adjust the helmet, every single pitch.
00:27:40.640 --> 00:27:45.279
And the the reason I learned about it was the twins had a pitcher block or player Chuck Knobloch.
00:27:45.440 --> 00:27:48.640
Chuck Knoblock grew up watching Mike Hargrove.
00:27:48.720 --> 00:27:51.359
So there was a lot of that in Knobloch's batting station.
00:27:51.680 --> 00:27:53.759
Get the pitcher's head just a bit and you knock it off.
00:27:53.839 --> 00:28:01.599
Like you said, you looked up the value of one mile per hour faster on your fastball is worth what a year?
00:28:01.839 --> 00:28:03.599
3.7 million, according to Drive Line.
00:28:03.680 --> 00:28:08.880
Drive Line posted a YouTube video that I wrote about what is one mile per hour worth, and they calculated it.
00:28:08.960 --> 00:28:14.480
And well, obviously, we're not talking about at the Otani level, we're talking about kids that whether you make it or you don't.
00:28:14.559 --> 00:28:19.200
And it if you can get a mile per hour, it'll increase your lifetime earnings by$3.7 million.
00:28:19.519 --> 00:28:20.319
That's crazy.
00:28:20.559 --> 00:28:32.640
Okay, so something that comes into a lot of this, we were talking about motivation, getting up and doing it back to the kids and doing it, showing up, putting out, not the putting out and doing what it was.
00:28:32.799 --> 00:28:41.039
So today, I don't know, this last couple days or whatever, since I was back from California, I could sleep all day long.
00:28:41.680 --> 00:28:43.599
For some reason, I get up and I'm usually not like that.
00:28:43.680 --> 00:28:47.440
I'm usually task, not task, I like to do stuff and stay active.
00:28:47.599 --> 00:28:51.599
But I was like, I'd sit down for a second and go, I can fall asleep.
00:28:51.759 --> 00:28:52.880
And I don't have a problem sleeping.
00:28:52.960 --> 00:28:53.119
No.
00:28:53.279 --> 00:28:54.559
For those who do, I feel bad.
00:28:54.640 --> 00:28:55.359
Yeah, but you do not.
00:28:55.680 --> 00:28:56.880
When I go to bed, it's the same thing.
00:28:57.920 --> 00:29:03.680
I turn on South Park, and I don't know what the episode was because ten minutes into it, when I decide to sleep, I'm sleeping.
00:29:04.480 --> 00:29:10.559
Now, the reason I can't sleep that long, we were talking about the shit deal that comes up, your body gets sore in bed.
00:29:10.720 --> 00:29:10.960
It does.
00:29:11.119 --> 00:29:13.200
Just lay in there, you're like, I'm just laying here.
00:29:13.359 --> 00:29:13.759
It does.
00:29:13.920 --> 00:29:17.039
I'm starting to get sore laying here, and it's not like you're laying there for days.
00:29:17.119 --> 00:29:20.400
You're like, you push it past seven and a half, eight hours, you're like, fuck.
00:29:20.799 --> 00:29:26.559
So I get up, do the coffee thing, do whatever, and I'm just fucking, excuse me, but I'm just dragging.
00:29:26.640 --> 00:29:26.960
Yeah.
00:29:27.200 --> 00:29:28.960
So I'm thinking there's gotta be something.
00:29:29.200 --> 00:29:30.319
Yeah, what the hell's going on?
00:29:30.559 --> 00:29:35.279
And it's August, and we've heard of Dog Day Afternoon or Dog Sunday.
00:29:35.440 --> 00:29:36.000
Dog Days of August.
00:29:36.160 --> 00:29:36.720
Dog Days of August.
00:29:36.960 --> 00:29:37.680
Dog Days of Summer.
00:29:37.920 --> 00:29:38.160
Summer.
00:29:38.240 --> 00:29:39.359
And so I look it up.
00:29:39.440 --> 00:29:39.920
Yeah.
00:29:40.160 --> 00:29:45.920
Is there any correlation between me being sluggish and tired and August?
00:29:46.079 --> 00:29:46.400
Yeah.
00:29:46.640 --> 00:29:54.400
And sure enough, there was a lithany of things, and I don't know why I didn't remember my thing in there, but a lot of it was okay, it's hot.
00:29:54.559 --> 00:29:57.440
Your body has been trying to cool itself all summer long.
00:29:57.680 --> 00:29:59.519
I do a lot of work outside, so that's true.
00:29:59.680 --> 00:30:00.799
So you're spending more time.
00:30:00.960 --> 00:30:04.480
This is weird things like they talk about circadian rhythm or something.
00:30:04.640 --> 00:30:11.119
Yeah, your blood goes to the surface towards the surface of your skin to try to cool your skin.
00:30:11.200 --> 00:30:11.359
Yeah.
00:30:11.519 --> 00:30:13.599
So the other organs are working harder over time.
00:30:13.920 --> 00:30:19.920
Your lungs are breathing harder, and the dehydration, because no matter what how much you're drinking, you really can't replenish all of it.
00:30:20.079 --> 00:30:21.839
So the summer months drag on.
00:30:22.000 --> 00:30:33.440
When it starts to get cool, the Christmas, or yesterday was not to be an old guy on the bench, uh, on the fan, talking about the dew point, yeah, not to be like Palermo on K-Fan.
00:30:33.599 --> 00:30:34.880
I talk about the sticky dew point.
00:30:35.039 --> 00:30:36.319
Yeah, but it was 67%.
00:30:36.720 --> 00:30:38.240
For the most part, I don't know what the hell that means.
00:30:38.319 --> 00:30:38.480
Yeah.
00:30:38.559 --> 00:30:40.319
But I think sticky, it means sticky.
00:30:40.559 --> 00:30:43.519
Anything over 60, high 50, 60, you're getting it.
00:30:43.599 --> 00:30:43.759
Yeah.
00:30:44.319 --> 00:30:45.200
Humidity, 81%.
00:30:45.440 --> 00:30:48.240
I understand that because at 100%, it should be raining.
00:30:48.400 --> 00:30:49.440
Okay, wait, wait, whoa, whoa.
00:30:49.680 --> 00:30:51.839
I swear to God, this is true.
00:30:52.000 --> 00:30:52.240
Okay.
00:30:52.640 --> 00:30:58.799
I was in Miami once and they said it was 110% humidity, and I'm like, that means buckets of water are coming from the sky.
00:30:58.880 --> 00:31:04.079
I don't, how do you I don't understand the 110% humidity, but I swear to God I heard it when I was in Miami.
00:31:04.160 --> 00:31:06.000
If anybody knows weather, explain it to me.
00:31:06.240 --> 00:31:11.599
Alright, it's back to these when they stopped doing it, but it was a big quote from athletes that are coming up the ranks.
00:31:11.759 --> 00:31:12.880
I'm gonna give it 150%.
00:31:13.200 --> 00:31:13.680
Yes, exactly.
00:31:14.000 --> 00:31:14.319
You can't.
00:31:14.720 --> 00:31:17.279
You can't don't try to impress us, just do it.
00:31:17.440 --> 00:31:22.960
This is something I tell my kids, anybody that's I've said for a long time, don't tell me you're loyal.
00:31:23.039 --> 00:31:23.359
Yeah.
00:31:23.759 --> 00:31:24.880
Don't tell me you don't lie.
00:31:25.119 --> 00:31:25.920
Don't tell me you're honest.
00:31:26.000 --> 00:31:28.319
Because you don't, if you if you have to tell me you're honest, guess what you are.
00:31:28.720 --> 00:31:29.200
You're not honest.
00:31:29.599 --> 00:31:32.079
If you have to tell me you're loyal, guess what you are.
00:31:32.480 --> 00:31:34.799
So I had a gal call me out once, many years ago.
00:31:34.880 --> 00:31:36.960
She goes, Carlos, you're really good at the tell.
00:31:37.039 --> 00:31:38.720
Not so much at the show.
00:31:39.440 --> 00:31:40.400
She was right.
00:31:40.559 --> 00:31:41.119
You know what I mean?
00:31:41.279 --> 00:31:43.920
You can say the right things, but you gotta show up and do it.
00:31:44.079 --> 00:31:48.960
Yeah, and I say, don't feel bad about me if you say I deserve respect.
00:31:49.119 --> 00:31:49.279
Yeah.
00:31:49.519 --> 00:31:50.079
You can't say that.
00:31:50.319 --> 00:31:51.359
You don't do your earnest.
00:31:51.680 --> 00:32:00.640
Here's the thing that I that baffled me with a lot of people that don't tell me you work all the time.
00:32:00.720 --> 00:32:00.880
Yeah.
00:32:01.039 --> 00:32:01.440
I don't care.
00:32:01.519 --> 00:32:02.559
Don't tell me how hard you work.
00:32:02.720 --> 00:32:02.880
Yeah.
00:32:03.039 --> 00:32:04.240
You know what's gonna impress me?
00:32:04.559 --> 00:32:11.039
When somebody else tells me how hard you work, because you telling me that is But here's actually, and we're running long, but I don't care.
00:32:11.279 --> 00:32:16.160
I feel like there's a lot of people that like to make it look like they're working hard.
00:32:16.559 --> 00:32:21.359
And the thing is, the di hours spent at the office does not mean equal working hard.
00:32:21.519 --> 00:32:23.359
To me, working hard is productivity.
00:32:23.440 --> 00:32:25.920
Yeah, is you're accomplishing things and things are getting done right.
00:32:26.240 --> 00:32:26.799
You know what I mean?
00:32:26.880 --> 00:32:29.920
There's people that working hard is performative.
00:32:30.079 --> 00:32:30.799
You know what I mean?
00:32:30.880 --> 00:32:39.519
It's like they're putting on a performance for somebody that they're working hard as opposed to, and there's a lot of people that will spend more time working to get out of working than the people that are actually working.
00:32:39.680 --> 00:32:41.039
I have some people that'll say it to me.
00:32:41.119 --> 00:32:42.079
I'm working 56.
00:32:42.400 --> 00:32:43.759
I'm like, you know what?
00:32:44.000 --> 00:32:44.799
No one cares.
00:32:44.880 --> 00:32:45.200
Yeah.
00:32:45.440 --> 00:32:48.160
I care maybe because you're someone special.
00:32:48.799 --> 00:32:53.200
For the most part, no one cares because you know it's the beginning of working hard when you're done.
00:32:53.440 --> 00:32:59.200
Back to that people notice if you work hard.
00:32:59.359 --> 00:33:00.319
Because what you're always doing?
00:33:00.400 --> 00:33:00.559
Yeah.
00:33:00.720 --> 00:33:01.119
You're working.
00:33:01.200 --> 00:33:05.599
That doesn't mean it's a sign of greatness or it's a sign of what are you running from?
00:33:05.920 --> 00:33:06.960
But you gotta work smart too.
00:33:07.839 --> 00:33:08.640
You gotta work smart.
00:33:08.720 --> 00:33:10.240
You can't just work hard, you gotta work smart.
00:33:10.400 --> 00:33:15.920
Okay, but if you're making burgers, you can work really smart, but you can't make the next burger until it's ordered.
00:33:16.240 --> 00:33:16.880
This is true.
00:33:17.119 --> 00:33:17.839
But you know what?
00:33:17.920 --> 00:33:20.640
You can have your system for how you take your order, how you fill your order.
00:33:22.000 --> 00:33:22.400
You know what I mean?
00:33:22.480 --> 00:33:30.799
You I'm a firm believer, and this is this goes back to long before uh Anthony Robbins, but he popularized the idea of canai, which is constant, never-ending improvement.
00:33:30.880 --> 00:33:34.799
You can always do things one percent better, and that's the thing about showing up.
00:33:34.880 --> 00:33:41.680
If you do yourself what, do one percent better after a hundred, after two hundred, after three hundred days, you know how much of an improvement that is?
00:33:41.759 --> 00:33:42.559
No, you know what I mean?
00:33:42.640 --> 00:33:48.319
Because you can't what sometimes I'll say to people when there's a really big project, they'll be like, I don't know where to start.
00:33:48.400 --> 00:33:50.720
So I go, how do you eat an elephant one bite at a time?
00:33:50.880 --> 00:33:53.519
But when you want to start a project, you take the first bolt off.
00:33:53.599 --> 00:33:58.400
Yeah, take the first get into it, yeah, and then if you do a lot, just don't try to do too many projects at once.
00:33:58.720 --> 00:34:07.599
Yes, that'll be and this goes back to don't tell your boss how hard they're gonna notice when you if you have to keep telling people something you're good at.
00:34:07.680 --> 00:34:08.800
You see, you know what I'm good at?
00:34:08.960 --> 00:34:09.360
You know what?
00:34:09.440 --> 00:34:14.719
Kyle Schwerberg is because he had a home run or whatever, you know, something like I hit bombs, I hit dingers right there.
00:34:16.079 --> 00:34:20.159
Yeah, I hit dingers, but you just do it in the quiet one.
00:34:20.320 --> 00:34:25.679
The Walter Payne's, we love Walter because when he got when he ran for a touchdown, when he scored a touchdown, what did he do?
00:34:25.760 --> 00:34:29.440
Yeah, he handed the ball to the ref because he was doing what he's supposed to do.
00:34:29.840 --> 00:34:31.840
I'm not going to say the name, please don't say the name.
00:34:31.920 --> 00:34:41.199
But when we were in Little League, there was a kid in the majors who was, oh my goodness, he just hit the home runs left and right, hitting home runs, and then he started switch hitting.
00:34:41.280 --> 00:34:43.280
And I'm like, You're fucking 12 years old, you're 12 years old.
00:34:43.519 --> 00:34:44.239
What are you doing?
00:34:44.480 --> 00:34:49.039
Anyways, there was no career, there was no baseball career.
00:34:49.280 --> 00:34:52.159
It was something that at 12 years old you can hit dingers great.
00:34:52.400 --> 00:34:53.840
It didn't translate into anything.
00:34:54.079 --> 00:35:04.320
One of the things I would like to you to think about for a future topic, because one of the keys that goes with this that we have not touched on is the importance of saying no.
00:35:05.039 --> 00:35:06.639
Yeah, I have a problem with that.
00:35:06.719 --> 00:35:06.960
Yeah.
00:35:07.199 --> 00:35:17.440
When it comes to helping and doing and being there, and and back to the thing we start out with, not enabling, because I hate that word.
00:35:17.519 --> 00:35:18.239
You're enabling them.
00:35:18.320 --> 00:35:19.840
I'm like, no, I'm not helping them breathe.
00:35:20.079 --> 00:35:20.320
Whatever.
00:35:20.719 --> 00:35:27.760
Okay, but instead of letting them fall, which when you're a caring person, it's hard.
00:35:28.000 --> 00:35:32.400
I don't need you to get all the knocks on your shins that I got, but you're gonna need to get a few.
00:35:32.880 --> 00:35:33.199
That's the thing.
00:35:33.519 --> 00:35:46.639
This is the magic needle threading that parents do that I've never had to do, which is how do you make sure your kids learn the lessons without them having to take on too many of the consequences of those lessons, right?
00:35:46.800 --> 00:35:53.199
Because you can't, I would think, and I thought about this with my parents as they got older, is I wanted to wrap them in bubble wrap and make sure nothing bad ever happened to them.
00:35:53.280 --> 00:35:55.440
Yeah, but that's not that you can't live your life that way.
00:35:55.519 --> 00:35:59.920
So you can't you were doing a tremendous disservice to your child if you raise them that way.
00:36:00.159 --> 00:36:07.920
But you still have to be able to, once again, you have to be able to, in life, try challenging things.
00:36:08.320 --> 00:36:10.800
And and it's okay if you if you don't succeed.
00:36:10.880 --> 00:36:15.199
I don't like the word fail, because all failure is is it's a trial.
00:36:15.280 --> 00:36:16.559
You it's a learning lesson.
00:36:16.639 --> 00:36:17.280
You learn from it.
00:36:17.360 --> 00:36:18.079
That's all you can do.
00:36:18.239 --> 00:36:20.239
Let the chips fall where they may to a certain extent.
00:36:20.320 --> 00:36:21.440
Can you go into the directive?
00:36:21.760 --> 00:36:22.320
Funny book.
00:36:22.719 --> 00:36:25.119
You have to accept the consequences.
00:36:25.199 --> 00:36:31.920
Um, and the the the one that they try to guilt, you don't want to be the last thing that you ever said to someone because something happens, something mean.
00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:34.000
Okay, well, don't be a mean person to begin with.
00:36:34.079 --> 00:36:36.159
And sometimes moods get it, and we don't know.
00:36:36.239 --> 00:36:38.000
And it's funny, I'll talk about another time.
00:36:38.079 --> 00:36:40.559
I was a little frustrated yesterday at this fucking fatigue thing.
00:36:40.639 --> 00:36:40.800
Yeah.
00:36:40.960 --> 00:36:45.119
And I was, and the kids were being kind of I said my daughter, and they're really joking and jovial.
00:36:45.199 --> 00:36:49.199
And I was like, the more they have the energy, the more I got irritated.
00:36:49.280 --> 00:36:51.679
I'm like, just don't talk to me.
00:36:51.760 --> 00:36:52.559
I'm not that kind of guy.
00:36:52.960 --> 00:36:53.440
I don't want to chitch.
00:36:53.679 --> 00:36:54.079
No, you are Mr.
00:36:54.239 --> 00:36:54.559
Grigares.
00:36:54.800 --> 00:36:59.599
And so when I looked into this, I'm like, oh we need a cold snap.
00:36:59.679 --> 00:37:05.039
And you know, and that's something as you get older that we're gonna have to deal with more and more, which is our body letting us down.
00:37:05.280 --> 00:37:13.519
I just Lionel, big old Danel Lionel, been posted on Instagram, look up Crusher, Lionel Crusher 44, or something like that.
00:37:13.599 --> 00:37:21.280
But he's only been into working up, and he said it's not hard to work on the the one today was lifting weights.
00:37:22.159 --> 00:37:24.960
The hard part isn't lifting less weight, the amount of weights you live.
00:37:25.119 --> 00:37:25.280
Yeah.
00:37:26.000 --> 00:37:30.400
The stronger ones, the one that's still doing it when all the ones you weren't you did it with before aren't there.
00:37:30.639 --> 00:37:41.760
But the the I'll wrap it up here with the blowing up or doing or whatever for yourself because A, you want to, yeah, and B, it means something to others.
00:37:42.079 --> 00:37:42.400
Yeah.
00:37:43.440 --> 00:37:44.239
What 60?
00:37:44.480 --> 00:37:49.840
You know, they sort of say you gotta throw some weight around, yeah, or your body muscle.
00:37:50.960 --> 00:37:54.800
Well, have you watched the pursuit of unhappiness with uh Will Smith?
00:37:55.039 --> 00:37:57.199
No, the pursuit of unhappiness with Larry David.
00:37:57.360 --> 00:37:57.920
I have not seen that.
00:37:58.079 --> 00:38:03.039
And it's funny when he's talking about, and he's at the thing, and Fonzi was the guy in front of him.
00:38:03.119 --> 00:38:04.320
He had his own grievances.
00:38:04.480 --> 00:38:08.960
He went on top of Jefferson's grievances for the decoration, and he had 422 others.
00:38:09.119 --> 00:38:18.639
One that was funny was I believe we should put it in law that if you get invited to dinner, it's okay to ask the person inviting you who else you invited before you accept.
00:38:18.960 --> 00:38:23.760
But he went on all these grievances about the all right, people will have to check out Larry David.
00:38:23.920 --> 00:38:26.400
But he was talking, where the hell was I going with that one?
00:38:26.559 --> 00:38:27.280
Holy moly.
00:38:27.519 --> 00:38:31.679
But oh, he goes, Grow me your beard or do it something when you're old.
00:38:31.760 --> 00:38:35.039
He goes, We were designed to be 37 years old and die.
00:38:35.519 --> 00:38:38.639
But we're talking about we had enough time here on the bench.
00:38:38.880 --> 00:38:40.239
We did have a nice time on the bench.
00:38:40.480 --> 00:38:42.239
I think I called a recent show The Random Show.
00:38:42.320 --> 00:38:44.559
I think I'm gonna call this one everything and the kitchen sink.
00:38:44.639 --> 00:38:45.679
And the kitchen sink.
00:38:45.760 --> 00:38:50.800
And but it's fun to be on the bench, so I hope you guys enjoy listening and we'll be back.
00:38:50.960 --> 00:38:53.440
We'll be back soon, and we'll have a good time.
00:38:53.519 --> 00:38:54.639
Thank you, my friend Carlos.
00:38:54.800 --> 00:38:56.079
All right, Carlos and Hammer.
00:38:56.239 --> 00:39:11.119
Oh watching all the world go by now underneath the sky now, take it for the law.
