WEBVTT
00:00:23.630 -->
00:00:28.211Welcome to the Mondays with Maria podcast. Today, we are talking about progress
00:00:28.211 -->
00:00:34.422reports. I can't believe we're already halfway through the first nine weeks.
00:00:34.700 -->
00:00:40.051And with me today, I have two very special guests, Jose Martinez,
00:00:40.051 -->
00:00:44.283who is our Deputy Superintendent, and Dr. Tashonda Brown Cannon,
00:00:44.596 -->
00:00:47.539our Chief Academic Officer.
00:00:47.998 -->
00:00:54.501So, Jose, we're going to start with you. Share with families why it is so important
00:00:54.501 -->
00:00:57.599to stay on top of the progress reports?
00:00:58.220 -->
00:01:02.001Well, Dr. Varsas, I could tell you as a parent, I check my son and daughter's
00:01:02.001 -->
00:01:03.421progress reports regularly.
00:01:03.421 -->
00:01:09.591I rather know if there's a concern early on so that obviously I could address that concern.
00:01:09.591 -->
00:01:13.041You know, staying informed also is helpful as well because you also have an
00:01:13.041 -->
00:01:17.041opportunity to celebrate those successes with your kids and really identify
00:01:17.041 -->
00:01:20.193any potential challenges with your school and your teachers.
00:01:20.883 -->
00:01:25.033So Tashonda, if we catch these concerns early...
00:01:25.761 -->
00:01:33.294It could make life a lot stressful for both student and parents, correct? Absolutely.
00:01:33.714 -->
00:01:36.334We catch concerns early. It
00:01:36.334 -->
00:01:41.739really helps us to close gaps versus having to really climb over barriers.
00:01:42.064 -->
00:01:45.554When we're thinking about literacy, it's very important for us to be able to
00:01:45.554 -->
00:01:50.264identify those reading deficiencies so that we can work with our parents and
00:01:50.264 -->
00:01:54.046the teachers can work with the students to provide those targeted interventions
00:01:54.267 -->
00:01:56.455that are needed to help them. be successful.
00:01:56.751 -->
00:02:01.274As we know, reading is foundational. And so throughout all of the core subject
00:02:01.274 -->
00:02:04.327areas, students need to have that strong foundation of reading.
00:02:04.583 -->
00:02:08.269And so in order for our students to be successful, it is imperative that we
00:02:08.536 -->
00:02:11.015close those reading gaps as soon as possible.
00:02:11.386 -->
00:02:15.784While it's important to be on top of all of our subjects, mathematics is another
00:02:15.784 -->
00:02:19.384one because, you know, math builds on those topics.
00:02:19.384 -->
00:02:23.444So if you are, let's say, struggling with your multiplication facts,
00:02:23.444 -->
00:02:27.794you're going to struggle with fractions, decimals, any part of geometry.
00:02:27.794 -->
00:02:37.350So the key is to catch those areas where the child is struggling so that we can support them.
00:02:38.296 -->
00:02:45.302Let's say if a parent does notice some concerns on the progress report, what should they do?
00:02:45.879 -->
00:02:49.164Well, you know, the first thing a parent should do if they notice a concern
00:02:49.164 -->
00:02:50.738would be just to reach out to their teacher.
00:02:51.065 -->
00:02:55.474So teachers can provide, you know, incredible insight into what's contributing
00:02:55.474 -->
00:02:57.414to those challenges and, you
00:02:57.414 -->
00:03:00.475know, obviously work with our families to develop a plan for improvement.
00:03:01.094 -->
00:03:08.756Now, when my children were in school many moons ago, we did not have the tools
00:03:08.756 -->
00:03:14.491that we have now where parents can access information, you know, electronically.
00:03:14.961 -->
00:03:19.336I remember with one of my children, you know, when it was progress report time
00:03:19.336 -->
00:03:24.066or report card time, I could tell where the conversation was going to go.
00:03:25.206 -->
00:03:29.156Whether it was already there waiting for me or if I had to dig.
00:03:29.156 -->
00:03:35.596And a common response was, don't worry about it, Mom. I got it. I got it.
00:03:35.707 -->
00:03:40.846So there was really less of an opportunity to monitor. So let's start there.
00:03:40.846 -->
00:03:46.028How does a parent access their child's progress report?
00:03:46.597 -->
00:03:50.776And so we know that they are able to access the progress reports using Skyward.
00:03:50.776 -->
00:03:54.506But what I love about Skyward is that, as Mr. Martinez said,
00:03:54.506 -->
00:03:58.426you can check it every day, two, three times a day, if you would like to,
00:03:58.618 -->
00:04:01.335so that you're not hearing, oh, the teacher's going to upload that grade.
00:04:01.665 -->
00:04:06.966But really looking at that progress report in Skyward, but I also advise parents
00:04:06.966 -->
00:04:10.886to pay attention to the comments that are in Skyward because it will say your
00:04:10.886 -->
00:04:14.703child is on grade level or your child is below grade level.
00:04:14.935 -->
00:04:18.785And if parents ever have any questions, as we have previously mentioned,
00:04:19.058 -->
00:04:23.216having a conversation with that teacher so that the teacher can identify those
00:04:23.216 -->
00:04:26.898specific skills that are needing to be refined is very helpful.
00:04:27.322 -->
00:04:32.556It is. And our teachers want parents to be partners in this process.
00:04:32.556 -->
00:04:35.240And so sometimes I'll hear, well, I don't want to bother the teacher.
00:04:35.698 -->
00:04:41.236No, no. The teacher wants you to be engaged because they know that if you're
00:04:41.236 -->
00:04:46.188aware, chances are assignments are going to be turned in on time.
00:04:46.322 -->
00:04:50.456And that if the child is struggling, the teacher is going to be made aware so
00:04:50.456 -->
00:04:52.911they can intervene as soon as possible.
00:04:53.421 -->
00:04:57.973So as with technology, sometimes we have a hard time.
00:04:58.591 -->
00:05:04.977Accessing it. So if a parent is having difficulties accessing their child's
00:05:05.128 -->
00:05:08.713progress report, there's some things that they can do.
00:05:08.713 -->
00:05:13.473So first, they can always ask their child to show them the progress report because
00:05:13.473 -->
00:05:19.883students can see them as well, depending on how good or not so good they may
00:05:19.883 -->
00:05:21.562have trouble accessing it.
00:05:22.038 -->
00:05:27.653Or a parent can contact the school. There may be an issue where we need to verify
00:05:27.653 -->
00:05:31.591contact information to make sure it matches your child's information.
00:05:31.998 -->
00:05:38.523But every one of our schools has a skyward lead who should be able to assist.
00:05:38.523 -->
00:05:44.389And that is all year long, not just now as we are talking about progress reports.
00:05:44.598 -->
00:05:48.335Let's talk a little bit about elementary or elementary families.
00:05:48.596 -->
00:05:55.253There are, you know, progress reports, but they look different than those that
00:05:55.253 -->
00:06:02.632are in middle and high school. Tashonda, can you tell our parents what should they be looking for?
00:06:02.916 -->
00:06:07.363So our students in kindergarten through first grade, they do not have your typical
00:06:07.363 -->
00:06:12.000letter grade. So you would look at your satisfactory, your outstanding or your needs improvement.
00:06:12.401 -->
00:06:15.343In grades two through five, we do have letter grades.
00:06:15.343 -->
00:06:19.613But again, as I previously shared, you really want to focus on those comments,
00:06:19.613 -->
00:06:25.273not just the letter grades that will focus on if the student needs more time on task?
00:06:25.273 -->
00:06:29.463Does the student need more support in reading, math, or the social sciences?
00:06:29.463 -->
00:06:31.486Those comments are very important.
00:06:31.806 -->
00:06:35.433And again, I still encourage parents to follow up with teachers if they have
00:06:35.433 -->
00:06:39.259additional questions about the progress report or the report card.
00:06:39.892 -->
00:06:44.943All right, so we've talked about how important it is for parents to really stay
00:06:44.943 -->
00:06:49.454connected, monitor through Skyward hourly,
00:06:50.145 -->
00:06:56.060or on a regular schedule, but definitely when the progress reports and report cards come out.
00:06:56.896 -->
00:07:04.933And if a child is struggling, we have a lot of resources that are available.
00:07:05.078 -->
00:07:10.878Two that come to mind are Alexia, Core 5, and Reading Plus.
00:07:11.307 -->
00:07:16.025So Tashana, can you talk a little bit about the resources that are available?
00:07:16.669 -->
00:07:20.820We, very important, I'd like to also mention that if a student is performing
00:07:20.820 -->
00:07:27.113below grade level in our elementary schools, we notify the parents through ParentSquare.
00:07:27.520 -->
00:07:31.688And so basically, parents will begin to receive that notification in September,
00:07:31.804 -->
00:07:35.003basically indicating if your child needs some additional support.
00:07:35.450 -->
00:07:40.274That letter will also identify the resources that we are using with your child.
00:07:40.506 -->
00:07:44.960So in addition to Lexia, which is our primary resource, which really focuses
00:07:44.960 -->
00:07:47.507on those foundational skills for K2.
00:07:47.849 -->
00:07:53.985We also screen our students with dibbles to be able to really pinpoint reading deficiencies.
00:07:54.246 -->
00:08:00.320And so the classroom teachers, they not only use software programs such as Lexia
00:08:00.448 -->
00:08:05.660or Reading Plus, but they also utilize being a reader during small group instruction
00:08:05.660 -->
00:08:09.034for students who need support with comprehension skills.
00:08:09.376 -->
00:08:12.920And so those are just some of the resources that we're using this year,
00:08:12.920 -->
00:08:17.972we do have a new textbook adoption in literacy benchmark advance that also provides
00:08:18.192 -->
00:08:21.275some comprehension support for students as well.
00:08:21.594 -->
00:08:27.640And in math, because math is very, very important, we recommend manipulatives
00:08:27.640 -->
00:08:30.560at home as well at school and a small group.
00:08:30.560 -->
00:08:35.140And we have IXL that students are able to work with at home as well to kind
00:08:35.140 -->
00:08:36.926of close or narrow some of those gaps.
00:08:37.367 -->
00:08:44.714In my experience, we have the vast majority of parents that are engaged at the elementary level.
00:08:45.179 -->
00:08:48.770You know, they frequently interact with the teachers.
00:08:49.110 -->
00:08:51.840And I think sometimes it's easier because they have fewer teachers.
00:08:51.840 -->
00:08:54.494So once they get into middle school and high school...
00:08:55.161 -->
00:08:59.122We tend to see some of that, you know, drop off just a bit. And,
00:08:59.122 -->
00:09:01.761you know, the students are more responsible. They're older.
00:09:02.732 -->
00:09:06.071So, Mr. Martinez, you were a high school principal.
00:09:06.495 -->
00:09:15.362So any advice that you would give, you know, either a parent or a student if
00:09:15.362 -->
00:09:20.282they are struggling, how they can access, help.
00:09:20.282 -->
00:09:24.822And for a parent, what does that look like at the high school level?
00:09:24.822 -->
00:09:29.142Because it is a little bit different. And sometimes when you have seven teachers
00:09:29.142 -->
00:09:34.610that you're trying, you know, to keep in touch, it gets overwhelming for the parent.
00:09:35.155 -->
00:09:38.792Now, that's a great question. You know, I think a big part of this is recognizing
00:09:38.792 -->
00:09:44.070the importance of keeping open lines of communication, not only with your student,
00:09:44.500 -->
00:09:46.585but also with the teachers as well.
00:09:46.968 -->
00:09:49.682Because the student voice, you know, asking, you know, your child,
00:09:49.682 -->
00:09:53.572okay, what are you struggling with? What's going on, you know,
00:09:53.572 -->
00:09:57.972with particular classes? And really listening and hearing from them what those
00:09:57.972 -->
00:10:00.648concerns may be and also what those successes are.
00:10:00.991 -->
00:10:05.582You know, ParentSquare is also a great opportunity for our families to interact
00:10:05.582 -->
00:10:06.825with all of our teachers.
00:10:07.191 -->
00:10:12.512And that's a tool that is extremely beneficial to building that partnership.
00:10:12.512 -->
00:10:16.882And again, keeping those open lines of communication present for our families and our teachers.
00:10:17.615 -->
00:10:24.263So one of the things that I sometimes hear, if a parent's first language is
00:10:24.263 -->
00:10:31.029not English, that they feel that they would struggle, right, communicating.
00:10:31.412 -->
00:10:37.743So you mentioned ParentSquare, right? That is another tool that parents can
00:10:37.743 -->
00:10:41.403actually customize that if English is not their first language,
00:10:41.403 -->
00:10:45.290they can receive the information in their home language.
00:10:45.899 -->
00:10:51.253But what about school? Like if they want to have a conference and,
00:10:51.253 -->
00:10:55.893again, they don't feel comfortable manipulating the English language,
00:10:55.893 -->
00:10:59.853what are some things our families need to know so that
00:11:00.173 -->
00:11:04.759they can partner with the school, especially if their child is struggling?
00:11:05.200 -->
00:11:09.413I think they need to know that our multilingual department still supports the
00:11:09.413 -->
00:11:11.659language line. So there's an opportunity for that.
00:11:11.897 -->
00:11:16.063In addition to translation, we have a phenomenal team. They are able to translate
00:11:16.063 -->
00:11:18.972information for parents to make it readily available.
00:11:19.531 -->
00:11:24.543So you mentioned LanguageLine for parents that don't know. That's another tool
00:11:24.543 -->
00:11:27.310that we have available in all of our schools, correct? Yes, ma'am.
00:11:27.751 -->
00:11:32.803And they are able to access it and they have interpreters for,
00:11:32.803 -->
00:11:35.393I mean, hundreds of different languages. Correct.
00:11:35.901 -->
00:11:41.703And that should be posted in the front office. so you can just ask them for
00:11:41.703 -->
00:11:47.167the language line or look for, I think it might even be like a QR code that they can access.
00:11:48.210 -->
00:11:54.730Anything else we want our families to know, again, I am just taken aback that
00:11:54.730 -->
00:12:00.293the first half of the first nine weeks has already flown by.
00:12:00.717 -->
00:12:07.000For me, if I'm a student and a parent, I would want them to know that if your
00:12:07.000 -->
00:12:09.890child is struggling, it's not the end of the world.
00:12:10.210 -->
00:12:18.279We have supports at the school that are going to be able to help your child. Just don't wait. Right.
00:12:18.610 -->
00:12:22.600Any other pieces of advice for our families? You know, I would just reiterate
00:12:22.600 -->
00:12:26.130the importance of, you know, communication is the key to successful relationships.
00:12:26.490 -->
00:12:30.810Really having a strong understanding of what your children are experiencing
00:12:30.810 -->
00:12:35.008in their day to day and also recognizing that we have so many resources available
00:12:35.368 -->
00:12:38.804and opportunities to support not only our families, but our students
00:12:39.165 -->
00:12:42.902to achieve great things within the school and also outside of the school day. Okay.
00:12:43.233 -->
00:12:47.440And I just want to encourage parents. We understand that all students do not
00:12:47.440 -->
00:12:51.740learn in the same manner. We understand that they may take, some students may
00:12:51.740 -->
00:12:56.078take longer to learn content, but we know that all of our students can learn.
00:12:56.397 -->
00:12:59.890And our teachers are equipped to provide the differentiated instruction that
00:12:59.890 -->
00:13:04.310our students need to be successful. And so I just encourage all of our parents
00:13:04.310 -->
00:13:09.262to continue to partner with their child's school for the success of their children.
00:13:09.627 -->
00:13:13.570And what a great note to end on. Tashanda and Jose.
00:13:14.210 -->
00:13:19.490Thanks for joining me today to discuss progress reports and how parents can
00:13:19.490 -->
00:13:25.048stay in touch and ensure that their child doesn't fall behind.
00:13:25.500 -->
00:13:29.170Thank you all for listening. Don't forget to like, follow, and subscribe to

00:13:54.780 -->
00:13:57.073Thanks for listening and have a great week.
