00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:10.480
Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of Am I for Change?
00:00:10.800 --> 00:00:11.919
I'm your host, Dr.
00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:21.519
Monica Gilbert, and today we are going to talk about the missing ingredient to your parent training sessions.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:24.879
So let me share a little anecdote with you guys.
00:00:25.199 --> 00:00:27.199
I have been trying to cook.
00:00:27.440 --> 00:00:29.359
I am a terrible cook.
00:00:29.679 --> 00:00:33.520
And um precisely because I don't cook, I'm a terrible cook.
00:00:33.679 --> 00:00:43.600
But, anyways, I started trying to cook and bake things that are that have protein and things that are healthy.
00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:55.600
So I gave it a try and I chat GPT'd a description ingredient to making a healthy protein-based pizza.
00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:08.159
So if you've never made this, it's the base is cottage cheese and just mushroom and some turkey and cheese, and that's basically it.
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:14.719
So, anyways, I was making this pizza and I thought I had all the ingredients.
00:01:15.200 --> 00:01:22.079
To my surprise, one of the hidden ingredients in there was almond flour.
00:01:22.319 --> 00:01:24.640
And I don't have almond flour.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:26.159
I don't have it anywhere.
00:01:26.239 --> 00:01:27.760
I don't even know what it's used for.
00:01:27.920 --> 00:01:29.920
But, anyways, I was already there.
00:01:30.159 --> 00:01:32.079
I was motivated to make this pizza.
00:01:32.159 --> 00:01:33.439
So I said, What the heck?
00:01:33.519 --> 00:01:36.799
It's just one tablespoon of almond flour.
00:01:36.959 --> 00:01:38.959
How important can that really be?
00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:42.719
So I went ahead and I made my pizza.
00:01:42.959 --> 00:01:49.280
And again, to my surprise, when it came out of the oven, more than a pizza, it was a quiche.
00:01:49.680 --> 00:01:56.400
It looked like a quiche, and that's really what I was left with instead of this pizza that I wanted to make.
00:01:56.560 --> 00:01:57.680
So, what did I do?
00:01:57.920 --> 00:02:02.159
I went ahead and I ordered pizza because now I'm in the mood to eat pizza.
00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:08.879
But, anyways, that missing ingredient was crucial to me having this pizza.
00:02:09.120 --> 00:02:15.599
I had everything else, I measured everything else, I thought it was perfect, but guess what?
00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:21.360
Without this ingredient, I couldn't make my pizza.
00:02:22.159 --> 00:02:26.000
Now, I recall this and I am not a quitter.
00:02:26.400 --> 00:02:36.240
So a couple of days after I went ahead, I went to Publix, I bought my almond flour, I made my pizza, and it was delicious.
00:02:36.560 --> 00:02:46.240
So if you have any questions on how to make a protein-based pizza, just send me a message and I'll share the ingredients with you.
00:02:46.479 --> 00:02:53.520
The point of this is that when we go into our pairing training sessions, we may have a fabulous curriculum.
00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:25.199
The reality is that when you're learning about how to communicate effectively, it's not just one thing, it's how everything comes together to make that communication the best communication you've had in the session.
00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:33.199
So just using open-ended questions, just using affirmations, just using reflection is not really going to help you with that.
00:03:33.360 --> 00:03:42.800
You have to know how to use all of these techniques together so that what you are hoping for really comes through.
00:03:43.199 --> 00:03:50.800
This happens a lot of the times, and we as clinicians become very frustrated because we're like, we don't get it.
00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:54.159
We have all these ingredients, we have all the right stuff.
00:03:54.479 --> 00:03:59.199
But again, if one thing is missing, it just throws everything off.
00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:01.840
We can't just start with a client.
00:04:01.919 --> 00:04:06.400
If you're working with a little one and teaching them verbal skills, vocal skills.
00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:12.000
You can't just start off and have the data and have the interventions, but miss the rapport.
00:04:12.159 --> 00:04:20.000
If you're if you don't have the right rapport with that kiddo, if you haven't established yourself as a reinforcer, well, it's just not gonna happen.
00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:22.879
When we work with parents, it's the same thing.
00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:25.759
We have to have a collaboration.
00:04:25.920 --> 00:04:32.399
We have to have a mix of all of these different ingredients together to make it work.
00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:43.360
A lot of the times we think about this missing ingredient as something that is outside of us.
00:04:43.680 --> 00:04:48.160
Well, I'm here to tell you that it is not outside of you, it is in you.
00:04:48.399 --> 00:04:49.279
You have it.
00:04:49.519 --> 00:04:53.199
So think about my anecdote of making the pizza as well.
00:04:53.439 --> 00:05:00.879
I had the almond flour inside of the closet, but I really didn't know how to make it.
00:05:01.040 --> 00:05:03.839
I didn't know if I needed one tablespoon.
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:07.040
I didn't know if I needed one teaspoon.
00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:14.079
And for those of you who are avid cooks and bakers, you know how important that is.
00:05:14.319 --> 00:05:20.879
Getting the right ingredient in the right time, putting it in there the right way makes all the difference.
00:05:21.279 --> 00:05:25.600
So I want you, I want to invite you to think about it that way.
00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:28.319
You do have the ingredients already in you.
00:05:28.560 --> 00:05:31.439
You already know how to communicate effectively.
00:05:31.600 --> 00:05:32.879
You just have to bring it out.
00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:37.600
You have to know how much of what to use in your session.
00:05:37.839 --> 00:05:43.920
If you're in a parent coaching session and you have a bunch of open-ended questions, well, that's great.
00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:48.000
You're probably going to build really good rapport with that parent.
00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:53.920
You are going to get the right baseline information, you're going to get all of that.
00:05:54.240 --> 00:06:00.879
However, if you are not reflecting, then you are not communicating what you're hearing.
00:06:01.040 --> 00:06:05.839
You aren't really moving them or putting them on that scale.
00:06:06.160 --> 00:06:09.759
So you have to also have the right amount of reflection.
00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:17.360
The same way, if you have a bunch of reflections and you're like, I hear this and I see this, and this is what I hear, that's great.
00:06:17.519 --> 00:06:21.279
But are we asking the right amount of open questions?
00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:22.720
Are we engaging?
00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:27.439
Are we partnering up with that parent to understand where they're coming from?
00:06:27.680 --> 00:06:29.680
Understand their challenges.
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:33.199
So it's not just one thing or the other.
00:06:33.439 --> 00:06:44.399
It's not just having a toolbox and choosing to choose one thing from that toolbox, is how do we use all of these techniques together to make it fit?
00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:53.600
How do we use all these techniques and all these interventions together in order to have that effective parent coaching session?
00:06:53.759 --> 00:07:14.959
And when I'm talking about the effective parent coaching session, it's not just a parent coaching session where you have rapport with a parent, but it's a parent coaching session where you see the movement, where you see the parent move towards applying that intervention, where you see them actually agreeing and really using it with their child.
00:07:15.199 --> 00:07:19.680
That is what I see as an effective parent coaching session.
00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:32.560
So the next time that you are working with a parent, think about am I doing parent training to the parent or am I doing parent training with and for the parent?
00:07:32.800 --> 00:07:34.720
Those are very different things.
00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:43.759
One word changes the entire way, and it's a whole reframe on the way that we are conducting our parent coaching sessions.
00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:49.839
So, how do you learn how to use all of these tools together?
00:07:50.079 --> 00:07:53.519
How do we mix them so they are the right ingredients?
00:07:53.600 --> 00:07:59.199
And how do we bake that pizza or that pie so it has that fluff?
00:07:59.360 --> 00:08:02.000
So it is what we intend to do.
00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:04.800
Well, first, experience.
00:08:05.040 --> 00:08:10.560
The more you use the techniques, the more you learn how to use them, but also guidance.
00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:15.759
You have to be guided and mentored into how am I going to use these techniques?
00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:17.439
When am I going to use it?
00:08:17.600 --> 00:08:18.639
When is the right time?
00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:25.920
If we look at the ores in motivational interviewing, those are your tools, but it doesn't tell you when or how to use them.
00:08:26.160 --> 00:08:37.519
When we combine the ores with the four processes of motivational interviewing, that is how we precisely know first where that client or where that parent is.
00:08:37.759 --> 00:08:40.000
Do we need to start from the engagement?
00:08:40.240 --> 00:08:43.759
Are we already at the point where we are planning?
00:08:44.080 --> 00:08:52.399
So we're going to look at that and in a staircase manner, we are going to also apply the ores.
00:08:52.799 --> 00:08:56.879
And the ores will be applied differently into these techniques.
00:08:57.279 --> 00:09:03.360
During our next episode of MI for Change, I'll speak a little bit about the how.
00:09:03.759 --> 00:09:08.480
How do we look at the four processes of motivational interviewing?
00:09:08.799 --> 00:09:13.600
And how do we precisely apply the ores so that it makes sense?
00:09:13.759 --> 00:09:16.960
This is how we are tablespooning our ores.
00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:22.799
This is how we know if just to put a little pinch, a teaspoon, a tablespoon, a cup.
00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:28.320
This is how we know how much of it to use and how to use it in each of these processes.
00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:33.200
So you can really have that effective pairing coaching session that you want to have.
00:09:33.440 --> 00:09:38.879
