How To Make A Comeback Career In A COVID-19 World

NBC News shares tips on how to make a comeback career during a global pandemic.

The thought of changing careers or making a comeback career seems impossible during a global pandemic. Career expert Liz Bently shares the best strategies for changing and evolving your career. Here’s a summary of the piece.

Ageism

The book “Comeback Career” by sisters Mika and Ginny Brzezinski is targeted at individuals in their 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s ready to make a comeback and reinvent their careers. The Brzezinski sisters explain that age is an advantage. In order to be successful in your career, you must turn off ageism in your mind.

Reinvent Your Career

Review your career path and make changes in order to evolve. Continue to be resilient, especially during these unprecedented times.

Growth Mindset

Embrace a growth mindset and you will evolve. Let go of past conditioning by:

1. Identifying the source of what is holding you back.
2. Recognize and understand why it is holding you back.
3. Let go.

Confidence

Having confidence when approaching a new career path is essential. New employers will easily be able to notice if you are not confident. A good tip for gaining confidence during a career transition is to visualize and manifest what you want. Know your worth and pinpoint your transferable skills.

However, it is important to remember there is a difference between having confidence and being too confident. Liz Bently shares in an interview the difference between having a good and bad ego in the workforce.

Evolving With New Technology and Communication Skills

It is crucial for everyone, no matter their age, to be technically current. As times continue to change, so does technology and communication. Being able to effectively communicate with your co-workers is key during these new work-from-home conditions. Bently writes “ If you’re a Millennial, that means you need to be able to talk on the phone; if you’re a Gen Xer, stop overusing email; and if you’re a Boomer, be able to text for work and stop thinking it’s a big deal.”

The Future

Always be planning ahead for the future. Think to yourself ‘What will still be relevant this time next year?’ You must create a mindset that is constantly evolving.
