Speaker 2: Anonobi stares at the rim rethrow away good four point lea seven seconds to go ninety four ninety New York Fox with five gives it to Wemby.
00:00:32
Speaker 3: Wemby floats for three no good.
00:00:34
Speaker 4: With one second ago. It's over have long last. For the first time in fifty three years. The New York Knicks are the world champs fifty three seasons. A generational drought is over, and Jalen Brunson leads them with forty five points, embracing his assistant coach Dad Writt in tears Nicks ninety four San Antonia nineties. The Knicks are the twenty twenty six NBA champions.
00:01:06
Speaker 5: Mike Breen with the final call, ending the drought. Fifty three years without the New York Knicks winning a championship, and it took Mike Brown letting the dogs out out in New York for the Knicks to bring back that title to the city of New York and joining me now on the Murph and Marcus Show, or I guess today it's just a Marcus show.
00:01:27
Speaker 3: It's Marcus and Marcus.
00:01:28
Speaker 5: Marcus Thompson joining me from I believe back in the Bay Area after covering the NBA Finals.
00:01:34
Speaker 3: Marcus, what's up brother? How are you doing this morning?
00:01:38
Speaker 6: Man? I should be in New York getting ready for his parade, but I had to come home.
00:01:42
Speaker 3: Well, I was gonna ask to.
00:01:43
Speaker 6: Be on top of a burning bus.
00:01:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
00:01:46
Speaker 5: We talked a couple weeks ago about maybe potentially buying a Latrell Spreewell jersey and a couple other things, but not in the the parade plans for this Thursday Hullmarcus.
00:01:57
Speaker 6: Nah, And uh, you know I could. I could credit Yeah, NYPD, you know, the City of New York Secret Service for taking the watch parties away from MSG right outside of ten stations. So that's that's where I wanted to be. But uh, to my my eyes, they canceled all that and I wasn't going to Bryant Park. That's too far interview You feel me?
00:02:22
Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel you on that one.
00:02:23
Speaker 5: And it did seem like the NBA tried to stretch his game out the six series, but the Knicks were able to win in five. But Marcus Leitz, that's about that atmosphere Dan in San Antonio. It felt like there were a lot of Knicks fans in the building. How was the celebration and what was it like watching the Knicks and that fifty three year drought?
00:02:40
Speaker 6: Yeah, it was. It was crazy. It felt very It felt like how the Warriors did people right where you know you hear Steph you know, hit a three and it be just be louder cheers for the whole team. And they really took over Dan Antonio. And you don't really see that in the NBA Finals even with the Warriors. You don't see them takeover uh finals right on the road that they did. They were They were crazy in the in the concourts, right, they brought their own version of you know, the trees with them, so you can smell it in a way they probably San Antonio doesn't you just smell it was just it was rockets, right, it was. It was wild. It was very very New York Nick right, very just like over the top, like mainy and just uncontrollable. It was. It was pretty cool to witness because you know, say what you want, man about New York, the Knicks are like everybody's like cool team, right, Like you gotta even the Piston san of your bulls. But you just don't have a reason to hate the Knicks because they haven't been good enough to hate them. Oh, it's just it's just cool to watch a franchise in the drought in the same way it was for like the Cubs and the Red Siene.
00:03:50
Speaker 5: Yeah, And I got to say, being here in the Bay Area, from that perspective, it was great to see Mike Brown lead this team. Obviously his connection with the Warriors, and then after everything went down in Sacramento and now he's singing Baja men who let the Dogs out on stage holding the championship trophy. Now, Marcus, I know you have a great relationship with Mike Brown. So have you been able to have some conversations about what it's like for him to win a win a championship for the city of New York.
00:04:13
Speaker 6: Oh? Yeah, he's feeling it. He's living up you know, Mike. Mike Brown is a very confident man, right, He's he's been through enough things, He's been around enough great people. He knows exactly who he is and who he needs to be right, and now he's got a title. So you take this man who who's been making money off multiple teams for years, right, I like to call them money earner, Mike Brown. Mike, Mike knows how to get some money. So now he's a legend. Uh, it's just interesting asking if he was gonna if he was gonna take his Harley ride this summer, He's like, I don't know, he might not. He might party too hard in New York this summer. But yeah, this is great. This is great for Mike. This is the guy who remember lost in the finals with Lebron. He's been fired, he's been an assistant, he's coached superstars like, he's coached bad teams like, he's been through it all. So to see him reached his pinnacle was pretty cool.
00:05:10
Speaker 5: Yeah, it definitely seems like he's going to be remembered as a legend in New York, and so is Jalen Brunton. After his Game five performance forty five points takes home the MVP Trophy, Marcus just talked to us about what Jalen Brunson now means to the city of New York. Has he put himself on the Mount New York Rushmore of greatest athletes of all time because he's able to win a championship for a team that was so desperate for one.
00:05:31
Speaker 6: I think he has and I think Knicks basketball is different, like the Yankees have won so much. And you know, there's two teams in baseball teams in New York. It's not like Lakers in Clippers, right, or Nix and Mets, where nobody cares about the other teams. People do care about the Mets, right. Some people still have some Mets history on them. So even though it's probably like eighty five fifteen, there's still a Mets fan. They stare, you know, Queen's rocks with the Mets, like you get it with the Knicks. That is, everybody's seen like nobody cares about the Mets to New York. So to me, he gets on Mount Rushmore just by virtue of the the size of the fan bax that he came through for he delivered for franchise where all of New York. And you gotta think too, there's there's nine million people in Manhattan, but how many New York's Berance plants across this nation? Or Knicks fans and they're waiting for this, like he created a moment for them that it's gonna be tough to match. It's Mariano Rivera right, like it's closing out with its cutter in the bottom of the night. Like you aren't finding too many of those moments. I think he even surpasses Eli Manning, even though Eli Manning went two Super Bowls, just because you got the Giants and the Jet. Everybody in New York is a Knicks fan, and now everybody now beloves Jalen brother. That's hard to top.
00:07:00
Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's why I thought there was no question that he was the MVP after that Game five performance, forty five points, thirteen straight in the fourth quarter.
00:07:06
Speaker 3: But we did have Sam Ammick on last week and he said that you.
00:07:09
Speaker 5: Two were having a couple of debates about whether or not should be CAT or maybe even OG as a series MVP. Did you have any issues with Jalen Brunston taking on that trophy?
00:07:18
Speaker 6: Nah, I was the one ride with Jalen Bruston. I thought they were crazy and said it was CAT to me. That was the fun debate we had, you know, I felt like it was a Seth Curry situation. Happened in the game twenty fifteen where it's like Cars in the Towns was playing well, but all the stuff is centered on Jalen Brunston, right, and then he came through, and you know in two games down the stretch he came through. So that was kind of the debate. Do you overlook Jalen Brunt's low field goal percentage and the fact that he and focused on the fact that he came through the clutch like he always does, or do you validate Cars in the Towns for having really good games playing well against win even though he didn't do anything in the fourth quoiter. But og entered the picture after game four because after that he has this incredible two play sequence that might be one of the most defined in this history. And he also had really good numbers. He's de fision, he scored well, he played good defense. But I'm with you, but after game five, it's unquestionable like the way he I mean, he literally said I got this. Every action was Dayalen bruston every time that everything that happened was because of him, especially in the second half once they got down and he's taken on this incredible defense with the defensive Player of the Year. He doesn't have another creator. He's six foot two and he goes and drops forty five like there's no debate. I feel like it was a good conversation. I could see Og, I could see Jalen after Game five, There's no debate. Dylan Bruston was a pun of the VV.
00:08:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, especially after the first two games.
00:08:53
Speaker 5: I could entertain the debate between Cat, Jalen or even Og because of what Kat was able to do offensively and defensely against Wemby.
00:09:00
Speaker 3: But let's talk about that fallout of the story, because.
00:09:03
Speaker 5: It seems like the perception has changed a little bit on Wemby, not just his postgame comments about how he felt the Spurs dominated a majority of the series, but also some people are now criticizing him for not shaking hands with the Knicks after the game. Marcus, where are you at with Wenby after seeing him lose his first NBA finals?
00:09:20
Speaker 6: Yeah, Wenby's gotta he's gotta grow up a bit in this league, right, And the reason the reason you love him, the reason he's like great and you feel like he's going to be back, is because he has this edge to him, right, He's just he don't mind starting pobblems, right, he doesn't mind flirting the line between like aggressive and dirty. Like he's about it, and he's very temperamental. You could kind of see he remember when when USA lost, he was out there. You could tell he felt it. It hurt him. He's an emotional dude who like is really in it, and he's bent on becoming a great player. But he's got to learn how to do that in a way that fects his peers. And there's a time on of tradition at the end of the finals the great players Greek and like he's not above that, right. The thing that he's trying to become head of is this league. He wants to be the face of and dominate. He wants to be the greatest forever. Like part of that is being an ambassador and respecting the other people like Jalen Brunson and and women. Yama was supposed to have a moment it maybe it might be kind of awkward, Marcus, Right, seven to five guys put through that is a little different, like how you do it. I was curious to see how I have it right. But yeah, he does some things that make you wonder, where's his head at you know, obviously he's very thoughtful, then shoot and temple thing. You know, he's a smart player, is very high IQ, but he gets a little away from himself. So I do feel like he just got to grow up, and the finals will grow you up fast. So let's see if he learns his left and comes back, you know, more of a fine player who's ready to handle the moment.
00:11:04
Speaker 5: Yeah, and we saw a couple of dirty plays between Wenby and Jalen Brunton. They shoved down earlier in the series and then the no call on what should have been a flagrant when he closed out on Jalen. Now, of course that would have led to a potential game six suspension. Doesn't matter because they never got the game six. But Marcus, your thoughts on the officiating and maybe the NBA trying to protect Wenby in that situation.
00:11:26
Speaker 6: I don't know that they were trying to protect that thing. I think Jalen Brunston has a reputation for flopping right, and they didn't know if they if he kicked his leg out or not. And it's tough in those situations because you force a team to burn a challenge or something obvious. I think they just missed the call. I think they just flat out missed it. The interesting part would have been, if there is a game six, do they retroactively give the flagrant it deserves? And I really hope they wouldn't have. I really hope they would have let it set it on the court, because it was just and terrible for Wenby to get suspended on the points rule like post like post game, right after the game on the next day. It's just I don't think that's the way it should work out. So the NBA got spared big time by Jaylen Brusty, because that's all we're talking about today. Either Winby got suspended and basically handed the titles to Mix or Winby didn't get suspended, and it's a setup for Webby. Like either way, they don't shit that talking point.
00:12:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, and instead we're talking about the Knicks not only beating the Spurs in the championship.
00:12:35
Speaker 3: Marcus, don't forget about that.
00:12:36
Speaker 5: NBA Cup win earlier this season also, And I should tell everybody that this conversation with Marcus Thompson is sponsored by Red Reid Credit Union for you for community for seventy five years. Join ORCU today at Redwood, Seu dot Org and Marcus before we let you go outside of the NBA Finals, you know, it's NBA offseason, rumor season. People are talking about Joannis potentially going to the Celtics or the Heat. But I did want to ask you about Bill Simmons saying that he would bet his life that Lebron James is on the Warriors next season.
00:13:05
Speaker 6: Yeah, you hear a lot of smoke. It's a lot of the talk. I'm very curious to see how this goes down money wise, because their their biggest problem is they got to get through an eighty two game season, and you need young players to do that, and to add another forty year old player, you know, or another player who's gonna need twenty games off to be max. Like, if you want to do a playoff run, you got to be healthy in April. That's their only shot. They got to be healthy in April. So if they give him the mid level exception, it will fit, you know, wherever that money is. That means they can't use that to get another player. So it's interesting. I'd be surprised. I'd be surprised if they do it because they're committing to the oldest roster probably the NBA history, and they still don't have an answer for how to keep these guys healthy. You know, perhaps le Bron plays and then when Jimmy comes back, Bron's out and Jimmy played, like maybe maybe they got some kind of play. I'd love it more if you took the minimum and you can now use that tip, that salary slot to get somebody else. But there's a lot of smoke here, but you always got a question. Whenever it's that that much smoke, somebody set up something for something else. So I still think Cleveland is in the mix. I still think staying with the Lakers is in themates. In the end of the Lakers gonna let this guy walk and go to the to the Warriors that it's tough, but Lebron for the minimum would be the biggest coop of Warriors can get.
00:14:35
Speaker 3: If Lebron does come to the Warriors, does he have to bring Bronny with him.
00:14:42
Speaker 6: I don't think so. I don't think so. I think I think if Bronnie is in the league, he's a player right like he's got I think Lebron's done its part. Would the Warriors do it just to appease them. I'm sure they could, but they don't have any They don't have any rush responts. They need players, yes, maybe players who can play right now, maybe players who could play fifty games right. They need players who could say, step Raymond, you off tonight. I got this. I don't know if Broni is that type of player yet. So I also think Bronni is established as he's in the NBA. He's on a roster, like, you know, he's very popular, like he can do his own thing. He probably he might even want to not be connected to his dad. He probably want to be on his own team with.
00:15:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, a lot of moving parts this summer in the NBA between Lebron, Bronni, Kawhi, Jannis, plenty of topics to dive into as we paced through this summer. And Marcus just enjoy a couple off days, you know, and get rid of that jet leg and welcome back to the Bay Area.
00:15:44
Speaker 3: Brother. Things are hopping on this day.
00:15:47
Speaker 6: Oh man, it's been a long time. I'm glad to be home. Confident Valkyries, baby, that's it.
00:15:52
Speaker 3: Big win last night in the NBA Commissioner.
00:15:54
Speaker 5: Cup for the Valkyries. Marcus appreciate my man. We'll talk to you in a couple of weeks.
00:15:58
Speaker 6: All right, he's out there.
00:16:00
Speaker 5: Is Marcus Thompson, fresh off the NBA Finals and speaking off the NBA Finals. Let's wrap up the show with the Cooler of Content, where we do have some sound from Draymond Green given his thoughts on Wemby not shaking hands with the Knicks and also the Knicks being all over the place. Good Morning America. The Jimmy Follon Show last night, some really good audio from the Knicks celebrating their championship and Draymond Green criticizing Wemby for not shaking hands after the NBA Finals. We'll dive into that sound in more next right here on the Murphy Marcus Show on the Sports Leader AMBR sports Leader.
00:16:35
Speaker 1: All right, everyone, Jill, this is the cooler.
00:16:39
Speaker 6: He's beating.
00:16:40
Speaker 7: A cooler of content corner, capacious of joyful news.
00:16:45
Speaker 2: Might be all thet done.
00:16:47
Speaker 1: Murphin Marcus is sponsored by Bigelot, Grab a mug and t proudly.
00:16:53
Speaker 5: Oh all right, crazy to day today on the Murph and Marcus Show, or should I just say the show, but you know it's time for the cook Cook cooler of content, my baby. Back when I was still producing this show, Murph said, I need a sound segment. MiB has this creative audio segment. I don't know what the hell was called. I said, Murf, you call me the water boy. That means I'm gonna bring you the cooler of content. And of course we should tell you that the cooler of content is always sponsored by Marin Health with top physicians, surgeons and clinicians right here in the North Bay. Marine Health puts you closer to your best health, world class care, closer than you think. And I'm looking at the clock right now, Walt, let's get a quick audible and just go straight into the cooler of content.
00:17:40
Speaker 3: I tease this sound.
00:17:41
Speaker 5: On the other side with Marcus Thompson, we talked about maybe a little bit of immaturity from Victor Webbin Yama after he refused to shake the hands of Jalen Brunson and the Knicks after losing Game five of the NBA Finals on his home court. Here was Draymond Green on the Draymond Green Podcast, of course, talking about Wenby refusing to look his killer in the eye.
00:18:08
Speaker 8: Look your killer in the face, look your killer in the face. You gotta look them in their face. By the way, if you lead a court and you don't look me in my face and I just beat you, I actually know that I own you forever because you couldn't even look me in the face. And so to see them walk off the court, it was disheartened. And we I'll blame it on you. I'll blame it on lacking the leader to show them that, hey, this is what you do, not walk off. I'll blame it on that. I'll blame it on that, lacking the leadership, the leader to show them the no, no, no, there's a way to win, and there's a way to lose. There's a way to win, and there's a way to lose. And walking off the court not looking your killer in his eyes ain't the way to lose.
00:19:01
Speaker 3: Hmm.
00:19:02
Speaker 5: Interesting perspector from Draymond Green, who has been on both sides of that story. Winning an NBA championship and losing an NBA Championship and him calling out not just Wemby but the entire Spurs team. I think showing a lack of experience and not knowing how to lose the problem is they also don't know how to win. Down the stretch, because they did lead the NBA for about seventy two to seventy four percent of the total time in the NBA Finals, but they could not close out games in the fourth quarter, and I think that shows a lot of lack of experience. Now, I will give some credit to Mitch Johnson, who did walk over and shake the hands of Jalen Brunson and.
00:19:40
Speaker 3: Mike Brown after the game.
00:19:42
Speaker 5: He's a thirty nine year old young coach, but we saw some of the inexperience with some of his coaching decisions and him blowing a twenty nine point lead while his team was out there shooting eight straight miss three pointers with a twenty point lead in the NBA Finals. To me, that shows a lot of lack of experience and maybe a lack of maturity for this extremely young Spurs team. Now, if you're asking me personally, I don't care too much. I wasn't offended by wemby not shaking hands, but I also understand the argument.
00:20:13
Speaker 3: When you're the leader of that team, when.
00:20:15
Speaker 5: You're possibly the future face of the franchise, it's a bad look that you're not shaking hands after that series. I mean, I've mentioned this a few times before when we talk about this topic. Everybody knows I'm a huge boxing MMA fan. These guys hate each other. These guys say outrageous stuff off the cuff, and then the fight ends and they always shake each other hands.
00:20:36
Speaker 3: Now, there's a case every once in a while where.
00:20:38
Speaker 5: There's a brawl or something going on like that shout out Hasmat SHAMAIV and Dylan Dannis's past weekend at the Real American Freestyle Championships. But outside of that, I do think that you do need to step up in that situation, as tough as it is, and maybe just bite your tongue, shake hands, and move on, because then you can just move on from this entire topic and you don't have to answer these questions.
00:21:01
Speaker 3: Now, Walter, I want you to look me in the eye. Look you're killer in the eye.
00:21:04
Speaker 5: Do you have any issues with Wemby in the Spurs not shaking hands after Game five of the finals.
00:21:09
Speaker 9: I don't actually because Wemby, I mean, I like that chip on the shoulder right Like I kind of like his villain arc that he's taking right now. Obviously it's going against the Knicks, so it's kind of magnified to a different, different degree, but like I like that, like I you know, we're not all friends at the end of the day, you know what I mean. I want to ask you, like, would if you were Wemby in that situation, would you have walked up to Brunson and Kat the team that just took a title away from you at twenty one years old? Would you have shape shook the hands of those guys in that moment?
00:21:42
Speaker 3: Honestly, I wouldn't want to do it, but that's just me. I know, I'm an a a ahole. I know I'm a d bag. Like truly, I wouldn't want to do it, but I wouldn't either. I wouldn't either.
00:21:51
Speaker 5: I also hope that there was a veteran on the team, like I'm sure Murph would tell me, you do gotta shake hands, stick to little league Murph, Like, of course that's the true. I heard Jay Williams Juster say shaking hands is for little leaguers, Like, no, it's still part of the game, it's part of the respect. So I would have hoped that there would have been somebody in my locker room, in my corner who would have just pointed me in the right direction, who knows if I would have listened or who knows how that scenario would have played out. But that's why I do think that the Spurs do need some more leadership. You know who they need in the locker room. A guy like Mike Brown. Hell, maybe a guy like Steve Kerr if he's looking for a new job post Steph Curry. Hey, I'm just saying, I'm just putting that out there now, but let's check in with Mike Brown, who let the dogs out over the weekend. Hell, the entire NBA playoff runs, and I really can't tell you how happy I am for Mike Brown, who, of course we know was an assistant coach with the Warriors, was getting candles charged to his hotel room, ended up with the Sacramento Kings, took them to the playoffs, actually knocked the Warriors out of the playoffs one season, and then he gets fired and the Knicks and Leon Rose made the decision after going to the Eastern Conference finals with Tibbs to.
00:23:00
Speaker 3: Bring in Mike Brown.
00:23:01
Speaker 5: And we know that Mike Brown is a culture changer, and it felt like he changed the culture with the New York Knicks, and that included the culture.
00:23:09
Speaker 3: Of the Baja man. Check this out.
00:23:11
Speaker 5: This was Mike Brown last night with Jalen Brunson and Karl Anthony Towns on The Jimmy Fallon Show, explaining the origin story of who let the Dogs out?
00:23:20
Speaker 3: Who let the Dogs out? By the Baha men? Why is that? We gotta put that to bed? Yeah? Where did that come from? Was that something? This is the story?
00:23:34
Speaker 8: So I got two boys, you know what, we need the story as well.
00:23:37
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:23:39
Speaker 7: I was an assistant San Antonio many moons ago. The reporter that asked me a question, he said, what did you learn during your time here when you coached the seven year old Dogs flag football team? Ah? And so I said, I said, I learned to cheer because we used to have all the parents come into the huddle, all the kids come in the huddle before every game. We put put their hands in, right, all right, we're gonna practice, and everybody to do this.
00:24:03
Speaker 10: Put your hands in, put your hands in.
00:24:05
Speaker 3: And then I'd go.
00:24:05
Speaker 11: One, two, three, I go loot the dogs.
00:24:22
Speaker 1: To walk out. Not to walk out.
00:24:25
Speaker 3: Stop doing it. I won't do it anymore. So not to walk After that.
00:24:29
Speaker 10: After that day, I'm going back to the hotel thinking everything is good right, okay, and the players walk off the bus first, every one of them that walk by me tap me on my shoulder and kill.
00:24:40
Speaker 7: He was the toughest on me, he was to they killed me. And I will say one player, one player on our team.
00:24:46
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:24:47
Speaker 7: He tap my back, rubbed my shoulder. He looked down at me, gave me the just just a sorry, just a sorry felt look, and he said, don't worry about the coach. It was mkil Bridges kill.
00:25:00
Speaker 3: But kids, check up here.
00:25:01
Speaker 4: He got your baby, yes, he got.
00:25:06
Speaker 8: Can we talk about how we have compared me at thirty.
00:25:09
Speaker 6: To a seven year old?
00:25:09
Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, it's comparison.
00:25:16
Speaker 5: Yeah, act your shoe size, not your age. Karl Anthony Towns. For anybody not watching the video right now live on twitch, on YouTube or streaming through the k and be or app, just a hilarious visual of Karl Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson like kind of trying to hide their head in their hands. It gives me major vibes like Walter, you can check in on this when you have like a drunk uncle out a barbecue and he just goes off and starts singing karaoke and it is like somebody, whose man is this?
00:25:41
Speaker 3: Whose uncles is you?
00:25:43
Speaker 9: Definitely been into one of my barbecues, but yeah, one percent that is uh. We are Jalen Brunson and Kat on the couch just like, oh dude, when's this gonna start.
00:25:51
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a little embarrassing, but you gotta embrace it, your NBA chims. And that's what I love about this Nick squad. It feels like they truly have all embraced each other, not just the Villanova guys, not just mikel Bridges who stood up for Mike Brown right there and the who let the dogs out chant, but you look at Josh Hard Jalen Brunson, like what a unit they are after winning a championship ten years ago at Villanova, now they win it at the NBA level. Then you throw in Cat the big Bodega himself and the rest of the guys, Og and Anobi. We got to talk about his performance, not just in Game four and the twenty nine point comeback, the chase down block on the Aaron Fox and the chef's kiss of him with the tip in maybe the most important shot in New York Knicks history. But let's get to this footage yesterday of Og after a long night of partying. Yesterday, him and a few other Knicks making appearance on Good Morning America, and my guy Og is on another planet, completely spaces out. He's being asked a question about Mike Brown, and listen to this radio silence that you're gonna get right here ONKNBR, the sports Leader talk.
