We finish the Gospel of Mark by sitting with the brutality of the cross and the shock of the empty tomb, even when it’s nowhere near Easter. I push past abstract belief and ask what it means to live like we’re truly bought by Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection power.
• why the crucifixion and resurrection should not feel seasonal
• Jesus’ willing surrender as God’s plan rather than a trap
• Mark 15 details from Pilate to Barabbas to the mocking soldiers
• the tearing of the temple curtain and the centurion’s confession
• Mark 16 at the tomb, fear, testimony, and disbelief
• the call to go and proclaim and what belief demands of daily life
• answering the objection that the sacrifice was easier because Jesus would rise
• the deeper cost of leaving heaven to become human for us

00:00:11.800 --> 00:00:14.280
Welcome to the Out Loud Bible Podcast.
00:00:14.440 --> 00:00:15.400
This is Mike.
00:00:15.640 --> 00:00:21.880
If you've been with me for the past several episodes, you'll know we've been going through the Book of Mark, and we're already at the end.
00:00:22.039 --> 00:00:25.480
This is the last episode of this run-through of the Book of Mark.
00:00:25.560 --> 00:00:28.440
It's gone pretty quickly, but that I mean that is what the book does.
00:00:28.600 --> 00:00:34.280
This is the shortest gospel, the shortest biography of Jesus, but uh no less powerful.
00:00:34.519 --> 00:00:45.239
Mark really focuses on what Jesus did, and arguably the most important thing Jesus did was to give his life and to raise it up again.
00:00:45.480 --> 00:00:50.120
And that is what we cover today in Mark 15 and 16.
00:00:50.760 --> 00:00:57.480
I know these readings are often reserved for, you know, like Easter, Good Friday, and Easter.
00:00:57.640 --> 00:01:02.439
Uh, and likely when you're listening to this episode, it's not that time.
00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:06.200
And so it feels a little out of place sometimes, doesn't it?
00:01:06.439 --> 00:01:07.400
Why is that?
00:01:07.640 --> 00:01:19.560
Why do we feel a little, I don't know, uncomfortable or foreign reading Jesus' death and resurrection in some random, you know, weekday in September?
00:01:19.799 --> 00:01:25.240
This is the story we should be reminding ourselves of regularly, not just once a year.
00:01:25.719 --> 00:01:32.439
So as we read through this, I hope it's not just a downer, because I mean this is something worth celebrating.
00:01:32.600 --> 00:01:45.400
Uh we can celebrate his death, not because we're morbid, but because we know that that death is what made it possible for us to be right with God, which is totally worth celebrating and give him all the praise and glory for.
00:01:45.480 --> 00:01:48.040
And we know that he raises again.
00:01:48.280 --> 00:01:54.439
And uh and that death did not have the final say in his life, so it can't have the final say in our life.
00:01:54.600 --> 00:01:55.880
That's awesome.
00:01:56.120 --> 00:02:08.439
Uh, but let's sit with the gravity of the situation, you know, and and remind ourselves of of the atrocities that Jesus went through, that he willingly went through.
00:02:08.599 --> 00:02:13.079
Remember, I mentioned the last episode that Jesus laid his life down willingly.
00:02:13.240 --> 00:02:14.359
He said that of himself.
00:02:14.520 --> 00:02:16.680
And uh he was not the victim here.
00:02:17.159 --> 00:02:20.439
He uh he was not walking into anyone's trap.
00:02:20.599 --> 00:02:22.439
They were walking into God's plan.
00:02:22.519 --> 00:02:23.319
They didn't know it.
00:02:23.479 --> 00:02:25.639
If they had known, they probably wouldn't have done it.
00:02:25.959 --> 00:02:27.479
So they didn't know.
00:02:27.560 --> 00:02:30.119
And God accomplished what he wanted to accomplish.
00:02:30.439 --> 00:02:40.599
Jesus displayed the ultimate selflessness, the ultimate act of a servant to do what he did.
00:02:41.319 --> 00:02:49.799
And this reading, this passage should drive us to gratitude and should change our lives, not just, you know, one time being saved.
00:02:49.879 --> 00:02:53.719
This should change the way we go about our life, day in, day out.
00:02:53.959 --> 00:02:57.879
So let's take this time to remind ourselves what Jesus has done for us.
00:02:58.119 --> 00:03:12.119
Give him the praise and honor and glory for that, and not just say praise and honor and glory, but actually live a life that brings him glory and honor, the life that he allows us to live and is even possible based on what he did.
00:03:12.280 --> 00:03:12.919
Let's check it out.
00:03:13.079 --> 00:03:16.519
Mark 15 and 16 in the New English Translation.
00:03:16.840 --> 00:03:28.840
Well, early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests, with the elders and the experts in the law and the whole Sanhedrin, tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
00:03:29.079 --> 00:03:34.199
So Pilate asked him, Are you the king of the Jews?
00:03:34.679 --> 00:03:37.399
He replied, You say so.
00:03:37.879 --> 00:03:44.359
Well then the chief priests began to accuse him repeatedly, so Pilate asked him again, have you nothing to say?
00:03:44.679 --> 00:03:47.319
See how many charges they're bringing against you?
00:03:47.799 --> 00:03:52.759
But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.
00:03:53.639 --> 00:03:59.079
Well, during the feast it was customary to release one prisoner to the people, whomever they requested.
00:03:59.319 --> 00:04:05.879
A man named Barabbas was imprisoned with rebels who had committed murder during an insurrection.
00:04:06.119 --> 00:04:15.719
Then the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to release a prisoner for them, as was his custom, so Pilate asked them, Do you want me to release this king of the Jews for you?
00:04:15.959 --> 00:04:19.319
For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.
00:04:19.560 --> 00:04:25.240
But the chief priest stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas instead.
00:04:25.560 --> 00:04:27.319
So Pilate spoke to them again.
00:04:27.640 --> 00:04:31.480
Then what do you want me to do with the one you call King of the Jews?
00:04:31.720 --> 00:04:34.120
They shouted back crucify him.
00:04:34.600 --> 00:04:37.640
Pilate asked them why, what has he done wrong?
00:04:37.879 --> 00:04:47.240
But they shouted more insistently, crucify him, and because he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them.
00:04:47.640 --> 00:04:53.720
Then, after he had Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.
00:04:54.439 --> 00:05:10.759
So, the soldiers led him into the palace, that is, the governor's residence, and called together the whole cohort, and they put a purple cloak on him, and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on him, and they began to salute him.
00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:12.920
Hail, King of the Jews.
00:05:13.640 --> 00:05:22.200
Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him, and they knelt down and paid homage to him.
00:05:22.759 --> 00:05:32.920
When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him, and then they led him away to crucify him.
00:05:33.160 --> 00:05:40.360
The soldiers forced a passerby to carry his cross, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country.
00:05:40.520 --> 00:05:43.240
He was a father of Alexander and Rufus.
00:05:43.720 --> 00:05:46.120
By the way, what who is Alexander and Rufus?
00:05:46.360 --> 00:05:55.080
We don't know, but the people who were hearing the story first would have known, just placing this as a real situation with real people in a real context.
00:05:55.400 --> 00:05:56.759
We can trust that.
00:05:57.000 --> 00:06:02.920
Well, they brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which is translated place of the skull.
00:06:03.400 --> 00:06:08.040
They offered him wine, mixed with myrrh, but he didn't take it.
00:06:08.280 --> 00:06:16.520
And then they crucified him, and divided his clothes, throwing dice for them to decide what each would take.
00:06:16.759 --> 00:06:25.720
It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him, and the inscription of the charge against him read The King of the Jews.
00:06:27.160 --> 00:06:42.360
And they crucified two outlaws with him, one on his right and one on his left, and those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying, Ah, you who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself.
00:06:42.600 --> 00:06:44.600
Come down from the cross.
00:06:44.920 --> 00:06:51.960
In the same way, even the chief priests, together with the experts in the law, were mocking him among themselves.
00:06:52.439 --> 00:06:55.240
He saved others, but he cannot save himself.
00:06:55.480 --> 00:07:01.800
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now that we may see and believe.
00:07:02.439 --> 00:07:06.280
Those who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him.
00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:28.439
And now when it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, and around three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eli Eli, I'm a Sabakfani, which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
00:07:29.720 --> 00:07:34.520
And when one of the bystanders heard it, they said, Well, listen, he's calling for Elijah.
00:07:34.759 --> 00:07:41.800
Then someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, Leave him alone.
00:07:42.120 --> 00:07:45.080
Let's see if Elijah will come to take him down.
00:07:45.720 --> 00:07:50.920
But Jesus cried out with a loud voice and breathed his last.
00:07:52.280 --> 00:07:56.920
And the temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom.
00:07:57.319 --> 00:08:05.480
Now when the centurion who stood in front of him saw how he died, he said, Truly this man was God's son.
00:08:06.280 --> 00:08:16.280
There were also women watching from a distance, among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James the Younger and of Joseph, and Salome.
00:08:16.759 --> 00:08:23.560
When he was in Galilee, they had followed him and given him support, and many other women who had come up to Jerusalem were there too.
00:08:23.720 --> 00:08:41.240
Now when evening had come, since it was the day of preparation, that is the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a highly regarded member of the council, who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
00:08:41.799 --> 00:08:44.120
Pilate was surprised that he was already dead.
00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:47.480
He called the centurion and asked him if he had been dead for some time.
00:08:47.800 --> 00:08:52.120
When Pilate was informed by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
00:08:52.279 --> 00:08:59.720
After Joseph bought a linen cloth and took down the body, he wrapped it in the linen and placed it in a tomb cut out of the rock.
00:08:59.960 --> 00:09:02.840
Then he rolled a stone across the entrance of the tomb.
00:09:03.159 --> 00:09:07.639
Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joseph, saw where the body was placed.
00:09:08.039 --> 00:09:30.600
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and Salome, bought aromatic spices so that they may go and anoint him, and very early on the first day of the week, at sunrise they went to the tomb, and they had been asking each other who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb.
00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:37.879
But when they looked up, they saw that the stone which was very large had been rolled back.
00:09:38.279 --> 00:09:46.519
Then as they went into the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
00:09:46.759 --> 00:09:48.840
But he said to them, Don't be alarmed.
00:09:49.080 --> 00:09:52.759
You're looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified.
00:09:53.080 --> 00:09:54.279
He's been raised.
00:09:54.519 --> 00:09:55.320
He's not here.
00:09:55.480 --> 00:09:57.800
Look, there's the place where they laid him.
00:09:58.120 --> 00:10:04.120
But go, tell his disciples, even Peter, that he's going ahead of you into Galilee.
00:10:04.440 --> 00:10:06.920
You'll see him there just as he told you.
00:10:07.240 --> 00:10:17.080
And then they went out and ran from the tomb, for terror and bewilderment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
00:10:18.039 --> 00:10:29.240
Early on the first day of the week after he arose he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had driven out seven demons, and she went out and told those who were with him while they were mourning and weeping.
00:10:29.399 --> 00:10:33.639
And when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they didn't believe.
00:10:34.120 --> 00:10:54.440
After this he appeared in a different form to two of them while they were on the way to the country, and they went back and told the rest, but they didn't believe them, and then he appeared to the eleven themselves while they were eating, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they didn't believe those who had seen him resurrected.
00:10:54.840 --> 00:11:00.600
He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
00:11:00.840 --> 00:11:06.759
The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who doesn't believe will be condemned.
00:11:07.080 --> 00:11:09.879
And these signs will accompany those who believe.
00:11:10.039 --> 00:11:22.759
In my name they will drive out demons, they'll speak in new languages, they'll pick up snakes with their hands, and whatever poison they drink won't harm them, and they'll place their hands on the sick, and they'll be well.
00:11:23.159 --> 00:11:32.440
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
00:11:33.240 --> 00:11:41.000
They went out and proclaimed everywhere while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through the accompanying signs.
00:11:42.519 --> 00:11:45.399
And that is the end of the book of Mark.
00:11:46.759 --> 00:11:49.879
Well, Jesus came and did what he needed to do.
00:11:50.600 --> 00:11:52.759
Are you and I doing what we need to do?
00:11:53.320 --> 00:12:13.320
If we believe this, if we believe Mark to be a reliable account based on eyewitness testimonies just like the disciples had eyewitness testimonies that Jesus raised from the dead, but frankly they didn't believe it, and it's kind of easy for us to not really believe it, too, being two thousand years removed.
00:12:14.519 --> 00:12:25.480
But if we do really believe this, then we have to believe that he bought us with his blood, with his death, purchased us.
00:12:25.639 --> 00:12:26.840
We're his now.
00:12:27.080 --> 00:12:29.320
And so our life is not our own.
00:12:30.279 --> 00:12:32.840
We don't get to just live how we want.
00:12:33.879 --> 00:12:35.320
No one's truly free.
00:12:35.399 --> 00:12:38.200
You're either a slave to sin or a slave to Jesus.
00:12:38.920 --> 00:12:40.360
Pick your master.
00:12:40.680 --> 00:12:48.920
But what we read today should compel us to live all the more as a slave for Jesus based on what he did.
00:12:50.039 --> 00:12:58.440
Serving him with eager hearts and willing hearts, not out of compulsion, but as a life of gratitude for his sacrifice.
00:12:58.759 --> 00:13:04.120
Some people will say, well, how much of a sacrifice was it really if he knew that he was gonna rise from the dead again?
00:13:04.440 --> 00:13:05.720
Have you thought about that?
00:13:06.920 --> 00:13:12.920
Was it really a sacrifice if he's God and he was he knew he was gonna rise again?
00:13:13.080 --> 00:13:15.000
Like death wasn't gonna be the end for him.
00:13:15.159 --> 00:13:16.519
How much of a sacrifice was it?
00:13:16.600 --> 00:13:17.480
I've heard that.
00:13:17.800 --> 00:13:25.399
And yes, while we can take a look at the circumstances of his life on earth, like I mean, he lived in relative obscurity.
00:13:25.800 --> 00:13:30.360
He developed a few close friends, one of them betrayed him.
00:13:30.600 --> 00:13:43.720
Then he was beaten, he was mocked, he was killed, he faced resistance his entire ministry, and it just culminated into this absolute just mockery of a trial and brutal execution.
00:13:44.279 --> 00:13:50.519
I mean, that is that is sacrifice, but I don't think that was even the greatest sacrifice.
00:13:51.399 --> 00:13:52.440
Bear with me.
00:13:52.759 --> 00:14:01.560
Because after our reading today, we read that Jesus, after all these things, he rose back to heaven and sat right back down on the right hand of the throne of God.
00:14:01.800 --> 00:14:03.639
That's where he belongs.
00:14:03.879 --> 00:14:14.920
That's where he was before coming to earth, with all the comforts of heaven, with all the privileges and power and authority of being God in heaven.
00:14:15.639 --> 00:14:21.080
I think the biggest sacrifice is that he gave all of that up to become human in the first place.
00:14:23.159 --> 00:14:28.920
He gave up all of the privileges of heaven to become like us because he loved us so much.
00:14:29.080 --> 00:14:31.639
He wanted to be with us and walk with us.
00:14:32.279 --> 00:14:33.879
Show us the Father.
00:14:34.120 --> 00:14:36.279
And what did we give him in return?
00:14:36.759 --> 00:14:37.960
Death penalty.
00:14:38.200 --> 00:14:42.920
To say, well, he knew he was going to rise from the dead, how much of a sacrifice was it really?
00:14:43.080 --> 00:14:52.440
I think demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of how much he gave up for us in the first place to come down from his throne in heaven.
00:14:52.519 --> 00:14:53.960
He didn't need to do that.
00:14:54.600 --> 00:14:58.920
To become one of us, and then to go through all the things that we put him through.
00:14:59.240 --> 00:15:20.600
For his unconditional, completely selfless love to be met with mockery and persecution, betrayal, denial, brutality, for his last moments to be strung up alongside two criminals as one of them, and to be taunted.
00:15:20.759 --> 00:15:23.639
Well, you you the son of God, why don't you save yourself?
00:15:23.879 --> 00:15:26.120
He could have, but he didn't.
00:15:27.159 --> 00:15:29.720
Talk about restraint and self-sacrifice.
00:15:30.120 --> 00:15:36.600
He could have been thinking about how nice and comfy his throne next to God is up in heaven, but he was thinking about you and me.
00:15:38.440 --> 00:15:39.240
Come on.
00:15:40.039 --> 00:15:41.159
Talk about sacrifice.
00:15:41.399 --> 00:15:42.200
Gee whiz.
00:15:43.080 --> 00:15:45.480
Praise Jesus for his sacrifice.
00:15:46.840 --> 00:15:48.200
We're his now.
00:15:49.159 --> 00:15:50.360
Let's go live like it.
00:15:50.840 --> 00:15:51.960
That's the thinking out loud.
00:15:52.039 --> 00:15:52.759
Thought for the day.
00:15:53.000 --> 00:15:54.759
Thanks for joining me here in the book of Mark.
00:15:54.840 --> 00:15:56.279
I hope it's been a blessing to you.
00:15:56.519 --> 00:15:59.320
And we'll see you next time on the Out Loud Bible Podcast.
