درباره این اپیزود
In this episode of the Future Proof mini-series, Marshal sits down with Shannon Smith and Caleb Smith of Smith Law Firm and Smith Asset Management (https://www.smithamco.com/) for a multi-generational conversation about legacy, leadership, and long-term planning.
Shannon, representing the second generation of the family business, and Caleb, part of the third generation, begin by sharing their personal backgrounds and the roles they currently serve within the firm. Together, they explain how their practice uniquely integrates legal representation, estate planning, financial advising, and asset management to provide families and businesses with comprehensive, coordinated guidance.
Marshal acknowledges the powerful parallel between the Smith family’s multi-generational firm and the agricultural families he works alongside, many of whom are also stewarding land, businesses, and values across generations. The conversation explores both the opportunities and challenges that come with working alongside relatives, managing transitions in leadership, and safeguarding long-term continuity.
Marshal also shares his own family’s experience of being encouraged to meet with the Smith team to discuss estate planning for his young family, offering a relatable entry point into what can often feel like an overwhelming topic.
As the discussion unfolds, Shannon and Caleb speak candidly about what happens, financially and relationally, when families avoid planning ahead. Drawing from years of experience, they unpack why society is often apprehensive to talk about money and succession, and how that silence can create unnecessary strain, confusion, and conflict.
The episode ultimately centers on perspective. The Smiths encourage listeners to view estate and financial planning not as uncomfortable obligations, but as opportunities for intentional stewardship for the next generation.

Why This Episode Matters
Avoidance creates vulnerability. Clarity creates resilience.
For families, farms, and small businesses, the absence of planning can lead to legal complications, financial strain, and fractured relationships. By addressing difficult topics early, and with the right guidance, families can protect both their assets and their relationships.
This episode reinforces a central theme of the Future Proof series: planning is not about fear of the future. It’s about stewardship of what you value most. A shift in mindset can transform estate and financial planning from an uncomfortable obligation into a proactive investment in legacy, stability, and long-term peace of mind.
