What happens when we only hear one story about a person, a community, a culture, or even ourselves?
Welcome back to Season 2 of Off The Syllabus: The Liberated Dreams Podcast and class is officially back in session. In this episode, Dev and Ms. Kam take a moment to reflect on Season 1, the lessons they carried into the offseason, and the ways their own experiences continue to shape how they understand education, identity, leadership, and liberation.
This episode invites us to slow down and reflect before moving forward. Through conversations about personal growth, responsibility, rest, leadership, youth development, learning outside of traditional classrooms, and the stories we tell about young people, Dev and Ms. Kam explore what it means to challenge assumptions and make room for complexity.
At the heart of the conversation is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's powerful TED Talk, "The Danger of a Single Story."The discussion asks us to consider how a single narrative can flatten people into stereotypes, rob them of dignity, and make it harder to recognize our shared humanity.
Stories matter. And so do the stories we leave out.
If we want to create better learning environments, stronger communities, and more liberated futures for young people, we have to be willing to move beyond the stories we have been given and seek the many stories that make up who people really are.
What single story have you been taught about yourself, someone else, or a community that you now realize was incomplete?
Off The Syllabus is where education meets real life. We bring literature, lived experiences, research, culture, and community conversations into the classroom to examine the systems shaping young people and the future.
Class is in session. Your syllabus has officially been remixed.
